Don't be fooled by the all-in-one name like I was. I bought it and then discovered it does not have FAX capability! All-in-one to me means that it does it all -- not 3-in-one or 2-in-one!!!!

I've had this Canon MP530 all in one system for about one year (bought it in Late January of 2007). It was used lightly (only printed about a dozen 5x7 pictures, internet documents, faxed a few dozen documents, and scanned maybe 50 pages). It performed reasonably well and the software was easy to use. However, the paper feeding mechanism recently started chewing up the paper fed in from the rear paper loader. There was no obvious cause that I could see that was fixable by the usual methods of fixing paper feeding problems. Switching to the bottom paper tray caused the whole machine to lock up and display a cryptic error message. None of the other functions (fax, scan, copy) would work in this mode. Looking up the error message on the internet gave us only vague clues such as cycling the power may help (it didn't help), and bring the system to a service center. Calls to Cannon revealed that the printer was out of warranty and that there was probably a memory problem. When we mentioned that the printer was having mechanical problems, the customer service person again insisted it was a memory problem and said that the memory is tied to the mechanical operation of the system (??? - I guess it is in some very indirect way...but that makes no sense whatsoever and the customer service representative probably had no idea but didn't want to admit that). We were told to call the local service center, and that service center told us that to "fix" the problem, we would have to first, pay $80 (more than half the cost of the printer) to have it taken apart and cleaned. Then if they could find the problem, it would cost additional money to fix that problem. This experience along with the fact that Canon is playing the bait and gouge game (along with most other inkjet manufacturers) by getting you to buy a cheap printer, then gouging you by supplying you with low volume and expensive ink cartridges, (and cheaply made printers)tells me that I should not buy Canon products anymore. In Summary, the all-in-one worked well for about a year, then crapped out and we'll basically have to buy a new multifunction system. Canon's customer service experience was appalling and it doesn't seem to be worth the time and hassle to deal with them.If you have questions, please feel free to contact me [...]

I didn't give it five stars because the user manual was online and difficult to navigate. The papers need to be placed face up to scan and fax and it's a little different from most. BUT....once you get the hang of it...it's a great little printer, easy to load paper.

My old HP 930 finally croaked after many years of dependable use. I had no idea what I was missing in the new all-in-ones, and no idea that low cost home printing/copying now rivaled photo finishers. I came across the reconditioned Canon MP810 for under $70(!!) from an online source, and figured I could take a risk. No risk here...it's a fantastic printer The MP810 prints stunning photos and crisp text fast, it scans documents and pictures beautifully, and even has a built-in back-lit 35mm slide scanning feature that scans at up to 4800 dpi. It's far better than a $150 special purpose slide converter I had. I'm sold on Canon, but like all inkjets, the ink cassetes are way too expensive.April 2012 Update - Three years and its been flawless.

What an amazing machine.Pros:Well built, 5 ink cartridges (change only what you need), AIO function, duplexing (2 side printing), 2 paper trays (can load different paper types on each tray) and color copy.Cons:It is not wireless or network-ready (but for this price, what did you expect?).Comments: Installation went very smooth in 3 laptops, never crashed. But it took about 15 minutes on each; I thought this to be a little too long. Specifically, I bought this machine because of the duplex function and it never disappointed me; I did not have any significant paper jams. I have also used the scanner and xerox function and I never found anything at fault. In summary: I am very satisfied and I expect it to last several more years.

I received this printer as a freebie when buying a laptop during the 2008 Black Friday sale. For the price, can not beat it. It replaces an older HP Deskjet 5550. The scanner works great and printing on paper is fast. I would not rely on this for photos. The technology today for photo printing is far superior than what this printer has available but then, this printer is not intended for that. If you are looking for a low cost multi-function printer, I would not hesitate.

This printer is terrible! The first one I bought showed an error message that was not only incorrect (it said there was a missing ink cartridge when all were properly installed) but could not be cleared. Canon had me send it to them and in return they sent me a refurbished unit. The refurbished unit does not scan properly. The scanner gets "stuck" after about 2/3 of the page and the unit must be turned off and turned back on to resume printing. The result is a copy (or scan) that is muddled and blurry on one side. The really terrible thing about the "new" unit is the noise it makes when the cartridges return to the original position after printing. It sound like the buzzing of a child's wind-up toy, only 100 times louder, and lasts 15 seconds. I cannot make a phone call or carry on a conversation while printing for this reason. The only good point: it did print well for about a week before breaking!

