Purchased my Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 5.1 Digital Surround Sound speaker System back in July of 2007 with my computer system. Sounded pretty good (bass isn't the best)but I could live with it. After two years I started to have problems with the pod and then the system stopped working. I went to the Logitech web site and they said the site was down. It finally started to work and I sent a e-mail to Logitech and told them what was going on and never got a response. I had a computer tech check them out and he couldn't figure it out. I will never buy anything from Logitech again. There is NO customer service.

I have the first version of this product, the one without the 3.5mm jack on the back and the third button.Cons:-Such small speakers don't do bass very well.-Can't plug headphones into the speakers. Have to unplug speakers and then plug in headphones to get sound or reassign the output manually in Windows. (Only a problem with this version I assume.)-Can't get very loud in some programs.Pros:-Excellent sound. Can't be overstated. I've been using these things for months and am still surprised by the clarity of the sound they produce each time I turn them on.-Super Portable.-Simple as speakers will ever be.-Just plug them in and Windows automatically assigns them as the main output.

Most speakers have felt on the outside that collects dust I was surprised that this model has a hard plastic which was something I didn't read in the reviews on Amazon. Most of the other reviewers have summed it up when they said this is an excellent portable laptop speaker. Nice sound quality and plenty of volume. Could here it all over the house. Logitech excels again.

These have a high distortion rate - 10%... however for the price of $50 these are a great bargain. Nice deep bass. I have had them for almost 3 years and now the sub kind of broke. When the really deep notes play, it starts to rattle.

I did much research before deciding on this set of speakers for my notebook computer. I wanted something sturdy, compact, and with excellent sound quality. They met all my conditions and impressed me by being even nicer than I expected for the price. They are really top quality speakers! The carrying case is well made and will easily fit into most laptop carry bags along with the power cord and wireless mouse many folks want to fit in their bags. From the time I unzip my carry bag, I can have everything up and running in less than five minutes. Someone else had commented that the speakers had a very weak mesh on the front. Perhaps they did not have this set of speakers because these have a metal mesh that is very durable and would take some bad sort of accident to puncture. Sound quality is very good as is volume. I read in another review that the sound quality was poor above 80%. Mine would drive me out of the room at 80% so I have not been able to test that statement out. One other thing I really like about these speakers is that they do not require to be connected to power. They just run off the USB port. For the price of these speakers, I doubt you will find anything nicer.Added comment in February 2013:The speakers are still performing well after several years of steady use, travel, and even a few falls off the table. These are definitely quality speakers and well worth the price. Even several years later, I am still quite happy with them and would recommend them to anyone wanting an attractive, affordable, quality speaker for their laptop.

I bought this item because I have a moderate hearing loss and wanted more volume from my MacBook Pro. This item does not supply it. I guess it does improve the sound quality a bit, but that is not what I was after.

logitech z-5500 are probably one the the best speakers in the market. Even though prices for these speakers fluctuate it's worth the price. the woofers are quite the size but they sure deliver once heck of a boom. Overall, it's a great product and i recommend this to everybody

I like these speakers. I put on Pandoa radio with my Tomita station to give them a good testing. They passed with flying colors, except the bass end is a little tight. They would be excellent with a sub-woofer. Later I learned to ajust the tone on this speakers through the mixer, I boosted the bass and the result is very good. The bass is richer than before. No need for a sub-woofer now. I highly recommend these speakers.

this system is incredible. it will go as loud as you want it to and it will put out as much bass as you can handle...if you compare it other computer surround sound systems it, it reigns supreme. if you compare it to other home surround sound system it hold its own, but the only slight disadvantage when comparing it to home systems is that the sound separation is not quite up there with home systems but that understandble because it doesn't have a separately built receiver like a home system but thing system is well worth it.

