We got this printer 4.5 years ago and were very happy with it the whole time. We used it to print our wedding invitations on heavy stock paper as well as the envelopes using the manual feeder and were very happy with the results. The printer worked well hooked up to my apple airport express. The quality was good and the speed was satisfactory. We have probably printed less than 2000 pages in the lifetime of this printer and have only gone through 1 toner beyond the one that came with the printer. We almost exclusively print text and maps in light grey scale. After having this for 4.5 years it started making a loud knocking noise and jamming all the time. The noise happened even with the drum removed. A local printer repair shop said that it would likely cost as much to repair this printer as it would to get a new one. The only reason that it did not get 5 stars is that it died after a period of very moderate use. We had hoped to get many more years out of this printer.

My existing scanner, printer, etc. have worked great for years but now incompatible with Vista (it's such a waste to throw great working items away just do to the fact that it is not as profitable for companies to create new drivers vs. just selling you a new printer .. I would pay good money for a new driver if available ... but i digress)Ok. So I shop Amazon and read the reviews about the similar Epson model, seems like it has serious issues with using way to much ink and then shuts down your ability to scan and fax if empty (functions that don't even use ink)! No good. Then I look at the similar HP model, only to find out it appears to have issues with paper jamming, software bugs, and so on. The reviews on this Brother model did not seem so bad in comparison - so I took a chance and purchased. Here is a quick summary of what you will find:Pro's:- Stylish, well made.- Uses a paper tray- Scanning was good quality and fast- Printing speed seems ok (but really only as fast as my old printer)- Automatic document feeder on the top is nice, and works well.- Separate phone with the ability to listen using machine speaker phoneCon's:- COLOR PRINT QUALITY IS BAD. When I print the exact same Google map (for example) on my very old HP P1100, the quality is far superior than this brand new one .. the Brother color print outs are 'washed out" and are sometimes hard to read (cleaning, priming, etc. on the printer heads did not change anything). I can only imagine what would happen if I tried to print a photo ... but I wanted to return while I still could. I knew something was strange when I printed a test page and it looked so strange and generic (and also 'washed out')- When you press the scan button, defaults to "scan and send to email" (only configures goes to outlook which I don't use anyway). If you want to scan to your PC, then you have to navigate through a menu to get there. Then, the next time you scan ... guess what ... back to the default again! Seems like a minor issue, but wait until you need to scan 200 photos or multi page document.- The handset nor speaker phone has no MUTE button ... a problem if you attend a lot of conference calls like I do.The only problem is now I have to choose between the best of several 'evils' ... is there not a good printer out there somewhere ... I am willing to to pay even up to $500 now for something that works, but where is it? Also, what has happened to quality products! Seems like they just want to sell low quality printers and then milk you for even more money later via printer cartridges that cost more than the printer itself! Seems like the industry is going backwards. The bad part is that I need SOMETHING and will end up purchasing one of these eventually and that sends the wrong message to these companies that think they can get away with it ...

I bought this printer largely because of the good reviews and the 11x17 printing capability which comes in handy quite often.I was NOT impressed with the text quality; could not print out a resume that looked good enough, even on the best quality setting. On a side note, quality settings below "normal" are pretty low quality - too low for legible emails, etc. I'm not sure who would ever want to use them to save ink, as you'll be more frustrated with illegible prints. When attempting to make multi-page copies using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), the copies can be sorted (which is to be expected) but the pages print out in REVERSE ORDER!! I checked to make sure I fed the originals properly (face up), went through ALL of the settings, and also called Technical Support - all with NO solutions. The only solution offered by Support was to put my originals in "reverse order"!! Yeah, with a 30-page document - I DON'T THINK SO! For printing multi-page documents from the computer, I was able to check off "Reverse Order" in the printer driver (Preferences). There is no such setting on the printer itself (for copying). By default, prints come out face up: page 1, 2, etc. That drives me nuts! I want to be able to grab the stack, staple it, and go.Also, color copying did not pick up light colors at all, even on the best quality setting. It also reduced the image size a smidge, which Support had no answer for. For some reason, it does not scan the document edge to edge either, so you'll lose some items in the margin even when just scanning (can't do a true 8.5" x 11" area).Fortunately, I discovered all these problems within the first 14 days of ownership and was able to return the printer (bought at Staples). I never did get to test the 11x17 printing; the printer was not worth the headaches I discovered already. Sales associates noted that Brother has one of the highest return rates for printers. Hmmmmm....

I bought this printer when it was on sale for about $90.00. Our color laser printer had given up the ghost and we needed something quick and didn't have time to research the color lasers. This little baby has worked perfectly right out of the box. I'm pretty well versed in network setups, but I needed to read the setup instructions. But I had it up and running in less than 15 minutes. Its print quality is so good, that depending upon the cartridge yield, we may not replace the laser. We don't need great speed and don't do a lot of big jobs, so I have a feeling its going to work out just fine.Haven't tried the photo-realistic feature, but that's not why I bought the printer.Only 2 gripes. The fancy software that allows you to do everything, (send/receive faxes) from your computer is only good for two computers. Then they want you to buy more licenses. Good grief, this is a NETWORK printer. Two users? Get real!!But that didn't bother me because I don't need, nor do I want, those features on my machines. So I just installed the drivers only and things work fine. Might try the fancy software on one machine later just so we can have the functions available if we need them.Second gripe is paper tray. 100 sheets seems like too little for me. But maybe its just because I'm use to our 500 sheet laser.Handle the paper tray gently. The plastic looks a little flimsy and I'm sure it would cost more to replace it than the printer cost in the first place. But as long as you are careful, I think it will hold up fine.Anyway, a good value for the $'s.Oh, and I had to call Brother on a support issue (turned out to be me being stupid as opposed to anything wrong with the printer). They actually talked to me. I could understand them and they were very patient. Pretty good for a $90.00 printer.

