Lots of manual control, flash is a bit weak, a off-camera flash port
would have been nice. Hey, for $109- who cares? Very good image quality,
flesh tones go a little pink, but all Canons have had that and easily
fixed in photoshop. Short video clips are a plus, too. Best buy sells
these for $50 more than Amazon, get a brain and stop buying in brick
and mortar stores. Unless you don't need money. If that be the case,
send it to me, LOL
Overall this Camera is good.
It got its first outing in the Amazon and has produced some fine pictures. But not all have been good. As with any new camera, it takes some getting used to the menu setup and the facilities.
I really like the metal case, AA batteries, swivel screen and built-in lens cover.
Less good is the flash position (I keep putting my finger over it), the button layout and the flimsy battery/card cover.
Given that I was unfamiliar with the camera, I like the easily adjustable settings for aperture and shutter speed which I was able to use quite easily. Manual focus was less easy to use but was necessary rather a lot because of autofocus difficulties in low light.
In fact, the main problem I had was with images being out of focus in all conditions. Not all were out of focus, but some. I found the camera failing to focus in good light over distance (across a lake) and at night over any distance. Sometimes it would focus OK but once it decided it couldn't, nothing could persuade it otherwise and manual focus was the only answer.
The 10 megapixel images tend to look blurred on my 12" laptop screen but sharpen up with a bit of zoom. This is not a problem. Once sharp, they are good value for money with not much noise and good colour definition. I tend to keep the white balance on Cloudy rather than Auto during the day.
I also found that the angle of view through the LCD screen was significantly less than through the viewfinder and the images were accordingly cropped. Also, the 4x zoom is barely adequate.
It's a fairly good camera, the images that were good were excellent. It's a shame it's not more determined to take good shots in Program mode and that it seems to dislike indoor shots so much. In fully manual, it's a beauty.
brill for wifey so she leaves my canon sx10 IS alone
she points and shoots and the green button idiot mode works great (sorry luvvy)
much better than on my canon g3 (which was the bees knees) where i had to use manual settings
stick a 2 gig sd card in and it takes a thousand shots - she is still on the first charge of the nimh batteries... so you need a decent size card and rechargeables nimh - oh and a decent charger which goes into 10% trickle mode too otherwise you cook em
The only con is that the batteries get sucked up like you wouldn't believe. But I recently ordered the Canon ACK-800 AC Adapter, which should charge the camera to avoid that.
Overall, I'm VERY pleased with my purchase and I would recommend it to anyone!
We have had some problems with blurry pictures in certain situations, haven't figured out why yet...any suggestions anyone??? But overall we love our new Canon!
Pros: Zoom range, clear screens, image stabilization, two zoom speeds, tilt and swivel screen, manual controls, etc.
Cons: The eyepiece is a bit uncomfortable, it could use some extra padding.
Great camera for anyone who wants to learn photography with a lot of the controls of a DSLR, but the ease of use of a point and shoot.
FIRST OFF THE BODY IS VERY CHEAP PLASTIC. SO MUCH THAT I'M AFRAID TO CHANGE THE BATTERY, SINCE IT FEELS LIKE THE MISALIGNED DOOR IS GONNA FALL RIGHT OFF. IT WON'T HOLD YOUR SETTINGS. THE ZOOM IS SLOW AND GETS SHUTTERY AND STICKS WHEN YOU TRY TO ZOOM BACK OUT. THE PICS ARE DECENT, THOUGH NOT 8MEG QUALITY. THEY SAY YOU CAN PULL OFF THE LENS,BUT THE THING WON'T BUDGE, AND REMEMBER THE PLASTIC! OVER ALL, VERY DISAPPOINTED, EVEN FOR THE MONEY!!!
The battery cover will not open after batteries are installed.
I returned the replacement and will not consider ordering it again.
I am a Canon Fan of many years, owning 7 without any problems. But this one (sx110) is a lemon.
Another neat feature of the TX1 is the camera's ability to choose an appropriate ISO speed to minimize blurring. Of course, as always, the faster speed you use, the more noise you get, but there's a fine line between whether blurring/noise is preferable, and the camera (feature activated by pushing the "print" button while shutter is half-way depressed, so yes, may require two hands) is pretty good at making a decision when it comes to this trade-off.
Some people have said that the shape and position of the controls on the TX1 make the camera difficult to operate, and I admit that it took a few days to get used to the vertical design. Although it's possible to use the camera one-handed if you're just taking simple point-and-click photos, as with most camera models, making adjustments requires two hands. The viewscreen is visible even in bright sunlight (unlike the S60), so I haven't bemoaned the lack of of a viewfinder.
Bottom line: a solid camera for its size; recommended for people who mainly take still images but still like to take videos from time to time; enough manual controls for people who do mostly point-and-click photography or who only start making adjustments when not satisfied with what the camera's software chooses. This is not a replacement for a high-powered SRL camera or a normal-sized video camera. But, I have been happy with it and will continue using it for several years....
(Note, I was a little worried about the swivel screen's durability, but I've had the camera for several months and haven't noticed any degradation in way it moves--i.e. getting looser or getting stuck.)
