This is a brilliant little camera, it combines good looks with great results. We previously had a G9 which was great outdoors but the results indoors with flash were very harsh. This is fantastic, the results are very natural, and the on board software edits out the red eye if required. The manual settings allow a great deal of flexibility, if you believe that you can achieve better results than the auto settings produce! We are extremely pleased.

I bought this camera after researching digital cameras on Consumer Reports and Amazon feedback reviews. It's a great point & shoot camera and the price was great, too. The internal memory could be better but you can easily resolve that problem with a memory card. My brother is completely thrilled with it and hasn't reported any problems yet.

This, my second digital camera,is a great buy. After researching many brands, I went with this Canon for its features, quality, price, and ease of use. Very compact yet all the features I wanted and controls are intuitive to use. Would recommend for a great all around point and shoot camera with advanced features available.

Like that it still has some of the same options that my S2 had, wish that download was the same but it is not that much different. Haven't used it much, but am impressed with it so far. I would recommend it for an advanced amature.

This camera is excellent picture quality seems much sharper than other models, Optical and digital zoom excellent. The camera is a bit on the heavy side and bulky, but a beautiful tradeoff between power/features and weight. Image stabalization is this best, however I had a problem taking multiple photos quickly. I would buy this camera again

Have had this one for a year. It's a little tricky getting used to the function options, but once you set them, it takes great pictures. Not as prone to catching "orbs" or dust as much as my Daughter's Casio. Images are sharp but "red eye" still a problem with some night shoots. (you can correct on your computer before uploading to shutterfly or other photo services). Lag time between shots is quick, a lot better than my old Nikon Coolpix. This one really shines in outdoor lighting coloration and depth. While I prefer a full sized SLR digital, this is the next best thing when you travel light.

I had done pretty good research before buying this product. seemed the best in my price range and configuration. however on using it seems auto mode is not functioning correctly. i don't see flash working, aperture control is not as expected, i find image blurred in case of movements

Buyer beware! The A590IS requires two alkaline batteries; however the batteries last approximately one to two weeks or less than approx. 75 photos. The low battery indicator appears way too often.
The A590IS has 8MP packed into a small sensor chip which causes the photo details/sharpness to be less than say a 5MP on the same size chip (it's called "noise" in a photo). Advice when buying a digital camera; more MP is not necessarily better. Look at the ratio of MP to chip size/capacity. The lower the ratio of MP to chip capacity = more noise, because the MP take too much space on the chip thus blurring the photo with more pixels. If you buy the A590IS, Canon packs 8MP on a small chip thus creating noise. I had a Canon A610 for two years; 5MP on a small chip but alot less noise than the A590. My A610's sensor chip died after two years (black LCD screen). Bottom line, digital camera technology is not reliable; the life expectancy is not long. At least film cameras lasted more than two years . . .

This was my second digital camera. If you want a fancy camera with amazing shots, this isn't for you, but it's a fun, small, (relatively) cheap point-and-shoot camera with some great features. I love taking pictures on it.

If you're thinking about buying it and you just want a nice, easy-to-use camera, this is for you. Thank you, Canon.

I'm a intermediate photographer. I collect all sorts of point and shoot and SLR camera's. This was my first purchase in about 2 years and this is just a well-rounded camera for the photographic enthusiast. For what it can do the price is rock-bottom and I had an Amazon gift certificate so even better! The screen is great, awesome little flash, simple buttons that get you to menu items quickly, really slick LCD screen. I love it.

I've seen better pictures taken with more expensive cameras. But I am very pleased with the product and satified with the purchase.

First impression of the camera was very good (speed, sharpness, color rendition), but after short usage period the battery warning light came on. I started using rechargeable batteries, which I had from my old Cannon 610. This condition persisted, so I thought possibly new rechargeable batteries were in order. I bought the highest rated rechargeable NI-MH batteries available. They are 2700 MAH. But, after taking 15 pictures and downloading to a PC, the battery light came on and shortly thereafter the camera shut down. I considered this to be intolerable and sent the camera back. Did I just get a lemon? In my old Cannon 610, a battery charge lasted forever.

This is another great A camera from Canon and improves on the A620 for image quality and control options. The former is not easy given that the number of Mpixels has gone from 7 to 10 on the same size sensor. There really is a noticeable difference in image detail between them.

Image noise is only an issue above ISO 200. ISO 400 is quite usable with ISO 800 usable at small print sizes and with NR. There are many programs which will reduce image noise and do a very good job too. Low ISOs can be as good as a DSLR with decent exposure.

G7 output is very easy to achieve since it is basically the A640 with enforced noise reduction (NR) applied. In the case of the A640, you have the choice: scarifice some detail to NR or not.

The lcd screen is larger (2.5") which is helpful but has the same number of pixels as the A620 so looks a little coarser. It does not like bright light behind hit. But moving the articulated lcd helps. The larger screen is great for movie mode - movies look very good.

