If you think computer speakers in plastic cabinets are squawky and unpleasant, try these and you might revise your opinion. The sound is great, with more than enough bass thanks to the 20 watts RMS subwoofer, and smooth integration with the dual-driver satellite speakers, rated at 10 watts RMS per channel which means plenty loud enough for most listening.Considering the price, I cannot fault the sound. No, it is not quite as good nor as loud as a high-end home hi-fi that costs ten times the price or more, but within its limitations it is outstanding and I have heard worse from far more expensive kit. What you get is a powered cylindrical subwoofer with mains input and other connections on the back, two passive satellite speakers, and a wired remote which has volume and bass controls together with a headphone socket and a further input socket designed for an MP3 player, tablet or smartphone. The appearance is striking. I like the subwoofer, which stands just under 40cm high and 16cm diameter, and has a downward-firing 4-inch driver. That will be on the floor and out of the way though, and I am not so sure about the satellite speakers, which look a bit like binoculars stood on their sides. These satellite speakers must not be placed on the floor; I tried and they sounded dreadful. They are perfect sited both sides of a computer screen on your desk, or by a television on a stand, or on a table where you might be watching a video on a tablet. The wires do get a bit in the way though, since at a minimum you have a cable to your sound source, cables from the subwoofer to each speaker, and a cable to the wired remote. The cables are also bright orange, so you will not miss them! The ergonomics of the wired remote are not that great. It is a little round thing, where the top half forms a rotating on-off switch and volume control. Underneath it at the back is a small volume control for the bass alone. This is very effective, and transforms the sound from thin and reedy to deep rumbling; hopefully you can find a spot in between that is to your taste. My main complaint about the remote is that it is too easy to knock the volume accidentally, especially while adjusting the bass. I would also have preferred a wireless remote, especially as the supplied cables are not that long.Another small annoyance is that the overall gain is too little for some sound sources. I plugged in a smartphone, and even with the phone at maximum volume, the Z553 was unable to get to its own maximum volume. It was loud enough for me though. The build quality seems excellent. Each speaker has an integral stand with three rubber spikes to prevent any rocking.I doubt you will have any problem connecting up. On the back of the sub are inputs for two RCA phonos or a 3.5mm stereo jack, together with outputs for the two slave speakers, and a special connector for the wired remote. If you add in the input on the remote itself, you can connect up to three sources simultaneously, but there is no way to switch between them so unless you like a cacophony of sound, you had better turn on only one at a time.If you need better sound from your computer or TV, or small speakers to use with a tablet or smartphone, these are an excellent choice in terms of sound quality. In terms of appearance, you be the judge; I don't mind them, but I do not love them either. In terms of convenience, there are a few too many wires for my liking.Still, for me it is the sound that counts, and once they are installed on your desk with the wires tucked away as far as possible, you will soon forget any inconvenience. Recommended.

I like to think that I make reasonable, prudent, and quality-conscious decisions when it comes to tech items, and this Logitech Z-5500 digital sound system reflects those words along with two others that comes to mind: HIGH PERFORMANCE! From the highs and mid-range sounds to the deep, deep thundering bass that only a huge, double-reflex 13"x13"x15" cabinet of a sub-woofer could manage to produce, the Logitech system is an incredible performing product. That it has close to 600W peak power is one thing, but to deliver it in the manner that this system does with superior DAC controllers and amazing line filters is a whole different ball game compared to less sophisticated systems. The "new" system from Logitech, the "replacement" for this beautiful sound array is supposed to be so much better than the Z-5500, but something got lost in the translation for me, personally, and I'm perfectly satisfied to continue on with this system and not "go forward" and choose the new "all-digital" Logitech system that is so "advanced" vs the Z-5500. With all due respects I have to pronounce the Z-5500 a better choice for myself, and my musical tastes and feelings vs the new system, and all others for that matter in terms of "computer speakers"--such as these are called. The Z-5500 is soooooo easy to set up and enjoy, too! I hooked up the system to my 3 favored devices (via Toslink connections) which surround my work station in my studio where I spend most of my time when working or enjoying my computer systems and audio-video devices, in about 10 minutes and I was ready to enjoy fine, fine sound reproduction. I have a Nyrius (available here at Amazon.com also) 3-Way Toslink Switch which I use to segregate the sounds from a Samsung Blu-Ray player, a Samsung LCD 40" HDTV, and the PC itself with its dedicated Asus Xonar Essence ST PCI Sound Card, all 3 devices having the requisite Toslink or Mini Toslink to Toslink ports to allow this conversion to take place, and BAM! I was done with setup but to pick the presets and features on the Logitech Controller device that I wanted to use, after configuring the speakers, of course. There are those who argue with me about "pure sound" and that "the best features of the Asus Xonar Essence" PC sound card are its dedicated DAC devices, which are supposed to be superior to the Logitech Controller's DAC's, but I really don't care to take up that conversation when I am 100% satisfied with the sounds emanating from my speakers as I set it up originally. No doubt I might change my perceptions of the Logitech DAC's (Digital Audio Converters) if I were to hear the "pure sounds" of the Asus device's DAC's, but for convenience's sake I will stick with my Mini-Toslink to Toslink cable from the Asus sound card to the Logitech controller, and be happy in my ignorance, I suppose. The Z-5500 continues the Logitech device system of separate titanium-tweeters/mid-range satellite speakers (5 of them), the dedicated Logitech controller where you make selections as to sound preferences, volume and the like choices, and a big, bad, (HUGE in fact) 13"x13"x15" sub-woofer with a gigantic 10-pound electro-dynamic MAGNET in the enclosure, for the ultimate bass "thump", "push", or "blast" (take your pick), and it's a winning combination for certain! One of the dedicated tweeter/midrange speakers is placed in the "Center" position for the most amazing voice and tympany-associated sounds from a Center speaker in the mix, while there are two speakers used for "Left" and "Right" traditional stereo output, and the last two are the "Surround Sound" speakers in the digital progression of defining the big-ranged output.I have the left and right channel speakers up high on my credenza on the top shelf (3 shelves in front of me, looking toward a wall and the Samsung HDTV), the surround sound satellites on the lower level of the desk, left and right, and finally I have the big sub-woofer placed ON THE FLOOR (carpeted) near my footwell in the work station, for the ultimate big bass explosions that inevitably come from that amazingly powerful bass reflex speaker, the most powerful I've ever experienced, frankly! I cannot tell you all reading this how heavy the bass sub-woofer is, but suffice to say it would easily "crack glass, bend metal, perhaps snap a redwood beam" if necessary, I mean it can be LOUD! However it's not a bad loud, it's like heavy compression and release of a never-ending "sound bomb" going off underneath the desk and it travels throughout my home like an indigenous bass blast emanating from all corners of the floor level of the place. CRAZY!Suffice to say this is one, major-league powerhouse of a sound system, and whether you are playing rock, jazz, classical, reggae, new wave, alternative music, whatever...the system is true to life and really entertaining to listen to. It can overwhelm you if you are inside my studio, this is surely true, with the volume turned up too high, so I literally never have the syste

To begin, I wish to state that I strongly believe that music related electronics require at least a month of solid use before being judged. Conversely, the Vine program that I am reviewing these for really prefers that we get reviews up quickly, so my compromise was to use & burn in these powered speakers for 1 week before writing this review. If my opinion changes significantly over the next month, I will revise this review. The speakers did improve significantly over the week; they were horribly bright straight out of the box.One other comment; it's been YEARS since I bought new computer speakers, so I can only guess how these compare to other similarly priced current offerings.I have 3 computers in my home office, & only had 2 pairs of speakers, so was glad to get these. I am comparing them against the following:1. A very old set of Advent AV390PL 3-Piece Computer Speakers that are by far the most musical sounding inexpensive speakers I have ever heard. I bought them MANY years ago (1999?) from Amazon on clearance at less than 50% of today's price of the Z553. I am using them on an old Win 98 box that I pretty much use only for audio. The sound card is an ancient ISA entry level Creative 16/442. A set of mediocre Logitech X-220 2.1 32 Watt Speakers that I paid almost nothing for at the time, but today sell for 50% of what these do. They are on a generic Dell with a generic built in Realtek "HD" sound chipThe Z553's under review here are installed on a 1 year older Dell very similar to the one I refer to as #2 above.I am NOT a gamer, this review is for music only, though I suspect these would be lacking in bass for gamers.First what I like:1. The volume "pod". I LOVE that the volume control sits next to my mouse & is easily accessible. However there are 2 things I don't like about it:a. I really wish it was wireless (though the orange color of the cables doesn't bother me as another reviewer mentions)b. The bass control is hidden on the back of the volume control & really takes serious effort to access. The reason that doesn't matter much is the sub woofer is pretty weak, & while I'm not a bass freak or a hip hop fan, I almost always leave the bass on full2. They have a pretty small foot print3. While I suspect I'll never use it, they do have a second RCA input for a stand alone player.4. Sound staging is excellent for the price. What I don't like:1. They have a strong tendency towards brightness2. On more audiophile quality music that isn't compressed to death, they aren't quite loud enough. On "modern sounding" mastered cd's, they are plenty loud, though. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. The Advents are both louder & much more musical sounding; & on the other hand the Z553's are MUCH better than the garbage Logitech X-220's (though AMAZINGLY the Z220's got a 4 star rating average in 24 reviews). I have no clue what the 24 people were thinking & in my opinion the Z220's are only worth the Twenty or so I paid for them a few years ago!Comparing the 3 speakers I have access to, I would recommend getting a set of the Advents which as of this writing are available used on Amazon. I plan to continue using the Z553's as my #2 speakers for the time being, though. They're not bad, & if you like the somewhat bright sound in the upper midrange & loud sound of "modern mastering"; or if you play mp3's, you may very well be perfectly satisfied with these.

