I had a great Canon PowerShot sx170 that I dropped and broke on my last trip. I was going to order the Canon Sx260 HS to replace it but ordered this one instead. It was okay but I had a few issues that made me return this item. First of all, the camera shell is plastic and seemed cheaply made. I felt that an occasional bump might break the camera easily. Secondly, the lens cap was separate and manually operated. On my old sx170 the camera autoclosed the lens cap when you turn off the camera. Thirdly, the flash does not pop up automatically. This is a pain for me. I don't like the shape of the camera either, the lens is so big and sticks out so far that it could not easily fit in a pocket. I ordered the Canon sx260 to replace this one. I think I will be happier with it although the sx260 doesn't have wifi like this one. I want it primarily for traveling and so these missing features are more important to me.

This is a great camera., The 50 x zoom really is the same as a 24mm to 1200mm lens costing Mega bucks. Don't misanderstand, it's not the quality of the $$$ 24-1200mm lens but it does a very nice job. Word a caution: Don't expect to take pix or video at full zoom without a tripod or way to stabilize the camera. At full zoom you WILL see camera shake if the camera is not stabilized with a tripod of some other means to steady the shot. But for home video/stills, this camera does a great job. I have many rigs from Canon 5d Mark 2 down to GX1 but this unit fits the bill for casual walk about use. Highly recommend. Only one minor downside, you'll need to purchase a seperate filter "Adapter" if you want to use filters. Standard filters that screw onto the camera are NOT supported without the adapter.Update: I just purchased the filter adapter for the SX-50 that also comes with three filters, a soft rubber (?) hood etc that works just great. Kit also included a new lens cap that is necessary as the adapetr allows 58mm filters (etc) to be used. I now leave the included 58mm UV filter on the camera to protect the lens. The Accessory Kit for CANON PowerShot SX50 HS Digital Camera - Includes: 58MM Lens Adapter Ring + Vivitar Filter Kit (UV, CPL, FLD) + Carry PouchSold by Digital Goja. I bought this camera to save having to have both a Quality Camera and Quality HD Video. It does NOT fit the bill.Pictures are Awesome:The camera is awesome for picture quality, flexibility of format and the Zoom is fantastic. Love the 16:9 option, which is great for using in slideshow for panning of landscapes, plus it just looks natural on 16:9 TV. Camera is easy to use, battery life is excellent.NOW for what is just Ok... the Video:Video is crisp and clear but suffers from 24 frame jumpiness (when panning move Slow, or you will hate watching it) This also makes fast action video look jumpy.Bottom line I like the camera and will keep it but will not give up my Canon Vixia HFM300 for AVCHD 29 frame video.

I am a casual user of a camera for taking travel and everyday photos. I bought this to replace my Canon Sureshot which broke (when I dropped it). Camera arrived as described and easy to use. I am still trying it figure out how to upload photos via WiFi but is somewhat a time consuming project. Camera takes great photos and offers flexibility from automatic setting to manual settings. Telephoto /zoom lens has exceeded my expectations. I am happy with my choice in selecting this camera. My previous Canon camera was user friendly and this seems consistent. I will figure out the WiFi upload of photos but in the meantime I can use the cable from my other camera to import photos to my computer. I recommend this camera for its price point, quality of photos, size, and flexibility of features.

When my older digital SLR required expensive repairs, I decided to go to this sophisticated point-and-shoot because it was only slightly more than the cost of repairing the old camera. Further, I'm past the point of needing the control offered by an SLR, and wanted something ideal for traveling. This one sure fits the bill, as it offers everything a relatively sophisticated (but non-pro) vacation traveler could want—especially the impressive zoom. This was my first experience with Canon—my prior cameras have been Nikon and Minolta—so it's possible that my relatively slow learning curse was simply because I"m new to the Canon world. But I did find the camera a little less than fully intuitive to operate. But once learned, the little beast has an awful lot to recommend it. In fully auto mode, the camera selects among the preprogrammed modes pretty much flawlessly, and the lens (and hence image quality) is remarkably fine for such a low price. In fact, a colleague with an extremely expensive Canon SLR was a little miffed that my image quality rivaled what he could achieve with an $1200 telephoto lens.BTW, Amazon price was substantially better than my local camera shops. My local guy was pretty shocked in fact, saying that the Amazon consumer price was better than what he was buying the camera for at wholesale.Only down side is that the image stabilization features are a little awkward to use at first. And the printed "getting started" manual is so skimpy that it's almost useless. PDF version of the full manual is pretty poorly organized, as well. That's the only thing that deduct a star from my assessment, though.