I bought these for a basement audio surround system knowing that they worked better on a computer system. Used it once and even with matrix mode used on a non stereo source the back speakers didn't work. Kind of disappointed but I purchased an adaptor from Logitech for them and it is much better now. Logitech 970150-0403 5.1 Game Console Audio Adapter. It gives it a stereo sound but in no way does it work as a true surround sound but it does what I want it to do and sounds good to me. The adapter is very cheap if you shop around. I found it for $3.99 plus shipping but you cannot find it in stores or at least around where I live. Would I purchase this speaker system again, oh yeah. They do get very loud and have a good sound that doesn't sound tinny or raspy if set to high. The low cost other systems out there almost always include a cd player and power the speakers. I did not want that and I can connect these speakers to any audio out source that I use (cd player, vcr, tv). I just adjust the volume on the controller and it works great.

LOOKING FOR CHEAP BUT GOOD QUALITY 5.1 CHANNEL SPEAKERS? LOOK NO FURTHER THEN THESE OLD SPEAKERS. I THINK IT IS STILL THE BEST OUT THERE FOR THE QUALITY, PRICE, AND CONNECTIVITY. SURE IF YOU ARE PHONOPHILE YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT BUT FOR MOST PEOPLE WHO JUST WANT SOME 5.1 CHANNEL FOR THEIR FPS IT IS PRETTY GOOD.

This speaker system was purchased specifically for home theater and NOT for a computer sound system. After a great deal of research comparing traditional surround receivers and speaker sets, "surround in a box" systems, and the directly comparable Creative computer speaker system (by spec would be equally at home as a home theater surround system) I settled on this one.Based on reviews, either this Logitech or the Creative decoder/THX speaker set would have worked very well and sounded great. What it finally came down to was price. The only thing that gave me pause was the Creative decoder had more available inputs. I could've used an additional optical input (one for the Blu Ray, one for the TV) but it was much less expensive to and easy to put a simple manual Toslink switch Digital Audio Optical Toslink Selector Switch for Fiber Optic Connections (Silver) in than the extra cost for the Creative system. Further, this Logitech system is a much neater and cleaner installation with a single cable to the sub woofer containing the amplifier and outputs to the other 5 speakers rather than the multi connector box arrangement of the Creative system.So.... for LESS than $300 DELIVERED, I got a neat, clean, kick-a** surround system.Installation:Couldn't be easier. How many of us have struggled in a small space or cabinet to get the speaker cables for 5 or more speakers, sub, etc hooked up and then still try to keep it looking neat when pushed to final spot? NOT an issue with this. The decoder/control head needs only the optical input routed to it and the control cable routed to the sub woofer containing the amplifier and speaker connections. In my case the sub is in a relatively open spot making the hookup of the 5 speakers far easier than any system I have put in previously. One note; the control cable with the HD-15 connector is perhaps a little short for the most flexible placement of the sub woofer. I have read reports that it cannot be easily extended with a monitor extension cable. I did not need to extend so no issue in my case. I suspect problems came from those using HD-15 extension cables that did not pass through all pins. The speakers are readily shelf or wall mounted and use standard spring terminal connectors on both the amp outputs and speaker inputs allowing longer or upgraded speaker wires. End result: A neat and unobtrusive wife-friendly (no exposed wires) installation with little space taken on my media shelf.Setup:Simple and straightforward. It perhaps does not have all the hi-tech gee-whiz type of balancing utilities of other systems but there are plenty of easy to affect adjustments and my setup by ear has resulted in a spacious surround experience.Operation:Couldn't be simpler. Turn it on, adjust volume as needed, listen. That's it. The remote is small (but not TOO small), comfortable to use, and very simple. Buttons needed most are right there. The best of the remote is the direct access to center, surround, and sub woofer volumes. Since I've not yet found any two movies or TV shows balanced the same, it is extremely nice to quickly and easily change any of these levels to preference. Example: The recent Discovery HD Theater presentation of "Planet Earth" was heavily center channel weighed and was quickly altered to preference. Also, one can change sub woofer levels easily so late-night viewing doesn't annoy the neighbors (at least not so much).Sound:Logitech claims THX certification on this system. Since the metrics of such certification are not published so it isn't really known what you are getting with certification, one can only assume that, at least, THX will only allow their logo on something that sounds pretty dang good. And it does. I've seen reviews that suggest that this system is not well suited to music playback. Perhaps. I couldn't say; this is for home theater and I am getting crisp, clean sound which, to my ear (and agreed to by my wife) is stunning. After tweaking, I have an spacious and immersing movie sound experience.Conclusion:I couldn't be happier with this system. It was easily installed and setup then quite simply does what it's supposed to do; deliver great surround sound. I've heard many systems over $1k (sometimes WAY over) in many surroundings and can't hear much, if any, more sound quality for the extra moolah. I could've afforded a lot more for surround but if not necessary, why? I'll use the >$700 I saved from buying a much more expensive to buy Blu Ray movies to enjoy on this one.

