I bought this printer last year and was excited in the begining because of the network feature. My excitement faded away when I started using this printer. Printer quality is ok even if you use the best quality option.

I bought this new, over 3yrs ago, for around $69, and it has served me quite well. I don't need to do a great deal of faxing, but it does the job, prints fine (I don't use it to print pics), copies great, & scans ok, too. I order replacement ink from a third party company, saving almost 80% from the retail cost, and it's been fine, too. All in all, I couldn't much ask for anything more. If I did a tremendous amount of printing, I'd probably go laser, & I wanted to print lots of pics, I'd most certainly step up to something else, but for what this unit does, I'm quite satisfied. And when I've had any questions, they have been very good about support...

Not wanting to end up with yet another dissapointing printer, I did a lot of researching before purchasing the brother 440cn... It is better than I expected. Unlike some online review sites indicate, I find the print quality excellent, and it is faster than I am used to. It is very full featured and is economical for ink (even more so now that aftermarket cartdriges are available for it). I didn't think I would care for the LCD screen, but I find it adds a lot to the ease of use. Its appearance is very balanced and conservative, not over stylized like some competing models. Looking at online pictures I thought it was black and gray, but it actually charcoal and dull silver... looks nice. The photo bypass tray is really handy to have, although you have to slide out the tray and change the position its much quicker than having to put in different paper each time you want to print a picture. If you are a demanding office user that needs your printer to crank out fifty page documents in record time, look elsewhere, but if you are looking for something easy to use and that does the job without paper jams or color problems due to ink drying out, this is a good choice.

And now I think I have known how to use it well, but still could not resolve.

For the sake of your wallet and sanity ... Do not buy any printer made by Brother! I bought an inkjet multifunction that broke after about 24 months. It cost $90 to fix. Then it broke again ... the same problem, the infamous "error 41" ... four months later. I also bought a Brother laser printer. I installed a replacement toner cartridge, made by Brother, which was defective and leaked all over the inside of the machine, damaging the drum. Brother refused to cover the repair cost because they said the damage was caused by a "consumable" product - their defective toner cartridge! Another $110 to repair. In short, Brother products are junk, their warranty is bogus, and you'll waste a lot of money on repairing their garbage. I finally used my brain and bought a Lexmark, which I should have done in the first place because this brand has never caused me any problems.

The MFC-440CN is the best investment in printers that I've ever made. You won't find a better multi-function networking all-in-one for the price, and I couldn't ask for better quality and performance. Having always had problems attempting to share printers using the Windows share function, this product is a dream.

One of my friend bought this printer and still using now over 6 months without any problem. Now I also bought this same printer. It is excellent for the price and printing quality.I cannot understand why some people pay low price for this excellent value for money product and complaining about the speed. Well.. for that price you cannot expect a lightning fast printing speed. It is a reasonably fast enough unless you are in a very busy office environment. I used Brother Products even before and I was very satisfied. Spare parts, support and refilling are widely available. Unlike some other brand cartridges, they are not sky high price.Brother is a well made Japanese brand and it never let me down before. Exaggerated negative comments keeps people away from this great value for money product. What I bet is go and see for your self it is working demonstration in one of the stores and compare with other products. And don't forget check the prices of the new cartridges and after sale support too.

I have been purchasing computer printers since 1980 or so. This is the worst. Shabby quality. Something is wrong with the print head. Less than one year old, and ready for the junk pile. I wouldn't pay $1.00 for it. Must keep ALL color carts in service to print, even in gray scale. I use only Brother carts, so Brother can't blame my cart mfg. This is the most user unfriendly, wasteful printer since Okimate came out with that color ribbon contraption in the 1980's, but at least that worked and printed - the print head on this is going out and I only print a few pages a week. I'd be ashamed to produce this thing.I got a "junk" $25 printer at a discount store 2 years ago and it still functions despite being used to print 30pp+, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year, for over 2 years. Got this Brother to handle the fax and the very few copies we make.... and it couldn't last 6 months.

This printer is complete trash. All in one my .... If you want to print in black you must have all cartridges error free. If you want to scan you must have all cartridges error free. When i say error free i mean no empty ink messages. Why in the heck must you have ink cartridges to scan documents?Why must you have the cyan cartridge full when you want to print in black only? I will never buy another brother printer because of this.My other printer did not require having both color and black cartridges to print. The self cleaning process it does is ridiculous also. What a waist of ink. Looks like i'll be disposing of this thing after a year because buying new ink cartridges will cost about ~50 (20 for BW and 30 for color). What a bunch of crock this thing is.

