Talk about FALSE advertising. It states on the box for use with any 3.5 mm headphone jack device. Sure...IF you want to be tethered to a USB device since that is the only way these speakers are powered. The speakers are ok when being used with a laptop/netbook but besides that look elsewhere.

Lacks in features, but provides crystal clear highs and deep bass. Perfect for quality above average surround sound system that cost less than most a/v receivers by itself. Not recommend if you need more than one optical and one coaxial digital input. No hdmi, no equalizer, speakers are not upgradeable and won't work with a separate receivers.

I listen to a lot of different types of music, and these speakers sound great no matter what I'm listening to. Definitely happy with this purchase. Sound quality does suffer at max volume but they're super loud, so great for personal use like listening to music loud in your room.

I was a bit skeptical about this set of 5.1 speakers with so many 5-star reviews. I've owned 5.1 Logitech speakers before. They were OK. They worked fine and did their job, but were just OK. I was looking at this X-540 system to replace those old 5.1 Logitechs which I accidentally broke. The price on these was good and I figured that they probably couldn't be worse than my previous ones, so I gave them a try.I'm very impressed. VERY impressed. These are easily two or three times as good as my previous Logitechs. They actually have a slight amount of unmistakable fidelity in there. The woofer has been completely redesigned from the old model and has rather respectable, non-distorted bass. The satellites sound more clearly. The woofer and satellites integrate very well together and the 360 degree envelope is pretty convincing. For the money, I'm very impressed and satisfied. These are a great deal and perform very well in a PC gaming rig, which is what I bought them for. These are obviously not going to best a real hi-fi system (i.e. Conrad Johnson or McIntosh gear driving Dynaudio or Quad speakers) for true musical fidelity. But these speakers really stand apart from the rest of your system and make you take note as they are just such a good performer. Well done, Logitech.

Its great!! strongly recommended if you are looking for 5.1 speaker system for lower price...Its fulfilling all my needs at its best. The voice quality is good..you can feel the surround sound if you place front and rear speakers as suggested.Its awesome for gaming consoles, you can clearly hear every sound...and with its surround sound..it makes gaming experience live..:)bottom line is..its best for its price. If you are looking for great speakers for music only and no other purpose...then this may not be the best choice for you...you should probably search for home-theater systems. It certainly good for multi-purpose like laptops/desktop, gaming console and TVs.

PROS:-This is a great product, which follows the expectations of Logitech products in general.-I am an audiophile, and I would say these sound pretty decent for computer speakers.-The highs sound great, and the lows have good response, although aren't too strong, but that's to be expected since the subwoofer is small.-Uses analog connections, which integrates well with most sound cards (don't have to mess with S/PDIF connections)CONS:-The speaker wires aren't long enough. I have a reletively small room and the wires were far too short. If you want your speakers arranged properly for 5.1 you'll have to get some RCA cable extenders from somewhere like Radio Shack.

I bought this pair of speakers for my Mother's computer in her Art Shop. They look really nice and sound great for just a small set of speakers. Could use a little more Bass but what can you expect without a sub. She loves them! Pandora all day long. Nice clean sound.

At first I was a bit skeptical about buying this product, seeing as it was my first sound system ever. I am actually very impressed with all attributes of this sound system, especially the RIDICULOUS bass this thing can pump out. I had it on vol. 4 approximately, and the bass was so heavy even at low levels that it was shaking the metal things in my closet like 30 feet away. I'm at my college dorm right now, where it's set up, and I must say, my neighbors are not too happy :P. I managed to crank it up to about 8, but after that I couldn't push myself to go higher, as it was becoming WAY TOO LOUD for 1 AM haha. My friend told me that when I did, he could feel the bass from 4 floors up at the very least. I am overall excited and heavily satisfied with this product. I would recommend this to any music lover/raver/partyer. I've already had my RA come in and warn me about the loudness XD.

For use on a computer it is pretty much the best that i could find with 5.1 you wont be dissappointed ....for close proximity rooms only....dont assume you should use it for you true home theater ....but for computer use...5stars

somehow the one I get makes a high pitch noise whenever I turn on its power switch. It is generated by the power surge for sure and can catch people in surprise. This is annoying. But I am too lazy to return it since it otherwise works fine.

Well, I can not complain about the volume, bass or mounting abilities of the system. I did have a surround speaker buzz and crackle after 5 months. That's the only reason I have not given this system a 5 star rating. I replaced the speaker with an ebay purchase and hope that will be the only replacement I have to worry about for a while.