Have had the X 530 for about a year and it has never let me down. The sound quality is fantastic (with a range of 40Hz to 20KHz you get practically the whole human audible spectrum). Easy to set up and start using. The bass is indeed powerful and you'd better locate it far from external hard drives or your CPU. All in all, a great sound system and pretty affordable as well.

Like the title says these speakers are pretty good and overall I'm happy with this purchase.The good: Reasonably loud volume, sounds pretty good, separate Bass level that also sounds good, control is easy to use (if wired), & matrix button for 2.x->surround sound conversion.The bad: Like other reviews have stated the matrix function will sometimes "warble" on video/audio conversion but not on (older) games, but games require matrix for surround sound. (That as an aside, sounds pretty good.) So you end up changing off depending on if you're doing A/V or (some) games. Also, the cords really aren't long enough if you want to cover a room or large area. But they work well enough to cover my couch.As an aside, you really do need to spread these out a bit for "surround sound" to take hold.To get a good idea of what the Bass would do I tested it with the movies "Kingdom of Heaven," "Lord of the Rings," and the like. They sounded good, with elephant stomps & rocks crashing through walls rocking my floor, then the couch, then my lazy backside lounging on top. Pretty cool.I paid retail in a rush for Xmas. Save the $$$ and get them online if the $$$ is burning you for this.

Recently purchase a 19" LCD HDTV for my garage. With the ventilation fans running, it was difficlt to hear the audio through the TV speakers. Hooked up the Logitich X-140 speakers to my TV through the earphone jack and got an exceptional volume increase with amazing clarity. These are great speakers at a minimal price.

Length:: 3:07 MinsThis system simply rocks,every aspect of it its amazing, i have the system hooked up by optical cable and i have to say you that is at least 50 % louder than in the traditional 6 channel direct, so if you're reading this, don waste you time and buy an optical cable, the sound quality with it its amazing, in 4.5 bars of volume out of 20, its enough for giving you a headache. The bass in the optical mode is so so amazing that i dont find a word to describe it exactly, but without exaggerating, playing the song of Throw it up at 1/5 of the volume, all my doors are shaking, the windows, and my computer. So if you have the money dont think about it more, buy this system and you will be amazed for the sound quality, really, you have to buy this!If you want to know:The package includes 3 cables of 4,6 m and 2 of 7,5 mThe subwoofer is 13 x 13 x 16 (height,width, depth)The pod is 9 inches tallthe subwoofer weights between the 30-40 lbs

These speakers are crystal clear and loud as hell and not to mention that they are easy on the eyes. They handle bass very well and never get boomy or bottom out when the sub woofer is jacked up. The first thing I did when I got them was slap on a metal album and turned it all the way up and went outside to see how they sounded... er I mean how much I would be bothering my neighbors (hey... I'm a guy). They literally shook the windows on my house. And they were crystal clear with zero distortion even when they were turned up all the way (they do go to 11 btw, how cool is that?). I have them hooked up to my media center PC via the fiber optic cable and have turned off all the bass or treble, equalizers controls and other effects so I have a clean of a signal, with as little coloration as possible, and they sound wonderful with out any "help". Movies and games are awesome with the 5.1 speakers.Do not walk, RUN to the store and get you some.

