I wanted to like this camera but unfortunately I have to look beyond my favorite CANON powershot line for my next point and shoot camera. I ordered this camera and was so excited to replace my recently deceased 4MP CANON powershot that has amazingly lasted over a decade of service. The first week I convinced myself the SX510 HS was great, it takes beautiful well balanced and colorful photos OUT of automatic and scene selection modes (BUT changing manual settings must be done slowly via on screen menu) and I loved throwing photos wirelessly from the camera to my iphone and could text/email nice photos easily from wherever. Week 2 however, the WiFi would not connect to any device: computer, iphones, imacs, powerbooks, just plain dead. I was enthralled with the feature so I exchanged for a new one. Getting a dud electronic every once in a while is understood, Amazon was great to send a new camera almost next day, and I used the same box/wrapping for my return. That's not worth a bad review. The new replacement camera took less than 10 photos and something started rattling like loose plastic inside the camera...come on. It felt light to begin, convinced that was OK, but this could never replace my trusty old powershot in quality.

Excellent little camera. Very light, very compact. Fantastic zoom lens and very nice manual features.Only a couple of small things are a little bit irksome. Due to it being such a small camera, the grip on the right hand side is a bit cramped. It can be difficult to figure out a way to comfortably grasp the camera, especially if you have larger hands. Secondly, the additional camera modes seem a bit arbitrary and not necessarily the best choices; it has an artificial "fish eye lens" effect, but no automatic panorama, which seems like an odd choice to include the former but not the latter. Lastly, the WiFi functionality is very useful, but could use a bit of tweaking. The process of connecting to a local network or device isn't exactly intuitive, and the process of selecting multiple photos to upload and add comments to them is a bit cumbersome. The functionality is definitely very nice, but it feels like it might need some improvement.Overall, however, I'm very happy with the camera. It could use a few small improvements, but for the price you're getting an excellent camera.

Fantastic little camera with a great lens and awesome zoom. I took it on vacation to Jamaica with my girlfriend and they really captured the experience. The video is impressive and the stabilization is really useful when you're filming while walking or driving. I love this little camera.HoweverI purchased it on March 24th 2014, and today, May 18th 2014 it has stopped functioning properly. Less than 2 months. I am outside of the 30 day exchange period, so I will have to pay shipping to get it replaced or fixed. The button that snaps the photo, as well as the zoom slider have both become difficult to use. When I zoom it sticks, and continues to go either out or completely in until it can't any further. The button also intermittently works when I snap a photo, I have to press relatively hard and that leads to a blurry photo. I probably got the lemon of the batch, but in order to review it properly based on my experience I will warrant it only 3 stars.EDIT: I ended up talking to customer service at Amazon, and no questions asked they sent me a return label. Since it will be so easy to exchange, I will bump it up to 4 stars!

I love this camera. I've been using it since late July, so through 3 family vacation events countless garden shots and an amazing peak foliage in VT trip. I bought this as a step up from my Canon Elph (SD 1100 IS) which I also love - and still use. I'm a 50+ year old mom who has aimed for simple, minimal thought needed for most of my picture taking years. You can't think about the f stop and keep them out of the lake at the same time. The Elph got me through years of field trips and hikes and other kid stuff that I just didn't want to have to engage the brain, but still get great photos-and fits in my pocket. I got frustrated with the lack of zoom though, so started looking. There are lots of choices out there, but when I got my more technically minded and camera savvy husband to check my top 5 choices (by way of what I thought I wanted and customer reviews), I gave him the parameters of - least customer complaints, maximum zoom, and stick with Canon if you can because I am already used to their symbols and menu navigation nuisances. He agreed with my top choice despite strong leanings towards Nikon. They will always be faster, but seriously, I'm not that picky. I will never be a professional photographer, but this camera could be used by one. I am still working on reading the manual for a bunch of presets I can make, but it is also totally possible to just set it on auto and use it. I have photos of loons where you can see every feather and the drops of lake water on them. I will say that, before we headed for foliage in VT - I bought a set of filters and adapter ring for it. Just wanted the polarizing filter, but the others may be useful and it was under $30 for the set. Incredible photos, easy to use and a completely reasonable price, and I know I have MUCH to learn to be using it at full capacity!

