This is a super easy to use point-and-shoot camera. I love Canon products. My first digital was the Canon A400 with the IP3000 printer. I was amazed at the quality of the printed pictures. Unfortunately, my husband lost my A400 on a hunting trip. Surprisingly, the A590 pictures don't seem quite as vibrant. Overall, the pictures are great,especially compared to the Kodak cameras in the same price range. I definitely appreciate the zoom on the A590 compared to my old A400. I highly recommend this camera for beginners. It's pretty much fool-proof, and I'm very happy with it.

The Canon Powershot A1000IS is THE BEST. Not for the artist, but for regular people with kids or pets wanting to immortalize the greatest moments of their life. A camera that can take great pictures quickly. It is easy to carry around and the image stabilizer works wonders. Look no further!

I bought this camera as a birthday gift for my daughter who wanted a small "point and shoot" to carry to her son's events without having to haul her big camera. She says it is truly "point and shoot" with the added bonus of making great pictures. It is so small and light weight that she just keeps it in her purse and always has it with her. I chose it because it had good reviews, is fully automatic, and has surprisingly advanced features for as inexpensive as it was. She loves it!

I can't begin to express how happy I am with this camera. The lens and 14.7mp sensor produce some of the best images I've ever seen on a small point and shoot camera. The auto-focus is intelligent and snappy with virtually no delay between framing your picture and pressing the shutter. The button placement is super. I found the varying levels of features very intuitively placed if you feel like getting creative with the settings. Form wise, the subtle curves on the body really make it just a nice thing to hold in your hands. Build quality seemed substantial enough for me to confidently ditch the case I bought and carry it about in my pocket instead for most of the time. Thank you Canon, for rekindling my love of snappy snaps again.

Personally, I think I purchased too much camera! I was looking for an easy point and shoot with a good zoom. The camera is a little bigger than I expected and already presented a problem when I was out with my friends and family. I kept putting the camera away instead holding on to it. The time in between pics for the flash to recharge is unacceptable! After reading so many reviews it seems the cameras with AA batteries tend to have a delay in between pics, why I don't know. That alone has steered me away from this camera. I'm a mom of 2 active boys and I wanted a camera that's easy to take along, take quick pics and easy to learn. The camera however, does take amazing pics and great video. However, a ton of my pics came out blurry, especially if I didn't remember to lift up the flash which I never did. There is just too much too learn with this camera and just too many features and setting. A little too overwhelming for me. Curious as to why the flash recharge is so long? Does anyone know? So I'm returning this camera and getting my SD750 fixed for the $100 Canon is going to charge me or I'm getting the A590is, not sure. Suggestions welcomed.

This is a solid camera. I got it for my grandfather who was making the transition from film to digital. I have an SD1000 which he thought was too small for him. This camera was a nice balance of function, zoom, and price. It has enough options to be useful to the more advanced user, but it doesn't bog the camera down with stuff you will never use.

I bought the camera in January 2009 and got the dreaded lens error in April 2009. Since it was under warranty, I sent it back to Canon, and they replaced the parts for free. Since then, the lag time has seemed to double. I feels like almost 10 second before I can take another shot, which is longer than it was before they fixed it. I'm a little nervous its going to fail again. It takes good low light pictures, which is what I was looking for. And the scenery pictures are good too. I got it for $100 on amazon, which was a good deal. But, be warned. Keep the box it came in for when you need to send it back.

We've had this camera for 3 years and it has been an ideal device. Some of its highlights:
* Low price
* Very solid
* Takes decent shots
* Uses standard AA batteries
* Simple to use

Low lights:
* Resolution a bit low
* Could be thinner to fit small pockets

All in all, for the price, the great pictures it takes and the longevity, I couldn't be more pleased.

I'm having trouble turning this product on and being able to see an image through the window. At the beach earlier this summer, it would not turn on at all even replacing the battery. I'm disappointed in it's performance. When it is working the pictures are great, but still sticks turning on. Maybe I should have returned it and received another one.