WARNING! Before you invest in this machine you need to be aware that this printer has a serious "ink low" problem. When any of the ink cartridges are getting low on ink, even if there is a lot of ink left, the printer stops printing Fax's automaticaly. Instead of printing your faxes as they arrive, it puts them into memory, which requires a multi-step procedure to retrieve and then delete from memory the FAX documents. Also be aware that you CANNOT refill these ink cartridges! Cannon has programed the small computer chip on each ink cartridge so that it decides when the ink is low. Even if you refill it, the chip still reports that ink is low! This causes all kinds of problems in printing, copying, faxing, etc. I haven't found any generic cartridges that work!!I would buy any other All-In-One Printer except Cannon. Believe me, I'm not saying this just to get back at Cannon. I'm trying to save others the grief and regret of investing in this machine. The only good thing is that the print quality is above average.By the way, if anyone is interested, my Cannon MP530 is for sale, cheap!

They are marketed to be mobile but they cannot survive the simplest trips. At this point (after 4 pritners in a year) it is cheaper to go back and use the business center at the hotel no matter what it costs. At least I don't have to carry a broken printer in my breifcase or luggage.

The Canon MP530 multifunction device works well.I have two minor complaints:.I had to download VISTA drivers from Canon's web site. Canon did include a flyer about Vista support, so it is unnecessary to call Canon..The paper feeders have some slack to them (rear and top), and therefore one needs to be somewhat careful inserting paper..The Canon MP530 is somewhat heavy and bulky. While I do not intended to use the fax function, it worked well. I had an adapter cable for my cell phone, and sent a few faxes. The copier works well. The printer works well. The bundled software is adequate, but there are many third party software products available, including several free products. The Canon MP530 does not use photo grade inks, but the resolution and clarity are very good.I was looking for an economical machine for ink usage. I found software to print black and white with an option to gray scale.I have not tested this device for wireless operation.

I bought this unit several months ago on sale for $150. It replaces two similar units including a HP 5505 and a Brother MFC3420c. This is more expensive than the other two, but it is well worth the difference. It is an excellent unit for home or a small office. ZDNET rates it a very respectable 7.7 out of 10. (Nothing they rate gets over an 8!) The main shortcomings are that it is not network-ready and it lacks media card slots. It does have a front port for connecting a digital camera. I have not connected the fax machine, but use it for a copier, scanner and printer, which I will discuss below:SCANNINGI have just scanned in four volumes of legal reference materials with about 2000 pages. Using PaperPort 11 and scanning to PDF, and using the automatic sheet feed, I was able to scan nearly four pages per minute. This is similar to the Brother and significantly faster than the HP. Scanning quality in black and white is very good. ZDNET's testing indicates it scanned color documents at 5.22ppm, and copied at a rate of 3.83ppm. Colors scan a bit on the light side, but not bad. The driver contains corrections which I have not played with.Canon says the sheet feeder on the scanner holds 30 pages. I was able to get it to handle more. The Brother had a tendency to crunch paper on input side. The HP's input tray holds only about 10 pages and output tray for the scanner was too shallow and it tended to crush paper as it fed out of the scanner. This has neither problem. The Canon comes with Presto PageManager, which is used to scan, store, organize and drop and drag imaged to other programs. I didn't play with it much, and quickly went back to the similar PaperPort 11, because PaperPort appears to work better with PDF files.COPYING:Black and white is excellent. Color copies are very good. Dark colors come out a bit on the light side, and the copies are a bit grainy, but not bad. When copying, you can reduce or enlarge the copy.PRINTING:Here, the unit shines. One of the nicest features is the duplex printing. I work for attorneys and sometimes have to print two sided forms, so this comes in handy. It also has a front loading paper cassette and a rear loading paper sheet feed which is good for feeding envelopes, photo and other specialty paper. Both hold about 75 sheets.ZDNET says "It printed text documents at a snappy 6.77 pages per minute, scanned black-and-white images at 5.64ppm." Even when printing "pleading paper," which has vertical lines from top to bottom, it has the same high printing speed. This is substantially faster than the HP or the Brother. In my opinion, black and white print quality is very good, with straight vertical lines being fairly straight with little wavyness. The letters do not bleed on regular copy paper. It isn't laser printer quality, but it is presentable. Color prints are a bit grainy, but look very good on glossy photo paper. The printer uses five print cartridges including three color and two black. One black is for color prints, the other for text. The text cartridge is larger.COST OF PRINTING:Ink cartridges cost about $15. Canon estimates the cost of ink at about 2 to 3 cents a page. This seems about right.CONCLUSION:This unit is better in every department than the other inexpensive multifunction printers I have owned. As a final thought, it looks really nice. It makes a nice addition to my home office.

