I have been very impressed with this camera. While not a professional level camera, it is a great super-zoom that the "normal" person can utilize to get great pictures. The speed, clarity, and low light ability are exceptional. 11 mega-pixel coupled with a 14 times optical zoom you can get a large enough number of pixels on almost anything to give you the picture you want. I also like that the zoom is manual because you don't have to wait for the motor to get you there, thus you never miss the shot while trying to zoom.

I purchased the S5800 last weekend(6/7/08) Have just received it. I must say it was very well packaged. It arrived when Amazon said it would, outstanding service and the price was unbleiveable. Amazon used the Home Network Delivery Couriers, which was great, you could track the parcel online. Having read some of the other reviews I was abit concerned about the manual being in French. I opened the box and found the manual and all other paperwork was in English, thank god, although the wife can speak and read french. The camera was very easy to setup, and within a couple of minutes I was ready to snap my first victim!. The 8.0 mega pixels raally make a difference from my old Fuji, being only 2.0 mega pixels. You can see a real depth and more sharper image. Its very comfortable to hold, with the capture button and zoom switch being in the same place. Its also nice to able to switch between the view finder and the 2.5" screen. I would not hesitate to recommend this camera or any of the Fuji range. One tip use the XD card the images seem more sharper and more depth of colour.

I ready through a number of reviews (a LOT of them), and could live with the limitations described there (mostly about the lens at extreme zooms). And I did not want to spend $70 for a replacement Li-ion battery in case I needed one, so the Fuji looked like a good option.

First impressions weren't bad : good menu system (though I never really understood why the F-button functions and the Menu were so confusing). The lens did extend longer than expected, but I could live with that.

But when taking the first pictures, I was truly disappointed. The images looked grainy, unsharp, undetailed. Like a camera from several generations ago. I then started experimenting with all the settings, abandoned the AUTO, tried every imaginable manual/high-quality/Low ISO setting, but I felt the results remained poor. I then compared with my little Canon Ixus 55, compared identical pictures... and found the Canon - smaller, lower Pixels,..) came out WAY better, WAY sharper, WAY more natural.
And that was just on low ISO. Going to ISO 200 and above? Forget it, quality was so terrible, you thought you'd be looking at one of those VGA cameras they give away as business gifts.

I tried and tried again to make the pics look good - in bright light, customized settings, everything... but again, disapointment....

Oh, I also noticed that at full lenght zoom, the camera refused to focus on objects 2-3 meter further. And there is an unacceptable amount of purple fringing.

So, after 2 weeks, I sold it, and bought the Panasonic FZ 18. And, though that too isn't perfect, at least that's acceptable, qualitywise!

I bought this as a gift for my mother. She really likes it and it is definitely a great, small, and portable device. However, some of the menu options could be easier to navigate, and from what I have seen from other reviews, it is true that the corners of the pictures are darker; otherwise picture is good. It comes with a rechargable battery, which is a plus. Overall an average product. Great for beginning and intermediate digital camera users.

This camera is ideal for someone who would like a straight-forward camera with a range of basic functions. It is easy to use and produces good results. I would, however, give two recommendations. Firstly, use a memory card. Secondly,buy some rechargeable batteries.

This is the perfect camera if you cannot quite afford the SLR ones. It is compact,easy to use and has a great optical zoom so you don't need to carry extra lens around with you to get a perfect shot.

The way I test the quality of a digital camera is to view its photographs on a computer at 100 percent. (After all, what good is a 8 megapixel camera if one could merely zoom the pictures from a 4 megapixel camera to 200 percent and get the same quality.) I find that my new Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd takes grainy (blurry) pictures. I took a number of pictures, all using a tripod for stabilization, and they all turned out grainy. (I used the Auto function to allow the camera to choose the "best" setting.)

The camera is light, but that is because where most quality camera manufactures use metal (usually an aluminum alloy) in the barrel (zoom lens) of the camera, Fujifilm uses plastic. And the plastic lens has around 125 thousandths movement from side to side when extended.

Fuji used to mean quality. I've owned several over the years, starting with the one I bought while serving in Vietnam. I wonder if Fujifilm is the same company. If so, the company seems to have lessened their standards.

Too bad a person couldn't "try before you buy," like some software manufactures offer.

I am a complete novice at photography. Know nothing!! I needed a camera to take close up pictures of miniatures (1:12 scale) and this fab camera does the job better than I expected!!

I mostly use "Auto" and this does for ALL my needs.

If you are an amateur but need something more than a point and shoot - this is for you.

It is so easy to use. I love it!

I've been wanting a small, economical point/click camera that takes good pictures with the minimum ammount of blur. That's exactly what I got. Camera is easy to use, very intuitive and has an unusually long battery life (I've been able to use it daily for about 4-5 weeks between charges). The pictures are sharp, I've been able to take beautiful action photos without hand or motion blur. For a basic camera without any frills, bells or whistles I deffinately recommend it. It's small and light enough to keep in my purse on a daily basis.

