I love the zoom on this camera, which is unbeatable, but it has a hard time getting a really sharp focus in Auto mode.For a camera at this price range $370, I expected a sharper focus than my iphone 5.If I figure out how to take better pictures on manual mode, I will consider upgrading my rating to 5 stars.I have seen some amazing pictures posted on Facebook taken by this camera, and I am still hopeful that it is the user and not the camera that is at fault.

I waited as long as I could to buy the SX50HS at a local store due to the desire to have hands on prior to the purchase. I went to Yellowstone in early October 2012. I took about 1000 pictures and had about a dozen duds; even shooting through the windshield, giving less than normal time for focusing, and taking pictures at 55 mph.I used it for the first two days prior to recharging. I did not have a problem of running out of battery. However, I have ordered a spare battery after the trip. The pictures are incredible.I have used a SX20 at work for a few years - so the controls were very familiar. I mostly stayed with auto, but I do use manual controls as needed.The 50 power zoom was incredible. It was rarely hard to hold still. Most of the time I would just center the item, trust the camera, and click. The camera took care of me! I also had to pull in the zoom once in a while to get the camera to refocus. This was mostly on areas such as the mudpits, which don't have defined edges or contrast. Almost all of these shots came out wonderful.The HD video is exceptional for a camera - not quite as good as a good video camcorder. (better than my old 8mm video camcorder). The pictures taken from the video are surprisingly good. I took about 30 minutes of video.I'm glad I waited. 50x is worth it! I was amazed at how often the zoom was maxed out. I did not have any issues with lack of light. Image Stabilization was very capable.All cameras of this type should have this cameras vari-angle style LCD.Only minor dissapointment = Viewfinder - Even with diopter adjustment is not as good as the viewfinder on my old A620 (Canon 5 MP camera).

This camera really does deserve a five star, but my heart was really set on an SLR and so I ended up returning this for that reason only. An SLR just has a solid feel and crispness to photos that this little guy doesn't have. Still, this thing can zoom like no other. I literally can see details of the craters on the full moon, and got details of the little faces of seals and bears from a distance. You can work on all of your Manual settings. A great camera and light and handy for running around. Just not an SLR...which they never claimed to be. Recommended!

I mainly bought this camera for it's long zoom feature and was excited to use it to compliment my DSLR. Unfortunately, I can never get a good picture out of this camera. Maybe it's just me since I'm used to seeing my DSLR shots, and this is not a DSLR, but nevertheless the image quality is very disappointing for $400. Don't expect to use the zoom and get good quality pics. The more you zoom in the worst it will get, even for optical zoom. They look like they were taken with an old cell phone camera from 10 years ago. Even zoomed out, most shots are slightly blurry. Out of 30 pictures taken, maybe 2 are worth saving. I do like the small physical size, good build quality and feel of the camera, but the image quality is were it matters most, and for me I was disappointed in this model and will be sticking with my DSLR. If you are considering this I would spend just a little bit more and get a DSLR.

I have the professional Canon 5D Mark 2 camera with all the lenses, flash filters and everything else, but I needed a small camera for riding my motorcycle to events. After researching I settled on the Canon PowerShot SX510 HS, which I am glad I did. The first weekend I took over 300 photographs and I am extremely happy with this camera. I was really surprised at how small it is but it does take a nice 12 meg picture. For the price, I can't imagine using anything else.

I bought this camera listed as brand new unpackaged. but the camera box seemed to be previosuly openned and camera was broken. Actually I am outside the us. I never have had this kind when buying directly from amazon, so I hope they gave me a solution for this issue. If amazon give me a solution I will change this review.Update at 05/Mar/2013I received the new camera, Amazon has an excelent customer support, but it took about an extra month in order to ship it to my country.I oppened the new camera box(scared) and noticed that this camera have a clicking sound inside when moving it, but luckily this is not brokem. I took several pictures inside my office.I must say i was expecting much more from it. Summarizing:PROS: very fast for taking and saving pics large zoom for distant objects nice autofocus while zooming(not amazing but nice) amazing super macro while zoomed outCONS: very small view finder Cant focus super macro when zoomed(My prev Fuji could at full zoom) Feels and look very fragile Colors in the camera are true color but when watching the pics taken on the PC, the color is not the same cant really atach lenses or filtersOverall its a good camera, but I would have bought another Fuji.