I'm an amateur with cameras, have had this camera about a month and am still learning much about it, and I'm largely comparing it with a Canon S3IS that I'm upgrading from. So put this all in context. As with many others, I bought this camera primarily for the zoom. I use it mostly outdoors while on bird-watching ventures. Up through the end of the optical range (50x), I've been quite pleased with the picture quality. Digital zooms have always been gimmicks and they're no different with this camera. The digital range goes from 50x to 100x and the picture quality in that range is so poor it isn't worth using. That said, it's impressive what you can get through the optical range with this point and shoot. The biggest issue I've had outdoors with the zoom in program mode is getting it to focus on the right thing when there are multiple objects at different depths in the field of view. This isn't new to this camera but is an ongoing one I have with point and shoot cameras. Assuming you are able to get your object in focus, the focus-lock feature on this camera is useful in maintaining it. I give the zoom a B+.Though I didn't get the camera for movie purposes, they've been a very pleasant surprise. The HD movies you're able to get, even at the high end of the zoom range, are simply fantastic whether you're viewing them on your computer or your large flatscreen TV. Sound capture with the movies is quite good as well. I give the movie feature an A.Image stabilization on the camera is excellent. I've taken quite a few pictures in very windy conditions and, even at the high end of the optical zoom, I don't notice any degradation of image quality compared with conditions with no wind.My knocks on the camera would include the array of buttons on the back. I continue to inadvertently turn on the self-timer feature in the midst of shooting. Finally, though I love the zoom and movie features, I'm a bit disappointed in the overall crispness of pictures. I was expecting a just a bit more, and I agree with others that the camera doesn't function well without very full light.Overall, a solid B+. If it's zoom you want, you'll be hard-pressed to find this amount and quality for a similar price.

I'm not a professional photographer. I simply like taking pictures and storing them on the computer. My previous camera was a Kodak Easyshare about eight years old, so this was a big step up in technology. Maybe most important, the pictures are very high resolution, clear, with excellent color. I haven't had the camera very long, so most of the pictures have been taken on "auto" or the sports setting. They're beautiful. The camera has a 50x zoom, and you need to be well-braced or use a tripod to keep the camera steady. If you do that, you get great pictures over a very long distance. The camera has a huge assortment of settings and features. It takes a lot of time to acquaint yourself with them, and there's no manual. You have to get it on-line and there are too many pages to print. A manual would have been a huge plus.If it's been a long time since you changed cameras, here's something you might keep in mind: I always used my all-in-one printer as the vehicle for getting my SD card read into my computer. It wouldn't do it with my new camera. At first I thought it might be the camera. Then I thought it might be the SD card. Then I read that my OS (XP) might not read the newer type of SD card. I ultimately found that it was the printer that couldn't read it. I put the SD card in an SD card reader and popped it into a USB port and it worked fine.Overall, I really like this camera. It's heavy enough to have some substance without being too heavy to handle. If you're going to use the 50x zoom (and why wouldn't you?) you should invest in a tripod.

I was so anxious to receive this camera, only to be completely disappointed. I have a Canon PowerShot SX260 HS, and I took pictures side by side and compared the two. The Canon PowerShot SX260 HS took much better photos. The SX 510 had too much noise. Even in the lower ISO setting. Maybe i didn't set it up right, i don't know. All i know is that my Canon PowerShot SX260 HS was alot better, and I've never had to do anything to it but just "Point and Shoot". The SX 510 had blurry photos indoors. It just wasn't right. I wish i was one of those people that got the good camera. Maybe it was a lemon. Don't know. I sure don't feel like giving it another shot. =(

I bought the Canon PowerShot SX20 IS, the forerunner to this one, to take on an Africa photo safari about 4 years ago. Terrific results!! It has a 20x optical lens, and for several long range shots I used the digital magnification out to 50x without running into grainy photos. It uses AA batteries which proved essential when the batteries needed to be changed "out in the bush."Was thinking I'd upgrade to this one, but reading up on the specs leads me to conclude that Canon has taken two big backward steps: this one has no viewfinder which is critical to finding and photographing the lion at 800 yards! And going to a rechargeable battery vs AA batteries was the wrong thing to do with this type of camera. Yes, you could buy a spare rechargeable battery, but I had total confidence in carrying two sets of fresh AA batteries into the bush. I'll stick with my SX20.

