We have 3 young girls so we have gone through many cameras. We didn't want to spend a lot (since we'll probably need another one by next year), and we wanted something easy to use. So far, we love this camera! It doesn't go from one pic to the next as fast as we'd like, but the quality is as good as that of other cameras for far less the price. This was the least expensive camera we've ever bought and it takes the best pictures (technology has come far). We'd definitely recommend this one!

I don't know why people complain about low light performance. Professionals always have lots of light for video or movies - there isn't really any equipment out there that does a lot more in low light.

I took some test photos and video in a bedroom poorly lit by a desk lamp - the TX1 could shoot what I could see. It was really very dark. TX1 did better than other digital and film cameras I have used.

I have shot a lot of 35mm with ISO800 film indoors at night using fast lenses. TX1 with image stabilization can capture more quality images than I could before with a heavy camera and monopod. Maybe there are other cameras with better low light performance, but I still think the TX1 does an amazing job of low light work. It does have some trouble focussing in low light - which is not what dpreview said. (I am still working on figuring out the conditions in which the focus has problems.)

Infrared nightshot would be nice, as I have it on a mini-DV video camera, but practically its uses are limited.

Very few cameras will do macro to 0cm (16x12 field of view), without special macro lenses. Super macro with optical image stabilisation is amazing.

Finally..........A product that lives up to it's ad hype. What a pleasure to use, it's as easy as you want it to be, but at the same time it gives quite an array of choices to let you use your photographic skills to create professional type B/W photos,sharp night photos,stop action photos and many other program/manual features. I think for the $$$ spent on this camera, it is a great deal.

Simple controls/ decent picture quality. Batteries seam to last a while in it. I wish I would have gotten one w/ a better zoom, but for the money cannot complain. Good design, easy to hold in different angles while snapping photos/ The face recognition works pretty well & is fun to use.

bought this as a second, smaller camera for my husband to drag along on his different outings and pix of his construction work. He is limited technically, so this is a great choice for him. It also has the macro for his close-ups, and a little zoom so he can compose better pix. I'm also promoting the new ENELOOP batteries for all things digital/battery powered. MAJOR difference in charge length.

I looked at three different digital cameras thoroughly, and this is the one I eventually chose. I'm glad I did. It takes very good pictures, and the settings are a lot of fun to mess with.

Pros:

color choice: For those of you without the money to buy Adobe Photoshop, this lets you pick a color and the picture only shows that color. It's really amazing, and a lot of fun to use for effects.

manual: it's got manual settings (along with some others) for those of us who know how to use them and want a little more out of a digital camera without buying an SLR.

Sturdy: In my opinion, it's a good camera; won't break easily. My dad dropped my first one onto concrete and the only thing that broke was the flash (yeah, that's pretty important, but if you keep the camera in a case, unlike I did, you'll be fine). I'm also not afraid to move the flip screen a lot; it doesn't feel like it will fall off.

7.1 MP: this is awesome. I can zoom in a ton on my computer, even if I can't with my camera. I get a ton of detail and can pick out what I want, even if it's really far away. I took some pictures of tigers at the zoo and I could zoom in so much I could see their fur. It was awesome.

Automatic settings: If, like me at first, you dont' know how to use all those crazy manual settings, there's a ton of other settings to pick from that you can use for pretty much anything. It makes it really easy for quick shots, no matter the conditions.

Cons:

No movement: If I try to take a picture of something moving fast, most of the time it's blurry on the auto settings. I have to go to manual settings, and if the lighting is crappy, don't even try it. The shorter you make the shutter speed, the less light gets in.

Focus: because it's digital, you can't focus on your own, and the camera just picks something it thinks is most important. There's tricks to get it to focus on what you want, but it's a little hard.

Weight: It's a little heavy, but it's worth it. It takes four AA batteries, but if you get rechargables, you're fine.

I haven't owned any other cameras, at least, this was my first digital, besides the family one, so I'm not as knowledgable as some others, but I've had it for quite a long time, so I've gotten used to it. It's a good camera, definitely worth the money!

I have bought this camera about a month ago. I have searched and read lots of reviews on this model. I did own Powershot S1IS for over 2 years and decided to sell and get smaller camera with similar features. I decided on Canon because my previous model (S1IS) was a great camera.

PowerShot SX100 IS is a very similar camera to S1 but is smaller and comes with macro mode that I found very useful. I took the camera to many trips already and I have taken lots of pictures. The camera takes good quality pictures similar to those I took with S1IS. I really love larger screen (2,5 inches versus 1,5 inch), macro mode, manually pop-up flash. i dislike long time of recharging the flash that might be annoying to people taking lots of pics indoors.

I really like this camera and I really recommend it to anybody who wants to take good quality pictures. However S1 IS is as good as this one but larger and with smaller screen.

Canon PowerShot A560 7.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom ( I think this is the one) I returned it as I didn't like it at all. It seems very cheaply made and had AA Batteries, which I also didn't like.