I am a point and shoot photographer! However, needed a better camera for a double safari - 6 week trip to Africa. By the time I got the camera, dealt with the recall and received the replacement, I had only a couple of weeks to get acquainted with a whole new camera system. Intimidated, YES! Well, I am back from the awesome trip with 2400 pictures and am I impressed with this camera. It was learn as you go, it was amazing the pictures I took of the animals, birds, plants and people! The camera performed flawlessly. I was able to photograph herds of animals on the Ngorongoro Crater floor that looked like dots from the rim! For the price of this camera, I am so impressed with the pictures and the camera can perform like a point and shoot. The pictures are amazing and the camera was light enough for me to wear around my neck all day. I did use a good UV lens. My only disappointment is the low/no light, I wish it had a pre-set for those situations (like a point and shoot). I missed a few shots of lions on night drives because I was unable to change the aperture/ISO yet. The long lens on this camera makes it a great camera!!

A person who has been using a Canon S5 IS for over 6 years, the new Canon SX510 HS has alot of whatyou want. Also tells you how well the Canon S5 IS has fit my needs. Only buying the SX 510 for the extra power to catch Wild Life..This new camera has a 30 X Optical vs the old Canon S5 had a 12 X.12 Pixels is a good all round number. Have been using 8 MP for along time and found it plenty.Only part I miss is the Eye View Finder. The new camera has a 3" Screen. This always presents a problem when shooting in sun.No matter the camera, having only a Screen on the back, is about the only draw back of these kind of cameras. For size, excellent. You could call it a Mini Full Size Camera.Weight: wise: excellent. Has the square flat battery. Although, still think the double A's are good. And easy to find vs the flat types. Have extras. If you have any knowledge of past Canon's, you should be able to zip right through the settings.Easy to have around in crowds. No large lens hanging off the camera. You can catch anything in a distance without an extra lens. The 30 Optical is enough for me, without any wiggle. Have yet to figure why people need Digital Powers. This camera is a must. Especially if you do have the larger cameras with all the lens. Such a compact camera. After this many years of being in the S5, all the Upgrades are Great!

I just received this camera yesterday. Fully charged the battery and took some pictures to test it out. When I tried to turn it off, I got "Lens Error, Restart Camera". The only remedy I found was to take the battery out, wait about a minute, then put it back in and it would usually retract the lens. It would only fully retract when the lens was fully set at 24mm wide angle setting. I would expect a camera with a zoom should be able to retract the lens at any optical extension. So I'm sending this one back and getting a different camera. I found out that "Lens Error" is very common with Canon Powershots and that Canon typically blames it on user error (like dust, sand, or dropping it). I had done none of this and it happened right out of the box. Yes, this camera may have been defective, but I don't want to take the chance that replacing it with an identical one wouldn't do the same 6 months from now. It's such a shame because I was able to take an amazing picture of the moon last night ([...]). All the craters of the moon were visible at 50x zoom and auto settings. And it was taken without any tripods, fully handheld. I'm impressed with the photo quality, but not worth having the lens error every time I try to turn it off after use.

I LOVE this camera, when I first saw it was "to be released" I started getting exited, I need this camera, the zoom was (is) perfect, the price, eh, not outta sight. Finally the day came, It was available to order, I ordered, waiting, patiently for it to arrive in time for our Disneyland vacation. It arrived. I was sceptical, bigger that I was used to, smaller than I expected, would it live up to my 200? ... Then the I took some test shots, garden pics, they looked beautiful!! So we were off to vacation, I took many, many pictures, day, night, motions, stills, portrait, landscapes, flowers, characters, all looked good but only able to see them on the camera. When I got home, I plugged the camera into my 55" HD tv via the hdmi cable, started the slide show.....The moment of truth! Did I get my monies worth? Risking a $4000.00 vacation photo shoot of hundreds of pictures of my kids, the park, capturing the actual "essence" of our grand vacation on a $329.00 camera?I DID!!!I DID !!!