These speakers are so cheap I didn't believe for a second they would be even tolerable.I was wrong. -1 star for clunky appearance, otherwise a great purchase.Yeah, they're not Klipsch speakers but for computer speakers sitting on your desk they RULE. Decent base, clear treble, and amazingly enough with the exception of very high notes these speakers image very nicely. With both pointed towards you slightly the sound is very neutral and frankly doesn't sound like it's coming from the speakers, but rather from around you. They're surprisingly balanced sound-wise, solid base, great midrange and not overwhelming on the treble.Another great aspect (for me) is that they have a front-facing earphone outlet, so I no longer have to reach behind my stupid computer to plug in my earphones. Also the front facing physical volume control and tone control are nice as well. And they really are plug-and-play, plug them into a wall socket, plug them into your computer's earphone jack and voila... 100% improved sound.Very nice, a great way to spend $30 or less and massively improve your computer sound system.My only complaint is that they're a bit awkward looking, they do look like the kind of thing you'd find at a garage sale or attached to the computers in a high-school computer lab... but really for $30 I'm not expecting them to be stunning examples of design, they already well exceeded my expectations so I can't really complain much.

I did not buy this speaker set from amazon or its market place. I did however watch them to see if they woukd drop like some reviews say. I instead purchase them from frys.com for 319.99 on sale that came with a 100 rebate totaling 219.99 plus some postage. An awesome deal. Easy setup long satilite speaker cords(i wish were longer).Mainly I use the optical input connected directly to my ps3. The sound is awesome compared to my old 5.1 system by creative. the first bluray I played was inception with decaprio. I was instantly impressed again. After that I played some Call of duty: black ops the suround clarity managed to net me a few more kills and less deaths when I was able to hear my enemy coming.The one inconvenience I would mention is the sub, right when you open the box theres a sign, "keep two feet away from any electronics." Hah, I said what a problem to have and I dont mind having it.Bottom line: bargin

I rated this item 1 star because I didn't know how else to get this info across to anyone other than grabbing their attention with a low rating. It is probably a great product from the reviews, but I want to help netbook owners with the info I just got from Logitech, after $1.50 phone call (no toll free phone).I just got off the phone with Logitech. After spending over an hour online trying to find the actual size of the clamp, I was forced to call Logitech for info because it exists nowhere on the web, including their website.I have a Acer Aspire one netbook. The entire top of the screen is about 10". the microphone is 3" from the left, the webcam is dead center. The bezel is just shy of 1" from the top to the screen.I was told that the clamp is deeper than 1" and it would break my screen if I tried to use it. It also will obscure both the microphone and the webcam, so essentially this is useless on a netbook, or any laptop that has a bezel shorter than maybe 1 1/2 inches. All this despite the fact that it is partially advertised as a netbook speaker! You can certainly use it unattached, but if you want the convenience of attaching it to your screen, according to Logitech, this will not work.Even though this info came directly from Logitech cs, I find it hard to believe.is anyone using this with a 10.1" Acer Aspire One, and if so, how does it work?

Very good sound for casual listening and computer gaming, the X-140 speakers are better than expected for its value. The size of the speakers are also a little bigger than expected, which is probably the reason for its powerful sound.

BOUGHT THIS FOR MY WIFE'S CHEAP DELL LAPTOP THATS 3 YEARS OLD THE SPEAKERS SUCK. BOUGHT THIS ON THE RECOMMENDATION OF OTHERS AND LOGITECH'S REP. THEY MAKE A GOOD PRODUCT. THESES ARE GREAT SPEAKERS FOR THE SIZE. THEY SOUND BETTER THAN MY NEW TOSHIBA LAPPY WITH HARMON/KARDON SPEAKERS. I DONT RECOMMEND ANYTHING THAT DOESNT DELLIVER. THESE ARE NOT A/C POWERED SURROUND SPKS. BUT THEY ARE COMPACT AND YOU CAN MOVE TO ANOTHER ROOM WITHOUT LEAVIN G THE SPKS BEHIND. ALSO,I CAN HERE THESE THESE THINGS FROM TWO ROOMS AWAY! JUST GET UM.

Ordered these speakers to replace my generic piles of junk speakers from 1995 (Too much Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer back in the day destroyed any sound quality the old speakers may have had) For the X-140 Sterio Speakers, these are a very good set. The Sound quailty is very clean and sharp at low to mid volumne, a small buzz at louder volume (May be causec by the soundcard on my Motherboard). Tone control is not the greatest but I place it and leave it. Does have good bass for speakers of this size. If someone did have a separate subwoofer, and roll some of the lows away from these speakers, that would be TNT. Also, the black look is stylish.Pro: Cheap, Good Sound Qaulity, Quailty speaker housing, stylish for nerds like myselfCon: Eurgonomics of the speakers could be better being that the speakers point too high. A Buzz at louder volume (75% cranked).Overall, If these last me 15 years, I will be happy.

