I purchased the wn2500 to extend my wifi into the back yard and my garage. It raised my wifi signal from one bar to 5 bars, goes thru my large metal garage door without any problems what so ever.I couldn't get the wpa to work very well so I manually set it up which is easy and I'm totally happy with it's performance. My whole network system is netgear, router, range extender and wifi adapter in the garage, Roku players and other. It's been almost a month now and I must say this extender is fantasic. It's very easy to connect to, and of cource it's password protected. My power bars maintain 4 and 5 bars strong (2.4G and 5G)where as before I barely had one bar when in the back yard or garage. I perfer to use 5G when I can and this extender allows me that option and maintains the power to do so.I would recommend the WN2500 with ease.

I am constantly having to reboot this router because the Wi-Fi is constantly getting into a state where none of my devices can connect. I wake up a computer and when it tries to connect using the Wi-Fi it times out. At other times it says another computer is using a particular IP address. I had none of these problems with the Actiontec I got from Qwest. It looks like I can get that back now. YAY!

For reference, I live in a 1 bedroom apartment that's essentially shaped like one large rectangle with one wall to separate the bedroom from the rest of the apartments. I purchased this router in September of 2010, set it up next to the TV in the living room, and throughout the year I'd had problems with the wireless connection disconnecting or simply not working in the bedroom. In August of 2011, I upgraded my internet connection to Optimum's 50Mbps service, but noticed I was only getting around 20Mbps when plugged directly into on of the wired router ports. In November I noticed I had problems just watching videos and after doing more speed testing I discovered that through the router I was getting 2.8Mbps down maximum, but if I plugged directly into my cable modem I was getting 51+Mbps down.I called service for some support, and they informed me that I'd have to pay $70 to get 6 months of support, or $40 for 1 time support for their clearly broken product. For that price I can buy a brand new router that doesn't suck. Never again will I buy a Netgear router. This is the second I've bought, and the last one also broke on me.

I picked up this router for two reasons: (1) I wanted to upgrade from my Wireless-G to Wireless-N (draft), to make file transfers faster between my computers; (2) I wanted to give whichever router I liked less to my parents, so I could have wifi there when I visit them. My existing router was a Linksys WRT54GS, which had good wireless-G speeds (I couldn't complain) and excellent uptime, stability, and reliability. It's main drawback is that the firmware doesn't have some features I want, such as the ability to set stable IP addresses to my PCs, and it can't be flashed to Tomato or DD-WRT. When I received the router, I decided to replace it, without using the Windows-based setup wizard (networking equipment shouldn't requires Windows), and set it up in the manner of an advanced router user.First Impressions/Hardware ImpressionsThis router looks very nice. The lines are clean (there is no external antenna). The plastic is shiny. The lights on the front are stylish. The only thing I didn't like was that the manual said that the unit MUST be used in the vertical position, due to concerns about operating temperature (and probably the internal antenna, too). This is fine and all, but I liked the ability of the Linksys and other routers I've owned to be wall-mounted or positioned horizontally. The router is set up thoughtfully, and I like the on/off switch; I've never seen one on a router before, and I don't intend to use it, but it's nice to be able to turn off a piece of electronic equipment for a change! The packaging was spartan, sensible, and minimal, which I liked.Initial SetupThe router comes with a CD with a Windows-based setup wizard. As a Mac and Linux user, this made me a bit nervous. Netgear seems to understand this, and helpfully point you toward the help files on the CD-ROM, which in turn point you toward "manual" setup instructions. The instructions were clear, concise, and had clear illustrations. They are minimal, however. They don't outline the capabilities of the router's firmware, which I was very curious about.FirmwareAs far as my Internet research told me, open-source, third-party firmware such as DD-WRT is not compatible with this router. I would love to run alternate firmware on my old Linksys router, but the version I have (version 5 of WRT54GS) doesn't support it. Fortunately for me, this router's firmware has a lot more functionality. Using the manual setup instructions, I found I could connect to the router using the address [...] instead of its IP address, which I thought was a nice touch. (Routers like this one have a web interface, which lets you adjust all available settings from one of your PCs.) The firmware presents you with a three-pane interface. The right-hand pane is context-sensitive help for each function. The contextual help is pretty useful, actually, for intermediate-to-advanced users. Most home users wouldn't look at it, I don't think. Anyway, the first time you connect to the router, it automatically checks for firmware update--a good feature. The best feature of this router, to an advanced user with a home network set up, is IP address reversation: You can force the router to give the same IP address to each of your computers, every time they connect. This is great for home servers, and is so easy to set up on this router, as compared to setting up static IPs on each computer. The router also has Quality of Service (QoS) features, which allow you to shape how much bandwidth is used for internet, voice, instant messaging, video games, and so on. Personally, I don't use this, but I would have loved it back when I was a VoIP customer. There are, of course, many features that I consider standard, such as DHCP and port forwarding. All in all, I was impressed with the stock firmware and don't feel a need to replace it.SpeedLarge (1 GB+) file transfers between my wired Linux server and my wireless-N MacBook are faster than with my old wireless-G router. I'm happy. I can't compare it to other wireless-N routers, though. As for Internet speed, it certainly seems snappy, though it could just be my imagination. I am not sure if it is any faster than my wireless-G router was; if anything, my cable modem is slower than this router can handle, so I didn't expect much change. What I Didn't TestI'm an advanced user, and don't mind setting up the wireless network and security myself, through the firmware. Therefore, I didn't test the WiFi Protected Setup feature. I didn't test the wireless range because I have a rather small apartment and it isn't an issue I'm concerned with. I didn't get Quality of Service because I tend to use the Internet for only one thing at a time. I've only had it for a short time, so I cannot comment on stability or robustness.Remember ToIf you buy this router, remember to set a new password for it, set up Wifi security, and change the SSID (the network name) so you can easily identify it!VerdictI really like this router's firmware features, and think that I wi

