I bought one of these for myself, and as my sister who is a keen photographer showed a more than keen interest in it, i also bought her one for the next christmas, it is very simple to use with enough features to get some surprisingly good photos. There is the option of adding extra lens for different conditions which is useful. The zoom is quite good, and macro setting for close up pictures is really good too. Overall i would recommend this if you want a bit more than the point and shoot type of camera as it is simple to use, takes good pictures and isn't really that expensive.

For the price I was very pleased to receive: the charger, a battery and a case included with the camera. Shipping was in a timely manner. The only problem was the colors and picture quality seemed to be less than perfect.

I bought this camera because I owned the same camera and broke the screen. Since I already bought an extra battery for $30 I hated to just throw it all away with the broken camera. So with this purchase I ended up with 3 batteries, 2 chargers and a case to protect the screen from breaking again. But since I already owned this camera the picture quality was very noticeable to me.

This case is perfect for the Fuji FinePix I got, it'll probably fit most cameras of that size. The strap is pretty small (just a wrist strap), but I usually don't use a shoulder strap anyway. It is not completely sealed from the environment - between the top flap and the two side zippers there's a little bit of space, so there's a small risk of rain getting inside. Otherwise, it's cute and practical; the bulky cases I have for my other cameras end up being a pain to pack and carry around, so this is a nice change. I was very happy with the buy.

I am no master technician with a camera, but my s100fs is letting me get some great shots in a variety of conditions. I am in Niagara Falls NY and spend a lot of time in the parks and the upper river islands, as well as down the lower Niagara Gorge. I shoot in not always the most pristine conditions. Having an all-in-one alternative to a DSLR w/ lens kit really works for me. (No dust or dirt!) I have also owned both the s7000 and the s6000fd and liked them both very much. The S100fs is what i was waiting for - a superzoom DSLR.

I also shoot concerts at Artpark in Lewiston NY The long zoom is terrific with the dual image stabilization. The new 11.1 mp sensor does in fact seem made for that barrel (and vice-versa). The fold-down lcd viewfinder is great for shooting at angles and over crowds, don't know how i lived without it.

Full manual everything gives you maximum control, and the scene positions are also a good guarantee of usable images, but I've gotten addicted to the bracketing on this model - especially for dynamic range and film simulation. Also, the face detection on this camera works flawlessly and delivers great results.

Physically, it's big and bad and fits my hands perfectly. I would have liked to see HD video in the S100fs. I'll be waiting for that in my next camera.

5 stars, very pleased.

I've had my camera for 7 months and it is very good value for money. It has many features and modes to choose from, and a friend who is a professional photographer told me it is virtually as good as a DSLR camera!
A couple of tips I'd like to pass on are:-
1)Be prepared for delay of a second or two before you can take a photo when you switch camera modes. This is because a message appears on the LCD screen to tell you what you've set. The delay can be frustrating, especially if you want to capture a moving subject, so it's best to pre-set the mode beforehand if possible to e.g. SP1 - Sport.
2)Detach the lens cover cap from the camera strap before using the movie mode. The mic is very sensitive and the sound of lens cap knocking against the body of the camera will be heard when you play back your movie clips. Likewise, I'd recommend that you set the zoom prior to recording, otherwise you'll hear the sound of the mechanism moving in and out.
Many digital cameras on the market no longer have a viewfinder. This one offers you the choice of using an electronic view finder, or the large 2.5" LCD screen. It's easly to switch between the two.
All in all, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun experimenting with the many features and modes available, and that you will be more than pleased with the quality of the results, as I have been.
It is the best non-professional camera I've ever used.

I recieved this camera for my birthday from my parents and I am very happy with it so far. I do art at school so I use the camera for that and I am very pleased with the results, the range of modes is excellent and the quality is amazing!

Recently, I was at a Lady Gaga concert and the camera was great, thanks to the 15x Optical Zoom and I captured some great video clips using the 720p HD Video Mode.

The only thing I would criticise the camera for is that each clip of video is limited to 15 minutes, so not so good if you want to film for long periods, this isn't enough to take a star off, so I give it the full *****

I brought this last week, it arrived quickly and very well packaged, which is good, because of the cost of it.

This camera is a big step up from my current one, a Samsung Digimax S500, this is a lot more complex but worth it because I am growing in my photographic skills, but the camera was restraining me, both in terms of zoom and macro shots.

Firstly the zoom on this is immense 51x maximum including the digital zoom (which you can turn on and off), even photos taken at this level are pretty good quality. The optical is 10x and very high quality pictures are produced. The macro/super macro are very good and the detail and quality of shots are awe-inspiring.

