1) Very slow, unresponsive wireless printing (win7)
2) Ink runs out very very quickly
3) Replacement ink costs
This printer is tetchy and unreliable. Its looks and feels cheap.
It's pics go into something called an 'Image Garden'.
Frankly that would be a sacking offence to have thought that one up if I was running the creative department.
Because once you've copied them in.. They seem to disappear. No list of pictures to consult. It's just aggravating.
Not like my trusty old sturdy Dell, which I seriously considered rummaging around in the rubbish tip for and trying mouth to screen in an attempt to bring it back after dealing with this flighty thing.
As for the constant messages saying 'no ink.' ....only a fool would argue with a machine. Unfortunately that was me - for buying it:
...'There is ink Canon. And plenty of it - Stop lying'.
And will it WI-fi print? Maybe if there is an R in the month. It's that temperamental.
I've seriously gone off Canon as a result and if any manufacturer can offer me a simple, simple, simple SIMPLE thing that works ( no image garden mentions obviously ) ...did I mention 'simple'?.... I'd be happy to deposit my Canon into Printer Hell.
- Or the returns department as it's known.
The one star is for cheek.
Two major flaws - the first less important one is the display, just a simple LCD 8 which you have to interpret. No quality screen like you find on other printers in the price range. This is pretty weak.
The other very serious flaw that is one to avoid this like the plague is the ink costs. The cartridges last approximately 3 femto seconds and cost about eleventy billion pounds in comparison to rival printers. Generic versions are not readily available either.
Do not buy this printer. I wish I hadn't.
The printer is slow and noisy. Often it will print two pages and then inform me it is out of paper even if it is not. I've just spent half an hour removing a paper that got stuck inside of it. The printer didn't really feel like parting with the paper, so when I tried to remove it, the paper got torn into several smaller pieces. The printer enters sleep mode after some times without use, but if I then wish to send a print job over the wi-fi I need to manually turn the printer on first.
It's a lot of small issues that just really make me miss my old unstable printer.
But most of the time is spent trying to get the computer to see the printer on the network...both from my laptop and my desktop have issues & the procedure is to unplug the mains, plug back in, then it suddenly is OK. Sometimes the fault is that I have to walk over to the printer and hit the on button...why not wake on LAN activity??? My last lexmark did this...Also the Canon image garden pushes it's way onto your PC so you have to disable it at startup...I don't need yet another piece of bloatware slowing my boot times thanks.
The fact you have to be wearing your lucky pants and then if the printer is having a bad hair day you have to be plugging cables in and out and prodding round settings means it's totally useless for wife/kids to be able to rely on using it, so Dad has to act as a human print server.
Compare/contrast to my dull old samsung laser - it just works, day after day, just sits there boringly printing away, never getting in the way...Canon - Printers are important to you, but most of us just want to never have to think about them, we just want hardware that works and software that never gets in the way...
Only issue is it is fussy with paper and has few choices on its menu. Also insists in only printing on some papers if they are places in the single sheet feeder. Not good if you need several hand outs or brochures. I find that contrary to the instructions it works OK with almost any paper and certainly prints envelopes. However, manual duplexing is a bit of a pain, but is nevertheless handled well as it prints all the page 1s and then gets you to turn the stack for page 2. So just about OK for day to day work if you're not to busy and have patience, but wonderful printing even in monochrome with the right paper.
It was pretty cheap to buy, almost as cheap/expensive as the inks!
On the plus side, it gives a really good picture, good definition...which is the real criterion.
On the negative side, it is over-fussy with a pointless and juvenile add-on to create invitation cards, posters and the like. It places a large icon on the desktop which you can't remove! And it prints multi-pages in the reverse order (e.g page10 to page 1). And it has no more 'top feed' which used to be really handy when I was in a hurry and just wanted to bash in some more A4 paper as the printer continued to print. Now it has a 'bottom feeder tray' only.
it's OK.
I ordered it from Amazon, and it came within 4 days no problem. Got it out, set it up effortlessly. Used the necessary software to print onto discs and it performs beautifully. Images are pin sharp! Very impressed with the results.
Prints photos pretty quickly considering the quality of them. I'm one of these individuals that doesn't really want to risk buying 3rd party inks for the sake of saving cash. Which is why I'm glad these inks last a long time. I've printed 4 A4 photos. 12 DVD covers. 6 DVD's. 4 transfer paper images. 6 documents and the inks have barely moved. Magenta, Cyan and Yellow are 3/4 full. The blacks are still full to the brim! All this for just less than
This has now been superseded by a new tray system which only works 50% of the tine. The other 50% it gets stuck inside the machine. Much grinding of teeth getting it out.
Also takes ages to warm up getting ready to print and is noisy.
Can't understand why Canon replaced an excellent mechanism and formula with one that is simply awful.
Also trying to get 2 Macs to use the printer over a network has been a pain.
Would avoid buying this model - other Canons may be better
work just the same as originals but so much cheaper as I do a lot of printing this is great x
For the price of the item the print quality, with the bonus of Wireless utility (provided you have a suitable wireless router) is very good - no complaints.
It is quite frustrating the way it seems to endlessly chunter away (presumably purging the print heads) before printing anything and after printing. It seems to do it when just idling in stand-by; it appears to have a mind of its own, but for the price I can live with that.
I do a fair bit of CD/DVD printing and have always used Epson printers that have excellent software to run that utility.
I bought this item assuming that the CD/DVD print software supplied would be a `reasonable' standard given this printer is newly released and from a world renowned brand.
The printer comes with an archaic software package called `Canon My Image Garden' and the CD print utility is tucked away inside it. It's almost like Canon are embarrassed about the CD print utility; and well they might be. It is the most annoying, counter intuitive, inflexible, pathetic, and for me personally, totally useless piece of software I've seen for years.
After much digging with Canon drivers etc it transpired that an old cd/dvd print software driver (not supplied with this printer) will work with this newest printer. It was superseded by the 'My Image Garden' print CD/dvd software. (God knows why).
I downloaded the old cd/dvd print driver/package from their EUR website and it works just fine. Very similar to the Epson CD print software for those familiar.(see comment no.1 for more info)
The cd print utility within the supplied software package may be ok for many users but was too basic for my needs.
Notwithstanding the cd print 'confusion', it is a decent printer made all the more attractive by the price. Mind you, I have not tried to buy new ink cartridges yet.
All of the Epson and Lexmark printers I have owned always stopped production as soon as any colour of ink cartridge ran out - but the Canon lets you keep going - great if you mainly use black for documents, invoices etc. Brilliant idea!
As far as the wireless connection goes, my Epson set up itself pretty much in seconds but the Canon... well I struggled and gave up eventually resorting to the USB cable instead.
Another plus about the Canon is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a mid -level printer with a C.D tray.
I did hunt for the CD tray for a while but as most people do,I did not really pay attention to the paperwork that comes with it ( it's a printer for god's sake, who needs installation instructions??)and found the tray clipped in underneath the main paper tray. I use Printable white satin C.Ds and they reproduced well in all colours.
As a faithful Epson fan, I could be swayed to follow Canon if this printer lives as long as my old Epsons did and does not have the 'planned obsolescence' built in to it as many printers(Epson in particular) of this price do.
Also it does seem thirsty on the inks.
I cant recommend this printer.
An installation CD for both Windows and OS X is supplied, but the OS X setup routine does nothing more than connect to Canon's website to download the required software, so you need a decent broadband connection; my connection is slow and cuts out, and as Canon's download routine can't pickup where it left off, I kept getting download error messages until I used a friend's decent internet connection to download the stuff I needed.
Other than that minor grip, I'm very pleased with the printer especially considering the price.