Going through some old receipts, ran across this. I paid $99 at Best Buy in early January 2010; now its late March 2012; that's a good run, particularly considering the problems others have reported. It was pricey, but worth it. Having a consolidated dsl modem and wireless router has been convenient and easy compared to the prior separates; there has been no downside, except yes, it runs hot enough to cause some concern. We watch Netflix through this; my middle kid complains that there can be lag if he's playing Starcraft and others are online (guess what, Dad doesn't care). If something happens to this one, I'll try and get another (used or refurbished if necessary).

Bought it couple months ago and the router seems to be keeping up. I use it quite intensively. I have 11 devices connected via wifi and 2 via ethernet. I also have a 2TB hard drive connected to the router, which acts like a dlna server as well, so I can view my pictures and videos directly to my dlna devices. The only problem I have is that since it is in my basement, data transfer to the hard drive is around 1-2 MBps. Hopefully, after I get a range extender, that increases.Update 5/8/2012---It has been over 9 months since I installed this routed. Have had no problems with reboots or drop connections. After some horrible Netgear routers that I have used over the years, this one seems to be solid. Netgear has finally started to make some reliable products.Configuration:2 Wired Connections: One to an 8 port Netgear switch, another one to my Vonage.10 Wireless Connections: Phones, PCs, Mac, Tablets2 TB WD MyBook via USB. Great thing is that this router has dlna server in built for the USB port. Movies, Pictures, Songs stored on the hard drive can be accessed via any device that supports dlna.----

Basically we just switched to a Motorola fiber network locally and I guess the ISP says Motorola and Linksys can't talk to each other. So they are giving these out for free. Our Linksys was a dual band fast wifi router. This POS is limited to 150 mbps. We are used to 300mbps on the wifi so it's rather slow. Range is horrid, and only if your on the same level as the router will you get much of anywhere. Wired. well I prefer that because it's always fast. And nothings changed here. So if you need a cheap router and it's free.. nothing wrong here. Just don't expect to use this for WIFI. At least not this model :( Heck my Samsung Smartphone keeps dropping the signal because it's so poor.