I initially got these speakers for a surround setup for my computer. I used it that way for a long time and was completely blown away by it, but eventually I decided to go with monitor speakers for my computer speakers and now use these on my TV. These are amazing in a lot of ways, and I'm just going to outline everything in the pros and cons list.Pros:-Has a receiver with an optical and coax for surround along with analogue for computers or MP3 players/phones. I have it hooked optically into my LED TV and it works absolutely perfectly despite the source, and switches to surround sound automatically when it detects it.-Way more power than you probably need. The sub will shake pictures off walls if they're not attached well with the right music. I could see the full volume being used in a large room where they are mounted far away, but for smaller rooms you probably won't even come close unless you want to annihilate your eardrums.-Doesn't have a large head unit to mount. The receiver is small and looks good placed off to the side. It is also not completely black so it won't match sometimes, and while I don't prefer this having it sit a little away from all the main stuff makes it look okay.-Sound is very crisp and clear. Probably where a 1500 dollar Bose system sits as far as quality of the drivers, but as we all know Bose has the additional nasty processing to help them sound better in the show room. The only issue is they took a bit of playing with the settings to get them sounding right. I'm very particular about sound and pay very close attention to it when I'm mixing and mastering music all the way to when I'm in my car. These don't disappoint, but don't expect them to offer you the most amazing sound experience in the world. They have a more neutral EQ and limited sound tweaking potential within the setup, however that is what I prefer. I made it sound great only with the TV's sound processing.-Has a "secret" menu mode that changes the colors and onscreen look a little bit. Look it up!Cons:-Primarily made for computers, so when they're switched to a TV or Blu-ray source it takes a little bit of extra tweaking to make them sound amazing.-The middle speaker's stand broke off very early in it's life. For whatever reason the plastic that holds the stand on is the most thin out of all of them, I wouldn't be surprised if this happens to all of them even just being stored. However I just put a small pillow for it to sit on and it works great. In any case if I were to buy a surround sound set of speakers again I would be hard pressed not getting the Z906 replacements. They're really that good.

This is one of the most powerful systems you'll find that's designed specifically for use with a computer. Some details on the system:It's got enough inputs that you could hook it up to other media as well. Amp is built into the rather large powered subwoofer, which connects to the speakers through standard speaker wire. The speaker wire that comes with it is thin and cheap, but it works. The satellite speakers could be switched out for better quality speakers. If you choose to do this, know that all you need speakers rated at 8 ohms with a decently high sensitivity rating, high 80s or above. The control pod hooks up to the subwoofer and you connect your media into the control pad. It comes with the colored analog inputs (which is standard for all soundcards built within the past 10 years), as well as digital (optical and coaxial) inputs. Inputs can be switched with the control pod. If you want to connect to your soundcard with a digital connection, you will need a soundcard that supports the connection as well as Dolby Digital Live or DTS. Newer soundcards generally come with this, but keep in mind that newer soundcards are also designed to have a perfectly flat sound out of the box. If you want to get your audio sounding better, you have to play around with whatever Equalizer and Bass/Trebel settings the drivers give you. I recommend lowering the 1k, 2k, and 4k sliders or whichever sliders are closest to those on your soundcard. Adjust bass and highs to your liking. In any case, analog is going to give you a crisper and louder sound, so I wouldn't bother hooking it up to your PC with a digital connection. The subwoofer is so large and powerful that it comes with a warning to avoid placing other electronic equipment near it due to the heavy magnets contained within. I wouldn't worry too much about it, for all I know it's just a marketing scheme. All the same, I wouldn't put hard disk drives or old crt screens next to it.You may be wondering why I only gave this three stars and that is because despite all the Z5500's merits, it still has some pretty heavy cons:1. The low mid-range (around 160-500 Hz) is practically nonexistent. This is due to the ridiculously high internal crossover which cannot be adjusted combined with the fact that the satellite speakers aren't really capable of producing any low mids let alone bass by themselves. Simply put, the sub tries to handle more than it is capable of so that the sats don't even have to try. This is bad news for music lovers because you won't be able to hear instruments that make use of the low mid-range all that well. Low string instruments, crunchy electric guitars, higher bass notes, and any synth effects in electronic music designed to fill that register won't sound good. There are "weaker" systems, even ones designed for your PC, which are going to sound better for music.2. It's very likely that this system is overkill for whatever room you're going to put it in. If you're putting this in is 12x12x8 or something anywhere close to that, you'll be treated to some very uneven sounding bass where certain frequencies have way more "boom" to them than others. You may be thinking that sounds cool but it isn't, especially not for bass heavy music like drum & bass and dubstep. Some notes are going to sound muted while others create a hideous resonance which pounds your skull and rattles doors/windows/lighting fixtures. Putting ugly and expensive acoustic foam in your room can help lessen this, but this isn't an ideal solution for reasons which can already be found in this sentence. This isn't really the fault of the system, but they market it for PC use and you PC is likely to be located in a relatively small room which simply isn't going to work well.3. The system has been steadily climbing in price and for what it costs now, you might be able to find a sub/sat/receiver package deal which sounds much better and is more versatile than the Z5500. If you decide to look for something else, go for a system where the satellite speakers have at least one mid-range core and one tweeter. The sats that come with the Z5500 are single core speakers, and they sound like it.If you decide to go ahead and get this system despite my warnings, here's a list of things you can do to get it sounding better.1. Adjust your soundcard's equalizer and trebel/bass settings to your liking.2. Make sure the speakers are spaced far enough apart, with as equal spacing as possible to create an even soundstage.3. If you've got a decent soundcard, use the analog inputs over digital. With digital connections, the audio signal has to be encoded, passed along a digital cable, and then decoded by the control pod. All that beautiful hardware in your soundcard goes to waste and some of the details in the audio get lost in the process. An analog connection is more pure because you're just relying on your soundcard to process the audio signal. It is possible that digital will sound

Why not 5-Stars? Only because of cost - but if it serves your purpose as it did mine, the cost of $30 may be worth it. Read on, or just skip to the Summary at the bottom. Logitech Z205 Portable Computer Speaker - BlackI got the the Z205 digital speaker system for the purpose of sharing the audio of a video lecture with others in a small room. I know that if I wanted a lot of volume, I needed to have speakers with a power supply that I plug into a wall socket. Neither the computer power nor the Monitor speakers were adequate for my purpose - we had to have silence in the room and adjacent rooms to discern (most) of what was said when we used either of them. I have another speaker with its own power that I can lug around, and I have a set of speakers with their own power on my desk that I could disconnect and take with me for nice stereo sound for music. That is not what I needed.I needed a small speaker (or speakers) that would fit into my Laptop case and set up fast and easy, even if there was no power plug available, and did not cost too much cost. ($30 was more than I had expected, but that was in comparison to speakers that need a power supply and delivered about the same or even twice the same sound volume.)The z205 is perfect for what I wanted. It has only about 1w output because it is drawing the power through the USB connection that was never designed to serve this purpose and thus has limited power delivery capacity. That means, if you want more volume in a noisy environment, or want high quality stereo music, do not get speakers powered by USB, the Z205 or any others. If you want some increased volume over that delivered by Laptop speakers, especially to hear YouTube Video speakers and such, this little Z205 is just what you want. For the convenience of a power control on the box, I see there is a Z305 Logitech USB Laptop Speaker Z305 for nearly twice the money, has a nice cable storage, but is larger and would not fit into my Laptop case even if I wanted to pay that much. It cannot have any more power output than the Z205. It may (I do not know) have a more efficient design to deliver a little more volume and better sound quality. I do not care, -- the Z205 works for my purpose, and if it does not have sufficient loudness or quality for you, get speakers with their own power supply -- Some of these are actually less money because it is old technology and every body makes them.A note in the use of the Z205. It must be plugged in before you start the audio/video player. Then, for the computer speakers to work wnen the Z205 is unplugged, you must restart the player again. (I have not read the directions - perhapa they tell you this.)In summary, if you want the convenience of a little more sound volume than your Laptop, in a very portable speaker that does not require a power plug to use, the Z205 is a good choice. If you want loud volume or real high-fidelity music, get something that needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet to get its power, either directly (can cost less than $20) or by a rechargeable battery (that has price of $80+). When they were able to get the cost down below $20 for this newer digital technology of the Z205 and Z305 (that both have limited volume because of the technology), I changed my 4-Stars rating to 5-Stars ($22.23 with shipping).