The LCD panel is a big point, it is very clear and runs at either 60 or 30 fps, at the higher setting it is amazing to watch, it's very fluid, but dark shots seem to slow it down (due to the processing going on, I presume) but it doesn't matter because the quality is still top notch, there also is noise on the image in dark shots, but this doesn't actually happen on the photos taken.

The EVF (electronic view finder) is a joy to use for shots where you need to use it (not really for bright sun because the LCD is fine there too) but personal preference normally sways decision between either.

I don't use the supplied software, because I have no real need to, and I have a SD card reader, so I don't waste battery power transferring the 4mb shots from it to my PC. So I can't comment on that.

The software on the camera is amazing, and has comments for when you use it, for example when using the playback to view taken pictures, I pressed it again, thinking it is a toggle button and would go back to photo mode, but it came up saying 'press shutter button to go back to photo taking mode'. It comes up with details about each mode, which is useful when using it for the very first time. It has many, many settings to it, to suit the 'point-and-shoot' users all the way up to pro/semi-pro levels.

It comes supplied with a very thick, very comprehensive, manual which shows you how to take pictures, and what the settings, like aperture, actually do, with example photos.

The only real niggles I can find are that, when putting the batteries in for the first time, it was a pain to close the battery door, but you get used to that, and the slowdown and noise when taking night/dark shots on the LCD, which doesn't really faze me.

It's a very high quality camera, from a fine make and purchased from a top distributer. This camera is perfect for a wide range of users and so highly configurable and powerful that it will take some time to get used to all of its features, especially in full manual mode.

update- 2009: I have used it a lot since making this initial review. I've learnt a lot about this camera, and even at the price I purchased it at, it was well worth the money, being cheaper now, the £-per-snap is greatly increased. The macro mode is pretty sensational, and hits high above it's price boundary. it's a good, strong, durable camera and will not let you down. You can use 16GB SDHC cards in it too, which I got this Christmas (but they are from a competitor site, branded with their own name, based in Jersey, 4 letters). The only irritating points are sometimes it refuses to focus on a specific area, for reasons best know only to itself, and when taking dark shots you do get noise, but it's never overwhelming, and can be reduced using a photoshop plugin.
It's served me well, and does continue to do so, I am very happy with Fuji's build quality and product design, well done!

For the price of $150 w/ shipping, this thing was a steal like a month ago. While it isn't perfect, you still are getting a pretty good camera for the price. Remember, you're getting a solid point and shoot ultra compact camera, this probably isn't going to win you any artsy awards for best photo, unless they're candid shots. Oh and don't think that the price is an indicator of the build quality, this camera is pretty sturdy, and as an added plus it's made in Japan, or at least mine was.

Note: If you're looking for something with better image quality, go for a F20 or F30. The Fujifilm F20's a tab bit more expensive, a bit bigger and uglier (well it is), but if size and price aren't a problem go for that instead of this, especially where image quality is a must. Back when I got my V10 the F20 was like $50+ more expensive, so I just settled, but now that they're about the same price I might have gone for F20.

Pros:
*It feels strong/sturdy, and looks sweet
*It takes pretty good pictures, at least for 4x6" prints. But, obviously for a compact camera, the pictures aren't going to turn out flawless, technology really hasn't progressed that far, really the biggest changes to todays cameras have been reduction in size and price. Oh, btw, I really don't see that much of a difference between 5 megapixels and 3 so.
*Inexpensive, the price alone tilted my rating positively.
*Responsive, it takes pictures pretty quickly and the controls don't lag. You can take candid pictures of people so easily, with this thing.
*Ultra-compact, and still affordable; sometimes I strap the camera (in a case mind you) to my arm and go running, it's really convenient.
*Adjustable ISO up to 1600, the ISO is the camera's sensitivity to light, the higher you set it the faster the camera will take the picture and the pictures will generally turn out a bit brighter. This is really useful for low light situations or when you're taking a picture of something moving at a decent speed, but keep in mind that the higher the ISO the more noise there is. Regardless, the pictures still print (4x6) alright, despite the very noticeable noise; so it's a trade off. Generally try to keep the ISO levels 400 or below, as you won't get much noticeable noise at those levels, though you might have some issues with blur, depending on the lighting.
*The screen. I love it. It it such an upgrade over my old Sony's 1.25". I can't believe how I managed without it before.
*The video it takes is pretty good. BTW, it comes with sound.
*It's really easy to move pictures off the camera, it's pretty much drag and drop, if that's how you use it.
*the zoom (3.4x which is .4x higher than most other cameras of it's size) is nice, but would be nicer if the camera had image stabilization.