Its overall speed is about the same as the A620 even allowing for the extra Mpixels - see [...] for a detailed timings etc.

It has an optical viewfinder which is okay but it's not too accurate - as is so with all of these digicams. Using the LCD is a must - it offers framing guides, etc. too.

Focus is almost instant in most situations as is shooting. It uses a focus assist light for low light.

Flash is as it was on the A620. With a little know-how good results can be had even in macro mode. It syncs at 1/60 sec.

The lens is the same 35-140 and a good one too with centre and corners very good. Zoom noise is quiet and not an issue.

Macro mode is excellent with a 1cm distance possible. The 10 Mpixels does make a difference here - great detail in close ups - and using a wide aperture f2.8 you can get nicely blurred backgrounds (the bokeh is quite good). I use a Canon 20D DSLR with a Sigma 105 EX f2.8 macro lens and believe me the A640 can in some situations perform as good.

There are many add ons available: lenses, filters, etc - it uses A620 ones.

Another great compact for anyone to have in their pocket. As a first cam to learn photography with since there are basic modes leading to advanced ones or as a backup to a DSLR system when you want something lighter.

I was looking to buy a less expensive, last year's model point and shoot, because our last camera took a beating, was dropped and died. Got more than I expected with this camera. Very nice features, good pictures. One feature that I love - When you turn the camera to get a tall shot, the camera knows and formats and saves the picture as a "portrait" photo as opposed to "landscape". Very cool.

This camera is awsome. Would like a string to hold my lens cover. Minor problem, but may want to see if I can order a few extras for when mine gets lost as I know it will.
Other than that, it is a great camera, with lots of features and no need to change lenses to get up close shots.

This little Canon has IS, 4X telephoto, 8MP, and uses 2 AA batteries. The controls are simple and easy to use. It takes great photos. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is that it is slower between shots than I would like. But for the price I think it cannot be beat.

I bought my granddaughter a digital camera for Christmas but we weren't pleased with the quality of the pictures. I returned it and purchased the Canon PowerShot and she loves it! It'll last her for years. Excellent quality and easy for kids to use.

I purchased 4 of these cameras as a christmas gift for my relatives who didn't have a digital camera and who I knew wanted to break into the digital world. After a lot of research online + with prior excellent experience with Canon cameras and camcorders (have 2 other cannon cameras & 1 cannon camcorder), this was a natural choice for me. Price was another consideration. Its very very affordable, entry level camera that consistently takes excellent pictures and videos and lives up to the Cannon legacy. The modes are very basic as compared to some higher end models and qualify for a basic shoot-and-point camera; but then, what else do the uninitiated, middle aged people want??? Its best feature is its ease of use. Just select, point and shoot! I've seen even people with advanced settings often use the "Auto" mode more often as a rule than an exception. I myself do!!
The only minor fault I noticed was its cheaper-made-in-china look. You expect more from a cannon, and that goes for looks as well. Doesn't look too bad, but closer inspection does reveal a not so smooth finish, and its indeed made in china.
Apart from that, there are no quality or functional issues whatsoever.
Battery life is great, weights very less, easy to carry around, comes with its own handy software (which you don't HAVE TO install) and definitely worth its money.
The best christmas gift I gave ever. And everybody really loved it!

The flip screen is GREAT, you can take a photo & be in it at the same time, all while knowing the pic will be good because you can see it while your taking it. The camera itself is a little heavy, and bulky, but over all a camera you can have fun with!!

I researched for a camera for a while and ended up buying this sx10 is and have no regrets. Takes very good pictures and is fairly easy to use. I took a picture from my couch with the zoom pointing through my front door and storm door at a bird sitting on a tree branch and it looked like I was outside standing next to it. The only down fall is the owners manual, it doesnt explain things very well.

There was a slow response time but after taking the photos but I called canon and this camera operates better after you initialize the memory card. I've never had to do this before on any of my digital cameras (usually Nikon) but it did improve it's function and response time.
Good price for a decent camera

Our county bought a pile of these great cameras along with 1GB memory cards and we've been using them for a year now. This is a tough digital with a bright display that you can pull out and flip around if you want. The high-res video mode is 640x480 and smooth. We bought them for use by law enforcement, fire and ambulance crews because the controls are large and easily manipulated by people under a bit of stress. The USB2 cable connection is fast and the transfer software is acceptable, even if it's not terribly pretty. The software stores your photos in dated folders, so make sure you've set up your camera properly. One of our folks had a bunch of photos end up in a folder dated "1980" which appears to be the blank date setting. I carry mine with an extra four AA batteries (yup, four) because you don't get much warning when they go. But as a general rule, the camera's not a battery hog either. The macro and exposure adjustment setting work pretty darn well.

