Let me be honest. I originally wanted the Panasonic FZ200. But the price skyrocketed over $100 in a couple of weeks. I honestly could not justify spending well over $500 for a bridge camera, although the f2.8 aperture over the entire zoom was screaming for me to get it. The Canon SX50 was my second choice, mainly for its insane 50x zoom. I picked it up for $369. Low light shooting and long reach have always been big draws, along with photo quality for me as a wildlife enthusiast. Turns out that this camera isn't too bad in low light either, although the trade off is higher ISO and grainier shots. Sure, I've had several DSLR's and I carried large lenses around for years. I finally got tired of all that bulk and decided to accept the trade off in a smaller sensor and photo quality. I'm not a professional and don't require full sensor quality. I opted for the SX50 based on pretty darned good reviews and the crazy long reach of the lens. Based on the many test shots I've taken both indoors and out, I am very happy with the performance of this camera! I may not have the critical expectations of a professional reviewer, but I know what I like and this bridge camera satisfies. Photo quality is very good and the 50x (200x digital) reach is incredible! That reach will bring that bird or coyote in the distance up close and personal. Also, remember that any camera is only as good as the photographer. If you don't know how to use a camera to its full potential, don't blame the camera! The SX50 is the best sub-DSLR camera I've owned to date and it serves my purposes quite well.

We are very pleased with this camera--I would give it 5 stars, but just started using it and have not gone through many of its technical options like shooting in low light etc.It has a superb optical zoom capability and is takes sharp, clear pictures. Great to handle.Couple of negatives--nothing to do with the camera itself. 1) It does not come with a carrier case, so you have to find and pay for one. 2) The lens does not recess, so it is a bit awkward to fit into a carry-bag which means you have to lug it around and 3) I wish they had an attachment for a wide angle lens.

No viewfinder and it would be nice if a manual were included (easy enough to download but paper one would make reference easier on the go).Other than that, I can't find much of anything to complain about.Takes beautiful pictures, remarkable video, layout of settings/ controls is intuitive and easy to use.LCD is nice, bright but as expected difficult to see in bright sun.Camera is small and very lightweight which I find is a plus.Zoom lens quality may be somewhat lacking for seasoned pros (some chromatic aberations) but I find it extremely useful and certainly high enough standards/ quality for my use ... and the camrea is well made overall. It's a great camera and fully automatic so easy to use. Manual settings are there if you want to override the auto settings but auto really does a nice job. CMOS sensor produces very nice clear photos, especially at lower ISO settings (400 or less).I'd recommend this camera for anyone wanting a lightweight, easy to use camera that produces quality photos. Wonderful for people on the go.

I never had the lens get stuck so many times, Canon replaced the whole camera once and the second time they wanted to charge full price. They DO NOT repair them but replace them completely. Why build something that you can never repair?!My guess is something is stuck behind the lens enclosure, whether its sand or something else. From what I've read they glue on the Lens!I previously owned an SX 30 which I was really happy with and had not even one Lens Error.I thought the SX 50 would be a great step up, apparently not.I am not happy now that I have a pretty much dead camera, at least when it was working it took good photos. Was good for a year but I would avoid this camera its no substitute for a good DSLR with interchangeable lenses. For the investment spending another hundred or two hundred is worth it if your a serious about your photography.And...Glue?!

I have a really good Nikon, but I wanted something to carry around with me all the time and was sick of crappy smartphone pics. I researched heavily before I chose this camera and I haven't been disappointed. First the pros: pretty good design with nice hand-feel, but I wish it came with a wrist strap. The flash doesn't pop up automatically, which for me is a pro because I often prefer the light effect with no flash, but if this concerns you, not to worry, it does let you know when it would prefer to use the flash. The recording feature with HDMI video is a nice feature which I have frequently used. you can also snap pics while recording, but you should note that it does pause the video for a second with a still shot. The zoom can't be beat. When you are zoomed all the way out you will need a tripod or at the least, have the camera sitting on something, but the shots I got of the moon are unreal. The pics in general come out beautiful. Fantastic color and richness. The option for grouping shots on action mode is also nice. My biggest con of this camera is that some features are buried in menus making them cumbersome to access. Also, I wish it was more obvious when you are looking through your shots what is video and what is a pic. More than once, I've been going too fast and deleted something that I thought was a pic, when it was a video. (note that there is a notation over the pic, but if you are not paying close enough attention you can easily miss it). Overall, I would highly recommend this camera for either a solid camera if this is your only one, or an excellent in-between camera to pair with your more expensive one.