I was looking to add some additional sound and bass to my 26" TV, especially for my games. Saw these, tried them out and picked them up. I did NOT want a complicated and expensive surround setup and I also sought to keep the wire clutter to a minimum. This set did the trick.What really attracted me to these particular speakers were the nice, sleek design, as it did compliment my TV. I was also happy with the fact that with this unit there is no bulky AC adapter, but instead a "standard" plug.I plugged it in and the sound was impressive, to say the least. I can also hookup my IPOD for some extra sound and not a lot of money out of pocket.If you want something simple, yet sturdy and inexpensive, look no further than these speakers.

Originally purchased these when I had Windows XP on my computer back in early January, and had nothing but praise for them. However, once I upgraded to Windows 7, the sound quality that came through the speakers wasn't quite the same. Maybe it was the speakers, my sound card, or Windows 7, or a combination of any one of them. I've had to revert back to the set of older X-530 speakers to see if there's any difference. Given some of the sound glitches that people are having with Windows 7, I wouldn't say the speakers are to blame and will wait for more mature versions of Windows 7 before testing again, but you never really know.Other than that little issue, the quality of sound from these speakers is impeccable and top notch, especially with the 'Matrix' feature enabled, which gives the user a great all-around feeling of any games that they're playing or movies that they're watching. I would recommend these speakers to anyone who's looking for a great set of 5.1 surround sound speakers.

These Speakers are Nice! They don't crackle no matter how high you take them. I brought them in 2008 and I have had them blasting ever since, never had a problem or a blown speaker and, I BELIEVE IN PUSHING IT TO THE LIMIT! great system for people who blast there music!! lol FIGHT LOUD WITH LOUD AND CHOOSE THIS AS YOUR WEAPON!!

I have had the z-2300's for the past 3 years and decided it was time to move up. I bought these speakers off ebay, brand new, for just over $300. When I first hooked up the speakers, the sub was outputting very little sound. I contacted logitech support and they sent me a brand new set of z5500. They were very helpful and quick. Anyways on to the quality of the speakers. These speakers sound amazing. I have them hooked up to my xbox 360 through optical. Battlefield bad company 2 is insane on these. You really feel like your in the middle of a battlefield. These speakers will take anything you can throw at them. I have only taken the volume up to 40% with no distortion and it was very loud. Music is great too. I hear many things that were missing on my z2300 set. Even though I had a problem with the first set I still give these 5*.

It's sort of tinny sounding, no low end to speak of really. Not as good as I expected, still way better than my laptop speakers, but kind of pricey for the so-so sound quality.

This little clip-on speakers for notebooks is a great improvement over the notebook's speakers. Sound quality is very acceptable. Its actually better than the under $50 box type speakers that I have tried. The only complaint might be the USB cable - its a little stiff.

I have to admit, I didn't have high expectations before trying out this speaker, but after hearing it on my MacBook Pro-I was truly impressed. My husband is a recording engineer and even he was surprised at the quality of the sound (he said its like a mini-Bose system!) I tried it out on itunes and it was like turning an ugly duckling into a swan-big difference! The next thing I tried was on a skype video call and although it was better, it wasn't the same as listening to music on itunes. Sound quality was not as good, but that's not really fair to the speaker, as it is skype's poor audio quality which is the actual cause.I would not hesitate to recommend this little speaker-clips right on to the top of your laptop, is sturdy and doesn't get in the way. Now I'm spoiled and won't be able to listen to anything through my computer's own speaker! :)

This product defers to the speakers already present in my notebook computer. The volume control of the preexisting speakers is a redundant, useless feature. I was hoping for a bigger, richer sound , but no. Extremely dissapointed

