These speakers are fine for general purpose only since most laptop speakers are too low to for you to hear from a distance, i mainly use these to listen to talk radio online so i don't need too much features. The nice thing is that the speakers are usb and don't require too much power. However, if you need speakers to listen to music that is heavy in bass, this is not for you, since the speakers tend to physically 'skip around' from the vibrations of heavy bass. So if you don't want your speakers to fall off the desk and you like classical, then these are for you.

Nice sound. Glad I only paid this very reasonable, under $30 used for them. Seller had them nicely packaged in original box. The sound cracks up at times. The USB cord from speaker to port is short about a foot long and another wire from this speaker connects to the second speaker is about 2 feet long. These speakers are made for putting them just around the sides of the laptop and not further away.Controls ontop of the first speaker change volume and basic FF, REW, PLAY, STOP, MUTE. Somewhat convenient. Plug and play convenience.Sound is much louder than my SRS premium sound HP speakers on this Quad core laptop.Would not have paid $70 or more for these but $20 used was a decent buy.

For $50-60, this system is excellent. All thats needed is a Y cable (any Radioshack for 10 dollars) to connect these speakers to your stereo out/headphone jack on a computer/laptop.Sound quality is absolutely fine. Its not Bose perfect, but it is very clear and crisp. I used it in a dorm room, and got complaints for the bass two floors down in concrete brick walls. Have been blasting them daily for three years and they sound just as they did brand new, and the bass is hitting just as well. The surround sound is not very impressive, and I set up the speakers around the room but this did not make a huge difference in sound. Still, sound is excellent and loud enough, and overall has been the best investment in computer speakers.

This is exactly what I wanted to go with my Sony all-in-one computer. The computer has optical out, and the Z-5500 has optical in, and the processor and amp in it produce amazing sound. The control unit is quite handy and easy to place within reach without the big footprint of an amp. The high quality sound has made using the all-in-one computer a completely new experience. In my opinion, the Logitech Z-5500 gives me one heck of a lot for the money.

One reason I bought these is so I can hear television shows from the Internet better on my laptop. They are good for this application.Another reason I bought these was to mix and edit audio while I'm traveling. They are terrible for this, because the equalization is all out of wack. The mid-low range frequencies come in louder than everything else. Higher frequencies sound distant and tinny. I can get better mixes from headphones.Also, the buttons don't work so well. They're stiff and you have to pick the speaker up to use them.So if you just need a little boost when listening to music or playing video from your laptop, these will do the job. Just don't rely on them for production purposes.This being said, they're a little bit better than Edirol's USB speakers, which have the same problems but in a more extreme way.

i was used to 2.1 channel sound, small sub, small speakers and let me tell you, IT SUCKED compared to this 5.1 dolby digital surround sound. These speakers are incredible, the surround sound works amazingly and the bass is ridiculous. I tested the bass with a song that required alot of it, turned down the surround and center channels, then blasted the bass and the volume and could hear the bass from my basement and it was shaking my room. It comes with many effects and options so u can really customize what your doing. I Think these speakers are the best computer speakers and are a really good price off amazon. They were 550$+ taxes in store where i am. all in all, FANTASTIC.

Please be aware...these speakers have an integrated power supply that is very susceptible to outside interference. I heard a constant buzz/hum from the left speaker (where the power supply is located) whenever the speakers were turned on.However, by looking at some of these other reviews, it does seem that others had a positive experience with the X-140s. So who knows...maybe I just got a lemon.

These are great speakers,I just wish I didn't have to spend my hard earned cash on them. Why my last THX speaker took a dump I'll never know. Maybe because I left them on for 8 years. This new Logitech system has a nice little thing called a controller with a pretty little button on it so I can turn it off when it's not in use.....amazing. Great Sound...specially in the closet I call my editng room. I'm thinking about hooking these up to my laptop and using them for my car stereo. 505 wattsrocking my Gremlin. I hope the seat belts will keep it stable. Overall, I'm very happy with this product. The worst part was trying to carry the box in after UPS delivered it. After the hernia surgery, It will be great to sit back...(in my closet) and listen to my favorite songs. I'll feel the bass as it rattles my stitches and then, my wife will tell me to turn it down. Did I mention it has a nice contrller. If you want a bike...go to Livermore Cyclery. If you want some speakers for your computer...Just get these. They are Orca approved

Amazing speaker system. Installation was easy and I am incredibly satisfied with the speakers so far.These speakers sound great and are by far the best deal you can get with THX certified 500 watt 5.1 surround sound speakers.My only complaint is that the system does not include any optical (Toslink) or mini Toslink cables for use with many laptops and desktops that do not have S/PDIF outputs. Most Macs and laptops have either optical or mini optical outputs so the inclusion of this cable would be a nice addition for such users.