This is a good AIO for the money and the category of printer thats its competing against. I had this for almost a month and it does a good job for what it does. I basically bought it for its printing and faxing out features which it does well. The copying and scanning features were a bonus. Too bad the screen is not backlit. Its hard to see since this is going into a computer armoire which is dark. The AIO came with a broken yellow cartridge which Amazon cs took care of. After about 2 weeks, I started getting the alarm feature going off saying that my Magenta cartridge was empty which of course was false. I checked and sure enough it was full. I took it out and wipe the chip and the alarm disappeared but eventually returned. I called Canon customer service and they replaced that one. This ordeal left me with doubts about this machine's quality control. I decided to just return the MP530. I knew I still liked Canon machines as all around great machines with great features. I decided to take another chance with another Canon and went with the Pixma MX850 for its great features.I thought about the MX700 but reading the reviews left me cold about some of the features being left out compared to the MP530, namely it has bigger ink droplets and 4 ink tanks vs 5(for less clearer printed pictures)and no auto duplex function. I also thought about the MP830 but for a few dollars more why not go with the latest model. Besides the MP830 did not have ethernet which I thought was good to have. Lucky I did because I just decided to do a wireless network for my home. All in all, I feel that the MP530 is a good AIO if you do not need the network feature. I heard the "empty" ink cartridge syndrome is prevalent on the Canon models so its hit or miss. Some have no problem while others have it. I will cross my fingers on the MX850 I just purchased. There are no AIO that does not have one or more things wrong with them. Its all what you can put up with, IMHO.

This printer worked fine for about a year. But every time it cleans the print head it dumps about 5 print pages worth of ink into an inaccessible receptacle in the chassis. So when the receptacle is full, one of the bottom rollers picks up the ink, painting a big black stripe on the back of each page. And after you use the bottom cleaning function, it immediately dumps more ink, filling it up again! This is deliberate, malicious built-in sabotage, forcing you to buy a new machine. A repair shop said it would cost more to take it apart and clean it than it would to replace it. Better idea: don't buy it in the first place.

I have used several multifunction machines before (all with fax function). All of them were HP until my last HP died after 2 years of minimum use (printing about 30 pages a week including faxes and scaning 5 pages a month). When I was researching for a new multifunction machine, one of my top criteria was cheaper consumables. After researching many multifunction machines with fax that range from $150 to $900, I found Canon MP530 and after using it for a month, I am very impressed. I was open to buying a color laser but it seems the technology for color laser all-in-one hasn't matured yet. The reason for considering laser was the problem I had about dried ink cartridges. For my minimum usage, a laser machine wouldn't have the problem of clogged cartridges.Printing is fast. The draft quality is better than my old HP. Quality in standard is very good and crisp. I rarely print brochure or pictures in-house, so I cannot comment on the highest printing quality on photo paper. For memos and basic color prints, it is excellent and the driver allows many special printing features that I didn't think of and have helped my productivity quite a bit. I saw a review complaining about the duplex printing, I haven't run into any problem with that so far.The best part I like about this printer is the ink tank. Each color has its own ink tank, so I do not need to throw away the whole color cartridge just because it runs out of 1 color. The print heads are separate from the ink tanks, so I am not paying for the ink head each time I replace a cartridge. This shows on the ink tanks price compare to HP's ink cartridges. The machine is well built and is not flimpsy like some of the HP's all-in-one in the similar price range. I like the tray opens automatically when it is printing, more a geek gadget and I love it. One complaint I have is the Sleep Mode, everytime a call comes in or when I use the phone that is attached to the machine, it comes out of sleep mode. I understand why it is doing that but I would prefer if the machine doesn't need to completely come out of sleep mode just to monitor the telephone line. At any case, it is better than my old HP which didn't even have sleep mode to conserve energy.HP manual wasn't great but it was clear to me about how to set up the fax machine to the configuration I want. The Canon manual is better but I was confused about the fax machine different configurations. Tech support was fast and knowledgeable to help me with this issue.Scanning isn't excellent compare to my dedicated scanner. However, it is not bad. I would say it is good in quality and for an all-in-one, I wasn't expecting it to be a professional grade Epson scanner. In terms of software, I never like to use the printer's software. However, I do like the scanning software (MPNavigator) although I use Photoshop to scan images. The MPNavigator is easy to use and my office found it faster to use MPNavigator for basic scanning instead of going through Photoshop. In addition, I can't use Photoshop to do batch scanning.Generally, I think this is the best inkjet all-in-one I have seen and the price is excellent for such a well-built machine. After using this machine, I wonder why I didn't buy Canon earlier and why others would pass this on for a HP or Brother.

