I do not recommend this camera at all.
You can see some of my pictures in the customers pictures. I have save several hundreds or thousands of dollars buying macro lens for my cameras. I can take this camera anywhere I go, the pictures quality is very good if you use only the optical zoom and get pass the tunnel vision of the OPTEKA lens adaptor.
Thus, I may declare that the Kodak M1033 is wonderfully step free. Powering up the camera is a one button affair, no jog wheels to confuse. One button brings up the camera modes and the same one button confirms the selection. Plus, if you do bring up the menu, the camera helpfully hides all of the options that are not used by the active mode. When my father first opened the box on Christmas day, it was completey intuitive for him I use. I'm making a note here, huge success. (Of course, I did cheat a little by opeining the box the day before and changing all of the initial settings.)
The camera does still hold some surprises for power users as well however. Manual picture taking has some fine options and features to be found, including a large ISO range for a camera of this range, useful color options, and for once a surprisingly accurate auto-white balancer.
I do however knock the camera down one star for a few complaints I had as a power user. If you are shopping for yourself and consider yourself to be a casual user, then just consider this a five star review and move on.
The digital zoomis completely horiffic and will destroy a d picture it is used in, even at low levels. The menu has an option to permanantly turn the digital zoom off. Use it. Although the camera claims to shoot HD video, video in any resolution looks completely unwatchable. And finally there is no option to disable JPEG compression, or change the compression ammount, and as a result, there is a fair bit more artifacts and muddiness as the pixel level than I would care for.
Kodak wants half the value, plus shipping to "repair".
I think not.
There was absolutely no abuse, dropping ect .... disappointing value.
The only thing I didn't like was the lack of a battery charger. You have to leave the battery in the camera to charge it. Not a big deal but just a little inconvenient.
Overall I think it's a good buy for the price.
I have taken probably 50 pictures in the few days I have had it and they all look fine! Much better than I expected actually. The
one issue with alot of point and shoot cameras is their ability to focus on images that are close up, with this camera that was not
a problem. I have been using the camera in its native "smart capture" mode and have been simply let the camera do all the work and I'm delighted by the results.
Its very quick to start up from power on to first shot and with the auto flash type setting each image is appropriately filled if a flash is needed.
I feel like I got more than I bargained for and I'm quite happy about it..nice job Kodak!
WHATEVER YOU DO, do NOT buy this camera-
I bought it at a low price thinking it was a great deal after reading "rave" reviews. It started acting funny a month in. It started going through batteries very rapidly. It would randomly erase pictures I'd taken, or it would claim there were formatting errors, and the picture would never come out. It would not even focus correctly. I lost so many good shots that way. I tried formatting the sd card and the camera, it still didn't work. I even tried ordering new rechargeable batteries. The batteries they sent me did not even work.
Bottom line was it was a nightmare. I stressed over it for a year. I will never buy a Kodak again. I'm going back to Nikon. This is one customer they have lost for life.
To my surprise, there is NO charge capability. So you can transfer images, but not charge the battery.
I could already easily transfer the images from the SD card to my computer, so having this cable does me no good without being able to recharge the battery.
While there is nothing inherently wrong with this particular cable, my suggestion would be to find a cable that SPECIFICALLY states it will support USB charging, as well as data transfer, killing two birds with one stone.
I bought this camera because of the advertised HD video recording capability. I wanted a small device to carry with me to "capture those special moments (c; Maybe even velcro it to the inside of my motorcycle helmet for some "stock footage" (-:
The video records just fine, and plays back on the camera's screen without a hitch. Copy the video (Quick Time MP4) to a relatively fast PC (with QT 7.4 Pro installed) and the video stalls, stutters, and rarely synchs with the audio. Heck, I could have taken still photos with my Rebel XT, taped the audio with my ZEN MP3 player, used Microsoft Movie maker, and ended up with a better result!
I traded a half dozen emails with Kodak's technical team. They seem very talented at providing a canned-response: "Please try our automated troubleshooting web site for this product". Sorry, that web site has a long way to go before it's ready for prime-time. Besides, it doesn't include the option of troubleshooting video recording or playback. Oops. I guess the web development team forgot about that part )-:
Piecing together other customer's reviews both at Amazon and other sites, it seems that the HD video recorded with this camera can only be played back on either 1) the camera itself or 2) using a Kodak HDTV docking station. This either gives me the joy of watching HD video on a 3 inch screen, or paying an extra $80-$100 to watch it on my plasma screen.
Or, I can use QuickTime Pro (or other video-rendering software) to re-encode the video so that it plays back with a software codec. It only takes about an hour to re-encode five minutes of video. The file size more than quadruples, but at least I can watch it without grimacing.
Reading the feedback of other Kodak customers, this seems to be indicative of Kodak development and marketing ploy: use a relatively inexpensive camera to bait the customer, then hook them into buying either extra services and/or accessories just to meet basic expectations.
Please be smarter than I was. Buy a decent camera for photos and a separate small format camcorder for home-movies. Don't try to buy something that does both (at least until the bugs are worked out).
