After some time it the battery sign kept flashing on the screen and the camera would shut down. I tried changing the battery a million times and using different brands, but that didn't help. The quality of the photos were excellent though!!!

I read the reviews before buying, and even though a lot of people complained about battery life, I thought I'd give it a try (found a great deal for $69.) I got the camera, and about 15 minutes into my photos had to put in new batteries. Not even 40 minutes later, those were dead and I had to put in new batteries AGAIN. The quality was similar to my point-and-shoot canon powershot with no noticeable advantages. Despite the good deal (and the fact that all our batteries are free from couponing,) we STILL returned this camera because the battery life is so inconvenient.

Adapter is a bit hefty which is a good sign the way I see it. Fits well on the camera and isn't loose, just a tad tighter then the kit lens which I actually prefer. Mounting a lens on it doesn't give you that satisfying click like it does on the camera mount but it feels secure nonetheless and the fit is just right.
The lens release pin could be a bit easier to press but otherwise I have no complains and for the price that's a minor thing I can easily overlook.

We absolutely loved the 2009 model of this camera the SX120. When we saw this one came out, we thought we were ready for an upgrade, not because we needed it, but because the new upgrades seemed nice. I'm glad we upgraded. The 16x zoom is great (we had 10x before) and the 16 MP make a great difference. The auto-focus also seems to be faster, and battery life seems a bit improved.Pros:More zoom: 16xOutstanding priceUses 2aa batteries (we have ran out of batteries in foreign countries, and it was very easy to find replacements to continue taking pictures)Awesome picture qualityEasy to useCons:Cover not included (they use to in previous models)No GPS or wi-fi (most other alternatives don't include this either, but it 2012. I was all excited about getting the new Cannon SX160-IS during Black Friday. I was finally able to put the camera through its paces during CES to discover some issues:-Camera shutter button is too sensitive, looks like a general issue, not just mine. Lots of accidental shots.-Video capture will show flicker when near CFL lights. My other Cannon does not do this.-Start-up and usage speeds are about the same as the SX130-IS.-Images/Video shows more grain than SX130-IS at same ISO/Resolution.The only real improvement is the additional zoom and the slight increase in zoom speed/reaction. The guy at staples let me return the camera, even after two months. I was very thankful.

This camera has the features of a larger digital SLR style camera in a smaller form factor. The zoom range is limited by not having interchangeable lenses, but that capability adds weight, size and, extra stuff to carry. This camera meets my need to have good quality images. The video capture is good also. If you have previously used a Canon camera the features buttons are the same as all the Canon line.

This was a birthday present for my wife. It takes good pictures and is easy to use. It has some interesting features like smile recognition. The G series definitely fills the hole between my big SLR and the crappy camera in our phones.

This was the third camera that I bought in my search for a camera that was not too bulky, had a decent zoom, and could take monochrome pictures (I love having the option of taking sepia and black and white pics!) I bought a Samsung, an Olympus, and this Cannon. They were all good cameras for the price, especially since I got the Olympus on a REALLY good sale) but this was the only one of the three that could do the monochrome easily. So far I absolutely love it. The only down side is that it does not take spectacular action shots.

The SX1IS is an awesome camera as long as it continues working. You can not ask for a better non-SLR camera, as long as it works, the reliability is terrible. Had for only 13 months and the ability to auto focus went away,,,,(Dirt in the lens works), repaired, worked great......for three months, a person must be super careful here to not get dirt and grit into the lens works,,,a better Camera for the same price, is the Nikon DSLR D3200 with 24.2 megapixels. A much superior camera and its an SLR....very easy and reliable to use.

I purchased this camera to use on a Panama Canal cruise we are taking in April. I have a Sony Nex 5N with telephoto lens but I wanted something more compact for this trip. I received the camera yesterday and went out to test it today against the Sony. I was pleasantly surprised. It comes very close to replacing the Sony. It is easy to handle, feels extremely comfortable in your hand, focuses relatively fast, built like a brick, has all the manual features that anyone needs and feels like a professional compact cmera should. All I need is a polarizing filter and I'll be all set for the trip. A great camera and very pleased again with Amazon's fulfillment department!!!!!!!

