This is my first digital camera. I made the transition from a high quality 35mm slr for the ease of photographing stained glass and jewelry for my web sites. With traditional film it was costing a small fortune for supplies and processing not to mention being disappointed with the results of photographing glass. I had to overshoot with the hope a glass panel would turn out correct. Glass is a very difficult medium to capture accurately. Digital just made sense having instant results. It worked great for the glass panels but I am not pleased with pics of my jewelry. This application requires more close up shots for detail. The auto focus seems unpredictable and I end up with a great many of my pictures being out of focus. I have to shoot quite a few pics to get a couple of keepers. I suspect this is not this cameras' specialty. I use it outside and it takes an excellent photo. Normal indoor photos, like Thanksgiving, with the flash is fine also. So it all depends on what you are going to use it for.

This isn't the slimmest or tiniest compact digital camera, but it's still easily pocketable (jacket, not shirt!) and for the price, produces great pics in a compact form. The screen is a good size and nice and bright and the extra bit on the zoom makes a difference - most of the competition stops at 3x. The colour choice allows a bit of personalisation.

There are an amazing number of presets, but you won't need most of them, and the most important ones are the most accessible. Anyone unused to digital cameras or who is a bit of a technophobe upgrading might find the menus a bit of a fiddle, but for most purposes, they won't be used much.

Pictures are bright and sharp with comparatively little distortion. Colours are bright and zingy - not quite true - but the bit of extra saturation makes them very attractive.

All in all, a bargain little camera.

Still taking some time getting used to this camera, but it is handy and easy to use. Cannot back light the picture in Auto setting and constantly changing settings. Not for the professional photographer, but a good point and shoot. I liked it because it still uses conveniently available alkaline or (NI-MH) rechargeable batteries. Zoom and LED are good and it's a good value for the price.

Easy to use, logical controls, and it uses regular AA batteries.

I replaced my Canon 570 with the PowerShot A590IS. I am not a techie, just a point and shoot picture taker. I lost too many pictures due to the shakes or using the wrong mode. The "Easy" mode on the A590 takes all the mystery out of picture taking. As I get more familiar with the camera, I will use other functions, but already my photos are much better and I have more confidence in using it....PLUS it costs less than the camera it replaces!!

I did alot of research before buying this camera. Being that I am not camera savy I wanted something that I could point and shoot and get brilliant pictures. I was in the market to get the Canon A560 but they were sold out at all the stores in my area. The clerk showed me the A470 and I was instantly impressed by it. The A470 was easy to learn how to use. I downloaded the pictures for the first time today and was impressed by the quality. It doesn't matter if the photos are taken inside or outdoors - the color is vibrant and the image is crisp and clear. I am having so much fun with this camera - probably even driving my kids crazy by taking pictures all the time. I think anyone who purchases this camera will be very happy with it.

I previously purchased a PowerShot A640 and was so impressed with it that I purchased the A740 for my granddaughter. For the price, it's hard to beat the Canon. Many features to allow you to shoot any way you want, or just set it on Auto and point and shoot.

My only complaint with this camera is the flash recharge rate; it is slow. It only uses 2 AA batteries. Beyond that, I like the size, the big view screen and its ease of operation.

I'm not a fan of the tiny cameras. Have 2 DSLR's (D200's) but felt I needed an easier carry around camera for hiking, fishing and vacations. A friend had the Canon A470 and raved about the image quality, simplicity amd price. Got one from Amazon and love it!! Not too small and a quick picture taker. Perfect for someone with rather large hands. Priced at a little over 100 bucks because it does not have a huge zoom or IS, but it does a great job for basic picture taking.

I purchased this camera after exploring several digitals, looking for the best macro (close up) capabilities. This turned out to work well for what I needed it for, which is to take extreme close up shots of gemstone rings.

Others didn't like the rechargible batteries, but I won't be using this camera for much else but taking shots right at home. Because of this, I don't use the battery power at all, but purchased a compatible AC/DC cord on eBay for under $20.00. Actually, a seller had several brand new Canon ACK800 cords, not just some no-brand item, and this turned out to be a great accessory (and a lot cheaper than the ACK800 package on the Canon website).

If you want a camera that has more adjustments and features than a point and shoot camera, but don't want to pay for an expensive SLR, this camera is it ... and at an affordable price.

P.S. My photography buff uncle gave me a thumbs up on this purchase!!

I think this is a great camera fr the money. The specs are great for a reasonable price. It does not have a viewfinder window instead the lcd screen is the window. It took a little bit to get used too, I am happy I got this camera.

This camera has met every need of our family in our picture taking and videos.

