I didn't buy this on Amazon, but I am so mad at Netgear and their so-called support that I am writing this review to let people know what they might be in for if they buy any of their products.Just over a year ago I came home from vacation to discover that my Tivo's had almost run out of programming data since they had been unable to connect to the internet for almost two weeks... I went upstairs into my office and discovered that my old Linksys WRT-54G had finally bit the dust. Well, I thought, I have been wanting to upgrade to Wireless N for a very long time, so I went down to Best Buy. This Netgear was the top of the line that was available at that store, and I bought it.I don't know what the reviewers are talking about; having to run the CD to set it up... I set it up just by logging in to the router and configuring everything manually like I have always done. I don't think the CD ever came out of the box... I just threw everything away as soon as I got it working.Smash cut to a year later... I logged in to the router to set up port forwarding and a fixed IP adress for my son's new xBox 360... He managed to trip over his ipod cable and somehow managed to drag his xBox off the top of his dresser, which completely destroyed it when it hit the hardwood floor in his room. When I logged in to the router, it notified me that there was a firmware update, and did I want to install it? Without giving it so much as a seconds thought, I hit the update button. It downloaded the update, and began installing it. I sat there watching the screen for a little while, and then grew impatient so I went out and changed the oil in my Tundra... Half an hour later, I was back in the office, to be greeted with the same screen saying it was installing and not to shut off or disconnect the router...I waited for over an hour and a half, it simply never finished... When I finally had enough, I unplugged it and no surprise, it was dead. Then I disconnected the router and plugged my office computer directly into the modem, so I could go online. Once online, I contacted Netgears crack support team. (Sarcasm intended...)The Netgear support was completely ridiculous... The guy was from India, very difficult for me to understand. (I have always worked at companies that were like the United Nations, with every nationality on the planet. I can communicate pretty well with people that have very heavy accents, but this guy was amazingly dificult to understand...) I spent an hour and a half on the phone with him. The phone call went like this: "Hit the start button, then in the search box type C as in cat. Now type M as in Mary."Despite my repeated attempts to get him to tell me what he wanted me to do, he would never do it. He literally spelled out painstakingly every single letter as if he were instructing a 7 year old to open a command prompt window (cmd.exe) and input "IPCONFIG"Then IPCONFIG /RELEASE and IPCONFIG /RENEW. Then he went through all the things I had already done as far as resetting the router, resetting the modem, rebooting the computer, etc... I pleaded with him to try and find out if there was some file he could email me that I could restore my router with, but he simply ignored me and continued with his script... I'm guessing with that last part, but I swear this was the most infuriating waste of time of my life! I must have begged him a hundred times to just tell me what he wanted to do, but he absolutley would not do it... He would pause while I was talking and then continue "now press I as in India. Now press P as in Paul"Then, after he determined that the router wasn't working (No sh_t, Sherlock... That's why I called you) he blamed me for the update hanging because I didn't disconnect all the devices that were connected to the router first. I told him that was ridiculous, you don't have to disconnect access points before making a change to the router, they will just disconnect when it goes offline and reconnect after it's back. He told me "No, you are wrong, you have to unplug everything that is currently accessing the internet before updating the firmware, or else this will happen. This is why you broke your router!" Then he gave me the hard sell to buy support service "For all your devices, not just the router. Also your Tivo's and your access points, all your computers for only $99.99 a year!"I told him that as far as I was concerned, he owed me $250 for the last hour and a half, and that if this was an indication of their support services, I would pay $500 a year to never have to call them again... This was an hour and a half of my life I will never get back...I work literally one block from Netgear headquarters in San Jose... They are right down the street from my job... I bought Netgear because I wanted to buy from an American company that made good products...I went back to the Netgear forums, which I had looked at briefly while on Netgear's site getting the phone number for their support, and the more I looked a

