I bought the Netgear USB wireless G adapter to enable me to network my Tivo Series 2 and take advantage of its home media capabilities. I could not be happier with the Netgear's performance. Once my Tivo had downloaded new firmware (its software version 7 is required), I simply plugged the Netgear into the USB slot. Boo-bam, worked like a charm. No configuring, no dropped signals. Good throughput. I am using a Belkin Pre-N wireless router. I was a little leery of USB wireless adapters, but the Netgear worked perfectly with no configuration.

I was a little skeptical at first about using this device... do to it's incredibly small size. However I quickly fell in love with how easy it was to install on my windows xp machine and the excellent Netgear Smart Wizard that sits in my system tray, making it possible for anyone to quickly get connected to their network. Unfortunately my original skepticism quickly came back to confront me. After using the device for only a few days my connection dropped. I had to unplug the thing and reboot my computer before I was able to get back on my network. I've only had it for about 2 weeks and I've had to unplug it and restart my computer probably 15 times to get it to work again. I never used to have problems in the past with my other wireless usb adapters so I have a good feeling that it's due to this devise. I do notice that it gets very hot if you leave it in your computer for a long time, I'm no engineer but this might be somehow related to its poor performance.

Bought this adapter so I could continue to get programming updates without a landline. Took it out of the packaging, plugged it in, changed the TiVo setting to accept a wireless network, done. That was it. A few clicks on the TiVo remote was all it took. It really couldn't have been easier. Highly recommended. Just make sure you have the updated TiVo software so it will accept wireless networks.

The sofware ship with this adapter crashes in XP and you will see a blue screen for every ten minutes. I spent couple of days to try different combinations. Finally I found a right combination. Here it is. Install only their drivers using Microsoft Hardward installation wizard and use XP Wireless Configuration console rather than Netgear configuration utility.Netgear does warn that it doesn't work with XP with piece of sheet in the box. But they don't put this information anywhere in their web site to make the decision before you buy it.

I've applied the new flash upgrade, and performance is still quite good. Most of my comments from January still apply. Setup is quick, Citrix & terminal services work without modification, and I can connect to my main office via Cisco VPN client. Games are still working too.As with most vendors, I suspect you'll have better compatibility if you use a Netgear WiFi NIC with this unit. I can get it to work with a Cisco Aironet NIC, but I cannot get WPA encryption to work. WEP (for what it's worth) works, but I'll probably have to spring for the corresponding Netgear NIC if I want to move to WPA.The print server took a hit with the flash upgrade, however. Now it will only work as long as the PCs using it never reboot. If they do, you lose the connection to the print server until the firewall is rebooted. Tech support has been, um, less than helpful in resolving the issue. For that reason, my rating still stands at 4 stars. I strongly recommend you check the printer compatibility list on Netgear's site before you count on this as a print server.A couple of other notes: - The firewall is solid. I'm a networking guy, and I've tried to hack my way in a couple of times. Nothing's perfect, but this is a good solution in the home or very small business market. The worst I've been able to do against this unit is a denial of service, which disabled the Internet connection to my home network until I rebooted the unit. - If you plan to use MSN Messenger 6.2 and/or Windows XP's Remote Assistance, you'll need to enable UPnP on this unit, which is a bit annoying, but more of a Microsoft issue. - The e-mail logging is VASTLY improved over that of the previous flash. My logs are much more manageable, and the number of false-positive security alert messages is minimal. - You can now create up to two remote access VPN tunnels with the new flash. I tried it and it works, although as a home user I can't imagine ever needing that feature. Difficult to set up, though, so unless you have a solid understanding of IPSEC VPN protocols, good luck.Still, I believe this is a good unit for a home office. For me, combining the functions of print server, wireless access point, and hardware firewall into a single device make it worth the price.

Tried and faced all sorts of problems with Windows XP SP2. Linksys 802.11b router & adapter was working fine. Thought should use this one to boost up my home netwrok speed but didn't happen. After downloading the latest XP2 driver from netgear's site (Last updated Jun 2004!!!!), can able to make it work upto some extent but now not able to connect my work machine using rdp as I have to use VPN software for my work and looks like it conflict with it. Support is not good. They made me do all those things which I had already tried. Even I mentioned the problem and what are the different steps I have already tried, I was asked to repeat them again and once didn't help, they blamed on Microsoft. I tried something on my own to make it work to at least for connecting to internet. Not much reliable and will have to go back to Linksys. Good elegent design is the best feature.