My one qualm is that the software it came with sucks. It won't work properly on my new computer (and I don't have an old PC to test it on) and crashes when I try to upload photos from the camera. My PC does have a memory slot reader so I've been able to get around the problem without difficulty, but if the software and cabling are key for you, you might want to look into an alternative.

The camera works well, pity about the batteries, it would be better if it was rechargeable but battery life is OK.
I would be happpy to recommend it for a real amateur like me.

Easy to use and set up, lightweight and easy to hold versus many others in the same category. I would recommend this camera to someone who is looking for for more than the traditional store camera but who is a novice at serious photography. A perfect starter camera for users looking to learn a bit more about photography.

Yes, a DSLR gives you more flexibility and perfect pictures even in less than ideal conditions. But if you don't want to haul all those interchangeable lenses around all the time, or you just don't need all the bells and whistles, this is a great replacement. Don't get me wrong - this machine has settings gallore you can fiddle with. But you don't have to. I've done semi-pro shooting for some time in the past, but now with a growing family, seldomly find time to do any serious shoting anymore. What I need is a camera with outstanding picture quality and a big lens to carry to family functions, take pictures of the kids and occasionally shoot a bird, or a flower, or a pretty landscape. This camera does the trick. And don't give too much attention to all those rumors about "purple fringing" - the picture quality is outstanding, and if you really must shoot at very low level light conditions, change back to the DSLR.
So, to sum it up - great picture quality, settings gallore, big lens. Great camera.

I have had the S5 pro for a little over a year. I have seen side-by-side results compared with Nikon D200 and D300 and Canon 12.1's and the Olympus flagship. Shooting in RAW the Fuji is just as sharp as any 10 to 12 megapixel camera out there. I don't like the less sharp standard settings. But what makes the Fuji chip special is the color. It's dead on; rich, finely textured, true. The design which mimicks the rods and cones of the eye works. Period. All the SLR's that have come out in the last 1 or 2 years are amazing. But the Fuji S5 still holds its own on color reproduction which probably is expected since Fuji is of course a long time leader in film manufacturing.

I love this camera!
The features and menus are both easy to find and use.
It is small and lightweight but it feels well-built and durable.
I have tried the camera both indoors and outdoors with great results, it has the auto function but if you try using the the settings you may obtain better results.
I uploaded 3 pictures I took featuring my cat, and I must say I was amazed at the detail level obtained by the camera.
If you are on a budget this is definitely a great purchase.

Purchased this camera a few days ago (from 6th Ave, through Amazon - VERY fast shipping!) as a replacement for my DSLR. The DSLR (Canon XTi) makes better pictures for sure, but the convenience, the tiltable LCD, the wide range (28-400) of the lens, the ability to make movies, and the large CCD are good reasons (for me) to drop the DSLR for this one. (why in this digital age do we still need SLR like setups????)
I originally purchased my Canon as a replacement for my Sony F828 (unfortunately, Sony does not make any camera anymore that have the great design of the F828!), and I found myself struggling going backwards in time - missing the convenience of the F828 (tilting the body/lens) badly.
After doing a lot of research I ended up with the S100FS.
I can highly recommend this camera if you're (like me) in need of a good camera, but you just do not want to deal with the limitations of a DSLR.

I love this camera....bought it for my mom for Christmas, takes great pictures, the screen is very clear...great snow pictures, which I couldn't get with my camera.....Not to many buttons on it so it is less confusing, but if you scroll through the menu this camera offers a lot. Would definetly recommend this camera.

I got this for my wife to replace her ailing Nikon Coolpix camera she has had for the last 2 years. Not only is it more powerful but the battery lasts a long time and the picture quality is great! She also mentioned that it's much easier to use and the flash doesn't take as long so your pictures are taken faster.

likes;

face dectection good
hd video great
continuous shooting excellent

dislikes;

jerky zoom makes it hard to get proper compsition when shooting a picture quickly
dont like lens which isnt threaded unlike previous model, so cannot easily add filters etc

I've purchased many cameras in the past few years, from subcompacts to DSLRs. This is a very inexpensive camera and I wouldn't expect SLR-level performance, of course. However, it is still disappointing. In fairness, it is capable of taking perfectly nice pictures in ideal conditions. But it is extremely inconsistent, and has poor low-light (i.e., indoors) performance. Without optical image stabilization, its usefulness is extremely limited. You can do better.

Bought the S1000fd & this case recently as, according to the Fuji website, the case was made for the camera. Amazon has no picture of the case so I wasn't sure what to expect, but it fits very snugly, which I like as you can then put the camera & case into a backpack or another bag.
I currently have 4 batteries & a memory card in the case as well. The case doesn't come with it's own strap because the camera does and once this is fitted to the camera it very neatly slides to the back and the case and the cover fits over the front & sides. Not disappointed at all. Very pleased I bought both.

