As the next step, and costing not much more than a good compact this camera is fantastic. Not too bulky but solidly built it fires up quickly, the 15x zoom (plus some extra digital zoom if needed) opens up a whole new experience over a compact. The focus system is usually accurate but can get a bit woolly in very low light (some form of manual override would have been the icing on the cake). Movie recording is brilliant and has consigned the camcorder to the loft forever. Some people have said the zoom control is tricky due to buttons? mine has a thumb lever that you just push one way or the other, works fine so don't know what they mean!
There is a firmware update from 1.0 to 1.1 on the Fuji site that is supposed to fix LCD display issues (I wasn't aware of any!), but easy to apply via a memory card, there are instructions on Fuji site. Check your version by holding 'Display/Back' button whilst powering up.
Other good features? flash is surprisingly powerful for its size, but not super quick to recharge, adequate would be fair.
It takes AA batteries which makes sourcing emergency power easy, with an 8gb card on full resolution its got room for 1500+ pictures so you use it a lot, best to sort out the good shots later.
I use Nimh rechargeables and as someone else mentioned the battery warning monitor is rubbish! it comes on massively too soon, even with fresh high powered nimh batteries it comes on after a few flash pictures, just IGNORE it and carry on. The camera doesn't care, recharge when your ready not when the camera says so. You will be fine.
Colour can be slightly flat in some lights so I tend to leave mine on the Fuji chroma setting rather than standard as I prefer its boost.
You can get a tiny IR remote trigger control (compatible not Fuji) if your kit doesn't include one, off well known Auction sites for a few quid works fine at 10 to 24 feet and means Dad can be in the pictures too without faffing with timers.
Can't think of anything else to add just now, but if your looking to make the step up from a compact without carrying a crate of bits and lenses around, want a good auto mode to get you started then you have found the perfect choice. Will it make you a better photographer? well your not supposed to say this but yes! It will encourage new interest in what your doing and with the zoom make you more aware of things like framing of your subject in the shot and so on, leading to more thoughtfully arranged shot. Its speed will give you new access to action shots too.
Highly recommended.

Purchased this for a Fujifilm FinePix Z900EXR which is a great camera but definitely requires power. I prefer to take extra, charged batteries with me when going on a trip than to have to constantly charge a single battery. This is a great value and it shipped promptly.

Purchased this for the FujiFilm Finepix 2950. Holds the camera perfectly, with adjustable padded panel, was able to create compartment to hold car charger/cable. There's enough space in case to hold all accessories and components work well.

The Accessories Bundle Kit for my new Fujifilm camera was the perfect pack needed to complete my photography needs. If I had purchased each of these items separately (which is how the store offered them), my cost would have been 3 times higher. Each piece has worked perfectly, and Butterfly responded quickly & efficiently. They even made a personal phone call later to ensure I was satisfied with their service (which was very much appreciated & rare). I highly recommend this company & product.

I bought this camera charger a while back, and until recently, hadn't needed to use it as the camera battery lasted ages.
When going to put my Fujifilm Finepix F47fd on charge, I came to realise the charger in no way took either the battery nor did the in car charger cable fit into the camera itself.
Completely the wrong item for my camera, even though the description states it charges F47fd cameras.
Wish I had tried it out sooner so I could have refunded the item.
It was a great price for a camera charger but unfortunately, does not do what it says on the tin!

While I've seen some pretty bad reviews concerning mechanical issues, I've had mine for 3 years with heavy use with perfect functionality. It's been dropped, left in a hot broiling car, and even used underwater (in a waterproof camera case). It was bought for $90 as a spare simple to use point-n-shoot that was also easy to transport. Consequently it's actually gotten more use that our big complicated DSLR because of it's ease and portability. No, the pictures aren't as good, but they are darn nice for such a cheap digi-cam and sometimes on vacation you just don't want to deal with a bulky camera. The UI is easy enough, the optical zoom is ok for it's size/price, and the Li-ion battery life is pretty good. While I can't vouch for all the other reviewer's mechanical issues, I can say that I'm very impressed with the value I've gotten from this camera and I'm always one to heavily research/scrutinize any major consumer purchase...

