I am a loyal Canon customer and the A630 hasn't disappointed me.
Again, this is my first digital camera so it has been a little tricky learning how all the features work but it's definitely fun to figure it out. The manuals it comes with are pretty much no help at all (thanks canon!).
The battery life is actually better than i thought. It came with a 16MB memory card so i had to upgrade that. i dont have any problem transferring the pictures to my computer.the body is nice and easy to hold for any size hand. I picked a great camera for the money i paid ($257 on amazon) and its fun to use and to experiment with all the features and shooting modes.
just realize that not every camera has everything (i wish this one had image stabilizaiton and a better flash), but for the price, you make out like a bandit! happy shooting:)
In my own evaluation of the camera, I find it remarkably well made and capable of producing surprisingly high quality images. If you're wondering about purchasing a more expensive model with higher megapixel numbers, I'd say save your money. For all around use---family pics, snapshots, etc.---the 5 MP of this camera is more than adequate for 5x7 prints. In fact, it does something my Nikon D80 can't: you can use the display screen to frame shots as well as the viewfinder. An advantage I noticed during a family get together was that 3 of us had these Canons; so if you have trouble figuring out how to use it (unlikely), you'll probably find a relative who can show you how!
My one criticism of this camera---and it's a commentary on many miniaturized electronic devices these days---is its unnecessarily small size. Sure, it makes this camera pocketable, but for large hands it is a bit of a challenge to use. More importantly, the size limits the number of batteries to 2. For a negligible increase in size Canon could have made a camera that uses 4 AA batteries and a shot-to-battery-charge ratio that would be far more practical. Watch how fast you go through a pair of batteries and see if you agree. I'm withholding a star due to the above and also because I noticed the camera advertised locally for much less than I paid on Amazon (obviously not a criticism of the camera, but of Amazon).
Highly recommended.
The drawbacks are typical for cameras of all the cameras of this price range, regardless brand name. (I have used Nikons and Olympus versions of the same.) The big screen on the Canon is real nice, but not bigger than other brands' version of the same camera.
The drawbacks are simple:
1) The flash has a narrow range of effectivness indoors. Too close, you wash out. More than 5 feet away? Too dark. You practically have to be an expert in Photoshop to be able to use indoor photos taken in medium dark to dark conditions.
2) Delay. If you want to take action photos with the flash, forget it. There is a 1-2 second delay (depending on battery power). Again, you can't get around this with other brands. It is pretty much the same for all brands at this price range. This doesn't mean i don't recommend this camera, just to realize its limitations and work with and around them.
3) Battery drain. The flash and screen suck out battery power faster than you can say "cheese." BUY RECHARGEABLES NOW. Otherwise you will be wasting a large amount in double A's.
If you are mostly taking photos in well-lit outdoors type situations, these types of cameras are great. You probably will be frustrated if you want to do more than occasional photos indoors, but again, this doesn't have to do with Canon or any particular brand. If you want better you will have to spend more.
This arrived promptly in excellent new condition. The camera is automatic in every way and serves as a great, economical camera for a photographer that wants to shoot and go! So many people, when they view my slideshows or photos, ask what kind of camera I use; the quality is exceptional.
I really enjoy learning and using all the functions on my cameras and home electronics but this one may take me a while. You can make adjustments in the functions of this camera very similar to how you would in a regular 35mm camera! Which would be really great if I remembered ANY of my high school photography class lectures.. sadly - I don't. It feels like it is something that could take years to really get genuinely familiar with which will be a fun process in itself.
I am planning a trip to Italy and I wanted to get a digital camera (my first one) in plenty of time to have a couple of months to learn how to use it properly.. WOW, I may have to postpone my trip! :-)
The software that comes with it is SUPER easy to navigate, incredibly easy to install and downloading pix from the camera is a snap-snap-snap!