I have to say that these things are pretty sweet. I purchased 3 of these for each of my computers to avoid having to limit myself to just a desktop card or just a laptop card, and to be able to hook up any computer to my home network (I also do a lot of PC repair). I have not finished testing them properly yet though. Right now my router is not in a good location, its hanging from the ethernet cable that connects to the cable modem which is balancing on top of my curtain rod because I need to mount the router in a better location and run some coax cable to the center of the house. But I get about 18-24MBps on one of my PCs and 24-36MBps on the other two. I assume with proper mounting and antenna angling I should be able to get close to the 54MBps range. But as far as these USB adapters, my only real complaint is that WinXP doesn't have built-in drivers for them already, just to save me the extra step of having to use the install disk (I'm lazy :P)

I purchased my WGT624 v2 from amazon.com. As soon as I pulled it out of the box it was constantly rebooting (dropping me off the internet both wired and wireless). I was able to fix it though and I will tell you how and what happened. When I had this problem out of the box, I called for netgears free 90 day support. They were horrible! They answered the phone without a long wait, but they knew very little about this product. They gave me an RMA and I received the new router. Unpakced the replacement and same problem. Updated firmward to latest, and followed all the troubleshooting on the netgear site and I still coudln't fix it. Just when I was ready to return it to amazon I found out how to fix the problem. There is a setting on the router for preamable and it is set to auto by default. Auto is supposed to detect if the card(s) support short preamable (short is usually only useful when there is a lot of interference from other wireless devices in and around the home and most cards don't even support it). I changed the setting from auto to long and that fixed the reboot problems. I have gone around to as many forums as possible to try and post the solution so that others can cure themselves of this problem. It works great now that I found out what the problem was. This is not a router for a novice computer user. If you are a novice I suggest you get a linksys product. This netgear has a lot of features for the price though, and this is just a stupid problem with the firmware.Hrd2k

I installed this adapter on a desktop running windows xp service pack 2, well in range from my 54G wireless base station. Though signal is strong (often reporting at 54Mb and usually at least 12Mb) but the actual netowrk connection is very sporadic to the degree that it's almost impossible to browse any website without a long wait (and a lot of the times it simple drops). I searched Netgear's website and found an updated driver for this adapter to work with xp sp2, but after downloading and installing that, it didn't get any better. I then tried removing sp2 from my xp install and it didn't get any better either. My computer as well as my ISP are in good condition. When I tried an old Microsoft wireless-b USB adapter on the same computer, everything worked just fine. So I have to conclude that this adapter is really a piece of junk, especially when used with windows xp. I'm hoping Netgear would put out some better driver fix and I'll probably give one last try before throwing the adapter in the trash.

Although I am very happy with the other NetGear products I own I have to say that this adapter is a waste of money. It's easy to set up (I'm running Windows 2000) and starts working at first, but after less than a half hour, it flickers out and stops working entirely.I have a NetGear router and laptops using NetGear PCI wireless cards which work well, but this product is a dog. I second one of the earlier reviewers who mentioned how hot the item gets after a short time in use. My guess is that it has a design flaw that causes it to overheat and stop working. They should really go back to the drawing board on this one.

I did make sure, however, that I matched the Netgear brand to my wi-fi router. I connected it, gave it a minute or so (just in case), turned on the MSNTV2 & it worked flawlessly! Right now, it's operating in the next room, but have no doubt it will have range through the whole house. Thanks to Netgear!