There are quite a few extremely informative reviews on this camera, so I'll merely add my vote.

I'm 100% happy with this camera. I bought this very inexpensive camera to have with me during active adventures where using a camera means risking loss or damage. I got FAR more camera than I expected for the price.

The AA batteries are absolutely a positive. Use Sanyo Eneloop batteries, and you will have plenty of shots, and much more shelf life than proprietary batteries.

I'm a techologically-challenged grandmother, but even I was able to get awesome shots of scenery and wildlife on our recent trip to Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. I even got a good closeup of a family of mountain goats that were at least 300 yards away. We traveled by train and bus, and when traveling at lower speeds I managed to get some good shots from a moving vehicle. Shots taken in less than optimum light even came out quite good.

This really is an excellent camera! Small, light and easy to handle; it'll even fit nicely into a shirt pocket! It has a massive 10 megapixels, sharp telephoto lens, image stabiliser so no more occasional blurred shots,lots of easy-to-use features and simple computer software to download with. To be honest, there's really not much more you actually need with a camera; it uses "JPEG" to store info, but unless you need to shoot in ultra high definition ("RAW" or "TIF"), or intend to enlarge your prints to poster size and beyond, this just isn't a problem.

This is really an amazing pocket camera. We didn't go for the latest Ixus 990 as it only apparently takes HD movies, and we don't have an HD TV so didn't see the point. The flash recharges very quickly. The focus is very quick so you can press the button at very short notice and get a great picture. The metal case looks robust enough, though not really able to fathom out why Canon dropped the titanium feature, as was a good selling point of the IXUS 900.

Another reviewer somewhere made a valid point that Canon, the brains behind this great camera, seem apparently oblivious that the memory card they provide is really pointlessly too small, so best to buy a big one at the same time as you get this camera, as you'll be taking loads of pictures.

Bought this for myself for a Christmas gift. UGH. The book that comes with it is a monster and the rate that this camera eats batteries is nothing short of amazing. I can put 2 brand new batteries and they will need to be replaced by the end of the SAME DAY. There are way to change the shutter speed, but as I mentioned before, to get thru and comprehend the user manual, you need to be a graduate from M.I.T.

Camera is nice, but SO NOT worth the amount of frustration.

Bought this camera after sending back a panasonic fz28 which had terrible audio in the video. This camera is great the pictures are good and the video is brilliant. Video playback is choppy on my PC due to the codecs this camera uses for recording so you have to convert them which is a bit of a pain. I use quicktime pro to convert them to mpeg using a high bit rate gives excellent results and playback on my PS3 is flawless. I'd recommend sandisk extreme III memory too as it is very fast which you need for recording video and for quick burst photos. The build quality is easily as good as a DSLR. High recommended after my disappointment with the fz28.

I have this camera for over a year. It is a great camera for routine photography. It is nto for professional jobs but it can take great pictures if used professionally. I bought it for family use and we all are happy with this. The video mode is good as long as you do not use the zoom and do not more the camera to much during making the movie. Again we use it to make small clips of our kids playing in doors. Flash is not very strong and not recommended for indoors unless you have ample light otherwise pictures are grainy. For outside its a great camera.

I love this camera. It takes very sharp pictures and it is easy to use. It is compact enough to take with me wherever I go. It takes excellent pictures in poor lighting conditions. I also like the convenience of using AA batteries as long as I use the rechargeble long-lasting kind then I don't have to worry about short battery-life issues and having to carry bulky/heavy nickel cadmium type batterris that require a special charger. When I travel abroad I rather just carry a couple of extra AA batteries in my pocket or in my backpack instead of bulkier batteries with a corresponding charger. If I lose my batteries they're easier and cheaper to replace than the other kinds. I do recommend a simple carrying case to keep it protected because it does look a little bit fragile. Better to be safe and invest in a carrying case.