Pictures are crystal clear. Typical easy off load by cord or memory card of pictures and videos to any computer or photo program. We have 4 computers with a different photo program on each one.

You do have to read the manual. This is not an out of the box, point and shoot camera. There are many many features available, and I recommend rereading the manual after three months to find out which of the many features you have not used, but could be using.

Price was fair, normal cost for this good a camera.

My wife has used it extensively and loves it.
We our "senior citizens" therefore if we can master it, anyone should be able to.

Very pleased.

I recommend that you purchase a larger memory card than the one that comes with the camera so you will have plenty of storage space.

Amazing versatility in a small, lightweight camera. Uses only 2 AA batteries; we had been accustomed to needing 4. User manual is a PDF file. You'll need to purchase a larger capacity memory card, as we found out on Thanksgiving day.

THIS CAMERA IS THE WORST. I BOUGHT IT NEW AT BEST BUY, TOOK IT ON VACATION 1 WEEK LATER, AND I GOT A LENS ERROR RESTART CAMERA SIGN- MISSED ALL MY VACATION PICS, BEST BUY WOULDNT TAKE IT BACK, SO CALLED CANON, WENT THRU TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, PAID $50 TO FED EX IT TO THEM TO FIX, THEY SENT IT BACK "FIXED" AND WHEN I TRIED IT, HAD THE SAME ERROR. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA OR ANY OTHER CANON PRODUCT- THEY ARE TERRIBLE.
SINCE THEN I BOUGHT A SONY CYBERSHOT AND AM THRILLED WITH IT. CANON CUSTOMER CERVICE IS TOTALLY UNRESPONSIVE SO I AM OUT ABOUT $ 300 WITH A BROKEN - NEW- CAMERA.

My photos are clear and the camera manages motion and light effectively. this camera is an excellent value and choice for anyone who needs a camera for travel (it's light and compact) or for family photos.

Works excellent, is no easy like others, but you can make more versus a light user's cameras. It's perfect for my job, I can control the camera and store the pictures directly on my PC.

Only one desire, the size, its no easy for travel, but no big deal

I've been using this for a month or two and can say it's a fairly decent camera. It works well in day light, and OK indoors. Not at all good as a night video camera.

This is the first camera I have owned that only has an LCD screen, and it is not that usable directly in the Arizona sun.

It certainly is well made and easy to use. However, I find, me mind you, that the zoom control is upside down to how I would imagine it functioning. I also find that the shutter button is a little too far forward.

Video seems to drain the battery pretty quickly so buy some spares.

It does not have the greatest set of options but this is a camera you'll have in your pocket and is not intended to be the be all and all. It's image stabilizer works well except at 8X and beyond.

All in all a great little camera to carry in your back back or glove box.

Purchased at a friend's recommendation, for a trip to Austria and the Czech Republic. I was very impressed with the quality of pictures, the variety of presets available, the ability to zoom for better shots of distant scenery, the battery life (only needed batteries ONCE in eleven days). If I had a complaint, it would be that on Auto and Indoor Scene settings, the camera frequently thought I needed a flash when I didn't; turning it off got rid of a flash glare on a marble wall plaque, for example. That's absolutely the only complaint I can offer.

After owning and being frustrated with a number of digital cameras including several Kodaks, a Ricoh and my latest, an HP, I felt that I could never find the "perfect" camera for my tastes. My son owns an older version of this model and took some fantastic pictures. After seeing his latest shots of Alaska I looked around and now I, too, have a camera that takes fantastic pictures. I have only used the "point and shoot" aspects but intend to take it to its limits, using aperature and Fstop features. This is absolutely a great camera for the price!

I got an awesome deal on the camera, Cheaper than I could buy locally. I bought the camera to take pictures of my fish in fish tanks. It does a real good job. I was successful the first time I took pictures. Very satisfied with my purchase. Very good point and shoot camera. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a inexpensive and easy to use camera.

This is a very nice camera. I am quite happy with it after upgrading from the Sony I had for about 4 years. I love the 10x optical zoom - for example, you can take very good pictures of youth sporting events. Cannon takes very sharp and clear pictures with good color. It also takes good videos.
Just a couple of things I miss from my old Sony: the date-stamp is only available on the "postcard" size (2 MP) images, whereas my Sony allowed date stamps at all settings (Cannon allows date stamps be added to photos you print, but I think most people view their photos on their computers and don't print many photos anymore). Also, my Sony had a setting that added 5 seconds of audio to each photo - that is a great feature that Cannon doesn't have.
As others have noted, the batteries don't last too long. However, I am happy with my rechargeable batteries, which work fine.
Overall, I am very happy with it - I would certainly recommend it.
