I recommend this model to anybody out there who is making the big upgrade from film to digital. This model is portable and can still be used for more complicated shots, if the photographer desires. It is a well rounded camera that is also affordable and versatile.

I purchased this camera for my 7 year old daughter's birthday and she hasn't stopped taking pictures since we put the batteries in! The controls are so easy that I only looked at the manual after I'd figured everything out. My daughter can also work the camera on her own which was exactly what I was looking for. The other huge plus is that it runs on regualar AA batteries, so replacement is quick and painless. I highly recommend this little beauty to anyone - young, old, or inbetween.

I LOVE my new camera. I am always the person with the camera, so, it is important it be lightweight and idiot proof...this camera is both. ZOOM is great, pics are still clear. The time between shots is more then I wanted, but, I am hoping that is just a setting issue.

this is a great camera! The high point of this camera is how good it is in photographing indoors and in low light, even outside in near darkness. The battery lasts a long time, the handling of it is easy, has a stabilizer and optional flash to use and many multi-functions to choose from. I have not learned all there is about it, but so far, I can say for the money this is a great semi-pro camera! I took a photo of my husband walking on the treadmill in the evening, indoors, low light and it was crystal clear and you could see the sweat on his skin, also the television was captured perfectly. Also, I love the exactness of the color. I have another camera that does not capture the same color, this one is great with capturing the exact color and look. Enjoy! Its painless to operate.

I am still new to photography and digital cameras and I wanted something that would take good pictures but was not too hard to work with and settled on the A590IS,
It is exactly what I wanted, small and light with settings that I can just use without having to worry, plus having more options if I want.
The pictures are clear and look wonderful. It is a tremendous value and easily worth the price. Always make sure to get an extra card and carry some extra batteries just in case you find yourself taking more pictures than you planeed on, which is easy to do because this camera makes it so much fun.
It is exactly what I wanted, small and light with settings that I can just use without having to worry, plus having more options if I want.

This is my first digital camera, Canon was my first choice. I have had my Canon Ae1 for over 25 years and it still works great. This camera takes great picture's and is easy to use. Also the upload to my computer was very fast. I recommend a must buy and it was a great price.

I received this camera in 2006 as a Christmas gift and have been using it ever since. The great results that I get from this camera are comparable to most any other 6 megapixel compact digital camera. I have had a number of prints made, and pictures that were exposed properly (per the command of the photographer) produced an amazing amount of detail.
This camera boasts something that wasn't too common among non-DSLR digital cameras: manual functions. For those who are more hands-on and like to have a little more control over how the camera exposes the picture, this was great. I have been able to use this camera to my advantage to explore the effects of shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, etc. It has led me to seek the expanded capabilities of a digital SLR.
But the advanced user aside, the general person who needs a way to capture great shots in most situations will love the relatively small size and great picture quality of this 6MP camera.
I'll be using this as a companion/backup camera alongside a DSLR because the quality of the images is just too great to pass up right now.
Pros:
* Great image quality
* Good color reproduction
* Basic and advanced controls

I went from a Canon powershot elph, to the sx110IS and I Love it! the zoom on this thing is amazing. the viewing screen is huge! I love everything about this camera. It's not very petite, but I find that the size makes it more comfortable to hold.

This camera is a big improvement on our Kodak easy-share, though we still use the kodak and dock for convenience. It's easy to learn how to use, and the large lcd screen is a delight. Also, the price at Adorama was the best we've seen anywhere.

I'll agree with many other reviews here that this is a fantastic little camera. Nice feel, solid construction, takes wonderful pictures. However the time between shots is longer than many other cameras with which I am familiar. The time to cycle between pictures when using the flash is excruciating.
It's also not the smallest camera out there. It fits in a pocket or purse, but just barely.
I recommend this camera and would buy it again as a good value for the price, just don't plan on using it for sports or some other subject where you need to take many shots quickly.