These were on sale for just $10 at Frys so I thought what the heck, I'll pick up a pair and my kids can use them with the old laptop I gave them. When I hooked them up to MY laptop first, I didn't want to give them away anymore!*These will NOT fill a room with sound. At a distance (sofa to TV kind of distance) they sound equal to or better than the better speakers built into wide screen televisions - a feat that is not hard to do, since most wide screen televisions are designed to be as thin as possible, not to provide a good container for each speaker (with appropriate depth and speaker cabinet volume).Where these speakers really shine, however, is when used in "near field" effect mode. Which is to say you don't stuff them behind your laptop monitor (or desktop monitor, they can of course be used with a desktop computer) you stuff them on the left and right side of the keyboard. That way your head, your ears, are darn close to the speakers. In THAT mode they sound really, really good - good base, good midrange, good highs. The ideal setup is front facing speakers in-line with your ears, so it looks like they are firing straight past, instead of straight into, your ears. How is this possible?Well think about it. Think how good single driver earphones can sound, when plugged in your ear canal close to your ear drum. It's not the volume, its because the tiny drivers don't have to work hard to produce a large volume because your ear drums are so close. These are like giant ear phones. Keep them close to your head, and they sound great. Back away 3 feet and they don't sound so good - not adequate volume, not good sound balance. But near field? Awfully darn good.Setup is incredibly easy. Plug one cord into an unused USB slot for power, the minijack cord into your headphone plug on your laptop. No on off switch, no volume control, just control the volume from the laptop itself and it works fine.So how much do I like these? Enough that I'm trying to figure out how to pack them in a wheelie when I go on my next trip.** Admittedly earphones still sound much better, but I don't like the feeling of isolation they create, and I like to be able to walk around the hotel room sometimes. In near field - hunkered down near the keyboard - good enough to enjoy music. And excellent for video! The one negative is that they aren't small like some of the so-called "capsule" speakers. But in terms of sound quality these blow capsule speakers away.BTW I bought some $60 and $80 higher end, power brick style accessory speakers, and the sound from those weren't any better if you sit sofa-distance or even half that distance away from the monitor. The only thing that works well in that situation is a regular amplifier with regular speakers or some of the Soundworks 3 piece (left, right, subwoofer) set ups.________________________________________*Don't worry, I will buy a second set for the kids. I am not sure whether I will order them from Amazon or make the long drive out to Fry's and deal with their particular form of retail circus/insanity. The advantage of these for the kids is two fold: they will fit on the small coffee table where I set up their laptop, and they don't have a power brick, so they save space (since I worry about the risk of fire in setting the power brick down on the carpet instead of up on the coffee table).* This is a trip where I will go to a destination resort for two weeks and not be moving around, and where I will suffer extreme video withdrawal if I can't stream videos, watch Hulu, Netlix, play DVD's etc., making the hassle of carrying these small mayonaise jar sized speakers worthwhile. I DON'T recommend them for every short jaunt business trip, and they certainly won't do the trick if you like to place your laptop on your lap - earphones are the best solution for good audio in that setting. But if you think you might like to set up a little music/video on your hotel desk, these are cheap and sweet.

I suspected the sound quality of the Logitech Z553 speakers might be compromised when saw their design, and unfortunately my suspicions seem to be correct. If they were budget speakers I would have no complaints. But these are one of Logitech's current "Best" 2.1 speakers and I don't feel they warrant their premium price tag.Don't get me wrong. I like these speakers. They have a unique look, have solid build quality, and sturdy cables (except for the flimsy 3.5 audio cable that actually connects to the computer). They come packaged well and have good set-up instructions. Set-up is easy though I am not sure how you wall mount them. The stands adjust 90 degrees for optimal placement. If you like red wires, you'll love the Z553 speaker system, though some may want something a little more subdued. Still, the entire system has a well-designed color scheme and are attractive units if that's what you want. The control pod is pretty cool and has a nice feel as one adjusts the volume. There are ports on the sub-woofer for additional audio inputs and jacks on the pod as well. One issue I have is that there isn't a whole lot of volume. For 40 Watts I was expecting a bit more "oomph". The bass is a bit weak as well, considering the size of the sub-woofer. I've had speaker systems that put out a lot more bass in a similar form factor. I had to turn the base level up to full via the control pod and tweak my equalizer in iTunes to pump out more bass. My wife even walked by when I was listening to various music samples and said, "Is that all the bass they have?"The two main speakers don't live up to their premium label either. Yes, they have great clarity and produce a respectable sonic "stage". However, they sound a bit shrill and flat to my ears. Granted, I've been listening to higher-end speakers before this, but I still think they could perform better. They also have a very limited "sweet zone". If you are close to them and have the speakers pointed towards your ears, then you should be good. Move slightly outside of that zone and the audio quality drops noticeably. These speakers sound great either up close and focused, or from a distance. There is no middle zone.As I said, I like these speakers. They sound pretty good when you're in their optimal playing range and you have the volume (and bass) up high. Mid-range clarity is quite good. They are not what I'd consider premium 2.1 speakers though, and I think consumers can find better options for less elsewhere, thus the 3 stars (3.5 rounded down). For a less 'stylish' yet better sounding Logitech deal, consider the 200 Watt Z623 Speaker System.~Kort

These speakers might be fine for someone who really hates the usual boxy design of speakers. I like the roundness of all the components, and while the red-orange cords look sort of like something you might take camping, it makes them very easy to pick out among the black spaghetti tangle around and behind many TVs and desks.Setting up is very easy even if you don't read the sparse instructions. The inputs are simple and well-labeled (extra points for black-on-red labeling, instead of the black-on-black that's the bane of us older folks) and the components are all lightweight yet solid-feeling. Incidentally, to mount the speakers on a wall, you have to pop out the rubber feet on the Y-shaped stands, then put bolts through the holes. No bolts are included, nor do they even tell you what size to get; at this price, would it have killed them to include six bolts? So it looks fine, as long as you keep it off. But when I tried using this system on a Wii, a TV, a laptop and a smartphone, it mostly fell short even by my non-audiophile standards. I love playing dance games and workout videos, and I was looking forward to be able to crank up the music, but I discovered that sound quality varies greatly from game to game. Just Dance 2 was the worst; I had to turn the volume all the way up and it still had a muffled, AM-radio quality. Michael Jackson: The Experience was better, but volume still had to be cranked. The best sound came from Dance Dance Revolution II, the only game where I didn't have to turn the volume up all the way. I wish I could've tested this with my Xbox 360, but because it only has a digital audio output and this system only has analog inputs (one left-right input and 2 earbud-style inputs) it would require an adapter like this one Gen RCA Audio Cable Adapter for XBOX 360 + Slim plus an additional cable. Many HDTVs don't have analog audio outputs either - I have one that does and one that doesn't - so check first.Next I tried the speakers on a phone and a laptop. The laptop was mediocre and the phone was awful: muffled and low even with the speakers and phone all the way up. If you want to play music on your phone and have it fill the room, don't get these! The speakers have rather large footprints compared to others; add the volume pod, and you're giving up a lot of "real estate" if your desk is smallish and cluttered.Unless you love the way these look, there are probably better alternatives out there for the price.

I wish I could afford to be an audiophile, but I haven't yet won the lottery so I look for quality on a budget. I picked up a pair of Logitech X-140's about 3 years ago at an Office Depot and they're still going.I play a lot of music through iTunes, and while they are not the best music speakers, they aren't bad. They get some decent lower end and you can usually push them pretty far for some comparatively big sound if you mess with the EQ in iTunes or whatever music player you have. I listen to a wide variety of music, from Bach to Deadmou5, and after playing with the EQ enough, I recommend the following settings:Volume knob (on the speakers): no more than halfway (control the volume through your computer or device)Tone knob: 1/232Hz: 4-5dB64Hz: 7-8dB125Hz: 5dB250Hz: 1dB500Hz: 01KdB: 5dB2K2B: 5dB4K: 1-2dB8K: -2db16K: 3dBNote: I listed the frequencies where you have a little play room on either side of the dashes. So for example, 32Hz you can set it anywhere between 4db low and 5dB high, depending on your preference.Of course, these are my preferences. You're not going to get a lot of heavy bass out of these, so if you like a lot of house or R&B, um, good luck. The speakers overall have held up pretty well. After 3 years, I'm beginning to hear a buzz if they're sitting idle, which is what prompted me to come and leave this review, to see if anyone else was having issues. Seems some reviewers have had issues, but with new sets. It may just be time to go with another set...[UPDATE]: Well, that was interesting. I guess my fiddling with the dials while writing this review finally was too much for my old Logitech X-140's and the subwoofer isn't playing anymore. Ah, well. They were still pretty good for the 3 years I had them, especially if you don't have a lot of room for subwoofer. While my dream speakers are the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks, since I too don't have room for a subwoofer, I will most likely go with the Creative T10's or the GOgroove SonaWAVE Ti's.