This is one very versatile camera. For the price you pay, you will find A camera that is the Best I have ever used. I could not find a better camera for the price. This along with a $50 dollar photo and you will be putting out pictures like a pro. Easily the best photo I've own and with 7 grandchildren, I will be quite busy for a while. I liked my purchase. The pics are bright and clear. I am happy with all the functions of the camera, but the main problem for me is its batteries. The original ones lasted only a day, so now I need to by rechargeable batteries. And I don't know how long they will last. That's all. Hope this will be helpful :)

Originally purchased this camera when new and always enjoyed using it and the great pictures it took. Fast-forward several years later and I "lost" it on a cross country trip with a soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend (can't tell you how much I would have preferred to lose the girlfriend instead, but that's another review). Anyway, while searching for a replacement (and there are many to chose from these days) I stumbled upon Ocean Reef Electronics here on Amazon who was offering the same camera for...wait for it...$25! It was a refurb (their specialty I assume) so with some hesitation I took a chance and pushed the button. Only two days later the camera arrived and holly-cow, it's the spit'n image of the one I lost (did I mention I wished it was my ex-gf that would have fallen out of my truck instead? Ok, I digress..). This one looks 99.99% brand new--you'd never guess it was a refurb--what a deal! I paid a little over $120 for this camera way back when and now I have it back from the abyss (where lost cameras go I assume) for only $25! I tell ya it was like having an undo button for my life!! I love this camera and I'm ever so thankful to Ocean Reef Electronics for making this reunion possible--not to mention their crazy-quick service (TWO DAYS !!!).

Now, if I could only click "undo" on this girlfriend problem....say, I wonder if Ocean Reef could refurb my....nah, probably not.

Kind of rubbish quality. On first use, one of the little taps on the zipper popped off. It's still useable, but it's indicative of the quality of this item.

It's probably intended for a car satnav, but my Sony RX100 camera fits in it okay (altho it's a bit on the thin side for my RX100).

Save up and buy something decent.

Gave this only 4 stars - ONLY because of the shipping. Could have been bubble wrapped better....wrapped on the top and sides..but completely exposed to the bottom of the box - guess they didn't think the bottom of the box would be affected.

BUT, received the camera in great condition...works beautifully. Took it out right away, added batteries and a memory card and within minutes was testing the camera. Took some amazing shots right out of the box. Would certainly not hesitate to order from the supplier again.

I've liked Canon cameras for a long time. I went from an SD40 to an SX3IS and then to this SX1IS. I'm not at all disappointed. I think you can and should find more complete reviews on dpreview and cameralabs, which has a good HD video sample. That said, I'm not going to try to post a complete technical review, just my likes/dislikes, pros/cons, and helpful info. If you get nothing else from my whole review, at least try this tip: Stop shooting with your camera set to Auto. You're missing out on features!

Where to start? This camera uses 4 AA batteries. I really, really, really like using rechargable AA batteries instead of proprietary LION packs. I have used 2500 mAh Energizers with no problems, but recently switched to Eneloops over worries about self-discharge between charges. Yes, my flash can take longer to recycle as the batteries reach half-way, but it sure beats spending $100 on a couple new LION packs in a couple years. I'd rather carry 4 extra AA's to switch to AND have the ability to use any available AA's (100 shots on alkalines vs over 400 on 2500mAh rechargables) in a pinch. At worst, buying batteries at retail or vacation-spot prices would be upsetting, but a dead LION pack means no pictures period. After using someone's camera that tries to work on 2 AA batteries, ugh, I'd never buy one of those and for small cameras you can't beat quick flash recycle times from LION packs. But with 4 AA's you have all the power you need to shoot just as well as LION packs, at least for the first half of the batteries. If I notice my flash starting to take too long to show ready, and I need to maintain quicker flash shots, I just swap to my spare set and know it's time to recharge the other ones.