I also picked up the 1 GB memory card, the 2 year warranty, and thanks to so many reviews talking about the short battery life I got a dozen AA batteries - so I am pretty well set! :-)
I can't wait to get buckled in, take her out and really open her up.:-)
A great little camera and a great value, 7 days into the experience anyway :-)
In that time I've learned what I do and don't like about digital cameras. My issue has always been balancing performance, features and value. The Canon Powershot A620 fit my needs perfectly.
Some of my requirements fulfilled by this camera:
* Great picture quality
* FAST: Startup, buffer, picture to picture, flash recharge, etc. My wife demands this even more than I do now that we've got kids).
* Takes AA batteries: My brother and I debate this all the time (he's always had the Canon S series cameras with the proprietary lithium battery). He says he likes how long his batteries last. I like using cheap, always available AA batteries... especially rechargeable ones.
* Sturdy: My wife would be using this camera with kids pulling on her all the time... the camera's going to eventually get some bumps / drops.
* Works with a program I found online called Cam4you remote: This program let me use my A620 as a VERY high resolution web cam. No need to buy a second web cam that would end up having crappy resolution.
* FAST... yeah, already mentioned this, but other than the Cyber-shot DSC-S600 this is the fastest camera I've owned.
* Battery Life: Very competitive and beats most other camera's I've had.
Only complaints about this camera are:
* A little bigger than we would have liked, but other features outweigh this con.
* Wish it only needed 2 AA batteries instead of 4. This would have made the body smaller, but I'm guessing I would have to give up on speed / length of battery life.
I took a couple of shots yesterday of my daughter and while it doesn't have the clarity of a DSLR (obviously) I got some very nice shots with really nice, sharp eyes.
My only gripe so far is that I wish it had a viewfinder. That may not be an issue if you're used to P&S cameras without one but I find myself putting the camera up to my face like I do my 30D.
We normally don't do that much shopping on-line; this transaction went very well.
Satisfaction score = 10. Complaint score = 0.
Thanks.

I wanted a lighter camera to take fun shots with but even my fun shots like the llama show I went to.. are pretty much useless. I'm going to be getting rid of this camera. I've taken hundreds of pictures on it and it's just making me madder every time.
I consider it a huge advantage that the A540 uses 2 AA batteries. I have several sets of rechargeables and I can get a lot of pictures from each set. Also, a big advantage of AAs over specialty batteries is that if you are on a trip or have an emergency and need batteries fast, you can purchase AAs almost anywhere in the world.
One other thing I have always appreciated about my Canon is never having trouble downloading the pictures. I can connect my camera to any computer running XP and my camera has always been detected. This has not been true of other brands of digital cameras at the place where I work.
I also purchased a 2 gig SD memory card. This is the maximum size card that you can use with the A540. I did not get the most expensive, high speed card and so far I have not noticed any problems.
Finally, I chose this camera because it will take pictures in total, mindless "AUTO" mode or you can take complete control of all settings. It allows for aperture and shutter speed control and even manual focus. Very cool.
You must read the advance user manual guide to get the best of it.
I also recomend getting the Canon compact camera case, fits like a glove and feels protective.
Cons:Memory card with the package only 16MB(I got a ScanDisk 2GB card from Amazon, very good) and the On/Off button is too close and same side as the shutter that you might accidentaly turn off the camera when taking a picture in a hurry.
Other: If you use recargable batteries buy the ones with the highest mAh like NIMH 2500mAh and a worldwide charger (Sony has them)
One thing I would add, the batteries - always use energizer lithium ones. They last around 20 times longer than anything else I have put in a camera. Rechargeables are a waste of time as are standard batteries, they don't last to long. The energizers are quite expensive but well worth the money.
The screen rotates out making it easy to take shots at odd angles - or even take a pic of yourself.
It has an auto setting for us amateurs and more sophisticated settings for the more professional.
The video facility with sound is very useful and great quality.