Neutral:
*Battery life is okay, You need to charge it every so often, more so than some other cameras, but it's decent.
*It doesn't have built-in image stabilization, but I'll let it slide since practically no cameras under $200, especially cameras this size, include it.
*Holding it is a little wierd, since the screen takes up the entire back, there's no place else besides the screen to rest your thumb.
*It takes pretty good low light pictures, w/o flash compared to a lot of other cameras; you'll have to hold the camera really still though, which is a bit hard, or get a tripod. The images tend to be a little grainy, but that's pretty normal.
*Noise: On ISO 400+, like it's noticeable, but not glaringly noticeable, until 1600. Also as I said before there's a decent amount for night mode shots. Otherwise, it's pretty good with noise at levels below 400.

Cons:
*It only takes xD cards, thankfully, Fujifilm has seen the error in its ways and Fuji's newer cameras will be SD compatible, maybe the V20 will take SD. I really just hate how xD cards can only be used in Fuji and Olympus cameras, and they're like twice the price of SD cards.
*The screen's a fingerprint magnet.
*There's no hold switch, I know that like no camera has an actual hold switch, but it would be nice to have that so the lens doesn't accidentally extend if you were to have it in some enclosed area, pockets or bags.
*The USB cable isn't a standard mini-USB, I'm not sure what it is, but it just means I have to carry around one more cord, when I travel.

I am learning all the time and hopefully my photos are improving steadily.
I am super impressed with this camera.A great piece of kit, easy to understand and use.
Everything about it is just right for me.
Apart from the fact that the cost was so much lower than the highstreet outlets, (about £40) The amazon service is second to none. Easy to order, reliable in delivery.
No complaints at all.

This Fuji uses standard SD cards which makes it just as handy as any other camera (Fuji finally got away from expensive xD cards). I like the feel of the camera because it doesn't feel like a cube of platic, it feels like a real camera should. I have had no problems with the picture quality the other reviewers mentioned. I also find it quite easy to navigate. It seems to have good battery life and has been very reliable and inexpensive to use since it takes only 2 AA batteries. I would rate this camera at 4.5 stars.

This product I would have to say is good value for money. Although you may get 12.5MP HD camera (non SLR type) at the same price, this product does exceed those cameras by a far extent. It does all I needed it to do, very clear pictures, controlled shutter speeds and the optical zoom. However it does look like a toy beside the nikon SLRs and any other professional cameras. But I would definately recommend this product to budding photographers like myself!!

A lot is wrong with this camera except the image quality which is wonderful.

There is about half as much noise at the same ISO as my Canon point and shoots which is amazing. I wonder if Fuji can't say how good it is because it might be better than their upmarket cameras that are supposed to be low noise. Adequate for some sunsets, that's one of the major reasons I love it. The lens might not have much telephoto but that made it easy to manufacture a very good lens.

Variable shutter to 8 seconds in fireworks mode. Usable night mode with a tripod. ISO 64 to 1600 in "manual".

Excellent color.

I bought two as my observation is that when a camera this good comes along it is quickly superseded with something worse. This also gave me a spare battery.

To return to shoot mode press the shutter. This is really the best way to do it but they could have programmed both ways instead of the stupid message.

The software didn't do much except stop my card reader from working (Win 2K). At least it uninstalled neatly and now I use the reader.

The menus are in seemingly random order but include useful functions.

The corners are cut off at full wide. Big deal, with 8 megapixels there is plenty to crop out. Typical for little cameras.

The battery seems to run down over a few weeks if left in the camera. Best not to store the camera with the battery installed and carry a spare.

If the LCD screen has a vertical line through it when there is a bright light such as the sun it won't be on the picture, go ahead and shoot.

I have used this Camera for a couple of years now and am constantly impressed by the quality of the pictures and the video. I am not a Camera expert at all and couldn't tell you all about the various features the Camera has. What I can say is that I go to a lot of concerts and take photos and I've always been blown away by how good they come out.
Many people seem to have problems with the battery life, my suggestion is to get Lithium batteries. They have lasted up to five concerts before I have needed to change them. That's pretty good seeing that I often take between 200-300 pictures a concert (and a couple of videos as well).

My old digital camera broke, so I picked this one up as a last minute replacement before a trip. Got it based on price and reviews. I like photos and taking them, but am not a photographer. Looking to document adventures in my life more than do anything artistic.

This camera is easy to use. Was able to do everything I needed to do without reading the manual. Plugged it in my computer (Mac) and iPhoto came up and did everything I needed it to do. Easy as pie! And I am not a technical person, by the way. :)

What amazed me was the great color my photos has. Really bright, really sharp. Made me look like a much better photographer than I am.

