I received this kit today and it looks like everything is well made. Haven't had a chance to test out the functionality and durability yet, but I feel like overall it's a good value for your money. I don't know why I was expecting a bigger tripod because I know in the description it says "tabletop", but it is 4.5" tall - just an FYI.

The memory card and the NiMH batteries with charger is certainly a good buy. The camera bag is not of great quality, but it is good for the money that you pay. In all, it is OK for the pricing.

This is a good buy, cases usually don't come this sturdy. Only concern was the loosly attached strings in the inside which I will be cutting out, other than that it's a great fit & ships fast too! Delivery estimate was dead on.

I have been overwhelmed with the simple complexity of this camera.
Takes pictures anywhere under most conditions very easily.
All options are within finger reach and can be changed very quickly.
Tip- read the manual and keep it with you while you get use to the options.

Having owned a Fuji F602 Zoom for many years, I was looking forward to receiving this gift from my wife. The 602 image quality (bearing in mind it is a 3MP camera) was fantastic producing clear precise images across a range of speeds and apertures. Its 'auto' setting also produced excellent results.

So it came as a surprize when I downloaded my first images from the 2000HD that they all appeared blurred - and those taken using the integral flash were all overexposed.

I tried the camera on many of the other settings and eventhough the images were better, they were still blurred and no way matched my old camera, despite offering a 10MP resolution.

Having finally tried and failed to produce some quality images, I felt that perhaps there was a problem with the lens - and have therefore returned the camera to Amazon.

It may well be that the camera that I received was faulty - and is not a true reflection of the model, but paying £160 I did expect similar or better results to my previous Fuji.

That said, the camera is laden with many useful features including the zoom bracketing (which takes three shots of the same image at different zoom settings simultaneously).

Having been a real fan of fuji cameras, I now feel dissapointed and will probably be looking at another brand in future.

Ive owned the D200, and controls and build aside, these are two different cameras. Surprisingly, this camera's nearest competitor isnt the Nikon D200 - it is the Canon 5D. Of course, the Canon clearly bests the s5 on resolution as it should. But that's it. The Fuji gives up little else to the Canon 5D but speed.

However, since the obvious comparison is between the s5 and D200, the s5 is clearly superior to the D200 on image quality, particularly right out of the camera. In speed of operation however, the D200 leaves the s5 in the proverbial dust.

The Nikon D200 is sure and fast, very fast. Like all the latest digital Nikon's, they will keep shooting for extended periods. However, the images demand you tweak the camera and do copious amounts of post-processing. The Fuji is more deliberate. It is fast enough to get out of its own way and get the shot and as well as the next, but not fast enough to keep shooting under demanding conditions, at which the Nikon excels. It isnt that the s5 is sluggish, it is that the Nikon is just so fast.

However, once you understand the reason for this relative slowness, you can deal with it. Again, it's all about the images.

The Fuji will produce stunning images from RAW files. It will do beautiful images straight from the camera. If you are a JPEG shooter and hate processing images on the computer, this is the camera for you.

Although the metering is very, very accurate under all but the most backlit conditions, it has a tendency to underexpose the images in anything less than sunlight, so exposure compensation is a must. The good news there, is that unlike most other cameras Ive used, where exposure compensation can be hit or miss - or thoroughly ineffective, compensation is even and responsive. This keeps me from having to fiddle with metering options trying to get the proper exposure. A seriously underrated feature of the camera.

Before the v1.06 firmware update, I was not impressed with the Automatic White Balance, having to constantly change the custom white balance, particularly with street lighting or ANY kind of flourescent lighting. Charged-gas lighting would give a nasty yellow or green cast to the images. After the update, the AWB is stunning, able to handle almost any lighting thrown at it. Since the update, I rarely touch the white balance settings. I simply dont have to. Amazing.

Also, before the update - the images would go "Blue" under strong light and deep shadows, with a deep magenta-ish cast at night. After the update, that tendency has been minimized and the images are far better balanced - giving that true Fuji color without overdoing it either way.

If you get a unit without the latest firmware, upgrade it at once. Period. This update gives me the camera I expected out of the box.

So, the good news: The images are worth every penny you pay.

The only way I can put it - standard, out of camera images often look like HDR images with unreal detail in both shadows and highlight. When you get that characteristic glossy look from a shot, you will involuntarily gasp.

More good news: For low light images, this camera is nothing short of amazing. I shoot primarily at night and in low light, and I rarely, almost never - shoot above ISO 1250. I have shot (using a f/2.8 17-55mm Nikkor) at ISO 2000 in near darkness, and the images came out as if I had studio lights with VERY little noise. And thats another thing, noise is near nonexistent on the vast majority of my images, and what there is has a nice even film-like grain, not blotchy or nasty as you would see on a D200 shooting above ISO 400.