Originally, I got this speaker system to use with my laptop when streaming. I was hooking up the laptop to my TV with the PC connection. Thus, I had video on the TV, but audio on my laptop. My laptop's speakers are not that great, and I had to leave the laptop opened while streaming. Then, right after I got these Logitech speakers, and before I could try them out while streaming, I noticed something I had forgotten on my laptop--it had an HDMI port! Thus, no need for these speakers for streaming with the laptop on the TV.That's okay, however. I use them with the laptop all the time for everything else, and they are wonderful. They have a really good sound and they are certainly loud enough. Using them with my iPod is great, too. Only remember, when using external speakers with an iPod, the setting of your iPod's equalizer can affect the sound that comes out of the speakers. I like treble and the equalizer setting of "spoken word" sounds best to me. On these speakers, that setting works, too. Using the EQ setting "deep", however, sounds horrible when playing music on these speakers. Yet, the "deep" setting works really well with a small iHome speaker system I have used--iHome iDM1 Sleek Stereo Speaker System for iPad, iPhone, iPod or other Audio Devices. Just test out the different EQ settings on your iPod while playing a song on a speaker system, to see what setting sounds the best to you and set it to that. Also, remember that what you stream at certain websites while on your PC is not always going to be in stereo. The first time I used these speakers, I was streaming a live workshop from a website, and the sound was coming out of only one speaker. I though I had a defective system! But no, it was just that workshop on that website was in mono. I was so happy I didn't have to send these speakers back. Talking about sending them or taking them some place, while this Logitech system is not small, it is portable to a point. It comes in a very nicely padded box with a handle, so it can be easily packed up and carried. One more nice thing about this nice speaker system.

We found one of these on an in-store sale locally for less than $10, and used it steadily for over two years on a netbook.- Boost: the boost in sound was excellent.- Quality: The quality of the sound always seemed very good, certainly a huge step up over the built in netbook speakers.- Attachment: The clip was strong enough to stay clipped on solidly without putting pressure on the screen or anywhere you would not want it to. A real nice feature was the design of the clip made it very easy to grasp to clip and unclip. That was a nice touch.- Weight: The unit was light enough that even though we used it on a netbook it did not cause balance issue - this is a big deal that is often overlooked.- Volume controls.....well, we pretty much just kept it at full volume and modulated it using the built in soft audio controls, so I cannot comment on how well they worked.- USB Connection: The one step USB connection was great; no batteries, no separate power cable. We have other external speakers that require batteries, and it is always a pain when the sound starts to distort because the batteries are worn down AGAIN and you have to wrestle new ones in.- Power Consumption: as mentioned, we used these on a little HP netbook that ran off battery most of the time. I cannot say there was a noticeable difference in power drain when these were plugged in, so I would say they were not battery hogs.- Overall Quality: we had these speakers for 2 years in constant use so that should tell you something about 1) their build quality, and 2) how much we liked them. One day we noticed the sound was not working, we switched cables, etc., and were able to verify that they were finally dead for some reason that was not readily apparent from an external inspection. The Big Question: "Would I get another set?" You bet - I still don't see anything comparable out there 2 years later. Bluetooth or other wireless connection is nice, but the physical attachment means these speakers rarely get separated, and the USB cable means never having to deal with batteries. I just wish I could find them on sale again - what a deal that was!

I'll make this simple and quick. I was looking for z-2300s online as speakers for my projector. z-2300s are the 2.1 'version' of this system, though they are different and of a lower quality generally, albeit much cheaper. 5.1 is better than 2.1 for movies, but I always say "quality over quantity," and I was on a budget.I was about to be on my way to Austin to pick some up for seventy-five bucks (craigslist), and I went onto the website one last time before I left, and someone had just posted these, lightly used for under a year, for two-hundred bucks. It was beyond my decided budget, but how could I refuse? These are "computer speakers" I guess. They are made by logitech and have a 3.5mm in (as well as optical and coax). But these don't look or sound like what we think of when one says the words "computer speakers." They are quality a cut above, and I'd say they're worth about whatever you're willing to pay for them. Which brings me to my next point:IF YOU WANT THESE SPEAKERS CHEAP, HERE'S HOW TO GET THEM:1)check craigslist for local listings. These are a top-selling product, so people in your area own them and may be selling them. This is the cheapest way to get them, but you have to get kind of lucky.2)go to google dot com and click the 'shopping' tag up top, by images, maps, videos, etc. That will search dozens of sites and quote the best prices for you. On amazon right now, these are being sold for $999. Here's part of the list I got from google shopping, which updates daily:359.99376.20400.63403.99419.99422.143) search for 'coupon codes' for the website you pick. Often, you will find codes online that give you some percentage or dollar amount off, or free shipping, if you enter the code into a code bar while you place your order. These tips work for all items, of course.Etcetera.Now for the review:Sound: 4.5/5The sound won't disappoint you. I am an audiophile to some degree, certainly more perceptive and picky than most, and I can tell you that these are excellently performing speakers. Even for music: excellent. There are better, but trust me, you don't want to pay for them. The sound will very likely be, if you aren't into audio, the best home theater system you've ever heard. This subwoofer kills it. It's not the tightest sub I've ever heard, but it's VERY BIG, it's VERY LOUD, and it can handle VERY LOW frequencies. My standards are high, and that's why I'm telling you it isn't perfect. It's only damn good.Features and Design: 5/5-The stands of the speakers swivel in such a way to make the speakers wall-mountable. Brilliant design.-Remote control? Thank you very much!-Of course, you can also adjust all of the settings from the receiver if you wish. It's a very pretty stand-up receiver with a small backlit screen, and it hooks into the subwoofer through a vga cable.-Stereo 2x mode: This is a really cool setting. On audio that is simple stereo or mono, for which the two side satellites would usually be omitted, the front R/L speakers are cloned and sent to the side speakers. That is to say that if you were listening to, say, an audiobook, you could get the voice to come from all five satellites at once. Wonderful.-Adjustable directionality of center speaker.-Removable wires, unlike the z-2300. You would expect it from a system at this price, but it isn't common for computer speakers, so I figured I'd mention it.-It's a very pretty system.CONS:I have to go out on a limb here - there really aren't any salient cons to speak of.-The wire for the side speakers might be too short than you'd want. Each wire is approximately 12 feet long. So running them up the ceiling or through a wall is out of the question. If they aren't long enough for you, just replace the wires.I honestly can't think of any other. Maybe the price is a con because it's relatively high, but how could it not be?I couldn't be more thrilled about the system.

External hardware quality:The speakers seem to overall be of good quality for this price range. Nothing feels particularly cheap or flimsy. However, the cords are rather short, so you will need an extender for them if you want to put them in anything larger than a small room. It also comes with a 3-way 3.5mm to two-way RCA adapter, a convenient addition. 5/5Looks:The design is subtle overall, but I find the gray and black, dual-driver satellite design to be rather good looking. Especially when you consider that this system is only $60. 4/5Sound quality:This system, while good for its price, has only average audio quality. The mids are nicely developed, but the highs are weak and indistinct. Additionally, the bass, especially the mid-bass, is FAR too powerful, even with the sub woofer volume knob turned all the way down. Men's voices in movies have a strange low-end boom that is definitely not natural and bass lines dominate any song being played. This issue is compounded by some pretty severe "boomy-ness" problems with the sub. However, blocking the bass reflex port by plugging it or pushing it against a hard surface like a wall fixes 90% of this issue, so it seems to be a poorly-designed port at fault here. An equalizer can fix most of the frequency balance but not clarity issues, which are not actually very bad at all for a 5.1 system at this price. Considering this system's drawbacks, I would say it is best suited for movies and video games where its loud bass can actually have a very nice effect. Audiophiles should look elsewhere. (Absolute rating): 2/5, (For the price): 5/5Conclusion: The sound quality won't impress audiophiles, but works well with movies and video games. For $60 you would be hard-pressed to find a better 5.1 system. Overall rating: 5/5

I like the idea of being able to connect multiple items, especially my smartphone, and this one certainly looks stylish. The flexibility of using it with your computer or television is a nice feature, too. But with the size of the subwoofer you'd expect this speaker to have some decent bass - which it doesn't.Setup is very easy. The connections are all on the back of the subwoofer and are clearly labeled. The bright red cords really stand out - which can be great if you're looking for them amidst the tangle of other cords or distractingly bad if you can see them from the couch. Some cords seem more than sufficiently long (the cord for the volume control and the iPhone cord) while the cords to the 'satellite' speakers aren't long enough. The volume control is very simple - just twist it to turn the speakers on and keep twisting to increase the volume. (Please note that there's no "remote" for volume control - just a bright red cord.) There is a tiny wheel-dial on the back for the bass, although no diagram on the controller to indicated which way for more or less bass. My biggest problem - and honestly, I'm easy to please - is that there isn't ENOUGH bass. I couldn't hear any difference with a television program and had to put some music on to find which direction was more and which was less. Even then, it's nowhere near as good as a 20 year old cheap 2 speaker-stereo system I've been using. On the other hand, I have to admit the sound is surprisingly clean and clear. The *quality* is very good and I heard a lot of detail I'd missed before. As several others have mentioned, the volume is a bit lacking, but my issue was with the bass. It might be that it's a much *cleaner* sounding bass free from the usual distortion (I'm not a sound expert) but it just felt unsatisfying.EDIT 12/11/12: After using this for a couple more months I've decided that the bass is actually very "clean and clear" as I said above, and that this is the strength of this system. It's not the distortion heavy bass I've so often heard with other entertainment and surround-sound systems, but it took me a little while to get used to it. So, I'm bumping my review up to 4 stars with that in mind.