Good size. Not the smallest, but comfortable to carry around with you, in a pocket or purse. Display is large enough to tell what is going on, although it's good to have a bit of shade for easy reading.

The last couple of cameras I have purchased have been Nikon. After the great experience with this one, I am definitely getting a Fuji when this one goes out. I expect that to be a few years from now though because it has all the features I need, it's small, and it is well constructed.

I wanted a camera that gave me the greatest possible versatlity without the inconvenience of lens changing with a digital SLR. This requirement has certainly been met, and the range of functionality was an added bones. My purchase was made having seen an older version of this camera in use by a member of the family; I had a feeling the results would be impressive and they certainly are. The reviews I read warned about the lack of fine control of zoom; and this certainly does interfere with picture composition at times. The rate of zoom can't be adjusted as far as I can see, but that uncertainty comes from the fact that the product seemed to have been made for the continental (non-UK, EU market) and there was no English handbook in the pack, much to my frustration. I'm still trying to work out what the buttons do. OK, there was an English handbook on CD, but the printed version would have been a lot more useful to me.

We bought this camera about a month ago and really like it. It is a rather hefty camera but it is very versatile and can do just about anything you want a camera to do and do it very well. This camera has a face detection that really works- much better than our canon a570. It has an image stabilizer that allows you to take clear pictures at full zoom. The zoom ring is very smooth and is easy to compose the shot. The movie mode has a good picture and allows you to change zoom but is a little slow for the focus to catch up. With a 4gig sd card you can shoot movie for an hour. The flash on camera works alright for short distances but if you want to take pictures further out you have to add an external flash on the hotshoe. It has very useful settings on the mode dial and also has an slr styled command dial for iso setting, picture review, exposure compensation, and a host of other settings. It's really quite handy to use the command dial once you get used to it. About the only thing that seems to come up a little short is the battery. I'm guessing about 200-250 shots per battery charge. The image quality of this camera is at the top of the heap as far as point and shoot cameras. It is not as good as upper end slr cameras but I think it is better than the entry level slrs with kit lens. The lens on this fuji is really sharp from wide angle to full zoom and the digital zoom on this camera is very good. The lens does distort a little at wide angle but not as bad as the last camera we had.(a nikon d80 with 18-200 vr lens) Overall fuji has made a very solidly built camera and I would recommend it highly. Although this is not a cheap camera if you compare it with any camera with this kind of zoom range and image quality it stacks up rather well. Good job Fuji!!!

This camera is great! In terms of photo quality it's not going to best a bigger bulkier camera - but it's VERY good, I would say better than most (all?) subcompact cameras in its class. The best part about this camera is that it's quick. It's quickness is a combo of two factors, design and processor. The sliding lens cover doubles as the power switch - it's very easy to pull it out and slide back the cover very quickly. If you have the flash disabled it's ready instantaneously, with flash it'll take just a second to charge. The focusing mechanism functions very fast and the auto exposure is very robust and can handle many situations - faster and better than other cameras I've used (the exposure is notably better than the F series in regular or high light level situations)

The construction of the camera (build quality) is incredible at this price point. It's really built solid - and has the finish of a luxury product. I have it in the brown color and have gotten many compliments. The logo on the front also lights up at power up and when a photo is taken. It's a nice touch that adds just a little extra polish; you can disable it if you like (another nice touch!). I've used Sony's offerings in this class (W50, W80) and they feel cheap by comparison.

I bought this a couple months ago - it's not a super new camera at this point, but it's still very current - especially with the "lower" resolution - you avoid the noise and file sizes of those first generation cameras with the 10-12 megapixel CCDs. Plus you're not paying out the nose for that higher pixel count which really doesn't help the quality of your photos. There is a newer version of this model (Z10), but I'm not a big fan of where they're taking it design-wise.

I also have a Fuji F30. Obviously the image quality of that camera is better with its bounty of manual options - however the 'F' series isn't the greatest in terms of compactness. The F30 also bothered me - it takes a while to get a decent picture - even longer to get the ideal exposure, there's just a lot of fiddling to do to get the job done - something that's not always possible in every situation. The Z5 is the opposite, you might not get the highest quality possible, but you're going to get a great shot in the shortest amount of time in just about all the situations the F30 can handle.

Low light performance isn't on par with the F series, but it's head and shoulders above everything else in its class.

Face detection works pretty well - not every time, but it generally does a good job regardless of light level and is a welcome addition.