I just read a review that said this camera has a long "recycle" time on the flash. It said that you have to wait ten seconds after putting the flash up to use it. I can put the flash up and immediately take a picture with it. I don't know if I am doing anything different, but it works for me. Also, I have never had problem with low light shooting. I have been able to get quite a few nice pictures in low light with this camera.

I purchased this camera before a big trip and only had a short period of time to get use to it. I found it great to work with, the zoom is fabulous and the pictures are crisp and clear. Yes, it does take some time between shots espically with the flash but the quaility is worth it.

I bought this camera for work a few years ago. It takes excellent photos every time, with the exception of moving targets like my daughter. That is true with every camera though. I would highly recommend this camera for the price. It is also very easy to use. My wife and I like it so much that we use it instead of the more expensive Sony Cybershot we have at home. Buy this one with confidence.

BTW....Beware of Canon videocameras though! Warranty is worthless!

Great shots, easy to use. Able to take dramatic, detailed photos. We have a close-up of a bumble bee gathering honey. You can see the lace of the wings, the fuzzy edges of the black & yellow stripes, and the fuzzle-stuff on the legs. Totally Awesome!

After researching affordable, good digital camera's for months on end, I finally decided to buy this camera. So far, I have not been disappointed with my choice. The pictures come out crystal clear which is primarily what I was concerned about in a digital camera. You're able to record videos on it as well, and there are a decent amount of features that come with it. The camera comes with software, a memory card that can hold about 10 photos (buying another memory card along with the camera is a good idea), and batteries. If your looking for a digital camera that's not too techie and sophisticated and can take excellent pictures all for under a $100 then go for this baby. You won't regret it.

Bought the SX10IS recently. Had done a lot of research prior to this decision as I was really conflicted whether to invest in a DSLR or a prosumer camera. In the end, given my usage, I think I made a very wise decision.

The range of this camera is fantastic. Like most canon products it is very technologically advanced and it did take some time to figure out options. It probably has more than I will ever use.

Got some good results in very low lighting and it was not as large or heavy as I expected it to be. The zoom lense is simply unbelievable but a tripod is required for really exploring the distance.

This is second camera and again a Canon. I had waited for Digital tech to reach a point where it becomes worth investing. This camera fit the price, quality and feature equation perfectly. In my view, its a better buy than an entry level DSLR.

I bought the SX1 instead of SX10 because it had the HD capability. Unfortunately, the HD movie looks fragmented. I tried 3 different memory cards, but the HD movies still look fragmented/jerky. It is not worth paying 200$ more for the poor HD feature. I will return the SX1 and get the SX10 instead; it takes the same great pictures and is 200$ less.

I'm a Canon fan, no doubt about it -- and this camera is yet another reason why. Canon continues to make high quality cameras, packed with features, for a reasonable price. I previously owned a Digital Rebel SLR (300D) and a pocket Powershot S410. The S410 was starting to show its age, and I was tired of dragging out the big 'ole SLR just to take a random picture or two here or there. I decided it was time to replace both cameras with a single camera that can offer me a lot of the best features of both of the previous cameras.

The 10x zoom on this camera is fantastic. This is a longer zoom range than I had on my normal "walk-around" SLR lens on my Rebel. It will definitely come in handy when walking around outdoors. The 9mp sensor creates nice quality photos. Yes, the noise level in higher ISO photos can be noticeable, but frankly that is kinda expected in most smaller cameras with smaller sensor sizes -- it's the nature of the beast. The size of the camera is great. Its larger than my S410, but still small enough that I can toss it in my jeans pocket and walk around with it if I want. The screen on the back is huge and quite nice. Its also nice to have a 640x480 @ 30fps movie mode, though I highly doubt I'll use it very often.

I have had this camera for only 1 week and still trying to learn about it, but what I have done so far with it, I love! It's my 4th digital camera in about 17 years, the last 3 were sony's. I decided to try a different brand this time and was sold on the features and reliability of this particular canon model. The only little thing I don't like is that the lens cap is not attached as is with the sony's. I am experimenting with macro photography and this does a great job!