DSLR's and myself got along for almost five years, but the lust for lenses
grew and was hard to control. My camera brand was Nikon with models of D70s,
D50, D40, D80 and D90. I finally changed to Fuji S9000. Then 7 months ago
a Fuj S100fs came into my life and didn't have to change lenses anymore. Nikon
was fine, but this camera suited me even better. It is the only one of this
brand that I can find the battery level on the LCD constantly; plus it has a
fully written manual. This one is best for me. Bravo Fuji!

I found this gem by accident. I was researching the Nikon "superzoom" lens and related DSLR cameras [...]. The review and associated sample photos were compelling, and I purchased the camera from Amazon. I have found the camera user friendly, cost effective, and takes really good photos. [...]. My comments are only from a user perspective.
I started 35mm film photography in junior high - a long, long time ago, and have used several Leicas and several Nikon "F" series film cameras, and for the past few years, compact digital cameras (my favorite being the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX series for its native 16:9 image ratio). I wanted to minimize hauling around six to eight primary lenses and the attendant lens changing as much as possible. This camera serves my purposes for most of the photos that I take, and I suspect those of most people.
The f/2.8-5.6 27-400 mm lens (35mm equivalent) is very good - for a "superzoom" really good, and fits comfortably on the camera body. I had found that the Nikon 18-200 mm (27-300mm 35mm equivalent) f/3.5-5.6 seemed too big for the Nikon 40/40x/60 series cameras, which in turn, seemed too small for my hands. The design of all lens, and especially "superzooms", are compromises, and this one is no exception. The dpreview gave the F100FS a Recommended rating, and apparently it missed the Highly Recommended rating primarily due to noticeable color fringing under test conditions. For the size of photos I take, even up through 8 x 10, to date color fringing has been of no concern. Where I enlarged some images on my Mac and specifically looked for it, it was easily removable in PhotoShop (unfortunately Abobe's PhotoShop Elements does not seem to contain the necessary module). Optical image stabilization works well.
From my photos to date, image resolution has been very good to excellent - certainly through ISO 800 and through ISO 1600 unless one is super critical. I shot at ISO 3200 at a graduation ceremony under very poor lighting conditions, and was far from the stage. The resulting photos were quite acceptable - not great but considerably better than any one else in the group obtained that night. Image color under good lighting is accurate and can be "tweaked" through menu entries, as desired. Using automatic white balance, color under poor lighting is variable. At the graduation noted earlier, some images had very good color and some needed a little work in PhotoShop.
Function buttons on the camera body are similar to those on a DSLR camera, are minimal in number, and reflect functions that are actually useful in taking the photos without having to enter the menus, and the menus themselves are quite well laid out. Three buttons especially are appreciated: the ability to change the ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation by single purpose buttons, and a toggle button to change manually between the view finder and the LCD. The light metering methods can be selected from a dial on the back of the camera. The tiltable LCD is quite usable. Other incorporated "must haves" are listed in the Amazon S100FS product description.
Since I don't use the Fuji software, I cannot comment.
This "cross over" camera should be judged against other "superzooms", both compact and entry level DSLRs with comparable lenses. Given that the Nikon 18-200 mm (27-300mm 35mm equivalent) f/3.5-5.6 alone is about the same cost as the Fuji S100FS camera, the S100FS should be considered by anyone interested in a very good camera with a superzoom lens that is easy to use and takes really good pictures under a wide variety of conditions. Yes, it can be used on "automatic", but the camera has more capabilities than just "automatic". The manual is pretty good, and the more advanced capabilities can be learned "bit by bit", as needed.
Added 19 June 2008. Like a "compact" digital camera, the S100FS LCD is available full time. DSLR cameras with their mirrors are not available "full time" as a framing tool. The tilting LCD make it even more useful to visualize the image from various angles. While I prefer to use the eyepiece to frame most images (using the eyepiece usually provides a sturdier hand hold), the always active LCD is really useful under some conditions.

After using film SLRs for many years then having a long period off from most 'serious' photography, I bought a cheap digital camera (no names, no pack drills) and was very disappointed. Decided to upgrade to something a bit fancier and chose the S2000HD, mainly on the basis of customer reviews. Having used it for 18 months, have been very pleasantly surprised. It's robust and versatile, fits the hand nicely, has easy-to-use menus, produces crisp, well-focused pictures under most conditions, has good battery life and a powerful flash for its size and, of course, that magnificent optical zoom. The HD movie feature is an added bonus which I don't use often but works well.
The only faults I've found with are: the annoying push-on lens cap which I would have replaced with a UV filter if it had a threaded lens barrel and the maximum shutter speed of 4 secs (I enjoy taking astro pics and it's not long enough).
All-in-all, a terrific piece of kit for its price which I'd recommend to anyone.