This is a game changer for the camera world! I almost got the top competitor, with a 42x, but found four independent reviews between this and the competitor and the Canon won all four. There's no cell phone in the world that can come close to doing what this does. Any DSLR would need a massively expensive lens to match what this 50mm can reach and you wouldn't want to hike with it! I love everything about it! I could go on and on echoing the positive reviews and features, and countering the negative ones with stuff like, "there's a fix for that, just move your thumb." Make sure you get an extra battery for it - it's easy to get carried away shooting! The "Case Logic DCB-304 Compact System/Hybrid Camera Case" is a perfect fit.

I have to tell you I spent a lot of time reviewing cameras before I actually pulled the trigger. I read review after review after review, describing features and benefits, likes and dislikes of almost every similarly priced camera of almost every make and model. My wife and I are about to have our first and second child and were looking for a decently priced camera that would suite our needs, such as low light and random movement often experienced by children. Based off of the reviews by both customers and c-net and the like I decided on this model. There are only a few pictures through it so far, but y wife is extremely satisfied so far. The pictures are crisp and clear, the functions are easy to operate, and the Wi-Fi is really convenient. I have taken pictures of our dogs both in and out of the house, squirrels running around outside, and everything that has come out of it has been wonderful.Overall I am extremely happy that I chose this camera. I really do not think I could have done better, especially for the price.

I have several other very nice Canon Cameras-they are wonderful. The shutter speed on each is fast and I hardly ever miss a picture, but with this camera, the shutter is slow and I miss many great pictures. I HATE IT and wish a million times I hadn't purchased this camera. The zoom is really nice and that is about all there is to it. I just don't like it. I was and had been wanting a smaller nice camera that wasn't large in size that would take excellent fast picture. A few pictuers do turn out nice, but just every once in a while. I wish I had purchased another brand. Too late now and I am stuck with it, which looks nice sitting on the shelf.

Just got back from Holland Tulip festival and Italy. Loved the results! But I mostly used it on Auto because I haven't figured out all of the options yet. I'd like to have more manual control, but it's a big learning curve to remember which setting does what and how many screens do I have to get through to find the setting. Beyond that, it's light weight, very easy to use in Auto setting, and 99% of shots are clear and great. Spoiler Alert: if you don't know how to set up or frame a shot you still won't like your pics. Remember lighting and staging count. Try to be aware of things like trees growing out of heads :-P

Zooooooooooooooooooom even past that. 50 power but you better buy a tripod. Took shots of the Eclipse last night April 14 to 15 and I could zoom it so it OVER-FILLED the screen. Get a programmed flash, 420EX by Canon, and be ready to take some of the finest pictures possible with a point and shoot. I did a lot of research before buying this, and this has the best ratings and actually performs up to those ratings. Just buy it and thank Canon for one of the finest cameras ever. It would take thousands of dollars in lenses to match this with a reflex camera. They have abilities that this can't match, but for the price, this is your camera.

