Needed a memory card which was not included - should have stated in the order. Now I need to purchase one before I can use the camera. Also, I agree with those who are critical of Canon and the instruction "manual'! I finally got Canon to post a pdf of the "manual" and it needs a simplified version!!

I purchased the Canon sx40hs last year, and was very pleased with the image quality. However, I was frustrated by the auto focus, which would tend to be sluggish at times, and lost at others. Also, the resolution of the lcd screen was relatively low. So, I purchased the Sony hx200v, another prime contender in the superzoom class, because of its good reviews about the speed and accuracy of its auto focus, as well as its super high resolution screen. I was disappointed, however, despite the Sony's superiority in these areas, along with its gps for geotagging that the Canon doesn't have, because the image quality of the Sony wasn't nearly as good as the Canon! Even though the Sony has 18 megapixles compared to 12 on the same size sensor on the Canon, this is the Achilles heel of the hx200v. There is much more detail in the pictures from the Canon than the Sony, due to the detrimental effects of the aggressive noise reduction necessary for Sony's pixel packed chip. There was too much smudging of details in the Sony's pictures, even at low ISO. Very disappointed! So, after selling the Canon sx40hs to buy the Sony hx200v, I have settled on the Canon sx50hs, and I'm very happy with this improved Canon superzoom. The 50x optical zoom is unsurpassed in its class, the autofocus is significantly better than its predecessor, and the screen resolution is higher now, too. Plus, it shoots in RAW format, in addition to jpeg, and has HDR as well. And the image quality is beautiful, much better than the Sony, which unfortunately, due to all those pixels on such a small chip, tend to look smudgy, flat and fake. More is definitely less in this instance. Canon uses the Digic 5 image processor in this camera, the same chip they put in their high end dslrs. Benefit from my experience here, and get the Canon sx50hs! You will be very happy with it.

I was a little disappointed that it did not come with a memory card or an instruction manual. I believe for the price those should have been items to be included. With that being said, I love the camera. My mom and I were driving the other day and I just pointed at passing cars and the clarity and crispness of the shot was amazing. I also took a picture of a star and the clarity of that without the flash was incredible. I would definitely recommend this camera for first time photographers.

Zoom is amazing and photo quality is good. Quality is not very Crisp indoors but Great quality outdoors. Battery is good. i would recommend buying a tripod and a couple of spare batteries for trips.

After replacing my old Canon with this one, which I expected to be similar to the SX500, I was amazed at the improvement. Very good zoom, and takes great pics in any light. Just wish these ( and all) cameras came with instruction books! Still can't figure out some basic functions, such a how to change pixel size..

I PURCHASED THIS AS AN UPGRADE FROM MY CANNON POWERSHOT BECAUSE I WANTED A MORE PROFESSIONAL MODEL FOR MY PICTURE TAKING. I HAVE NOT USED IT EXTENSIVELY ENOUGH TO GIVE ANY CONS YET BUT EXPECT TO DURING THE SUMMER WHEN TRAVELING. I WILL UPDATE THIS RATING IF ANYTHING SIGNIFICANTLY BAD IS DISCOVERED. SOME PROS ARE IS THAT IT IS LIGHT, VERY LIGHT WEIGHT. IT DOES A WONDERFUL JOB WITH THE 30X + ZOOM. I HAVE TO LEARN TO USE THE OTHER MODES FOR VARIOUS LIGHTING, ETC. HOWEVER, IF THAT DOESN'T WORK OUT...AUTO IS ALWAYS THE BEST TO USE. THE CAMERA IS AS DESCRIBED, NEW AND, WAS DELIVERED INTACT IN PROTECTION PACKAGING AND IN WORKING CONDITION.

I have always used simple point and shoot cameras. My last vacation I was extremely disappointed with my current point and shoot. Mainly because of the inability to take a decent night shots and even with 10x zoom the animals were just too far away.After months of research I bought this camera.In the beginning I was not able to take decent pictures with it and started to think I bought the wrong camera. After a little googling I realized hey I am a newbie and know nothing about cameras! As long as your willing to learn a little about photography this camera is a really good pick. At 50x zoom it still take very clear pictures. I am really impressed with the quality of the images now that I have more of a grasp on how to use the camera.

It is easy to use, takes super shots, and is priced so reasonably. Had the cannon point and shoot before and this is just as easy and the quality of photos are substantially different. They look professional. Bought for a trip out west; can't wait to see these photos when we return!