Small but sturdy, connects with a single usb cable. While I'm not an audiophile, these speakers are a 100% improvement over the pitifully weak built in speakers on my toshiba laptop. Not a replacement for home stereo system, but now I can listen to my music.

I have had the speakers for a few weeks now and they are wonderful. The only thing I would caution people about is that when pressing the buttons to adjust volume, balance or 'mute' there is no -click- audibly and there is no noticeable 'give' to indicate that the button has been adequately pressed.

I purchased this system as a surround sound package for streaming netflix and video from our computer to HDTV. I think a full stereo system and separate speaker package...would be a better overall system but the cost prevented me from going that route. This is cheap enough so that if I ever decide to have a full stereo system I'll use this as a killer surround sound system for a stand alone computer somewhere in my house and I don't have to worry about an expensive stereo system becoming out-dated. I would not have settled for bottom rung components so consequently, a full stereo system and components would have cost many times more than the Z-5500 package. The Logitech system allows for optical input, so I've got a cable from my HDTV direct to the Z-5500 and that works great to play movies through my DVD player. This system sounds better than any sub-$500.00 surround system I've heard.For the money, it is a great system and overall construction is very good. I do have a catching spot on my volume dial and so it doesn't rotate freely all the way around. It's not a big deal though. It looks like a very quality item and the volume control unit is very nicely built and looks great. Inputs allow for a small desktop stereo to plug into it and I listen to my Ipod through it often as well. The options, cost, and quality, make this speaker system very hard to beat.I"ve had this system for more than two years now and it still performs flawlessly.

I've had these speakers for at least two years now.Some positive points:- Slightly heavy, they won't slide easily. (Parents of toddlers and owners of cats, rejoice!)- Durable and long-lasting; I've had these speakers about 2 years, dropped them and yanked them, and they're still golden.- Smaller footprint without being annoyingly miniature.- Well-considered cord lengths, not too long and not too short.- Perfectly fine sound quality for day to day enjoyment.- Tenor, bass, and even reasonably high volume do not distort.- Convenient auxiliary inputs for less fuss.- Handsome appearance, not over-designed or over-fashionable.- Affordable.Negative points:- Audiophiles seem to complain, in other reviews, but I have no ear to appreciate that problem. :)

These speakers produce great sound and are easy to use, just plug them into your USB port. They come with a nice case to carry them or store them with. In my case I use my laptop as an alternative desktop computer, so I don't usually take it anywhere. Therefore I use the case to store the speakers when not needed. The speakers are smaller so that it would not be a problem transporting them along with your computer as long as you had a descent sized bag to carry everything. It is great not having to plug in a separate plug to power the speakers. The speakers are powered through your computer, which will reduce battery time. For the way I use my laptop, almost always plugged in, these speakers are just what I wanted.

Well, cannot be too bad a speaker set if I have bought 3 of them! No issues with them for years (and years). My kids enjoy them too. My friend actually uses a set for his living room as the speakers are small and the fashion police (wife) will not allow "unsightly" speakers. Price is not really an issue as I have had them for while so ROI has been great! I love these speakers!

I ordered these speakers in 2006. It was my first purchase from Amazon. They still work like the day i bought them and the sound quality is excellent. The only downside was that you cannot adjust the sub but its at a perfect level for the speakers. I recommend them to anyone who wants good quality speakers worth the price!