Have used camera once. Amazed at the ease of adjusting and guidance on lense. I am looking forward to cruise and taking lots of pictures. I have had another digital camera (not named). The Canon is by far superior. Love it!

This camera was almost a five star camera. Disabling the RAW capability (that was available in the previous model) and some clunky controls and operation keep it at four stars for me.
For many of you, RAW makes no difference. And that is great. But for those folks who own Digital SLR cameras, and want this camera as a powerful, easy-to-carry utility camera - lack of RAW support cripples this camera.
Next, as other reviewers have noted, the side mounted mode-knob is easily jostled and can result in the camera being in a mode that you did not plan for it to be in when you are shooting. It is EASY to accidentally move this knob.
The lens cover and using it as the power button is a poor design as well.
Finally, since I seem to be listing the problems first, like most point and shoots the noise level at anything over 50 ISO is very high and makes the camera almost unusable in settings where you would like to set the ISO higher. Basically, very low light settings are compromised by this inablity to set the ISO at 400 and be confident that the pictures will have a low enough noise level to be usable.
On to the good. As a point and shoot camera, this offers a huge amount of control over the shot. You can shoot in aperture and shutter priorities and you can - in theory - do almost anything that you could do with a DSLR. Your biggest limitations are the lens (unchangable) and the sensor (small, high-noise at high ISO).
In 90% of the typical point and shoot settings, this camera will outperform your current camera. It takes beautiful pictures.
The wide angle lens gives you the ability to get more in the shot when you need to do so - making it a great "vacation" camera.
The zoom is decent, but not outstanding.
Colors are outstanding, and this is a typical Canon strength.
Reading through other reviews here, I also note that several people have complained that the camera did not fare well after being dropped - with a particular emphasis on the large LCD cracking if you drop it. I'm not sure how to respond to that... I guess that I would just say that I would have expected that to happen. I tend to treat $500 (when I bought it anyway) cameras carefully. I purchased an inexpensive camera case which I use always (and find easy to use, since it attaches to my belt) and I use the camera strap when I use the camera. I haven't dropped the camera yet in the year I have owned it. If I did, I'd be pleasantly surprised if it survived - not upset with Canon if it didn't. There are many different types of people with many different expectations in this world, and product reviews are a great place to see these many different attitudes!
Overall, a very good - almost great - point and shoot camera.

I have owed many digital cameras over the past 8 years (at least 6), plus fancy Nikon SLRs before digital. I concider myself an amateur photographer. My last camera was a Canon SD500 (i carelessly dropped it hard and it died, it took other drops and was fine) I used it very often for about a year. I loved it!!! But it did not have the manual features I really like, but overall it did do most artistic type shots that I wanted. I personnaly prefer a quality small camera over any larger camera. I have also compared other brands use and prints, and nothing beats a Canon, IMHO. Canon's just seem to print out what you original saw on camera without having to make any changes on the computer.
The s80 is amazing! You just can't go wrong! It Canon's latest evolution as of Spring 2006. Its everything the SD500/550 is plus a lot more, although it is a bit heaver and larger, but not too much so. It is so easy to use and has a scroll wheel that is really effective. It has so many features and options, but the s80 still manages to keeps them fairly usable.
Please ignore other reviewers argument over RAW. Snobby purists insist on RAW. RAW takes hours of work for marginal improvements. JPEG is better for almost all applications.
Pros:
- Does everything possible short of being an SLR!
- Nice intuitive controls
- Great picures with superb resolution and lighting
- Really, it has everything!
- Could be used as a web cam (with additional software)
- Does higher res movies with audio (works great)
- Does time lapse; braketing (three shots in one); flash offset
Cons:
- Besides personal opinions of style, comfort, and
minors issues of SD vs. CF cards - NO major Cons. I much
prefer SD cards (smaller, cheaper, more standard)
- It has a slightly noisy zoom (not too bad)
- If you have big fingers, it would be harder to use.
OVERALL, if you really just want point a shot camera, the s80 can do that, but is really more than you need, get the SD550 or A95 instead. Just about any 5-6mp camera will do most family snapshots.
If the 5-6mp camera can print 8x10s, why would anyone need a >6mp camera? A: Cropping, cropping lets a novice take about any picture that has way too much space over people's heads and frame it more professionally (according to books). Cropping can create better eye flow and more detail. Even cropped you can print great pics. Also, if you really want to print good poster size prints then 8mp will do the trick.

