I recently went to target and tried the Sony Hz200 and the Panasonic fz 70 and canon SX 50 all next to each other Panasonic said it had a 300 times digital zoom but there 300 is the equal to canons 200 times digital zoom Sony had an eight hundred times zoom and it was much much further but everything looks like a Bigfoot in the woods. Also once a got home I took a picture with my 70-300 lens at 300mm and it is equal to 500mm on the canon sx50 not a big deal just fyi. I chose the canon SX 50 I think it took the best pictures not as easy to use as my Canon 40d or rebel and the pictures aren't as good but they are still decent and what we are all here for the 1200mm lens.

Wow.We bought this as a backup camera to my DSLR for a trip to Africa on safari. I maxed out at 300mm (on a DX camera so that actually equivalent to about 450mm) This camera has far more optical reach.I took some fantastic photos of the Full moon, and my wife also got some great shots at the full 50X optical zoom. The stabilization worked really well (or I'd never have got the moon shots)I have only owned a DSLR for a year, and bought it with this safari trip in mind, until then I have always just had point and shoot Canon power-shots, smaller the better, and been very happy. If this camera was available before I bought the DSLR, (and I'd known about it), I may never have bought the DSLR.Several people from the trip have gone out and bought this camera once they played with it on the trip.My wife and I took the same shot at the same time on one occasion, having printed both out side by side, - the DSLR is the better color photo, but it was close. - and had you never seen the DSLR version, you would be over the moon with the shot.Highly recommended.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 50x Wide-Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom I received mine yesterday and immediately started testing the long zoom. I LOVE THIS CAMERA!!!!!!!! Forget the reviews that say the 50X zoom is too long for a handheld camera. Forget all the people who say the pixel quality erodes at the full length of the telephoto. They must not know how to handle a camera. If you know how to properly stabilize a hand-held camera by making a little tripod with your arms, hands and head (elbows against your chest and forearms touching each other while your also stabilize it against head with your brow touching the eyepiece), the 50X zoom is miraculous! Even the digital zoom is good. I normally never use digital zoom, but I actually took one photo of a Japanese magnolia, hand held, at full optical +digital zoom and it was crystal clear and beautiful when I opened it up full size on my iMac screen. This camera is a nature photographer's or a street photographer's dream come true. It's like being able to take absolutely great photos through a pair of strong binoculars. I have yet to test it's capabilities in low light, but if you're looking for a truly excellent, snatch-and-grab, telephoto camera that can be at close hand on hikes or bike rides, this SX50 will wow you. Never again will I spot a hawk, a moose, or a whale in the near distance and wish I had been carrying my DSLR.

It has exceeded my expectations. Having owned the previous versions, I especially purchased it due to its Raw capabilities, but so far I haven't used the Raw that much. At this time it only seems to open in Canon Raw Processing, but not in my Photoshop. The camera appears to be more professional and rugged in appearance than the previous models. The 50x zoom is awesome and I've even used digital zoom with excellent results. Doing mostly wildlife photography, the camera meets my requirements of light weight in the field. The photo results easily compare with my Canon SLR's that lately, seem to remain home unused. ISO range has been improved, but the max lens opening has been reduced, however it hasn't appeared to make a difference since the image stabilization is so good. The ergonomics are improved and the camera is extremely easy to use in the field. I would recommend this camera to anyone wanting to do wildlife photography, on a limited budget, wanting good optics, lighter weight in equipment, and expecting more than 90% of his images to be as expected. I'll add to the review after taking many more pictures. After using this camera for the last few months, its even better than I expected.I'm now using a 32GB card as I' m now running off many more pictures, especially when I use the multiple shot scene mode, that I really enjoy using in the refuges. And as for moon shots, even with some digital Zoom, at 100X, the stabilization is so good that only one out of five shots is discarded. As you can tell, the camera has made photography even more fun. Those people that complain about a few things should read their manual more thoroughly. There's an awful lot in it about using this camera and it should be read if you wan't to get the best out of this camera.

