1 month, 550 shots later having read the manual cover to cover (English section ;)Unless you NEEEEEEED to shoot very long exposures, this is simply an unreal camera. I owned a pro photo lab for 30 years and could only dream of a lab IN a camera!!! This does more than I ever thought....I'm coming from a 6 year old X1, but owned the very best film cameras from 35mm to 4x5. I no longer want the weight nor complexity of a full pro SLR (my wife uses an assortment of canons with a 6 month old 7D loaded ($3500 10,000 RPM IS zoom and and and...before and "better" than ultrasonic) as her business camera (PR, aerials etc.) and I certainly have access to these body/lens assortments. I trained her to use them. I'm also a PS pro, to mention just a few things.I see no reason to buy any other system unless you have an ego and pocketbook to match.I have macro shots 1.5 inches from the object that I could not replicate any better with bellows (yeah some of you might know them ;) And other close shots. The manual focus just works. No "auto" system does it all for you...like governments! You work with limitations and MUST both READ the manual AND experiment. I learned in the 1960s and to me this is unreal. Yes, I might be an anachronism as a being, but I am a computer consultant and imaging specialist who is quite current. It is not the perfect color balance in all situations; how many cameras are. The 7D does that with aplomb, but if you need that, get the 7D. I was able to neutralize the color manually, but that takes time, for me a few moments. In most cases it was either dead on or very good. Fix it in Aperture or PS on most difficult shots. The location of some controls has been an issue and I literally walked around the house for days holding it testing to make sure I can handle it in the field. Never go live with untested equipment. You will probably blow the shots. In the end, to give a huge flip out viewer they had to fit the wheel in a tight space on the back, close to the butt of your hand. By practice it has become a none issue.More important items are how to chose the best auto focus and white balance. There are many choices well beyond the very good "auto". Practice, or get a simple point & shoot and stop writing stupid reviews.

I am a photographer...and will admit that due to the film going away to digital I have not had the love for it that I had when I first got into to....I do still love my Minolta 35mm (although it is put away as no one seems to know how to print from film any more) and I love my Sony digital that I use professionally....that said...this camera has made me fall in love with photography all over again....the first few days I just could not put it down....and now I am anxious to get out and see what I can shoot! Thanks Canon for restoring my love of photography! The camera is also light weight, which is awesome for someone like me who has been dealing with pain issues.

Zooooooooooooooooooom even past that. 50 power but you better buy a tripod. Took shots of the Eclipse last night April 14 to 15 and I could zoom it so it OVER-FILLED the screen. Get a programmed flash, 420EX by Canon, and be ready to take some of the finest pictures possible with a point and shoot. I did a lot of research before buying this, and this has the best ratings and actually performs up to those ratings. Just buy it and thank Canon for one of the finest cameras ever. It would take thousands of dollars in lenses to match this with a reflex camera. They have abilities that this can't match, but for the price, this is your camera.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 50x Wide-Angle Optical Image Stabilized ZoomI traded up from the SX40 to improve the zoom for taking bird pictures. The SX50 focuses faster and the shutter release is faster, both important for capturing birds that seem to flit from branch to branch. The center focus option is a big improvement and allows one to minimize focusing on branches and leaves. One typically has to wait till winter to shoot bird pictures to avoid the leaves, but this camera extends that season. I like the fine (F) setting that maximizes the number of pixels. One can use just a little digital zoom without sacraficing image quality. I could go to 75X zoom and still get nice images. The camera seems lighter than the SX40. I walked miles with the camera strap around my neck with no discomfort. Try that with a DSLR with a big zoom AF VR lens and you will quickly switch to this bridge camera for wildlife pictures. The DSLRs can't be beat for landscapes and portraits, so don't toss it just yet.I use a 58mm filter adapter so I can use a polarizing filter to take pictures of water birds (ducks, geese, shore birds). The generic filter adapters have a bayonet type of attachment, not threads. They work, but not perfectly matched for the Canon cameras (SX20, 30, 40, and 50). You need to buy a new lens cap to fit the 58mm filters. The high dynamic range (HDR) works very well, especially for indoor lighting. A nice addition to the SX50.This year, Canon did not include the USB camera-to-computer connector. I guess they assume everyone has the SDHC slot on their computer. The SX40 flash attachment cover is gone. Too bad, it was a nice attachment to keep the flash shoe from snagging on your camera bag. Some people do object to not getting a hard copy of the full instruction manual, but the pdf can be downloaded to your e-reader (e.g., iPod, iPhone, etc.) and taken with you into the field. However, Canon should make hard copies available upon request to those who register their new camera. Good PR.One magazine review complained about chromatic aberration in the SX50. I have tried to post pictures that show this does not always happen. The issue comes up when photographing white birds against a blue background. I didn't see CA in any of my shots.Enough, I highly recommend the SX50 to any wildlife photographers who go into the field to shoot their pictures.