I had these speakers for almost two years and bought them back when they were $300. For the price back then they were amazing. Really loud and as good of sound as you can get for a $300 price tag. They lasted just short of two years - by two weeks actually - when the amp went out and there was a constant buzzing noise coming from all 5 speakers. Lucky for me I had two weeks left on my warranty and am getting a full refund. Logitech no longer makes these and wanted to give me a new Z906 system instead...NO WAY! I wouldn't have any warranty left for one, and that is a crap product from what I've been reading. A 10" sub down to a 8" and a smaller amp with reliability issues. The Z-5500's was a great system at $300 but not for $1000, what it's going for now. If you're thinking about paying $1000 for these speakers stop right now. Don't do it!! For that money you can get something wayyyy better if you do your research. I started reading audiophile forums and put together my own PC speaker system using professional grade Tannoy 501A studio monitors with the amps built into the speakers. The sound far exceeds any pre-built plug and play pc speaker system out there. Match them with a GOOD subwoofer and an external soundcard or DAC (digital audio converter,) and you will never want pc speakers again. You can build a system people will be envious of and will put to shame the old Z-5500.Logitech's customer service is a pain to work with. First they said they could replace the entire Z-5500 so i said okay. I sent them my old system and once they got it they sent me ONE small replacement speaker...that was it. A tiny box with one single speaker...what was I suppose to do with that? I was pissed. Someone over in India is retarded so I sent it back and told them give me a refund once they then said I could only get a Z906 instead. They did pay for shipping however. All in all, a decent company and product but not for this price.

I have had this system for over a year now, and it's still FANTASTIC. Great sound, simple setup, excellent price. I would however like to point out the few aspects to the design that irritate me- not deal breakers by any means, these are EXTREMELY minor things so stay with me here- but the point of a review is providing helpful feedback- so here we go.1. The input: There is only ONE type of input and most devices only output 2.0 signal. Admittedly they do send an RCA>3.5mm adapter for the main channel, but the reason you buy any 5.1 system is to (brace yourselves) GET 5.1 SOUND! There's no optical input which is understandable for construction cost reasons, but still inconvenient to anyone looking to connect a game console or blu-ray player to it.2. Matrix: Useful sometimes, (fine for gaming, but distracting for movies and music) but since its brains weren't designed to accurately separate 2.0 input signal to 5.1 output, when Matrix is on the rear channels sound a bit tinny and distort/cut out VERY SLIGHTLY- like 1-3% distortion/noise. Still not a deal breaker. (also Logitech makes a 2 plug RCA>3 plug 3.5mm adapter that duplicates the L&R channel signal and sends it to the rears as well- look around, it's worth buying)3. The "remote": The cable is irritating. At 6' long it gives you enough cable that you can usually figure out some way to put the remote within reach of wherever you need it. But. This by definition means that you'll have six feet of HEAVY DUTY CABLE extending out in front of the system. Which makes it a bit of a tripping hazard, so just be cognizant of where you put your feet.4. Speaker cable lengths: The rears especially are too short in my opinion. I have it set up in my bedroom, and though it's not small (about 12x14) my options were either- I could tape down the cable to the rear left speaker (which looks terrible but prevents tripping when using the doorway) OR buy RCA extension cables and route the cord, along with the other rear channel cable, all the way around the room on the opposite wall. I chose the latter option and it works great. So in conclusion, GREAT SYSTEM- seriously, I can't stress that enough- sounds beautiful, has some real kick (bass is impressive despite the small sub) and is easy enough to configure and use that anyone that can operate a light switch should have no trouble, but if for whatever reason you can't live without an optical input, or lack the coordination necessary to avoid tripping over the single inconveniently placed remote cable on the floor, then these might be real issues... For everyone else I would recommend you BUY IT.

Ok so I'm a huge Logitech supporter but not biased. The moment something of theirs doesn't deserve a good review they won't receive it. but until then.! here i go! me and my family watched a movie on the speakers (plugged up to my laptop of course) last night and we heard the movie very loud and clear in both the living and dining room and that was only 50-75% turned up. in my room by myself these speakers can be turned up to 10 out of 100 and still seem too loud. great great speakers.con: not so long cord. well i cant truly label this as a con since its also a pro that it wont hang everywhere and that it clips to my laptop but last night when i wanted the speaker to move somewhere else in the room, of course it wouldnt bulge. but i then discovered it didnt have to since it was so loud.!______________________________________________________________________________________________________________Update.!: 3/19/2013It does weigh down your laptop a bit. so when i try to just close my screen half way, it closes all the way. And when i try to lean my screen back quite a bit, it falls back the rest of the way. my laptop was brand new, a dell bought from amazon nothing short of a few weeks before this speaker so it's not the laptop. so be sure to be careful with your screen and remove the speaker once it's not needed anymore. this has only become a problem when ive fallen asleep with my laptop on my bed and i'd wake up (wild sleeper) and see that i'd knocked my screen back or forward.

I spent hours researching different speaker systems and these came out on top. I have a lot of experience with speakers because I am a DJ. I own/have owned the whole gambit from powered KRK Rokit speakers to old JBL Towers made in the late 80's, so I am very particular when it comes to my speakers. There are no draw backs from these speakers, especially for the price.* I mainly just use the Left and Right front speakers with the subwoofer. Basically a 2.1 setup, but they don't make the 2.1 in this version anymore.Listening to music...I have these hooked up to my PC with a standard sound card (just the stock one attached to my motherboard) and love the sound. I listen to LOTS of varying types of music (rap, classical, dubstep, electro, EDM, rock, pop, etc.) because I am a DJ and they handle every low, mid, and high very well. The subwoofer is more than strong enough for what I use them for.Gaming...These are great for gaming. I mainly use them for SC2 and PC games, but I have hooked them up to my PS3 for Battlefield 3 and MW: Black Ops 2. Both are great.Watching movies....These are great for watching movies as the dialogue is very crisp and the booming subwoofer really adds punch to action movies. I never find myself adjusting the volume during the coarse of a movie to account for quieter dialogue parts and booming action sequences, this sound system handles all scenes wonderfully.Added bonuses....The positioning of the volume knob, ON/OFF switch, and headphone jack on the actual speaker (Front Right) is incredibly convenient! This means, once you get the subwoofer where you want it, you never have to get on your hands and knees to adjust anything on the ground or from behind your desk. The cords are all great length as well.5 Star for sure.

For the size of these the sound quality is OK, just not a lot of it. Plugged them in and opened my iTunes and played the first one that caught my eye, Abracadabra by the Steve Miller Band. I figured that would be a good one to check them out with since it has a broad range of sound in it. The highs are fairly sharp while the bass comes through good, overall I was surprised with the performance for the size of them. There are a few things that could be improved though. First of all I was surprised to see that the speakers don't have any kind of cover over the front of them at all. I've never seen any speakers, especially of this size and that are supposed to be portable, with no protection over the speaker. The center of the speaker is very vulnerable on these and won't last very long unless you are very careful of how you use and handle them. Another thing with them is the amount of space they take. I don't know about other people and how they use their laptop computer but the small table that I use for mine has limited space and there just isn't room for them. There's one similar on Amazon, Lifetime Personal Folding Table 30"L x 20"W, but mine is only 28"L x 18"W and with my 17" Dell Studio laptop on it there's only enough room for a mouse pad beside it. I would suggest that they make some sort of clip on hanger on the back of them so they can be mounted on the top edge of the screen of a laptop like the external web cams are. That would get them up and out of the way. I'm going to see what I can make with some brass welding rod and a couple of small squeeze clamps. Then there are the wires. With the plugin for the speaker/headphone jack and the other for the USB plugin and the one connecting the two, that's a lot of extra wires to get tangled with all the others. But, there's no other way to do them, yet, and I do like the USB plug to power them. That beats the usual transformer block plugin that needs another space on your powerstrip that's probably already crowded enough. I have just noticed one other thing that could be changed. There is no way to disconnect the two speakers from each other. There's one wire about 30" long connecting the two together. Which makes it a bit awkward when taking them with your laptop while traveling. It would be a lot easier if you could unplug the one speaker and wrap all the wires together with the other one for transporting them. With my music playing over them as I write this although they don't have a lot of volume they have enough to sound pretty good close up. They do get a little rattly with some distortion when there's heavy bass which is what I expected because of their size. While they are not anything as good as Bose speakers are, for the price, I think they are a pretty good deal. If you want something for movies on on your laptop or music while you work on your laptop and your on a budget, I recommend these.Up Date 4-28-12 Well, just what I was afraid of. First the left speaker started fading, then sound from both started to degrade. Now the left speaker doesn't produce anything above a faint whisper and the right sounds real bad, like a speaker with a hole it trying to play too much bass. I was afraid these little things wouldn't last very long and I was right. So save your money and put a little more with what you would spend on these and get some better ones.