I purchased the MP530 when it first came out for full price, it's now selling for around $100 at Fry's. Why you ask, because it's a bad value and has flaws. Print, fax, copy and scan functions are acceptable, it's built quite well, but the ink usage and nagging "almost out of ink" window messages render this MFD one of the worst printers I've ever bought.I absolutely hate it -- do you want to spend $60-70 each time to refresh the ink cartridges (which are ridiculously small and use way too much ink to print even a few pages)? I print very little, yet every month I'm buying new cartridges, so in about a year it will have cost $1000 in ink. What a rip -- can't Canon design a printer that has bigger cartridges? What were they thinking? Also, very annoying is the printer's crazy capacity to not copy the outside edges of an 8x11 paper sheet when text approaches the outer edges. You have to manually change the copy/scan/fax setting to 99% (dig deep into the manual for this instruction) in order for it to work properly, and then there is no ability to retain the setting once the printer is turned off. The footprint is very large, it's heavy, noisy, cranks over and over every time you want to print something before it spits it out. If it wasn't for the fact my wife insists on still faxing paper, I would not be purchasing MFDs. Also, you must use Canon cartridges because they have a micro-chip embedded in the cartridge, aftermarket cartridges do not have the chip. Don't bother trying to exchange the chip into an aftermarket cartridge - it doesn't work. All in all a bad deal, but I'm stuck with it. I should have purchased another one of the crappy $100 Brother MFDs, at least you can get ink for about 1/3 the price of the Canon and they last for a year or two before giving up with a bad print head or a broken something or other (I've had 3). Sign me as a frustrated Canon owner - I wish the HPs were better but they are not and cost even more in ink. What a rip! This is an open letter to Canon to get their act together and give the consumers a cost effective home MFD (or for that matter any other printer manufacturer). The current crop of MFDs on the market are cheap to purchase and way too expensive to feed ink to (and again I print less than 50 pages a month and there is no setting to "reduce" the ink used on the Canon - no DPI settings to modify). This will be the last Canon I ever buy (and don't buy an Epson - they make the Canon look like a Diamond)...

This printer does everything you want it to do, but it seems like every other day the ink is "low". If you try to push it and wait till the ink is totally gone, it will get to a point where it will not print because it says the ink is out (you can't even choose to print in grayscale when one of the colors is out. No ink, no print, no way). And when you go to replace the ink, it still appears to have enough to print (probably 1/4 full!). This is a real hassle, and has caused me to really resent this purchase. My only other problem with it is that you cannot turn off the beeps. I have yet to find any setting on it anywhere to turn it off. I used it for a time as a fax machine and the faxes will not come without beeping. Getting faxes in the middle of the night at a home office is sure to wake you up (very annoying if you have fax spammers! And you can't block the numbers!).Honestly, I liked my old HP better. I only upgraded to have the ability to print pictures well, but with the ink problem, there's no way I am going to be doing that - it would cost too much in ink!!

CS had me do the same thing when after two calls I got through. They could not figure out the problem so are going to send me a new ink tank that would take a week. Up until today I was generally satisfied with this multi printer except for the units excessive need for ink. Since time was critical I pulled off the ink tank and cleaned it and still no go. When I was putting the ink cartridges back in I saw that I had left on the yellow tape that covers the prime hole on the top of the black cartridge. Once I took that off the printer starting working fine.

We bought this printer based on extensive research and on the recommendations of a leading consumer magazine. We had trouble on two separate occasions with the ink cartridges "losing their minds" and deciding that they were empty when they were not. This problem "spread" from one cartridge to another, an issue verified by Canon. Although Canon replaced the offending cartridges in a timely manner both times, the printer will not print AT ALL without all cartridges working, so we were out for a couple of days or forced to buy new cartridges. The print head also had to be replaced, requiring the unit to go to a local repair shop. One month after the one-year warranty was finished, the printer gave us another error message and would not print at all. The error message was not specifically covered on Canon's web site, but after going through extensive testing with the CSR at Canon, the printer was declared dead, and we were told that all Canon would do was to give us 15% off a new one since it was out of warranty. We are most disappointed--the printer was really nice but it just did not work well enough and we don't believe that Canon stood behind their product as they should have. We will not buy another Canon despite their high ratings.