The "manual" it comes with is a joke, offers NO help whatsoever on the settings, which you'll be forced to spend hours looking for online in order to actually use this piece of crap.Despite turning OFF face tracking and Subject Tracking it still focuses on 1 area of the screen (bottom left, top right, bottom middle)- Literally EVERYTHING Except the CENTER OF the dat gum screen!!!) and then when you take the photo, your subject is Out of focus and the background/sides are in focus.Basically, if you're buying this camera for scenery shots it's great. If you're buying it to photograph kids, bugs, wildlife, anything with a pulse, forget it- run the other direction because you'll spend more time deleting crap photos than you will getting shots you can use. I took 38 photos on Auto of my kids playing with a lion cub, literally only ONE came out usable.HATE HATE HATE this Piece of Crap, but unfortunately, dh threw out the box. He should've kept the box and threw out the damn camera! Thank God I still have my SLR to rely on.

I'm a photographer, so I have 3 DSLR's at my disposal. But there's times I just want to grab and go. Don't want to be bother with changing my lens, like when I'm at the zoo and want a close up of an animal but then want to take a close up of my kids too. Generally not possible with the same lens. This is perfect. The color and speed are great. Before I got it, I had recommended it to a friend, then I bought it 3 weeks later. LOVE IT! You should buy one too!

are the 50x zoom and the digital zoom capabilities...but the image quality more than suffers at those higher levels. I was not thrilled with this camera. Having owned and used the SX40 extensively, I found that the low-light focusing of this SX50 leaves a lot to be desired. The camera, in anything less than daylight conditions, focuses very slowly or not at all though focus in good light is readily achieved and appears fairly speedy and accurate. Essentially, this is just a decent good light/bright light camera and should be viewed as such.The auto white balance is horrendous which necessitates the need to use one of the presets or use a custom WB setting. Image quality is really just so-so and nothing over 400 ISO is good for anything but small prints, email, or the web. Smearing, noise and loss of detail begins at 400 ISO and quickly degrades afterwards. Because the lens is not very fast, you'll find the camera defaulting to higher ISO levels more often than not with mediocre results at best.I did not check the video capabilities. The EVF is needed in many extremely sunny and bright daylight situations, but its low resolution and smearing makes it almost more of a hassle than the LCD. The diopter adjustment is poorly implemented, difficult to adjust, and doesn't remain at the chosen setting.This is not, in my opinion, an everyday camera; however it does fill the niche for birders, wildlife photographers, etc. The zoom is remarkable; however, it comes at a cost and unless you are a affirmed "zoom-head," your money can be better spent with another Canon, Nikon, or Fuji.

The photos are not very good quality. My old kodak is just as good. I went to return this camera, but was 2 days past the return date when I went to print out the return slip. Very disappointed there was no way to even try to return it, no way to contact seller after the 30 days.

Great camera. Love the wireless feature to download pic to my iPad. The thing I don't much like is that it's extremely difficult to get a sharp picture when using the high zoom. Even with a tripod I have difficulties focusing it. Other than that, it's easy enough to use.

I'm loving the pictures I get with this camera. The 50X is great for nature shots but with the additional digital zoom you can get up to 200X. Even taking hand held shots of moving birds at 200X they are in focus. I'm still getting to know some of the more advanced capabilities of this camera, but so far I think it's a winner! Do be aware though that in order to download the user manual, you have to buy an extra USB cable (around $18). Also, the rechargeable battery life seems a little short so you will need an extra.

Don't know why they even bothered putting an optical viewfinder on this camera, it is so bad. It's very small and difficult to use. That's doubly bad for me because I prefer to use a viewfinder, especially outside, because it's nearly impossible to see a LCD out in the bright light. They put good viewfinders on their more expensive models so I don't understand. There's one more thing. They put the self timer on the right of the selection wheel,right where your thumb rest, so that you accidentally turn it on constantly; very irritating. Has Canon been bought out by somebody? I've never seen them do this kind of thoughtless engineering. And that's really too bad. It has all the zoom you will ever need. With 1200 mm optical, I don't even use the digital zoom. The images are very sharp. But the viewfinder blows it.

