After reading other reviews, I decided that this was the way to go. The versatility alone is incredible, and I'm just getting started. Takes a beautiful picture with the lens all stretched out. All you need is a steady hand, and I mean steady! (Bought a mono-pod for it, but haven't tried it out yet.) Functions are easy enough to figure out, and the ergonomics are tremendous. You'll like the "gnarled" thumb grip. The only reason I didn't give it a "5" is Canon chinced on a manual and a shoe cover for the light attachment. Keep in mind that the manual is 276 pages! You can find the manual on Canon's website, but that's a butt load of printing. They also make a "cheat sheet", but the print is so small, you can hardly read it. C'mon Canon! Step up! Overall, a great "hybrid" camera. I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a great all around camera that has incredible zoom. That's the highlight of the camera!

I wanted a high quality, fairly easy to use camera (I didn't want to have to re-learn all the DSLR stuff) with a killer telephoto lens so I can photograph the eagle family in the preserve across the canal from my lanai. I got all that and more in this Canon. After playing with it for a week, I took it to a family wedding to try to get a few pics that the mother of the groom asked me to get. It proved to be lightweight enough to carry around, sharp enough to take really nice closeups from a distance, and the burst is fantastic. But above all, I was able to stand about 15 feet away from my nephew as he played guitar and sang a song--without any shake or fuzziness--just beautiful video with great sound! I was able to get the entire 4+ minute song without messing any of it up!I have since transferred almost 1000 photos from the camera to my laptop with no issues and am in the process of editing them. I'm very happy with all aspects of this camera!

Fabulous camera, definitely good deal to have such featured by that price. With this one I am now retiring a Nikon, an Olympus and a Pentax. Will just keep my pocket-size Sony besides this Canon.

This is a nice camera. It takes real good quality pictures. The only complaint I have is that the view finder is really bad. It not clear, rather fuzzy. The view finder does not fit the quality of the camera.

It takes great quality pics. Excellent zoom. It is very comfortable to hold. I'm still learning to use all its features, but I am extremely happy with it. The only down side that I can mention right now, is that when using all the zoom, you have to have a very steady hand or use a tripod to take a perfect pic. and unfortunately, the programs that come in the CD are for mac 10.6 and up, and I have a 10.5.8, so I haven't been able to use them.

I am headed to rural Ghana for eight weeks this summer, so I knew I wanted a really great camera to take with me. I initially perused both Nikon and Canon DSLR's (I have used a Nikon DSLR in the past), but my friend, who is a pro photographer, steered me towards this camera. She loves her DSLR's, but when she travels, and especially to more remote places like Africa, she uses this camera to take quality photographs. I have not been disappointed. It is lightweight, fairly compact (compared to a DSLR!), and boasts incredible functionality and programming capabilities. The 50X optical zoom is amazing, and has allowed me to capture some truly incredible shots from up close and far away. I cannot wait to explore more of its features as I embark on my trip to Africa!

I love this camera. You can easy use it with auto focus. 3" screen. Optical zoom 30x. Interestingly, you can share you image with friends easily with Wifi were built in. With 12.1MP CMOS, it enough for basic user. I have a Lumix FZ200. The lens goes from 25 - 600mm f/2.8 all the way. It's great. BUT today, I tried shooting a kingfisher and even at 600mm, the bird was too small. The bird was on the opposite bank of a wide and deep river.So I tried the SX50. Was worried that at 1200mm f/6.5, the images won't be good. I was wrong. Managed to get good shots of a cat even at ASA 200. The bokeh was super creamy for the 1200mmm cat portrait.One reviewer maintained that when you view shots, the lens will retract. Perhaps I'm fortunate - this hasn't happened to me.Downside? Would be great if the Canon could be like the FZ200 with f/2.8 all the way.Of course in a few months. maybe even sooner, I'll gripe that the 1200mm lens is not long enough.18 Jan 13HA, just as I said - was shooting some birds on the way to work today. It's a small bird that hangs upside down. Have no idea what it is - it's blue and yellow with a long curved beak.ANYWAY, the problem is, the bird flits from tree to tree. And the electronic zoom lever gets annoying. A manual zoom (like what Fuji does) would be good because then if you get in too tight, you just turn the ring the other way. With e zoom levers, the focal length kind of jumps, so either you're too tight or too far.SO it's not just about a longer zoom but a zoom that's easy to control.

Unfortunately I ordered this camera thinking it was a lot smaller than it actually was. I was looking for something small to fit in my purse. This camera was almost the same size as my Canon digital SLR camera with the 55 mm. lens. It might be a good camera for someone who wanted a camera that has a good telephoto plus a wide angle without carrying a couple of lenses.

This camera is simply amazing and by far the best camera that I have ever owned.I am even taking photos of birds in trees, which was not the intended purpose.Takes virtually no learning.Only issue is that some times hard to set focus on a small item in a larger view as a mind of its own, but I just need to learn how to do it.