I purchased my Canon in December of 2006 and used it often for about 2 to 3 months then it shut down and would not come back on no matter what I did. I took it in for Warranty repair and it seems that the warranty repair company had to replace every component in the machine. After almost 2 months I got my printer back and it worked for a couple more months and then quit completely again. The printer I purchased was brand new however my only choice was to have it repaired again or have Canon sent me a refurbished one. Which at this point I decided that a refurbished one might be my best bet. I was not happy that I would receive a refurbished printer either, after all, it was only a couple months old. I then received my refurbished printer in a couple of days and everything has worked fine until about two months ago when I started having ink cartridge issues. Only two of the cartridges will light up unless I fiddle with them until I get them all to light but the first three, from left to right, are not brightly lit like they were previously. Now it is no longer useable as it continuously shows that the ink cartridges are low even after changing them and my fax has stopped working also. I loved the features for the price and the quality of the printing but I am now very unhappy with this printer because of all the problems and hassles I have had with it and it is now out of warranty so what good is it to me? I have had a Canon printer previously and never had any issues with it.

I only just installed and started using this printer -- (was waiting to use up every drop of the ink in my last and final Epson printer) -- and I really love it. It's a very high-quality piece of equipment at a low price. I love that it has a second paper cassette, meaning I don't have to manually change paper types, and a feed switch right on the front that tells it which paper tray to use. The printer is quiet, prints wonderfully, and I am extremely happy with it. I haven't hooked up the fax yet -- and I probably won't because I always seem to conflicts between phone lines/answering machines/DSL/fax operations. But no matter, because I rarely send faxes anymore and never receive them. They could do away with that function on this machine and I'd still be extremely happy with it.I love its other functions as well -- reduce/enlarge, image and exposure quality, and the two-sided printing. These are features usually reserved for far more expensive printers. So I'm happy as a clam!

I purchased this printer in Sept 07 and have loved it until the past 2 months. It is a real plus that the ink tanks are all separate so that there is no waste of ink as in the "tricolor tanks". The disappointing change is that it is printing a black racing stripe on the back of the sheets. Sometimes this is as wide as 1/2". I am reading that this is a common problem with this model and takes 2-3 hours of time to dismantle the machine, clean it and re-assemble everything. I have run all of the cleaning functions but still have the stripe. Otherwise, it has been a great multi-funtional printer. As soon as I use up my ink cartridges I will be moving to another Canon printer.

My setup: Dell Dimension 9100, nVidia 6800, Dell 19" ultrasharp flat panel, Photoshop Elements 3, Nikon Coolpix 5700 camera. For the initial setup, I inserted the CompactFlash card from the Nikon into the printer and printed a picture on plain paper. This was to determine the printer worked properly out of the box. The results were fine. The 3.5" display is clear and easy to work with. The printer controls are, for the most part, understandable and easy to use. You could do a lot of printing with this machine without a computer and would need only a minimum of reference to the manual.Next, I setup the software on the computer and connected the printer. The printer does not come with any sample paper, so I used Epson Ultra Premium Glossy paper for the first prints via the computer. The first print was a 4x6 done using software provided by Canon. The results were great and the print was done in about 45 seconds. The next print, on Epson paper, was 8 1/2 by 11 via Elements. The results were as good as the Epson Stylus 320. After this, I got Canon's Photo Paper Pro. Using the highest quality setting, the longest it took to print was 6 minutes for a borderless 8 1/2 by 11 print (compare with the Epson Stylus 320, which would have taken over 30 minutes for the same job). The print speed slows down in dense areas, so the denser (darker) the photo, the longer it will take to print. You almost need a lobe to see the dots, the printing is that fine. I would rate the results comparable to photo lab quality.Text printing on plain paper is typical of photo inkjet printers. The results are acceptable, but if you really need quality text printing, use a laser printer - not a photo inkjet printer. Photos are what these printers are all about.Paper feed in this printer is agressive and can be a bit disconcerting. I haven't noticed any scoring of the paper, even so, the Canon includes a setting to increase the gap between the rollers and the paper to stop scoring in the event it does occur. Once paper is initially fed into the machine, printing is very quiet.I've heard reports of red cast on Canon's iP6600. This did not happen here. The color balance of the test prints matched the color balance seen on the monitor - and, I did not make any changes to the computer display or inside Photoshop Elements. For other printers, I've had to reprint after making adjustments to get acceptable results. I haven't had to with this printer. This means less waste (paper, ink), which translates to a lower cost of ownership. I would rate this printer 4 1/2 stars if I could, but instead rated it 4. This is because of a couple short comings.1) There is a note in the manual about removing the power plug - "If the power plug is removed from the wall outlet with the power lamp lit, the printer cannot protect its print heads and may be unable to print." If you think about that statement, you can translate it to mean that if there is a power outage while the printer is printing, the printer may not recover from it. Thus, I've plugged this printer into the regulated/battery backed side of my power distribution box, instead of the surge-protection-only side that I would normally expect to use for a printer.2) The software license agreement absolves Canon of any requirement to support the software on the CD. Canon probably does support it to some extend, but legally they are ensuring they don't have to. I can see doing this in regard to any print utility they provide, as it is freeware and you can always use something else, but I do think at least the driver software should be supported - after all, if the driver malfunctions, that would not be a satisfactory situation to a customer. In summary, I am very pleased with this printer.

