Plain and simple, this is a great headset. After doing some research, Amazon had the best price around so I purchased it. I have not been disappointed. The cord length is plenty for my use. I have a USB input on the front of my PC, but if one doesn't, the cord length should be long enough to use the rear inputs as well. The mic sound quality is excellent, and the headset itself is comfortable while in use. The mic can be rotated upwards to "hide" while not in use. This feature is nice since the mic is not needed at all times. After a number of hours of wear, ears will experience some discomfort, but that is true for any headset. Plug and play, and everything else is ready to go. Great purchase.

These headphones provide fantastic sound quality. They are also very lightweight, which means they are comfortable to wear.The microphone is very crisp and clear. I've had no problems at all with it. When I use it in VOIP programs like Ventrilo and Teamspeak, I've been told that I'm one of the very few people that sounds clear.My only complaints are that it has its built in sound card which is great if you don't have a decent sound card. I DO have a good soundcard, but can't utilize it! Also the foamy earpieces feel kind of cheap. Finally, there isn't as much isolation as I would like there to have been. You can still hear background noises pretty clearly. It's not a huge problem, but it is an annoyance.

I have had this headset for about a month and I am very satisfied. I use it with my laptop to listen to music and watch DVD's, and when paired with the included Persono Software the sound quality is great. I also use it at work, where no software can be installed, and the default settings provided by the default windows driver are good too. As a tip, if it is going to be used without Persono, make sure to select AGC and customize the bass and treble from the Control Panel's Sound Settings. It works perfectly with Skype also; even a slight wisper can be heard by the other party.

After reading all revies here, I thought the pros outweighed the cons... My, how misled I was.Somebody should have warned me about the very unnatural sound, the annoying shrill quality of the high range, and the poor, terribly AWFUL, almost inexistent channel separation on this headset.I bought them as a replacement for my modest Logitech USB 200, not because they did not do their service, but because I accidentally broke them. But how much better they sounded, specially in the channel separation department.Now I am trying the Sennheiser PC135 (my first option, although a little bit more expensive) and, if I find them wanting, I think I am going back to the supposedly inferior Logitech 250 or 350.

3.21.04: First off, I will say that I am an on-line gamer and prefer the best when it comes to my electronics. I purchased the Plantronics 500 headset in March of 2003 and I'm now looking for a replacement. About a month ago, the audio from the left ear of the unit started to go in and out. I decided to dismantle the unit tonight after the left side finally quit on me and I found two places where the very thin wiring has almost completely frayed apart in the actual housing of the unit and where it connects into the headset itself. The sound and microphone on these is VERY good but I am disappointed that just after a year of pampering that they have given out (sorry, only a one year warranty on non-commercial items from Plantronics - which these are).I also had a few small complaints about the inability to switch back to my computer speakers easily, or that the cord can really get in the way at times due to its long length. This may be good for some applications but the cord will stretch for a good 5 feet, alot more than I needed. They are very comfortable though and even after all night gaming, they still felt decent, unless I had my glasses on and then they can really start to hurt after an hour or two. In conclusion, if they would have lasted me at least another year, I would have rated them 4 or maybe even 5 stars but after only one year of use, I have them falling to 3 stars.10.25.04: Well, I am back to buy another DSP-500 headset. I went through two different sets since I last purchased these and they do not compare to the sound quality of the DSP-500. I would have to give these an excellent rating when it comes to the sound/microphone/ease of use/etc... they just need to work on how long they last but I have been told by friends that I use them ALOT so an average user will easily get more time out of them than I did. A year for me was pretty good from what my friends say... so I am revising my review to give them "5 stars". This is an excellent headset and easily outperforms others in the $50 range.11.21.05: Well, it's been over a year now and my second set is doing GREAT! I think I've learned to be a little more careful with my headsets now (or maybe playing BF2 has me more relaxed - hehe). I even have a couple of friends using this headset and they love it too. I tried another "new" set that came out at BB a couple of months back and found them nowhere near the quality of these. I still recommend these, especially since they are still selling for less than 50 bucks. Amazing... the best product I have ever purchased off Amazon.