I have been using Canon for the last 15 years. I am now quite familiar with the Canon ELPH series. I was looking for a rather smaller camera to carry around with good telephoto lens. Carrying around my DSLR does take a toll when you are walking about. Especially if you carry a few lenses with you and other equipment. For its ability to take pictures, I believe this camera do deserve at least a 4 star (probably even 5). Low light situation pictures are better. Telephoto pics even with the image stabilizer is still iffy. My problem is the WIFI connection capability. Sounds exciting when I first purchased the camera. Why not. Camera, Video, Wifi...They forgot to mention the system requirements of your computer. IT WILL NOT WORK IF YOU HAVE AN OLDER SYSTEM. Please buyers be aware of this!!! If you are not interested in the Wifi capability, this is quite a good camera. Please check the Canon website for compatibility before you buy...

I had difficulty determining this beforehand, so if anyone's unsure, yes you DO have to provide your own memory card, or else you can't use the camera at all. I bought a Sony 16 GB SDHC/SDHX Class 10 card. Some memory cards might not be fast enough for video recording.Beyond that, I'm no expert, so listen to others more than me. That said, I've made some videos with this and was impressed with the quality. The camera adjusts to light intensity very much like the human eye. This isn't perfect, but neither is the eye. I've tried judging colors, to match stains, from the videos and also from looking directly at the same objects with my own eyes. In both cases, this is quite difficult if brilliant daylight is shining from behind. However, when I showed my videos to the paint vendor, he was surprised that the recording came out so well.I store the camera in the box it came in. I don't plan to use it much, so there's no need for a protective case. If you plan to take this around a lot, buy a case.

Excellent camera. I've had almost every Canon DSLR out there and this one is a great value for the price and quality. Its not a small camera that fits in your purse or pocket, but if you don't mind carrying it in addition to a purse or in a backpack then this is the only camera you need.I am blown away at the quality of the images and video. The optical zoom makes me incredible photos even when all the way zoomed to a subject. However, as with all digital zoom features, the image gets grainy and slightly blurry when zoomed out to max digital capacity. This should not be a surprise to anyone who knows cameras though, they all do that. With the 50x optical zoom, i haven't taken a bad photo yet.Highly recommend this camera to the enthusiast or hobbyist. My only suggestion is that you purchase an additional battery or two so that you don't run out of battery life and miss "the" shot. I always have 2 additional batteries that are fully charged in my case.

I "upgraded" to this camera from the SX30IS. Based on the reviews, I expected better speed and more artistic flexibility. I was wrong.First, the SX50HS's nighttime performance is far below that of the previous SX cameras, due to the so-called "upgrades." First, if you're using a shutter slower than 1 second, the camera takes away any ISO options and locks it on 100- Since I like to take a lot of SFX photos, that limitation sucks.Second, it has a hard time focusing at night- It can't seem to find anything in low-light situations and is constantly searching. The SX30IS is exceptional in this regard but the SX50HS sucks. Finally, the only option for night shooting is a "high speed burst" which combines several photos, similar to HDR. You have no option but a tripod with this and if anything moves in the shot, it's lost. The only remaining options are to toggle back and forth between manual and aperture priority till you find something useable.Zoom- incredible. Flip-out screen- marvelous. Daytime performance exceeds most DSLRs and can be operated with one hand.Quicktime video? WTF were they thinking? That sucks. Nobody uses that crap, Canon, get rid of it.I've had this camera over a month and have a love/hate relationship with it. I loved my previous SX30IS and I'm beginning to regret that I sold it to get the SX50IS.

I had been on the fence on buying a good camera to take with me on a study abroad trip overseas and this proved to be a great investment so far. What surprised me the most about this camera was the zoom which even had a pro photographer friend of mine pleasantly surprised by the quality at such distance. The WiFi integration worked smoothly, although I will say that if you have a Mac, there is no direct Camera-Mac link to be made but to me, it really does not matter since it's as easy as downloading from the Canon site or using the SD card.So far, battery life is pretty great. I've gone out downtown for an afternoon shooting and still had three battery indicators full by the end of the day.I am a college student looking to document my trip with great shots with this camera and so far it has not disappointed me! If you are looking for a step up but not ready to buy a $500+ camera, I would definitely recommend!