Installed the V4 version Dec 2011. It works well. HOWEVER: If you are a Mac user with OSX operating system, expect some hassle in setting it up - particularly security. The installation CD is useless except that it contains a PDF copy of the manual (which you must have to make any sense of setup). Netgear makes no mention of Apple products or the OSX operating system - Windows only.In order to setup security (encryptation) I had to dig out an old PC running Windows XP, and connect to the WG602 directly via an ethernet cable. From then on the main glitch is that Mac OSX does not support WEP security with this unit. It does support WPA (discovered this only by trial and error). Once I managed to get everything configured, the unit works well and covers my entire house (a large solid masonry structure with thick walls).Mac users may want to consider an Apple hotspot rather than this unit; more expensive but much less hassle setting it up.

Within a week the wireless connection started dropping at least 3-4 times a day. After trying some basic things like re-flashing the firmware, reconfiguring the router etc, the tech support lady said that it could be hardware problem. Set-up was cumbersome as well. As someone else has also mentioned in his/her review, the set-up CD was a complete waste. It couldn't detect the hardwired internet connection despite of doing it correctly. When I tried it through the browser, the set-up could not be completed on my Windows 7 laptop, I had to use my XP to do it. Then within a week the connection started dropping. This Rangemax was a replacement of a Netgear g-router which worked well. But within a year and a half, it gave up on me. Wireless speed came down to ~2mbps from around 15mbps.Have already returned the Rangemax and bought a Cisco Linksys. Working well so far. Atleast the set-up was very easy. May be its my bad, but no more Netgear products from now on.

I did see where others did not have success with this unit on their particular laptop. Well, it works just fine on the HP Probook. I bought this when the POS Atheros Wi-Fi Adapter apparently died--it would not work--I did not take the laptop apart. The install was quick (would have been quicker if I had not been so impatient...), and it works. Probably a bit slower than the N300 or N600, but it provided a good solid connection that allowed me to stream video from CNN, if that helps.Simple, cost-effective solution to a problem with HP Connection Manager (error code 80080005) that I have not found anyone with a solution. Ditch the Atheros and get this.Good stuff!

I purchased this router last November after many months of searching the internet to actually find it available somewhere. I wound up paying about $186 with shipping and handling but quite honestly it was well worth it. This router is OPEN SOURCE, so you can flash many firmware flavors onto it and customize each and every one of them until you get the perfect configuration for your own needs.Physical rating/construction quality: 5/5. The router is very sleek looking and lightweight.Ease of setup: 3/5 for the sole reason that I immediately dove into the world of open-source (i.e. ditched the out-of-box firmware). The out-of-box firmware is very easy to set up for your home network, but just didn't apply to my own experience. As a Computer Engineer I spent many hours flashing and re-flashing lots of different firmwares to play with each, and it was really lots of fun! It's not the easiest process and shouldn't be done by someone without some technical experience, but I HIGHLY recommend checking out [...] for step-by-step instruction on how to get the most from this router and download tons of new firmwares.Extra features: The router has USB support, meaning you can plug in an external hard drive directly to it and share it over your network! Definitely an excellent feature to have for having access to your important files amongst many computers. The WNR3500L is a Wireless N router, far out-performing B & G see: [...] for comparison charts and details. Very easy to make this router a bridge to your current wireless network (i.e. if you have a non-wireless device that you need to be physically connected to a router). And last but certainly not least, yes you guessed it.. OPEN SOURCE! Different firmwares (DD-WRT, Tomato) provide many useful features such as real-time bandwidth monitoring along with many other network admin tools and technical tweaks you can't find anywhere else.Signal Strength: 5/5 I've tested the range on this device with professional HP laptops, Macbook Pros, and various netbooks and I've never had a problem. I did not actually measure the distances from the router (and for this I apologize.. I guess that would be pretty useful here) but I don't foresee anyone having any issues within reasonable distances.Customer Support: N/A. Sorry folks... For starters I don't know how Netgear handles customer support on this model, but honestly I avoid all customer support as I support my own devices. BUT, again at [...] you'll find innumerable forums and walk-through's that will guide you through everything you'll encounter, so the support there is 5/5.Long story short: 5/5 for power-users who want the most from their stuff and aren't afraid to get their hands dirty and have some fun.-Nick (NEMX)P.S. I'm currently running DD-WRT on mine. Happy routing!