I just installed one of these for a friend and in the instructions Brother tells you that you must use the cartridge before the expiration date on the cartridge package or six months after you place it into the machine.This means that if the machine has been on the store's shelf for a while your will have to replace the cartridge before it is empty.This also means that you should not purchase additional cartridges so that you can quickly replace the cartridge when it is empty because your backup cartridge also has at least the same expiration date.I would not buy this for anyone that might run into this cartridge expiration issue during a crisis such as getting out a term paper for college or a business offer or presentation at the last minute. You know how things go - it will expire exactly when you need it the most!!!!I would NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT....

There are obviously 4 ink cartridges in this unit. We typically print B/W only, and 99.9% of the time print in DRAFT mode. It seems we go through a cartridge per week, and we serve no business need (private family only). As you know, these cartridges are expensive. I would suggest not buying this product or any product made by brother.

I have had this machine for a few months and already replaced all the inks multiple times. Consider I've only used it a few times a month to copy, it's pretty expensive to keep the ink flowing! It refuses to print even black and white if one color ink runs low - "low" not even empty! I am looking into buying another multi-purpose machine that is chepaer to keep it working.

After looking at the reviews, here, I decided to get this printer, and after a month it still works really well. Good prints, and relatively fast. It took a couple times of running the programming disk through, due more to my lack of expertise, I suspect. A good buy! W.Callow

THIS PRODUCT PROVED TO BE THE WORST TO EVER HIT THE MARKET. IT IS SLOWER THAN A TIRED TURTLE, IT WILL NOT WORK IF ANY ONE OF THE INK TANKS IS EMPTY [EVEN IF IT'S NOT FULLY EMPTY], AND IT SHOWS SOME WEIRD WARNINGS. Great cost-effective personal printer if you need to use it only lightly. If you need a heavy use machine (i.e., personal office, etc.) this printer is not the way to go. Paper has bad habit of jamming when it prints large batches and what is worse is that, many times, one needs to take the whole machine apart to fix the problem!!!

I have no complaints with this product. It amazes me a device with so many features for such a low cost can produce the quality of images of the Brother MFC-440cn. It replaced (and improved the quality and speed) of three devices, and freed lots of room at the workstation. There may be more expensive devices that can produce higher quality images, but I can't imagine the quality can improve much over what this can do. For 8x10 color images it is great. The scanning quality and speed is excellent for my needs. Throw in the fax and copy capability with a color LCD menu screen AND the ability to print directly from memory cards and you've got one fantastic and useful piece of equipment. I'll have to get used to the included software, but it has some nice features as well as some minor quirks. Once you scan an image, it is not intuitive what you are supposed to do next. A small problem overall. Changing cartridges is the most convenient and simple process I've experienced on an inkjet printer. I would buy this device again.

The printing is fine. The ink usage is as other people have stated, it is completely absurd. Brother has outdone themselves with this piece of garbage... I print with color so infrequently, maybe 10 pages total in the time that I've owned this printer (about a year) have been color and I've had to replace the color cartridges on numerous occasions. Also, it should be noted that the printer identifies the cartridge as being out of ink when the cartridge gets to approximately half empty. Another issue is that when any of the cartridges is "empty," NONE of the printer's functions work until you replace that cartridge (including faxing and scanning) forcing you to spend more money on Brother products or never use your printer again. I will never, EVER buy another Brother printer. This is the second one I have owned and the other one was a piece of garbage, too.

I bought this to replace my Dell AIO960 and I like it so much better. It is more compact and prints better. It is quite and has great features. I would recommend this product to anyone that is looking for a reliable multi-function printer.

This all-in-one printer, copier, fax, and scanner is just right for me. The quality of the print is great, the speed is fine, and it is quiet. I just discovered that I can set up my fax speed dials from my computer. No more punching in the numbers on the machine. It's much quicker! I can also plug my camera memory chip right into the front of it and print pictures in seconds. It it also quite stylish in brushed silver and black. It has a digital window that lays flat or tilts up. This is a nice feature because I can tell a distance when it is receiving. This is my second Brother; I just really like the quality. I don't see how you can beat it for $116.