I've concluded that while they advertise heavily that this unit supports WPA-Enterprise with RADIUS, it does not. It doesn't even support WPA-Personal. Netgear says it has something to do with TKIP.Further, Netgear has the cheapest tech support for product that is at least somewhat known. Therefore, they sell you something full of lies and they don't provide support worth squat. I even tried "level 2" support and they weren't able to help me.Don't waste your money on this unit.I'm getting ready file a suit in civil court to recoup my loses from this product. I cannot remember if I posyed a review on the WGT624 or not, but here it goes.I bought Netgear because of great products and support in the past. I have to say that both have declined greatly. I have the v2 of this router, and its buggy. In wireless mode, the router begins rebooting itself! I have spent some time with this so I will break down this issue here:Wireless mode turned off: no reboots whatsoever, stable.108Mbps enabled: reboots every few hoursG and B mode: reboots every 2 or 3 daysin B mode only: reboots every 5 to 6 days. When I contacted Netgear (and contacting a call center in India), it took 20 minutes to explain the problem only to have them parrot back a misinterpretation! Its not their fault, its Netgears fault for contracting with them - sure it saves money but at what cost?Their suggestion was to diable SPI firewall which did nothing. They will RMA the unit. What is strange is if you search Google for "WGT624 reboots" and you will find a host of people with this issue. Problem is Netgear is neither aware of the problem, nor willing to acknowledge the problem.I will send this in for RMA. In the meantime, I decided to buy a new wireless router - the Microsoft MN-500. I read the reviews and it received good press. I must concur that the Microsoft router is problem free, greater range, much cheaper, and simple to setup. I will review the router so look for it.Bottom line, avoid this router. If you are still willing to shell down money for a gamble, I would wait until Netgear finally acknowledges the problem that way it can be fixed!

I bought this product for the conveninece of not having to open my desktop and for the mobility- being able to transfer it from desktop to laptop. Worked great for about 2 months and then it started causing my computer to reboot byself. At first this happened with my desktop- i was convinced my computer was broken- i spent $100 on repairs (I know I got ripped off here). Until I started using it with 2 laptops and the same thing started happening. I took it to another techy who told me that this is a frequent problemt with these usb deviced and that I would have to do something to my "bio" - i said screw it- and bought a built in card. I know other people who have the same problem and it could be very costly- when you are in the middle of working on a file and it reboots. Neygear CS sucks too- they outsources and I ended up speking to some girl in India who did not understand my question and just kept reading the same script over and over again- DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Both wired and wireless computers are affected. Transfering within the LAN is no problem, I get better speeds than I did with my old routers, but trying to download from any site on the WAN, my speeds slow significantly to anywhere from 30k to 2k. I purchased this product after Netgear posted its long-promised 2.0 firmware for the WAG511 card, finally giving it 108Mbps support. The good:The product works as advertised; Turbo G mode gives me excellent speeds even at a modest distance from the router. The not so perfect:Netgear's Turbo mode support is incompatible with b/g mode. You can either set the router to b/g mode (max 54Mbps) or you can set it to 108 mode (any wireless device that does not support 108 mode will not see the router). By comparison, on October 13 2003 competitor D-Link announced firmware upgrades to add "Dynamic Mode" to their products, supporting 108Mbps mixed with b/g mode. Netgear's website states: "A firmware upgrade will be available allowing mix mode (802.11g and 108Mbps turbo) operation in the near future," so hopefully Netgear will match D-Link's features soon. Also, there is no way to disable NAT on the WGT624 with the current firmware (rev 1.1.1). This annoys me, as I really just wanted a Wireless Access Point, but Netgear has no WAP with 108Mbps support, and 108Mbps support is why I bought the WGT624.**Update**: I wrote the above originally on October 23 2003. In January 2004, Netgear finally provided mixed mode support across all versions of the original WGT624 (apparently different firmware is required for different serial numbers). Also, there is now a newer version of the hardware, dubbed the WGT624v2. Newer firmware for the WGT624v2 allegedly improves SPI performance if you use it (I don't). No hardware upgrades are available if you have the original WGT624. Unfortunately, Amazon.com doesn't have a separate ASIN for the v2 model so it is difficult to tell if you will receive an original WGT624 or a v2 when you purchase on Amazon.com.

After years of using Linksys, I heard good reviews on Netgear and wanted to upgrade to 802.11g, particularly, the "Super G" they offered. Although I haven't fully tested the "Super" mode, the standard "g" works flawlessly. Superior range over linksys (40% better speed performance compared to Linksys). As for setup, it's a breeze. There isn't much in the way of manuals, but the software tutorial is a snap. 64 or 128 bit encryption and you can select MAC addresses to really put forth effort to prevent hackers from gaining access, or simply to prevent a "leech" from stealing your wireless connection. In light of the upcoming days of streaming music and video around the house, this puppy does it and does it well.