My only quibbles with this camera are that the lens cover can sometimes slide open in your pocket, it would have been preferable to make it slightly harder to open, but it's minor - only happened a couple times so far. I also wish that there was another quality setting for the 3:2 aspect ratio - for the lowest compression level (best quality) you have to use the standard size. Fuji has another camera coming out that is similar in design to this model (I think it's going to be the Z100 - it's not on the site yet), but adds optical image stabilization. I'll probably pick that model up after it drops in price a bit. I really love my Fujiflm cameras, very high quality in every regard, definitely the best value out there.

Credentials: Advanced amateur, S100fs replaced Fuji S9000.

I wanted/needed more zoom and was intrigued about a camera designed with nature photographer in mind. . . was annoyed that Fuji went to a special battery and cautious about the reported 'major' problem with purple fringing - but decided to buy the S100fs anyway.

A) I have yet to be able to kill off the battery. I take mainly existing light photos with ALOT of zooming and changing settings - so almost the same as flash. . . I haven't even gotten a 'battery is half gone' indicator yet (after 295+ pictures on one charge over 4-5 days of shooting) - so that doesn't seem to be a problem.

B) OK - purple fringing - to be frank, I've had a HARD time getting it to do this, mainly because most of my shots are zoomed or wide-angled. Yesterday I tried really, really, hard to get the fringing to appear - it only shows up in shots at 55mm or so and was only really visible in a shot that I just wouldn't normally take - the sun was at an angle I didn't like and the sunlight was bouncing off the brick building, it was that bright out. Soooooooo, if you take a lot of pictures at 55 mm (why do you want an ultrazoom then) and like really bright light - then it's a concern.

C) I LOVE THIS CAMERA! There are some differences from the S9000 and lower series that is taking a bit of getting use to - i.e. only two positions on on/off switch - preview is achieved with another button on S100fs. They moved the macro button back to the 4-way on the back (instead of on the left side - for the S9000).

D) I have gotten some fantastic shots - for example, a damsel fly about 20-30 ft away (on a piece of grass) - I was able to zoom in, hit the 2x digital and get a incredible close up (with a little work - see below for webpage with example). The angle isn't the best, but it's a great example of what is possible with this camera! Insects can be a pain, since usually to get close enough to get a great, detailed, shot - it becomes obvious to them and they move.

E) I'm haven't tried much more than about 1/3 of the stuff available on this camera - but I am very, very, very happy with it.

I made up a webpage with some examples: [...]

Fuji film 8mp J-10 camera. I had trouble choosing this camera over a samsung 860. But I got a J-10 for a good price. Along with that , I already had some XD cards from my not working so good fuji A350. So at least I didn't need to buy SD cards. This zoom is alittle jittery over the samsung 860, but not by much. So I try not to use zoom if I can help it.
It takes great out-door pictues, but not as good INDOORS or longer distance indoors. I was never sure if it looked better with or without flash and somtimes get blurry without flash due to it probalby holding the shutter open longer without flash. All depends on distance and lighting indoors. I was getting used to using my wifes camera,, a sony cybershot DSCH-10 which took much better pics indoors. But it is a double the cost camera. I like that it also takes regular SD or XD cards, but manual says the video may be jumpy on the SD cards depending?? The olympus version of this says it takes Micro SD, not the full size sd,and you would need that stupid adapter thing, but don't quote me on that. I also was looking for a cam that took AA batteries due to availability, but once you get a few ion battery packs, you should be set. Batt life was acceptable, but factory batteries are $$$. I got a couple maximal power's off ebay cheap, and they seem to be ok, though may not last as long as original. Im very leary on no name batteries, but for $7-$14 for Two,, I can't complain. I wish it had a 5mp setting. It looks like it goes from 4mp to 8 and 8.2. Over-all, im happy with the camera for a lower cost or backup/ something small camera.

I ordered this camera on a Tuesday evening and it arrived, well packaged, on Thursday morning!! Fantastic delivery time!!
I chose this camera because I already own a Fuji and thought familiarity with the brand would help in learning how to use it. Additionally, I was looking for a camera with a viewfinder, and one which would use my existing xD memory cards.
I am amazed at the number of different modes and functions this camera has! I've only had chance to play with a few of them so far, my current favourite being sunset mode, as we've been having some great ones locally since the camera arrived.
I've been quite surprised at just how quickly I feel comfortable with the camera and it's operation - it's really easy and intuitive and the grip makes one-handed use a doddle, especially since the on-off switch, the shutter button, and the zoom control are all at the top of the grip. It's smaller than I expected and very lightweight even with 4 AA batteries in!
All in all I am delighted with this purchase and I know the camera will be well used to take lots of photos for a long time in the future!!