My previous camera - a Canon IXUS suffered water damage on holiday - my water bottle leaked in my bag - and consequently did not work at all. On returning from hols, the natural replacement was the latest Canon IXUS model. It seems OK but am disappointed by the size of the viewing screen which is somewhat smaller than my previous camera. In hindsight I should have done more research before buying a replacement.

Spent LOADS of time researching the newest digital cameras. Settled on this one due to the balance offering of 10x zoom (who's image stabilizers REALLY do work!), 8mp, face detection, video capabilities, ample shooting programs (kids and pets, snow, night snapshot, and stitch assist), all at a reasonable price. I have a Sony handycam that gives me much grief (has 20x zoom and an image stabilizer that deteriorates significantly at it's maximum usage).

Other nice-to-have features on this camera is the camera orientation detection which means it automatically adjusts (re-orients) itself when you want to take taller shots (turning the camera on it's side). In addition to face detection, there is also the face selector which lets you pick a primary face to focus on. Image depth and clarity is amazing at 8mp, provides pictures that more true-to-life and perfect for cropping or enlarging.

Canon's non-proprietary output formats (.JPEG picture format and .AVI video formats) are highly compatiable with every video editing software available, which unlike some Sony products (.VOB video file formats), makes using this camera and it's outputs easy, affordable, flexible, and just plain fun!

My only "gripe" is the memory, which is really two fold (1)that Canon doesn't offer internal backup memory...all images are stored on the meager 16mb memory card (included in the purchase) and (2)that Canon couldn't afford to offer at least a 1GB memory card included with purchase. The 16mb only holds 3-4 images (depending on your subject complexity). I plan to maximize this little camera's capabilities, not just for still images but for video as well, so I've opted for the maximum available memory of the new 16GB SDHC Class 6 memory card. At the very least, one will need to purchase at least a 1GB, otherwise you will need to stay close to your computer to clean your card after every 4 shots.

Overall, the camera is super easy to use (both on the front end and on the back end) and when one wants to take spur-of-the-moment shots, this camera is johnny-on-the-spot. Would recommend this camera with the caveat that the purchaser will absolutely need to know the total cost includes the additional purchase of a more substantial memory card.

I've had this camera for a few days, and already I love it. The points that have charmed me so far:

1- very low shutter lag. you can take a picture quickly, and capture exactly the scene you want (not the scene 2 to 5 seconds after you point your camera).

2- takes standard AA rechargeable batteries. also, you can turn off the LCD and use the old school view finder to save battery power in a pinch.

3- the 'print' button is programmable, so you can use it for a variety of other functions (useful to me because I almost never plug my camera directly into a printer).

4- the whole design of the camera is intuitive and easy to use.

The only less-than-stellar aspect of this camera is its size. It's not bulky, but there are much tinier cameras in this class on the market. I wasn't quite prepared to remove a star for that, though, as a reduction in size would likely mean an increase in price. I think the trade-off is fine.

Overall, I highly recommend this camera for point-and-shoot purposes. It's easily my favorite of the ~5 digital cameras I've owned over the years.

This review is a critique of Amazon's change in the way it delivers items to the purchaser. I selected the super saver option and the item has historically arrived within 5 business days. Typically less. I ordered this item and it has been two weeks and it still has not arrived. Amazon needs to communicate changes to shipping policies and not let me find out by items not showing up in a timely manner. I will not order from Amazon if that is what is going on and I recoment that you purchase elsewhere.

If you want a camera that you can just point and shoot, this is it. Canon cameras are wonderful. This is the 5th Canon camera that I have purchased. Some of the purchases were for my daughters. Everyone loves their Canons.