Don't want to spend a lot of money on a soundcard, and then getting a high quality analog headset? Get this headset then.This headset has excellent. bass and quality.The people who didn't like this headset probably ignored the Persono Software. Get it. Without it, you aren't using the headset fully. The presets for the equilizer are great. The only ones worth using though is Rock, and Games. Both introduce a completely different way of listening through the headset. At first, I was also unimpressed by the sound, but once I set it to "Rock" for the preset and listened to some music. Jesus. I'm almost deaf. In a good way. And use the "Games" preset for everything else.

Warning... software does not come with headphones, and must be downloaded and installed before you plug them in. Default windows drivers will not work and can not be removed once installed.Despite the install issue this is by far the best headset I have ever used... but its also the best pair of headphones I've ever used. Incredible comfort, crisp clean sound, great bass... I'm a synic at heart and still cant find ONE SINGLE COMPLAINT about the quality.Best thing is, since they show up in windows as a seperate sound card you can set you speakers as default and simply tell AIM,MSN,SKYPE or whatever you use to use the headset as default. Your speakers will run everything else... no need to ever unplug the headset... I cant stress enough how great these things are

I previously had a DSP500 and it didn't work out quite well due to certain usb issues. That old headset broke a while back and I searched for a "better" headset. I tried the local Fry's electronic store, but they didn't have the DSP-500 so I bought other noise canceling stuff that let me down. One of the things that had me buy the DSP-500 again was the fact that it didn't have a cord that felt like it was 2 inches long. I can actually stand up without pulling the cord and messing up my headset or usb ports. I also noticed that they have improved the headset quite well and hasn't given me any technical issues yet. I happen to have a PC that has the sound built into it. This headset was an improvement and gave me better sound than I had hoped for. Not only was it good for games, but voice chat too. I bought this headset for a crazy high price through the extra terrestrial ware computer store website and was dissapointed in the shipping methods. I was very glad with the shipping through Amazon and it was also at an incredibly low price. It's not the greatest head set in the world, but it's pretty good for the price and if you have no/bad soundcard. I saved over $103.05 ($46.94 for it) and if I had the Amazon Visa it could have been at about $14! A great deal for this headset and it's worth it.

I ordered the item on Feb 21. Ad says this particular item "usually ships in 24 hours". At checkout it estimates the ship date to be more than two months later (April 27)! If you can update the checkout screen, why can't you update the ad screen as well? Because it was such a hassle to get to the checkout page, I kept the order. No way to reach anyone to explain why it will take so long, or if it really will. I was mis-informed. If it really takes that long, I'll cancel my new card and shop elsewhere. If you told me on the first page, I wouldn't have a problem.

I bought these for online gaming and I coulnd't be happier. The sound is crisp and clear. The bass tones are rich and full. And my teammates can hear me perfectly. I find them comfortable to wear for long stretches, which is a plus for those 3am game sessions, thanks to the cloth padded ear cups. The rubber band over your head holds them snuggly in place, without squeezing or pinching, or catching hair. Although there is no included software (you must download that from the Plantronics website), they are easy to set up and configure to your own audio taste. Switching between the headset and your speakers is done with the click of a button. The only issue I have is that since they are USB, if I don't remember to plug them in before I start my game, I need to quit my game, plug them in, and then restart my game. My bad, no fault of the headset! I've only had them for a couple of weeks, so I can't comment on the durability, although I have used Plantronics headsets in the past and found them reliable.

I tried both and I lean towards the Logitech 250. Here's why:1. Logitech 250 comes with comfy leather-like covered foamy ear cups. For my taste it's more comfortable for all-day wear and isolates you from outside noise better than Plantronics'.2. Logitech 250 is cheaper than Plantronics. This is probably because of the huge honking 'DSP' box on the USB line on the Plantronics model. My computers have satisfactory sound capabilities, so I didn't need the 'DSP'.3. Logiech 250 is less bulky.

I have been fairly happy with this headset. It works well in Skype 2.0. The audio is acceptible and the mic works well enough. The built in sound card with DSP is a nice feature. Drivers loaded automatically in Windows XP.Setting up Skype to use headset as the audio in/out devices works well, except that the in-line volume control continues to adjust the Windows default audio out device levels instead of the headset. Mute works properly, but this is a frustrating design flaw. An audio control on a headset cable should only ever control the headset audio!!! Otherwise I am mostly satisfied.