Just got back from a 3 week vacation and realized would like to have a camera I could get great clarity from but not have to always take the time to switch lens. I missed a few opportunities for a great shot on my vacation while chnging the lens on my camera. with this one I will be ready and have a equal ot better zoom than I do on my current Cannon. Couldnt believe the Camera arrived so quickly.

I really would havegiven this 3.5 stars, so keep that in mind. It's probably the best point and shoot I've ever used, dut it definitely won't replace my Nikon D5200. The 50x zoom is fantastic. It also performs well under low light conditions. But for someone who is used to quickly adjusting focal length and focus, this camera is as slow as any other point and shoot with zooming in and out. I missed several good shots when I was out birding because of this. So don't plan on using it if you AND the subject are potentially moving. Then I tried it for an event at my church where lighting was less than ideal. The pics were great!So bottom line is: If you already use a little pocket point and shoot, this is a huge step up. But if you own a full DSLR with exchangeable lenses, etc., you'll spend more time noticing what you *can't* do than what you can.

I absolutely love this camera. I have been using Canon cameras since I was 18 years old (I'm 44 now). My main camera is my Canon 7D but I have hardly picked it up since getting the Canon Powershot SX50 HS for my birthday in March (2013). The color is spot-on and the zoom is amazing.The only con about the camera that I've found is that the photos aren't so great in low light. I knew that was an issue but it's not really an issue for me because I know to use another camera if the light is less than ideal. I've added a few photos that I've taken with the camera. I highly recommend the camera, maybe not so much for a beginner (unless you don't mind studying on all the features - it's totally worth it), but if you have even a little bit of knowledge about what settings to use when you're shooting then this is the camera for you.

Love this camera, but why is Canon no longer including a cord to connect the camera to your computer? I called Amazon and they confirmed that this camera no longer comes with the camera. Luckily, I have an old cord that I can use. What's up with that change Canon?

I loved the Canon SX 40 HS but bought the SX 50 HS also as I wanted the ability to shoot RAW, use remote triggering and several other features the 40 didn't have. Also it corrected the location of the Playback button which I was always hitting by mistake. But, sorry to say, they now have located the movie button in an equally bad place which I will have to learn to deal with. I have 5 Canon Digital Bridge cameras and 1 DSLR. This SX 50 HS is now my main "walk around camera " .

I ordered SX50 and after I got that it had a problem with lens retracting, when I tried to zoom on or off something there was a noise like it the camera needs to be lubricated, I sent it back and get a replacement.This one works great without any issues,the zoom is great and the 24mm makes the camera very easy to get a wide view photos.

The video file format has not been very friendly, shutting down after some 10 or 15 minutes.Burning those to DVDs on Windows 7 has also been a science project.The zoom and photos are fine, for the most part.I must say, though, at maximim zoom, taking pictures of very small turtles some 40 feet away (using a tripod and 2 second delay), the actual clicking of the shutter seems to knock the focus off and make that final picture a bit more blurry than the crystal clear image in the LCD showed the instant before.Any remedies for that?Thanks,ddd

I have been looking at cameras for some time. This one is simple to use and takes fantastic pictures. I especially like that I can put in a 32 GB card and never have to worry about running out of space, just click away.The ablility to manually adjust aperature is a huge plus!! I do most photos auto, but the manual option is easy to use. I have had to play around with settings and it didn't take too long to get it right.Using the telephoto lens takes some getting used to, just need some patience.The fully rotating LCD screen makes taking pictures from overhead or below the waist so much easier.I recommend this camera for anyone who wants a camera that is easy to use, takes great pictures and doesn't require an advanced degree to use it.

This camera has some great features, price is very reasonable and the zoom is incredible. My only complaint is that the manual is on a CD. A little hassle up front, but fine after you save the pdf on your mac/pc and then sync it to ibooks or your reading app of choice and access it on your phone/ipad/tablet. Would buy again.

I thought about buying a camera with less zoom, but decided on this one. I think I am happier with this one.And I was told that the megapixels did not matter as much as people often think. The only time megapixels matter is if you want to blow up a picture.So after all the research I did I feel like I got the perfect camera.

Viewfinder is not great, and I wish the FULL instructions came printed out with the product and not just on a disk. The quick start guide is there and that is OK.Quality product, battery strength is just OK. Looking forward to everything it can do, and I have managed to take some very nice photo's from a good long distance.

I would not suggest the 67 mm adaptor and filters as they don't fit well and are hard to get on and off. I returned this part of the order.I bought some 58mm from lensmateonline that work great! Both the filters, adaptor, new lens cap and flare cover.I also love the Megagear leather cover as the bottom gives you a good grip on this camera more like a NIKON would have.The camera is just plain amazing with what it can do with the telephoto!!!! Since I bought mine, many friends also got one. Several of us had other cameras. I like my NIKON D-80 with 18-200 VR lens but it just doesn't get out there like this one. Plus this one would be LIGHT to carry in situations like my Africa trip... and give you the ZOOM to reach out an touch animals you really don't want to touch, ha..