Ok really a camera for almost $400 dollars and no USB cord? what's up with that! Really folks giving this camera all the praise for what? Just because it is the most powerful zoom lense for point and shot camera on the market. It can take a clear detailed focused picture of a knats ass at 100 yards. Has a super powerful processor with Canons latest technology same used in higher end canon DSLR camera's quick autofocus through out the zoom lenses range. Great low light abilities unless you want to stay up all night taking a long exposure shot of the moon. Raw format available too. Made in Japan hello! This is really a great camera!!!. The one star is only because no USB cord is supplied with camera kit. You can take professional photos with this camera but It don't do you any good if you kan't download it to your computer or printer.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 50x Wide-Angle Optical Image Stabilized ZoomI traded up from the SX40 to improve the zoom for taking bird pictures. The SX50 focuses faster and the shutter release is faster, both important for capturing birds that seem to flit from branch to branch. The center focus option is a big improvement and allows one to minimize focusing on branches and leaves. One typically has to wait till winter to shoot bird pictures to avoid the leaves, but this camera extends that season. I like the fine (F) setting that maximizes the number of pixels. One can use just a little digital zoom without sacraficing image quality. I could go to 75X zoom and still get nice images. The camera seems lighter than the SX40. I walked miles with the camera strap around my neck with no discomfort. Try that with a DSLR with a big zoom AF VR lens and you will quickly switch to this bridge camera for wildlife pictures. The DSLRs can't be beat for landscapes and portraits, so don't toss it just yet.I use a 58mm filter adapter so I can use a polarizing filter to take pictures of water birds (ducks, geese, shore birds). The generic filter adapters have a bayonet type of attachment, not threads. They work, but not perfectly matched for the Canon cameras (SX20, 30, 40, and 50). You need to buy a new lens cap to fit the 58mm filters. The high dynamic range (HDR) works very well, especially for indoor lighting. A nice addition to the SX50.This year, Canon did not include the USB camera-to-computer connector. I guess they assume everyone has the SDHC slot on their computer. The SX40 flash attachment cover is gone. Too bad, it was a nice attachment to keep the flash shoe from snagging on your camera bag. Some people do object to not getting a hard copy of the full instruction manual, but the pdf can be downloaded to your e-reader (e.g., iPod, iPhone, etc.) and taken with you into the field. However, Canon should make hard copies available upon request to those who register their new camera. Good PR.One magazine review complained about chromatic aberration in the SX50. I have tried to post pictures that show this does not always happen. The issue comes up when photographing white birds against a blue background. I didn't see CA in any of my shots.Enough, I highly recommend the SX50 to any wildlife photographers who go into the field to shoot their pictures.

Alright this is a great camera. But it has some PITFALLS that are making me return it in favor of a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200This things main point is ZOOM... PERIOD. A monster 1200mm (50X) lens is on this baby and the optics are impeccable. Add in the DIGIC 5 processor and digital zoom and you have 200X of usable zoom. an image taken at 200X is quite usable.Manual mode on this camera is plain FUN. You even get control over the power of the flash, something I have never seen in another camera. Is this thing a performer in low light, i have reservations. Testing it against my Sony DSC-HX100V the HX100V beats the hell out of this camera because it does not limit its ISO to 80 in shutter speeds longer than 1 second. This is an arbitrary limit, it has nothing to do with what the camera CAN technically do its what canon wants you doing with their equipment. The camera has incredibly bad video encoding which results in you toting 4GB for 30 minutes of 720p HD video where in my Sony DSC-HX100V I can record easily double that, thanks to it using AVCHD codecs. This camera like the Sony has the dumb 30 minute video limit because of European Union tax on 'camcorders' so to avoid that tax they limit it's video recording. Can these limitations be avoided, yes they can by using a firmware hack kit called CHDK (Google it and get to know it, it's not supported on the SX50 yet an alpha release is in testing)So is this camera perfect, no. Is this camera probably the best you can get it's price range, more than likely a yes. (Mind you that 50x lens alone on a DSLR will cost you $100k) I got 400k dollars in lenses for 400 dollars.Knocking a star off for the arbitrary limitations on here, Canon you know that there is no camcorder tax in the united states. Give us a USA firmware. and another star for the noisy zoom and clicky lens stabilization and poor auto focus. So do I recommend buying this camera..If you are after LOTS of zoom and don't really care about attaching filters to your camera and extending the optical abilities, don't need to record lots of video, don't care if your AF lamp can light a whole room and dont care that much about battery life. fineBut in retrospect the Panasonic FZ200 has a whopping 540 shots per battery.3 batteries = 1540 shots.this thing3 batteries = 1000 shots or so.