I'm not exactly sure why the "Spotlight" reviews for this printer are so positive. Take everyone else's word for it - This printer sucks. I made the mistake of buying 5440 and the 5840 for my business. I can deal with all the paper jams just fine. But the one thing that makes these printers terrible is how alarmingly often you will have to buy printer cartridges for this machine. Make no mistake - this is a money pit.Don't fall for that nonsense about "saving money because you can buy each color individually." This printer uses the color cartridges even when you're printing in B&W! AND all the cartridges slowly deplete over time even when you haven't printed anything at all (they call it "self-cleaning").And how does Brother add insult to injury? If ANY of the cartridges runs out of ink, it is absolutely impossible to perform any functions until you have purchased a new cartridge and replaced it. Want to send a fax? Too bad, because you're out of Yellow ink! Want to print a single sheet in B&W? Don't even try it until you've bought another Magenta!My 5840 died on me after about 5 months. The paper feeder just stopped working, and despite the fact that it was well within the warranty period, I didn't even bother getting it fixed. I didn't WANT it to be working. It was costing me that much money. Do not buy this printer.

We bought this printer in December of 2005 despite some of the review I've read about it here. It took about 15 minutes to set it up. My wife is into scrapbooking and prints alot of photos and does scanning as well. We have been very pleased with this purchase. Here in Colorado where we live we have had problems with ink cartridges drying out and becoming unusable even before they were empty. With this printer we have not seen this. We do a lot of printing and use quite a bit of ink. The ink for these cartridges are cheap and easy to come by. Even better, each color has it's own cartridge so we can replace only the color that goes dry.We've only had one time where the black ink wasn't showing up for us, after using a couple of cleaning cycles, it was working fine again. Simply put, if you do a lot of color printing, I believe this printer is a great value for the money.Regarding the fax, we've used it a couple of times and it was fairly easy to use. The scanner works great and we've been able to get great digital images from photos fairly easy. It comes with Paperport software which we've used in the past with other scanners so we can be a bit biased with that. We don't use any of the default settings but make sure to use custom which we've tailored to get the best scans.As far as the cons go, the printer folds the paper you use back over itself to print. This leads to jams, especially with cardstock or things of that thickness. They are easily corrected but can get annoying. I think if this model fed paper directly from the back of it, we could give it the highest rating.

This machine is a piece of junk. I bought it because it was cheap, I liked the idea of having a fax built in, and I figured Brother was a big enough company that they would not jeopardize their reputation with a really poor machine... HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! (it does seem humorous that I would have thought that, in retrospect)Let me tell you why I so dislike this machine. Text printing is so-so. Photocopying is so-so. Scanning is _poor_. No amount of color-correcting will make a photograph scanned on this machine look the way it ought to. Color printing is ok, but the colors tend to look faded/desaturated, and if you turn up the contrast or saturation settings, you get nasty ink blotches on the page.The real reason for the one-star rating, however, is this - the machine switches itself on, at all hours of the day and night, to "clean" itself, regardless of whether you've printed anything or not. This obsessive cleanliness comes at a cost, of course - ink is used with each cleaning. I got tired of being woken up, and began keeping it unplugged, but as soon as it's switched back on, like a neurotic feline, it is at it again.The end result of all this is that after printing around 15 pages in black and white, and only three in color, the blue ink has run out, and it will not print anything at all (nor copy). Brother may think they have found a way to get me to purchase their ink products, but they are sorely mistaken. I'm now in the process of trying to come up with a creative way to destroy the machine (maybe you'll see me on America's Funniest Home Videos, or at least YouTube).

I love everything about this Brother multi-function. EXCEPT ... the cheap, flimsy, sorry paper tray. I just do not like that paper tray. You have to take it all the way out to reload the paper, it prints off center, and it is rickety and just does not live up to the rest of the printer. Everything else about this item is great including the price. Another feature I have come to despise is the door in the back that is removable, so whenever there is a paper jam it is very easy to remove the paper. Sounds great right ... except if your paper is a heavier stock or you have printed several pages in a row, the back door just pops out and as a result creating ... a paper jam. Arg.

ADDENDUM TO MY REVIEW BELOW ON 09/03/04:Based on my recent experience, I can no longer recommend this printer.After using the HL-5140 for a couple of months, my initial favorable opinion of the printer has changed drastically. After putting about 4500-5000 pages through it I began to experience frequent paper jams using standard 8.5 x 11 multipurpose paper.Clearing the jams proved to be rather difficult and time consuming, invariably requiring the removal of the drum/toner unit (which can be a bit of a wrestling match).After printing about 7500 pages the printer totally locked up on me, indicating it was out of paper even though the tray was more than half full.Perhaps the unit I purchased was a "lemon." In their defense, and their customer service is very good, Brother did offer to replace it. However, I declined their offer. After using it for awhile I was not impressed with the 5140's design or function, and I had serious doubts that any new printer they sent me would perform any better.Being a medical transcriptionist who is paid on a production basis, I absolutely depend on a completely reliable laser printer that is fast and economical. Been printing on this a while and still haven't run into the ink problem. Set up was easy. The network functions for scanning and printing are great!!! This was a good bargain.

