I'm a rookie to photography. I debated on on the latest Lumix superzoom vs. the SX50 for months but pulled the trigger on the SX50. The camera is incredibly easy to operate in any mode and i'm just touching the surface of what you can do with this thing. I like the fact i don't have to carry around different lenses and all that mess either. Do yourself a favor and get a tripod while your ordering. When you zoom this baby in all the way it will be a little jumpy, the tripod takes care of that.

You cannot beat this camera for the price. The zoom lense is out of this world, but when you go out to 100 or 200x you better have it on a tripod. I took zoomed pictures of the moon and that was all you could see. Like looking through a telescope. 50x and lower and the quality of the shots are crisp and clear. I have seen pictures taken by cameras that cost $5000 or more and there was not a whole lot of difference in quality. In some cases this camera takes better pictures than the expensive ones. It is easy to use and fast. It automatically will switch between far off or micro shots wish is nice. I use this camera for personal use (animals, flowers, nature, vacations) and for work (surveillance/investigations) and it is perfect for both without breaking the bank. The other great item to consider is if you drop it, it breaks, is stolen, etc.---you are not out of a lot a money. Pick up another and keep going. By the way the video and sound is impressive too along with the image stabilizer.

I bought this camera because of it's highly rated reviews and because of the 50x zoom. I previously owned a Fuji HS20EXR bridge camera and it worked very well for me. I used it (Fuji)on a lot of concerts and lakers/clippers games. I also used it on some of our trips and It took a lot of wonderful landscape shots. I am a huge Canon fan and I am on my 2nd Canon SLR camera and I own some pretty decent canon lens. But I really don't get the hype about the SX50. It is very slow to focus, performs poorly in low light conditions and I get a lot of blurry images. I am selling my SX50 and a Fuji HS50EXR is already on its way. I still love Canon but will definitely stay away from its SX bridge camera series.

I already own a Panasonic FZ150, which I've been happy with, but I bought this one for its 2X greater zoom, and have not been disappointed. For someone who wants to keep busy at night, as well as during the day, right out of the box this makes an acceptable, extremely compact, but far less complicated and expensive, substitute for an afocal digiscoping set-up, and it is dependably better than the FZ150 plus normal (1.7X) teleconverter. Just fasten the SX50 to a table-top tripod securely, set it on a cold car hood outside, fold out the rotating LCD, and you're ready to shoot the Moon and larger planets, without worrying about a cool-down period, fiddling with complex multi-part equipment, or needing anything but the zoom to locate objects. (Do remember to use the self-timer.) For the Moon for example, on the right days of the month with a good sky, my SX50 will faithfully image all 5 significant craters inside Clavius, plus Rupes Recta (the Straight Wall) above it. My FZ150 could never do that, even with an Olympus TCon17 teleconverter attached - it simply lacked the resolving power. With a telescopic glass solar filter held in front of the lens (BE CAREFUL!), the camera can also image sunspots during the day. The rings of Saturn plus the bands and moons of Jupiter are a little more challenging, and may require the use of manual exposure mode, plus manual focus, plus the 2X or 4X digital teleconverter, but usable results can still be obtained with perseverance. Just thought I'd mention a pleasing aspect of this camera's extreme zoom range not emphasized in previous user reviews (most of which I agree with).

This is my first modern camera in quite some time. Needless to say it blew me away! I can sit on my porch and video or photograph the deer on the mountainside across the valley. Wow. This camera has a learning curve but once you read the manual a couple times everything makes sense. I like the manual is online since those teeny tiny books they usually are printed so small that it makes sense just to download the pdf and stick it on the smartphone to keep with me.Pros: Quick lens speedAuto focus works wellBattery life is goodOuter display flips aroundSelf time has lots of featuresSlow motion is nice featurevideo looks greatWide angle is surprisingly wideCons: Needs tripod or mono pod for best results at maximum zoom 200xlearning curve is high going from 7 year old three button pocket shooterlittle bigger than i am used to physicallyIn conclusion get a 32 gig card, 1 extra battery and a light tripod or stick to use with this camera. Take lots of shots and just sort out the best. My days of having the dark spot of what i wanted to photograph in the pictures are over. Now people can see what I saw even at a distance.