I primarily use a Sony a77 and a Panasonic G5 for long range wildlife photography, locally and in the National Parks. The longest manageable lens I have is a Pany 100-300mm, 600mm equivalent. I was posting on several forums, asking about long zoom options and got lots of suggestions,..... all for very heavy and expensive lenses that would give me 750mm reach. One member suggested,..."try the Canon SX50, you might be surprised at the results."Well folks, I did try it and I was pleasantly surprised. I've used the SX50 almost daily, side by side with my Sony and Panasonic. The lens at 1200mm optical zoom is amazing, not only for reach but also for clarity. Even 2X digital zoom (2400mm) is very, very good. It's hard to tell it's digital zoom. All this for less than half the price of a 750mm option for my other cameras. It's hard to even imagine the power of this lens until you've seen it. It's my go to camera for distant birds and wildlife.Although I rate this camera a 5, that is exclusively for the lens. It is not the best all around camera in it's class. For kids' sports, for example, it comes up short in the continuous shooting modes. It does not have in camera panorama or high speed high def video like others in it's class. The image quality is better than any of the other small sensor cameras I've used. The long reach and high image quality will make this a camera that most people will enjoy. When discussed on forums, a frequent comment, which I share is,....."This is the most fun camera I've ever had!"Jack

This camera will do.It's lightweight, it's compact, and it takes killer video and photos. If I would say one bad thing about it I would say how it does not have a way to plug in an external mic. I am taking videos on this camera and the built in mic is pretty bad. I would love if there was a way to plug in an external mic. But hey, thats what you're going to get for a 200$ camera right.

I moved up to this camera from a $100-level Canon. I like that the controls and instructions are similar. Also I love how lightweight it is -- it does not have AA batteries where the "hump" is -- everything runs off one Lithium battery, saving weight. My main disappointment is that is it not shockingly sharper than the cheaper Canon. But it DOES zoom a lot during both stills AND MOVIES, so those are big pluses. So all in all , quite satisfied, but not blown-away by the photos it takes.

Got camera as gift for wife for Christmas, before wrapping it up checked it out, so she wouldn't get a defective gift. Camera works great, does everything as advertised, couldn't be happier. Then I started looking for the FREE memory card that was supposed to be included when I purchased this camera from Amazon. It wasn't there, checked invoice, no memory card listed. Just went back to my order on the website to check and see if I read it wrong. Nope, this is what it says just below the description of camera "Free SanDisk 16 GB Memory Card and Case, Free SanDisk 16 GB memory card and case when you buy this camera from Amazon.com.Shop now". Nowhere does it say to click here to add Memory card to order, so this time I clicked on the card which took me to another page where I had to select the camera and still the memory card is $12. I'm sorry $12 is not free, unless something is done at checkout. Just disappointed in the deceptive way this is advertised to include a free Memory card by Amazon website.

All I can say is this camera takes amazing shots right out of the box. In auto mode, I took night shots from within my office of a door handle, I was standing almost 30 feet away with the lights off in the room that the picture was taken, the quality of the picture was stunning! We are talking about a camera that slightly zoomed in at approx. 30 feet away, took a picture of a door handle and the lights were off in the room where the door handle was, the picture came out as if the lights were on and the detail and quality of the picture is just amazing! I also uploaded another picture of a pillow, Ralph Lauren, the textures that popped out from this camera were amazing and still in auto mode at an ISO of around 1720 and the best part, it was approx. 11:30 PM at night in very low light. Both the Door Handle picture I uploaded and the Pillow shows just how powerful this $389 camera is. I have owned the 60D and the D7000. I will say this, to get the picture quality of what I just took, out of the box, no settings touched, I would have needed to buy at least one or two more lens. This camera wins hands down! If you are a Professional, go buy the $5,000 camera. I will put this camera side by side to your $5,000 camera all day long! The only difference you will see at the end of the day is maybe a picture that "might" have more color or clarity, big deal...Anything the regular eye cannot see means nothing to a consumer or a girl getting married with wedding pictures. So with this said, if anyone is looking for a solid camera with amazing pictures and solid quality from Canon, buy this Camera from Amazon and do not look back! You will love it! Check out my uploaded photos when they are posted by Amazon. Again, the two pictures, one is of a door handle and the other of a pillow with a horse picture. Just look at the quality of the pictures and the textures. What an "Amazing" camera the SX50 is...! The SX50 is a $1,000 camera inside a $389 body! P.S. The pictures I took were only for test purposes, nothing else. So again, when you see what you get out of the box in "auto mode", you will be amazed!

