One of my key criteria was size: some of the best compacts were hardly pocket size, so I counted those ones out. But the Ixus 980 really surprised me when it arrived: compared to my Sony W12, it is ultra thin and the first thing I needed was to attach the wrist strap, in case of dropping it. I am getting used to the tiny dimensions now and it meets this size criterion superbly.
Another selling point of the 980 IS was its provision of a viewfinder. These seem to be becoming obsolete on compacts and clearly everyone is supposed to be happy with using the LCD screen to compose pictures. Some of the reviews suggested that the Ixus viewfinder was too tiny to be of much use, but I still wanted to have one. I have to admit, it is tiny and I am so far just getting used to being one of the crowd and composing with the LCD screen, a new experience. Of course, some of the larger compacts have larger LCD screens or even rotating and tiltable ones, and I don't know at this stage how useful this small viewfinder will be.
Lens Quality, Image Stabilisation and the host of other electronic and mechanical factors which contribute to high IQ (Image Quality), were also top criteria. The 980 IS got very good reviews on its IQ and so far I've seen nothing to contradict that. The combination of metering, auto-focussing and IS works very well, and in general it's a very highly specified compact, with many parallels to my 550D. Its speed in continuous shooting, even indoors, is particularly commendable.
Reading the reviews, I was aware that I might be losing out on the lack of a really wide-angle lens and some aspects of movie shooting: to wit, no zooming while shooting and no continuous auto-focus. But the more highly specified compacts which made good these defects all seemed to have disadvantages of their own. I was tempted by the prospect of the new Canon Power Shot S100, which seemed likely to shoot straight to the top of the best compact list; but one or two early reviews of it from across the Atlantic found what seemed to me to be some significant faults.
So after much inner debate, I plumped for the Ixus 980 IS as the best of the current crop, only to find that it was a rare animal! Quite a paradox, as nothing that Canon has produced subsequently seems quite as good. All I could find were used models, so I took the risk of buying one advertised as a "display model"/as new, with 10 months' warranty. So far I can only say that the description "as new" seems to be totally correct.
I am very happy with this purchase: if you are buying a compact to take with you everywhere, then size (pocketability) is crucial, I think, and, if it's your 2nd/reserve camera, you don't need to tick every technological box, but for a lot of money you ought at least to be getting a high IQ, which this camera certainly delivers through its outstanding lens quality, speed and 14.7 megapixel CCD sensor.
The colors are TERRIBLE!... there is a yellowish tint that makes people look sick, specially when taking indoor pictures.
After some time of use, the camera started giving an error "CHANGE THE BATTERIES" and shuts off, even with brand new batteries.
I tried a youtube fix that worked for a few days and now the problem is back again.

Overall I don't think I would recommend this camera.
Delivery was very fast, properly packed, all as described.
There is little that needs to be said past that, but I must meet the minimum length for this review

And the batteries seem to last forever which is a real bonus. I've always taken a spare set of AA's with me but I've never had to use them.
And the flip screen on the back is such a good idea.
I can't recommend this camera highly enough
I am actually surprised so many people have reviewed it so positively so I wonder if I was just unlucky but as I had a comparison I can only say I was deeply shocked at just how badly it performed compared to my A720IS (which was bought for a similar price).
It is one thing to lose the viewfinder - I knew and accepted that when I bought it - but this camera struggles on SO many levels. Here are the ones I found most frustrating:
- It takes an age to charge the flash even when using NEW premium Lithium AA batteries (unlike the A720IS the flash was never ready - you always get this delay first use);
- Worse still when on fully AUTOMATIC settings it often struggles to focus when taking pictures of CDs on my bed for my eBay listings (something I did frequently with ease using the A720IS and all previous cameras I owned). Further more when out and about I find it in general does not focus as well - so often you have to press the shutter for a 2nd or 3rd time to get the object you want crystal clear;
- Furthermore it so often wrongly indicates a flash is not required on low light situations when so clearly you need it. Often this is most apparent when you are photographing an object or something with a lot of white in it/pale in colour (again never an issue with the A720IS).
All of the scenarios I encountered made it impossible for me to keep this camera so I re-sold it at a loss. I honestly feel I wasted my money here with this model. I am not saying all Canon's are bad as I have for years respected the brand. But this model killed my creative spirit and made me very unhappy as it just did not perform well enough for a £100+ camera. If it had been £50 I may have overlooked these failings but NOT at the price I paid!
On a happier note I have since bought a Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera (18-55mm VR Lens Kit) and you know something I feel like I have died and gone to heaven. As much as I still have a need for a pocket automatic once you get you first SLR my god you never look back. Some of the amazing shots I have taken with this baby coupled with the speed and performance just blows me away each time I take it out.
That's my point really photography is about being creative and enjoying the whole experience so it should never have these limitations which hold you back from focusing on why you are trying to take a photo in the first place. Bad job Canon - you can do better than the SX150!