This camera is perfect for us - zoom, quick shutter, wifi enabled. HOWEVER, the instructions for getting it connected to the internet and then to your computer are a mess! For example, the instructions tell you to enter your authentication code. Hours of googling finally explained that the "MAC" # on the camera is the authentication code. How was I to know that?! Also, you need to download software from the canon site to make it connect to your computer but no where does it say where to go to download it. And the instructions read as though they were written in some other language and then "google translated" or something. I tried calling for help to the help line and he advised getting a USB cable to connect it to my computer.. HELLO! The wifi is this camera's big selling feature! I finally did manage to get it working and it is wonderful, but the trek to this point was a little arduous! Canon - just sit down and work on your instructions!

I bought this camera to replace my beloved, much-used Kodak z981. Like the SX50, it was a beyond-the-basics point and shoot camera, meaning that you can put it in Manual setting easily. My Kodak had about 26x zoom. The Canon has 50x zoom. And it is WORTH.EVERY.PENNY! I went to a lake outside town last night after work. Geese and duck species often can be found here. I was standing about 40 feet away from the shore and got outstanding photos of wood ducks, mallards, and Canada geese. The colors are true to life and the images are crisp and clear until you get ALLLLL the way zoomed out. I had to do minimal post-processing cleanup.WORD TO THE WISE, THOUGH: You have to flip open the back screen of the camera to know what you're shooting in a hurry! Coming from the Kodak, I was used to being able to aim as I moved without having to fiddle with the screen covering, and I missed an amazing shot of a heron yesterday because I forgot about the screen. Live and learn....but I'll never make that mistake again.

It worked fine for a while then it just stopped working. It was still under warranty so I contacted Canon's warranty people who told me to send it to them. I did - at my expense. They responded quickly that it would not be repaired. They said their "warranty" on their "lower end" cameras is not really for repair. What they do is take a similar camera off the shelf and send it to you. They do not repair the camera you sent and send it back. They said there is no guarantee that you will get the same camera model or one with the same features. When I pointed out that this seemed to fly in the face of their warranty they had no reasonable comment other than to say that I could certainly buy another camera. It's really too bad because I liked the camera and its features. Needless to say I will never buy another Canon.

I loved this little camera. Great features and photos. In first couple weeks had a problem--the screen regularly froze and camera turned off. Fortunately Amazon as always was great and I returned for another. After 6 months the zoom started wobbling. Sent it to Canon for repair. Got an email saying they didn't work on that part, I'd get a new or refurbished. I called to say i did not want a refurbished camera given that i'd already had problems with two of this model. Too bad they said, you're getting refurbished. I asked to talk to customer relations. Got a lady who told me it was in the warranty they could give me refurbished and furthermore they had no new ones to give--this is the CAnon facility mind you. I called back to try to talk to another rep--was told they couldln't transfer me. Then, when i said i was recording it, and told him i had been transferred last time, suddenly he now could transfer me. Back to initial rep who refused to let me talk to anyone else and refused to budge on sending a new camera, even though it was an option in the email. I wrote letters and emails to management. Got a response, said they'd send me a new camera after i said i had the whole thing on recording and was thinking of posting to youtube. but they wouldn't pay for me to ship the old one back. Anyway this story goes on and on, including me mailing the camera back and being told it actually WAS a new one and they were shipping the same camera back to me. Was a nightmare. I don't know if any of the other companies are better, but i've been a solid Canon customer for 20 years--as i told them--and I won't be anymore. They need to take lessons from Amazon on customer service. Hope this camera lasts awhile as I know now it won't get serviced properly without it being more trouble than it's worth.

For the money, this is definitely a 5 star camera. It performed really well.Things I liked about the camera:- Turns on and is ready to use in like two seconds, so it is easy to catch unpredictable shots at any moment.- Really great with low light! I was able to take some cool shots on indoor rides like "It's a small world" without a flash. Impressed.- Compact style, it is easy to hold and lightweight. The rubber grip is great too.- Auto focus is pretty smart, I took alot of clear shots.- Zoom abilities are really powerful. The separate lens really helps get some tight shots.- Inexpensive enough where it isn't the end of the world if it gets lost, stolen or broken during a vacation.- Holds a charge all day, I took about 300+ photos in one day and it worked great.- Uses a thin rechargeable battery - it is more convenient and lightweight than AA batteries.- Feels solid and well made/durable.- Takes quality photos! It did the job excellently for a point and shoot camera.