However, all this goodness comes at a price. The high quality images are HUGE. A JPEG file set at the highest quality (FINE) takes up 5 - 7 megs. A RAW file averages 25 megs. This is why the camera doesnt feel as fast as the Nikon, as it is transferring massive amounts of data through the buffer to the card. You will start looking for large and very fast CF cards as well as upgrading your storage in short order.

The camera is expensive compared to the D200, but it is definitely worth the premium if you demand the highest quality images. To bring out the best in this camera, you need the highest quality lenses. It is also murder on sloppy camera technique, so be sure to avoid shake.

In all good conscience, I cannot rate the camera as 5 stars, but it is definitely a 4.5 - 4.75, even at the price.

If I had to choose between the D200 and S5, the S5 wins hands down. In fact, I would get a D2Xs as a speedy backup to this camera, not the D200. My wish would be if Fuji decided to put this sensor and technology into the body of a D2Xs. Then Id probably give it 5 stars.
-----------
(Edit)

So, after 5 months and 35,000 images later...

For image settings I dont fark around with the film simulation

I've owned this camera for a year now and absolutely love it. This camera is easy to use, takes great pictures and I don't have to lug around a bunch of extra lenses. Unfortunately, the camera strap worked its way loose from the body of the camera, resulting in it falling on the concrete. It still takes good pictures, but the auto-focus is noisy and very slow :( I've just ordered the Fuji FinePix S200EXR as a replacement. I hope it's as good as this camera has been!

I purchased this with every intention of taking photography much more seriously. However, this camera is able to deliver exceptional quality photographs without having the need to know everything there is to know about the art!
I have had a great deal of fun with this, and have taken great shots in a variety of scenes. For the price this delivered exceptional value, with quality and flexibilty.
I would highly recommend to anyone who wishes to take the first step from a standard camera but does not want to invest as much time and money in the more expensive DSLRs out there.

The Movie feature is also excellent. I hadnt really paid much attention to it, but later discivered it produces HD quality movies with zoom features whilst filming. Better than my recently purchased camcorder.

Watch out for the accessories linked via amazon. I bought a camera case which was much too small!

I've had this camera for a couple of years now and carry it in my pocket pretty much everywhere I go. Takes pretty good pics, decent battery life, and has given me only 1 problem since I've owned it - sometimes (rarely) the lens gets partially extended in my pocket and stays open (probably jostled it while in my pocket). It's usually just a matter of removing the battery and replacing it to get it to reset.
Bottom line - It's a nice handy go-anywhere camera.

I bought the black version of this little camera about three years ago and it has been the best value buy I think I have ever purchased. I am an avid Youtuber (Maybrick44 if you want to check out some video's taken with this camera) and so this camera has had a lot of use in all weathers. It takes great quality films for its size and good quality pictures to. I am no whizz kid with technical equipment either so I am unable to use this to get the best out of it but, even as a 'point and click' merchant, I have taken some great pics.

Like all of the modern stuff these days, it isn't straight forward to get used to at first and you can get your settings mixed up if you don't know what you are doing. This said however, there is a handy 'reset' setting that can get you out of trouble and return the camera to its original settings (ideal for 'point and clickers!') There are a few drawbacks with the camera but nothing major. For example, when taking pictures at 7 mega pixels, the camera takes a while to process your shots. This means that you are unable to shoot a succession of shots quickly. I also find that the 10X Zoom is occasionally insufficient but lets be fair here we are talking about a cheap camera! You will spend quite a bit of money on batteries if you take a lot of film but I reckon I get around 2-3 hours of footage for a set of Duracell batteries which isn't bad really.

Once you do get used to using this, you will be keen to get out and use it. Believe me, if a technophobic like me can learn to use this to ANY degree it must be user friendly! HA HA

No, I have taken thousands of pictures and hundreds of films with this and would not hesitate to buy another should anything happen to mine.

A real bargain.

More than adequate and a good price. I did remove the tacky label for two reasons: (1) it was tacky and (2) the pin backings on the inside of the case were only covered my a thin piece of fabric that fell off and I was concerned the pins might scratch the camera. There are two small holes on the front of the case, but that is not a big deal.

I am a Fuji fan anyway, so lets get that out of the way first.
I previously owned a FinePix S5700 which was a very good all rounder. For Christmas 2009 My wife bought me a Toshiba Camelio HD video camera (which i hinted for) but to put it mildly it was rubbish..rubbish rubbish.
My wife took it back got a refund.
My wife then bought me S2000HD via my amazon account (unfortunately the first one never turned up). All I can say is WOW
The picture quality is fantastic even in very low light and the HD video is better than anything i have seen on any HD video camera.
The camera is very easy to use and has some very good professional features, which would give some high end Nikons or Cannons a run for there money. Its also worth mentioning that the S2000HD which I got from Amazon has the Version 2 firmware, which is not even listed on the official Fuji website (The latest version on Fuji website is version 1.1)
The price on Amazon is exceptional good value for money as you dont just get the camera you get the full HD connection kit and remote control which is normally £35.00 to £50.00 alone.
My tip would be to buy a screen protector for the LCD screen.