When you plug these babies in the speakers get disabled, and cannot be enabled again without unpluggin the headset...Other than the inherent bulkyness, this is by far the best headset i've usedWhether it be 32 Bit or 24 Bit sound, the quality is amazing and the microphone works superblyI've used it on a variety of programs (Teamspeak, Ventrilo and Skype) and they all work beautifully...truly a plug and play deviceThe PerSono software takes less than 10 minutes to install and configure and if you follow the directions and read the help manual then you will have no troubles installing this product.(I have the 32-bit version btw)

These are really neat headphones. They plug in via USB--doing the digital-to-analog conversion away from your CPU is supposed to reduce noise. You can hear subtleties in the mouth and voice of the vocalist, for instance, at least on a modern recording.I can't give them a 5 though because the software didn't (and still won't) install completely. That failure doesn't affect sound quality but it does disable the volume control on the USB cable, and maybe some other features. Plantronics has some kind of workaround but I wasn't able to get it to work in a reasonable amount of time.

Just got these headsets a couple days ago and WOW. I have been using them on Teamspeak and they are fantastic. As soon as I plug them in they are activated, and as soon as I unplug them my computer speakers kick in. People on Teamspeak say they can hear me perfectly. These headphones are extremly comfertable even after a couple hours of using them. The cord is a bit long but I can live with it. The Persono software works really well, it allows you to change the mic volume etc. Although the little DSP is a bit larger then I thought but I highly recommend this headset.

I bought this for my son. He is very rough on headphones and has broken a couple of pairs. He loves these! They are a bit heavy, but the sound dampening qualities are very good. He finds them very comfortable and they enhance his online gaming tremendously. Amazon had an amazing price for these. I have seen them on other sites for $120.00.

I am very impressed by the sound quality of this device when used with skype. The build quality is also high.Unfortunately it is not large enough and does not fit my head well. If you are concerned that you have low set ears, or a particularly large brain then you should try this device before you buy.

The DSP 500 from Plantronics worked great right from the start. I enjoy the clarity and response from lows to highs, great bass sound, clear mid and highs. I use the headset for multiplayer gaming, and it allows me to pinpoint enemies with precise-sounding location. Mic works great with Skype and Teamspeak, no adjustment required at all for me. Recommend this headset for avid gamers!

Prior to receiving this headset and mic I could not achieve consistent quality while recording. Being a home user I look for the best quality at the most reasonable price.

Although I give this product four stars, there are some things about it that potential buyers should be aware of.1) Maximum volume may not be enough for everyone. This headset doesn't work off your computers' sound card - it has its own. I had to keep all of my PC's sound settings at 'maximum' at all times. Usually, the headphone volume would be at the maximum settintg, too. Sometimes, this was still not loud enough. This may not be an issue on another person's computer. 2) You may be frustrated getting the right software for your version of Windows. I bought this product "before XP", back when PCs were being shipped with WinME. Getting the XP drivers took a while. Getting Plantronics to communicate about the matter was impossible. 3) Plantronics support is not always helpful. They tend to reply with a standard line without even reading your request. Thus, a response from support may not have anything to do with your question/problem. 4) The ear cushions eventually came off. The adhesive seems to 'melt' over time. I found the cusions literally sliding off the headset. At first they move slowly, so you may not notice it. But once they give way, you'll be searching for the appropriate glue. I've reattached mine several times, but the cushions have become pretty beaten up from the neadless re-attachment activity. This is really annoying. 5) Because it is a digital device, with its own audio card, it uses a USB port. I found this to be very convenient, as I could simply unplug it from my USB hub in order to use my speakers. This avoids the need to reach around the PC to connect/disconnect at the audio card. Very handy if your CPU box is neatly tucked away and out of reach. It is a PnP device, so connecting should be quick & easy, although the PnP performance is not always consistent. I've had my DSP-500 for three years now. Just this week, the left channel went out. I noticed some crackling when I touched the in-line volume control, but now it's completely dead. Of course, there is no warranty at this point. I'm faced with buying another DSP-500 (Amazon has the best price) or trading down to something less expensive, until something better comes along. All of this being said, I've been relatively happy with the DSP-500, albeit for only three years. I would recommend it, especially for anyone a need for decent sound and an integrated mic. If you don't need a high-end product, Plantronics has some additional DSP models that cost less, are lighter and may satisfy your personal sound needs adequately.