I am a Canon fanatic, I have owned a great deal of their cameras over the years. More recently mostly DSLR's. I primarily use a Canon T3i for pictures and video. I recently decided that I would like to purchase a camera capable of capturing great video with the ability to self focus, I did not want to upgrade to the t4i as my t3i is still fairly new. I did a lot of research on this camera and thought I would give it a try. I love that the camera has the option to shoot in Raw, this will be a great feature for anyone trying change from point and shoot to DSLR, Raw files are much easier to work with and edit. The flash is clunky on this camera and the flash button on the side is useless until you manually raise the flash, you would think that pressing the button would automatically raise the flash, but this is not the case. Indoor shooting in low light is at the very low end of sub par, and a little over exposed when the flash is on. Moving subjects are blurry indoors and there quite a bit of noise in the pictures. It does however produce very incredible almost DSLR quality pictures with good lighting. On to indoor video, the main reason for the purchase. Low light video looks incredible while you are recording and looking at the tiny LCD you believe you are capturing nothing short of a masterpiece HD video, until you watch it on a larger screen and notice the all the grainy blur. I suspect the reason for this is the low aperture range which does not allow for much light to enter the camera. When you are panned all the way out this is not such an issue, but begin to zoom in on a subject and they become very dark. I will be returning this and purchasing a actual camcorder since that was the main reason for the purchase, I just really hoped this would eliminate having to take 2 separate cameras and a bunch of lenses when I travel, I believe Canon is getting closer to bridging the two, but there is still a long way to go. This is not a bad camera, but simply does not meet my needs. I believe if you are primarily going to use this product outside on well lit days you will be pleased, but if your trying to capture low light images or video you need to look elsewhere.

This has to be the worst experience I have had with Amazon. I ordered this camera - and before I even received it (2 day shipping) I got an email that told me it was defective. I now need to return it to Canon so they can fix it - and this of course will be at my time and expense. Who knows when I will get it back. Really disappointed with you Amazon and Canon - not impressed at all. Haven't even had the chance to try the darned thing. Here is some of the text from the recall for others to see:The rubber part of the viewfinder on some PowerShot SX50 HS compact digital cameras produced in certain lots from September 1 through November 15, 2013 may turn white after a short period of time. The wifi on this camera does not work with the current OS X 10.9 (Maverick) operating system on your computer! Would have been really nice to know that before we spent money on a camera that does not come with a cord for plug in uploading. Our house has 2 Apple notebooks and one iMac laptop and home wifi, but we can't upload our pics. It seems to take good pics, but the test will be if/when we can upload and see the enlarged pics on a computer. Very frustrating! Canon customer service tells me that the camera will upload to iPhones and iPads, but I keep my pics on my computer. They also say it will be an estimated 4 months before Canon will get their software updated to Maverick.Update: I found a cable that fit and uploaded the first 66 pics we took over Thanksgiving. Posed, still shots look great. Candid shots are blurry. And we are not novice photographers. My last two cameras have been Panasonic Lumix which were great... for awhile, then began losing sharp focus. We purchased this camera after reading a lot of reviews online, and because our daughter has an amazing Canon PowerShot (but has very little zoom). We thought we'd found the perfect camera. But we are sadly disappointed with this camera purchase!

Canon is out for only the almighty buck and tries to screw its customers to make a few extra shillings - here's the evidence:A few days over a year after we bought this camera, it was on a tripod and blown over by a gust of wind. It fell on the grass lens-first and would not power on thereafter. We took it to a local, highly-reputable camera repair where they quickly diagnosed that the "lens gear assembly" was jammed and needed to be replaced, a simple matter for them to do EXCEPT that Canon refused to sell them the replacement part (at any price) and told them we had to send the camera (at our expense of $18 including insurance) to the Factory Service Center for "refurbishment".We did as instructed and received an email telling us the camera could not be repaired and that Canon would sell us a refurbished model for $350. The brand new camera is available now on this site for $325. I called to ask if the pricing information was correct that a used camera was being offered to us at higher price than I could pay for a brand new one - the answer was yes, that's how it is.Needless to say, we are looking for non-Canon replacement options and this will be the last Canon product we have ever owned.