The only problem I found witn this is the location of the memory card slot - it's in with the batteries, so every time you want to change the card, the batteries fall out. I have the A620 at home and the slot is on the side - much more user friendly.
A lot of research later, I found the Canon A630. I like the large LCD screen and what was even better was the fact that it would fold shut, or rotate so that even I could get into a shot once in a while. Even better than that is the picture quality... I have a picture of a plane towing a glider, and when enlarged you can actually see the tow line.
The reason I gave it four stars is this camera doesn't have the rechargable battery pack that I liked so well with the Nikon. Also, the memory card slot is in the same door as the four AA-batteries and I usually end up spilling my batteries when getting the card out. Not really a big deal now after owning this camera awhile... but I would have preferred somewhere else.
The viewfinder is very nice, the zoom surprisenly good, the video and sound quality also better than I would have thought (and I own a video business). Do consider that the card that comes with it held five photos at most, but we found a 2 gig card at a warehouse club for less than $30. The flash doesn't always go off, but it appears that the photos without flash didn't need the flash. Very simple to use. A friend also likes the hand grip.
It's not light and wouldn't fit in your pocket, but we found that it easily fit into a standard camera case that fits on a belt. Very easy to transfer to the computer. Again, it's only been used a few times, so we have not played with photo quality or printing photos, but so far I would definately recommend the A630 for the money.
I highly recommend this camera!!!
To the rear a 2.5in LCD panel flips out and pivots to allow shooting from all manner of angles. You can easily shoot over the heads of crowds or frame waist-level shots. Or flip the LCD right round to take a picture of yourself!
Shots taken with the A640 may be compared not only with the very best compact cameras but also with digital SLRs. The quality is excellent. Images are extremely clean and crisp - definitely photographs as opposed to snaps.
You can buy extra lenses and even an underwater casing! I'd also recommend buying a light weight tripod for use in low-light and night time conditions, a good case and a good battery charger as the A640 takes 4 AA batteries. With a 2 gig memory stick you can take about 500 shots at superfine 3648x2736 resolution. The detail on shots at that resolution is amazing.
To sum up: the A640 is easy to use, powerful and takes great photographs.
Cons: 1. Eats batteries like nobody's business - I put the included batteries in, took about 12 shots using the flash and within 30 minutes the LCD flashed the weak battery symbol. 2. Shutter lag - powers on quickly enough, but speed between shots is somewhat gimpy.
Other Thoughts: I had an old Sony Maverica with the floppy disk for storage. This is my first REAL digital camera. There are a LOT of adjustable settings, both manual and automatic, that I have yet to play with completely. So far, I'm VERY impressed with this camera and the price has come down quite a bit recently. Get yourself some rechargeable batteries.
The camera takes some good pix even when on automatic settings. I've found the swivel screen to be a huge plus and I use it all the time. I'm pretty tech savy, but think most folks can figure out the advanced features on this camera.
And to top it off, the batteries last ten times longer in this camera than my old Fuji.
Its not the smallest camera out there, but if you don't need to slip it in your pocket, this one's a winner.
The powershot A630 uses the AA batteries which #1 let me use rechargable batteries that I keep on hand yet in a pinch I can always buy new batteries, and #2 gives the camera extra weight. I appreciate the heft of this camera. I find I have fewer blurry pictures due to hand-shake. the Elph was so light that I tended to move the camera as I took the picture.
but here's the part that just flat out sold me on the A630. the swivel screen. as a family, we often take group shots of ourselves - using the timer feature. As we set ourselves up for the photo, we can swing the screen around so we can frame ourselves as the camera is counting down. (I also purchased a tiny flexible tripod which helps with the framing too). When we're not taking pix, I just turn the screen around to help protect it! knock on wood, I haven't broken it yet!
At the highest quality setting, I can only get a few pictures on the memory card, but with 8 mega pixels, even the lower settings give great quality photos.
I have not explored all options/functions/features on the camera, but overall, I love it.