Had this one for over a year for online gaming, dictating to a word document, listening to music etc.. Overall I'm satisfied, althought for the money I think they could have done a much better job in every aspect. I only payed $65 online while it was $90 at the store. Had best reviews at the time, and indeed, it sounds almost as good as my $200 sony studio phones (when I play my stereo). drivers are stable and it sounds very good.Digital Remote volume control is VERY handy! you'll love it.BAD THINGS:1. since it's basically a USB sound card, I have to keep flipping between DSP500 for games and my Audigy2 if I want to listen to music in the house .. maybe it's WinXP fault, I was able to use 2 sound cards at wonce under Win2000Pro. This gotten very annoying. Platronics tech support said that's the way it is!2. Although construction is very solid, and the ear muffs are comphy, it's an UGLY LOOKING headset and is not snugg on my head. If I shake my head fast it'll fly off !I wish they'd make the ear pieces much bigger for more noise canceling, hugging the whole ear and used 50mm magnets for greater base reproduction. Why is it always one or the other? Why can't americans learn to make practial things that also look good? :)(...) I realized nobody sees me playing games at night so if I hang it under the desk it doesn't bother me much. If you don't care about the looks, THIS IS THE BEST HEADSET YOU CAN BUY FOR GAMING

Purchased this headset for Internet video conferencing and telephony (VOIP) purposes. The sound quality is exquisite -- both through microphone and headset. Crystal clear and no humming or any other intrusive or distracting sounds.While I personally find all headsets to be more or less uncomfortable, this one I can deal with quite well.You will not have any regrets.

I have had the headset for a couple of week now. Besides using the headset on my work laptop with my new VOIP phone, I have been using it on my home PC while I online gaming.The headset has worked great. I have had no issues. When I ask the folks I talk to on my VOIP service how I sound they say great. They never realized it was a VOIP call.If there was one was one thing I would wish for would be to have the headset a little less bulky. I wish Plantronic would offer a single ear headset as the higher end.

My daughter just moved for the year to Lima, Peru. I am very pleased because tonight we spoke with her for the first time using Skype. I was prepared for mediocre, but free transmission and receiving. It was wonderful! Amazing! It was better than phone quality. I couldn't believe it!It sounded as though my daughter was in a sound studio in the next room. I am really stunned with the technology, and very pleased.

Tried to get it to work, even talked with Plantronics tech support which tried to help. Couldn't get the microphone loud enough. The volume control for the microphone was greyed out and the one in the software kept going down to medium, even though I would try and turn it up.

I was talking on ventrillo one day and all of a sudden the microphone just stopped working. I always take care of my equipment. I don't throw it down and I keep it away from heat. or magnetics. I can't explain it. When it worked, it was great. I paid way too much for just 4 months of usage. I can not recommend this product.

The headset is light weight and very comfortable. My friend suggested it because he is BIG time Gamer. I took the advice and I glad I did. This set won't disapoint.

For those of you using or planning to use voice dictation programs this is your microphone. As a user of Dragon for over 10 years I've researched and examined numerous microphones. None compare with the performance of the DSP500. The recognition/performance of Dragon drastically increases. When using Plantronics I typically have several errors per paragraph; usually do to mispronounciation or accent. With competitors, I can encounter several errors per sentence.Dragon has a program where it adjusts the volume of mic and tests noise to speech ration. According to ScanSoft anything between 20-24 is good. The DSP 500 comes in at a 27.Any users of voice dictation software or those planning to use microphones for voice commands in games must try the DSP 500!(The DSP 400 was rather good as well. I used this microphone for quite a long time. The portability was rather nice. Unfortunately the headset was a bit big for my head. :-)

I had this headset working for only 1 day before the mic on it broke and wouldn't input any audio. This is the second Plantronics headset that I've had that has broken quickly. I am not at all happy with this.I bought instead the Logitech USB 300 model and although it seems to have worse reviews, I'm quite happy with it. The audio quality seems comparable and more importantly, it's still working. The Plantronics seems to me more fragile and prone to breaking.