I've had this camera now for about 9 months. I have taken about 1000 pictures, several videos and I can not find fault with anything. The videos in low light conditions are better than I had hoped for. The automatic setting works well when there isn't time for manual settings. Battery life is good, but I bought an extra one so I don't worry about losing shots when away from home. It's lightweight so it's easy to carry and use for long periods of time. I would recommend this camera for anyone needing up to 50X optical zoom.

I was expecting much more from this camera in the way of picture quality. There are times when the only mode you can shoot in is automatic. In this mode, it is very difficult to get clear, crisp images, especially when conditions are less than ideal.

I don't understand why no one has run into problems with the lens focusing system. I am on my 3rd one of these and the focus is still soft. Hair is not that distinct unless I very strongly sharpen the images in post production software. The first one was terrible, the 2nd and 3rd so-so, but softer than my previous 2 digital cameras [a Lunix LZ5 and an Sony H20]. And I am using either "P" mode or "Tv" mode and setting the focus to spot mode.It does produce rather low noise images at ISO 400 and even 600. But I can't get anything really sharp.My guess is the quality control is bad... or few of these 200 plus reviewers here actually look at images at 100 percent.I am reluctantly going to the more expensive Lumix F200 even though i can barely afford it.

I have had the camera for less than a week.. I read and read all I could on this camera (mostly reviews on Amazon etc)... yes I noticed the not great quality of the night photos using ALL of the settings too! But I can live with this because I do not take a LOT of night shots.. the daytime pix are STUNNING..and I will keep the camera. The videos and quality of them are good too. No I do NOT like the battery life quality.. There is an old saying about taking a good product that WORKS and substituting it with a product that SOUNDS good! My SX5 and SX20 worked fine on 4 easy to find and LONG LASTING rechargeable AA batteries! Now we have a very SHORT life lithium NB-10L which has a very low lasting capability! I am VERY disappointed in this. I shoot a LOT of music videos and so on.. If I had NOT got a spare battery when I got the camera I would have been SOL.. GET at least ONE and maybe TWO spare batteries if you plan on doing a lot of photos.. and recharge the battery after EACH photo session.. The long lens is very nice and worth the price for the camera... If I had it to do over I MIGHT have got a different one but I am going to make this one work- and use the SX5 and SX20 for stuff they do best..

I got this camera because of its zoom and size, and to be honest I was quite skeptical. I have a DSLR camera and I'm used to its quality. I just wanted something lighter with an incorporated zoom since a DSLR and its huge lenses are a lot to carry on long hikes.Well I have to say this little camera is AMAZING! Much more than I expected, excellent quality of long distance pictures. It has an image stabilizer or someting like it since pictures are SO sharp no matter how far you are from the objective.I absolutelly recommend this camera!

I have owned every version of the powershot series. I debated a long time before buying this model. I read many reviews both good and bad. I bought the camera with the idea that if I did not like it, I would ship it back. I have not been disappointed. Of course the zoom is phenomenal. I like taking pictures of the moon and they are just brilliant. It focuses much faster than the sx40, the image stabilizer is very effective, works very good in low light and the size and weight is just perfect. One thing I really like is the rechargeable battery. The lithium battery is a plus. The sx50 is a great camera.

I have had the SX30,the SX40,and now the SX50. I use it mainly when birding with binoculars and spotting scope on a tripod and do not want to carry my DSLR gear as well.For this use the Sports mode works surprisingly well. Lillian Stokes has on her Web site some very good pictures and her tips would be useful to beginners with this camera who are into birding or other wildlife.Having RAW was selling point for me although CKDK did well on the SX40.The viewfinder could be better but do not forget to use the diopter setting to the left of of it to get the best result.The lens is slightly different in size from the SX40. See Lensmate if you want an adapter that will fit well.All told the zoom is the thing but this is a fun camera to use for most anything realizing it is not a DSLR

I bought this camera for my wife for Christmas after looking at just about everything else out there, including DSLRs. It was the only one with a 50X optical zoom, something that will really facilitate her desire to take wildlife shots that she can later paint. We also had very good experience with her previous Canon point and shoot and the user reviews were excellent. We haven't been disappointed. In fact, we're amazed. We took it to the butterfly grove nearby and we could get the same view as the large spotting scopes they set up and take excellent pictures and movies. This thing is awesome and takes astounding photos just in automatic mode. We're learning all the other features which will enhance our picture taking ability. I'm thinking of getting one for myself too to replace my old SLR Nikon and Samsung camcorder. I can't even imagine why one would buy a DSLR and carry all those lenses around and then a camcorder too. This camera pretty much does it all, at least for the serious amateur.