OK, I'm gonna have to laugh. Many of the reviews you see around the Web for electronics are laden with complaints about customer service. The reason I have to laugh is that I think this is more a symptom of our self-service society than any given company's customer service. I mean, I've been having issues with an item I ordered from Home Depot, and the hospital where my son is getting treatment has lost his blood samples and then lied about it.But I digress. This product was a breeze to set up and has been working flawlessly for seven months. I've had several Netgear products in the past, and have never had a problem. I'm using encryption and MAC-filtering and both were easy to configure via the browser interface. My only complaint is WPA support. This particular AP doesn't support it, and according to Netgear's website, never will. The "V2" will, but not this model. When I first purchased this, I was under the impression that 802.11g and WPA were synonymous. Apparently not. This AP is 802.11g compliant, but does not support WPA. If that is important to you, get the V2.

I purchased this access point about a month ago for my girlfriend's house. Her existing setup consisted of a Zoom cable modem connected to an SMC Barricade 4 port broadband router/firewall. I went over to her house, plugged an ethernet cable into the router and the acess point, plugged in a wireless PC Card into her laptop, and it was ready to go. All together no more than 15 minutes to get it up and running. I haven't had a chance to play with the advanced features and security, but from the initial setup, I have to say that I'm impressed, perfect for networking newbies (although I am not, I like the idea that this hardware is easy to use and easy to set up, as all hardware should be).Performance wise, I couldn't be happier. As a test, I had the AP set up in a room on the second floor of her house and walked outside with the laptop. Roughly 70-80% connection quality around 3/4 of the exterior of the house and roughly 50-60% connection quality on the farthest side of the house, which is not bad IMO considering it's going through several walls. The AP also works flawlessly with both 802.11b and 802.11g clients.Although when a "b" client connects, all "g" clients are dropped to 11Mbps, this is a behavior that is common to all current generation "g" chipsets. I am a "b" client while all the users in my gf's house are "g" clients, works flawlessly.Aside from the above, the Netgear WG602 is probably the best looking AP that's out there on the market. It's very stylish and unobtrusive. Sizewise, it's not much larger than a sandwich. It comes with a very practical vertical stand for added convenience. As a side note, Netgear is perhaps the only manufacturer that gets these stands right; it actually holds the AP up stably. In summary, this is an excellent choice for customers who already have some sort of wired network in place. It's great for those who are less technically inclined as it should pretty much work right out of the box.

At about 1 foot I was connected at 100% out in the living room about 30 feet away through one wall it was between 78-86%. Then about 60 feet away through 4-5 walls it was 60%. Even at 60% the connection flew. It was just like I was connected through a wire. I then walked outside my house about 200 feet and was still connected. My dad has a Linksys 802.11b access point and can only go about 40 feet. It seems the 802.11g makes a big difference on signal strength. The access point is very stylish and the stand works great. You need to point the antenna in the right direction to make a stronger connection. Another plus is that you can replace the antenna with a more powerful one if needed. You need to secure the access point soon after you set it up. I went into the setup features of the access point and turned on authentication type to shared key. Then I turned on WEP and used the passcode feature by typing in a word. Then I turned on MAC security and added the PC card's MAC address (which I found in the About tab) to the allowed addresses. Then I rebooted the access point. At this point of course the laptop could not connect because it was not using WEP so I went to the PC card and told it to use WEP security and used the same passcode that I had used on the access point. And then told the Netgear Wireless PC card to re-scan. It found the access point and the entire setup including tight security was done.