I work in community documentation, folkloristics, journalism, and oral history.

This is my field camera. I take pics for three column newsprint runs, digital interview projects that document people in their homes, and sense of place photography. I always shoot in auto, sometimes macro.

When set on the highest resolution, the images are about 3.2 to 3.3 in size (ok for large newsprint applications) and the shutter speed is quick. Quick.

Best of all, the camera is completely silent- no shutter speed sound to distract people like my friend's lastest pro canon. It's small, it's light, and it's affordable.

The flash is super bright (I don't usually use it) and will light up the night, literally. The video is more than sufficient, and is smooth in frames, with across the yard sound of kids talking to you coming in clear.

I have owned three since the s5000, and- even as a pro- have no plans to switch cameras. The worst I can say about it is the body is crafted out of cheaper materials than the s5000 was, and I'm not fond of the hinged part of the battery case. But, it hasn't broke yet, and I've had it since it first shipped, and I batter it in my purse daily.

Oh- without the flash battery life is excellent, and you always find a couple more aa batts no matter the time or place.

All photos at [...] were taken with this camera. Have a look at pottery wall for closeups, and "people" (esp. k & d) for moving action shots.

Considering another for work in schools with kids...

My camera was not one of those listed, but was very similar in shape and size to those that were, which probably accounts for the tight fit. The design is nice and provides good protection to the camera. If you need to carry other items such as mermory cards or spare batteries, a camera bag would be a better choice. Even so, this case would nicely fit in most camera bags and provide extra protection to the camera whether in or out of the bag.

The battery is some special flat model that takes, like, 10 minutes to charge. "Great," you say? Not hardly, because that's about how long it lasts, and, unlike my previous Fuji, which used AAs, there's no way that I know of to have another set of batteries charged and ready to go. Hence, the battery's ALWAYS dead, and is so as I type. I find this VERY poor indeed; this thing needs more charging than my cell phone, which is on 24/7. Considering the battery to be a "feature," that's why I gave "features" 1 star. I'm seriously unhappy with this camera since it's useless without power. I'd appreciate a bigger camera with bigger batteries that's a lot more useful in the end.

I've had this camera for a few years now and I like it for it's picture taking ability overall. However, the compatibility, or non-compatibility I should say, makes me crazy. It takes an xD card which is not compatible with the standard SD card reader that is built in to my computer or my portable card reader that accepts 6 formats, but not xD. This also means that if I have a problem with my card or want to share pictures with friends, I cant because everyone else is using SD cards. Also, the transfer cable is not a standard USB cable that most cameras use. It looks like one but the part that plugs into the camera is just a little more square than standard. So I always get it mixed up with all my other standard cables and end up loosing it.

If you plan to use this camera in isolation and are not concerned with the incompatibility of the card and the cable, then the camera is great. However, if you want a camera that allows flexibility in taking, transferring, and sharing pictures, I recommend getting camera more standard.

As a side note, I am also not happy with Fujifilm's contact us on the their website. They run you in circles and never actually give you an email address to make comments. So that is another x against them...

This is a great little camera, which replaces my worn out Konika Minolta, which was very similar.

I haven't had time to check the Fuji out fully, but the one thing that I find a tad annoying is the lack of zoom when in video mode. The Konica was pretty good at that, except for the noise of the zoom and the 'out-of-focus' image for a short while, but I could edit that out. But the Fuji (which is my 2nd Fuji because I loved the first one!) doesn't offer a zoom facility.....once the recording starts you are stuck on the focal length selected when you started.

The Fujifilm Finepix S100fs is a superb camera, in most instances exceeding expectations. Whilst I am not a Pro photographer I consider myself an able amateur and have used many cameras over the years. As I am traveling more I decided I wanted a replacement for my Pentax K10D DSLR - which is an excellent camera, on par if not exceeding the Canon and Nikon offerings in its range (sub $1000.00). Lugging extra lenses around when traveling can be a real chore - yet there has really been no alternative - until now.
The S100fs is a real DSLR alternative at last - and this is from a REAL USER - not someone who has just read reviews or posts on the Internet.

The image quality is magnificent. Fuji have outdone themselves with this lens, it is a step above most Tamron, Sigma and kit lenses and approaches the quality of the higher priced offerings of the big manufacturers. The PROOF is in the images. I have standard scenes I always photograph to test cameras - one of them of the lake view from the rear of my house. Using the Velvia film setting on the S100fs I was astonished at the images it captured - some of them exhibiting an almost 3D appearance. This camera has produced the best images of this scene I have taken with any camera!