I had a great Canon PowerShot sx170 that I dropped and broke on my last trip. I was going to order the Canon Sx260 HS to replace it but ordered this one instead. It was okay but I had a few issues that made me return this item. First of all, the camera shell is plastic and seemed cheaply made. I felt that an occasional bump might break the camera easily. Secondly, the lens cap was separate and manually operated. On my old sx170 the camera autoclosed the lens cap when you turn off the camera. Thirdly, the flash does not pop up automatically. This is a pain for me. I don't like the shape of the camera either, the lens is so big and sticks out so far that it could not easily fit in a pocket. I ordered the Canon sx260 to replace this one. I think I will be happier with it although the sx260 doesn't have wifi like this one. I want it primarily for traveling and so these missing features are more important to me.

This is a great camera., The 50 x zoom really is the same as a 24mm to 1200mm lens costing Mega bucks. Don't misanderstand, it's not the quality of the $$$ 24-1200mm lens but it does a very nice job. Word a caution: Don't expect to take pix or video at full zoom without a tripod or way to stabilize the camera. At full zoom you WILL see camera shake if the camera is not stabilized with a tripod of some other means to steady the shot. But for home video/stills, this camera does a great job. I have many rigs from Canon 5d Mark 2 down to GX1 but this unit fits the bill for casual walk about use. Highly recommend. Only one minor downside, you'll need to purchase a seperate filter "Adapter" if you want to use filters. Standard filters that screw onto the camera are NOT supported without the adapter.Update: I just purchased the filter adapter for the SX-50 that also comes with three filters, a soft rubber (?) hood etc that works just great. Kit also included a new lens cap that is necessary as the adapetr allows 58mm filters (etc) to be used. I now leave the included 58mm UV filter on the camera to protect the lens. The Accessory Kit for CANON PowerShot SX50 HS Digital Camera - Includes: 58MM Lens Adapter Ring + Vivitar Filter Kit (UV, CPL, FLD) + Carry PouchSold by Digital Goja. Telephoto /zoom lens has exceeded my expectations. I am happy with my choice in selecting this camera. My previous Canon camera was user friendly and this seems consistent. I will figure out the WiFi upload of photos but in the meantime I can use the cable from my other camera to import photos to my computer. I'm not a professional photographer. I simply like taking pictures and storing them on the computer. My previous camera was a Kodak Easyshare about eight years old, so this was a big step up in technology. Maybe most important, the pictures are very high resolution, clear, with excellent color. I haven't had the camera very long, so most of the pictures have been taken on "auto" or the sports setting. They're beautiful. The camera has a 50x zoom, and you need to be well-braced or use a tripod to keep the camera steady. If you do that, you get great pictures over a very long distance. The camera has a huge assortment of settings and features. It takes a lot of time to acquaint yourself with them, and there's no manual. You have to get it on-line and there are too many pages to print. A manual would have been a huge plus.If it's been a long time since you changed cameras, here's something you might keep in mind: I always used my all-in-one printer as the vehicle for getting my SD card read into my computer. It wouldn't do it with my new camera. At first I thought it might be the camera. Then I thought it might be the SD card. Then I read that my OS (XP) might not read the newer type of SD card. I ultimately found that it was the printer that couldn't read it. I put the SD card in an SD card reader and popped it into a USB port and it worked fine.Overall, I really like this camera. It's heavy enough to have some substance without being too heavy to handle. If you're going to use the 50x zoom (and why wouldn't you?) you should invest in a tripod.

I was so anxious to receive this camera, only to be completely disappointed. I have a Canon PowerShot SX260 HS, and I took pictures side by side and compared the two. The Canon PowerShot SX260 HS took much better photos. The SX 510 had too much noise. Even in the lower ISO setting. Maybe i didn't set it up right, i don't know. All i know is that my Canon PowerShot SX260 HS was alot better, and I've never had to do anything to it but just "Point and Shoot". The SX 510 had blurry photos indoors. It just wasn't right. I wish i was one of those people that got the good camera. Maybe it was a lemon. Don't know. I sure don't feel like giving it another shot. =(