I just got this a week ago along with a Netgear WG511 PC Card. It looks really neat. And works great. The setup was a breeze. I just connected the access point to an ethernet switch connected to the router. Installed the PC card and it immediately detected the WLAN. Configuring the access point took a little while because my network's IP range is from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.255. The access point comes with a preset IP address of 192.168.0.227. To access the AP from a PC that is connected to my network over ethernet, I had to change the IP address of that PC to start with 192.168.0. The PC card shows the signal strength as "EXCELLENT", "VERY GOOD", "GOOD", "LOW", "VERY LOW" etc. I did some benchmarking on this. In the same room, the signal strength is shown as "EXCELLENT". I copied 25MB of files from the other PC to my notebook. It took 1 min 7 seconds. Over an ethernet connection between the same two computers, it took only 53 seconds. Then I took the notebook to another room (2 walls) and the signal strength was shown as "VERY GOOD". With 3 walls in between it was still "VERY GOOD". Interesting thing is that I didn't see any noticeable delay in copying the same 25MB files. I took the notebook to upto about 180ft (2 walls in between). The signal strength became "VERY LOW" and it also got disconnected after a while. With more than 2 walls in between, irrespective of the distance, it becomes very unreliable. I keep my access point in the basement in a corner room. I cannot get signal on my ground floor at the opposite corner of the house. I think it is safe to assume that we should get upto 200 ft with no walls in between.

Back in November, I tried version 1 of this product. And I wrote a review saying that many of its features just did not work.In addition I wrote that Netgear tech support never responded to any of my email requests for support, and that was six months ago. Their website said allow one day.Anyway, they have now released a firmware update. And all the problems I previously complained about are gone now. For example, it now works with Citrix and the error messages are now in "better" EnglishProduct seems to work fine out of the box. No complaints. I give it 4 stars and not 5 because the print server part of this product is pretty useless unless you happen one of the few printers it supports. And because of their continued horrible tech support.

It's fast, easy to set-up and fun to sit on the couch and browse. For two or more people living under one roof with lap-tops, it definitely makes sense. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner. For those of you not router savvy (myself included), connect the computer you intend to be wireless through the router FIRST with a hardline, make an internet connection and THEN make a wireless connection. You may have to adjust settings in (XP) control panel. ...

I've set up hundreds of firewalls and routers over the years, wired and wireless, and I've seen all sorts of outrageous manufacturer claims about ease of use and functionality. This is the first product that delivered. I switched to Cable from DSL and when my old equipment wouldn't cut it, I bought this little gem. Plugged it in, auto-configured everything, and it worked the first time. My last router took me hours to get set up right. This one figured it out by itself. If you need a new router, buy this one. Downside? The range is not as good as my old wireless hub.A few months ago, I moved the router, and the range picked up to expected distances. So I guess the antenna pattern was just different than my last one.

Ужасно

I recently upgraded from the WGR614 to this. From a router and wireless standpoint, this unit is MUCH better than the previous Netgear routers I had. The pretty silver units are nice for consumers, but I needed more options and more range. This unit does it all. However, and it is a BIG however, the Print Server (which was the main reason to spring for the total upgrade) does not support my HP PSC 2410 nor my EPSON Stylus CX5200. Those two things in themselves make it impossible for me to recommend the router overall. None of the Netgear products support this, and it makes no sense, since most people buy small multifunctions for their homes now.

That's my observation. Ever since I installed this as a replacement for my D-Link DI-764, I noticed a drop in performance - downloading web pages and such. I thought it might just be some slowness to my cable provider but the problem persisted - Upon tinkering, I noticed that performance went from 1300-1700 to 2600-2900 Kbps when I disabled the router's Stateful Packet Inspection. That's a pretty big performance hit for SPI (in my book). Other than that, it's delightful and the wireless works great, can't use 108 much since it only works on channel 6 and my neighbor laid claim to channel 6 a long time ago.

Bought this to compliment my linksys 4-port router. Setup is simple and straightforward. Everything is up and running in 10 minutes with most of the time spent on configuring the client (linksys 802.11b PC CARD). The built-in management UI is taking a minimalistic approach comparing to my 802.11b linksys wireless router. I'd expect more improvements will come in future firmware updates. In terms of functionality/performance it's decent but less than what I expected. The signal strength tends to be between 45-100%. When accessing from 40 feet with two walls in-between, the signal strength drops to 45%. In comparison to the linksys wireless router, the linksys router has better signal and higher throughput in the 802.11b mode. I received an Orinoco 802.11a/b/g combo card last night. It took me about 30 minutes to get everything going while I played around with different security modes and settings. Under g-mode operation with the Orinoco card, signal strength is higher than the b-mode/linksys combo. Overall I'm quite happy with the g-mode performance.