I've always purchased Creative Labs speakers and have been very happy with them. I read lots of the reviews about the Logitech X-140 speakers and thought I would give them a shot. I had a coupon for them... and I wish I hadn't used it. While they look great, are heavy and would have been perfect for my 9 and 7 year old kids, the sound just stinks. Even though my kids wouldn't know the difference, I just can't stand the thought of walking past their rooms and wishing they would turn them down so I wouldn't have to listen to them. I know, I know, it sounds snobby, but I'm not kidding. I can see how folks who only play computer games or limited styles of music might think they sound great and have given them four or five stars, but if you put any kind of rap, dance, hip hop, current country or techno on these things they sound like poop being rubbed into your ear. The louder you turn them up the worse they sound. At low volume they were muddy and too hard to make out. At mid volumes they rattled, popped and hummed. I tried editing equalizer options, SRS and WOW effects (turning them off and on) and could never get them to sound right. Save your time and money and buy something else. I'm returning these tomorrow.

I've just received these speakers and I'm very pleased with the quality of the sound, the idiot-proof installation (in my 17" Dell laptop with Windows7), the sturdy and attractive case, and the reasonable cost. A very nice upgrade, and delivered two days before promised. Well done Amazon!

Overall: Are you kidding? I paid $186 minus a mail in rebate to Logitech for $40 back in March of 2008, shipping was free ($146 total). You can't beat that price!Pros: Great sound (loud clear powerful), easy setup, the best 5.1 computer speakers available.Cons: Sub is large, and buzzy sound (from time to time) when in stand bye mode when other areas of my home are powered on (lights, appliances etc.)No regrets, would recommend to anyone even at the current Amazon price of [...]+

I got so tired of having to put on a headset to get decent sound while watching tv or movies on my laptop, so decided to look for external speakers made for laptops. This gives pretty good sound, is easy to use and takes up very little space in my laptop case. I'm so glad I bought this!June 23, 2011: Edited to say that after less than a year, the speaker no longer works.

I ordered this product and I received it the next day even though I paid for only two day shipping. The speakers are probably loud enough, but I'm a little hard of hearing and I wished they were a little louder. But this depends on the program. The speakers generally are of good sound quality especially for the price.

I bought it so that I could watch movies on my laptop. It fits and looks great, but it's not very much louder than my original lap top speakers. If it worked along with the laptop speakers than perhaps it would be loud enough, but when it's on, my laptop speakers are off. Another disapointment was the lack of stereo sound.

Not much to say that hasn't already been said. This system is very well designed and performs flawlessly.I think most people who drop this kind of money on a computer speaker system already know there isn't much to compare to this.SUGGESTION:Make sure you get a Toslink-to-Optical Mini Plug Digital Cable for this if you want to use true 5.1 AND your computer has optical mini-out. Macbook Pro's do. Not sure about other Mac's or PC's. You can get them for pretty cheap on Amazon from a variety of sellers. On a side note - most modern AV components support Toslink, and it can help you achieve true 5.1 from your digital cable box if you wire it back to your surround system. Anyway...ONE ISSUE:When I use optical out to this unit, my Mac disables it's own volume controls, forcing me to use the ones on the unit. Since I don't know why this is or whose fault it is, I'll accept it and move on with my life. Doesn't effect my 5 star rating :)

I bought these and then bought a Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium. They sound great, the rear speakers seem a little quiet to me though. Still a step up from stereo and awesome sound quality. Strong sub-woofer.

These are absolutely great speakers.......unless you have a problem. I spent hours with their tech help online trying to figure out what was wrong, they finally shipped me a new part (the console) which didn't fix the problem. I took them over to Best Buy willing to pay whatever it took to get them fixed. They were ready to go until they found out that Logitech would not allow them to fix the problem and since I was now past the warranty period, Logitech wouldn't take the speakers for repair either. I had called many electronic and computer repair places who mentioned they got no support from Logitech so couldn't repair the speakers. I ended up giving them to Best Buy to have him recycle them.Ridiculously Bad and stupid. DON'T even think about buying them. Logitech is no Nordstrom. They're the extreme opposite.