I've spent TOO many thousands of dollars on audio equipment over the past four decades, always looking for something "that gets voices right". Audio equipment has improved, and today it is possible to get superb reproduction of voices from speakers costing as little as $200.However, the reproduction of voices from typical computer speakers has remained terrible. A few can do a decent job with female voices, but none can reproduce the depth and power of a Johnny Cash...until now.The Logitech X-140 speakers surprised me by passing the "Johnny Cash" test...it sounds like he is standing right in front of you. However, the deepest bass and the high treble (cymbals) lacked impact. I turned up the bass/tone control on the Logitech's to about 90% of the maximum setting. Then I plugged in my phone, turned on Pandora Radio, and turned on my EQ app. I boosted the deep bass to bring out the bass drum and bass guitar and boosted the high treble to bring out the cymbals. At that point, the sound quality was equal to the best of today's $200 speakers (at low and moderate volumes). But, these ARE just computer speakers. They sound best at a low to moderate volume level with the listener sitting two or three feet away. They won't fill a large room, and they won't work for a party. If the volume is boosted too high, the sound becomes muddy, then audible distortion results...keep them at a moderate volume. The "build quality" of the Logitech looks like they cost double their low price. A heavy duty cord connects the two speakers, which have their own sturdy built-in stands. The power cord has a standard AC plug, so there is no heavy and bulky power "brick" to carry around. A cord is provided to plug into the headphone jack of your phone, tablet, computer, or television, so no extra cords are required (except for computers that lack a headphone jack. The beefy build makes them heavier than they look. These are NOT speakers that you carry around in your laptop bag. They will deliver their best performance placed on a shelf, desk or table, as close as possible to the height of your ears. They sounded terrific on bookshelves four feet above the floor. My nephew has some "mega-buck" Bose computer speakers that are similar in size to the Logitech X-140 speakers. Although the Bose speakers are very good, the Logitech X-140 speakers were clearly superior at reproducing voices in an accurate and natural way...making them a "Best Buy" for desktop computer speakers.

I also just ordered a new i7 computer and was thinking, for speakers, I'd really like the ones on my older Vista machine(X-140). But since I'm not retiring the Vista machine, I'd still have to get another set for either the old PC or the New PC. Trouble is, I couldn't find a pair anywhere in the shops around my town. I sort of assumed that they had been discontinued. I couldn't find the combination of quality and low price I was looking for and turned to Amazon.com.Whoa! I found the X140's on the first page of my first search for computer speakers! I didn't take long to make up my mind, so I snagged a pair. I mean they were what I was comparing the competition against and they were roughly $10 chepaer than what I paid for in a shop. So why not?Why I like them:* Pretty good sound for the size, No, they can't reproduce the concert hall, but I've heard worse, and the 'cheapie' $10 PC speakers just can't cut it for me any more. They do the job for casual computer use and casual music listening. Spending 2X as much for speakers over the cheapies, returns more than 2X's the performance I think.* Small footprint, while they are about 9 inches tall, the base is roughly a 3X4 inch rectangle. They don't take up much desk real estate.* They seem reasonably well built, they don't feel cheap.* They look good. As a photographer I like good looking stuff. They are sleek and elegant, and modern looking without resorting to flashing lights and 'Buck Rogers' visual effects.* An On/Off volume knob with a power on light. I like to know when something is on and sucking power. I also like to control the volume or even choose to go without sound on occasion (I find Civilization III sound and music annoying!). Then too, I'm also of the generation of users who naturally looks for a control knob over looking to the keyboard for this sort of volume control. We are all victims of our upbringing!* A tone control knob. A somewhat narrow range of adjustment, but better than no adjustment at all which is what many speaker sets offer in this price range.* An easy to reach headphone connector and an easy to reach Aux. input connector. How expensive would it be to add this to ALL sound equipment? I would welcome government interference in this one area, make 'em do it! But Logitech would already be covered with this set. (of Course, one could also ask why the computer manufacturers fail to put them on the front of PCs where they belong - but I'll get off my soapbox.)There is nothing negative I can think of regarding these speakers. They are excellent casual duty speakers. They are reliable and inexpensive. You could do worse.

Let me preface this with another lesson learned: I bought my mother an Acer Aspire (E1) for this Christmas and the only real flaw we have found in this wireless laptop was that the speakers were probably some of the worst ones we have ever heard in our life. The internal volume inside the built-in speakers is such a low quality that even sitting right smack in front of the laptop, it barely ecks out any discernible and respectable sound at all. You actually find yourself leaning towards the laptop, closer and closer to hear ANYTHING! Okay, now the Logitech stereo speakers (Z110): Holy WOW! My mom, aunt and family friend were present when I hooked these USB powered speakers (not completely wireless but better than outlet powered ones) to my mom's Acer. The second it was hooked up, it sounded like Jerry Seinfeld was right there next to us in the room! (they were watching an interview w/ Jerry Seinfeld online). My husband was in the next room and actually said, "is somebody else in the room with you guys?" No, I am not joking and/or making up a story. And no, this is not the effect of not hearing good speakers then suddenly hearing great speakers. These are some of the best speakers I have ever heard for $13.00! Even beyond the price, they are really, really good! If I heard these speakers for the first time and didn't know the price, I would of thought they cost at least $60.00! Unless you are really picky, an extremist and/or audiologist, I would say go ahead and buy...you won't be disappointed!

Don't know if someone covered laptops, so I thought I would save the next person the trouble. It has three 1/8" computer audio cords that are color coded [green, orange, black] These three colors cover the rear & sub, the front speakers and the center. They are made for desktop computers with installed sound cards. Well guess what?!?! Most laptops don't have a nice sound card that has three 1/8" computer sound plugs. You only get the little green audio input.I bought the "Logitech 5.1 Game Console Adapter" which is only like $7 on ebay. It changes [green, orange, black] to regular stereo plugs. Then you need an adapter I already have, which is just stereo plugs (red/white) that adapts to one green input (1/8" computer green audio input). Then you need a single green to green cord and a regular stereo cord (red/white to red/white). HAHAHAHA ya I know, pretty stupid that you have to do this right? It's amazing that they don't have something for $5-$10 that converts [green, orange, black] to [one green 1/8" computer audio cord].Cross my fingers that it works because I'm using these speakers for Lake Powell houseboat in 1 week!! (I'll update later if it has problems) I didn't know I would have to buy these and then another pricey adapter, I thought logitech was master of connectivity!?! Anyways, I just need to duplicate the sound on all 5 surround speakers (Stereo sound out of 5+1 speakers). Your other option is something nicer like: $32 "StarTech.com 7.1 USB Audio Adapter External Sound Card" here on Amazon, which is what I'll get next if this one doesn't work, but it better!! If you have the time and money, definitely buy the Startech adapter, totally worth not hassling with cords. I just already had the other cords is all and I'm being cheap because I need to save my moola for Lake Powell. I have 5.1 surround sound coming out of my ears, I don't need it on my laptop too. Just lots of sound for THE PARTY!!!!!

For speakers in general, Logitech is always a good bet. They make quality speakers and keep the price very reasonable. These speakers, in particular, have a few nice features that make them great. The speakers themselves can stand upright, or the bottom can swivel around so you can wall-mount them with just a screw. No hassle, and they still look good on the wall. They also come with a control panel for volume, bass, power on/off, 'matrix' (surround sound) on/off, and a headphone jack. The bass control was particularly nice for me because sometimes my music is heavy on bass, and I don't want to annoy my neighbors. The headphone jack is also nice, as it allows you quick access to plug in your headphones, and the sound comes out of your headphones instead of the speakers. The wires are not very long, but this set isn't meant for a giant room, it's meant for an office or a bedroom. Even in a bigger room, the sound can get more than loud enough without degrading much (not until you get ridiculously loud is it really noticeable), you just don't quite get the full surround sound effect without putting the back speakers behind you. Either way, they sound great and you get nice surround sound in a compact package. This won't compare to the Bose systems, but at this price point you wouldn't expect it to. The sub is loud, the speakers are clear, it all looks nice, and the price tag won't make your wallet cry.Overall: Great choice for PC speakers, I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking to step up to surround sound in a small or medium-sized room.

I hooked these up to our flatscreen television and our Wii, and they sound great on both. There's much better bass, and the sound is distinct and not muddled. Up to that point we'd just run sound from the television speakers, and the quality with these is clearly superior. Watching our favorite television programs and films, details were apparent that I'd not noticed - background noises, birds chirping, wind, and the like, that had all seemed to blend together before. It made me realize how much we'd been missing. One thing we're still missing, however, is some serious volume. These speakers sound good, but they don't really pack much of a punch. With 40 Watts, I expected more. As a matter of fact, I compared using these to using my television speakers - back and forth several times - and they don't get any louder. Every once in a while I'd like to watch a movie with a booming soundtrack and blow out the room. These aren't the speakers to do it with.Otherwise, I wish this came with a remote. There's a small power and volume control - you spin a wheel, it clicks on, and you keep spinning it gets louder. My tv remote only controls the volume on its onboard speakers, so to change volume with this I need to stand up and do it. Yeah, I know, not such a big deal, but sometimes things get suddenly loud and it's nice to be able to turn it down quickly. There's two smaller speakers that I place on a cabinet below the television and a big round bass speaker I place on the floor in the middle. The connecting wire they come with is red, which might not always fit a location, but it's mostly hidden away with our cabinet so I don't mind.