This is not a indepth review, as you can see but if you are thinking about buying this camera "BUY IT NOW" you wont regret it.

I've been a long-time user of SLR's but was finally getting fed up with the additional lenses etc etc. I bought this with a view to replacing my Canon; with some trepidation it has had it's first "proper" holiday to India recently. I had been to India before (with my Canon) and was blown away by the unique light in that country. Anyway the Fuji performed very well I have to say - not quite the richness of colour as the Canon captured but very acceptable nonetheless.
There are a few downsides;
1. I would prefer proper lithium batteries - however AA's are easily found in an emergency, and the batteries supplied retained their power pretty well so it turned out to be a non-issue.
2. No thread = no filter - a drawback for me. I'm sure you could codge something together if so minded.
3. A plastic lens cover - how cheap and nasty is that as it clatters around.
4. The digital zoom - switch it off. Not unique to this camera of course but it is very poor.

So I would say there are no deal-breakers there. All in all I think this is a very good camera.

The three inch LCD is phenomenal! The entire backside is the screen! Some complain that it is a fingerprint magnet (w/nothing to grip) but I completely disagree. This is a camera that has to be held differently. Instead of grabbing it, you hold it. (It rests in your fingers.) Imagine "framing" a picture w/your hands, and that is how you hold it. Is it 'that' different? Not really, when you put it into perspective, just be sure to use the wrist strap. (The Fujifilm F20, for example, has the same screen size, yet bec. of the handle/gripping area to the right of the screen, it takes away from the overall feel of the large screen and really diminishes the `wow' factor.)

The V10 is surprisingly heavy/solid for a camera of this size. With such small dimensions, I would have expected a `lighter' camera. You can take that as either a plus or a minus...but I have felt larger cameras that had nothing but a plastic body and that felt cheap (prone to destruction) but this baby is solid. All metal housing. I read a few reviews where some preferred that the the AV-out and the DC-in flaps were solid, hinged doors but I am okay w/the plastic/rubber flaps. I guess the same could be said for the plastic tripod mount (I read that in other reviews, too), but for my purposes I won't really be using a tripod w/this camera.

My original purchase was to replace/upgrade an older (4-5 years) point & shoot digital camera. What I have come to like (appreciate) of this camera (besides the monster LCD) is the thin size and small, "pocketability". In a case I bought off the rack, it fits comfortably in my jacket/coat pocket (or a woman's purse). I cannot do that with point & shoot cameras that have the right-handed, gripping area. I could get a comparably priced camera w/higher megapixels but it will be a lot bulkier (and since I don't regularly make prints higher than 5x7, the 5 megapixels of this Fuji is fine).

As for the high ISO, I would advise you to not use that feature. Unless you are very familiar w/that feature and how it works on this model, you may be disappointed when getting your shots developed. (The graininess really shows in the pictures.) If that feature is important to you (a lot of night, low-light or action shots), then you should really consider a different (more expensive) camera that has very good image stabilization. I've had point & shoot and digital SLRs and this will definitely not give you the images of an SLR. (I actually compared images w/a Canon Rebel.) If you take a lot of pictures in low light or action shots, this `may' not be the camera for you...but for a point & shoot this handles well.

I am aware that this camera cannot do it all (when it comes to picture quality), but that is more than acceptable to me when you look @ its features, for the price. (But if you want a camera to do it all, stop reading here and pay more for something else!!!) For the money ($[...], including shipping, from another vendor in Feb. 07), this was a steal. (Granted, the camera was released @ the beginning of '06, but its features still ring true one year later...and that tells a lot about the design behind the camera.) The large screen, sorting images by date, 30 image viewer @ once, etc. are all amazing. I have had many digital cameras over the years, and this is great for the price I paid. (My family was very impressed at one of the nephew's birthday parties.)

Battery power is better than I expected. Being accustomed to changing out AA batteries from my previous point & shoot (and having charged spares in the bag), I expected the proprietary Fuji battery to not have much life. Well I was wrong. I had the fear, from other reviews, that I would need to get a back-up (and I may in the future) but I used this camera for a wedding & reception in which I completely filled a 1 GB card w/pictures and movie clips and the battery level never dropped one bar....and now I don't have to carry around all those extra AAs.

In general, the menu selections/settings are very intuitive, and start-up (from when you turn it on) is very fast. The movie clip feature is quite amazing. Hooking it up to the TV w/the accompanied cable and it looks very much like a camcorder. (Getting good quality movie clips was important to me when I chose this camera.)

Keep in mind, the different sources of information that are out there: this is the V10, and whether the camera (on the outside) is stock silver, gun metal gray or orange, it is still the same camera. (Hint: it doesn't matter what color the outside is, the inside is still the same and will produce the same results...so, if you want this model specifically in orange, and end up reading a review of one that is gun metal gray, it should be the same thing.)