I've been using two of these units in a fairly large house for about four years+. We have very thick adobe and masonry walls that obliterate wi-fi signal from our main router, so we use the power lines to feed wireless to the rest of the house through the WGX102 access points.I'm amazed by the silliness that has evidently produced so many one-star reviews. Comments suggesting they can't be used on a secure network or won't work with a wireless router are false, to the point of absurdity. Maybe Amazon shouldn't be calling this a "range extender." I'm wondering whether some negative reviewers tried to use them as repeaters, which they're not. They must be used in tandem with a Homeplug 1.0 powerline adapter connected via Ethernet cable to the router or modem. These are amazing, versatile devices. Even Netgear's manual doesn't fully or clearly explain all the ways they can be used, with both access point and DHCP router capabilities. Most powerline devices are just adapters or "bridges" that must be connected with a separate access point at the remote end, but these also contain a wireless transmitter AND a DHCP server. For most networks, they're about as plug and play as possible when used as 54G access points. They're shipped in that default configuration, with DHCP and encryption turned off. (They're getting wired Ethernet signal over the power lines via the adapter wired to your modem or router, so whatever wireless encryption you might be using on your current router is not encrypting the signal to/from the WGX102.) With a single click on the web browser interface, the device can be configured as a wireless DHCP router, and WEP can be activated with one more check box. This allows their use to create a secure but isolated subnet for guests, if desired, so they won't have access to your whole network. We have one in our guest bedroom for that purpose. In default mode, the WEP security is disabled, but as noted, that also can be quickly fixed via the web browser interface. These devices easily provide enough throughput for streaming HD video from services like Amazon or Netflix, or with your own DNLA server. Signal is surprisingly robust. The only real drawback to them is that they use WEP encryption (if you choose) and lack WPA encryption support. For most users, that is not a real issue, although it may be for the paranoids. Also, they're Homeplug 1.0, so they won't work on a network using the newer Homeplug AV devices (unless you add a Homeplug 1.0 adapter, of course.) One other potential issue is that the default IP address (192.168.0.101) is within the default DHCP range for many routers, so it may already be in use by a computer or other device on your network. So for use as an AP only, keep it off the network until you've given it an IP address outside your router's DHCP range. The easiest way to do this may be just to unplug your main router until you've made the change, using a network interface manually configured to connect with the WGX102.So, overall, I'm giving this five stars, mainly for its versatility and strong throughput. Getting the most out of them does require some rudimentary IP knowledge, perhaps. So, if you're the kind who uses the "wizard" to set up your router, these may not be your cup of tea. But I'm no networking guru, and have found them to perform well beyond expectations.

The router alone is 2-stars - my experience with Netgear customer support bumps it down to 1-star.I originally bought this router when FiOS wasn't available in my area, and I was forced to buy a router for our cable internet. When the router functions, it functions adequately. There's even a couple of features (traffic monitoring) that seem convenient. As many, many people have noted, this router has serious problems with dropping its connection. It didn't start immediately - I purchased this router in November 2011, and it started giving me trouble in July 2012. Here's what I've discovered:- At any point, the router can simply lose its connections and/or lock up. I'm not quite sure what is literally happening within the router. All I know is that the any connection between the router and any clients is gone. This is not simply the internet (for all I know, the router is still networked properly to the cable modem). No computer or device (wireless OR wired) can even access or ping the router address (192.168.1.1). The only solution is to shut off the router and turn it back on.- I've had issues sometimes getting the connection back. Sometimes I have to restart the router again. I may also be simply impatient - the router seems to need upwards of 3 minutes to fully connect back. There is also a phase where I can connect to the router (192.168.1.1) and some programs (such as Skype) even function properly - but any web addresses fail with DNS lookup errors. Usually this takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes to restore full connectivity (beyond that I restart the router again).