'Nuff said.
It also started to drain the batteries at an alarming rate.
I replaced it with the A590IS, which is the new version of the A570IS.
Buttons and controls are identical, except it's in black instead of silver.
However, the A590IS takes much sharper, clearer pictures, and the macro mode works much better; no more blurry close ups like the A570IS.
Shot time using the flash is also dramatically improved over the A570IS.
I just hope this one lasts more than a year.
BUT, I just couldn't get away from the rediculous delay between shots and the rediculous delay after pressing the shutter button. I did some testing and it avaraged 5-6 seconds between photos. It averaged 3-4 seconds from the time I pressed the shutter button until it took the photo.
8-10 seconds per photo is just too much when you have kids!
I hate to say it, but I'm happier with the Canon a590 than with my Panasonic TZ5. I particularly like the manual controls on the Canon, and the possibility to set the flash strength. It looks like I'll use the Canon as my primary camera, and keep the Panasonic TZ5 as a backup in case I damage or lose the Canon.
I bought the Canon a590 for $119 on-line from Best Buy, and it included a 2 GB SD memory card. I bought Radio Shack's NiMH rechargable AA batteries, which are the best rechargable batteries I've ever used.
I highly recommend the Canon a590.
The only thing i am disappointed at is that we cannot use canon re-chargeable batteries in this. But a AA battery recharger would definitely solve the issue.
I ordered it from Amazon on thanksgiving and it arrived on the estimated delivery date. I am very pleased with Amazons delivery schedules.
Overall, I am satisfied with this camera and would recommend it for anyone looking for a branded camera, with good features, at a reasonable price.
A520, A530, A540 and A550 and I am happy with all these cameras and here are the reasons why.
1. Value for Money, I bought all these under $200.
2. 4x Optical zoom is a plus and sufficient for a point and shoot camera.
3. Delivers fairly good quality pictures. I have printed poster size pictures and have been very happy with the results.
4. All these have better manual controls than most of the ELP series point and shoots canon has made.
Cons:
one thing to keep in mind is that these cameras are point and shoot and the lower end models that canon has made, so anyone buying these should not have high expectations with these cameras.
1. Delay between two shots when flash used. Again this is marginal and I really do not think of this as a major -ve point, at least not for the money spent on these.
2. The ELPHs have made them look bulkier :) again not a biggie. The ELPHs are really compact. So even though these are not as big, they look big in front of elphs.
I would not recommend A550 to anyone only because they are old models, not because they are not good. Instead I would recommend the latest A series models that Canon has come out with. A720 IS, A570IS, A590IS. These are all great cameras with Image Stabilization built into them.
It is too big and bulky and not really pocket-size. If I wanted a camera this big it should be a lot better quality. My old camera is MUCH smaller.
The lag time between photos reminds me of distant decades of the 20th century.
The photos aren't so hot, which is a major bummer since I got the camera to take great pix of my granddaughter's birthday party.
In one evening I burned through four batteries and I didn't even take that many pix since the camera was a pain to use.
I'm going to return it since I personally consider the thing a pink nightmare.
My only complaint is how long it takes to "save" the picture before I can take another one. Other than that, no complaints.
I was looking for a camera that had great overall build quality, a usable optical viewfinder, took SD cards (I had a bunch due to my own camera), opened up pretty wide to catch low-light photos, had a reasonable zoom so he could take a variety of shots, was small enough for his hands, light enough for him to carry all day, and enough controls to keep his appetite for the technical side of things sated. This camera was the only one to hit the mark on all specifications.
As an aside, I'm likely going to buy him the Opteka wide angle and telephoto adapter lenses. The zoom on this camera is decent, but he's straining against the limit.
Highly recommended.
takes great pictures, this camera is for you.
I don't have the time or patience to sit down
and figure out 101 modes of operation. All
I want from a camera is a good picture with
minimal effort. This camera does everything
I need it to without having to obtain a photographers
knowledge base. It also makes a pretty nifty movie
with sound.
First, this camera does not have an electronic viewfinder. This will only affect you if you like to look through the viewfinder when taking photos instead of at the LCD. If you do, then the pictures will be slightly off center, as the viewfinder is set above the lens and the difference between the views from the two is not corrected electronically. At least I think that's the problem. I just know they're off center.
Secondly, I found that shots taken on Auto came out overexposed--too much light. I've taken to using the Manual setting for virtually every photo I take. By doing that, you can control things like the shutter speed and get shots that are better exposed. It's kind of a pain, especially if you don't want to deal with the technical aspects of photography, but I'm ok with it because it's forced me to be a better photographer in some ways.