I was worried about its performance because I never used a Netgear before, but I'm glad it didn't disappoint me!This router is so simple to setup and has plenty of guides to help you plug things in for the novice and it also has the admin information right on the router along with username and password in case you ever forget what it is if you ever reset router, just be sure to change the username and password for security reasons! I also got the router working with my connection straight out of the box with no configuration! Truly plug and play! You can view that in my video review.I use it wired to my desktops and wirelessly to my laptop and my cellphone which is a Nokia E63-2 Nokia E63-2 Unlocked Phone with 2 MP Camera, 3G, Wi-Fi, Media Player, and MicroSD Slot--U.S. Version with Warranty (Ultramarine Blue) and it works flawlessly. Now this router has the word "range max" in it for good reason! To give you an example of the range of this router, I went 310 feet and my cellphone still picked up the signal and I was browsing the web! When I reached 312 feet the signal cut off. If that's not range I don't know what is! Also if your wondering how I know the exact range, I used google maps to measure distance from my house to how far I walked, yes I can be that detailed at times, LMAO.It has a nice simple admin section to configure the router. If your wondering about security features, you can set the security of your router to these:WEPWPA-PSK [TKIP]WPA2-PSK [AES]WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]You can also block websites easily in the admin section too!The admin section has these categories to enter and configure:Setup WizardAdd WPS ClientSetup Basic Settings Wireless SettingsContent Filtering Logs Block Sites Block Services Schedule E-mailMaintenance Router Status Attached Devices Backup Settings Set Password Router UpgradeAdvanced Wireless Settings Port Forwarding / Port Triggering WAN Setup LAN Setup Dynamic DNS Static Routes Remote Management UPnPWeb Support Knowledge Base DocumentationAll in all it is a fantastic reliable router which did not disappoint me!

I had an old Buffalo wireless g router that I got for free with a computer and it was difficult to set passwords but once it was hooked up it lasted for 4 years and still works. My brother gave me the Netgear 150 and so far I've not purchased a wireless router. Gotta love that...The setup software worked great on his computer, it was an XP OS and so that is nice, but when I got it I wanted to reset the password and all that and usually I avoid the cd that things come with. So I read the instructions included and typed the netgear address for the router and it asked for the default username and password, simple, it's in the instructions very clearly. Once I was in the setup page I was sooo relieved to find the adjustments easy to work with for Netgear. I simply changed the connection password and updated the firmware in like 5 minutes. I had my network secure, updated firmware, and now I know I can easily change anything on my router without jumpint through hoops like most other routers I've worked with like Linkseys or Buffalo. Now to performanceJust moving from wireless g to n I finally was able to top my ISP's 3mbps download speed and get the speed I'm paying for. I don't play games, I'm 38 years old, I mostly use my computer for online school word and shopping, but nonetheless if ur not a gaming nerd or have intensive needs for the internet, but you still like to tinker with settings and so on then this router is perfect for the money.

This is possibly the worst gateway you could ever purchase. Save yourself time headaches and mental anguish not to mention countless hours on the phone with netgear's very unhelpful customer service. This router/gateway would only work properly if I was within a 10ft radius of it and this is in all seriousness. Anyone that requests tech logs of what I had to go through with netgear is free to have it and see just how much they care about the customer's experience. Signal drops constantly, would not maintain a connection with the server, I got a new 2wire gateway and it works perfectly. I can surf the web on my Ipad from my living room again (650sq ft apt.) not to mention I can walk out to my parking lot and it works as well. It was also replaced once and the new gateway too did not work and I wasted $17.00 on shipping.