Alright, well I've had a Panasonic 5.1 with tower front speakers and wireless speakers w/stands for rear speakers, and I believe an 8 or 10 inch sub, and I loved that system, but it was never quite enough for me even though I payed just over half a grand for the sucker. Well now I use that Panasonic for my xbox360 and dvd's, but I wish I had known that this system would be so distinctly better before I had bought and then set up that Panasonic those years ago... I honestly feel I've wasted money and time putting up with sound when I could've had this system at a significantly better price and been MUCH happier with the sound quality. Let's get right down to actually reviewing this system though..Before I list the pros and cons, let me say that I consider myself a soundfreak, but I am no audiophile, and while I've owned my fair share of sound systems and headsets and tested just as many sound systems, I am no expert, this is just from my point of view.Pros1)Controllable level of surround sound2)Controllable level of the center speaker3)Controllable level of subwoofer4)Easy use of the main console5)VERY distinct sound quality, and while some people complain of the subwoofer being "too boomy", the system makes up for it by utilizing 3" full range drivers in each surround speaker which can actually give you the distinct rich kick sound of rock music, while you feel the kick from the subwoofer.6)One thing I hated about my Panasonic is that when you would turn it up loud, the subwoofer would drown everything out, and that simply isn't the case with this sound system. Each surround speaker can hold it's own and still produce very distinct notes with the subwoofer pounding your chest in, which to me is a HUGE bonus.7)The rear speakers produce a good level of sound and quality which for me is also a huge deal because some surround systems I've either owned or tested have had very weak rear speaker volume level and quality.8)The sound with this system is very rich, you will not be disappointed with clarity even at the highest levels, or with the surround sound. My advice would be to try out the song, "Aint No Rest For The Wicked, by Cage The Elephant", that really showcases the quality of the surround sound and the rear speakers.Cons1)The subwoofer is boomy like other reviews have mentioned, but if you're looking for a 5.1 system in the price range that this is offered in (or even at some higher price ranges), you will not find a better deal than this system.2)It's not a component system (separate tweeters and midrange drivers), and so you do lose a little bit of clarity that other systems can offer you.3)It doesn't have an onboard equalizer which I'm sure some people find as a necessity, but for me that's not a big deal because it's out of the box sound is more than enough to do the trick.4)The speaker mounts don't come off of the speakers, and while I know other reviews have mentioned this, it can't hurt to mention it again. This can also create a challenge for wall-mounting speaker users (like myself), because it's very tough to drill holes for these speakers when your drill barely has room to operate. My advice if you're going to wall-mount would be to use Gorilla Hooks from the infomercials that we all hated seeing.. They actually do the trick quite nicely, and they are MUCH easier to do then screwing them into a wall stud.5)There isn't an adjustable frequency response range on the subwoofer, which I know is something stupid to gripe about but it was a nice feature of one of my other sound systems.Tips for Wall-Mounting and basic set up1)Like I listed earlier, use Gorilla Hooks for wall mounting, save yourself some time and effort.2)Mount the rear speakers a bit higher than the front speakers, this will create a distinct surround sound for you and give you the best quality.3)Make sure that you have enough wire (if you'd like it to look professional) to either hide the wires or make them look uniform and straight. For me it's not a big deal, but to other that can be a big deal. Also the good thing is that this wire is adjustable in length because of the way that Logitech put them, and that will come in handy I'm sure for some people.4)There is a note in the package, but just so you're forewarned, the subwoofer isn't magnetically shielded, so you'll want about 2 feet between it and any other electrical equipment, so visualize if you'll actually have enough space for the subwoofer in the first place (because it is a large sub), and secondly if you'll have enough space to give it an exclusive spot in the room. For me this required a re-work of my rooms set up, but after hearing the quality of this system, I'd do it all over again no questions asked.5)Make sure that you have a decent sound card that will do this system justice, otherwise you would probably be better off just getting a different possibly cheaper system (if you can find one..), because you won't be getting the full quality out of this system. If you're

If you're frustrated by the anemic sound levels of your Windows PC, your built in speakers may not be working at their true maximum volume.Despite the volume slider by the system clock or Media Player may be set to "100%", the manufacturer may have constrained your speakers output within the audio driver for whatever reason they deem. IBM/Lenovo caps their laptop speakers at 60% capacity supposedly to prevent the owner from "blowing and damaging the speaker" as if it was even possible with less than 1 watt of power.Download the free VLC media player to test your speakers true performance. VLC's volume bar slides to 200% volume output.(drop down to the comment of this review for download link since Amazon filters web URL's in reviews)You'll quickly determine whether your computer manufacturer is constraining you or had good reasons to cap your speakers max power. If your speaker sounds scratchy and unsatisfactorily at 200%, then you'll know for sure whether you need external speakers. You should avoid doing the same thing with external speakers since they're measured in watts and could be damaged if overmaxed.VLC is absolutely free, no one nor myself benefits from the downloading and usage of it and my recommendation is just sincere honest advice based in experience.VLC is freely capable of playing DVD's and even BluRay's without the usual software cost you pay for WinDVD and other movie decoders.

*Sigh* I wanted these speakers to work so badly. After reading all of the stellar reviews, I couldn't believe my ears when I plugged these in, especially considering they are much larger than expected. No matter how I adjust the tone knob, the sound quality just isn't that great. The quality of sound is such a huge disappointment--I don't hear any depth in the music like I do with earbuds, the built in speakers on my MBP, or even my 7-year-old portable (Logitech!) iPod speakers. I won't return these just because of the hassle of it all and because they were so inexpensive compared to other speakers. But ugh, not fun. Even with the speakers directed right at me it always felt like the sound was headed into other directions of the room--I understand the desire for the "surround sound" experience, but it's so irritating to have to be blasting the music so loudly (overall) for it to be of adequate volume in your direction--I won't even use the speakers if my roommate is around. Not to mention that for those exceptionally quiet songs that I have on my computer (like the intros of some classical pieces), these speakers can't get very loud at all (and yes, that's even when I have my computer sound settings maxed out)--others I've had in the past could blare practically anything with just the slightest crank in the knob. If I could do it all again, I would most certainly spend a few extra dollars and look elsewhere. I expect I'll probably only get a use out of these for playing songs when hosting parties (in all fairness for songs with "regular" volumes, they can crank them up extremely loud). Overall, I would not recommend these speakers to anyone.

I chose the Logitech X-140 speakers over similar but smaller Logitech 2.0 speakers because of their size. They are large enough to give a very decent and acceptable soundand still small enough to fit in the space space where my older, now defunct speakers were. There is another feature that I found very useful: there is no power transformer block to plug into the power strip. The transformer block is inside the left (and therefore slightly heavier) speaker.Electric power connection is with an ordinary small plug. This is very convenient.Installation was very simple.Just set them where you want them, plug in the power cord, thenconnect the cable into your computer.Finished.They worked instantly.I'm very satisfied with the sound. The volume is more than adequate for me. There is also a Tone adjustment.I turned it to maximum for a clearer base response. The stereo separation is perfect. The speakers will perform differently depending on what they are on, where you place them, how far apart they are, and the room itself. For my particular use, these speakers are more than adequate. As I write this, I am listening to a Bach keyboard concerto, and the sound is very loud and very good.Delivery by Amazon was very fast - two days. For all things considered I gave it 5 stars.Logitech makes excellent computer accessories. This is a good buy.

I had a great 2.1 Harman/Kardon stereo desktop system with a large powered subwolfer for a long time. Last year, I added a creative 5.1 sound card to my PC build which allowed me to get the most out of my 2.1 system. This Fathers Day, my wife asked what I wanted and I knew it was time to upgrade to a 5.1 surround sound system. The Logitech X-540 system got great reviews, had the watts I wanted and was the right price. Set up went smoothly and after a reboot, I was able to adjust my creative 5.1 sound card software to get the most out of the new system. My first impressions are mostly positive. The pros are:- The sound is crisp and clean which I thought tinny at first until I adjusted my sound card graphics equalizer. I'll let the sound pros on the other reviews discuss the details. Overall, I like the sound quality which is just right for a PC system. As other reviews have noted, the bass is also good. I'm still playing with the frequency crossover on my sound card software so I don't have it dialed in quite yet.- The rotating speaker stands are genus; you can rotate to stand on the desk or rotate to hang on the wall. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the center speaker fit snugly on the monitor and isn't in danger of falling off.- The speakers appear to be well constructed and don't buzz when you dial up the volume.- I really like the wired remote which allows you to adjust the volume, turn on/off, adjust the bass and to use a matrix button for PC's that lack a 5.1 surround sound card. My previous system had the power switch on the subwolfer and was hard to get too; most of the time, I left the power on.- I like the fact that Logitech uses RCA cords rather than speaker wire for each speaker. The cons are:- As other reviews have noted, the cords are too short. I planned ahead for the satellite speakers and purchased a 25' extension cable to hang the rear right/left speakers on the opposite wall but the front right/left speaker cords should be 8' not 6'. The center wire was 8' and just right.- There isn't a speaker grill on the bottom of the subwolfer. Yes, the subwolfer sits on the floor and is downward firing. However, if you should pick the subwolfer up to move it for some reason, there is the tendancy to reach too far under it and poke the speaker with a finger.Overall Impressions:- I think many of the negative reviews for this system are because they don't have a 5.1 sound card. I wouldn't have bought a surround sound system without one. I moved my 2.1 system to my wife's PC which doesn't have a sound card and it isn't the same.- I don't think I would use this system for a TV (no special reason just a preference). While this system works great for a PC, I prefer a larger system for my TV. I currently have an older, more powerful Sony shelf surround sound system that works great with my directv receiver, Wei, and DVD player.- Once I hang the rear speakers on the opposite wall, I hope to be able to enjoy a true surround sound experience (still waiting for my extension cables). Even without the speaker separation, the system still sounds great.