I can't understand how some people have rated this printer so poorly. Maybe I'm just a lucky one and got a good one. This is one of the cheapest printers I have ever bought (under $40 during a Staples sale) and ink is the cheapest ive ever seen for under 2 dollars a pop. I've had no problem with the printer and its ink reporting, and I am still using the original ink that came in the printer when I bought it almost 6 months ago! And I print a lot in any given week. The machine is well built compared to the Lexmark that this replaced. I've only heard it clean itself once in the last 6 months, and even if it is doing it more often, it doesnt seem to be eating that much ink.Now there are a few slight flaws, but nothing major. The scanner is not professional by any level, but all I use it for is scanning rebates and such, and making black and white copies. It is also a pain to put in envelopes, but isn't that big of deal.If you can get this printer on sale, definitely buy it!

I ordered this unit for my father based on my good experiences with a different (lower) Brother model. This one is even better with the network capabilities. Print quality is excellent and the ink is cheaper than other brands. He is very happy with it and says it beats his previous HP 3200 hands down.

I've had a Brother MFC-210C since early 2006. It looks great, saves space, and functions well in copy, scan, and print modes. I haven't used the fax or the photo capture functions. Some time ago I changed the Black cartridge with an off-brand and there was no problem printing from it.Recently I've run into paper-wasting in the print mode. It started printing color portions of pages OK but failing to print any black text! Looking at print previews I noticed that what should be black text was greyed out. Ink levels were indicated as high but then I began getting totally blank pages!I read a review of another Brother printer that said there is an (unreliable) optical ink-level sensor that can be disabled by masking the LC41 ink cartridges with tape. Rather than dealing with little bits of sticky tape, I used a black permanent marker pen to 'paint' the clear portion of each cartridge. That seems to have solved the problem. The printer now behaves as though all the cartridges are new and full; when I put the masked cartridges back in I punched 'yes' each time I was asked if they were new.So, for now, everything is printing normally again. But I'm not sure what will happen when a cartridge completely runs out of ink. I expect the printer will keep printing because all the cartridges will still 'look' full. I suspect the color printing will look odd if one of them is empty and, of course, there will be no printing where black would be if the Black cartridge runs out. I tend to print only one or two pages at a time so I'll notice pretty quickly when it happens. But its a hassle I could do without.I would not have bought this printer if I had been aware of all the negative reviews about its ink sensing and consumption problems.

I bought this because I needed a networked all-in-one with a small footprint that didn't take a lot of power. Assembly and setup was a bit involved, but the instructions were good and even the networking Just Worked. I connected it to a LAN with three Wintel boxes on it. Print speed was acceptable for a low-volume SOHO environment, and I had no trouble with scanning and fax. I missed the ability to scan to a USB drive, although you could scan to other memory devices. The only function I had trouble with was copying; pages would frequently have areas that were unacceptably light. I finally returned it for this reason.

I'm really pleased with this scanner/printer. I wanted a cheap reliable printer, and I got a scanner to boot.Its easy to use, doesn't use much ink. Excellent value for money. Fairly quick. The USB cable is a little badly placed(under the scanner panel) and the cable isn't very long. But that a minor problem.I defiantly recommend this , even if you just need a printer. Its still good value.Just to update this review 10/1/2008. I'm still really happy with this machine. Still going strong. Best printer I've ever purchased.

This is a poorly designed and constructed device. It constantly locks up, paper jams, and otherwise just fails.Brother used to be a reputable company that made reliable products but after my experience with this item I would stay away from any of their products*** update after a yearI hardly ever print anything so I did not want to go out and buy another printer. I now hate this printer more than any other product I have ever purchased in my entire life.It drinks up ink cartriges even if you don't print anything, by going through periodical "cleaning" cycles. I fixed this by turning off the electrical outlet feeding the printer from my computer power conditioner unless I am using it.Now I just want to scan something, but it won't let me because it is out of Cyan. WTF do you need Cyan ink for if you are just scanning?!?!I just ordered an ink refill kit online, hopefully this will be a reasonably inexpensive way to feed the appetite for ink that this piece of junk has.