This is the 2nd surround sound system I have purchased from Logitech. The first one didn't have the wireless remote nor all the inputs (it was really for PC use only). With that system, shortly after I bought it, one of the speakers got gently knocked over on the shelf it was sitting on. That blew out the amplifier. Fortunately Amazon sent a new one, and it has worked well since.I got the Z-5500 when I needed more wattage for my emerging home theater setup, and the ability to use it with my Logitech wireless Harmony remote (which is awesome). It sounds great, looks great, and is simple and intuitive to use. One thing that would be nice is if it had more digital audio inputs. There are 4 analog audio inputs, but only 2 digital inputs (one optical, and one coaxial). I use the optical input for the PS2, and have to route the digital coaxial signals from my cable box and 2 DVD players through a switcher, which is connected to the single digital coaxial input.People have noted Logitech's warning to keep the subwoofer at least 2 feet away from other electronic components due to magnetic field issues, but I have kept it right next to my DVD recorder, cable box, PS2 and Wii without any problems. However, I did discover after a long period of troubleshooting that my ClearPlay DVD player was being ruined by the subwoofer. After multiple replacements of the ClearPlay unit, I finally moved the subwoofer a couple of feet away and have not had a problem since.Shortly after getting it, the subwoofer began making loud popping noises (not just when lights were turned on or off, as another reviewer noted, but constantly). Fortunately Logitech replaced the system and it worked well until just after its 2-year warranty expired. Now suddenly I'm getting softer, but still annoying, popping from all the speakers (again, constant). I haven't changed anything with my setup/wiring. I called tech support and they said my only option is to buy another one. Fortunately the popping stopped and I've been using it for a few years now without any more problems. I have an x10 system for controlling lights in and around the house, and I wonder if that was part of the problem (I've learned over the years that the x10 system, that uses the house's electrical wiring to send RC signals, can cause a variety of problems).Anyway, one star off for less than problem free use, but overall a nice system. I especially like the fact that the control box take so little space compared to most other surround sound systems (since most of the hardware is enclosed in the subwoofer).

pros: decent sound quality when it works, no extra power adapter or battery needed.cons: uses usb connection only, sometimes there are usb connection problems when you move the laptop around causing sound to drop out and the V20 audio device to disappear in windows.analysis: mobile speakers ironically not very useful in a mobile environmentif you just plug it into your laptop's usb and you don't move the laptop around, then you're good.but say if you're in your car and you want to use bettery quality speakers than your laptops built in speakers, the usb connection can be a problem as it may cut off causing you to have to restart the media player's application in order for sound to play back again. (unlike using headphone plugs, when moving your laptop around, you can't just unplug the usb and plug it back in)

These speakers sound great--full sound. They're attractive. They come in a hard case with hidden zipper. Might be a bit large for a slim laptop bag. They have built-in stands. The cable from computer is about 2 foot long, the cable between the speakers is about 3 foot long. Just plug into the USB port and away you go--that's it. I use them when I listen to music on iTunes or watch podcasts. I'm not one to pump up the volume till it's blaring, but I tried it and there wasn't any distortion. The instructions do say that really really loud sounds may have to be dialed down a bit.

These speakers sound much better than another pair which cost twice as much I ordered recently. Guess I'll put the other speakers on my growing pile of obsolete computer junk. I wish I had ordered these in the first place! I was fooled by the low price into thinking they weren't as good as the more expensive speakers, but they are actually much better sounding. Sometimes, you get what you don't pay for!

Like many people I was fed up with the low sound and quality of my laptop speakers. I did my research and choose these speakers to give my movie watching and music playing experience an extra boost. Speakers are a bit big but still don' take up much room. Sound quality is excellent for just two speakers. I never hear distortion, even when cranked up to the maximum volume. Highly recommended.

I am not an audiophile and focused more on having decent graphics and screen size for PC gaming, but my wife suggested it was time to get something better than the crappy 2.1 Omega speakers I had. Wow, was she right! In my computer room these speakers fill the area and sound excellent. The base is loud enough to make me feel like I have a mini cinema. I can say these speakers aren't for blasting at a party with a large hall room but for my little computer space it's very loud and can be heard throughout my house.Seriously, with the crazy price of [...] bucks you will not be disappointed (unless you have a crappy sound card or you need THX certified equipment to satisfy your sound cravings) so just buy it already!

Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 505-Watt 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker SystemI was blown away by the high quality of sound from this system.the lows were unbelievable.the highs were crisp and exact.my war games now allows me to tell the differance in pistol and rifles shot. they have there own sound that I could not here before,of course my music sounds great and has more than enough power to rattle the walls.I don't believe I will be needing any other speaker system for some time to come.for under 300.00 dollars it's a great buy.(SOOOO REALLLL YOU WON'T BELIEVE IT)

Short version: Get these speakers and don't regret it.Long version: No complaints about these speakers so far. They have 3 different inputs (optical, digital coax, and 3.5mm analog jacks aka headphone-sized jacks). The variety of inputs and the ability to change them with the included remote makes this like a mini receiver. I use the speakers with inputs from my PC and PS3 and they both sound great.When I played Metal Gear Solid 4 for just a few minutes, the surround effects were immediately noticeable. Face the gunfire and hear it from the front. Turn around and you hear the gunfire from behind you (assuming you've put your rear speakers in the rear).Doesn't come with an optical cable, so you may want to buy that from Amazon at the same time if you have a need for one.Final thought: for my setup, I ran the rear left speaker wires the "long way" around the room so I wouldn't trip on them and I had to get some more 18 gauge speaker wire in order to reach. Of course, that will depend on your setup, but just food for thought. The additional wire was also a cheap investment from Amazon.

I am not an audiophile per se - I listen to mp3s, watch DVDs and listen to internet radio on my laptop, but I know I can spend a lot more money on speakers than I have for better quality. I've had these speakers for four years and I've been very pleased over all. I get a lot of power from the subwoofer and I like being able to plug my headphones into the speakers directly at will. I've gone through at least four pairs of headphones over the same period of time and I feel that the sound these speakers offer is warmer and richer than I'd get with just headphones alone. The short cords that tie the speakers together make them difficult to arrange in a limited amount of desk space and it is difficult to balance the central volume control on my laptop with the speaker volume control to get the best volume range, but I feel that Logitech generally makes a solid, reliable, inexpensive product, and I've bought many more Logitech products because of my satisfaction with this one. They're old and I can probably do a lot better these days, but they haven't let me down yet.

I have owned my 5500s for a couple of years now and still love them, at least in general. For the price there's nothing better. I especially love the 'remote' controller stand with it's big volume knob and simple selector buttons. I've tried to find a full-size receiver with something comparable but there's nothing. The 5500 is effectively a 'receiver' in that it has multiple inputs and full Dolby and DTS processing (just no radio :-)The one real problem I've had was something that I didn't even notice until months after I'd purchased it. When I mute the optical input the sub-woofer IS NOT muted?! I have my TV's tuner connected to the optical and my HTPC connected to the coax, and I mostly use the computer to watch recordings. So it was only on the rare occasion that I was watching a live broadcast *AND* hit mute during a commercial *AND* that the commercial had a 5.1 soundtrack (with sub-woofer sounds, i.e., the ".1" part) that I realized there was something wrong.I would be interested to know if any other 5500 owners have the same problem as Logitech tech support said it was an unknown problem. They offered to replace my controller but -- important to note -- they were unwilling to cross-ship it. So I would have had to go without surround sound while waiting/trusting them to send me a replacement asap. It just wasn't worth it and so I've had to live with the problem (infrequent as it is).

Set this system up in my small theater room. All I can say is its pretty impressive. I'm connected direct with a optical cable to a Sony upconvert DVD player. You can feel the action on the screen without any distortion at all. The sub woofer delivers a powerful punch. Sounds awesome hooked to my Xbox360 as well. Still can't believe it was only $230 shipped. I'm sure you could pay a lot more for a system that's equal in sound, but why? Amazon delivered with no problems. Its THX certified which is impressive, but its only for the multimedia sound category. There are different categories for THX ratings. Anyway, it doesn't matter, it still sounds great. I can't figure out why this product is marketed as a computer system setup. Its more than powerful enough for a average size home theater. It doesn't come with a optical cable so see if you'll need one. Mine was only $6 from Ebay and it works great. You can extend the speaker wire to hide it in walls if you choose to do so-I did. Just use the correct size and don't extend them too much. You will not be disappointed!!!!UPDATE: I finally got my wife to checkout this system as setup in our home. She was jumping in her seat at moments of loud intense action on the screen. Like I said, this system delivers and you feel like you're there. Punching sounds for sure.