There are already great reviews out about Canon's A590is. I'd like to add that I bought this camera just before a 2-week trip to China. Well, it performed like a charm and I couldn't be more happy with my purchase, especially for such an affordable camera that has so many features. On the second day of my trip I was fumbling with the camera and dropped it from a height of 4 feet onto concrete. My heart was in my throat. Everyone stared. For the remainder of the trip the camera was just fine; not even a crack or scratch. I'm amazed. And because I had almost no time to look through the camera manual before I started taking photos, I'll add that this camera is very user-friendly and easy to figure out right out of the box. I especially like the image stabilization and video capture features. I was also pleasantly surprised by the long battery life. I took about 700 pictures on one set of batteries. Overall, a great camera.

This is a great little camera; I bought it for my husband to use for his hunting and fishing excursions. It makes great pictures and is very light weight. Definitely worth the price; my first digital camera was a 3.1 megapixel and cost three times as much. Canon makes the best camera.

I am the owner of a Canon A80 but thought I'd look at another Canon digital camera. Although the Canon A590IS had many of the features I was looking for in a digital camera of its size,I was rather disappointed with the results of the pictures I took with it. Colors were not as brilliant or faithful as I had expected. The pictures didn't have crisp, sharp images - and for these, I took outdoor as well as indoor photos using the different feature adjustments in the manual. Lastly, the camera itself seemed chinsy for me - too light that I felt like I was using a disposable camera.

I have needed a digital camera for sometime, I was a little intimidated and put off buying one forever. I looked this one up in Consumer Reports which gave it a good rating. It is user friendly, easy to use, be sure and get a new memory card though, the one that comes with the camera holds about 4 pictures.

A nice performing camera with a good zoom range. Could go a little wider, but the long end is great. Image quality is good.

If it were my primary camera, I would miss an optical viewfinder, but I'm mostly using this on a gigapan mount, and it does a nice job for that.

I purchased this camera with my summer trips in mind. I picked it mainly because of the price - I'm not a real camera junkie. I found that on the whole it operates very well. The only problem I have is that it tends to get blurry in action shots, or if you zoom in too close. I also found that my sister, who has a Nikon camera, has pictures that are sharper and have a better quality. For the price, though, you can't get a better camera.

I bought this product to take on a trip to Europe and I used the automatic feature almost exclusively. I was not pleased with the
quality of a large number of my photos. It was a big let down. I
had bought it to increase the number of megapixels over my old
camera and thought the quality would be even better than my old

We have a Canon Camera, but it's larger and heavier than the Powershot A470. I wanted something small that I could either put in my pocket or bag. This camera fits that description and more. It's easy to set, focus and shoot! The pictures are clear and sharp. Recently though, I downloaded pictures into a digital picture frame. I was disappointed that some of the pictures had dark background and were fuzzy, but I think that it was more fault of the picture frame than the camera. I'm returning the digital frame for a larger one. All-in-all, I love my new camera and highly recommend it for someone who just wants an easy-to-use and carry-around type of camera.

Great camera, takes beautiful pictures it has lots of features, 4X zoom (most compact and ultracompact cameras have a 3X zoom), for those who want to step away from the auto mode it has manual controls to take even better pictures, it may seem a little bulky for some, it is not certainly the kind of camera you would carry in your shirt pocket without it looking a little droopy, if you are looking for something really small try the SD1100 IS, but if you are looking for a great compact camera this is the one. Rememeber it runs on AA batteries,(you can buy AA in any drugstore when your on vacation), so it can't be as small as the ultra compact models that run on Li-ion battery packs.

I've emailed Canon about the absence of the string to the lens cap on this camera, and they said it wasn't incorporated because it would not work well with the lens hood featuring this model. Otherwise, it's a great mega zoom

i usually love canon cameras, but this camera i was not very happy with. i have no problem with the pictures coming out good. the color comes out very nice. the problem i have with it is the time that it takes to take one picture and then take another. if your batteries are not fully charged, the wait time to take another pic could be up to 10 seconds. the zoom can be blurry at times too. it's a good basic camera for someone who takes photos every now and then. but if it's for trips and you want to capture alot of moments, you're gonna miss out on alot by waiting for the batteries to charge up again to take the next pic...

I recently purchased this camera for my personal use for such activities as parties, friends and random pictures. Up to this day it has still impressed me and i would recommend it to anyone. Its use requires little knowledge of technology I mean practically anyone can use it. It has a great zoom and also its build in speaker is not surround sound quality but at least it has one and you can hear practically anything.

I always wondered why these underwater cases were so expensive...until I got mine in the mail. It is much more hi-tech than I expected. All of the functionality of the camera is accessible through this underwater case, which is something I didn't expect. It's easy to use underwater and is so superior to using disposable underwater cameras. I got the camera case for a trip to Puerto Rico and I have to say that I saw more in my digital images than I did while I was actually snorkeling; unlike my mask, the camera housing never fogged up. I wish I would have gotten this when I first got the camera.