With my other cameras, I always kept them on P (Program) mode on the dial, but starting with this one I now keep it on C (Custom) because I can store all my favorite settings, including "continuous shutter without focus" for very very fast shooting, and have it always come on that way at power-on, ready to hold down the button and bloat my memory card with 8 shots of the same thing for my wife to later complain about as she goes through the pictures :-) The few settings I might mess with frequently like servo focus, I put in the favorites menu, and then have that menu come up first when pushing Menu. Very helpful. I do still twirl the dial around for specific things like Night shot, and if you like the results of Portrait (tries to use aperture to blur the background, keeping the face in focus) by all means use that as needed.

After several months now, the only annoyance for me is having to switch between Wide and 4:3 to shoot Video and Pictures. I wish Canon would add an option to "Always Record Video in HD/Wide", so when you push the dedicated Record button it always switches to wide, and then back to 4:3 (if that's what it was before) when you stop recording. I bought an SX1 because I wanted to record HD video, right? Otherwise I would have bought an SX10! The best Picture resolution is in 4:3, otherwise you're shooting wide pictures that are "Cropped" in pixels compared to full 4:3. I suppose someday all the film places might switch to wide but for now 4x6 is the default picture standard. The 4:3 shots out of the camera are actually 4.5x6 so Costco will happily auto-crop people's heads off for you if you don't process your pictures ahead of time, but my wife is good at that now. Ok, sorry, I'll try to stop reviewing my wife and focus on the camera. I don't use the camera's built in red-eye or other processing it can do, so I can't comment on that.

I'm not really unhappy with the noise or ISO. It's certainly no worse than my other Canon's and it is unfair to compare the SX1 with an SLR. Of course you get less noise and higher ISO with an SLR! This is a superzoom, not an SLR. I don't have to carry a huge telephoto lens around with me or switch back and forth to wide angle. As it is, this camera is really pushing the limit on a belt-carry camera. I've never even tried, although I found a case at Walmart that does have a belt clip I still just use the shoulder strap. I could wear my SX3 but just barely... Anyway, if you need to get noise out of a picture, I can't recommend enough that you invest in Neat Image. I notice noise more in desktop backgrounds than prints, but by the same logic I also see the noise more when processing/cropping pictures in preparation for making prints.. Neat Image is very flexible and also has some presets like "sharpen a strongly out of focus picture" that can turn a mis-focused "just throw it away" shot into a "well at least you can see something" print. There is a free version but I use the 32 and 64-bit Photoshop plug-ins so I've paid for those. While that's outside the scope of the camera review, I think the information is helpful to others and so I've mentioned Neat Image.

I've had a powershot SX140 for a while, so I was happy to see the SX160 with 16 megapixels and a 16X Zoom. Felt enough had changed between the 140 and the 160 to warrent upgrading. I recently took my new SX160 on a trip and was very pleased with the pictures I got with it. Even pictures taken from a seaplane through the window came out great. Even with a lot of zoom there was only a couple of pictures with some blur. I've been buying Canon cameras for quite a while and have always been very pleased with them. One thing I like about the SX models is that they use AA batteries, 'cause no matter where I am I can always find those if I need them. Generally I buy the lithium AA's and don't have any problem with one set lasting more than 400 pictures. This camera also fits into my purse which is great for a camera with so much zoom. I take a lot of landscape pictures, so I definitely use the zoom a lot.

The lens cap that came with the camera never worked properly and did not have a strap that attached it to the camera. Of course I lost it. The quality on this cap is good. It has a strap so it stays with the camera and fits perfectly.

This little camera produces high quality, sharp, color balanced photos. It can be run either manually or automatically depending on the wishes of the photographer. It's quality is well beyond the cheaper point-and-shoot cameras, but it is still light enough to carry easily.

The product was advertized as new, out of the box. Upon inspection, the top near the zoom and print button was highly scratched. The zoom didn't work at first but I eventually got it to work. I would have returned it but didn't want the hassle and extra mailing.