I've dumped this camera a number of times and keeps on ticking. It's *not* a professional camera for those who are hypercritical, but what it does, it does very well and while I usually use this camera for work, the few private photos I've put up in blogs are of very good quality and usually get comments.

We love this camera - takes excellent shots. Sure, friends with $700 cameras have better shots, but this does an excellent job for casual pix and snapshots. Only gripes are slow time to recharge flash, and it drains rechargable batteries quickly (the flash does this more than the camera itself, I think).

This is one amazing little camera. When I first saw the size and price, I was suspicious. But it certainly exceeded all my expectations. It is better than any video camera that I've previously owned, and at considerably less cost too.

I need both video and still images for work. I suppose there are camcorders and regular cameras that provide higher quality for each its own specialty, but the TX1 provides both with exceptional quality. I can't imagine any ordinary users being dissatisfied with the quality. I end up using the lower resolution and size settings because they give me what I need, using less drive space.

The small size is really an advantage for me in carrying around in the field, when I need to use my hands for other things. Now no need for a clumsy holster or carrying case. I have large hands and I have no problem operating the controls. True, the on-off button was a bit hard for me to depress, but I've learned to use the tip of my finger in a way that works.

My previous camcorder was a Sony with settings operated with by LCD touch control. That was awkward and the displays were confusing. This tiny joystick and the layout of commands is much better.

A bonus was the voice recording function, which I can use for taking notes in the field, either in general or in association with a specific still image.

My first digital camcorder cost nearly $2000 a few years back and it took lousy still images. This cost me less than what analog camcorders were going for then.

What can possibly come next?

I just took my 10,000th image with this camera. I bought it 2 years ago, and it is still working great, even with the beating I have put on it. It has been rock climbing, caving, kayaking, dropped on concrete, etc. It is only now succumbing to cave dust after about 30 different caves [that destroyed my solid state flash after about 10 caves], but it still takes great pictures for now. I love having the manual mode, where I have almost limitless options for the more difficult shots. The noise at high ISO is annoying, but it seems on par for its generation. This is the camera line I buy when I want an DSLR but can only afford a 200-300 dollar camera.

Wow! That was my reaction when I took my first image with the Canon PowerShot A640.

This camera really is worth considering if you want a product that is both reasonably priced and offers you a wide array of features found on comparatively more expensive models, including low-end DSLR cameras. For example the mode dial is packed with various scene selections: even including a full manual mode, together with aperture and shutter priority modes. If you are not one for the complexities of photography then there is, of course, the auto mode, which so far for me has produced excellent results each time, when I have not had time to tweak menus and parameters.

I like the stitch assist feature, which is great if you enjoy shooting wide panoramas; and also the fact that you can overlay a 3 x 3 grid whilst shooting: perfect for those rule-of-thirds compositions and super straight horizons. Also, the 10MP sensor is superb, capturing a huge range of detail when used at low ISO sensitivities. Finally, the flip screen - a modest 2.5", is versatile as it can be rotated all the way around which allows for self-portraits and interesting angles.

There are only two minor drawbacks. The camera takes 4 batteries rather than 2, meaning that if you wish to carry a spare set around with you, as I always do, then you must carry around quite a lot of batteries. Obviously, go with NiMH rechargeables as the supplied batteries will not last you too long. Furthermore, whilst the build of the camera does seem sturdy, it is fairly large for a compact, thanks to the generous battery grip, so it may not work for someone who needs a light and ultra-pocketable camera. It's a pity that it does not include image stabilisation but I guess you can't have everything. Just lean against something or invest in a tripod if you are shooting at night or using slow shutter speeds.

Other than that, it's an excellent camera that offers the resolution, the features and the price. Highly recommended - you surely cannot get better in this price bracket. Don't forget to buy a generously large (2GB?) (preferably hi-speed) SD card for storing all those large images though.

Am I the only one that noticed the picture quality looks overexposed with little detail nor proper color levels. I'd try and find a S5IS which is a superior camera in regards to picture quality. I think the advantages of the "super zoom" are also part of the downfall. Looking through a tunnel, and you'll get pictures that reflect this aspect.

Take your time and look at the picture samples taken from the S5IS versus the XS10IS - base your decision on your taste, not what you read.

Great build quality and feel. cannot wait for some form of TX2 with 1080p and wider angle lens .

I'm partial to Canon products. My camcorder is a GL-1 that I've used for about 8 years and its still making good pictures. Their lenses are excellent. So, a Canon still cam was a natural and the A1000 had the right price. Supplier service was excellent.

THE CAMERA WAS NOT ABLE TO FOCUS ON OBJECTS, SO PICTURES WERE NOT GOOD AT ALL.
I SENT IT TO CANON FOR THE REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY, BUT IT COST ME ABOUT $18.50 FOR UPS OF A BRAND NEW CAMERA.
I THINK THE QUALITY CONTROL OF CANON SHOULD NOT BE THAT GOOD ANY MORE.