Well, I had to wait a few weeks to get this inkjet refill, but as long as you go by the "always have a spare on hand" method, you should be in good shape buying this item at Amazon. Staples (my local B&M choice) did not sell the High Yield Inkjet Cartridge. Anyone who uses inkjets probably knows you get a MUCH better deal with the high yield cartridges. Also, you only have to go through the hassle of replacing ink 1/2 as many times.

This is my first Brother printer. I bought it because my father, who has a Brother MFC-210C, advise me of the extraordinary quality of that brand. I can't said anything but that I am enchanted of the features of this device. Its scanner works so smooth and with a very low sound, not noise. It prints photographies with very natural colors, so as you see on your PC's monitor, and they look very beautiful even in regulatr paper. I had't try with photo paper. Other features (copier, fax, cards readers, and so on, are also very good. Thanks father, and thanks Brother.

I picked up the printer on black friday for $60 and I have to say it has tons of features for the price. Print quality is real good; I havent tried the scanner yet. When you photocopy you lose a tiny bit of the original quality - if you photocopy in best mode instead of normal mode then this probably wont happen at all.My only gripe is that this thing is really slow. They advertise 24ppm, and this is an outright lie. On the lowest quality mode (called "fast") with all features turned off, printing just black text I got less than 13ppm and the quality is horrendous. On "fast normal" mode it goes about 9ppm and the quality is fine for non-important prints. On "normal" mode, I get about 7ppm but at least the prints are quite nice and bold. Keep in mind that the above is strictly plain text. On color mode, or even black and white with graphics, good luck - you have a nice wait ahead of you.Overall I do like it and would recommend getting one.

I just bought this printer because my old hp office jet 6110 was flaking out on me and being a college student i can't have any down time. i wan not originally looking for another all in one because my HP was so big but considering that this was small and $50 more than the printer i was looking at AND it had networking ability i decided to try it out... the print quality is not bad for a $150 printer and it's small size is great. i only have one problem with it... it seems that you have to install the brother software to be able to print... most of the "network ready" printers run a print server so you can just enter the ip address and go... but for the price and features overall it is a good piece of equipment

I've only had this one day, so this is not a long-term review type thing.After some searching around, we decided to buy this printer. We were NOT looking for anything but a printer - but we had to find one that we could throw on our home network, and would work with both our old windows 98 machine, our two macs, and any winxp laptops I needed to bring home from work. Price was extremely important - at this time we just can't afford a printer that's has a high sticker AND high ink costs. This machine met, and exceeded, all of our requirements. We managed to get it when there was a mail-in rebate going on, so the price was extremely low.I was worried that printing from our Win98 machine was going to be a problem, but not so. All other things being equal (ie, if every machine was trying to print a very simple MSWord file, not one trying to print a pic and the others printing simple text), the machine that is the slowest is our wireless laptop. Even so, the print time for our home use is quite acceptable.Set up was very very easy - the only small gotcha that wasn't readily apparent (until I actually looked at the setup guide :-) was how to put the ethernet cable in and where the inkjet cartridges go. Set up on the computers was also quick, painless and worked immediately.The size of the machine is smaller than you'd think for the amount of things it can do. I think it's about 11 inches high, about 15 inches deep and 18 inches wide ... Amazon doesn't list exact specs, but if you look around on the web you can find them.Since we weren't looking for a copier, scanner, fax, etc., these are all bonuses to us. We haven't fully tried all of these aspects, but as we do I may come in and update the review. Our daughter is really excited that she can now have some of the pictures she's drawn as her background her her machine; having something that can in a pinch act as a copy machine should come in handy (those zillions of forms for school....); I don't think, however, we'll be using the fax ever.As I said, we've only had it a day or so, so we'll see how it goes long term, but right now we're so very very pleased with this purchase.

This is great compact multi-function device for the price. However I would recommend you purchase the product somewhere else rather than paying more than $50 in shipping for a 20# box.

