extremely disappointed (june 25, 2008)
Then, after about 3 weeks of use, the batteries included with the camera caused the case to burn, damaging the lid. Naturally, we were really concerned about this and called Canon. Even though the batteries were not made by Canon, they were extremely responsive and within a week they had another camera on the way.
All we can say is not only is the camera an EXCELLENT buy, so too is the quality of service. The followups. The interaction. And the deep committment to our satisfaction is testiment to the way Canon does business.
We're a customer for life. And the camera gives us all the features we need to produce great quality photos for the casual outings we do.
If you're looking for a high-speed, high-response camera a Canon Rebel or other SLR camera provides, this one is not for you. BUT, if you are looking for similar image quality at a rock-bottom price, this one is a GO!
Cons: you need to wait for longer time than you expect between two shots for a canon product. However, you can choose the triple shots in one time.
I bought this camera to use in graduate school (industrial design). I needed it to do research for my thesis. I figured between that, all the product photographs, and the need good portfolio pieces, spending the 500.00 on an 8mp camera would be well worth the investment. I was wrong.
About a month after I bought the camera, it started to malfunction. The lens got stuck and would not come out. Neither would it go all the way back in, so the lens cover would not close (not only putting the lens in danger, but draining the battery as well.) It was still under warranty, so I sent it to the Canon Service Center in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. It was received, and I was informed that my camera would be returned in 7-10 business days. That was almost a month and a half ago.
I have put my thesis research on hold because I do not have the proper camera for it. Every time I call the service center, I am told that the "parts are on back order". Evidently they don't know when these shipments are due in their center, so they don't know when I will have my camera back. The best part is, when I called two weeks ago, they offered me a "brand new" S215. The told me it was a great deal and that I should accept the offer because "they NEVER do THAT" (meaning they never offer a new camera for one in repair.) I pointed out that the S215 was only 5mp, had a smaller screen, and cost nearly 300.00 less than MY camera. I also reminded her that MY camera was brand new when it broke and I had to send it in.
Today I was told that there was no information on my camera, the backordered parts, or when they could send my camera back. The woman on the phone asked me why I didn't accept the S215 that was offered, and when I explained and asked for a camera the same model as mine, she said they were not authorized to do that. I told her that I was going to spend the time originally set aside for my thesis research to write letters to both the service center and Canon Corporate Headquarters, and she suddenly had a technician she could consult, and my camera would be back to me by the end of the week. I won't hold my breath, but a copy of this review will be sent to Canon.
I've taken tons of pictures already. The zoom is wonderful, as is the picture quality at lower ISOs. I love being able to adjust the aperature, shutter speed, white balance, and colors. It really allows for some creative photos.
It does, however, take me a while to find the best settings manually, and so I und up missing spur of the moment shots. I wish it had a "high sensitivity" setting for quick pictures.
The picture quality at higher ISOs is quite dissapointing, too. But thats standard with non-SLR cameras in this price range. Its probably actually one of the better ones, its just that 'better' still isn't very good.
The ISO button is definately a plus, as is the scrolling wheel. I didn't think that would matter much, but i really like it.
I've heard that the movie quality is dissapointing, but I haven't tried it out yet.
All in all, I really do like the camera. the pictures are amazing. they look very artistic and clean.
Everything worked perfectly. No strange issues. This camera is excellent for people who wants to get near to professional shots without complications but remember: Practice makes one a master.
I bought this camera for my Alaskan Cruise.
I had no trouble with it and it took clear pictures
including close ups. I would buy it again.
First off, the tiny, brightness-UNadjustable tiny LCD mkes framing in daylight impossible unless you're staring at it dead-on.
Then, I dropped it, from my coffee table onto a carpeted floor, and somehow the crappy plastic door over the batteries broke. I tried to return it for exchange, but no dice. So I wrapped rubberbands around it to get it to function. As long as I squeezed it while shooting, it kind of worked.
Then, inexplicably, about 6 months into it's use, the pictures started being very blurry, no matter what I did. I took less than 1000 shots with this camera, and am now the happy owner of a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ8.
When I bought my 530, a friend bought a similarly sized-and-priced Sony. It has a 2.5"LCD and is very bright. Takes great pictures, and when a pixel died, Sony replaced the camera with a better one within a week.
Canon is pretty good on the SLRs, and OK on the high-end point & shoots, but Panasonic, Olympus, Fuji and Sony are kicking their butts on the low-end stuff.
- The flash doesn't deploy automatically! if you don't pop it up manually then flash will never flash.
- Date/time stamps are only available in a low resolution mode. I found the date/time stamp important for memories and so far I had to add it manually using a computer program which is a real hassle.
This camera is going back; I'll see what other one I can buy.
I did notice a slight shadow as others have mentioned, but compared to disposable cameras I've used in the past - there is no comparison.
From what I've seen, I highly recommend it.
The zoom is excellent 4x it's a bit poor on memory but you can buy more quite cheep. It runs on butteries which help when you are up and about with the camera. A must have for the out door mobile enthusiasts.