Alright this is a great camera. But it has some PITFALLS that are making me return it in favor of a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200This things main point is ZOOM... PERIOD. A monster 1200mm (50X) lens is on this baby and the optics are impeccable. Add in the DIGIC 5 processor and digital zoom and you have 200X of usable zoom. an image taken at 200X is quite usable.Manual mode on this camera is plain FUN. You even get control over the power of the flash, something I have never seen in another camera. Is this thing a performer in low light, i have reservations. Testing it against my Sony DSC-HX100V the HX100V beats the hell out of this camera because it does not limit its ISO to 80 in shutter speeds longer than 1 second. This is an arbitrary limit, it has nothing to do with what the camera CAN technically do its what canon wants you doing with their equipment. The camera has incredibly bad video encoding which results in you toting 4GB for 30 minutes of 720p HD video where in my Sony DSC-HX100V I can record easily double that, thanks to it using AVCHD codecs. This camera like the Sony has the dumb 30 minute video limit because of European Union tax on 'camcorders' so to avoid that tax they limit it's video recording. Can these limitations be avoided, yes they can by using a firmware hack kit called CHDK (Google it and get to know it, it's not supported on the SX50 yet an alpha release is in testing)So is this camera perfect, no. Is this camera probably the best you can get it's price range, more than likely a yes. (Mind you that 50x lens alone on a DSLR will cost you $100k) I got 400k dollars in lenses for 400 dollars.Knocking a star off for the arbitrary limitations on here, Canon you know that there is no camcorder tax in the united states. Give us a USA firmware. and another star for the noisy zoom and clicky lens stabilization and poor auto focus. So do I recommend buying this camera..If you are after LOTS of zoom and don't really care about attaching filters to your camera and extending the optical abilities, don't need to record lots of video, don't care if your AF lamp can light a whole room and dont care that much about battery life. fineBut in retrospect the Panasonic FZ200 has a whopping 540 shots per battery.3 batteries = 1540 shots.this thing3 batteries = 1000 shots or so.

I primarily use a Sony a77 and a Panasonic G5 for long range wildlife photography, locally and in the National Parks. The longest manageable lens I have is a Pany 100-300mm, 600mm equivalent. I was posting on several forums, asking about long zoom options and got lots of suggestions,..... all for very heavy and expensive lenses that would give me 750mm reach. One member suggested,..."try the Canon SX50, you might be surprised at the results."Well folks, I did try it and I was pleasantly surprised. I've used the SX50 almost daily, side by side with my Sony and Panasonic. The lens at 1200mm optical zoom is amazing, not only for reach but also for clarity. Even 2X digital zoom (2400mm) is very, very good. It's hard to tell it's digital zoom. All this for less than half the price of a 750mm option for my other cameras. It's hard to even imagine the power of this lens until you've seen it. It's my go to camera for distant birds and wildlife.Although I rate this camera a 5, that is exclusively for the lens. It is not the best all around camera in it's class. For kids' sports, for example, it comes up short in the continuous shooting modes. It does not have in camera panorama or high speed high def video like others in it's class. The image quality is better than any of the other small sensor cameras I've used. The long reach and high image quality will make this a camera that most people will enjoy. When discussed on forums, a frequent comment, which I share is,....."This is the most fun camera I've ever had!"Jack