Considering what I paid and what I expected, this was a fantastic camera. I've been playing with the settings, as well as using "auto", and have had some great pictures all around. I will probably end up getting a small portable tripod because I have a hard time holding my hands still, so I can't blame the camera. It fits nicely in my hands (a big plus for me), and is not something I'm going to readily lose (another big plus for me). I've posted 2 pictures I took with this little camera, and am extremely pleased with my camera, especially when I considering how little I paid compared to much fancier cameras within this range/style.

I was wondering which camera I wanted to receive for my birthday last September, and I decided on this camera because it was cheaper than most and 8mp. I fell in love with it.

My only complaint is that there should be some type of Sport mode, because there were some very blurry shots. I took almost all of my pictures on a moving band bus, it takes awhile to find the right mode to use... but I had a lot of memories and if I had my previous camera the pictures would have been very bad and almost every picture I have taken with this camera has been in high quality.

I love the fact that you can move the LCD screen around, all of my friends were amazed with it, and when you are in review you can rotate the picture. I thought it is cool that you can buy an underwater case with it too.

Also, I highly recommend buying a 2GB+ memory card so you don't have to constantly change the memory card. And rechargeable batteries, it takes 4AAs and over time you will probably pay more for batteries than the camera itself. The Canon recharageables (not sure what they are called) lasted me an 8-hour bus ride from Virginia to New Jersey there and back, trust me, they are worth the money.

I love photography and anyone looking for an almost professional camera at a fair price should look into buying this camera.

I love this camera! Bought it back in May to take on vacation, now it NEVER leaves my side! I recommend you use lithium ion batteries & a 2GB memory card. I shot over 2000 pics on my first set of batteries on highest quality setting! One of my best purchases! Buy it. You won't regret it.

amazing little camera. Most imortant is ,it is easy to have around most of the time. My nikon d40x is super but often at home when I'm not. I leave this or my much smaller nikon coolpix in my briefcase 100% of the time.
very clear pix. My only complaint is not specific to this model, but I really do not like cameras without viewfinders cause they are difficult to hold still. Putting a camera to your face is very stabilizing. Holding it out to see the LCD is very unsteady, no wonder they all need stabilization.
This camera does as good a job as any for its purpose, top end point and shoot for movies as well as stills, and including high def,well 720 hi def. note I believe it works out to 15 min per gig of HD?
good batt life, lots and lots of features, if ur flying to australia u might just finish the manual!

I bought this camera for my wife because she wanted one that she could easily carry in her purse. So far, she has found it very easy to use and the pictures have turned out very well. I personally don't like using the LCD screen as much as I like the viewfinder on my more traditional Fuji camera, but she prefers the LCD anyway.

It isn't loaded with options and there are certainly better cameras out there. For the price though, this is a great unit so far.

I have owned another Canon powershot. I researched other cameras but Canon has nice point and shoot cameras. Screen is nice size and pictures come out very clear and crisp. I was able to use it right out of the box. If you cannot afford the SLR cameras, this is a nice one for anyone.

first of all this is a great camera. in addition its a sweet camcorder as well. i took so many crisp videos it was ridiculous. the pic quality is great and the zoom is by far the strongest you'll find in a typical camera. definately buy if you want a good camera but are not sure of the technology. It has all the features and the pic quality.

I can't really say enough about this camera. Although not a professional by any means, I do know my way around a camera, and other than fancy lenses there's not much more you could possibly need or want. My favorite functions are the Macro setting and the Aperture-priority. I like that shallow depth-of-field look with the background all fuzzed out, and this camera has a minimum aperture of 2.8, which is wonderful for achieving that look. The camera is also small and easy to carry around in a purse. Also? I LOVE that it takes regular AA batteries. I bought some rechargables and they last forever. I take photos almost every day and I only have to charge my batteries once every few months.

Seriously great camera and easy to use. It's probably more camera than a beginner would want (or someone completely not interested in photography), but if you're looking for a really nice camera and don't have the money for a DSLR this is a GREAT camera for you.

The 590 has plenty of glowing reviews; this is just one more. Although I haven't had mine long, I find it very compact, user friendly and, of course, it takes great pictures. It is almost as capable and is considerably smaller than my Powershot 620. Highly recommended.

Easy to use, takes wonderful pics! Also durable...my husband let my 6 year old take a picture (came out great, by the way!) and dropped the camera on the sidewalk! I had the camera 4 days, tops! It got a little nic on the corner, but no other damage. Highly recommend this camera!!!

This inexpensive camera does everything well including movies. I bought one from Amazon for my 7 yr old and he has become the family photographer.
It burns through batteries at a phenomenal rate however and I will be buying the rechargable batteries that are available for the camera.