This review is in the context of a Mac System. I replace an aging Epson Stylus Color ink-jet printer with this purchase. I was tired of replacing a a three color ink cartridge, and picked the Canon iP3300 in part on the separate ink cartridge approach that this printer uses.We use this as the main general purpose printer for our home computer. I am very pleased with the results. Image quality is excellent. The print looks laser printer quality in sharpness. Color rendition is excellent. The printing is fast. There are two paper paths that can be set up with different papers, making printing from different media easy and automatic. The printer is quiet except for some extra noise when it rapidly loads or quickly spits out paper after completing printing. Even then it is typical for an ink-jet printer. If the rapid load noise is objectionable the printer can be set to load quietly. The drivers are just great. If you open to cover while printing it stops and an alert comes up and gently reminds you to close the top when done. The printer utility runs very well. It gives the options of automatic turn-on and turn-off, head cleaning (including standard, deep cleaning, and bottom plate cleaning), nozzle check test prints, and print head alignment. It also includes an option for quiet mode. In this mode the paper is fed more slowly and quietly than in regular mode, which really is quieter than the standard mode. It even gives the option of setting times of day when quiet mode is in force, a nice touch. The auto turn-on and turn-off is disabled by default, so if you get this printer be sure to set it up in the printer utility. Drive loading required using the included CD. The installer ran smoothly and the disk space requirement is modest. I am running 10.4.9 at this moment, and it works well. The only thing I haven't tried is the PictBridge port in the front since I don't have a digital camera. Images I tested were the background images available in /Library/Desktop Pictures. An interesting observation is that the lp utility work with this printer, but when a pdf file is printed out the text is lighter and less sharp then when the same PDF is printed by Preview. Preview also prints a PDF faster. For straight ASCII both lp and TextEdit are equally fast, but lp lost half a line at the bottom edge of a page. I do some programmatic printing using the command line utilities. Perhaps there is a driver for lp that I'm missing. You don't get automatic duplexing like the Canon PIXMA iP4300 Photo Printer (1438B002), but the iP4300 is $20 more and needs 5 color inks rather than the 3 color inks that to iP3300 uses. I expect cheaper ink costs on the iP3300. If photos are a big issue for you, research the 3 color vs 5 color issue.Anyway, great printer for a great price. 5 stars for the great quality output despite this printer being less than $100. Great text and photo output, individual ink tanks, auto-power, and nice driver.

Printer worked sporadically from the get-go. Contacted Canon support and they sent a replacement (rebuilt) printer. It, too, worked erratically. Couldn't print at all from some programs (like Outlook 2007) or only text or graphics (but not both) from others. After wasting far too much of my time, I bought a comparable HP printer. After fifteen minute set-up it has worked flawlessly right out of the box.

I have been looking at getting a printer/fax/scanner for some time now. And after researching for many months, I settled on this one. This has superceeded my expectations, plus! It scans photos wonderfully, but a little too good. I have some old photos that have a matte finish and somehow the scanner amplifies the pimples on the photo paper. As far as faxing, it's took some figuring out. But come to find out, Vonage phone service has problems with sending out faxes and read somewhere that if you enter *99 1 (area code) then the number, it will send the fax. Which I found vry useful, but only had two faxes that were unable to send even using that little trick. But it's my phone line and has nothing to do with the fax machine itself. The prints are amazing!! I've printed out some photos from this and I was just blown away by how much they looked like a photo. I'm very impressed with this overall.Lastly, the main reason why I purchased this, was when replacing the ink cartridges, it's seperate colors. Granted in the end, it may be a little moe money to buy the cartridges instead of buying a cartidge that has all the colors, but this will save me money by not having to replace 3 colors and only the one I need at that given moment.I truly recommend this product to anyone! I have a Canon PS S2 digital camera and I am pleased with how my camera takes photos, I knew I wouldn't be dissapointed with this product. They have gained a Canon customer for life!!UPDATE :I have owned this printer for 4 years now and it is still going strong. Over time have learned there IS a difference using OEM ink versus NON-OEM. The color is very different and not as rich as the OEM ink.