Haven't exactly got it all figured out yet, they put way too much stuff in there. A lot of functions and adjustments that 90% of photographers will never use. But, that's true of just about all cameras these days. I got about everything I was looking for. Wanted super zoom (got that). Wanted good resolution, image quality and focus at high zoom settings (got that). Wanted these features without the expense of a high quality SLR and a long telephoto lens (got that). However, Canon should have known that the arrangement and locations of the various buttons are inconvenietly located. Also they are so sensitive to the touch that it's difficult to handle the camera without activating some unintended function.

Let me start by saying that you are buying this camera for the zoom, plain and simple. The 50X zoom is incredible. You can get a lot of shots that are impossible with other point and shoot cameras. The quality at full zoom is excellent. You can get detailed pictures of objects that you normally couldn't with other point and shoot cameras. The image quality remains good even when you throw in the digital zoom although it starts to deteriorate after you get past 100x.A lot of users have complained that the SX50 does not take good pictures in low light. This is true to some degree. When the camera is set in automatic mode it tends to take dark grainy pictures. It often sets a high ISO and a low shutter speed. This is a especially problematic if you are taking pictures of moving objects. I have found that if you set the camera on manual and adjust the settings to your liking you can take significantly better pictures than the auto mode. This however does not need to be done in better lighting situations as the cameras auto mode works much better than in low light ones.I do recommend that if you intend to use this camera indoors that you invest in an external flash that allows you to bounce the light off the ceiling to get better quality pictures. Again if you are taking the pictures in an outdoor environment the camera performs wonderfully. For those of you that are looking to take wildlife pics you wont be disapointed. How else could you get great closeups of wildlife without having to move close enough to scare them off?I have had no problems with the speed of the zoom and the time it takes to focus on your target. Sometimes it requires you to take your hand off the button and let the camera refucus but that usually only happens in low light situations and at extreme zooms. I have also been able to take a number of close up macro style photos of various objects while blurring the background for that proffesional look.I had to drop off 1 star for the lack of quality of the auto mode in lower light situations but again you can remedy this with a flash or going into manual mode. Other than that this is a great camera especially for those landscape and wildlife photos that most people looking for a 50x zoom are expecting.

m19Q8I5W4YD1T / mo9O4WT4N76ZW9 Length:: 2:08 MinsUnfortunately, Amazon's max. video capacity is 100MB, SO...to see the real quality of my camera's zoom power in HD, see:[...]An interesting point about the digital zoom is that the video has much better resolution at 51-200x than still photos. The image stabilization is also a great help when taking photos at high zoom. While the zoom is unbeatable for a camera in this class, there are other features that could be improved upon. The macro focus distance is rather far in comparison with other point and shoot cameras. It didn't come close to the really up-close focusing of my old Olympus. Also, it is lacking a built in panorama mode. Panorama photos must be montaged using the software provided with the camera. My only other disappointment was that the Sport Scene mode and the high burst shooting modes make the screen go black while shooting each pic. This means that you are unable to follow your fast moving subject, thus negating the function. How are you supposed to follow a fast moving object if your viewfinder goes black with each shot?Other than these minor qualms, the SX 50 takes some stunning photos especially from far away!I would recommend this camera to anyone who doesn't want the hassle of a DSLR but still wants high quality photos.

The answer is "Yes, it is!"It did take about a week and a half to get our replacement camera directly from Canon.