This was exactly as described and arrived in only a couple of days. Have only used it once but it charged fine and lasted as long as my previous Fuji battery before re-charge required. Great buy as far as I can tell.

This was my first digital camera I loved it got it for $279.00 and would have given it 5 stars if it had not died ,I ordered it feb 18 2008 it came in about two weeks .I have taken about 3000 shots and made two short videos all good till it died last week May 30 2011.I have not found a local place to have it repaired area code 94589 so it may have a second if the repair is not to costly. the zoom feature was great but slow not Quick enough for most wildlife shots.when I replace it if it cant be repaired I will get the most powerful zoom I can afford .

The set comes with a nice bad that allows good room for my Fuji S2950 along with all of the other accessories it comes with. I would recomend this accessory kit for this camera.

Seeing as how I've owned this camera for about 6 years I thought it time to write a review.
The last batch of reviews came from 2007,so this one is long overdue.
First and foremost,I notice a few reviews of people pointing out that after owning the product for a while that sometimes the LCD screen becomes blurry,along with the pictures taken.After owning my camera for about a year I suffered from the same exact problem. However,I found a simple solution.Simply press up on the zoom button to come back into focus! It was that easy,though it took me quiet a way to figure that one out. For some strange reason the A350 quits auto zooming after so much use.
At one point my camera did fizzle out on me and refused to open the lens. I believe the problem stemmed from a particular incident in which I dropped the A350.
Though my warranty covered the damage and it was returned as good as new. Since the incident,from time to time I run into a little mechanical trouble,but not enough to call it a habit. The zoom works good,though a full on zoom of any particular object is almost futile,due to the fact zooming in the A350 to its full capacity causes the batteries to die very fast.In that regard this camera fails but that doesn't cause it to falter completely.
The highlight of this camera is the simple construction along with an easy to use interface,with the ability to take quality pictures. I've managed to snap a few I still can't believe was capable of being taken on this little camera.
If you're reading this review now,most likely you're in the market for an affordable camera that takes good pictures. This camera does this and a little more.
Another feature of the A350 is the ability to record video. The quality isn't amazing but i've found it to deliver decent video considering the fact this device is primemarily a camera. It's a nice extra for the low price.
By todays standards this camera is eclipsed by more modern creations but that doesn't mean it isn't without charm.

Had it for years and I would always take it with me in my bag - Good quality pictures, good battery life and easy to use. Just DO NOT take it to the beach! Unfortunately I no longer have this camera due to some sand getting in it and it breaking. As soon as I can afford another camera I'll be happy to purchase this one again :-) Highly Recommend.

This is one of four Fujifilm cameras I've owned. My complaint about this one: It simply doesn't focus anymore. One out of 10 photos is acceptable. I suppose this is because it's old. Two whole years. That's about par for my experience with products from this company. I've sworn off Fujifilm now and will buy top-notch brands.
Other problems:
* Poor battery life. But this seems to be the case across the entire industry.
* Lens cap that comes with it is cheap and poorly engineered: It pops off easily, and the string is always in the way. If you're going to supply a lens cap with the product, at least make it to minimal standards. This thing is basically like a plastic food container cap - but without the sealing lip.

Good value for the price. Would buy again. Camara bag was a nice size. Card reader worked fine. The rechargeable batteries held charge even recording video. I returned the camera I purchased this for but kept the accessory kit and will continue to use.

I purchased this kit with my HS 20 EXR and evry item is very useful. The card reader and charger work very well and enabled me to update my firmware. The bag would have been perfect for the camera but it is on a small side. I expected a bigger bag. In all I rate the kit four big stars.