In short, we love it!!! It is small enough to fit in any pocket which means we can carry it with us whenever and wherever we choose. For our purposes, it takes great pictures. And it has great features for such a small and inexpensive camera. I'm sure professionals would (and do) find fault with the picture quality. However, years from now when I'm looking through pictures I was able to get because I happened to have my Kodak M1033 with me at just the right place and time, I doubt I'll care much if the picture quality wasn't technically on point due to the saturation of grey around the edges when the picture is cropped and magnified 100 X's. I'll just be glad I got the pic! Kudos to Kodak for making such a user friendly, solid, simple, and small camera!
Would recommend.
The pictures are beautiful and in focus. When you press the button halfway, it takes a short time to acquire focus and then the little bracket in the screen turns green and the camera chimes to let you know it is focussed. Works great. I have used it mostly outside and inside with flash. Photos with flash are a little darker but look very good. You can adjust brightness if you switch to the programmed mode, but you have to do it every time that you turn the camera on.
It is small but not too small so you can get a good grip on it. I shot a couple of HD videos outside (of my cats) that look good. They are in 720p and I can play them on my iMac computer with no problem using Quicktime player. Colors are great and video is sharp. Only problem is camera takes a second to refocus when you zoom it, but you can zoom during a video. Tripod works best to keep picture from shaking.
All in all, I'm very satisfied with this camera's performance at a very reasonable price.
Pros:
1.after pushing the shutter it only takes 1 or 2 seconds to take the pictures
2.if you are deleting a picture but then if the delete menu is still up and you decide you want the picture back just push undo delete and youll get the picture back
3. you can enhance the picture or crop it ON THE CAMERA
4.3x zoom
5.your color mode can be sepia, low color, natrual color or black and white.
6. when charging the battery you dont even have to take the battery out of the camera
7. HUGE lcd screen
8. its a kodak, enough said
cons
you have only have the lcd screen so its hard to see your pictures in sunlight, otherwise NO CONS!!
if i had to choose between my moms expensive camera and my cheap camera i would choose mine
THIS IS A GREAT CAMERA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I received it so fast too and I live on an island!
Good: Ease of use, picture quality, video quality.
Bad: Battery life, occasional freezing (?!)
This camera really is easy to use, but it doesn't sacrifice features or power to do it (sure, it's no SLR). It's a great pocket camera.
I'm pleased with the picture quality. The automatic mode displays the icon of the most appropriate "specialty mode" as it takes the picture, perhaps educating you for future shots. Colors look good. Flash is good for a camera this size.
I'm pleased with the video quality. I saw the review where someone was complaining about video quality--I'd have to guess that he's shooting in low light. What can you expect with a lens the size of a dime? I'm using it as a stand-in to replace my failing Mini-DV camcorder. DV is better, sure, but even as picky as I am, I'm willing to use this for video in the meantime. It does stabilization in 480p (not in 720p). It also has standard and high quality video modes (not sure what other reviewers used). I recommend high quality 480p with stabilization.
The battery doesn't seem to last long. I rotate through my batteries pretty frequently (once a week with "moderate" use--what's moderate?). I couldn't make an entire day at a theme park visit on one battery. Have extras.
Mine has frozen up a couple of times. Talk about weird. I just popped out the battery and put it back. Nothing was lost. All was fine. Just weird.
I'm willing to change/charge the batteries more frequently for a CLEAN DESIGN and GREAT PICTURES. I wish more cameras were like this, but the M1033 seems to be a fluke -- even among Kodak products. I would buy this camera again. BTW, I bought the bronze one -- awesome color.

Totally recommend this camera for anyone who needs quality, portability, and a good screen.
At current retail price, you'll probably be happier with an equally priced canon model, but for $80 it's pretty good.
Camera is small and fits nicely into a pocket. Battery life is good. Never used the software. Don't use the digital zoom. If image quality is your top priority then you should spend more for something with better optics and a few more manual controls.
Best use: outdoor/indoor with bright light. Casual shooting. Online video and photo sharing.

That being said, there is a serious flaw in the firmware that puts you at risk of losing picture and movie files stored on your SD card, particularly if you are a Mac user.
It should be noted that there are also some minor operational issues that myself and others have experienced, most commonly that of the camera locking up on occasion. This has happened to me perhaps 5-7 times over the past few months and is easily remidied by removing and replacing the battery. Another flaw is that now and then, a completed movie is unplayable on the camera, yet is playable on the Kodak HDTV dock or computer software such as VLC.
The BIG DANGER, though, is in utilizing a card reader (as many of us do) in order to transfer your pictures to your computer. On a Mac, the "Finder" (file browser) inserts many hidden files on your SD card, which you can see if you look at the card on a Windows computer or in the Terminal on Mac. These files evidently give the camera MAJOR problems when you insert it back in the camera. However, the problems do not seem to manifest themselves until you shoot a movie. I've had the camera corrupt every single picture and movie on the card through this design flaw. Another time, I got lucky and only about 70% of the files were corrupted.
This is a SERIOUS problem that Kodak needs to correct in a firmware update. My Kodak Z740 never had this problem.
As a workaround in the meantime, I highly reccommend using a free little utility called CleanUp smb mess, available at [...] . It removes all of the hidden files put on the card by your mac. I keep it in my dock and use it all the time! Once you drag your disk over it's icon and eject it, you won't have any problems with corrupt files. But, should you forget to do so as I have a few times, kiss those precious "Kodak moments" goodbye!!!
Really disappointed in both Polaroid AND Kodak. Won't be buying any more of their products!!