We bought a 27" Samsung HD LCD TV from Costo for use in a Kitchen. The picture is great but the speakers in the TV are horrible. At Max volume we could barely hear the thing. So we looked long and hard for external speakers that would plug into the headphone jack on the back panel of the TV. The Logitech speakers looked promising. We read the reviews and still were not convinced this was the answer, but at the price we decided what the heck, let's give em a try. We have other Logitech products that we have never had problems with. The speakers came today and I hooked them in right away - one jack to plug into the TV - that was it - elapsed time - 20 seconds. Now bear in mind that these are not designer speakers, but they are relatively small and are barely noticeable sitting on either side on the TV. They look good. We cannot use our remote for volume control with these babies but that too is OK, given the area we are using them in (the kitchen). Now, here's the really good news.....there is a 300-400% increase in the volume we now get out of the TV using these speakers. The volume has a dial which we have at about 50% of full and that eclipses the volume from the TV speakers by about a factor of 2. There is also a base/treble knob to adjust tone. All in all, they are economical,simple, efffective, and if you don't require sophisticated sound they are easily a very wise investment.

I bought these to replace the poor excuse for speakers I was using with a laptop on a kitchen counter. These sound fine for their price and size. The angle of the speaker mount is exactly the same as the angle of the screen on the laptop and they look like they were designed for this purpose.

It has been a year since I have purchased these speakers, and I love them. They rlly do give you great listening experience. I use them for my comp and also for my xbox 360(an adapter comes with the speakers for gameing consoles). I have had no problems with these speakers at all. Would definetly recomend this product to buy, I have already rocomended this to my frineds. Overall, great product.

Purchased these speakers for a new PC and the sound is excellent. Glad I got these speakers. They are a 2.0 design (no separate bass unit - that should be obvious from the picture) which was what I was looking for. I think they are too large and heavy to use with a traveling laptop (although some people do use them that way), but are excellent for a stationary PC.Purchase thru Amazon was simple, uncomplicated, quick, no problems - I like doing business thru Amazon.

I've been looking for a new set of external speakers for my laptop, and these Logitech speakers were much better than what I expected. Previously, I was using unpowered speakers, which are OK for quiet background music. But even with the laptop volume on max, unpowered speakers are too soft for some webcasts and videos, forcing me to use headphones. Over the years, I've also used various powered speakers in the $10-$15 price range, and they've generally been "OK". But those models generally lack frequency response, especially bass response with the volume somewhat low. So, I decided to go up a notch and get these Logitech speakers, which are still very reasonably priced. Wow, what an improvement! They sound great, with crisp highs and clear, warm bass, even at low volumes. I'm currently using them at home, but I'm so delighted, I think I'm going to get a second pair for the office.The only two things I can think of to be aware of if you're considering these speakers:1) Size: They are a bit larger than typical PC speakers. Check the dimensions to make sure they'll fit comfortably in your space. They are definitely too big to fit under a monitor, for example, but they would be fine sitting on either side of a monitor. And, you don't want them behind anything since they sound best with a direct path to your ears.2) Tone control: I'm not a fan of "tone" controls, which the Logitech speakers have, mainly because they don't work well in fine-tuning frequency response. I'd rather see a volume control only and equalize the sound via software controls. But the tone control is there, and setting it to the middle position doesn't seem to muck with the sound in a negative way.Assuming the size of these speakers are OK for your situation, I'm sure you'll be happy with the sound. These are by far the best external PC speakers I've ever used.

This is a very nicely designed unit with excellent sound quality for a product in this price range. However, after just one week of use, it would no longer power up. This created an immediate problem because external speakers are essential to the effective use of my laptop.Logitech's support was very helpful, but they concluded that the product is faulty. I'm currently following up on a replacement under warranty. I hope this is a one-time issue and not an indication of overall quality problems with this product line.UPDATE: Logitech promptly replaced the speakers and there have been no further issues. Based on the sound quality/price ratio, this would be a 5-star, except for the initial problems with the unit.

I really liked the speakers. Its very good for music. Though I am not an audiophile and I haven't had a luck at higher end speakers, this one reproduces the tonal quality really well. I haven't given 5 star because the voice (as in speech) is not reproduced well. Maybe not the best for movies. But again I dont have any other speaker to compare with.

I have bought TWO sets of these speakers. I have taken them to work with me and they are great. I needed a set of speakers to be louder than the background noise and these do it. The price is incredible and I am able to play them at high volumes for long periods of time without any ill effects.