This is really a great Speaker most of all the fact it has a built in decoder of Dolby Digital ProLogic 2. And sounds even better if you have one of the Creative Sound Blaster x-Fi Cause they have a program that enables Dolby Digital Live. Which sounds great. :) I have these speakers under Optical Running Digital or DTS which ever I choose. You can still use ProLogic 2 if you choose too. So when you really think about it you have not only ProLogic 2 movie, And Music, And Stero or Stero 2 with optical you also get Digital Dolby Live and DTS Digital. This is a fine product. I use to have the Logitech X-530 And I have to say the z-5500 Sounds much better. :) So you wont be dissapointed to buy these Z-5500. Though I worry about some of the reviews that Ive read here. I only hope it wont happen. I take proper care of my equipment so I hope these last me longer then 3 years.

I see that it allows usage for PC, CD's, Mp3, and such but it says nothing about TV. Will this system hook up to my TV like my current Panasonic surround system? or do I need to by something in order to get surround from this system through my TV..responses would be much appreciatedthanks,Customer

So, I bought these speakers because I'm a dummy. I was messing around in msconfig on my new computer so I could stop all the pre-loaded crap from opening on start-up and I accidentally shut off my sound card. I thought I blew my old Harmon/Kardon speakers and bought these. I didn't realize how dumb I was until after it had shipped. Once it got here I had read so much about this system that I just wanted to see what it could do. Let's just say I was impressed. I don't understand why people say that it has too much bass though. Don't get me wrong, the bass is great but they must be elderly. I was almost disappointed to just have good bass if you can believe it. The thing that impressed me most in comparison to my Harmon/Kardon setup is that no matter what level I play the speakers at the clarity is unbelievable. The clarity in my old setup seemed to diminish the louder I turned it. These things are clear all the time. After hearing these speakers, I decided I wanted them for my home stereo setup rather than my computer. The Harmon/Kardons are still pretty decent. Just a word of warning though, while this system has the capability for lots of inputs, it will likely require lots of adapters to make it work. Either way, I really like this system, especially for the price.

I owned these for 29 days before I returned them.Overall for the price, they weren't too bad. The surround is good, the speakers can pack a decent punch for their size, and the sub is quite strong. The sense of 'being there' was good for games that supported surround. Watching movies was definitely quite enjoyable using these.As others have mentioned, the cables for the speakers are way too short. Fortunately they use standard RCA connections, so getting extension cables is easy (albeit an additional cost). Besides that, setting up is pretty easy, and I do like the center speaker's ability to sit on top of my monitor.However, where I feel these speakers really let me down is with music. I tried setting the speakers in various different places at different distances and angles. I tried using the 'matrix mode', my X-Fi card's own stereo expander and just regular 2.1, but the speakers never really sounded very good. The high-ends lack clarity, the mid-tones lack strength, and the sub seems a bit loose from the whole sound-world.In conclusion, if you're looking for just a gaming and/or movie surround set, and don't intend to use them for music much, they're certainly worth their cost. But if like me, you listen to music a lot on the same speakers as you play games, I'd put in the extra buck and get something more suited. And that is why I decided to return them.

I have owned the Z-5500's for over a year now and have not experienced a single problem with the speakers. I had to read through the 1 and 2 star reviews to get a feel for what people thought were valid complaints.For the peolpe who experienced a problem under warranty then complained because they wouldn't have sound for 2 weeks while the repair was in progress- you rated these speakers 1 or 2 stars, if they are that bad you should just go purchase a cheesy set of speakers and leave these to the true audiophiles.For the "Electrical Engineer"- I'm a master electrician. The popping you hear is an arc feedback in your electrical system. Replace your mercury or snap switches with quiet switches or get an APC UPS... you really should have decent power protection on all your equipment anyway. Also take advantage of a device called a "Graphic Equalizer". This modern marvel will let you fully adjust all ranges of the audio and your lows will no longer be too low. Jeez! Some "Electical Engineer".Others complained about failures outside the warranty period. Nothing lasts forever, but does that mean they were crappy speakers while they worked? If you paid $300 and they lasted more than 1 year, you paid less than $1 a day for awesome sound.... and how much did you spend for a coffee at Starbucks every day? I'd rather have the Z-5500's than a Grande!Sweet sound, shake the pictures off the walls when i want them to, over 1 year and not a single glitch.... get 'em at this really low price! You won't be sorry!!!