I can take super clear photos and videos and the zoom is awesome 50x optical 200x digital, 200x it does blur out but thats ok I can still take pictures just by guessing, I even take pictures at night time with the flash, I been taking pictures of the planes from the Sun N' Fun Fly-in even though they are like 3 miles high I think it is, I still take pictures and when I zoom in I can read the writing on the planes, also I took a photo of a christmas chimney thats in my neighbors front yard I was like half a block away and you could read what was on the chimney oh yeah I even took a picture of a bird sitting on my fence from the same place I couldn't see the bird with my own eyes I was far away

My wife asked me to help her search for a new camera. Before the SX50 HS we tried the Nikon P510, the Fujifilm HS30EXR, the Panasonic FZ200, and the Canon SX40 HS. The others are all nice cameras, but overall, for the money, features, picture quality, and ergonomics, the prize went to the SX50 HS.I was concerned about the slower lense speed of the SX50 HS, but in repeated test pics taken with all five cameras, this unit provided pics as good or better than the rest.Granted, the manual zoom on the HS30EXR is really nice and the F2.8 aperature capability across the entire zoom range on the FZ200 will be an advantage in certain low-light situations, but we haven't encountered any situation in a month's worth of testing that we couldn't get a great picture with the SX50 HS. And while I think all five cameras give nice pictures in most of the scenarios we shoot in, when comparing pics, we found the image quality from the SX50 HS to be better across the board--especially when cropping and enlarging.I'm not putting any of the other cameras down--any one of them will serve a broad range of customers very well. We just think that across the board, the SX50 HS is the best for our needs.

I was looking for a small camera with a good zoom lens. Read all the reviews, and decided on this one. The zoom is so good that holding it by hand is tuff at full zoom. I use a mono-pod and it helps a lot. Its low light performance is only fair at best, like most small sensor cameras. Its auto focus is fast and exact. Image quality is very good. Battery life is also very good. Movie mode is good and like shooting stills wile its recording video. Wide angle (24mm) is not the best but theprice for a 1200mm tele-photo lens. All in all very happy.

have already taken some great shots with the camera. Zoom is great even though you really need a pod at max optical zoom. Battery life a little short but two batteries solves that issue. Video clarity and audio pickup are great.

It is about $100 more than the Canon PowerShot SX500 (16.0 MP Digital Camera with 30x Wide-Angle), but worth every penny. I got the SX500, but ----- after going back & forth & reading the reviews of both these cameras I was confused. The SX50 has an optical view finder which is helpful in the bright sunshine. The LCD view finder on the SX 50 is much better as you can pop it out & twist it to see it better. Also the SX50 is more responsive. You can move on to the next shot quicker. I returned my SX500 and got the SX50 and I am not sorry in the least.I am still learning on this thing & likely I will never take advantage of all it's features, but maybe..... I certainly enjoy this cameras features.

We have an older version of this camera and have loved it. This one the buttons on the right side of the camera are too touch sensitive and I have repeatly hit the timer button or the REC button when trying to take a regular picture and have missed the picture opportunity. Sending it back.

I love this zoom, it is incredible, and I'm going to cry a little when I return this camera! However, after trying all of the modes, I'm not getting quality portraits.I envisioned a camera that would take great family shots and also feature my little soccer player without having to lug a monster lens around. The zoom is amazing. I could not be more impressed with it. Brilliant, clear, detailed shots of animals at the zoo using the zoom. (Check out my picture of a swan with water droplets on her feathers.)Sadly, only a few family/portraits came out in the quality I expect.Also, outdoor/sunny shots lost details in the whites. I have a white dog and she glows in every picture even when sitting still. It is not a motion/blur. I have also noticed a purple haze between high contrast areas. However, I am happy to report the flash is adequate and did not wash out my subjects.Overall, If I could afford to keep this just for the zoom and to use for sports, I would.