And when I need full manual setup with tripod and lighting and remote triggering the s80 is full cabable and its printed photos are as good or better that other SLRs I've used. Plus, it is much easier/cheaper to use underwater with special case (I dive - it works great). Woefully, a compact camera just doesn't look very professional, but that is psychcological.

i've only used my new canon a590 twice so far, but i absolutely love it! it is by far the best deal on a digital camera in the "cheaper' class, & i would recommend it for anyone who is looking to upgrade from their first cheapie to a superior but affordable digital camera.

This is a phenomenal camera! Photos are crisp with excellent clarity. So many features I've had to refer to the manual on many occasions however, being a camera novice it is pretty user friendly. I'm still adjusting to all the capabilities and excited about taking the camera when I deliver our second baby in January!

I have had 2 of the previous iterations of this camera, and bought this only because I had dropped my earlier version and broken the internals of the view finder. I shoot candid shots in group settings and wanted a camera with a viewfinder that responded quickly when the shutter is pushed and used AA batteries. This does far more than I can do and is perfect for what I use it for.

This is a great point and shoot Camera:
Pros:
- Sturdy, literally unbreakable. My kid has thrown this camera around but no damage done.
- Takes sharp pictures for a 6mp Camera. I will upload some of the pictures I have shot with this camera.
- For manual control freaks, this camera has enough manual control to play around with.
- Uses 2 AA rechargeable batteries. Buy a 15 minute charger and you are all set. No need to buy li-ION batteries.
Cons:
- After handling the Elphs, this one looks a little bulky, however I have not complaints with it's size what so ever.
- Is an old camera so is definitely slower between two pictures, again I have had not complaints with that.
All in all, for the price this is a great great camera. I upgraded to an XTi and bought an ELPH, but this camera is staying with me. I also have a previous version of the A540, the A520 extremely happy with that one also.

Just a short note to let you know that I had some reservations about this item because of the claims of short battery life. I looked at a lot of other cameras and was hoping for some great features without having to go to the fancy schmancy cameras. For the price, I think it's a great buy. It is easy to use, it has a lot of great features and you can use manual functions but I haven't needed to yet because of all of the options including "night scene", "kids and pets", "foliage" and so on. The camera came with two basic alkaline batteries and I've literally taken a couple hundred pictures and they're still working. I don't use the flash very often, so this may contribute to the longer battery life, but I generally use rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, so I'm not too worried about the future battery life once these freebies wear out.

Well, if you have big pockets. It's pretty clunky for a point-and-shoot, but the zoom and manual mode make up for it. It's small enough to lug around, yet the grip and features make it feel like a "real" camera. The all-manual exposure mode was my main reason for buying Canon A-series cameras, even though I've ended up using them in Program mode 99% of the time -- it's a very smart P. mode. Neither this one nor the previous A70 have disappointed me in any way (other than the A70's CMOS coming loose, but that's a warranty repair, I just chose to buy a new 8MP instead of getting the old one fixed).
The AiAF seems to alway pick the wrong part of the frame to focus on for me, but I turned it off and just used the center frame and a half-press of the shutter button. No problem with that method, since I grew up on Olympus OM-series SLRs.
The manual focusing leaves something to be desired, since it just gives a magnified center on the LCD, and no cheats -- you have to judge sharpness on the little LCD, by eyeballing it. But you'll never need to use the MF, since the auto works perfectly from one inch to infinity if you set it to only use the center zone, then focus on what you want to be sharp and hold the shutter button halfway down while you compose. The MF does show a distance scale at the top, so you can really fine-tune it if you're willing to break out a ruler.
Overall, I'd say it's as good as you can get without interchangeable lenses. Ease of use and features abound.