This camera replaces an identical make/model that I really liked but was made in China and at five years pooped out. I really like the features and do not have to get all the accesseries new. When it works, it's great.RDK...

We've only had it for a few weeks, but so far the only complaint I might have is that it is bigger than I anticipated. It is replacing an HP All-in-one that I was having trouble with and I thought since it was a new model that it would be smaller. Instead it is noticably bigger, but all of the functions are easy to setup and use. I've used it to copy, fax and scan without any trouble. The only thing I haven't done is print pictures.

I have been using this printer/all in one for about two months now and it is great. It prints, copies, and scans with great precision. I was suprised when I got it at how big it was, but it does not really bother me now. If you are looking for a compact all in one, this is not for you. I have it sitting on a file cabinet and it hangs over the sides.

Edited the rating up to 4 (still going strong after 2+ years)I followed the setup instructions to the letter - on step number one I unlocked the scanner lock on the top of the unit per the instructions. It whirred for a bit, then said to 'unlock the scanner lock' again. I opened the unit, found two more packing tapes inside that needed to be removed (note that for unpacking yours it doesn't tell you to look in there, or even that there is a 'in there' at that point), removed them and still got same error message.Called their support line, they told me I should see ink cartridge come to center of unit when I open the lid and that that was the problem, they said I could get a refurbished unit, I said get lost I'm getting an HP.Trying to click return here on Amazon, that feature was down. So I tipped the printer up on its edge just to see if there was some packing materials or something stuck onto the cartridge holder I couldn't see. Nothing to be found there. I gently set unit back down - and error went away.Hmmmmm... I'll report back from here - but this encourages me to buy expensive electronics from a store so that I can just return it and get another one, instead of getting stuck with a refurbished one from a snooty manufacturer.Update:Well, I heard right back from Amazon they're sending me a replacement. I still have the first one here. When I get the new one I'll try it and send one back. Great work Amazon! My current one showed that same error an additional time or two - I tipped it up on end again and fixed it as before. I received it one additional time, and turning off and on again fixed it. I've been using it for the last 24 hours just fine. Go figure. I guess I'll try the new one for a day and if it has no problems, send the old one back. This is a really nice printer!Update: new one is just fine, guess I just got a lemon the first time and was kind of mad that Canon tried to foist a refurbished unit off on me instead of telling me I'd just get a new one. Crooks. Thanks Amazon! Saved the day.Edit: Two years later and I've not had one problem. I'm bumping my review up to a 4 star from 3. I would have purchased one with wireless networking and maybe a FAX function given hindsight. This has been a very durable machine.

This was my first digital camera that I received back in 2004 - and only now do I see it failing on me (there are lines that look like scratches that are probably produced on the image due to worn out card reading mechanism). I also own a Canon EOS Rebel 35mm camera and will say Canon is the brand to go with.I would buy the s500 for any really young person today trying to learn digital photography...and not paying much for it. Yes, it doesn't look as fancy as the new ones, but my photos have been amazing quality in the highest resolution modes using manual mode. [...]The only thing that has been upgraded over the years with all the cameras has been the size of the LCD screen - which I've gotten used to. Yes it's about half as small as a standard cellphone screen nowadays. The boxy size of it fits in all jeans pockets and small purses. It does video too and is one of the old-fashioned digital cameras compared to today.I was a 35mm experienced photographer when I began using it for candid shots and was not disappointed due to the ability to control a lot of the functions. Also it uses the old style compact flash cards as memory, which are bigger, as are the rectangle batteries, but it's very compact made as a whole. Best quality are the photos!

I have had this camera for 4 or 5 years now. It takes great photos easily. Small enough to fit it your pocket, but not thin enough to break in your pocket when you sit down. I've dropped it more times than I care to remember and it still takes great pictures. My only gripe about the camera is that it is FREAKIN' SLOW TO FOCUS. I'm suprised that my finger has not gone through the body of the camera a few times in trying to get the darn thing to click. But I say this about all digital cameras that I've used. This probably depends on how much the battery is charged, but tell that to a 3-year-old who won't stand still or a whale that just jumped out of the water.By now, there are higher-resolution, faster cameras with bigger screens on the market, but I will stick with Canon when this one ultimately dies. Their optics and electronics are excellent.Thank you so much schmalyn! Every 2 or 3 years you will need to replace the internal battery to fix the "memory card error". The battery is an Energizer 339 also known as a SR614SW 1.55 volts. Call around to watch repair shops. Radio Shack and Circuit City do not carry this battery. I would recommend buying an extra one ($8 US) and keeping it with your camera stuff. It would really ruin a vacation if you couldn't find a battery, although any photos that you had already taken should be safe on the card. Not only did changing the battery fix the "memory card error", but the function wheel (as I call it) now works too. I had always assumed it was a physical problem. The function wheel (with the manual overrides and movie functions) has not worked for 3 years -- maybe it never worked, but now it does. The battery is an Energizer 339 also known as a SR614SW 1.55 volts. Call around to watch repair shops. Radio Shack and Circuit City do not carry this battery.A few comments, there are ELEVEN not nine screws, and I would suggest marking the body of the camera with a thin permanent marker BEFOREHAND. The screws appear to be of different depths and thicknesses. Have a big clear flat surface to work on. As you take out the screws, line up the screws as you take them out. When replacing the front casing, make sure to put the A/V Out rubber flap back in place. Before replacing the back casing, make sure you line up the camera/play switch inside and out.I cannot be angry with Canon for the battery going dead, but I can be upset with them for not putting it in an externally accessible place.