All I can say is this camera takes amazing shots right out of the box. In auto mode, I took night shots from within my office of a door handle, I was standing almost 30 feet away with the lights off in the room that the picture was taken, the quality of the picture was stunning! We are talking about a camera that slightly zoomed in at approx. 30 feet away, took a picture of a door handle and the lights were off in the room where the door handle was, the picture came out as if the lights were on and the detail and quality of the picture is just amazing! I also uploaded another picture of a pillow, Ralph Lauren, the textures that popped out from this camera were amazing and still in auto mode at an ISO of around 1720 and the best part, it was approx. 11:30 PM at night in very low light. Both the Door Handle picture I uploaded and the Pillow shows just how powerful this $389 camera is. I have owned the 60D and the D7000. I will say this, to get the picture quality of what I just took, out of the box, no settings touched, I would have needed to buy at least one or two more lens. This camera wins hands down! If you are a Professional, go buy the $5,000 camera. I will put this camera side by side to your $5,000 camera all day long! The only difference you will see at the end of the day is maybe a picture that "might" have more color or clarity, big deal...Anything the regular eye cannot see means nothing to a consumer or a girl getting married with wedding pictures. So with this said, if anyone is looking for a solid camera with amazing pictures and solid quality from Canon, buy this Camera from Amazon and do not look back! You will love it! Check out my uploaded photos when they are posted by Amazon. Again, the two pictures, one is of a door handle and the other of a pillow with a horse picture. Just look at the quality of the pictures and the textures. What an "Amazing" camera the SX50 is...! The SX50 is a $1,000 camera inside a $389 body! P.S. The pictures I took were only for test purposes, nothing else. So again, when you see what you get out of the box in "auto mode", you will be amazed!

This camera has been amazing for my purpose as an amateur photography enthusiast wanting a large zoom for wildlife pics. The 50x optical zoom (1200mm equivalent) has been awesome and allowed me to get high quality shots from very long distances. Even the 100x (optical plus digital zoom) has produced some surprisingly usable pictures with good detail. Image stabilization works well enough allow me to take good hand-held pictures at full optical zoom, but a tripod is always preferred if available. On the wide-angle side, the camera zooms out to a very good 24mm equivalent lens. The manual controls are great to have (shutter speed, apeture). The digital level feature on the display was very useful to ensure a level shot. The camera has many other useful features (multiple focusing modes, ability to control the power of the flash, compensation to make pics brighter or darker). But the bottom line of cameras is always the picture quality - and this camera has provided consistently good pics with good exposures, good color balance and good detail. Battery life isn't the greatest - on one occasion I needed to change batteries in a single day, so be sure to buy a spare. Overall this camera has been perfect for me - small enough to to travel with, light enough to take on hikes, versatile lens (24mm - 1200mm), good quality pictures, without the hassle of needing (and lugging around) multiple lenses, and at a price MUCH less than a DSLR. I am very pleased with this purchase and recommend this camera for anyone wanting a big zoom.

Great camera, real value! Took it on a trip and was a little amazed at how far the powershot SX line has come since the SX30 that I replaced. It is a much smarter camera -- detecting faces and sunsets and tracking moving objects, figuring out what to focus on, electronic level. And the zoom power is great, all in a light-weight package. The videos also are great. My one complaint is that this model did not come with the cord to connect to the computer (I was able to use the one from the SX30). That was a little mystifying, why they should drop it from the package. So if you buy this, along with the SD card, you will likely want to get a cable.

I have other heavy duty camera but I want to look for a universally travel camera and this is great for the purpose. It takes sharp photos, especially with distance. The Image Stabilizer on this camera works even better than that of the expensive camera. The pictures came out sharper than I thought it would, and it zooms further than any other cameras of its kind. Totally recommend this camera for those reasons.

My wife and I purchased this to have a good camera for taking pics of our newborn son. We have been so pleased with it. The zoom is absolutely incredible. I'm sure there are many stronger and better quality cameras out there for the professionals, but for a family at home...this is awesome...especially for around $200! Good quality video as well. We are excited every time we upload pics to the computer to see how clear and beautiful the images of our boy are! Also, we bought extra batteries from this amazon listing:B008TX0RC6The batteries were a good price and they actually last longer than the factory canon battery. Just a little food for thought! Also, in terms of aesthetics...the camera is very nice looking and built well. The neck strap is nice, and the camera fits very comfortably in your hands. Light weight! Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

I've used various settings on this camera, to no avail. I either need a tripod to take clear images or I must limit myself to landscape photography, and even those images aren't sharp. I have owned several earlier versions of this camera and was satisfied. It's better to revert to a camera with less zoom and MP than to deal with soft, fuzzy images. A great disappointment.

This is my third camera in the Canon PowerShot line, I also have the S2IS and SX10IS.What's improved:- The HD video is good.- The Auto mode at least can actually take indoor pictures with the on-board flash worth having--neither of the earlier models could.- The super zoom and IS are quite good. 50x zoom is startling far out there.- The swing out display is clearly better. What's not:- The high speed video modes, 120fps(640x480) and 240fps(320x240), are so low resolution as to be nearly worthless.- The Electronic View Finder(EVF) is terrible--far worse than the SX10IS. It's so bad I thought I had a defective camera until I went and checked another one at a store. This alone is enough to knock it down to 3 stars. If it had the same EVF as the SX10IS, I'd love it.