This camera in particular takes really sharp pictures on the auto setting. You have a choice of 3 manual flash settings if you like to use them, a 10x zoom and a 40x digital zoom, a 3" LCD screen, image stabilization and it uses AA batteries which you can find in just about any store if you need to purchase new ones.

The software works great with Windows operating systems. The Easy Photo software makes editing pictures easy. I love it most of all.

I would recommend this camera for anyone.

I love this camera. I'm just a point and shooter but am having a great time learning how to use the more advanced features that this camera has to offer.

It takes great pics with the auto setting but I have been using the "P" program mode with the "my colors" set to vivid to get great pics of the fall foliage.

The video feature also works great and records sound as well.

You can spend thousands on a digicam but for the casual photographer like myself, this camera rocks. And at a price almost anyone can afford.

Oh yea, the macro feature on this camera is fun to play with getting great close up pics of things like flowers, close ups of abe's face on a five dollar bill, etc.....

The 32 MB card that comes with the camera can only take 8 pics at the highest resolution, so make sure you get at least a 1 gig card. The price of the SDHC (high capacity) cards at Amazon were so inexpensive that I bought a 4 gig Sandisk Ultra II card for an extra[...]

I also bought the genuine Canon carrying case for another [...]. It has a belt loop which makes it easy to carry around.

For the money, the Canon A590is is an awesome value. Highly recommended.

The A590IS is the 8-MP sibling of the 7-Megapixel 570IS. I've played with both, and at an almost equal price, the 590 is the way to go.

- "Automatic" mode makes it easy as pie for point-and-shoot. Photo novices will find the Automatic -- and above that, Easy -- modes a welcome way to "just take the picture already!". The auto-focus, facial recognition, and adjustment features all respond quickly at half-depress... lining up a great shot is simple and quick.
- "Manual" mode gives you reign over everything about the photo, from the white balance, to the aperture, flash output, and even the part of the screen it uses to calculate gamma compensation. When you've got time to make the picture turn out just right, this little camera won't disappoint.
- The lens isn't half bad either, giving you focus-adjustment down to 2 inches from the end of the lens, and incremental up to 10 feet.

As with most new Digital Cameras, the viewfinder has been long-since replaced by the back LCD, which provides a helpful and adjustable HUD. The color spectral graphs are especially nice to have on-hand if you're worried about balancing multiple shots against each other.

The only cons are inherent in the design: the viewfinder and flash are almost useless when the camera is fitted with an optional lens hood / adapter. The buttons and dial adjustments are also small, so it pays to familiarize yourself with the user interface.

All in all, a fantastic camera for the price. Image stabilization, a 4x zoom, optional attachments, and a trim pricetag make this a great deal for anyone looking to upgrade to a non-SLR picture snapper.

I purchased this camera a month ago as Consumer Reports gave it high marks. It takes nice pictures and the video function is camcorder quality. Unfortunately yesterday I got the dreaded "lens error restart camera" message. Basically that disables the camera. Even if there is a problem with the lens (and not clear there is) it also won't allow me to download the pictures as it just shuts off after several seconds. Since it is under warranty I will get it repaired. Turns out this is a common problem across Canon camera lines.

I want to preface and say that I am not a professional photographer, but an amateur amateur photographer. I like to take quality pictures without having to go thru alot of hassle. My previous camera was a Kodak Easyshare C875, which is a great camera and allowed me to take some pretty awesome shots...but I knew i was ready for more. I take my friends' kids' pictures in every season...again, its really just for practice for me, and she reaps the benefit.

So I do my homework and read reviews on this camera, and pretty much everyone who uses it likes it. I get it in my hands finally and i LOVE the way it feels....it is a little bulky, but I like the weight in my hands. I love the swing out LCD screen, which also doubles as a protective measure for it too. The pictures I have taken so far with this camera have been of amazing quality, and print out fantastic. I like that this camera is great for people of all abilities too....as I learn more about photography, I can do more with the camera. But someone could even "point and click" with this camera too. I cant wait to be able to get more out of this camera. I love it!