For an entry level camera, or even an upgrade, this camera (besides its low price) will outweigh many competitors. While I am

I purchased this camera 2 years ago and am still very happy with it. It has the feel of an SLR and the configuration of the body makes it very easy to grip for 1 hand shooting. The picture quality is very good although I've found that doing a quick auto fix on a photo editing program really optimizes the photos. It does particularly well in interiors with natural light. I bought the camera because of the adjustable lens length - it goes from a slight wide angle to a fairly long telephoto which has really helped reduce baggage while traveling. My previous camera required an attachment for macro photography but macro capability is built into this camera. I was surprised by the video capabilities of the camera which I never saw mentioned in the Fuji's advertisement for this camera. The picture is very clear and good in low light although the video function requires a fixed lens length which means that you cannot zoom in or out in video mode. The camera construction seems to be of high quality with exception of the small plastic cover for the usb connection and power cord. Still after 2 years of steady use, the plastic cover is still intact so I guess that it must be more durable than it appears.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this camera to a discrimination friend particulary one who wants to travel light but still have a lot of flexibility in getting the perfect shot.

I own several digital cameras including a Nikon digital SLR, but I wanted something that I could carry with me to have available for the photos I constantly miss since I don't want to carry a large camera around with me. But there's no point in having a portable camera if it doesn't perform. Here's a list of some of the features that were important to me. Surprisingly, this camera met most of them.

SIZE

This camera is tiny and easily fits unnoticably into a pocket. Very portable. CHECK.

CONSTRUCTION

Mostly metal, feels solid in my hand and weighs more than you would expect for such a small package. Normal Fujifilm quality. CHECK.

LCD

Wow, oh wow. The huge screen dwarfs anything I've seen on other cameras. Clear and bright in all light levels and my wife can even see it without her glasses! In just the 10 days I've owned this camera, several complete strangers have commented on the screen and have asked for a better look. Also, there is a one-button-push image brightening function for bright light conditions. Simple and effective. CHECK.

EASE OF USE

Sometimes you just want a point and shoot camera, no fuss, no drama and be prepared to live with the limitations. Everything about my new camera had to be simple - my wife was tired of not being able to use any of our other cameras! The V10 couldn't be simpler - power on, wait about 1.2 seconds, point, shoot. There's some more advanced features buried in the menu system but if you're buying this camera, you probably won't need them or use them. CHECK.

IMAGE QUALITY

Take a look at the sample photo I uploaded to the image gallery. I am absolutely delighted with the results produced by this camera - with one caveat - the scene must be well lit with available light. For vacation photos, this camera will excel. Quality can be superb with low noise levels, sharp images and vibrant (but exaggerated) color rendition which is slightly blue biased. Forget about the flash - it's almost useless except for shots at no more than 6' distance and it WILL produce red-eye (easily corrected in most photo editing packages). CHECK.

ZOOM CAPABILITY

The 3.4x zoom is more than adequate for most needs. When you handle this little gem, you will wonder how the heck Fuji managed to fit all this into such a small package. A miracle of engineering. CHECK.

FEATURES

Easy playback was important. On this camera it's the press of one button and half a second later the image is displayed on the LCD. A half press of the shutter button and you're back to picture-taking mode.

Video was not so important to me but it's actually very good. The only limitation is that you can't zoom once you've started recording but if you want video, buy a video camera!

Games. Yes, you read that right. I have absolutely no need of games on my camera but the V10 has 4 built in. They seem like late 1980's style games but why would you need them? Well, have you ever traveled with a grumpy child who is 'bored' every 5 minutes. Hand them your camera so they can play the games and although initially they'll probably laugh at the quality, I bet they'll play them and make your trip a lot more enjoyable!

Other features include an easy macro mode, easy deletion of images oh, and a sensible length 'lanyard' style strap. For a point and shoot, I'd say this camera is very well featured. CHECK

CAPACITY

There's nothing more annoying than running out of either battery or memory card space. For day to day use, I have found the rechargeable Fuji battery lasts longer than I need. Unfortunately the camera must be plugged in to recharge the battery and it's a pretty slow process (3 hours plus) but if you remember to charge it overnight, you'll be fine. I have already bought a spare battery and will charge it up for use as a spare if I ever do use up the first battery in one day.

Here's my first complaint about this camera - what on earth are Fujifilm thinking shipping it with a 16mb XD card? Save yourself time and order a 1GB card with the camera - that's large enough for 820+ photos at normal resolution. Yeah, the XD card is not as popular as some other formats, but it is VERY fast - much faster than SD cards.

My only other complaint is the charger is far too big - why not just have a small device into which the battery slots? The 'power-brick' and cable approach is so 1990's.

So, overall, I give the Fuji Finepix V10 an enthusiastic thumbs-up. At this price point, you will not be disappointed.

I owned a Fuji Finepix S1000fd which was horrible so I returned it and after much research, purchased this S100fs.

