I bought this for my daughter. The lens is f1.8 at wide and is powerful enough to capture decent pics without needing a flash. There is a manual setting that will help her learn some of the more complex techniques. A great camera from Canon, the battery seems to go on forever on a full charge. Very happy with the purchase!

I recommend it for "serious" amateurs. The instructions didn't match the G-15 though which caused a few learning problems. I used to use the S-95 and would lose a lot of snaps for poor quality, but very few are wasted with this unit.

Very impressed by 16 megapixels and x 32 lens. Pictures are clear and beautiful. Drawbacks: a little heavier than the average point and shoot you have to manually open the flash, and no matter how many times I have set time, date, etc, it keeps showing up every time I turn the camera on.

Just purchased this camera and was surprised to see the amount of battery power it uses even when not using the flash. I went through 6 batteries for a 70 minute long concert. Not good at taking action photos in low light many came out blurry. I loved my old PowerShot which I used for 6 years. This one I can't wait to replace it after just a few days of owning it.

I fell in love with this camera the second it came out of the Box. I'm an advanced amateur photographer and was looking for something to replace the DSLR while on business trips - usually the times where you kick yourself for not having a good camera with you. I bought this after trying Fujifilm X-E1 which I still have, but cannot fit in my laptop case. This camera is with me pretty much whenever I'm out of the house, shoots, RAW, all the settings I need are there and feels great in hand. I added a Transcend wireless card to it, which made it a really good Pro gear.

camera is differnt from d10 (which i loved). menu navigation to delete, set up timer shots, etc is harder to do than the d10. shape of camera is easier to carry because of slim profile. sad that only one port was set up for wrist string. bigger screen helps but flash only allows for auto or no flash (miss the manual override). overall good camera for water/shock/outdoor activities.

The camera took decent pictures, but it has a major design flaw: the battery door gets stuck, and when forced open, eventually the entire camera just stops working. It happened to me less than a year after buying the camera, sadly, and by doing some research I discovered that it is a fairly common problem with these types of cameras. SO DON'T BUY THEM. Also, Canon no longer offers repair services for this type of camera, so there's that, too.

Bought it because it appeared to be a lot of camera for the money. However, I was somewhat disappointed by its performance. My main complaint is that it takes a very long time to recover between pictures - especially when using the flash - you'll miss a lot of good shots waiting for it to reload - and it gobbles up AA batteries. In addition, the zoom control is way too extreme - it's either fully engaged or not - makes it very difficult to zoom in or out just a little more or less - so after 30 seconds of trying to get it to stop in the right spot you finally just give up and take the picture wherever it stopped last - frustrating. In reality, you don't really need this much zoom in a little camera like this - you'll see what I mean if you buy it. However, it does take a nice picture and the wide-angle lens makes a huge difference - no problem getting entire rooms or landscapes in the picture. And one last thing - it's really not a "pocket" camera - it is small - but not that small.

The powerShot N is a tiny little camera, perfect to carry along in your pocket.It has a great zoom for its size and takes very good photographs.The flash isn't too powerful zo night pictures, even close up portraits came out a little dark.There maybe solutions to this but I have unfortunatley not had the time to check them out as I dropped it in the water.It doesn't float and it isn't waterproof (I knew this...) and it went straight to the bottom of the Caribbean sea.I bought a Powershot 270 SX270 instead.

One of our sons, who is an amateur photographer, recommended this camera for our level of expertise. He was right on. It is easy to use, takes terrific photos, and has been all we were looking for. Light enough to carry all over, good in high levels and low levels of light, focuses well in automatic but not too complicated to use with personal settings.

This camera has a very good picture quality and a great zoom. I bought this after taking my SX120 to the beach and getting it full of sand, and it is great! Very happy with my purchase. Plus it's much more advanced than the 120 and cost $50 less than I paid for the 120 several years ago.

I can better evaluate the batteries after the trip to see how they recharge & store charges. The last pair of Lenmark batteries were 50-50 with one incapable of holding a charge for longer than a day or 50 pic's. Hopefully they have improved their technology.

This lens cap is far better than the one that was provided by Canon.
The one from Canon easily fell off.
This one stays firmly attached to the camera lens.
With the lanyard attached to the camera strap, this one will not be lost.
Great product.

The title says it all. I bought one of these in early 2009, and used it up until last week, after which it finally stopped working (it always says "Change the batteries", even with brand new batteries in it). I took nearly 5,000 pictures with this camera during those 5 years, including pictures on one European vacation, numerous hiking/backpacking trips, and general pictures of family/friends. It is very pocketable (easily fits in the hip pockets of my jeans) and durable (I dropped it on the ground numerous times). The picture quality can be pretty good, it really helps to use the "P" setting and program it yourself.

For a camera that cost $110 brand-new, I've been extremely happy with it. Kind of sad to see mine finally die. I bought a PowerShot SX160IS to replace it with.

I lost my Canon charger and like most didn't want to pay over the odds for a Canon-branded model. Whilst I'll pay over the odds for their lenses, the charger doesn't really fit into the category of items that benefit from the extra spent. It charges my Canon Ixus 220-HS batteries just as the old charger did and my photos still look the same ;-). Why pay more for a Canon charger?

My G11 ended up with a scratch on the lens so I was leaving in a trip and ordered up one of these.Suffice to say I love it!PROS:Faster than the G11 [Lens (2.8) / Focus / Shutter]Superior lower light capability - Compared to the G11 that stretches the capability too far - the G15 is really impressive.ComplicatedSlightly better flash or at least sensor sensitivityCONS:No back LCD screen. I used it a lot on my G11 to take 'perspective' shots without have to kneel or lay down etc.ComplicatedThe flash is manually activated / opened - sometimes you forget!The one feature I would always like to have is a quick "fill flash" option - even in "Auto" mode - so many times I have to rotate to my "Program" feature where I have it pre-set up fill flash.All in all an unbelievable camera in the Sub $500 range.If you have a G11/G12 its worth the upgrade!!!