I upgraded to this camera from my older Powershot A510 (stolen). It's better in every way. MUCH faster, good battery life, awesome pictures, unbelievable zoom, and image stabilization (I got soooo many fuzzy pictures with the A510 -- not anymore!). It's definitely not compact (fills up my entire jeans pocket), but it takes infinitely better pictures than compact cameras. The software has also gotten much better, and you can finally play videos in ZoomBrowser. It's still not very good at extreme macro shots or low light conditions; but I'm not a pro photographer either, so I rarely mess with the settings. BTW, GREAT bang for the buck.

I have bought one for my grandaughter who is in college. I bought another for our historical society. The value and quality and ease of operation
is very good. The quality of the pictures are excellent. Would recommend.

I wanted a digital camera that was easy to use and did not require a lot of special settings. I found that in this camera plus I can take video's with it. I have not had it long and still learning, but so far very pleased with the product for the price.

I bought this camera for my boyfriend for Christmas. He absolutely loves it. The zoom is great, as well as the display and quality.

I bought this camera for my daughter and when she saw it she was amazed. She recently had a kodak that broke when she dropped it, so she is really excited to have a durable camera that takes great pictures. There are so many different options and buttons, this camera was a great find!

This model (the A530) has been replaced now with the A590 which retails for about $150. I've bought a couple of A 530's over the past couple of years(one for each daughter). The A530 is only 5 megapixtels, but it takes great pictures. It has proven to be very durable.

This product is wonderful! It is easy to use and has lots of different options for such an economical price. The photos come out GREAT and look like a professional took them. If you are not a camera expert this would be a great camera for you and it is a good price too!

I couldn't decide between the canon powershot sx100 or the fuji finepix s700.
The last couple of cameras we had were just basic point and shoot,and I wanted a camera that had more features and optical zoom.
Ended up going with the canon, I've had it for about a month now, and haven't had any problems with it so far.
The batteries that came with it were regular alkaline and didn't last long at all. Rechargeable batteries last longer,and you can use them over and over. I found it's best to take an extra set along if you plan to go anywhere.
The Memory card that comes with it holds anywhere from 3 to 52 pictures depending on the number of recording pixels. Taking video seems to use a lot of space up. So it could use a bigger memory card than the one that it comes with, but I haven't found it necessary.
The zoom seems to be good, but this is my first camera with this much zoom and settings. It does get more grainy/blurry once you get into the digital zoom (past 10x optical.)
Occasionally it hasn't done the best in low light, but is usually fixed by raising the flash or changing the settings. Some of the best photos I've taken are in the manual setting.
I've also used it to get photos of backyard birds and it sure beats the point and shooters I've used even with binoculars hooked to them.
Overall its a great camera.

I have owned 3 digital cameras before buying the Canon PowerShot A590IS. This is hands down the best camera I have ever owned and I have owned 35mm SLR cameras as well. The ease of use, the controls, the features, even the software that came with this camera makes it the best I have ever owned. The picture quality is phenomenal, even when shooting moving people indoors with flash. I take this camera with me everywhere and have taken over 450 pictures within the first 10 days that I have owned it. I am very pleased and would highly recommend this camera.

Consumer reports gave this camera a good review. I Bought it and now I can too. Great battery life, brilliant colors, and no fuzzy images. The image stabalization works well for low light situations where shake would be evident in other cameras. Buy it, You wont be sorry!

A great compliment camera to my Canon SLR.....pictures are wonderful, colors crisp and the zoom is first rate. This camera is intuitive to use, controls are straight forward and yet it has manual controls that make even diehard buffs smile. Kudos to Canon.