I have five point and shoot cameras. this one is by far the best ever.I had a stupid time recharging the battery , as I had the camera so long, I could not find the charger. I thought it looked like my phone and kindle charger. by the time I was nearly exasperatedI found the right charger and now all is right with the world.I love this camera. not too complicated and great pictures. I bought this camera as a Christmas gift for my wife and we both love it to death. We actually fight over it! This is the first camera either on of us has owned that was not a typical point and shoot. This thing takes awesome pictures and is mind blowing with the 200x max zoom. There are so many features available on this camera. I won't list them in this review. I have gotten myself very familiar with this camera and I love what it is capable of. My only gripe is the somewhat lower quality when taking pictures in really low light.

My daughter and her husband got this camera when the had their first baby this past summer. I was so impressed with it so I ordered one too. The zoom and clarity it amazing. I have no complaints with the camera--but amazon advertised it including a 16gb CD card and when I received it there was no card. Another customer complained about the same thing. I contacted amazon and they said it didn't come with one when it clearly stated what would be in the box. I have to travel an hour to town and back to get this package and got home and no card so no using it this evening. Had I known I would have gotten a card in town. I thought amazon would have at least credited my account.

What I can say is this camera was my saving grace on a recent vacation; I usually shoot with a Sony A77 but it was out for service and not coming back in time as planned. So this was my only option given the circumstances. When you fine tune the settings the images come out very good. Its light weight and I used it most like a SLR with the viewfinder instead of the LCD screen. Plenty of options for those who like to manually make adjustments and easy to carry around. I cant get too deep into the specifics of this camera other than saved the vacation and I walked away with very nice pictures. Great camera but I did have some initial problems. I love Canon cameras and have always had Canon. This one that I received was slightly defective. There was an issue with the white balance going from outside daylight to indoors. The display would not change and the screen looked whitewashed. I also notice that when I took a picture of something that was perfectly clear in the display, the actual was coming out a little blurry. This was mostly on far away shots. I returned my camera but am strongly considering getting another one just like it. I may have just gotten a bad one which is always a possibility with electronics. I have the SX20IS right now and was upgrading. The SX50 is still a new Camera and maybe they don't have all the bugs worked out yet.

I was so excited for this camera. I followed the instructions in the book to go to canon.com/cig to set up a gateway account. From there it had me register the product (first option). Turns out you need to set up a gateway account before registering the product (link at the bottom of the page, as opposed to the top "register your product"). If you register your product first, you can never link it to the gateway account, rendering the camera wifi sharing options useless. I called customer service who said there was no way around it, and to change the serial numbers on my gateway account to fudge the system to make it work. I asked if this would then ruin someone else's set-up, but they said "we just want you to change one number." It made no sense, and I feel uncomfortable registering incorrect serial numbers to make a system work.So, brutal set-up required, and then shady customer service from the Canon phone support. I'm returning it and won't be buying another Canon.

I have a DSLR, but wanted a camera to take hiking or on travel where I could take a variety of shots without lugging around several lenses. After much research, I setted on the SX50. It received rave reviews in most places that I researched and were recommended over some newer, more expensive models.Experiences so far:Outdoors:Outdoors in takes very crisp, clear pictures with excellent color tone. The 50x zoom is amazing and has assisted getting some good wildlife shots.Indoors:I was worried as there are a couple of reviews here and there that complain about indoor conditions. I, however, have been very surprised and pleased with the quality. I have also heard that this could vary by camera. A coworker also bought this model and his indoor/lowlight shots were so bad that he returned it. When I showed him mine he was amazed it was even the same camera. I even recently took this camera on a trip to NY and took shots with no flash in a museum where the only light was the exhibits and the rest of the room was dark and they came out very well.All in all, I can't recommend this camera enough. In the superzoom class it is a great camera at a great value.

I bought this camera for the zoom. It takes amazing outdoor photos; birds, insects, animals and more. Even photos of the moon. This is what I bought it for and am quite pleased with the high quality images I have gotten. I have MS and deal with bad tremors which can make taking a centered image/clarity challenging. With this camera I rarely get blurry pics from unsteady hands.Pros:quick turn on/start up time (is ready to shoot pretty quickly)good time Auto focusvery good image stabilizationrechargable batteryexcellent image quality and zoomeasy to useVideo quality is goodCons:Low light photos/video with & without flash are not up to the quality I would expect from Canon..i.e. noise at anything over iso 600.Over ISO 800 is often quite grainy.Likewise with the zoom...anything over 800mm(60-75x) can be soft-edged (mild noise) and the higher you get to 100x zoom or (1200mm) the greater the noise.These are the ONLY 2 reasons I did not give this camera 5 stars. (my panasonic lumix tz8 was much worse that the Canon sx50)There has not been a single time I've regretted buying this camera. It is well worth the money. I cannot afford a DLSR and this camera is a perfect compromise.