I shoot professionally with a Canon 7d, mostly, I'm a wide angle photographer. I bought primarily this for my wife, although with the thought that I'd use it now and then as well. We just moved near Klamath Lake, OR, one of the best birding locations anywhere, so the 1200mm equivalent telephoto very much played in our decision. In testing/learning about the camera, I've found that the stabilization works very well. I've gotten some very sharp images of a bald eagle feeding on a fish, from 150', 1200mm @ 1/160th ! The images over the entire range of the zoom seem quite a bit better than I expected. I may have to buy a 2nd one, just for the telephoto, a quality long lens for my 7d is 4-5 times as expensive, weighs a ton, and no way can I justify it.The downsides to the camera;1. It tends to clip highlights, shooting RAW files helps a lot to recover them.2. The buttons on the back are almost impossible not to bump while holding/carrying the camera, I wish they took a firmer pressure/click to activate.3. The menus and the various ways they are accessed are quite confusing, with many things grayed out or active, depending on whether you are shooting jpg or jpg + RAW and also depending on what mode you are in. Having the 200+ page manual only as a PDF file doesn't help matters.Although somewhat of a pain, these things don't stop me from giving it 5 stars, it's an amazing camera that, even on full auto, takes exceptional photos.Steve

If you want a camera to capture a steady picture of your kid on stage, or in a marching band, and you're standing far away from the action, this is it. Birding and wildlife enthusiasts will love this camera. The image stabilization is top notch. For comparison, I own a pair of Celestron 20x binoculars. I have to hold it extremely steady to see the sky, and even then there is a fair amount of shake. With the SX 50, I was able to photograph the moon, craters and all, with simple handholding. I didn't even brace myself.I can see this being my every day camera, which I use on vacation or when visiting an interesting spot. What this isn't, is a camera that can help you with your photographic pursuits. Some drawbacks are that sharpness is lost at higher ISO levels starting as early as 1600. if you look closely on long zoom photos, some objects have a purple fringe. And the lens has a limited aperture range. You cannot take wide-aperture portrait photos that blur the background, as you can with an SLR. I wasn't very pleased with low-light performance when compared with my four year old Sony Alpha DSLR.This camera makes a great complement to a DSLR. With a DSLR you get a bigger sensor, larger aperture and finer control. With this, you get the zoom, built-in image stabilization, and something you can carry around more easily.Update: After a couple months of owning this, I still like it. Its my go-to camera. There are a few caveats though... the first is that in low light, this does not even come close to even an APS-C DSLR. The size of the sensor on this is much smaller, and there is correspondingly a lot of noise at low light/high ISO. Another thing is that ISO 6400 is a disappointment. I love to take pictures in available light, and to get a better shutter speed, ratchet up the ISO. When I go all the way to 6400, the pictures don't come out very good. The noise reduction within the camera removes a lot of detail. The second caveat is that the range of apertures is fairly limited (3.4 through 8, IIRC). Reduces the number of creative things you can do with this camera, but of course it opens up many other possibilities.

This camera has amazed me with the quality shots it takes. I have had several DSLR's both Canon and Nikon and this camera actually competes in photo quality. Though I haven't been able to try all the features yet the pictures I have taken have been very sharp and able to be cropped quite a bit with little if any deterioration. I mainly got this camera for the zoom ability as most of my shooting involves birds and wildlife and this amount of zoom with a DSLR would cost thousands. I can't wait to get out and test this camera to the fullest but mother nature is stopping me right now. Bottom line...Canon rules both in DSLR and point and shoots period and Amazon rules with pricing and shipping.

It takes good pictures, very good, in fact. Especially in strong light.I've been a Canon user for many years. My main cameras are the 5D Mk III and the 7D. I wanted a light camera to carry around when I didn't want to carry the heavy cameras and lens. This camera meets the spec. In bright light, great pictures. So why not five stars?Issues: Be very careful to control your right thumb when taking pictures. If you so much as touch the control nob on the right back of the camera you can accidentally change every setting, including starting the timed shutter. It would be nice if Canon make this much less sensitive. Forget speedy multiple picture taking in the single shot mode. Yep, if you think in advance you can set to multiple exposures but don't assume the camera stops being "busy" (and cannot shoot) anywhere near what a DSLR Canon can do, or even the GS12. Be careful not to review pictures when you are trying to act with some speed. You cannot switch from reviewing prior shots to taking a new picture in less than four or five seconds. The camera does not switch quickly. ISO at 3200 is a nice addition but it takes terrible pictures. I use Photoshop Lightroom 4 which has a pretty good noise reduction function, but it cannot fix the noise at 3200 without blurring the pictures. Even ISO 1600 is a push to fix in Lightroom. I'd call images at these ISO speeds borderline unacceptable. The camera could really, really use a manual or complete quick start guide. I've used Canons for years but it takes too long to figure this camera out.On the plus side, in good light and with a steady hand, the zoom is amazing.