I bought the DSP-500 at a Fry's a few weeks back because it was the only nice headset they carried. And that it is--it's a NICE headset. It is engineered like the $130 it originally was--very comfortable, very solid feeling.The DSP-500 is a stereo VoIP/game/dictation/whatever headset. It has two large 40mm speakers that sound quite good. The headset itself is extremely comfortable and uses a pretty standard two-part headband--there is a plastic connection that keeps the two halves together and contains the audio wire, and a rubber bit that supports a lot of the weight of the headset, and keeps your hair from getting in the various sliding joints. The rubber is a bit sticky--maybe that washes out, certainly never tried. The microphone unit is standard stuff, don't know its specs.The major selling point of the DSP series is, to me, it's most questionable and pointless-- the Digital Signal Processor, that box you see on the cable. Basically, it's a USB sound card with built-in sound. Or to less generous consumers, it's an excuse to charge $50 or $70 more. The DSP, I suppose, is nice if you don't have a sound card, or have a bad sound card--not most people, certainly not somebody who would spend this kind of cash on a headset. The DSP is not particularly good, either--there is a LOT of "buzz" in the headset as soon as Windows turns the thing on, that's seperate from any volume. It is quite loud. The sound quality is not great. The microphone acts quite strangely indeed--it has "noise cancellation" which does seem to do SOMETHING, but not anything effective like a good cartoid microphone, and when you're not actively making noise, it records a gawdawful buzzing and clicking. Another reviewer has mentioned some sort of update from Plantronics, which perhaps might fix that problem. Either way, the cheap little DSP is not anywhere near as good as the emu10k1 in the Sound Blaster Live! I have (which is, incidentally, a very nice mid-end DSP). The other issue is, this is a _computer_ mike... only. The only connector is the USB connection. That's an awfully expensive headset for a single use. The one other issue with the USB sound is the way Windows handles it--it treats it as a different audio device, so you must select in the "control panel/Multimedia" dialog which device you want for playback, and for recording; you cannot play to both at once. Also, some software has minor technical issues with things not being "normal."The Plantronics software _appears_ totally useless... it has a few equalizer presets that could possibly be of use... to somebody else. The microphone equalizer is sort of pointless, and the playback equalizer definitely so. Other than that, it has buttons "play movie, listen to MP3" that you can map to different programs. Yawn.So, why am I writing this middling review and giving it 4 stars? Well, on the second bit, because it _is_ a damn good headset. However, I wish to compare it to my NEW headset, the Plantronics HS1. The HS1 is probably not available on Amazon--you can buy it from Plantronics' distributor (...). The HS1 is the DSP-500's older, cheaper twin: Plantronics sells it for (...)and I've not found it available anywhere else. The major difference is the lack of the DSP, but it's not an identical product: the headset itself is minorly different in a negative way: it's a little bit harder, is purple and blue instead of black and grey (basically, the DSP-500 looks way more "professional" or if you will, "l33t"), the microphone boom an microphone are formed a bit differently (don't know if there's any functional difference, it's the same rotation-extension system), and the little inline volume control is not a nice--it's analog, not digital, so it's bigger, it's got a big wheel and an actual switch to turn off the microphone. The main difference for me is the end of the thing--two normal 1/8" stereo jacks. So for the "price" of -$20, a _slightly_ less comfortable and sechsay headset, having to use a normal soundcard, and (probably) getting to deal with Plantronics' distributor (not that that's bad--it came a couple days after I ordered it, normal shipping time). I'd advise you to choose the HS1.Other than that, however, the DSP-500 is your buy if you want this type of device. If Plantronics has something to fix the problematic signal processor, this could well be the almost-perfect USB headset: comfortable, light, good-looking, and did I mention, it sounds _great_ with those big 40mm babies. It'd be nice if Plantronics would update the HS1 to include the various nice parts of the DSP-500.