Without a viewfinder, it is hard to take photos in the bright sun. I just got it, so I'm no expert yet, but one thing is that the battery/card compartment has an unlock button that is not really easy to open. New style, I guess. It is good that it has a lens cap rather than the iris opening because they eventually stop opening and closing, or get stuck in between. The photos I have taken are ok so far.

Great camera. Easy to use and does well with both stills and video. I have only 2 complaints. First, why did Canon not include the $5 USB cord with this camera? And 2nd, why was Canon so cheap and put a bayonet mount on the lens instead of the normal thread on for filters? All filters have threads, so why would you NOT put threads on the lens? Just plain stupid.

decent all purpose light camera, images good to iso 800, images deterioriate beyond this, NOT the equal of a DX format camera but much lighter and smaller, very good stabilization considering long reach. slow auto focus and not very good tracking, slow aquisition between individual shots

I love my camera and I'm really sad the screen randomly went out. Everything else works and I take good care of the camera so I'm not sure what happened, but Amazon is sending a replacement in a few days which I am very happy about. No hassle, no fee or anything. Hopefully this one works fine

I bought this camera for a vacation. It performed easily with beautiful pictures. The zoom lens gave us clear pictures with more detail then you can see on the screen. We transferred the pictures to our computer and watched the slide show of amazing pictures. The battery lasted several days without running low so I just recharged it overnight so it was ready to go. I am so glad I chose this camera. Love it.

I've only been using this camera for 4 days, but it's already apparent that it's a wonderful camera. It has the ability to do so much. It's so different from the 3 Kodak digital cameras I had that I needed to print the manual. Canon furnishes the manual on a CD ... not handy enough for me. It was 285 pages long. I'm wandering through the manual and trying things as I progress. This camera takes excellent photos. And, the image stabilization is unbelievable to a former Kodak user. The Kodaks were good, but this camera is way beyond good. I took pictures at 50X optical and 150X (optical plus 3X digital) ... handheld and on a cloudy day. They are unbelievable, crisp colors and no camera shake. It's going to be a big learning curve for me, and I'm going to enjoy every minute.

This little bridge camera is terrific and shoots raw as well. One word for you Elements users. Raw images will not upload into my Elements 10 without a Digital Negative Converter. Perhaps that is corrected with Elements 12. The range on the zoom is wonderful.

This camera is Awesome!!! Take excellent pictures and videos. One draw back though...when recording in 1080HD it only records for a minute and 15 seconds. You get much more when you switch it to 720HD or standard recording.

This is a pretty cool camera. It has a bunch of great features and so far the pictures I've taken have come out really good. I like the fold out screen, it also tilts but i haven't really used the tilt too much yet. It's comfortable to hold, pretty quick at snapping pictures and easy to use.

My work is the development of large to very large steel structures that are dangerous to climb and build. As with any large construction project, many pictures are taken during the construction and inspection process to measure progress, capture and study problem areas and verify inspections for record keeping. Since climbing to significant heights is dangerous for all, it should be left to trained and skilled Iron Workers. So, how do you get closeup pictures of small construction details in difficult to reach, high elevation locations? The answer is the superzoom camera. I used to use an older, 12:1 zoom, 5mp camera and it was great, but compared to that, the SX50 HS is fantastic! Since it has a 50:1 Optical zoom combined with an additional 4:1 digital zoom and 12.1mp, it is possible to get up to 200:1 magnification. With this, I can read small hand writing on an inspection point in a structure at over 100 feet away, and any other details I want, all while staying safe on the ground or a secure platform. I recently returned from an study mission of the new, giant Gatun Locks under construction at the Panama Canal. The excavation is for the new super locks for the giant Post-Panamex freighter ships is about 200 feet deep and a mile long. With this camera, I was able to zoom in on workers and concrete work at 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile away, and record recognizble faces of workers and details of construction. The image stabilization is so good that if you hold yourself very steady, you can actually do this without a tripod, for both still images and HD videos. These are features that are not at all visible to the naked eye from that distance. I could then zoom out further and see the ships lined up miles out in the Pacific waiting for their turn to transit the canal. I studied all kinds of cameras before buying this one, and I am very glad I bought it. Zoom over to your computer and order one!