i purchased these speakers to replace my lousy HP Multimedia Speakers (UC-230). No offence to HP, but those things were crap! So I bought these speakers [...] refurbished. One of the best purchases I have ever made! These speakers are crisp and clear. The rear speaker cords must be 10' long! The subwoofer emits a lot of bass and I like the attached 'remote control' Also, the headphone jack is right on the control, so you can easily plug in headphones when needed.

I upgraded from my Z-5300e's which I guess I was lucky from what I heard to have a beautiful sound from them to these, Let me tell you what, THEY ROCK. More features and input ports than you can throw a stick at. I Hooked these up in around 20 minutes, but was somewhat prepared since I did have an existing 5.1 5300's already, The cost of this set is pretty good now compared to last year. So I finally indulged myself. All the different prologic options make it sound great, Yes most of you will need to adjust ur media player EQ or Soundcard EQ to get some extremely great sound. I've tested this set with a full range of different types of music and movies, they all sound wonderful. I'm not gonna take a star off for the volume knob getting "sticky" in one spot. Ive always got the remote if it bothers me. I do think anyone should invest in a set, even if its just for their tv/dvr/dvd use. Im using a FiberOptic cable that I picked up at a local Mart. 16$ and no shipping for a 6'clear Phillips cable. I do caution you to one thing, if you live in an apartment, duplex, or dorm room, you will probably get complaints from this set.Anyways I'll post some pics in the next few days of my set up here. Until then Ill be pushing these to their limit.

Small, easy to use. I had an initial problem getting them to work ... not the fault of the speakers, but my lack of knowledge. I contacted the company and they responded immediately with the solution. I've used them enough that I am very satisfied with the sound and the ease of operation.

I have a home built computer which I recently updated to watch Blu Ray Movies. I have watched a few movies and the speakers are an excellent complement to my system. They are easy to use and control. I have an optical cable for my Playstation 3 and the sound is great. It has 6 Channel direct connection, an optical connection and a coax connection. You can switch between connections. I have my computer and Playstation 3 hooked up to my speakers. It comes with a remote which is easy to use.

The only reason I bought this system is that there is a remote control that comes with it and that is was rather compact. But when I watched Stargate I was amazed (the part where UFO lands on the pyramid) the clock on the wall fell by the force of vibration produced by the sub. Gaming experience I now epic I really feel like I m in the game. It is a very powerful system for it's size!! The only problem I have with it is sometimes It just decides to turn off , but it only happened to me very few times.

Recently purchased Logitech X-540 from Amazon. Excellent service from Amazon. The Logitech system replaced a similar 5.1 system from Creative Labs which failed after not alot of use. The Logitech is less expensive, sounds much better and has a longer warranty. Definitely would purchase Logitech again as well as purchasing from Amazon.

This system was easy to set up. The matrix system allows 5.1 surround effect for regular mp3 file which it sounds absolutely amazing. Try listen to Celtic Woman - Ave Maria. Feels like you are in heaven with angels singing around you. Also, the system works great with games like Crysis and Bioshock. It immerse you with the sound of screaming splicers and the explosion of grenade launchers. And you gotta love the price. No matter what you say, 5.1 surround sound system with the price of $80(plus shipping&handling) for a college student like me is the best price there is. I have to thank Logetic for making such affordable and amazing 5.1 surround sound system available.

I purchased a set of these speakers for my IBM Thinkpad with XP. Like many others (I found out after the fact) I plugged the speakers in, they loaded properly and a provided a very bassy sound for a short while and then quit working. In reading a number of posts to find a cure to the problem I have come to the conclusion that there is not a satisfactory resolution. Don't waste your time or money on this product.