Really, most of the problems mentioned in the reviews I've read can be fixed by using the manual controls. You can control the amount of flash emitted from the camera and you can set the shutter speed and ISO to make low light shots a little easier. Also, if you set the camera on something steady and do the two second delay (self-timer function), press the button, and don't touch the camera, it will come out very clear. If you have nowhere to set the camera, I've found success by taking continuous shots. Put it on the continuous mode or whatever it's called, and hold the button down, and it will snap for ages. Then scroll through and pick the least blurry shot out of all of them. It worked quite well for me.
Some good things... It's very good with macro shots and really picks up color quite well. You can boost the color by using the vivid color setting. Kind of nice for some shots. And the flip screen is true genius. Great for aiming those self-portraits, shots from above, and even balancing the camera somewhere if you get desperate. :) I'm also very happy with the way the pictures look when they're printed out. The mega-pixel amount is more than good enough for any amateur use.
All in all, I've been happy with this camera. It takes some getting used to, but if you're willing to work with it, it produces quality results. As you might have gathered though, it may not be the camera for the person who doesn't want to deal with manual settings and the like. It is possible that I'm just really picky, but I think it does under-perform if left to its own devices.
This canon is a delight to use and the results are spot on, both with and without flash even my jet black cat looks great. The white balance always seems accurate and so far, have only had to tweak it once in Photoshop. Using the viewfinder is a great boon when shooting rapid exposures as you don't have to wait for the screen to refresh. The battery life is good 120 to 150 pics with the screen on and a lot more if not.
I can't fault this camera
-The optical zoom is really great for a camera of this size and price
-The battery life is very good - I had initially thought that the battery comsumption would be too high, with only 2 batteries (my previous Canon used 4 batteries)
- Many other more that other reviewers have submitted
Con:
-The only one negative thing is that the optical zoom does not work during the video mode. Only the digital zoom works (which is rather useless). But for a camera of this price and size, I can understand.
Note: Buyers from outside of the USA to note. The warranty that comes with it only works in the USA and Canada. This did not matter to me as the one year warranty was not my priority, as Canon usually can last many years.
Was despatched quickly.
very pleased with quality of photos and with service.
It's a really good camera, but what's with the price jump? I didn't know that Amazon was into gouging.
As you will find in other reviews, the camera portion is average. What makes this camera stand out is the fact that it will do 1280 X 720, 30 frames PROGRESSIVE! This is simply amazing since this camera is no larger than a box of cigarettes. It is not perfect though. There are few manual controls, e.g. no shutter rate or ISO control, however you do have control over locking ASE and Focus, as well as white balance. Some reviewers have complained about ergonomics, but a small monopod or makeshift grip that attaches to the tripod mount will do the trick. I personally would have preferred a REC button in front of the camera. If I could also make a couple of wishes, I would also ask for an external 1/8" stereo external microphone connector, as well as LANC control that could be used for zoom, focus, record/pause and stop. Finally, low light levels are very noisy.
There are also concerns about battery power. I have been able to go an hour without a charge. Again, it is suggested to buy an extra battery. If you really need to have this camera running continuously, buy the external power adapter. If you need more remote power, buy one of those extra lithium ion external power packs that has an output of 3.5 volts and retrofit a coaxial plug to fit the external power adapter.
Some reviewers are complaining about Canon using the Motion JPEG file format for video. True it is not the best compression format for making small files, but the quality is better than most MPEG 4 or even MPEG 2 file formats. Plus, you get frame by frame editing. To make up for the poor compression, just buy a larger card.
There are also some questions if this camera can support more than a four gigabyte SD card. Yes, but it will need to be a fast SDHC card. This poses its own problems because it is not backwards compatible with SD card readers so you will not be able to use it with any card reader unless it specifically says it is compatible with SDHC. This is not too great of a problem since the camera uses a standard mini USB female connector and XP, Vista, OS X recognize it without additional software.
In my opinion, this has been my answer to a stealth high definition documentary camera. I will find many uses for this camera in the upcoming months. Look for my documentary "Gamer: The chronicles of Evanor" [...] to be released at the end of the year. It will contain footage from this camera.
I gave it a four out of five stars for not adding an external microphone adapter, LANC control, and a few more manual controls. This would have garnered a perfect score from me. I hope Canon is listening.