I had used the Canon Powershot SX40 before deciding the extra zoom on the SX50 would be nice for birding. Some of the buttons had been moved but overall the usage was the same. A pixal rating above 12mp would have been better but the RAW pictures are awesome. I had always shot using JPEG until giving it a try with the SX50. Why did I wait so long? Detail, color and clarity is far beyond the JPEG photos. Software to work with the RAW images comes with the camera. I recommend using RAW for your best photos. Get a high capacity card and you won't have to worry about running out of storage space.The software will convert the RAW image to TIFF to use with Photoshop. The included software allows some capability to work with the photo but not as Photoshop or Photoshop Elements so this is a nice choice to have.The SX40 produced good photos and the SX50 does as well. Powerup is very fast. Color is very good and there are many options for different situations in lighting and environment to help get the best shot. I'm very happy with this camera for the class it is in. You can get better but the alternative is much more expensive.

I have two dslr but bought the SX50 as a grab and go camera and as a camera for times when I don't want to carry all of the dslr stuff. Also the great tele zoom gives a range that would be extremely costly in a dslr lens. I find the SX50 take great pictures-far better than the Nikon Coolpix 500/510 both of which I returned. My one warning is that you cannot be sloppy with your technique and need to learn to hold the camera steady even with its image stabilization. As most camera companies do today, the manual comes on a disc and can be obtained as a pdf download, however, an email to Canon customer service got a one time only hard copy! Its large-too large for a typical camera bag-but it is one that those of us that like old fashioned hard copies can use in the comfort of our easy chairs!

I checked several reviews for several cameras before deciding on the Canon PowerShot SX510 HS. The camera and reviews are a disappointment. The instructions for the camera are not written well and a bit difficult to understand. I have many devices connected to my wifi but can't get the camera to connect. Luckily I have a card reader to pull the images from the camera. The images are OK but look more like they came from an inexpensive point and shoot. I had also looked at a Fuji that had good reviews and am now regretting the decision to go with the Canon. I had a Fuji point and shoot many years ago and liked the images; should have stuck with what I know !!

Nice, light camera for travel. I love the HDR feature on this camera, but it requires a tripod to take a really clear picture. Also, it does not respond quite as fast as I am used to on my DSLR. Good battery life; no need to purchase spares.

The main purpose of me buying another camera is to take pictures of the wild animals in my backyard. I have a huge backyard, and many visitors come over on a daily basis. My old camera can take pictures if they are close enough, but I need a zoom more than x10 when they are afraid of human.This new camera has 30x zoom which is more than what I need, and pictures taken are very clear. My hands are not very strong, it's the camera eliminating the shaking.It's very neat, looks cute, made in China, good quality, awesome price.

The SX 30 that I bought about a year ago was lost due to " @#@@^* "..on my part. It performed well especially in low light situations. This SX50 HS is even better. When I hold it steady enough, even with the long lens it performs I suspect equally with DSLR's ? There is in fact a comparison on the Internet of a Point and Shoot and a DSLR and they are hard to decipher which is which.I shoot for the effect of an image not the technical excellence so there isn't much reason to say how good it is technically. From all the tests it has it's limitation but so does a 5 pound 10 inch by 10 inch SDLR or an 11 x 14 View camera. It compliments my attempts to be a Creative Photographer. In low light, long shots, animal photography scenic back lit and on and on. I am very pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone.There are a few things that I believe could be an improvement, which I have already made. The various buttons are to smooth and difficult to find when you in a hurry so I have put a dot of "Goop" on each so that I can feel them in the dark. It works very well.The rubber used on the viewfinder Eye pice is too hard so I will be replacing that with some High-density foam and possibly an Eyecup.It's easy to use quickly once you become accustom to it. I wear it around my neck pretty much all the time and have take some fairly good photos because it's there and because as I become more familiar it can be used more effectively for those quick shots. I will be submitting some photos to someone to give my example of the type that it can take.Once again I would recommend it to all people even the people who believe they need an expensive DSKR to shoot good photos. Remember it's the photographer not the camera that makes great pictures.X X X X X X X X X X X X

Bought this camera for my wife cause our old point and shoot finally died. She wanted another basic point and shoot and I wanted an SLR, so we compromised and got this one. We have already took many pics and many videos. The HD videos look great for what it is and the pics are great too. The WiFi feature is easy to connect and the software that you can download from the Canon website makes it a breeze.

I am still learning to use this, but it is a wonderful machine. The 'reach' on the zoom lens is just unbelievable. There are many pictures available around the net of the moon taken with the sx50, and it fills most of the frame. I have photos of squirrels up in trees, and with the wide-angle look, you cannot see them at all. Zoomed in, you can fill the frame with the head and shoulders alone.If you want to equal this with a dslr, be prepared to spend at least 10 times the price. Would the pictures be better?