I bought this speaker set to replace an old one that was dying, as well as to upgrade to surround sound. The sound quality is pretty good. It's not audiophile-level quality, but is better than I expected in this price range. I also like the control pod, which is a must in a modern speaker set. The pod also has a headphone jack, but I end up using the one on the computer itself. If I'm playing a game and have it configured for 5.1, the center channel doesn't get mixed into the stereo that the headphones use. If I plug into the computer directly, it mixes the center channel into both L and R.Cables are plenty long enough for my use, which is a desktop speaker system. I would not use this for a TV unless it were in a small space. Besides, you're better off with a real audio receiver and speakers in that case.It does NOT have a digital audio input. It does, however, include three stereo cables (front L/R, read L/R, and center/sub). So you would be hard-pressed to find something other than a computer to plug this in to.Even with the minor nits to pick I give this five stars, simply because I bought it for a specific purpose and it excels at that purpose.

I got these expecting reasonable dynamic range and some bass response. The units in this pair have tweeters and a separate all purpose speaker on bottom. These were bigger than I expected, but that's forgivable due to the multiple speakers in each satellite, and they still have a small footprint as their size is in their height.PROS:~Big volume potential. I've never really cranked these because I use them at work, but they have performed well with no distortion.~In and Out ports on the right satellite in between the volume and tone knobs.CONS:~If you listen to anything bass heavy, expect the low end to be cut out. I listened to a boiler room set by pinch on soundcloud at work, then listened to it again in my car which has a slightly up scale audio system in it, and was blown away by all the bass I was missing. However, you won't be able to get much more bass in this price range.~My office is on the 11th floor, and the small amp, (or some other mechanism) amplifies radio signals, and so tejano is always coming through my speakers at that barely audible, highly annoying volume. I assume it is because I am up about 130 feet in the air, but it may be due to some slight lemonification, or perhaps just bad design. You can't hear it when music is playing, but it's still hurting my overall experience with these. If you plug headphones in it's even more audible.OVERALL:For less than $30 and with Prime Shipping, I have to recommend these if you are looking to replace your dusty dell stock speakers from 2004. If you want something better, you need to go to the $80 range at least.

I was impressed with the speaker hardware of my current laptop, but after listening to these speakers hooked up through the headphone jack I realized despite how awesome the hardware the laptop can smash into a small form factor it cannot compete with regularly scaled speakers; driver diameter is still the master of performance and you can’t put 2-inch drivers on a laptop. The power and expression of these speakers beats any comparison to the best integrated laptop speakers and at the price there is no reason to avoid buying a pair if you have a desk or space that you “dock” your laptop to regularly.I can’t even grip about the cable placement, one speaker handles the AC power where the other handles the stereo uplink and there is a signal/power umbilical between both. Both speakers are fairly equal in weight and are stable on uneven surfaces (no rattling). For the price, these speakers are a freaking awesome augmentation to any integrated laptop audio system.

I'm using these as my desktop computer speakers. I use them for Skype calls in combination with my Logitech webcam/mic and they perform flawlessly. I also listen to music and am totally pleased with the sound quality: in this price range, I haven't heard anything better. They are far and away the best desktop speakers that I've ever bought. The sound is crisp, clear, with excellent stereo separation.I've seen some complaints posted here about bass and volume. Let's be clear: unless you buy a sub-woofer system, you're never going to get deep bass from small speakers. It's an unreasonable expectation, so don't complain about it. But the bass profile from these speakers is quite acceptable given their size. As for volume, on my Windows 8 PC, I have no trouble at all cranking these up to much louder levels than I would ever listen to them at. So my suggestion to the reviewers who weren't satisfied with volume level: check your mixer settings in your sound control app. If that doesn't help, your computer's sound card/chip may be malfunctioning, you may have a bad cable, it could be a number things. But these speakers are capable of plenty of volume.

I bought these just so I could hear my game sounds when I play on my computer - these are actually better than I was expecting. Seems to have a good balance and the sound is nice to listen to, not tinny or weak. I played a couple of songs and again, I'm very pleased with the quality of sound when listening to music. The size is fine, controls are very easy to reach being right on the front of the speaker. The audio cable was plenty long enough to reach from my computer on the floor up to the speakers on the desktop. The sound seems just as good when I use earbuds. Overall, I call these a very good buy and am very satisfied - except that now the disturbing sounds from the hostile mobs when I play Minecraft are very scary!

The Logitech Z553 is a nice looking system, the speakers and round sub have a modern look. The control unit is nicely weighted and won't slide off the desk. It controls on/off, the volume, and there is a small dial on the back near the cable that controls the sub volume. All cabling is bright red, definitely not stealthy but it looks nice. A nice feature is that the satellite speakers are independent of each other (there isn't a wire connecting the satellites with only one of them connecting to the sub. On this system both satellites connect to the sub.Sonically the system is decent for the price range. The bass is moderately muddy, and there isn't great separation in the mids and highs. One isn't going to blow their ear drums with this system! At 40 watts there isn't a lot of volume, but at max volume the speakers are moderated nicely so they don't overdrive and distort. On the computer I am driving it with a Creative X-Fi HD Titanium. Through the TV, it was just a direct connection. They are louder than the TV speakers and definitely have more bass. They could be good for someone with limited space that can't have or don't want a surround sound system.I compare these to my reference for this price range, the Klipsch Promedia 2.1, and the Logitech Z553 is lacking. The Klipsch has an 8" sub with 130 watts and is sonically far superior.

I purchased these speakers on sale for $60. The speakers have decent sound quality to put it fairly. The satellites lack depth and since there is no tweeter, don't expect sparkling highs. The subwoofer is better than I expected in terms of good sound at higher volumes. There is no crossover so you the subwoofer can be "buzzy" with frequencies that are right in between low and mid-range. On the plus side, the sub is not too "boomy" and hits cleanly. The sub can also hold the lowest of frequencies (30-60hz) in smaller rooms and sound very good.I would dock 1.5 stars from the 5 because of sound quality that is better with lower priced systems and my last point; The lack of magnetic shielding. This can be really annoying if it happens to you. It really is a gamble whether or not it will. There is a video on YouTube of someone who actually picks up radio signals, clearly, at lower volumes. That must be so annoying! Personally, I pick up interference from other sources in the my house. I'm not sure what it is, but something makes the speakers crackle/pop at lower volumes, which might be worse than radio signals to some people. It's NOT my computer. If it was, the crackle would get louder as I turn up the volume but, in fact, it becomes silent/unnoticeable. Also, my headphones sound just fine in the computer. If you really want good sounding speakers, consider Logitech's higher end models. If you want great sounding speakers, consider other brands, such as Klipsh's ProMedia 2.1 speakers. They have a either 2.5" or 3" mid-range AND a tweeter. I know, it's 2.1, but if you have the dough, you can buy two of them to make it a 4.2 channel system. Front left and right, rear left and right, two subs. Who really needs the center channel anyway if it's not a home-theater?If you're an audiophile or a wannnabe audiophile, consider purchasing a 5.1 or 7.1 channel AV receiver instead; buy some nice bookshelf speakers or even floor-standing speakers. Paradigm, Klipsch, and Polk Audio (my favorite listed first) are good places to start.

I was looking for a small, cheap set of speakers for my desk and these seemed to fit the bill.Upon opening the box, I was pleased with the build quality - the enclosures being made out of a very solid feeling white plastic. In the back of each speaker, they have a small indentation where you can wrap any spare cable length to keep things nice and clean. The only flaw here is that the length of cable that separates the two speakers is way too short, barely able to go on each side of my dual-monitor setup (I was hoping to have them ~4 feet apart).Setup is quite simple - plug in the two cables (USB for power, 3.5mm stereo for audio) and you're up and running. The USB cable is just for power and there are no drivers or software setup needed.Sound-wise, these speakers sound respectable at low volumes (I'm listening in an office setting). The highs are clear and crisp without being fatiguing. Mids come through but are a little muddled (I haven't tried higher volumes, so that may fix it). Lows are there enough for me to get the beat.Pros: Good sound for the price, build quality, setupCons: Cable length between speakers limit how they can be set up, speakers tend to sound better with a bit more separation.