I am particularly interested in macros (close-ups), and wanted an easy, tote-along camera for hikes and other nature explorations. Couldn't be happier with the A590, and for the money, it can't be beat. See sample macro image of winterberries that I uploaded. Focuses down to 2".

I am very satisfied with this camera. After using a small kodak camera for a while it was time for a chnage so after much searching and reading reviews i finally decided to buy this camera. no regrets!!! for the orice i paid the camera is really great. it takes great pictures of excellent quality, it is easy to use and works really well.
even if i was worried about the complaints about its draining of batteries i am happy to say that this camera uses batteries just like any other avergae cameras. like i do with my othe cameras after i take a picture i turn it off and put it back on when i want to use it again.
The best that happened to me was that my friend who is a professional photographer gave me a big compliment for my camera and she is calculating her savings to purchase a few for herself. we were on holiday together and she kept using my cameras for pictures and really loved the quality.
i really love this camera. if you want something cool, affordable, works well and takes great photos do not hesitate,,, this is the camera for you. plus the service was great and i received the camera on time and in great conditions.

We have owned this camera for just under two years. It has lots of powerful features that we've enjoyed using, especially things like timed exposures. We have taken a lot of great pictures with it. However, recently the flash has intermittently stopped working. When trying to take a picture, the symbol for the flash would blink on and off on the screen, and it refused to take the picture unless we turned the flash off. The manual says nothing about what the blinking flash symbol means. At present, the flash works sometimes, but it is no longer synchronized with the shutter. Is this an electronic problem rather than a mechanical problem? Anyway, it sets the shutter speed, etc., based on the presence of the flash, but the flash is early - "flash . . click". So no pictures come out right. Time to get another camera.

I bought my A640 for those days when my little Fuji F10 isn't enough (such as when the sun's out!) but when the full Pentax dSLR rig is too much to carry. The A640 satisfied my list of essentials and nice-to-haves:
* Optical viewfinder - essential for outdoor photography and tracking moving subjects, such as children;
* Semi-automatic modes, especially for depth-of-field control;
* SD memory and AA power, both of which already come with me when I travel, so no proprietary batteries and chargers, please;
* Swivelling LCD screen. Combines brilliantly with the lens's close-focus capability. Gets me pictures I wouldn't get any other way.
* 10Mp is probably more than I need, although it gives useful scope for cropping when I can't get close enough. There's a Superfine setting at 6Mp, so I can make my storage go further without compromising quality.
* It's black, so it looks like a proper camera, not a painted silver toy!
There are a few minor gripes. You can switch off the LCD and turn it face in to protect it, but you then lose all exposure information but for the two LEDs beside the viewfinder. There's room on the top plate for a little LCD status panel, which the old swivel-screen G5 and G6 had, but I suspect Canon is already afraid that the A640 will take sales from the G7 and the gap had to be maintained somehow.
I'd have preferred 28-112mm to the actual zoom range of 35-140mm, but I can understand why it's not that way. I can't see myself bothering with the expensive and bulky conversion lenses.
And the A640 has only one strap eyelet, in the top right corner, so there's no option to hang it round your neck. For a camera of this gravitas (in both senses) this is a pity. Nor does the wrist strap have a slider to tighten it around the wrist, so it's not as secure as I'd like.
So I'm well pleased with my A640. Incidentally, the chunky grip makes it an awkward fit in many standard cases - including Canon's own DCC-300 - but I've found mine goes snugly into a Tenba Travelite PS4, which can be picked up very cheaply and is handily compatible with LowePro Sliplok fittings. (Edit Dec 2007: I've since bought a Crumpler Crisp-E 600, which fits the A640 even better and is both better looking and easier to open than the Tenba.)

i would recommend buying it. The price is probably comparable w/my local stores. And you NEED to get the the larger memory card at the same time or it's worthless. I have only taken pic's so far so I can't tell you anymore. All in all it has made me happy,