I got this camera to get shots of my 7 month old. I was concerned about getting non-blurry shots since children move suddenly. I've gotten great pictures of him. We went to a parade and there was no blurring of the moving people or floats. We even went to a Medeivel fair and had only slight blurring of joisting. Not bad for two horses moving quickly in opposite directions. The video function was handy. I was able to capture my son's first steps even though I didn't have my video recorder with me because of this function, it even captured the sound. The battery lasts quite well on a single charge and the camera is fairly intuitive in how it functions, I didn't have to read the manual to figure it out. Small enough that I can alway have it with me. Resolution is great, I'm very satisfied with my purchase, it does what I wanted it to do.

I got this Camera for my birthday and its superb. The improvement in picture quality and facilities since I bought my only previous digital Camera five years ago has to be seen to be believed.

This is smaller than my previous Camera has more facilities, and requires half the number of batteries. The basic settings are:
Auto
Movie
Landscape
Portrait
Digital Zoom
Red Eye Reduction
Picture Stabilization
Baby Mode

To be honest Auto and Movie are the only two I've used. The movie facility (with sound) is unlimited within the limitations of the memory card. The 1GB card provided will give you almost 1/2 an hour of video. The picture quality is very good and its easy to link to your PC. With the benefit of photo software even the most average picture can be cropped to look good.

Another excellent feature of this Camera is the large viewing screen (54mm x 40mm).

A great little Camera that does everything I need.

I take pictures at pow wows and have been waiting for full control camera that had over 10 mp and a super zoom lens. As most of my shots are at ground level the flexible monitor is great. An SLR didn't get it as in seconds I need to switch from subjects 8' then 150' with lots of action. No time to change from 38mm to 400mm this camera can do it. Sure you can get a somewhat higher definition photo with a DSLR costing over twice as much but there is a place for this type camera.

It's a great starter camera. I got it for my son for christmas and he loves it. It is very easy to use and has a big LCD screen. It takes really good pix too with hardly no delay time. I would recommend this camera for anyone especially young adults who love to take pix.

I Recieved this camera today and it was much more than what i expected, i have recently grown more interest in photography and thought it was about the right time to buy a low end D-SLR at first and this is great for just that. for more casual hobbists this camera is great, especially if you just want the camera to do the lot for you on auto, also there are pre-set settings for such things like portrait, landscape, sport etc. also if you want to improve your photography knowledge and want to change different effects on your images then you can either change the mode to manual so that you determine all of the settings, apperture prority so that the camera automatically sets the appertuer and your change the other settings, or shutter prority which is the same bu it changes the shutter qutomatically obviously.

Just upgraded to this camera from the S9500 -
A brilliant camera - 11.1MP with a 400mm zoom and a 67mm lens diameter.
You can adjust so many settings - The colour - tone - sharpness of the outlines - and finetune the white balance. You can even customise your own settings for quick accsess.
The dynamic range is good - it really brings contrasting areas into a good exposure.....Also with a fast SD card you can shoot mulitple images quickly that save to the card very fast......Its fully manual and fully automatic - You can even lock pictures on the sd card and then just delete everything else in one go.
Theres a real lack of noise on the camera - even at 400 asa - and 800's pretty good.
I think i'll be able to print at A3 - and for A4 the quality will be brilliant.
The included software also has a Raw file converter - which has been improved so you can change all the settings before converting it to a Tif or JPG.
So looking forwards to bringing this camera on holiday.
The fixed lens lets you photograph from a 1cm macro to 28mm wide angle up to a 400mm zoom - For what you can do with this camera its definately 5 Star

When I was searching for a replacement digital camera that was stolen....I came across many that sounded nice. I had my choices narrowed down to three cameras one of which was the FujiFilm. I wanted a camera like my old one that was not too small, that would fit my hand and be easy to hold. I wanted a big optical zoom and that narrowed the cameras down to just a few. I liked the looks of the FujiFilm, however, some of the reviews said the SD card was hard to slide in as it went in at an angle. Also, several reviews talked about one of the doors being flimpsy. Anyway, I finally couldn't make up my mind, so I went to local camera shops and finally found the ones I liked in stock. The FujiFilm won out heads down. There is nothing short of amazing about this camera and it is well built. The only thing that I see the others must have been talking about is the rubber cover that fits over the power/usb openings. My other camera that was stolen had a rubber cover and I didn't fine that to be any problem and after several years of use never had a problem. The macro for close-ups is awesome and the 18x zoom is as well. Finally, thru reviews and actually seeing the different cameras at photo shops I decided on the FujiFilm FinePix s8000fd. It really fits my hand perfectly and feels like a camera and not a toy. Not easy to drop as a much smaller one would be. The hand holding and shutter button are in the perfect position. Don't wait another minute..this one is awesome.