In our house we are heavy users of Camera batteries so a battery with 'good staying power' is a necessity for us. Although cheap compared to 'named brands' it performs surprisingly very well indeed. The wife's Fuji F610 tends to 'eat' batteries so this is indeed a good test for it. I am a believer that all rechargeables need 'conditioning' first so upon receipt it had a good charge and then then for the first run I gave the Camera to my son to just run around and 'shoot to waste' (and believe me he sure did - you would not believe just what a 10 year old boy will take pix of and make mini videos of when given a free hand.... I leave this to your imagination) The first run gave us a good couple of hours use. After 2 more successive charges and the running time was increased dramatically even with a lot of flash use.
Amazing value for the price. I will be getting a couple more to put on the shelf for a rainy day.

I can't say enough good things about this camera. I am over the moon happy with it. It's ridiculously easy to use. You can touch up and crop photos, right in the camera! It has great settings, including picture stabilization for taking pictures of fast moving objects like little kids! The photos come out so wonderfully bright. Even the night photos look amazing! I love it so much!!!!

This camera at first seems to be an odd duck, a non-DSLR camera at about the same price (or more) as an entry level SLR. If you're only taking photos of people in normal situations or landscapes with a fairly wide angle lens, that's true. But if you were to consider the cost of a similarly capable wide range zoom lens of less range and the cost of an entry level SLR body, you'd find that the price would run somewhere between double and triple the Fuji S8100, possibly more if you really compared the sharpness of the lens at the longest focal length.
For someone like me who is interested in wildlife photography, specifically birding, but who also likes to shoot general scenery and travel photos, the convenience of the one lens, lower weight and wide range makes this an extremely attractive camera. I would guess that it should also work well for sports photography. I'd probably stick with manual focus for that as the autofocus isn't particularly fast.
I'm updating from a Panasonic/Lumix DMC FZ20S, which has been a fine camera. But the 5 megapixel images and lack of camera RAW, along with the poor low light capability has finally pushed me to look for a more capable camera. I found it. Fuji has a great reputation for performing well at higher ISO speeds. I certainly find that to be true. I've gotten some excellent photos at 800 ISO and quite usable snapshots at 1600. It takes pictures in RAW format without slowing down the way the current Panasonic model does. Its lens isn't quite as sharp but the image processor and programming give a much crisper image. Panasonic uses, IMO, a too aggressive noise reduction processing which makes the shots a bit soft.
The only real problem I see with this camera is a noticeable chromatic aberration (purple fringing) in high detail areas in bright light, like foliage and some barrel distortion at extreme wide angle. There is a slight pincushioning at extreme magnification but it's not bad considering the effective focal length. All these problems can be worked out by some on computer processing of the RAW images so they are more annoyances than real problems.
The image stabilization seems to be comparable to the Panasonic, which is quite good. It's amazing to be able to get usable photos with 400 + mm effective focal length while shooting offhand. Using my monopod helps. Shots with a tripod are terrific.
Most controls are accessible right on the camera and don't require digging into the menu system to change. It has full manual controls, including focusing, which is important when shooting photos of birds in branches. Autofocus usually gets you a photo of some clear twigs and a fuzzy bird. That's true with any camera. So manual focus is essential.
Balance is good and the camera is light enough to carry for hours. Color saturation is great and can be adjusted to presets that kind of mimic Fuji films. It may be a gimmick but I'm happy with the results. Time between shots is pretty good as is start up speed. Movie mode even takes HD/wide screen. HD eats up memory furiously but for short segments works well. Though the on camera mic does pic up any breeze when shooting. You can even zoom during movies. Manual focusing works best for that as there is some time lag that gives a second or two of out of focus movie on auto. The camera mic also pics up some of the zoom motor noise with auto focus.
If you don't need the extreme magnification then you might be better off with an SLR. But if you do need to get shots of distant or small subjects then this camera really shines.
Any camera is a compromise. You can get a more capable setup by using a SLR and a bag full of lenses. But I just don't want to bother with the complication or weight or to pay the cost of quality lenses of this focal length. I'm very happy with this camera. It's a great wildlife photo tool that can also cover a huge range of shooting conditions. It is capable of taking very good pictures and is the kind of camera that gets taken along more often than a larger and heavier SLR, compared to which, it's a great bargain. I'm happy with my choice and look forward to a lot of time with my new Fuji.