This is a very compact, versatile camera with a surprisingly good zoom lens. I have gotten some excellent shots even at full zoom length in bright sunlight. It allows for full manual control including manual focus. Picture quality very much depends on how much light is available. Above ISO 200 to 400 grain is very noticeable. As with any camera, if you are going for high quality pictures you'll have to work around its limitations. Don't expect DSLR performance, but do expect a well-designed point-and-shoot camera with a high-powered zoom lens and full manual controls.

Overall I like this camera's features and ease of use. One feature that I especially like is the hot shoe, which many cameras in this category and price range don't have. The camera takes very good telephoto shots, especially considering the price of the camera. The autofocus is very quick for a zoom lense with such a wide range. One negative is that the electronic viewfinder (EVF) is smaller than is desirable. Canon may have opted to use a smaller EVF to reduce power consumption so that a battery would last longer on a charge or to take some of the load off of the processor, but I would prefer to have a larger viewfinder that makes it easier to view and compose shots. The camera has a photostitch mode that assists in taking sequential shots that can be used with Canon's software to produce panoramas. This is a feature that I hope Canon will keep, but I would also like to have an in-camera sweep panorama mode that works somewhat like the Sony cameras. And I would like to add an option to take 1080p video at 60 frames per second (FPS). With everything considered (features, price, etc.), I would give this camera a rating of 4.6 out of 5.

After nearly three years of use, I decided to sell my trusty Canon Powershot SX1 HS and buy the new Canon Powershot SX50 HS. Here's the difference.Pros (Where SX50 is better than the SX1)Better images. Outdoors the SX1 takes great shots under the perfect light conditions, the SX50 takes better shots under less perfect conditions.SX50 has more intuitive settings compared to the SX1. For example, in order to record HD videos in the SX1, you have to change the aspect ratio of the photo settings from 4:3 to widescreen. In the SX50, the video resolution and photo aspect ratio are independent of one another.Better image stabilization.Better LCD screen and EVF.Higher resolution shots. (12 MP vs 10MP).Longer zoom (50x vs 20x)Better low light shots. I had to buy and use a Canon Speedlight 270 EX to improve my night and indoor shots).More solid build.Lighter weight.Pros (found on both cameras)Ability to save images in RAW format. Only the SX1 and the SX50 could save in RAW. The rest, SX20, SX40, etc. could not do.Cons (Where SX1 was better than SX50)No remote control. The SX1 had a very useful remote that you can use to take shots with.No longer uses AA batteries. The AA batteries gave me a lot o flexibility should I run out of juice. I can simply go to any store, buy batteries and continue taking shots. Now I need to buy an extra battery for the SX50 (shop where I bought it ran out of batteries). At least I can use my AA Eneloop batteries for other uses like on my flash and on my wireless mouse. No lens hood, no USB cable, no AV cables included. In the SX1 box, all of these accessories were included. All you have in the box is the camera, battery, charger, CDs and manuals. With the exception of the remote, all the cons of the SX50 can easily be offset by buying the things that you want (lens hood, cables, etc.). And the features far outweigh the loss of the remote. Image quality by itself is worth the buy.

The camera is great. I love all the settings. I didn't like that I had to find the actual manual online, but it wasn't that big of a deal to cost a star. Shipping was fast and easy. Would recommend the camera for someone who wants an every day point and shoot. Even when you zoom in close, the picture is still great.

The camera focus is much faster than the Nikon 520 I had purchased just a month before I returned it and bought the Canon. I wasn't sure that the Canon would be much faster than the Nikon, but I was leaving on a family vacation very soon so I figured it would be a good test. I was thrilled with the camera on the trip, it focused fast so I got some good shots of my 1 year old granddaughter running around and on the rides at Disneyland. It also worked well in low light at the park. My one wish is that the lens was faster, would have been nice to have a 1.8 aperture for portrait shots.