There is a lot of talk about Purple Fringing - mostly by Pixel Peepers who have never held the camera but who inspect low grade images uploaded to the Internet and make derisory comments. I have found however that using the camera involved a learning curve that I hadn't expected. Some of my first images were not as good as I had hoped - but I concluded that the camera was better than what I was seeing. More careful handling and attention produced startlingly better results. Have I seen some purple fringing - yes - but LESS than in Tamron and Sigma lenses I own, some of which approach the cost of this camera itself. This is easily corrected in post processing however. Though as I have spent more time with this excellent camera I have seen it less and less - implying that most of what people are seeing is USER error and not due to the camera itself.

And let me say this - IMAGES IN POOR LIGHTING / Night Scenes ARE MAGNIFICENT - better than my K10D!

If you are looking for the BEST superzoom camera out there - this is it - by far. If you are looking for a DSLR - but cannot afford the investment of good quality lenses (don't fall for the "kit offerings") - this is it. Tired of lugging around countless lenses and accessories for your DSLR - give this a try. You will not be disappointed (as long as you persevere and learn how to use this camera).

Excellent model for the price. Fujifilm also provide excellent customer service via their website, truly amazing people.

The only negatives are that it is battery power hungry when using the flash and higher resolutions, and on my model the flash fails to pop up when required due to it sticking on occasion.... but other wise it is sturdy, easy to use and the picture quality it gives is excellent.

Update - had it a bit longer now, used it more and rate it 'ok'.

The zoom control is a real problem - it's just to fast and awkward to frame the picture.

With hindsight I should of tried before I bought so now would give it 3 stars and learnt not to give instant reviews but to leave it a while for the novelty of something new to wear off !

I find I use my old Samsung more because it just slips into the pocket, carry anywhere, point and shoot. The S2000 is slightly to large for the average coat pocket so ideally needs to be carried in a camera bag. It is a different type of camera.

I bought a S2000HD earlier this year, and was initially very pleased with it. Some of the buttons, though, were in awkward places, such that I was touching them inadvertently. My main gripe with this camera was in the quality of the LCD, which showed strange vertical flare and strange colours when pointed at certain light sources, especially bright (not direct) sunlight. I took it back to the retailer, who tested it against another S2000HD and that was the same also. In the end, I could not accept the stange LCD, so I sold it on eBay.

ilooked around for a good easy to work camara for the wife to use on a day trip, this was the one she wanted as it felt good to hold and easy to work with its easy auto settings. comes with a sholder strap and also you get a lens cap, plus normal energizer non rechargable batterys but i would use 2500mah energizer aa rechargables or better as this camara drinks batterys for a living and takes 4 aa size ones. also comes with a well thought out user manual if you wish to set this up for better shots and settings. this feels well made and takes xd or standard sd or hc sd cards in the one slot. some might find it a bit on the big size but i like it as i alway manage to brake all my camaras zoom lens on the small compacts this as no pop out zoom lens just built in zoom on a big len so is perfect for me.

this s5800 take clear nice shots on auto settings. as a pop up flash that i thought was prity cool as i did not know this when i brought it from asda as there demo had no batterys in in the shop. amazons price is a bit cheaper than asda's but not by much just £10 less, but to be fair asda gave me 50 free photo printouts and a keyring to use in there print shop with there deal and i would could not chance item in the post and needed it that same day plus i like to look at my camaras before i buy, also with the asda deal it was covered by there no messing 1 year cover and 30 day change your mind deal. so if you want a good price amazon is the one with free delivery of 3 days, if you want it now and live near a asda store go and get one there with free photo prints and there money back warranty.

as you will see by other reviews a lot of people can't be wrong as it as a good feedback responce and i for one would recommend it anyday. 9/10 only because it needs four top spec rechargable batterys or a dc adapter as its power hungry.

get one, its a super bargain.

I bought this camera with high expectations. It was supplementing my (4 year old) Olympus C-755UZ. I needed it to take pictures of friends, or slip in my pocket to take on the go easily. However, I was not necessarily expecting it to be comparable in image quality of an SLR, I figured it would surpass my outdated Olympus, but it didn't. It claims to have less noise, but really there is more noise in lower ISO settings than on most other cameras, even though there is relatively low noise at higher ISOs than most. Also, when the ISO is in the auto setting, it tends to boost the ISO way higher than it needs to be resulting in an image that is rarely blurry but very grainy. Also, there is a weak macro function, that struggles to focus in most situations. So it probably sounds like I am totally bashing this camera, but it makes up for it in color accuracy and functionality. The camera powers up incredibly fast, there is very little shutter lag, and the flash charges quickly. However, it tends to struggle to focus in lower light situations, contrary to its claims. Also, the menus are intuitive and even though the controls may be small and squished, they work well and are easy to get used to. The LCD is also amazing. Coming from a screen that is 1/2 the size of this, I am spoiled and it makes me not want to use my Olympus. Skin tones are very accurate, and the manual setting has quite a few white balance modes that are effective. Overall, it is not the most amazing camera as far as image quality goes, but for $130 bucks, it is hard to beat.