There are no limitations with the Canon SX-50. Add an adapter to the lens to accommodate a UV Haze filter to protect the lens, then add an 8-star filter for effects or a polarization filter for dramatic blue skies. Then add a screw or snap on hood and 58 mm lens cap. The remote control is really great and an external flash just puts icing on the cake. This is top of the line without going to an SLR. The zoom is incredible.The only misses of this camera is, I wish it at a wider and smaller aperture, a little bit longer exposure capability and an eye cup for the viewfinder.I highly recommend this camera to anyone who just doesn't wants all the bells and whistles of a SLR.

I purchased this camera to replace a older PowerShot SX10 that I had for a few years. The zoom is fantastic! The only thing I wasn't keen on was going back to a battery pack instead of rechargeable AA batteries. I purchased an extra Canon battery to ensure I always had power.

The SX50 HS is the third PowerShot camera I've purchased after the S3 and SX10 and it is by far the best Canon megazoom camera yet. I've taken over 700 photos so far and I'm please with both the quality of the images and the ease of operation.I have yet to try out all its features but I'm very impressed with the detail found within 40 - 50X when shooting. However, I strongly advise using a tripod when shooting at the maximum focal range due to the extreme sensitivity of the camera's stabilization features. It would be interesting to take shots with a Panasonic FZ200 to see how it composes images with the f2.8 aperture available but I definitely have no regrets in purchasing the Canon. I've been a big fan of Canon since my younger days with a Canon A-1 35mm camera (which I still have) and am glad that the company is still innovating great products for amateur photo enthusiasts like myself.

I bought this for my wife, as my son had stepped on our older digital camera that didn't have a viewfinder. She really wanted a camera that had a viewfinder. I started looked at digital SLR's and I know she wasn't about to start adding extra lenses, etc...This camera has everything she needed.

I bought this camera for my wife because of the 50x optical zoom. I've been using SLR's & DSLR's for the past 40 years and didn't think a point & shoot could ever measure up. I couldn't have been more wrong. This camera is amazing. The pictures are consistently clear and crisp, and the colors are beautiful. The image stabilization works great, producing sharp images at 50x. It supports RAW images and is so very easy to use. I'd rate this camera 10 stars if it were possible.

This camera is not a megabuck Professional Camera nor does it sport a $10,000.00 L-Series Lens. But.......I can tell you that this little camera does a great job in a lot of shooting situations that you cannot do with the large and heavy Pro Equipment without a hassle... This little guy will make you smile when you see just what it can do, and in most cases you don't have to go in deep debt to buy it. You can sleep better at night knowing that you spent under $429.00 and are able to shoot stablized pictures from wide angle to faraway telephoto shots with good quality. I can recommend this camera to anyone... Don't forget that this camera also shoots High Definition Video if you like to do that....

This Canon camera is just Great and is one of the best all around all occasion cameras that I have ever owned. I take about 12,000 photos a year and performance is very important as well as battery life. Everything from the very closeup to using the 50 time zoom come out.

I brought this camera to a trip in the rainforst. On the last day of the trip the camera displayed a "lens failure" error and was useless. When it did work, I really liked the camera and the 800 pictures it took.

I recently upgraded from the SX30 for the greater zoom, and also bought a T3i DSLR. I wasn't crazy about the SX30 because of some yellow tint in some photos, which I now realize was probably due to white balance issues.So let's talk about zoom. I compared the zoom on this little baby to my DSLR with a 100-400 mm DSLR lens with a 2 x extender, about $2,000 worth of lenses. Well, I found the SX50 actually took a sharper picture, and this is in a very low light environment.I could not be more impressed. Go Canon! It makes me wonder why I bothered investing thousands of dollars into my DSLR and associated lenses.

I gave this high ratings at this point because it is everything they promise in the specifications. I'm not a practicing photo professional and didn't give it a bench test or anything like that. I just know I like it. I didn't give it 5 stars because I firmly believe NOTHING is absolutely perfect!It's comfortable in my hands, well-balanced, convenient controls, good looking, the zoom is fantastic (love the stabilztion control for that!), and the macro capabilities are superb.I have used it mostly on AUTO so far, pretty much like a point and shoot, and it does a great job every time.I do wish it had a threaded filter mount on the lens though. I'd like to keep a UV filter on there to protect the lens and I'm a big fan of what a polarizing filter can do for color saturation and reflection elimination.