For all intents and purposes, this is a very plain looking camera, but it has some astounding qualities: the size is fabulous, fits neatly into a small inobtrusive pouch on your hip, no fussy controls and those there are, are extremely easy to use. The picture quality is absolutley brilliant giving crystal clear photos with stunning colour matching on the large rear lcd screen. It has easy to use software which makes it very quick to download your holiday pictures to the pc... It is worth the very good price and for a first camera or for the more aspiring photographer would make an excellent purchase.

...my daughter needed a camera for a digital photography class and this is the model the teacher recommended as the lowest-priced camera capable of doing all the things larger more-expensive digital SLRs can do, like manual focus, manual exposure, f-stops etc. Turned out to be a good choice; she's learning all about those things and it takes great pictures. Only thing is that compared to cameras like the Elph or the CoolPix, it's bulky and she doesn't like carrying it around while just sightseeing. I'm hoping she'll give it to me when she's done and I'll get her a "cute" camera instead!

I am very satisfied with the Canon PowerShot A590 IS. I read many reviews of many digital cameras and I found this one to have the most features I wanted for the price. This camera takes great pictures indoors and out. The 4x zoom is great. Nice close-ups. I am glad I read the directions though. When in auto mode you have to be sure and pause halfway when pushing the shutter button so the camera can focus. Otherwise, blurry picture. I love the video feature, which I didn't even expect, I now use all the time. With the software it comes with you can take stills from any frame of a video. I did buy an accessory kit to go with it because the memory card it came with only held a few pictures and I wanted rechargable batteries. I have had it for about a month and use it all the time. For $109 it was a steal.

I have owned the S3 and the S5 before buying the SX10.
So far, the camera is excellent although I would like a remote control.
I have owned Canon products for the last 50 years and have always been pleased with the quality.

I purchased this camera to replace an older Canon Powershot (a 3 Megapixel version.) I was looking for a very portable camera (but not credit card sized) to take decent pictures - something to compliment my 35mm film SLR. Recently I went to the San Diego Wild Animal Park and figured this would be a good test of the camera. I was pleasantly surprised at how great the pictures came out. Usually I end up doing a little color correction on my digital photos but I will hardly have to touch the over 100 shots I took. I brought them into work the next day to show people and EVERYBODY kept asking me what was the model and make of my camera.
The images are crisp and clean. The digital zoom works wonderfully and you can get some very clean closeups. I was able to get head and shoulder shots of a cheetah over 500 feet away. The image stabilization worked well. I took a few shots of some animals in a slowly moving vehicle. I fully expected the images to blur but they didn't. The only thing I didn't test was the video capture mode but I expect it to work well from what I found.
One slight warning for anyone that plans to use the stitch assist (for panorama shots.) My previous camera had this feature and it assembled the photo as you went along (creating a very small picture in a small LCD on the camera back.) This camera assembles the pictures in your computer once you get back and download them ... but it does it much easier. Before you had to line up the pictures in the small LCD screen. With this camera you just have to get it close and the software will line it up automatically. Both cameras show the previous picture taken so you know where to line up the next shot but this time the software just asks what order the pictures were taken (which I guess means you can take them out of order) and then you click assemble and they all line up. It is quite easy.
I would highly recommend this camera for anyone interested in a very portable camera. I think the days of not using my film camera are getting closer and closer.

This is my first digital camera. At age 70, there was a lot to learn but I enjoyed learning. The information booklets helped me install the software, load the memory card, take my first pictures, and print them out. Consumer Reports had recommended the Canon Powershot camera and Amazon.com had a very good price with free shipping. I'm so pleased with the camera and the equipment that came with it. I can't compare it with any other digital camera because this is my first one but I'm glad I chose it. I will probably buy another memory card for use when taking several pictures without erasing. It has performed so well for me that I gave it a five star rating. This isn't intended to be a detailed rating of each function of the camera just a review from a satisfied customer.