- I had heard that Netgear customer support is poor, but I decided to try anyway. After being told that I've eclipsed the 2 or 3 month free phone support period (with my 8 month old router), I would have to subscribe for anything to be done. The service rep also repeatedly tried to insinuate that the problem was with my "network" and not the router (load of crap). I told the service rep that I would rather spend money on a new router and never buy a Netgear again than buy a subscription plan for service on an 8 month old malfunctioning router. Given that, he again tried to push on me that a new router wouldn't solve the problem, and when I stayed firm, he offered a complementary transfer to a real technician. Ah ha! I could finally talk to someone who knows what they're talking about! ... The phone rang 10 times, then automatically hung up on me. Just wow.The funny part is that this isn't the first problem with Netgear routers I've experienced. My parents-in-law had an old Netgear WGR614 router. I don't know how long they had it before it had problems, but every couple days it would drop its wireless connection (wired stayed on), and in order to restore it, we had to go and reset the router. At least that came back on almost instantly once reset.I've researched this a bit, and it looks like the WNR2000 isn't the only Netgear model with this problem. This 2010 forum thread [Google "netgear forums router 51276"] describes problems with the WNR3700 router that seem almost identical. I've tested some of the solutions on here, to no effect.- Reducing the MTU from 1500 to 1400 did not solve or alter my problem.- Putting in a 3:30am-4:00am wireless "off" time I'm not sure about - just started it today. I doubt it will work, but one can always pray.I've seen various issues (overheating being the most likely) blamed for all these Netgear issues - all I know is that I'm going to make due with this router for awhile, but I plan on looking for a new router sooner rather than later. I don't think I'll be a Netgear customer again either, with the way their customer service treated me.

I bought this from a local retailer in February. I had another Netgear Router that had been recommended by a friend that worked flawlessly for 5 years, and then started to not work so great. I figured it was just time to replace it - it gets used hard, and Netgear was no longer supporting the old router I had.I was told this was a comparable model to the one I was replacing. Set-up was easy and I was online quickly, but the good times were short lived. From day one, about 8 hours out of the box, it began dropping our connection. Sometimes once a day, sometimes every few hours. Sometimes it would come back on after a brief pause, and other times it would require me to pull the power and wait for a reset that way. It was frustrating, and I was told over and over by Netgear that it was my modem. I had my cable company come out and check, and told me there was nothing wrong with the modem or my line. Then I was told it was the cables I had. I replaced all of them. I finally gave up and resigned myself to the fact that this was normal. Two weeks ago it suddenly got worse. I contacted Netgear again, and I was told I was out of the warranty period (despite my complaining early on) and they wanted $75 for tech support. I refused. I got some e-mail support, but it was to update my firmware, however the directions they sent me did not match their own user interface that was on my computer. They were asking me to click on buttons and tabs that simply weren't there. While trying to update the firmware, Netgear downloaded "Netgear Genie" on my computer. Things went from worse to incredibly bad right then and there. I couldn't stay online for more than 5 minutes. It was perpetually asking me to login, and rejecting my password (yet it was shown right on the screen as my password). It kept saying that wifi was not working but couldn't tell me why. I finally gave up in complete and total frustration last night. I went to the store and bought a Belkin router. Setup was easy, and I was online in about 15 minutes. I haven't had one dropped signal since.I got another response from Netgear support asking me to do a plethora of things, and I responded back that they lost a longtime customer as I could no longer deal with the constant drops, and a google search of that router model yielded thousands of complaints identical to mine. I told them I bought a Belkin router and my Netgear days were done. Their response? Sorry you felt you had to do that. If we can be of further help, let us know. Gee...thanks. I blew $50 on a router that never worked right from day one, poor customer service from day one, and nothing but headaches.I never had an issue with poor signal in the house - I always had 5 bars - but if you can't stay connected, then what's the use? Also beware of the Netgear forums. As another reviewer noted, there's a guy that trawls the forums and responds to pretty much everything with terse replies and references to follow links on his sig line with little other help. He has "Netgear Fanatic" under his username. He's useless, and unfriendly.