I'm a Canon DSLR fan (have a 5D and new very compact and promising Rebel SL1), photography enthusiast and computer systems/networking expert by trade. The PowerShot N is a disappointment for me. It doesn't take very good pictures. Many out of focus or blurred no matter what settings I use. I also find the WiFi capability a pain in the neck to use. I put the camera away in a drawer and will probably sell it on eBay.

I've been taking pictures for a long time, using a variety of 35mm film cameras, then digital ones. I've always had a selection of lenses, filters and other gear. I'd go out on a morning walk or an evening photoshoot and take it all with me.

Lately, though, I've begun to travel extensively and frankly, carrying it all around all day takes its toll. So, I started looking for an all-in-one camera. However, I had some must-have requirements.
1. It must shoot in RAW mode.
2. It must be able to do auto exposure bracketing
3. It must have a big focal range, starting with moderate wide angle and moving to a decent optical zoom.
4. It needs to be small, light and portable.
5. It must have Image Stabilization (Canon's name) or equivalent.

I looked at a lot of cameras. I checked out some pancake lens cameras like the Olympus and some really tiny ones like Canon's famous G-series.

I wound up with an SX1 IS. Although it is slightly larger than I had hoped, it meets all of my requirements.
I've used it for about 3 weeks now, including taking it on a business trip to the Netherlands. I really do like it, though there are a few minor issues.

Things I like:
1. It is small enough to fit into my briefcase
2. It is light enough to carry all day
3. The LCD swings away from the body and rotates, so I can hold it down low or above my head and see what I'm shooting without needing a right-angle view finder.

It has some surprise features like wide-HD format and video. I'm not sure I'll ever use them but if I do want to experiment, the camera will cooperate. One really nice feature is auto-focus bracketing. This camera will take a series of pictures at slightly different focus points. Photoshop will merge them. I don't usually work in macro mode, but I did experiment with a flower and got three shots, auto-focusing on the front-middle and back then merged them together quite easily. UPDATE: I just got back from a vacation that included a float-on-the-river event. Many of my shots autofocused on the foliage, not the animal hiding within it. I changed to AF Bracketing mode and was delighted with the results. In almost every case, one of the three was targeted on the item of interest. I would have missed several of the trip's best without that feature.

There were a few things that took a bit of getting used to. Most digital SLRs have a crop factor of about 1.3 or even 1.5 to one, so a 35mm lens looks like a 50. Given that I carried a large range zoom (28-300) I usually didn't know exactly what focal length I had used when I framed a shot the way I wanted it, so when I saw it in Lightroom at, say, 200, that seemed right. This camera has a crop factor of about 6:1. At 8mm (which would imply fish-eye) there's no distortion at all because it looks like 35mm. The lens barrel does have marking that show actual vs effective, but I'm still finding it strange to see very low numbers in the EXIF while looking at images that clearly have much longer lens appearances.

Coming from a mid-range camera body, I'm used to a continuous shooting mode that's pretty quick. This camera is noticeably slower, so some shooting techniques had to change. Here's an example of what I mean. I took a canal boat cruise in Amsterdam. There was a spot where I knew the boat would pass an intersecting canal and I wanted a right-angle that was taken on the centerline of the intersecting canal. Normally, I'd set the camera to burst mode and take 6-8 shots over two seconds and one of them would be just about perfect. This camera is much slower. I had to anticipate the motion and then hit the shutter, then wait for it to focus and shoot. I didn't even come close. Perhaps after taking a few thousand more images I'll have better instinct for the timing, but I suspect that this kind of shot is not one I should plan to get very often.
Another bit is that the menus are quite deep. They scroll on and on, so getting to a particular feature isn't quick. Fortunately, I'm one to pretty much pick a setting and stick with it, so that isn't a problem for me, but it might be for others.

Since the lens is built in, it doesn't have a manual focus ring. Similarly, the controls for changing shutter speed or aperture are on the back of the camera (a rotating ring) rather than on the lens or a wheel near the shutter as on my other camera body. Again, this is something to get used to, not a particularly big problem. A more negative version of this problem is that there are no threads for a polarizer or protective UV filter. I do have a split density filter that I can and do hold up in front of the lens, but sometimes the situation calls for a polarizer or ND4 and I just have to do without it.

However, there are two things I particularly don't like, and they're related. This camera eats batteries.(4-AAs)
A fully charged set is good for about 1

Got my camera just before a fantastic weekend away in the tropics, so it got quite a workout. The photos are fabulous. A professional photographer friend was really impressed with it too. Compact but sturdy. Still learning to 'drive it', but think this will get a lot of use. Have a Canon SX50 as well, so have it all covered.

I've had this camera for about 10 years now. It has always given me great shots of the distant mountains and the super closeups of birds and flowers. The only focus problems have been when I didn't take the time to set it or when my dogs go flying by with a ball. Hummingbirds are not too easy to capture but I've had some great shots of swallows on the wing and feeding the babies. I like that it is so easy to use even for a technology challenged granny.

I got this right before a vacation. It takes great pictures and is really easy to use, I didn't need to spend much time reading the manual or practicing which was great because I didn't have time to do so. Four stars because it doesn't come with the cable necessary to transfer pictures to my computer, and for a small camera, the strap is ridiculously large. Also, the battery meter drops from almost full to empty very quickly. It read as full for a few days and then suddenly went from full to empty in a few hours (an no, I did not accidently just leave it on when this happened). So charge regularly or risk getting caught with a dead battery.