If you looking for a great camera, this is the one. It has so many amazing features on it. Now am no professional but I can tell you, you will feel like one. I have done so much research on canon, I really did not have a lot of money to shell out but I wanted something close. Judging from doing so much research this camera has it all. Auto for those unsure, and so many options for the advance people. What was amazing was all the options and the feel.In the beginning of my journey I started out with the sx500 this was nice and compact, but I wanted something more. I like the fact of all the features and the zoom. In regards to the sx500 I returned it, the sx50 has so much more to offer without the price tag.Another thing is I had back surgery so there is no way I could carry all of the equipment around with me. I am able to do so much. Pictures are great and the video is great. I will admit I had to buy books to help me understands how to shoot and understanding what all the features can do.In conclusion if you looking for something close to professional for a great price this is for you. If you are new to photogrophy or just having a hobby this camera wil work. Another thing is I love shooting landscapes, wildlife and family. Recommendations get some books for beginners they really help. Read the the instructions they have so much to offer. For the money worth it.

It works well! The seller had really fast shipping (Ordered this around saturday or sunday and received it thursday). I like the features of the camera ill be looking forward to using it. All the parts that they had in the description came with it as expected. This camera has extremely good, long range shooting. It detects something as thin as the spider webs across a bird bath from a distance. I think it's great for people who are starting out in taking more professional looking photos or tutorials on youtube.

I already own a Panasonic FZ150, which I've been happy with, but I bought this one for its 2X greater zoom, and have not been disappointed. For someone who wants to keep busy at night, as well as during the day, right out of the box this makes an acceptable, extremely compact, but far less complicated and expensive, substitute for an afocal digiscoping set-up, and it is dependably better than the FZ150 plus normal (1.7X) teleconverter. Just fasten the SX50 to a table-top tripod securely, set it on a cold car hood outside, fold out the rotating LCD, and you're ready to shoot the Moon and larger planets, without worrying about a cool-down period, fiddling with complex multi-part equipment, or needing anything but the zoom to locate objects. (Do remember to use the self-timer.) For the Moon for example, on the right days of the month with a good sky, my SX50 will faithfully image all 5 significant craters inside Clavius, plus Rupes Recta (the Straight Wall) above it. My FZ150 could never do that, even with an Olympus TCon17 teleconverter attached - it simply lacked the resolving power. With a telescopic glass solar filter held in front of the lens (BE CAREFUL!), the camera can also image sunspots during the day. The rings of Saturn plus the bands and moons of Jupiter are a little more challenging, and may require the use of manual exposure mode, plus manual focus, plus the 2X or 4X digital teleconverter, but usable results can still be obtained with perseverance. Just thought I'd mention a pleasing aspect of this camera's extreme zoom range not emphasized in previous user reviews (most of which I agree with).

This is my first modern camera in quite some time. Needless to say it blew me away! I can sit on my porch and video or photograph the deer on the mountainside across the valley. Wow. This camera has a learning curve but once you read the manual a couple times everything makes sense. I like the manual is online since those teeny tiny books they usually are printed so small that it makes sense just to download the pdf and stick it on the smartphone to keep with me.Pros: Quick lens speedAuto focus works wellBattery life is goodOuter display flips aroundSelf time has lots of featuresSlow motion is nice featurevideo looks greatWide angle is surprisingly wideCons: Needs tripod or mono pod for best results at maximum zoom 200xlearning curve is high going from 7 year old three button pocket shooterlittle bigger than i am used to physicallyIn conclusion get a 32 gig card, 1 extra battery and a light tripod or stick to use with this camera. Take lots of shots and just sort out the best. My days of having the dark spot of what i wanted to photograph in the pictures are over. Now people can see what I saw even at a distance.