We have just acquired the SX50 after losing our older SX20 to the TSA at Logan Airport. I haven't had a chance to put it through any paces but expecting it to be similar to the older camera. It is quite bit more compact. 50X will be amazing, 20X at the time was amazing. Didn't come with USB cable or SD card, which might have added $10 for Canon. And missed the warning (if there was one) that you were going to need to order those items separately. A 4GB card will hold/take 1000 pictures. Just ordered two 16GB high speed cards to see if the picture taking speeds up. Some concerns about low light shooting, but don't do much of that. I liked the (4) AA batteries the old one used for convenience, after discovering the Sanyo eneloops. But our experience with LI in other devices has been excellent so not too worried. The price is maybe $150 less than the earlier version and reviews have it performing better than the SX40 in most regards.

I was so excited to buy this camera since I've always been a fan of Canon products. I am not a professional photographer but do use a camera weekly for various projects around the house and also on vacations. Everything worked fine until one day, two months into my ownership, the camera would no longer download pictures to my computer. I contacted Canon and they had me send it to them for repair. Yesterday I received an email informing me that they cannot repair my camera and would be replacing it with either a new or refurbished camera. In early December, I paid over $200 for my camera and I certainly expect a new camera from Canon. I'll update this review when the situation with Canon is resolved. Until then, my rating stays as is.

This camera has been amazing for my purpose as an amateur photography enthusiast wanting a large zoom for wildlife pics. The 50x optical zoom (1200mm equivalent) has been awesome and allowed me to get high quality shots from very long distances. Even the 100x (optical plus digital zoom) has produced some surprisingly usable pictures with good detail. Image stabilization works well enough allow me to take good hand-held pictures at full optical zoom, but a tripod is always preferred if available. On the wide-angle side, the camera zooms out to a very good 24mm equivalent lens. The manual controls are great to have (shutter speed, apeture). The digital level feature on the display was very useful to ensure a level shot. The camera has many other useful features (multiple focusing modes, ability to control the power of the flash, compensation to make pics brighter or darker). But the bottom line of cameras is always the picture quality - and this camera has provided consistently good pics with good exposures, good color balance and good detail. Battery life isn't the greatest - on one occasion I needed to change batteries in a single day, so be sure to buy a spare. Overall this camera has been perfect for me - small enough to to travel with, light enough to take on hikes, versatile lens (24mm - 1200mm), good quality pictures, without the hassle of needing (and lugging around) multiple lenses, and at a price MUCH less than a DSLR. I am very pleased with this purchase and recommend this camera for anyone wanting a big zoom.

Great camera, real value! Took it on a trip and was a little amazed at how far the powershot SX line has come since the SX30 that I replaced. It is a much smarter camera -- detecting faces and sunsets and tracking moving objects, figuring out what to focus on, electronic level. And the zoom power is great, all in a light-weight package. The videos also are great. My one complaint is that this model did not come with the cord to connect to the computer (I was able to use the one from the SX30). That was a little mystifying, why they should drop it from the package. So if you buy this, along with the SD card, you will likely want to get a cable.

After a couple of months of searching and researching I settled on the SX50, apart from the 50x digital zoom, the competitive price played a major role in making this decision.I happen to be traveling through an international airport and I saw it in the duty free at 805$ (!!!), Best Buy price is 429$ so you can see how this had a major influence on my decision.to start with the most negative part which made me give it 4 instead of 5 stars: I have to pop the flash manually, I was surprised that a camera of this caliber has a manual flash not automatic since I can control it through the camera software.Although I read several reviews on Amazon before I purchased it non of them mentioned that.Other than that I would have given it 5 stars, the camera snaps great shots, and I used it while attending the Indianapolis MotoGP race a couple of weeks ago in sport mode where it snaps several shots then you can pick the most beautiful ones.If you are like me; fed up with point & shoot tiny cameras and its time for changing your 2-3 years old one with something more professional and not willing to pay more than 500$ (that was my budget), not willing to go into changing lenses to shoot a few shots now and then, and you can live with the fact that you have to pop the flash manually when needed (the camera will ask you do so if needed) this is the camera of choice.I hope this helps.