I can't get over the fantastic sharpness, near perfect exposure, this Camera provides in AUTO setting. A true "Point and Shoot" and I am just beginning to understand all, well most, of the Functions. Don't let all the Whistles and Bells Scare you, if you are just wanting to take pictures of friends and family, you will look like an expert. You may become addicted and really get into what all this Camera can do, even at long distances it is incredible. I have shots of a nesting Bald Eagle from 200+ feet where you can count feather and pick out the smallest detail. The Camera will take a huge 32 Gb card but an 8 Gb is plenty, just be sure it is a fast one like a SanDick Extreme HD Video. I also purchased the Two Pack Battery and Charger Kit which was an excellent choice as it is small and works well. The Case (none comes with the Camera, Booo) which is listed in the "Buy Together" really doesn't fit the Camera well. While it is well made, It is a tight and awkward fit and made worse by the Neck strap, you may look at my review, I'm looking for a replacement.

This is a terrific camera that provides wonderful flexibility and excellent, clear and sharp photos. It has amazing image stabilization to complement its powerful zoom capability. I recommend it heartily. Two things to be aware of: 1) the lens cap has a propensity to pop off and is easy enough to forget to replace anyway, so getting a UV filter has been useful for me as a way to protect the lens itself; and (2) it's also easy to forget to turn the LCD screen around when putting it away so I recommend a screen cover for it.

If you don't want to "carry" around with some complicated camera and lens this is a very good choice, it has most of the capabilities of a professional reflex camera but all in one, the only thing I could say in cons is that it requires more light for pictures and the max exposure time you could use is 15 seconds and when using it you can not use more than ISO 80 which means you will need more light for pictures, however in the overall point of view it has very cood pre-sets and it works just fine for an amateur photographer without having to move around with all kind of lens, I would suggest you get a set of filters in order to protect the lens.The video is good quality for a camera, it also has a very good feature, it takes pictures at 240fps making things go veeeeery slow, it's cool if you want to catch your son jumping or dancing or your dog running towards you :).

I really like this Camera! Great value. It does just about everything an armature photographer could ask for, and the 50X zoom is incredible. It even has a manual focus option, which is cumbersome, but it works. The optical image stabilization is remarkable as well allowing me to take crystal clear pictures, even zoomed way in. This camera takes beautiful HD movies as well. No need for a separate movie camera anymore. It can capture movies up to 29 minutes in length, but you will need a large Class 10 SD card. The biggest downside I’ve found is that it stores its movies as “MOV” files, not “MP4”. Even a 2 or 3 minute movie can be several Gigabytes in size, plus, not just anything will play back a “MOV” file, especially files with this much data in them. You will need some good software capable of compressing the movies way down before sharing and uploading to the internet. This camera's strong point is taking pictures, of course, and it does that very well.

I like this camera a lot. It's not great at anything (except its zoom range), but it's good at many, many things. Based upon the specs, I knew I was getting an extraordinary zoom range, from very wide to very long. I knew the camera was reasonably small and compact. I knew that I was getting an electronic viewfinder (but low-resolution). And I knew that I was getting the ability to capture Raw images. All good features.But I didn't expect the optical image stabilization to be as good as it is. It's truly amazing. I've had no difficulty taking sharp hand-held images while zoomed to the equivalent of 1200mm on a 35mm camera. It probably helps that I always use the electronic viewfinder for these telephoto shots, bracing the camera against my face for stability. The electronic viewfinder, by the way, is useful despite its low resolution. The viewfinder shows enough data to compose the image, and of course it doesn't wash out in bright sunlight.

This camera takes terrific "near" shots, the lens captures a clear in focus shot even when people or animals are moving. I am mostly using it for taking distant bird photos and have been delighted with the results. Getting used to the swing-out viewing screen will take a while. The viewfinder is not very good. One reason I bought it sight unseen was some online comments by "serious" photographers" who said carrying this camera was much easier that lugging around a camera with a lot of lenses.

I've had several mega-zoom fixed lens cameras through recent years. Nothing come s close to the image quality and reach of this Canon SX50. Yes, the massive zoom is the reason I bought it, and it does not dissappoint. The pics at the longest push of the zoom are flat (zero depth of field) and noisy in anything other than bold bright sunlight. But hey, that target is almost a mile away, and it's in my lap. The camera is quick, and I get those birds in flight that my previous fixed mega-zooms could only snag with luck. The colors and image quality are most excellent, requiring little if any post production editing. While the auto-scene selection is intuitive and usually correct, I'd really perfer that it let me choose the scene. Sometimes, the choice is wrong and needs to be changed, but the only way around it is to shoot in Program mode. This camera loves low-light shoots.My other fixed lens mega-zooms were useless at dawn and dusk, but this camera does an amazing job, even with moving targets in low light.

Photography is my hobby. Actually I'm at the beginner stage. I was looking for a dslr. My primary target was canon t3i or nikon d3100. But before buying I just did a market research and I found this one. It is made in Japan, so no doubt about the longevity. I was little bit worried about the photo quality, but after takings some snaps, I felt happy because I made the right choice. This camera is really good for wild life photography. It has 50x optical zoom. (215mm) Maximum ISO level 6400. Overall, It is really a great deal! I would highly recommend this.