There was a gap in my digital camera inventory for a superzoom camera. I now use this camera at the beach taking pictures of my windsurfing mates. OK so you do not get great image stabilisation (as with Canon)but then I only paid £90 for it from Currys (currently much cheaper than Amazon). I use with a tripod on high zoom range in any case. There is an image stabilising programme, but this uses the principle of raising the ISO to a fast speed to compensate for movement - this can make the results grainy or dull unless you are shooting in very bright conditions.
The Fuji is lightly constructed and can feel a little flimsy compared to more expensive cameras but that makes it light to cary around. It uses 4 AA batteries which are cheap and easily available if you run out of juice - I think that if you are out in the field this can be an advantage over the Li-ion cells in many cameras which require a fully charged spare or a readily available AC power source to re-charge. You can of course buy recharchable AAs, or splash out on the Lithium AAs (which I have not used though I hear they last for ages).
Importantly this camera makes me want to handle it and take photos. I find the interface easy to follow, the screen is adequate, and you have the option of the electronic viewfinder in bright sunlight. There is a function button giving you access to creative effects suck as B&W, sepia Vivid colour etc, which encourages creativity. The macro facility is excellent, focussing down to 1cm in wide angle.
There is an issue with purple fringing in areas of high contrast on higher zoom shots (eg edges of buildings against sky)but this is the case with many superzoom compacts. Newer models suffer less, and this camera is now getting on a bit in technology terms.
One advantage that this camera has over most other superzooms is the fact that the zoom lens is housed within a solid lens barrel and project no further than the dimensions of the camera. This means that it does not pop the lens cap off as many cameras do, but most importantly it allows one to use a standard screw in lens filter which attaches easily to the 46mm screw thread on the front of the lens. I keep a UV filter permanantly on to protect the lens from salt spray etc. I also have a polarising filter which is very useful for sunny days. I purchased both of these from Amazon and you can see the reviews. It gives far more creative scope than one might expect for the cost of the camera.
At the time of review the camera costs around £160 on amazon, and for this money I reckon a Canon SX100 IS is a better camera also with 10X zoom but with good image stabilisation and great quality, but you cannot add filters.
If you can find a Fuji 5800 for less than £100 - fairly easy to do - buy one.

This camera, though a bit less known than those other big-brand versions is and was one of the best qualtiy cameras I've used. I have SLR's now, however I like this camera for its sheer ease, convenience and quality of pictures. In fact, I'm suprised how Fuji made a camera this small, basic but with such amazing picture clarity. I would recommend this camera for anyone, not just novices.

The Fuji Finepix J10 is a decent camera. It's not the best nor the worst but I am satisfied enough. It's not worth top dollar but if you can find a used one like I did for [...] bucks and in mint condition, then you got a great deal! I love the tiny size and the quick start up. Video quality is not good but..it's not a camcorder.
I got lucky finding my J10 for the 40 dollar price and getting it looking brand spanking new! I thought for sure I was going to get one that was beat up OR mistreated. I decided that I don't want to buy new point and shoot cameras any more. I get disapointed with point and shoots and wind up spending top dollar for brand new and for nothing. Waste of money buying new unless it's a DSLR!
Picture quality is average or decent and I am satisfied with that. The functions are easy and it's so nice and small anyone would love it. It's a clean looking camera..nice and simple and fun.
Find one at a refurbished price or a good used one and you will be happier with yourself! I think most folks will like this one. I have enjoyed it so far and I've only had it for two days.
REMEMBER...DO NOT BUY POINT AND SHOOT CAMERAS BRAND NEW! FIND BETTER DEALS WITH REFURBISHED OR GOOD USED ONES!

I have had this camera for a year and a bit now and have got to know it quite well; the way I see it, it is a camera that is trying to be a DSLR (ie. big expensive camera) but hasn't quite managed - but then, that is reflected in the price.
It does well in general, providing good pictures fairly easily. It has a fairly effective autofucus and a good zoom. The grip is also very nice, but needs small hands otherwise you'll find your fingers with nowhere to go. The buttons are well laid out and easy to use with the exception of the continuous shooting button, that is awkward to hit get with either your finger or thumb. The menus are also well logical and simple to use.
In use the non PASM modes are good IMO, and seem to get good shots. PASM modes- if your interested in these you'll know what I mean by PASM - are a nice feature, but dont really cut it; the camera starts running out of buttons you can press at this point. This means that it is slow to set up a shot, which is very annoying for those moments when you the shot is constantly changing. Especially manual focusing suffers from this with it taking a very long time to get what you want.
The instruction manual is very good, not only telling you how to use options, but telling you how to use them effectively as well. The two and an half inch screen is also nice enough, but the EVF (electronic view finder)is far nicer to use.
As mentioned in a earlier review the camera eats batteries quickly when connected to the computer, so take that reviews advice and get an SD card reader.
Overall, a good value camera trying to punch above its weight.