Device seems stable in router-only for a web server, email server, ssh, and a few other services. I don't plan on using the VPN features for my company provides me with cisco software. My experience with NetGear metal blue boxes: FVS318v1, FVS336v1, and [obsolete?] fr114 have been good. They've been stable enough as long as you leave them alone and not make soft or hard adjustments, configurations or cables that is.My FVS318v1 have been running since 2004. Its stable as long as I don't plug/unplug cables.I don't remember what happened to my FR114. I remember it was good but probably replaced it with something more advanced. Or it may have been that one of its ports fried. While this is a stable device, it is dated. It features wireless 802.11g but it does have current security features like WPA2 with RADIUS.The device operates cold. After removing the one screw at the bottom and removing the cover carefully because the single short unshielded antenna wire is also attached to the bottom half, then powering up the unit for a few hours, I found that the chips [integrated circuits/ICs] are just warm.Issues:------Unplugging cables can make the device stop routing, but not completely crash. I'm not sure what are the factors. Most of the time I can change cables without any noticeable problems. Its nice that this device has port address translation or PAT, but it was a little confusing at first. The manual only mentions that a port like HTTPD 80 can be translated. But it does work. BTW the manual kind of sucks. It sometimes refers this device, FVG318v2 as the FVS318v3.Lets say you have a web cam running on port 80 and you already have a web server on port 80, and you want to translate it to port 3000 so that a user on the internet can go to [...]:3000 for the camera. You would "add service" and choose port 3000. Then go to "firewall" and "inbound" rules. You would choose the newly created service (port 3000) and point it to your camera's IP and click "translate" and put in port 80 (referring to your camera). There's no power switch, I guess its not a big deal. But there is a reset button. It takes approximately 50 seconds to boot. Some notes:----------WWAN or WiFi light is useless. It just stays on if wireless is activated and off if disabled. Data transfer is not indicated at all.Otherwise, nice light show. The eight ports plus the WAN port shows actual data transfer so that you can kind of guess what's going on by the flickering.Misc:-----It seems to be capable of having two WAN ports but the second WAN just isn't wired. My guess is from boot-up logs. It records that WAN 0 is up and WAN 1 is off. There's also a secret telnet port. I don't know what the user/password is yet. Root and admin doesn't seem to work.

From my humble perspective, router installation has existed in the domain of voodoo practitioners and nerdofites with thick glasses focused 4 inches from the screen for hours on end.I've lived with my AT&T 2Wire DSL modem for over four years now, suffering slow speeds and reliably spotty, poor coverage in my 2500 sq.ft. house. No longer could I tolerate this life style. I bit on the Netgear DGND3300, purchased online, not from the big box store, living dangerously on the edge, I know. (It's also $40 cheaper online.)Arriving at my house, centering myself with 5 minutes of yoga, deep breathing exercises and a promise to control both temper and blood pressure, I opened the package and began installation.I installed the CD and clicked on the wizard. "30 minute installation time" the screen displayed. We'll see about that. The pressure began to build. On I went. The interface experience is not as reassuring and coaxing as the Logitech or Apple experience, but it's in the same neighborhood. Before I knew it and yes about half an hour later, with different colored lights happily blinking on two sides of the unit, (and not a red light to be seen), I'm at the registration screen! I'm completely done, breathing normally, stress level at zero, hard wire and wireless internet connection blazing away. Speeds consistently bump at and above 5mbps, the top of my current service level. The EVO 4G, net-book and DVD machine are significantly faster. It almost takes your breath away.Final thoughts? If you're hesitant about how reliable Netgear's "ease of installation" claims are, take it from one who shared that fear and finds it without merit. All that's required to complete installation is your current Internet Service Provider's (ISP) Username and Password you have designated to get onto the internet. It is not the password you've setup to get into your current router. If you don't know it, Netgear includes current phone numbers for the major national ISPs with suggestions for what to say to the ISP representative. That and creating your "passphrase" are all you have to enter.Don't live in fear any longer.

Had to have a friend hook it up though because I didn't know how and the instructions were a bit vague for a tech novice. Although it is refurbished you wouldn't know it. It came in original packaging. I had to re-check to see if I ordered the new one.