What a fantastic camera! Shorter lag time than I have experienced with other digital cameras...I don't miss many pictures of my four children. I'm pleased with the higher zoom ability.

The lens is threaded so the cap locks on (instead of constantly falling off like the one on the model I recently returned) and it accomodates thin filters.

On the S1000fd, I was displeased with the picture quality. It was noisier and the colors were not as vivid as on this S100fs, especially on pictures taken indoors with a flash. See my review on the the other camera. There I talk about my uncle's Panasonic Lumix. Initially I was very impressed with those pictures, but after comparing them to this Finepix s100fs, the Fuji's color saturation is better. The Panasonic had high contrast...light/dark and couldn't capture the in-between areas as well. The Fuji does a better job showing less contrast and captures more of the colors in the in-between areas. In terminology from radiography, this Fuji's picture quality displays less contrast and more density so I see more of the color instead of light and dark...a challenge for any camera on an automatic setting.

I have photographed flag football, dancing, rainbows, Arizona Memorial on a sunny day, people, landscape, plants, koi splashing (Dole Plantation), just to name a few subjects. I am so happy with this purchase!

While it is large, it's easier than lugging around my old SLR because the lens is already on it....no changing lenses, which, four children later, is not something I feel like doing anymore.

I am enjoying my new toy and am experimenting with the many settings/options available on it. (Like my old SLR, Canon Rebel XS, it has automatic, aperture and shutter priority, manual, and other settings on the scroll down menus).

The built on flash is much better than the other one was AND this one has a hot shoe! I'd like to buy a flash for it. (edit 4/17/11: I now use a Vivitar 285HV flash with this camera)

The LCD display tilts...a nice feature if you want to hold the camera up high or down low to photograph a subject.

It has raw, which I am reading about in a digital photography book, for those who are interested in that.

My husband and I opted for a Fuji because we've been so pleased with the picture quality of our old point and shoot Fuji. This camera is meeting and exceeding our expectations. I highly recommend it.

i bought this camera to replace my finepix s5500 which was a good little camera but the very small LCD screen was getting a little hard to see as i am getting older, so i went for another finepix moddle the s 2000hd, i have only had it a couple of days and it really performs well with loads of little features the other one did not have , like high speed shooting is great you will be hard pushed to miss that perfect shot, face detection and antie shake modes are allso very good,, the 15x zoom is fantastic, and of course the hd , plug this camera into a high def tv and it really comes alive pin sharp pictures and video just fantastic all in all a great little bridge camera and it really out performs my old one and to be honest that finepix s5500 was a good camera but i wouldnt swap it for this one, the only thing i found wrong is that the way the lens cap is teatherd to the neck strap it tends to rubb over the mic when taking video you can really hear it on play back so hold it or hook it up over the lens or some thing like that other wise no problems good job finepix from a happy chappy..............

I think this camera is good, the video is also good, but to have audio and not able to disable it, is pointless unless you enjoy the sounds of the motors inside, while trying to focus, and while zooming, mostly all sound is taken over by the sound of zooming and focusing. some people may find these sounds acceptable, i like to show people videos ive made on the tv, and their is not a video ive made yet that does not mean i have to turn the sound off completely. If they had made this camera without autofocus and zoom features, it would have been a great improvement. did no one ask "what the hell is all that noise?". I am now looking into destroying the built in mic, that will cure the problem once and for all. Oh i have just discovered that when i play back my movies there is a yellow/white pixel or two, that is layed over on top of 90% of everything i film. this would be no problem for me, but as i brought the camera with the intent on uploading clips to stock sites, its now useless for that. Going to have to save up again for another camera i guess as i dont think i have any rights in this issue. a certain percentage of pixels can be missing according to what ive read.

I purchased my camera from a seller on Amazon. After using compact cameras I felt I needed something a bit more substantial to get to grips with.
It sits well in the hand and all the controls are well set out and easy to get to. For me the ability to turn of the screen and see everything, including the settings, through the viewfinder is a blessing.
The first photo I took was on auto mode, (obvious choice I thought), but on high resolution the result was not good, the image was all grainy, however, the zoom function picked up a fly on a caravan at over 100 feet so no problem there.
After a bit of research and question asking on the fujifilm forum, I had the answer. The auto mode on the s8100fd has the ISO set high at 400, too high for taking normal photos at high resolution, switching to P mode (which is sort of semi auto), I was able to turn it down to 100 and taking the pic again, I got the result I was looking for.
Startup is fast as is AF and fast zoom, shooting in bracketing mode is great, 3 shots taken at different zooms on one click, and burst mode will blow you away with near video speed in frames per second. The zoom is very fast and by enabling digital zoom, you can go way over the 18x for real distance shots.
I did notice the purple in the viewfinder as in a previous review, but this is only when auto focusing is operating in bright sunlight, at other times, the view is as it should be.
For a beginner moving up from a pocket camera, but not yet ready for a full blown DSLR camera, the S8100fd is an excellent choice and with a bit of practice you will get professional looking photos. Just persevere with it, read the manual, and take lots and lots of photos but not in auto mode!