The bass is nice, I use it in my living room with the speakers spread out and the sound is just fine once all the adjustments in the equalizers are done in my source (currently a gaming laptop)Only thing i'd have liked was some control over the speaker balance - eg. It often helps to have one knob that can adjust sound distribution from the back to the front speakers, similar to a stereo balance (which also is absent in this)The Matrix button is nice and helps run sound through all speakers despite just a stereo input

First of all I would just like to let you know, that as of the past few days - these have been taken off the Logitech website. They are no longer listed on the UK site. I assume this is to provide more sales for their new, cheaper, z906 system. I would like to let you know that the z5500's are FAR better, as well as more powerful.They really are great speakers - I'm not going to jabber on, I've already done that elsewhere and you can get a pretty good idea of what they're like from the rest of the quality reviews here... BUY THESE!

As people say: "For the money..." I'm not prone to reviewing products, but I'm absolutely crazy about these speakers. Do they have window rattling bass? Not by a long shot. But the low end they provide is sufficient for a very enjoyable music listening experience. The all important midrange is clean; as is what low range there is. I'm not a gamer but as an avid music listener (mostly jazz), they provide a most musical and non fatiguing sound. I can listen to them at close range for hours at a time. If you want a good deal of (clean sounding) low end, you're going to have to spend a lot more money. But for a natural sounding, non fatiguing, close up musical sound, I can't imagine anything better.

Needed to upgrade the speakers but didn't want to spend a lot. These logitech speakers fit the bill. Many speaker sets are large and cumbersome which creates a need to move equipment around. I didn't want to do that. This set is slightly larger than the $10 speakers you can pick up anywhere, but the sound is greatly improved. The volume is much better and so is the quality.These speakers are being used in a large room for video conferencing with students. The nice part is the size. As I said before, I didn't want to have to rearrange equipment to get a set of speakers with a subwoofer to fit so I gambled on there. No regrets! I simply plugged them in, placed them where the old external speakers were and turned them on. No problems hearing the webconferencing now!Definitely consider getting these if you don't have a lot of space. And, Logitech is a trusted name.

I bought these speakers for use in teaching a dance class using digital files on my laptop. They replaced a little Altec Orbit, which was a nice little speaker, but just didn't have enough power. One space in which I teach is a multipurpose room in a church basement...big space with ceilings of about 20 feet. The Logitech speakers do a nice job of providing good quality sound and...the big consideration...have plenty of power. Love the fact that they can be adjusted to compensate for the sound output level of the recordings, which are by no means uniform. They are light and easily fit in the second compartment of my laptop case. I would by these again in a hearbeat.

As many other reviews said, very clear, crisp noise with a VERY powerful sub. The product does have a warranty, but don't rely too heavily on it. I called tech support for an RMA on a speaker that was quieter than the rest, and then found out it was an extension cable causing the problem. I had already arranged the RMA, and given them an email address, and never got an email, which means that if it had been a faulty speaker, I would have had to call back and went through the whole process again. Also, tech support is outsourced, and I could only understand about 60% of that the Indian guy on the other end said. I look down upon Logitech for their outsourcing. I haven't needed the warranty yet, but if I ever do need the warranty, I am probably SOL.Like others said, the cords are short, but this isn't a big deal because the speaker cords are easily extendable. However, there is no way to extend the remote cord, without cutting it and making your own extension. This means the subwoofer can't be more than ~5 feet from where you want the remote. Kind of sucks, because my sub would have much more effect if it were in the corner of the room, and my desk is somewhat in the middle of the room.

After spending much time with Logitech diagnosing why only 2 speakers worked, they deemed the unit to be defective. I've wanted these speakers for some time now because of all the reviews I've read saying these were fantastic speakers, but I cannot enjoy them since the seller sold me a defective unit. I don't blame Logitech on this, rather the seller.

This is just a note on the use of 5.1 channels without a soundcard.I read a lot of reviews were people said the rear speakers won't function with stereo input. And that is correct if you follow the instructions given in the manual for stereo inputs. However, if you go buy a stereo to RCA splitter, and connect the RCA output to the RCA adapter (the little black box with red and white inputs on one side, and green black and orange outputs on the other) and connect all channels in the speaker's input onto the RCA adapters other end, then all speakers work and you get 5.1 output even without an specialized sound card (won't be as good as with a sound card, but much better than not using the rear speakers.Sad that a stereo to RCA "Y-splitter" is not enclosed in the package. I bought one at walmart for $4 and fixed the issue. Highly recommend doing that !

