I've had this camera for years, using it mostly to photo-document my motorcycle trips. It's seen hard service. Not as hard as the Elph it replaced, which died an untimely death from a 70 mph pavement impact. But I digress.

So, as I was saying, I've dragged this camera to heck (Missouri, specifically) and back. Well, beyond back; it's been as far west as the Oregon Pacific coast. I usually keep it in the pocket of my motorcycle jacket, where it enjoys whatever weather protection the textile jacket affords. It worked perfectly for years, and then (probably because of bugs and road grime stuck in the lens cover) the lens stopped opening or closing completely. I'd turn it on, take a shot, and then discover that the lens cover hadn't completely opened, leaving black triangles on the upper right and lower left corners of the shot. But a bit of cleaninig made the problem go away.

The modes:

I've never understood what the difference is between auto mode and easy mode. Both of them are complete "point: shoot" modes. The night snapshot mode is good for exactly what you'd expect. And the macro mode is very useful. I never did manage to get any decent results from the manual focus mode. I do like that it's easy to turn off the flash (an option that many more point and shoot operators should take advantage of; if your subject is more than a couple of feet away, you're better off without the flash - spectators in stadiums, take note). Something else I like about this camera is that the shutter lag is unusually short; it's not quite DSLR-instantaneous, but it's darn fast. One last point of praise; the inclusion of an optical viewfinder is great. It has real advantages over using the LCD screen to set up the shot, especially in bright sunlight.

Now the "but." This is an older camera. For what this costs, you can set yourself up with a decent used DSLR or a much newer point and shoot, with features like sweep panorama, smile detection (not just face detection), and so on for much less money. Note that I'm not saying you can get cameras with more megapixels. You can, but there are much more important criteria than megapixels. Unless you print bigger than 11x17 on a regular basis, and you need to crop down and then print that big, you don't need tons of megapixels. 8 megapixels is plenty; heck, if you never print bigger than 8x10, 4 megapixels will do just fine.

For the money, this is a lot of camera. Well built with a solid body. Images come out really sharp. In well lit compositions, it is hard for me to tell the difference between photos taken with my DSLR and those taken with the G15. Price fluctuates a lot on amazon. In one week, I have seen it go from $450 to $300 to $400 then back to $350. If you can get it at $300-$350, it is a steal.

I HAVE NEVER OWNED A CANON CAMERA AND NEVER OWNED A COMPACT, BUT THIS LITTLE CAMERA WORKS GREAT.
WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR A SMALLER CAMERA.

The SX160 is a good compromise for a "point and shoot" and an ultra zoom ... it is small and light but takes good pictures and is relatively intuitive to operate. on trips the ultra zoom gets pretty heavy around your neck and is always bouncing on your chest as you walk... hopefully this camera will take good pictures while being easy to carry

On auto and every shot is blurry and the color and quality is terrible. The autofocus is not working properly nor is face detection. I did my homework, all the other reviews are great, just got a dud. No longer a Canon customer.

My travel camera.Overall great performance but very disappointed in its overexposure problems. Expected proper exposure under Auto mode for family photos, unfortunately over exposed photos are plenty for me. It got so bad that I am afraid of using the auto mode. One reason I carry it over my DSLR is its P&S capability!Focusing takes time. It is understandable but annoying given the $450 price tag.

Bought this as a gift for my daughter who used our G15 on her trip to Europe and loved the camera. She was very pleased to get one of her own. The G15 takes very nice pictures with a smaller footprint than the larger DSLR cameras, making it perfect for capturing pictures on the go.

I used a regular point and shoot in the past only because they were petite and I needed to be able to hold a camera in one hand while doing dog photography for petfinder. The other hand needed to be free to hold treats, toys, etc. I was never satisfied with the point and shoot quality.This camera, with such a fabulous lens and so much lighter in 2013 with the G15 model, gives me crisp pictures and I love being able to change the settings/speed to capture lovely images of wiggly dogs. In bright sunlight, I have been able to take amazing action pictures.This camera is an absolute must if you are looking for very satisfying pro quality pictures, very close or equal to SLR quality, in a camera that is very easy to carry, hold, and adjust. No, it won't fit in a pocket but the photography results are so much better, it's worth hanging it around your neck.

Camera worked for 3 months before no longer powering on. Called Canon and received a replacement 3 weeks later. The replacement lasted 2 days before the shutter stopped working. Going to try and get my money back.