I got this at a lower price than it is selling for right now and also had a gift certificate. I am not sure if I would pay the current price for it.The MP530 is a pretty good multi-function printer. The print quality is pretty good even at "Draft" settings. But I have not tried to print photos with this yet. The paper tray is also a convenient feature, although the feed switch can be confusing sometimes - I've tried to print envelopes and the printer ended up using paper from the tray, rather than the envelope from the rear feeder. The auto-feed scanner is great - I was able to scan multiple pages in a single step. However, it appears that double-sided scanning will require me to reload the pages flipped - not such a big deal. The lid also adjusts to thick originals, so I'm guessing scanning book pages should be possible (I've tried with something about .25" thick)I have never used the included software, so I can't comment on that.Copying is also a breeze and copies come out pretty decent. I have not tried the Fax function. The only problem I had (and continue to have) with this printer is that one of the ink cartridges (cyan) has some problem, so the printer doesn't detect the ink level correctly. It didn't happen when I first got it, but the problem started after I changed the orientation of the printer - could be something loose in the cartridge electronics. It gives an error code whenever the printer is turned on, but it is easy to reset it (you have to do it as soon as it turns on by holding the reset button for > 5 secs). The problem now is that the printer doesn't know how much ink is left in the cyan cartridge and hence cannot warn you of low ink - you will have to check yourself. Using an empty cartridge is likely to mess up the printer completely, if I am to believe other websites.

Purchased less than two years ago, and it stopped printing in black ink (only color). Take a look through [...] and find out how many other people had this exact same issue! After getting in touch with Canon, they were able to provide a discount on a new printer. Servicing this one did not make sense given that the diagnostic fee from the authorized Canon service center was $80+. Worked great for the time that I had it though.

I have wanted an all-in-one for quite some time, and needed to wait for an old (Lexmark) prineter to die. I have owned HP, Canon and Lexmark printers in the past, and Canon and Epson scanners. We picked this unit based in part on consumer reports information, as well as some online reviews (thank you Amazon audience).I have used it for all of the major functions now and they have worked flawlessly.I use it for copying and printing mostly, and will use it more heavily for scanning in the future. The document feeder works great (first unit I've had with one). One major advantage that Canon has over it's cometitors is the separate color ink refills. Think about it this way, you waste a lot of ink if you have to change the cartridge just because the cyan is out, when you may have plenty of magenta or yellow left. Using a Canon will show how you do end up replacing them at different times, and getting more out of your ink. (I hadn't seen anybody else harp on this, so I thought I'd add it).

Factory Refurbished unit is as good as new, and a great deal for only $50 including shipping. The only problem is that it is extremely slow, and does not have an easy way to print in black and white, or to designate whether you want to use photo ink or ordinary color ink. It is especially slow on the first print after startup, which is often for me, because I turn it off to conserve electricity.

I received this printer as a Christmas gift from my parents, since I admired their same model. Printing speed, resolution, and color look just as good as my larger HP Photosmart. The size and weight make for relative ease in mobility; it fits nicely in my school bag. The only issue I have with the printer is not with the printer, it's with Canon. For the price of this printer ($319 original price), I would think they could throw in a USB cable. Other than the inconvenience of an additional trip to the Radio Shack, the printer is great.

I like the Canon MP530 though there are still many features I don't know how to use. It's much bigger than I thought it would be but fortunately not too big for the space I have. Makes great images and is faster than my very old HP printer. I'm still not sure what to do about the cartridges when I'll need one; which shouldn't be for some time as I don't use it every day. I've read reviews about the quality and expense of buying cartridges from you or elsewhere. So far we're enjoying it and have no complaints about this purchase.Thank you,Linda Landerholnurse@citcom.net