If you have a Fujifilm S1500 (excellent camera) and want a case for it this might suit you. It's smart and stylish, and the camera fits in it snugly. Some reviewers of the camera have commented on its tendency to shed its lens cap in the case - it won't with this one. If you want a nice case that holds the camera just right and doesn't look baggy this is the one for you.
On the other hand if you want a good amount of extra storage for batteries, spare memory card, cleaning cloth etc., then the baggy cases have the advantage. This one has a pouch in the lid you can use for batteries or a cloth and in theory for the spare card if you feel you need one - though personally I wouldn't risk using it for this, too much risk of it falling out. This bag also doesn't have a strap of its own, so has to be put somewhere you won't forget about it when you're using the camera.
It's going to be very much a matter of individual preference - this nice-looking case and perhaps using your jacket pockets if you want to carry extras, or a more practical less stylish one.

I bought this camera essentially as a megapixel upgrade from my Finepix s5000, which served me very well but produced images only at 3.2MP. I am sorely disappointed with the s8000, so much so that I sometimes bring out the s5000 if I know I won't have time to set up the shot carefully. The main cons to this camera are:

1) Very slow. Lack of speed is the major problem with this camera. It is slow to start up, slow to transfer images to memory, and very slow between depressing the fire button and the picture being taken. Many shots are lost due to this delay.

2) Poor "Auto" mode image quality. Sets ISO too high & shutter speed too low, producing grainy and/or blurry photos even under normal lighting conditions. Since Auto mode is a failure, I have to manually adjust the settings for each shot.

3) Poor image clarity. Images are frequently slightly, but still noticeably, blurry. I suspect this is a lens problem, since getting the optics right on an 18x zoom lense that can also do supermacro would be extremely difficult. I think they tried to jam too many optical features into one camera body.

4) Autofocus is quite unreliable. You really have to watch what it grabs on to.

5) Flash is even harsher than it was on my s5000.

On the bright side, as with other Fuji cameras I've used/owned, the body is sturdy and quite comfortable in the hand, image transfer is pretty fast, and navigating the interface is quite intuitive.

Even for the price, I would never recommend that anyone purchase this camera. There are many available for the same price that are far better (and now, of course, this camera is also outdated).

I had been seeking an inexpensive, pocket sized, minimum 6MP camera that used SD memory, and AA batteries, when I spotted Fuji's A610 in a local store. After giving it a quick trial, I ordered one from the good people at Amazon. The Fuji met the parameters, and the low price was the deciding factor. I have not used the camera extensively, but these are my early impressions.

The A610's new Super CCD imager produces very good results in a variety of situations both indoors and outdoors, however it is not ideal for capturing action shots. Color accuracy of the images is excellent, with good saturation and reasonably good resolution for a point and shoot. ISO ranges from 100 to 400, and is selected automatically. The equivalent range of the zoom lens is 39mm to 117mm. Optical zoom is 3X, digital zoom is 6.2X.

The display is used to frame your shots, there is no viewfinder. Being able to see the screen, particularly outdoors, is critical when shooting. When set at higher brightness levels, the display is fairly visible even when used in bright sunlight. If needed, there is a button that bumps that up the brightness in the shooting mode, for about 10 seconds. The focusing point is limited to the center of the display.

The A610 has 17 shooting modes, including some unusual situations like `underwater', `beach', `fireworks', `party' and `snow'. They are accessed through a menu rather than a selector dial, which is very inconvenient. True manual control is not possible in the so-called `manual' mode. The `auto' mode will probably be the default setting for most users. Experiment with the modes, and see which ones produce results you like.

Press the `on' button, and the camera is ready to shoot in about 4 seconds. After taking a photo, the image remains on the display for approximately 3 seconds, then the screen goes blank for 1 to 4 seconds as the image is saved. When the display comes back on, you can take another photo. This cycle usually takes between 5 and 6 seconds. This is fairly long, so if you miss your shot, waiting to take another could become frustrating. Factor in the normal point and shoot shutter lag, and it means that you really need to concentrate, anticipate the action, and make your shot count in critical situations, or when shooting moving subjects.

Reviewing images is best done out of direct light. The resolution on the large 2.5" display is good. You can zoom in and out, and pan, so you should be able to tell if you have nailed the shot. The display screen is slightly recessed into the body, and is susceptible to damage if left unprotected. A protective cover would be a very welcome accessory. The buttons on the back for macro mode, increasing LCD brightness, flash mode control and timer mode, are useful, but a mode selector dial is really missed.

No memory card is provided with the camera, though it does have 10MB of internal memory. The A610 accepts either SD memory cards, or XD picture cards up to 2GB. Fuji recommends Sandisk Extreme III SD cards. I used a different brand, which may have affected the times I measured. While saving photos takes some time, there is virtually no delay when saving movies.