Previously, I owned the Brother MFC unit that did not have fax and loved it so when this unit went on sale I grabbed it. All aspects work as expected which is great. The software tends to load a lot of stuff not needed (for us) so I removed the automatic loading functions from msconfig and simply call the printer or scanner as required. The adf feature (automatic doc feed) feature is a real time saver. Software is excellent too. No, I don't work for the company. It's just nice, for a change, to get a product that actually works. And if you need to call Brother, a human located in the USA actually answers the phone. Imagine that!

i just got this for $79 @ office max. it's not a bad machine.i leave it in standby mode, and it does not clean itself ever! it cleans when i turn it on. and i guess i only do that when i need to use it (not every day)a 4 pack of ink (black, yellow, magenta, cyan) on ebay is only $14 shipped. so stop complaining bout the ink hog. it's cheaper than my lexmark.Pros:-all in one in a tiny package-really nice copy quality for an allin1-pretty cheap ink (cheaper than any inkjet device i've ever had)-clear simple instructions-pretty fast for normal and low quality printing-ok photo printing quality. can't compare to a dedicated photo printer, but hell, $79 for this is pretty good-beats buying a scanner, 6000 dpi printer, color fax machine, copying device-cheapCons:-so-so color photo quality-no usb cable (guess that's a problem with all printers)-not really suitable for heavy use-paper in paper tray will get dusty after a while (no paper cover)-no color screen to view the pics before printingand contrary to what the other guy said, u can scan and different dpi to the computer. the brother software lets u do that, and if u want to go uberpro, u don't have to use the bundled scanning software.

Bought this printer off Amazon for $99.00 shipped to my door in less than a week. I had bought only Epson printers up to this point and was nor sure about Brother printers. For this price you cannot find a printer with all the features this one has. I think the prints are great if you use photo paper. It was a breeze to set up with my network and it scans, copies, and faxes with ease. It also has separate cartridges and you can get 3rd party ones for $5.00 a piece. I am very happy with this printer.

Bought at Staples 3 weeks ago. Went into Staples looking for a FAX machine and came out with this machine for just $50 more. Wasn't looking to replace my printer, but coincidentally I was running out of ink for it. I set the machine up and faxed my paper within 25 minutes. Finally last week I installed the software for the printer & scanner. Works great for the price. If you want very high quality prints, this may not be for you. But if you want good prints, a FAX machine and a scanner, you'll have a hard time beating this machine.

Scans fine, prints ok. Haven't really noticed the obsessive self cleaning or abnormally high ink usage but I HAVE only successfully printed about 20% of the envelopes I have tried to print (about 20 out of 100!!) -- I even went for the more expensive "for inkjet use" envelopes thinking it was the cheap ones I was using that was jamming it. 1 prints fine (although not necessarily first), 2 come out, but they are smeared and printed on a slant, and then 2 just jam up completely. It is about to go out the window... I could live w/ the cumbersome loading of envelopes (and 1 at a time), but then for it to either ruin or eat them is infuriating.

I purchased this machine for use in a small business, and though less than a year has passed since purchasing it, we have been forced to requst replacement units twice already.It suffers from constant paper jams, apparently both because of proximity of the paper feed to the output tray, and (more frequently) in the feed mechanism at the back. Even after the paper is removed, the printer generally dos not recognize the jam is cleared and must be power cycled to reset it (and before cycling, to wait several minutes for the print head to reset itself into idle mode).The print head also jammed several times, these jams necesitating the replacement of the unit. Customer service at Brother replaced our unit both times, but only after a process considerably more laborious than my experiences with other printer manufacturers (ie Epson and HP).When working, the printer was a great buy for the price, with easy-to-use controls and out-of-the-box functionality. However, its various problems disabled it such a large amount of the time that these benefits were overshadowed.If you're looking for a low-end all-in-one machine that you'll be using fairly heavily, look elsewhere. We've had better luck with sheet-fed HPs, which seem to jam considerably less.

My HP finally gave out, so I did some research before buying a new printer.This printer has great features for this or any price :Fax, Copy, Scan, Photo capture.All, except scan, can be used with the computer turned off.Oh yes it also has a network connection.Now I can easely print from my laptop.All for less then $100.00Also print Quality is very good.Set up was very easy, excellent documentation.You cant go wrong

I have never felt compelled to write a review before, but I was so impressed with this Multi-function machine, I had to do it. I was shopping for a inexpensive Multi-function machine with an auto document feeder, and the 5440CN fit the bill perfectly. The included Scan Soft PaperPort software worked out of the box without much of a learning curve. This machine will scan up to 35 pages at the touch of a button and convert them to pdfs!! The fax machine function works as advertised as well. I haven't used the printing function much, but was not impressed when I did. This definately is NOT for color photo printing.and finally Linux support. Brother actually releases current drivers that work like they are supposed to Linux!! Almost unheard of...Great scanner with an auto document feeder, great fax, and decent printer with perfect Linux support!! And, it's cheap!!

I must say I have owned several printers - lexmark, hp, epson, but this printer beats them all in performance and price.

just bought this printer from office depot for less than $100 and it was very easy to set it up and so far its doing a very good job.