I've owned this camera for 3+ years now and am starting to look for a replacement. Although a decent Point&Shoot camera, I noticed a definite difference in picture quality when I compared my photos (prints and 'on-screen') to my sister's Point&Shoot Canon PowerShot, which is actually a year older than my z5. I've tried 'tooling' around with the different settings/options, but nothing changes. My images are definitely granier and 'softer'...not as crisp and clear as I would like. It is easy to use, but I am ready for an upgrade. Canon, here I come!

Just as advertised. I was impressed with the items. I could not buy even the battery/charger local for half the price. I would recommend it highly. Great buy, Just as I would expect from a Amazon purchase.

I am only checking the reviews because I have had my camera for exactly two years and just like the review below, the camera will not stay powered even with brand new batteries. I dumped a bunch of good batteries thinking it was the battery and now just figuring out it is the camera! I am disappointed to say the least - I need my camera for a wedding this weekend. Argh. Don't buy this one! (While researching, I also read that this model is discontinued... I wonder why?)

I love my camera and I love that it takes movies too...I just wish it had a stronger zoom or at least some available adapters for a stronger zoom for my bird photos! But other than that, I have enjoyed it tremendously and get great photos out of it.

I've had this camera for over 5yrs.. it was a gift given to me ... yes its high in price but it was worth every dollar spent.. I love this camera so much I didnt care to even lend it out to my daughter on her special functions... this camera takes very good quality picture...easy to adjust with once u get use to it'''.Plays games which most cameras dont carry that feature....

This is by FAR the best camera I've owned. I'm a college student, and portability is important to me. This camera is very thin and light. The autofocus and camera modes are much, much better than my current Nikon (I dropped my Finepix and broke it...had to have a camera fast and they only had Nikon). The camera was very reliable for me for a few years, was easy to take pictures with and light in my pocket. If you're looking for an inexpensive camera that's reliable and takes good pictures, this is it.

Don't get me wrong. I love this camera. As a student I made the decision that I couldn't afford an expensive habit like owning a D-SLR so I stick by my decision to buy this camera.
For many things it's great. The optical zoom is something that you would have to pay through the nose for in lenses in an SLR. It's versatile and has lots of the features and customisability of an SLR. Infact it behaves just like one.
Good points:
1.You can shoot in RAW (although this is buried in the menu),
2.Allows for shot bracketing for HDR,
3.Varying levels of control offered for aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, white balance to suit any possible level of interest and to be useful in most situations - As good as an SLR on this.
4.Live display on LCD which is clear and large
5.Anti shake technology useful for High Zoom
6.Hot shoe for external flash
7.The macro and super macro setting are pretty good.
8.It's pretty cheap.
9.The Tilting screen is super useful! For taking shots in crowds/on the floor it is essential.
and all the obvious ones they tell you on the website. If you were to upgrade an SLR from the kit lenses it comes with in order to do the same you would find your wallet considerably lighter. All in all a great camera. So why not buy?
Bad points:
1.The manual focus sucks! The focus once button redeems this slightly but this is a pain.
2.I don't like the digital viewfinder being digital I'd rather an optical one but that's just me. It is useful in very sunny conditions.
3.The sensor is significantly smaller than an entry level SLR and you do notice it although it is better than any other non SLR camera I've tried.
4.The smallest aperture I can get to on min Zoom is F8.... This is really annoying and frankly rubbish compared to F22 of the entry level SLR. This means that without buying neutral density filters It is impossible to take long exposure pictures in all but the worst of light. This camera is not good for long exposures or photos where a large Depth of Field is required for this reason.
However, I'm very glad I own one. The Pros definitely outweigh the cons. These are really the only 4 cons I have. I could have listed Pros all day I just stuck to the ones that aren't mentioned much.

I purchased this for my fuji camera and dont regret it. The case has a hard shell which really protect the camera.