After nearly three years of use, I decided to sell my trusty Canon Powershot SX1 HS and buy the new Canon Powershot SX50 HS. Here's the difference.Pros (Where SX50 is better than the SX1)Better images. Outdoors the SX1 takes great shots under the perfect light conditions, the SX50 takes better shots under less perfect conditions.SX50 has more intuitive settings compared to the SX1. For example, in order to record HD videos in the SX1, you have to change the aspect ratio of the photo settings from 4:3 to widescreen. In the SX50, the video resolution and photo aspect ratio are independent of one another.Better image stabilization.Better LCD screen and EVF.Higher resolution shots. (12 MP vs 10MP).Longer zoom (50x vs 20x)Better low light shots. I had to buy and use a Canon Speedlight 270 EX to improve my night and indoor shots).More solid build.Lighter weight.Pros (found on both cameras)Ability to save images in RAW format. Only the SX1 and the SX50 could save in RAW. The rest, SX20, SX40, etc. could not do.Cons (Where SX1 was better than SX50)No remote control. The SX1 had a very useful remote that you can use to take shots with.No longer uses AA batteries. The AA batteries gave me a lot o flexibility should I run out of juice. I can simply go to any store, buy batteries and continue taking shots. Now I need to buy an extra battery for the SX50 (shop where I bought it ran out of batteries). At least I can use my AA Eneloop batteries for other uses like on my flash and on my wireless mouse. No lens hood, no USB cable, no AV cables included. In the SX1 box, all of these accessories were included. All you have in the box is the camera, battery, charger, CDs and manuals. With the exception of the remote, all the cons of the SX50 can easily be offset by buying the things that you want (lens hood, cables, etc.). And the features far outweigh the loss of the remote. Image quality by itself is worth the buy.

I use a camera in my profession, I previous had a Cannon PS5SX which was a good camera good clear pictures with great color balance easy to use software, and hence my next camara was a "cannon" also SX50HS, my first disappointment was the software it used the same easy to use software as previous however its now covered up with a fancy front and make many more steps to do what was once easy. The camera is junk I will be selling it and happy to sell for half price, horrible in balanced colors grainy photos, control are not as easy to use the rotating disk finger keeps slipping off, camera is also in balanced and not as easy to hold, lens is oversized, horrible downgrade and expensive mistake..

After my wife got my camera wet and ruined it taking pictures of my Grandson at the pool, I did a lot of research on camera's for a replacement. I have always purchased and have had good luck with Canon, so I researched and found the sx50 hs. It has almost all the features of a high end SLR at 1/4 the price. And the best part of this camera is it packs a 24-1200mm lens that remains attached to the camera. Unlike SLR' S that would require multiple lens' to cover these numbers, not to mention the extra expense of each. After receiving it and taking pictures, I will admit to you that this is one awesome camera. Probably one of the best investments that I have ever made, and purchasing it from Amazon saved me at least $85.00 over any other store. So in closing, I would recommend this awesome camera to the point and shooter or an experienced pro.

I fell in love with this camera--but was hesitant to buy it because I heard it didn't do well in 'low light'. I tried to get an answer as to what 'low light' was but never got an adequate one. I'm very much an amateur photographer--who has specific needs for zoom, and various lighting--taking photos of dogs in the show ring and in the field. Finally I bought the camera unsure as to whether I could keep it or not because of the 'low light' factor. This camera is WONDERFUL in all lighting that I have used it in. I've taken many photos in dim lighting and they are terrific. This camera makes me look like a great photographer--because the photos are extraordinary. I have just begun to know much about it--and have bascially just being doing point and click. I had an Olympus several years back that was huge--love the photos but the camera was huge. Then I went to a small Canon PowerShot for the size of the photos and just hated the quality of the photos. This camera is smaller than my Olympus--really nice looking camera and takes wonderful photos. I love it!

I wanted a "nice" camera that was easy to use and wouldn't break the bank. This camera takes great pictures! I especially wanted a camera that works well in low light since the cheap cameras I have now are terrible with that. We were able to take nice photos in front of the Christmas tree with only the tree lights on and they turned out great!