UPDATE (issue began 4/2/2007-now its 7/5/2007 and the issue still isn't resolved): After several weeks of use, black spots began appearing on my photos. I called Fuji, and they told me to pack it, fill out a repair sheet and send it in (I had to pay shipping for the way there). The repair took over a month (from the time it left my hands to the time it came back), far more than their 7 day turnaround time. When I opened the box up, the lens was reinstalled at an angle, and it caused it to move slowly, grind, and leave visible markings along the lens shaft. I took a few pictures, and when I retracted the lens, it jammed and said "lens error". I immediately called Fuji, (might I also mention that they are based out of New Jersey, and are as hostile and unhelpful as the sterotype suggests), but the woman I spoke to sent me a prepaid shipping label, no questions asked. So after another 3 weeks, I recieved it back again, only to find that contrary to the numerous phone conversations during the repair and emails saying the 2nd repair would be covered by the warranty, the rejected it, and spent 3 weeks NOT repairing my camera. I called Fuji once again and spoke to the repair manager, who assured me that it would be expedited, the repair would unconditionally be covered, and that he would personally inspect the camera before it left. Well its been 3 weeks since I sent it in, called twice. First on 6/29 - it will be ready in one week. Then again 7/3, and they told me TWO TO THREE MORE WEEKS! That is the opposite of an expedited repair if you ask me. So when it works, its a great camera, but getting it repaired takes over a 1/4 of a year of dealing with rude people.

**FINAL UPDATE** In September, I finally gave up and called the credit company to take action and reimburse me on grounds of a defective product. The requirement for this was attempting to return it to the retailer, which I hadn't even thought of doing so far because the product was outside of the 30-day return window. Well when I called amazon, to my surprise, they agreed to take the product back for a FULL REFUND!! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you Amazon! AMAZON IS THE BEST! People question me about buying big-ticket items online in case there's a problem, but this is why Amazon exists! Thank you Amazon! I bought a Sony W80 instead, and am very pleased.

I was taken aback by the handful of one and two star ratings this camera received. Frankly, I couldn't imagine anything but 4's and 5's.

The first thing I fell in love with was the Fuji's vivid color. The anti-shake function works perfectly. So even hand held shots remain sharply in focus. Sport mode? Well, I'd say a ball frozen mid-air over home base, would qualify as a sweet shot. Macro? I've captured dew drops on spider webs that looked like enormous jewels with every flower and tree nearby clearly reflected.

And that's the problem with customer reviews. Often the malfunction is not the equipment but the people using the equipment. I mean no insult here. I just wish people would make certain "before" they write a review that it's really the item and not the operator. Reviews influence choices.

As for Fuji's service....that I can't speak to. I've had no problems with it and I've had my S8000fd approximately 2 years. I take it everywhere and will shoot everything and anything. So it gets a work out. Nothing has fallen off, fallen short, or in anyway disappointed.

Basically, if you're pondering the notion of buying this camera, don't let the handful of bad reviews here sway you over-much.

PS. I don't work for Fuji, honest. But I am attached to my camera. Which probably explains my instant jump into the defensive. UGH! I'm owned by a camera. Go figure.

HD Video quality is great, with good colour correction. Zoom is heavy handed most of the time and motor noise is significant. File format is MPEG-3 so you need to put the files through (eg) Avidemux to produce AVI files which can be easily edited in low cost or free editors.
Autofocus and zoom work continuously in video mode which is an improvement on previous models.
There is a stills mode, with features like the ability to shoot in burst mode in a range of resolutions, and a super macro mode that lets you get as close as 1cm to the subject. Video quality and the addition of lots of stills camera functions with full manual control make this one of the best value cameras on the market at the moment.
Memory cards can be had for under £10 for 8Gig if you look around.
An ideal choice if you want to get into HD video and want full stills capability too.

The Battery Meter - is rubbish, comes on way too early. The battery warning comes on after just a few minutes shooting. During a test in which I tried to drain the batteries using the discharge option, it was taking so long I decided to leave it in video recording mode to see if that would be quicker. Of course the battery warning light was on by now. So far, the thing has chugged away for over 45minutes.