These speakers are color coded so you can't make a mistake whe attaching the cords to the speakers. The colors did't match those on the back of my computer but if you check the software that came with the soundcard or the paperwork, you shouldn't have much trouble figuring it out.The sound is great. I use the system to play games, to listen to music and to play movies and the speakers give off phenomonal sound. You won't find a better bargain than these for under $100.

When I moved to school, I had a 13" TV with one speaker, which rattled so bad at times that you could hardly hear the actual sound that was coming out. I decided to purchase the X-540 because it was cheap and would certainly be a step up from what I had - and, it would fit nicely in my dorm.I admit that I am not an audiophile, so my standards probably aren't that high - but I am pleased and even impressed (especially for the price) at the sound this set puts out, as well as the bass. The unit is very simple to set up, and although the wired remote can be inconvenient, it was a trade-off I was willing to make.I do not use it for every-day TV, as I like to be able to control volume with a remote. My new TV only has an optical audio output, so I cannot connect the speakers directly to the TV; however I had them hooked up to my old TV's headphone jack, and they worked just fine. The "gaming adapter" that comes with them is very useful, allowing you to plug both audio cables into the system. I hook my video games (Wii, N64, XBox and 360), DVD player, and the TV (on occasion, via the audio cables from my cable box) up to the unit and they all sound fantastic. I also hook my computer up to them when I want to play games through my TV.Haven't had any problems with the hardware, other than some of the foam pads coming off the bottom of a couple of the speakers. Additionally, I have noticed that one of the rear speakers is rattling like the speaker on my old TV - I assume the grille is coming loose or something, and a rubber band around the unit fixed that. I like the TV clip on the center speaker, it works great, and the matrix mode is nice as well.I would think the length of the cables would make this a little inconvenient for a bigger living room setup, but for a small room/dorm room I have found this to be a terrific set of speakers.

I love Logitech devices. These speakers look great, the sound quality okay. I got these to replace a 10 year old pair of speakers that I had connected to a 13" TV that has a blown speaker. The buttons seem very difficult to turn, and the sound is okay, but nothing special, but for the price. I doubt I could have done any better.

PLUS:System is just right for town house. Size of speakers is compact with clear sound. The ability to select the surround or stereo from the control is just great.Con: Wires are short.

These speakers arrived just in time for a mad party at the apartment, and they pretty much MADE the night! These are perfect for all the college students out there looking for some crazy bass without an insane price tag. The volume limit won't get so loud as to kill your eardrums, as with higher quality (and more expensive) speaker sets, but who wants that anyway? Besides, these speakers can still get LOUD. They definitely hold their own. Apartment dwellers out there... brace yourself for the noise complaints. Love them!

If these are going to sit on your desk, the constant BUZZ is too loud and annoying.The hum continues even if the volume is all the way down; it's a power supply issue, not an issue with the input signal. Buy something else.

I am very picky being an ex sound engineer. These speakers are a great option. You have to remember they are, a compact external speaker system. I have a Toshiba Satellite T115 Ultra compact notebook which I love except the speakers are not what I wanted but due to the small form factor thats to be expected. This speaker system looks great, does not put too much weight on my screen, has plenty of volume and is very clear. Over all this is a great speaker option that has great sound quality.

Had to send them back to logitech. half the time windows did not recognize the device, does not work with itunes (even the latest version), and the volume and mute controls never worked. Too bad because the sound and portability are great.

It's tiny, doesn't really fall of unless you like shake it hard. It clips on.I only get confused on how to activate it, because mostly I listen to music through my headphones and when I unplug my headphones all I get is my laptop speakers,but it's okay, it's my fault, I will figure out a way.Pretty good product:)