I have a couple of digital cameras that were considered "superzoom" at the time. One was 12X and the other was 30x. This one is 50x optical zoom, which has helped me create some great close up shots of far away scenes and birds. Both my former cameras were plagued by slow shutter lag, so the picture I took was sometimes not the picture I got, and then the recovery time before I could take the next shot was too slow for wildlife or aviation shots. This camera has a quick shutter and very fast recovery time so I can take the next shot quickly. No longer do I take a shot of bird and then realize that the bird has flown off before the camera shows anything in the viewfinder again. Now I can take a shot of the bird, and then take a shot of the same bird lifting off.Sometimes when you are at maximum zoom, it could be hard to find what you were looking at because you may have moved the camera, but the Canon helps solve that problem by supplying a button that will zoom out to a wider field momentarily so you can find the subject again, and then it zooms back in. Great feature!Batter life is great, over 500 photos on our 4 day weekend camping trip and the battery still didn't show as needing a charge.

This a camera that is close to perfect. It does what I want for bird watching. It is compact and with huge zoom which permits approximation that other people, including myself, with large and expensive DSLR envy. However, there are couple of points that are not favorable:1. You can not find easily a bird in a electronic viewfinder (n comparisson with the DSLR cameras which have optical viewfinder). This will create some problems and many times, not being able to find your bird while zoomng in, you will loose the shot. The other problem is that ina fast birst mode, the autofocus is not precise. In any case, I was able to make some for me, very gratifyuing outputs (photos): [...]

I read many reviews about this camera, both professional in magazines and non-professional on amazon, before purchasing it.Virtually every one said great things about this camera, its extreme lens, excellentimage and image stabilization, even at maximum focal lengths. And all I can sayis that they were all absolutely correct!I used this camera on a trip to baseball's Spring Training in Florida and was ableto get perfect pictures from the upper stands, all the way across the ballpark. The image stabilizers worked perfectly, even at maximum zoom, with only a small numbershowing movement blur. I have a Lumix ZS9, with a 16x zoom and with image stabilization, Istill average about 10% or less that do not show movement blur. Since the camera wasnew, I used it set mostly on auto and the exposure and color were perfect. I alsoexperimented with the HDR function and got some really beautiful pictures. I am an advanced amateurtype of photographer, having taken a couple of college courses and in the past I mainly used SLRsand interchangeable lenses. Having a camera this compact, with incredible zoom and excellent photoquality has relegated my other equipment to the back of my closet and to re-sell stores. Whenthe people I was traveling with saw my pictures, they decided to buy the SX50 for their tripto the arctic next year.I LOVE this camera and would recommend it to anyone, amateur or advanced.

Seems OK for snap shots with flash, but has some problems with focusing in nature shots; Pictures are not sharp enough and exposure is not correct. Zoom is useful, however using it at 30x is very demanding in stability. Hard to use to catch action shots. What you see is not what you get due to processing delays.

After owning several Canon point and shoots, I spent a log time reviewing and trying to decide--DSLR vs. a better point and shoot. Realizing I don't photograph anymore the way I did with my trusty old Minolta fully manual film SLR, and that I missed the Canon S3 IS that my husband stole from me for his own use, and that I just didn't want the expense and weight of DSLR's and lenses for the casual stuff I use a camera for nowadays, I opted for this model based on multiple great reviews from many sites on-line. I didn't even bother to take a single picture with it when, after charging the battery and firing it up, I realized that Canon had eliminated a bunch of basic choices in its Scene settings. ie.: landscape, night landscape, landscape with portrait, beach, foliage, etc. Now, I realize that turning the dial to Auto is likely to produce the same type of photo that I would have achieved if I had those scene settings to choose from, but I assume they are there for a reason on the older models, and I wasn't happy that they were gone. I found it disconcerting that they kept fireworks (a setting that will get used once a year) but got rid of landscape, which I bet people use 50% of the time. I traded the camera in the next week for the Nikon P50. I like the Canon for the variable angle screen, ease of use, and being one of the companies that still has a viewfinder.

I am not a pro in cameras.... I was so happy with my canon sd750. But this is not so good as I expected. The pictures are blurry at times. We have to wait for a long time then it clears up... Outdoor pictures are good. No so good at low light.