1 month, 550 shots later having read the manual cover to cover (English section ;)Unless you NEEEEEEED to shoot very long exposures, this is simply an unreal camera. I owned a pro photo lab for 30 years and could only dream of a lab IN a camera!!! This does more than I ever thought....I'm coming from a 6 year old X1, but owned the very best film cameras from 35mm to 4x5. I no longer want the weight nor complexity of a full pro SLR (my wife uses an assortment of canons with a 6 month old 7D loaded ($3500 10,000 RPM IS zoom and and and...before and "better" than ultrasonic) as her business camera (PR, aerials etc.) and I certainly have access to these body/lens assortments. I trained her to use them. I'm also a PS pro, to mention just a few things.I see no reason to buy any other system unless you have an ego and pocketbook to match.I have macro shots 1.5 inches from the object that I could not replicate any better with bellows (yeah some of you might know them ;) And other close shots. The manual focus just works. No "auto" system does it all for you...like governments! You work with limitations and MUST both READ the manual AND experiment. I learned in the 1960s and to me this is unreal. Yes, I might be an anachronism as a being, but I am a computer consultant and imaging specialist who is quite current. It is not the perfect color balance in all situations; how many cameras are. The 7D does that with aplomb, but if you need that, get the 7D. I was able to neutralize the color manually, but that takes time, for me a few moments. In most cases it was either dead on or very good. Fix it in Aperture or PS on most difficult shots. The location of some controls has been an issue and I literally walked around the house for days holding it testing to make sure I can handle it in the field. Never go live with untested equipment. You will probably blow the shots. In the end, to give a huge flip out viewer they had to fit the wheel in a tight space on the back, close to the butt of your hand. By practice it has become a none issue.More important items are how to chose the best auto focus and white balance. There are many choices well beyond the very good "auto". Practice, or get a simple point & shoot and stop writing stupid reviews.

Within the first week you own this camera you will take a picture of the moon. You'll show your friend and tell them you took the picture with your camera, handheld, with no tripod, and you'll all be staring in disbelief. At least one of your friends will buy the camera as a result.Superzoom - that's what this camera is all about. It's a high end point and shoot for people who do not quite want an SLR. I have use this to shoot high school football and I can capture up-close shots of the action from high in the stands. The lens is slow for night shooting at games, but the high ISO is very good and the image stabilization helps a bunch. Picture under stadium lights of the team in the huddle are perfect and sharp, action pictures are hit and miss. It exceeds my expectations for this price and technology. Keep in mind a HS football game is not as well lit as a professional stadium, so this is a pretty difficult shooting environment.I will also use it to shoot auto racing and wildlife where the zoom will be utilized and it will generally be daylight, so I expect excellent results.I've been using the Canon S1,3,5 line of cameras for many years and I like the image quality and controls of Canon cameras. I took this upgrade for the zoom, but I also like that the high ISO shooting is greatly improved over my S5.

I do not shoot photos often. But when I do during travel and vacation times, I take lots of pictures of all varieties--from wide angle to long-distance telephotos, under all kinds of conditions.I have been impressed by how much faster this camera is as compared to Canon's earlier SX35, which I have used for several years. I have not yet spent the time I should reading the owner's manual. But most of the settings are intuitive and the results are almost always satisfying enough to impress most who see the images the camera generates. In the past I often missed photo-opportunities with my Canon SLR digital camera due to changing lenses and recalling how the thing worked. Now the only shots I miss are due to the brief time-lapse needed between shots to write the image to the SD card.

Don't get me wrong. I am not maven when it comes to cameras. I have several and rejected Canon a few years back because I thought it was for experts and have a huge learning curve. Well, I was wrong! I have a 25X Panasonic SLR and the zoom of this 30x cannot compare with the 25X. Even without doing a full Zoom the Canon has such a greater capable ZOOM it is amazing. At 30X full out it is like having a telescopic lens! The controls are easy. I am learning the ones I'm going to use (limited for the camera fan but my brain won't hold all the settings) ALSO, this camera besides outdoing my Panasonic SLR 25X is 1/2 the weight! I got a harness for the SLR but with this little Canon Gem I don't need it because it isn't any heavier than a point and shoot but so much more capable.I think I agree with the reviewer that said the aftermarket batteries last longer than the Canon batteries that came with the camera. I bought the set, also because I don't want to miss a shot.Hurray! am I a happy camper with this camera.

It won't work with internet, it won't work to simply connect it up with a computer. I have no way of getting to any of my pictures to print them. Seriously. I'm so sorry I bought this thing. If someone has advice, I'd love to know it. Customer service is about to get a phone call from us and an ear full. I hope we can return it. I really don't think it should be that hard to save and print pictures from your computer. I'm not trying anything fancy here, folks. Terrible, terrible.

I am a photographer...and will admit that due to the film going away to digital I have not had the love for it that I had when I first got into to....I do still love my Minolta 35mm (although it is put away as no one seems to know how to print from film any more) and I love my Sony digital that I use professionally....that said...this camera has made me fall in love with photography all over again....the first few days I just could not put it down....and now I am anxious to get out and see what I can shoot! Thanks Canon for restoring my love of photography! The camera is also light weight, which is awesome for someone like me who has been dealing with pain issues.