There's nothing to dislike about this model. This is my third and the price has dropped every time. The first one was great but I dropped it and the lens bent. I got the third because I wanted more pixels than the second one had. I've got two now, one of which is a spare just in case.
After all, this is a Canon, and has one of the best camera lenses in the world. A decent lens has to be the main critera for buying a quality camera, and this is a quality camera with a top class lens. Simple to use with plenty of features, it can't be bettered in it's range. Mine goes everywhere with me because it can go in a small pocket. Doesn't wiegh much and is very unobtrusive. Cracking piece of kit.

Can't believe I wasted my money on this camera. Should have sent it back, when it came. The manual it came with was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! It gives you no real direction on how to work the camera. The only thing it really describes are the buttons, etc. The flash doesn't even automatically go up. Its size is bulky and for the first time I used it, all the photos came out fuzzy. I would not recommend ever.

I purchased this camera to use on vacation this past Nov 2013. After second use lens would not retract and closed. Broken lens motorafter 2 uses. For me this camera wasn't cheap in price but in it's self the camera was bad to only work 2 times.

I have a dslr camera and wanted something small for a trip. The pictures were of poor quality, especially compared to my cousin's pictures that she took with a point and shoot camera of a different brand. The only time it took clear pictures was in daylight. It took awhile for pictures to snap as well and I missed shots. Very, very disappointed.

I would recommend this product for those who are experimenting with lenses on their cameras and are cautious about spending on mounts, because there is no functional advantage of buying the expensive ones. This is a very well built mount but not very stylish on a stylish camera :)

I find the Canon G series to be the best of both worlds. Since the iPhone 4 came along, I have had no reason to carry a consumer grade point and shoot. However, when I need more features than the iPhone can provide, and don't want to carry the bulk of my EOS DSLR, the G15 bridges the gap between portability and performance.My G15 travels with me everywhere. The 5x optical zoom coupled with the ability to tweak most settings that you don't find on consumer grade cameras allow me to shoot nearly DSLR quality at a fraction of the price and size. The camera has traveled with me to Niagara Falls, several trips to Toronto, and St. Louis in the past two months and has yet to fail to impress.The autofocus is quick to focus on the subject and the camera can snap off several shots to ensure that I don't miss any action. I can pop the camera into auto mode to have a stranger take a portrait of myself in front of the falls, or I can shoot in my preferred aperture priority mode to have more control over the composition.Just like it's big brother DSLR, I find the pop-up flash to be equally worthless.I bought the camera primarily for underwater photography and it doesn't disappoint. With the WP-DC48 OEM housing, the camera can shoot underwater photos up to 40m depth with great clarity. I find the macro capabilities to be as impressive underwater, if not more so.Long story short, if you want most of the features of an SLR without the bulk, the G15 is the right camera for you.

Not as small as I thought it would be. The screen would be more useful if it could flip up so you can view the picture for timer self portraits or group shots on a tripod. The single shot capture is strange to press the entire ring as the photo button. Also, hard to handle without inadvertently pressing a function on the touch screen. Once you get past all that though it's a decent camera.

This camera eats AA batteries like they were M&Ms. My buddy has one that doesn't do this, but I googled the problem and there are lots of others that display this behavior as well, so it's a design flaw. You will not get one day out of a set of batteries with this cam, and that's a shame because the optical quality of the few shots you do get is excellent.

I must say I had high hopes for this camera to use at many upcoming events, however it sadly is a big disappointment. I am a loyal customer of Canon so I figured I'm going to give this P&S a shot since it had some decent reviews and looked pretty good (16mp and all and iso control - epic fail). I currently use the Canon XSI for major events such as weddings but sometimes it's hard carrying a large camera around especially when you want to dance and do other things. I was looking for a nice point and shoot camera that would take high quality photos in low light and compact to carry around.This camera is not the way to go, I'm surprised anyone would rate this product higher than 2 stars. I just received this today, took a bunch of photos, tried the video, and the quality is awful. Will be returning this tomorrow. (My 5 year old Panasonic DMC-TZ4 can beat this hands down)To provide more specific reviews:Pros:Large display screenStrong flashOne touch rec buttonZoomCons:Display screen is blurry and grainy16mp quality is awful when viewing on the display and on the computerThe build of the camera is extremely cheap, all plastic, even switching between settings the knob feels like it'll break.Video is pretty bad, you need to move very slow and if there is change in brightness the video will blur, also it's only MOV format. Takes forever to auto-focus.Initially I thought using AA batteries would be beneficial but the camera seems to drain them pretty fast, still better off using a lithium battery.Sorry Canon, you have to do better than this!