The camera uses two AA batteries. Fuji recommends using either alkaline or NiMH type batteries. Battery life does not seem to be extensive, as the display constantly draws power. Carrying a spare set is recommended. For NiMH batteries, the camera has a feature to discharge batteries that are running low.

A few miscellaneous comments. When in movie mode, you cannot zoom in or out, and sound is not recorded. A `protect all' feature, that enables you to protect all saved images at one time, could be very useful, as individually protecting images is a slow process. The `new' graphic user interface (GUI), looks a lot like my old Finepix 2600Z, except with larger icons. Using Finepix software to download photos from the camera is painfully slow. A program like Photoshop Elements is much faster. An underwater housing is available for the A610 and new Fuji A800, and may make these cameras more attractive buys.

My main cameras are Canon's 20D, 30D and S2 IS. I got the A610 strictly as a utility carry around. Economically priced, it produces quality images in most situations. Being aware of its limitations, you can decide if it will meet your needs. Fuji's A800 is an 8MP, and has additional features, like a mode selector dial, and picture stabilization. For a few dollars more, it may be a better choice as a primary camera.

I've bought this camera after 2-3 years of using Fuji S5600, about 6 months ago. I was searching for something with improved zoom range, optical image stabilization etc...something more modern.
After getting S100FS, firstly, I was very impressed by style (like SLR and heavier than, e.g. Nikon D60), but was little disappointed: it is still not an SLR and sensor makes a big noise (comparably to Nikon D60 again), manual focus is not the same that I expected. But it was ended after 2-3 weeks of using this camera. Getting accustomed, I observed that quality of pictures became at least twice better than on S5600. At ISO 200 (JPEG) the noise is negligible, at ISO 400 (that I use sometimes for HDR mode) it is little bit higher, however, ISO1600 (in RAW) can give you not too bad results. I almost never use film simulation modes, rarely SP1 and SP2, but "custom" modes C1 and C2 are very helpful in addition to A and M modes that I use quite often. Lenses are almost ideal and work perfectly both in telephoto and macro/supermacro modes.
Overall, everything is quite good, but I should noted to some points that would be improved in next Fuji bridge cameras:
- relatively slow auto-focus (for example, if you trying to make photo of a flying bird, like cormorant; almost always it is impossible. You could use manual focus, but it is a more slow option;
- in comparison to S5600, you cannot make aperture bracketing, for this improved camera it would be more interesting option than various automatic modes;
- Using eye viewfinder is it not too easy sometimes...you have switch to LCD to change some settings in menu;

In conclusion, I can say that this camera is almost excellent choice for Fuji S5600/9600 or other bridge camera lovers, this is almost SLR with good lens of a wide focal range and it costs approx. 1000 euro less than similar SLR.

Complaint was then made to Amazon who sent a replacement which is much better but still not as good as a SLR.

I finally bought the S5 Pro after a long wait for the price to drop, i am the owner of Fuji S2, S3 pro for a long time and still..I have no doubt that S5 will exceed the previous models. Indeed it is a much better camera.
The build is nicely solid, fast respond, heavy and feel great in my hands. I have read many reviews on this S5, people complained about its back focus issue!? I found no problem at all. I can only suggest people to read the manual throughout 1st before using the camera, one must know all the functions of this camera..The AF is more advance than the S2&S3, it got many settings on it.
As far as picture quality , OMG! it is totally awesome. the color is so smooth and so pleasing, the details is so attractive, not to mention very nice noise control at high iso, the sharpness come from your lens, but i love all about Fuji image quality, it is the best i've seen, and i have owned about 20 digital cameras already. To bad Fuji stop making DSLR, otherwise i would buy their next model. But i have faith that Fuji will return 1 day..
Strongly suggest anyone who cares for IQ rather than speed. S5 is a fast enough camera. But you will be happy with the end result.
I sell prints , i dont sell speed. Infact, i dont wear shirt that say Canon or Fuji, i wear shirt that say Jesus save!!!!..

I have only had the camera for a few weeks but have been very impressed with the results to date. The picture quality has been good and the small amount of video I have shot has been excellent. The zoom is a little jerky as stated by other reviewers but I guess that is only to be expected when there is a 15x range. The downside to making it slower and smoother would be the time taken to get from one end of the range to the other. The image stabilisation works very well even at the end of the zoom range and in relatively low light.

The technical details on Amazon stated that the camera has aperture priority mode but if that is the case I have yet to find it. This is a pity as the pre digital SLRs I used in the past always featured aperture priority so this is something I tend to prefer to shutter priority.

The camera is light and the controls are generally easy to use although to start with I did find myself pressing the wrong part of the central 'ring' control which meant nothing happened - a bit frustrating but should be okay from now on. Overall an excellent buy at the price which produces good results. Add aperature proiority and smooth the zoom a little and it would be a 5 star buy for me.