I was tired of walking around with a camera and bag full of glass worth thousands of dollars. My former camera was the Canon 5D MK II and a beautiful camera it was. Had lots of L class lenses. In short, I was insured to the hilt. This camera does everything my 5D Mk II could do except bulb shots, a technique which I used perhaps twice in three years. The zoom on this camera is amazing. I was never a big fan of auto focus but with this camera it is quick and accurate.I love small details and with the zoom on this camera and its ability to shoot in relatively low light, I can capture all sorts of oblique scenes that would have escaped me in the past as I would have had to get my camera out of my bag, unscrew a variety of caps, attach the appropriate lens, remove the lens cap, set the shot, focus, find and frame the subject... and the light has changed or the moment is gone. Another missed opportunity. That doesn't happen much anymore. Now I see it, grab camera, remove pinch lens cap, shoot.Shoots HD and SD video. The image stabilization is a whole other topic but suffice to say it is a quantum leap for me and coming from the 5D, which had no stabilization at all, the SX50 is absolutely mind blowing.I didn't intend to write a huge review but wanted to highlight that in this reviewers opinion, the Canon SX50 is as good as the Canon 5D Mark II. Better in some regards.Yes, it doesn't have the prestige of a $2500 camera. But wherein lies the prestige? All of the quality is there along with the functionality. If your thinking of ditching your expensive DSLR kit, this is the camera to look at. It won't impress your friends, but you will be impressed and sometimes amazed with the images you capture.

Be prepared to be disappointed if you own a DSLR and are used to that quality. I own a T3i and have always taken amazing shots in all sorts of settings. Compared to that the IQ of this camera is nowhere near close. I mainly purchased it because I could not afford Canon's 400mm zoom lenses plus another $500 for 2X tele-converter. I knew I was going to sacrifice Image Quality but not to this extent. The EVF is absolutely horrible. I personally prefer EVF especially while zooming as it is hard to use LCD. If you plan to use it exclusively for zooming and taking acceptable shots which otherwise you had no chance to capture then this camera is not bad. Keep your expectations low and avoid comparison with DSLR features and shots.Having used this Camera for one more week I can say it does take good pictures in bright sunlight. Even if the picture looks horrible in the EVF preview, they look good on the LCD/computer screen once downloaded. The Zoom and Auto-focus speed are great. The battery life is mediocre. The zoom motor and LCD/EVF do consume lot of battery. I got only 100 shots. I ordered a spare battery as a back up. Also ordered 58 mm adapter as I personally prefer using filters and hoods.

I bought this camera as a replacement for my Panasonic Lumix FZ35, which I loved until recently. The colors seem to have shifted to dingy from beautiful. We were taking a trip to Patagonia and I wanted good pics. And I got them.I have been a SLR person since the 70's, but as I get older and travel more I was done with large cameras and interchangeable lenses. But long for the end results. I think I've found a great camera that weighs just 1.5 pounds and has amazing color.I'm past wanting to adjust the aperature and speed. This camera on auto is perfect if you want really good pics with more than a little point and shoot. I've gotten great raves from my friends on the photos from Patagonia and the Straights of Maggellan.I used mainly the eyepiece viewfinder, the digital display is beautiful on the fold out viewfinder, but a little awkward. I think I probably got better battery life as well by not using it much. I did use it for awkward angles as it tilts and swivels great. But again in super bright sun the eyepiece is best. The burst shots allowed me to get some really good pics of dolphins surfacing, and birds in flight, very fast. Only a few times did I go to the menu to change settings. These cameras have come so far so fast it's amazing. It offers way more control than the average person would ever want or need. The 50X lens was so much better than I would have ever imagined. I bought it from Amazon thinking "if this isn't what I want , it's going back". It's a keeper. My only wish is that it was a little lighter, but for what you have it's totally worth lugging around and extra pound and a half.I wish I could be a techincal as some of the other reviews, but again, I'm past that. I'm going to be toting it around Asia in a few weeks, knowing that I'll come home with greats pics. I did by an extra battery. Both fit nicely in my purse while we tour around effortlessly.