As others have said, these are a great deal for the money. The control panel is really nicely designed, things just work (and in a logical manner) and everything was well packaged. The sound is clean, dialogue in particular comes out very nicely on these speakers. I haven't used them for listening to music, but background music sounds good and ambient sounds are particularly well represented. I'm not an audiophile (although I did do sound engineering some years ago), and I'm sure that the audiosnobs out there will have things to nit-pick about. These are obviously not designed with that audience in mind.In a home-theater environment with projector noise and an acoustically imperfect room these speakers still put out a great sound that does the soundtrack justice. I'm very happy with the purchase, if I was going to get anything better I would have jumped to something in the $1.5-2k range and spent some time on the room acoustics. I'd spend my money and time a dozen other ways before doing that, if you feel the same way then these speakers are probably a good match.

bought these from Amazon in March 2006. 5 years ago. They're still going strong. They're my primary home theater speakers. I use them with a digital projector, and the true dolby surround sound coupled with a 10 foot screen, it truly is a "home theater" experience. The DTS and dolby digital decoding work flawlessly. I run an optical cable from the DVD player.I'd say overall use is about about 50/50, music and movies.Works great for both.Maybe a little heavy on the bass for normal music listening. But easily turned down with the remote.Really good sound at a really good price. tremendous value.

I returned these speakers a day after receiving them.The speakers are much larger than what I expected for a product called a notebook speaker. They are even larger than my desktop speakers! After further research, I have found that there are plenty of smaller notebook speakers on the market. If you are looking for portability in your laptop speakers, look elsewhere.The included carrying case feels like it is made from quality material. It is covered in neoprene and is not flimsy. However, it is larger than it needs to be, making these speakers even less portable.The volume buttons are very sensitive. It's too easy to press the + or - volume buttons and find yourself at no volume or maximum volume while intending to slightly change the volume.The sound quality is far below what I would have expected for speakers of this size and cost. Perhaps the reason for the cost is that USB is responsible for both power and audio, which is a nice feature. No batteries are needed and there is only one cord that needs to connect to the laptop.I just don't see a need for these speakers. They are too large to be portable. And you don't need portable speakers, USB speakers become significantly less enticing. There are speakers that use a 3.5mm jack for audio and use either USB or AC adapter for power at less than half the cost and sound better.

First of all I have to say this speaker system sounds great. I have them hooked up to my Dell PC and I'm perfectly satisfied with the way they sound and I love the subwoofer. But for some reason the designers decided that the mounts for the satellite speakers only rotate around in one direction, which makes mounting them not only particularly difficult, but it limits where they can be placed if you want them aimed in a specific location. I finally found mounting locations that accommodated this flaw, but this placement was not optimal. Therefore, I deducted one star. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the sound quality and they look good in my office too.

I have had this product since my freshman year in College when I picked it up from amazon for a crazy low price with a mail in rebate. I had heard my Resident Advisor's setup, who had two of these systems together, and it would literally shake the elevator. The system sounds amazing in most small to midsized rooms, unfortunately, I have not had it in a room that was too large. This system has worked amazing since new, and I normally use the optical audio input, but it is also setup for the 3 3.5mm plugs that most computers have as well as digital coax. My only gripe is that sometimes, depending on the source, the midrange is lost and the center channel over powers the other sounds, this can easily be adjusted with the settings on the remote on the fly. This THING BOOMS! If you want loud bass, that is not just the head pounding distortion, this thing sound absolutely amazing, I did not pay the full price and I would pay full price right now if I needed a second or third set. Absolutely an amazing product, I can not wait to see the refreshed version in the future!

Purchased these speakers to take with my projector to use with powerpoint presentation to several different groups. The speakers were great. They produced enough volume so that all of the people in the large room could hear the video clips. They were extremely easy to use - just plug into a USB port. You need to make sure that the cord is plugged all of the way in and be sure to adjust the volume on your laptop as well. They are so compact and easy to carry in their case. I can put the case in my purse and have my hands free to carry all of the other things I need.

I attached this to a laptop and to a netbook. In both cases the device was detected automatically and the sound quality was much better than the built in speakers.

I have had this system for five years, and for five years it has been the most amazing PC speaker system I have ever owned! I have it running off a Creative X-Fi Fatality sound card through an optical connection. For the price the sound REALLY cant be beat! Plus theres a few hidden settings that you can change. Easy to find if you google. I have the rear speakers mounted on a couple OmniMount stands to have a surround sound experience. The ONLY complaint I have ever had with these speakers was that the headphone out from the control unit is a bit low. But I am looking into a headphone amplifier to place in line and that should take care of that!