This is my fifth digital camera since 2000 and I think it is amazing. I have owned one other make in that time but pixel for pixel the results where far less impressive than the Fuji. I can't comment on reliability as I have only just taken delivery. First of all it may depend on what you want a camera for but what ever some people say or its technical spec, I can honestly tell you its performance is stunning. Maybe not on paper compared to SLR's, although the spec is impressive, but in the real world it's a winner. By the time you have changed your Len's on a SLR your subject has long gone. I seriously considered going back to SLR as I had used them for years and Pentax was my favourite, but unless you are a professional I think this camera makes the need for one superfluous. I have been told by a local camera shop owner that it actually does out perform many entry level SLR's. It's obviously not a compact but it beats lugging lots of lenses and ancillary equipment on coast paths or over moor land. Also it is competitively priced. I know someone who is still saving up for that £300 lens to go with his SLR and in the past year has missed many wonderful photo opportunities. Landscapes, capturing the mood at all times of year is my thing but also insects so full manual control is essential for me. Manual focus and shutter priority gives me the flexibility I need. To sum up this camera gives you the quality and performance all in one package to deliver satisfaction to all but the most picky of photographers. Well done Fuji, keep pushing the boundaries.

basically, this camera is a digital SLR 'wannabe' as you have around the same functions but without the need for several lenses.
15X zoom on the optical side is probably as much as you need on a digital and with the dual image stabilization the blurring is (almost) a thing of the past.
easy to use?...damn right, point and click on auto and get good results but if you feel a little adventurous there are plenty of settings to mess around with.
for the price and compared to other big zoom digitals (and possibly a lot of dedicated SLR digitals)this camera is well worth the money.
no one can argue at the ease of use and results, some pro camera men have even been well surprised at the quality.
oh, and the electronic viewfinder is probably one of the best out there which can be a huge bonus on bright days (or for those of us that struggle to see in focus)

where there is good, there is bad.
mainly, i have to follow on with the 'jerky' zoom complaint, it really can be a pain.
the USB/HD cover seems likely to break off after some use, care will be needed there as it is a little flimsy.

would still recommend to anyone looking for a good, all round camera that will do a more than capable job and give some extras to mess around with.

I am really pleased with this camera as for the vast majority of photos you would normally take the results are absolutely fantastic and of equal quality as my mates Nikon Digital SLR that set him back over £2000. Ok now for its limitations while it will take photos extremely quick in the contnuos shoot mode it then takes ages to save them which can be annoying and while the auto mode and the shake reduction modes are really good they are not perfect especially in less than perfect light. There are options for you to set the camera up as if it was a DSLR but the manual that comes with it doesn't reaaly give enough detail for you to be able to do this straight from the off and as auto works fine 95% of the time most users like me won't bother to play with mastering the set up. To summerise if like me you like a camera that you point and shoot and that will be able to shoot fast moving objects like cars at a race track and still give you really good quality pictures you aint gonna beat this one for this amount of money. But if like my mate you like to set up your own camera and really push the limits of a camera then no it probably aint for you.

I am very serious in everything that follows:

Over a course of four years, this camera has withstood more abuse than any camera should. I have literally run it over with my car at 40 mph on dirt... more than once. I have dropped it over a hundred times onto hard surfaces. The front faceplate looks like it has 3 bullet dents. The LCD screen has dust and hairs behind it. It is scratched so much you can't see scratches. It has been rained on, dropped in mud, and been literally thrown from a car traveling at 55 mph, sent into brush. It has been stuck with double sided tape to the back of a car doing 55 mph offroad. It was taped to the front of a motorcycle. It was held outside the window of a car doing 100 mph. It was held outside a car doing 70 mph in the rain. It was used in 0 degree flash freezes.

I never thought anything about Fuji... and now I can't imagine buying anything else. I simply cannot stress how great this camera is. It is not a shockproof camera--but it has earned the title!

Don't believe me? See this camera in action, "Chris Offroads his Sebring" on YouTube:

I have had 3 problems in 5 months with this camera.

1. SD card got stuck in the camera. It had to be sent back to Fuji to sort out.
2. The flash has stopped working and does not popup like it is supposed to
3. Random problem - The "zoom in" and "turn off" button seems to occasionally get muddled up and switch functions. When this happens the camera gets hot on the bottom and needs time to cool down before it starts working properly again.

The camera is in with Fuji again for issues #2 and #3 and I have been told that if it had come back to them 3 seperate times (if i had sent it back 3 times instead of 2) then I would have been sent a new camera. I don't see why this should be the case as obviously the 2 issues are not related. If I had known this, I would have sent it back three times instead of two.

The best I can do is to buy the extended 2 year warranty and if it goes wrong once more I can then send it back and get another. Obviously I am not very happy with the faults I have experienced with this camera.

When it is working, it is great. Nice, crisp photos & easy to use. The video comes out well, the anti-shake function provides clear photos when taken from a boat. Unfortunately it has proved incredibly unreliable and I have had to take my old camera away with me as a backup.