One big negative: If one ink cartridge goes empty, no matter what color, it will not let you print at all. Not in "black only" or any other color, AT ALL. There is a fix for this if you just put a piece of electrical tape around the "ink level window" on the cartridge. Here is a link that will get you through an ink crisis...http://journal.drfaulken.com/trick-your-brother-inkjet-into-working-when-an-ink-cartridge-runs-dry/However, if you use your printer several times per week and are responsible enough to keep an extra set of ink on-hand this is a great machine. Ink is cheap on Amazon and this machine uses a different cartridge for each color so you can replace only the colors you use most. I print often so I can't comment on how quickly the ink dries up if it is not used. The quantity of pages printed is average. The initial ink cartridges shipped with mine ran out quickly but that may be due to initial filling of the jets and low capacity starting cartridges. Other full-size cartridges had average output. If you have some basic skills on networking it is no problem. If you are a novice and don't know how to set firewall settings to be sure it is allowing access, you probably need a geeky friend to help you setup *any* network printer. All the functions and resolution quality advertised work fine. The remote setup functions are straight-forward. Sticking a a USB flash drive (AWESOME!) or memory card straight in the machine and printing from the LCD screen is straight-forward and a real time saver for a quick print. 4x6 borderless printing works without a hitch. As with any inkjet, you must give them time to dry. Printing speed is good for the price. If you need something faster then pay more for the speed. The basic functions of scanning/copying with enlargements/reductions etc work fine for me.The space saving design is great. You only need clearance to lift the scanning lid and you can slip paper and photos in easily without raising the lid very far at all.I have had this machine for almost a year and I love it. But, I always keep ink on-hand so I'm not screwed!

I got the printer and it was easy to set up on our three computers. I love the 11 x 17 printing. The only problem I have had is that under the normal quality setting, black is more a very dark grey. Under the fine quality setting, the black is black. I order remanufactured cartridges from [...] for about $2.50 each. It is a big printer but it is a great printer.

I bought the first one from Adorama in NY for $100. The second from Amazon for $89 about 6 mlonths later. I have had mutliple HP printers over the past 5 years. The latter work, but Brothers is by far the best. The wireless feature of course was the main reason for buying, but faxing, copyng, printing....this model does it all. Easy to set up, technical support is one of the best, no waiting, courteous...I would highly recommend this product.I was surpised, in this recession, to see the price which is double what I paid, but compared to any other wireless printer, I strongly recommend it.

Ordinarily one of my least favorite things to do is to set up office equipment like printers or fax machines. I was prepared to hunker down for the evening and install this multi function printer on a wireless network with three PC's and two Mac's. Four of the computers are connected to Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router by ethernet and the other wireless. The set-up of the printer was a snap. It probably took about 40 minutes from taking the printer out of the box to printing a test picture on the last computer and most of that time was taking the plastic packing material off the printer and waiting while the software and drivers installed on the computers. It was painless. No foul words, no bad temper or snarling. After plugging in the printer and connecting the phone line for the fax, I installed the ink cartridges and set up the fax info on the little LED screen. It was simple, just followed the directions in the quick start guide. (They even supplied pictures) Then I followed the prompts on that little LCD screen to connect to my wireless network. It saw it right away, asked for passwords, etc. and, POOF! the printer was connected to my network. Then I just put the CD that came with the printer into each of the computers, one at a time (They have installers for both the Mac and PC on the same CD) and POOF! again. They were all hooked up and I could print pictures. It was that easy. Now I can print from all of the computers and there's no wires running from the printer to any of the computers or to the router. It almost seems like magic!I can remember times when connecting just one printer to a computer was a major "plug and pray" ordeal. This was completely painless and I'm not a computer geek by any stretch of the imagination. The photos I've printed so far look great. I sent a fax to my office, but will have to wait til tomorrow to make sure it went through. It looks like it did. The scanner works just fine. Another little thing that's cool about this machine is the LCD window. I took a picture of it and posted it on this product page. Two thumbs up for this printer!

do NOT waste your time on this thing.the first one I had, the scanner randomly made a heinously loud buzzing noise and refused to move. I hardly used the scanner, and took great care with it.. it had to be exchanged.the second jams CONSTANTLY, and you have to turn the machine off to clear the jam (after reaching around back to get the jam out, which is difficult when you have it sitting on a desk or shelf). you cant use the machine unless all four ink cartridges have ink in them, and the printer registers the inks empty way before they actually are, so ink costs a fortune and if you run out and dont have extra laying around youre outta luck. print quality is terrible, particularly in color. finally, unless you have the thing plugged in at all times (which I dont, because it wastes electricity), as soon as you go to print something it goes into cleaning mode for about 5 minutes.without a doubt the most frustrating piece of equipment I have owned.

I was hesitant to purchase this based on all the mediocre reviews, but I am extremely happy with the 240c. I think its about the best multi-function you can get for under a hundred bucks (with the possible exception of tha Canon Pixma). First, a few of these reviews contain critical errors about the unit. First: It IS possible to scan multiple documents into a single PDF file. One simple way is to load up your documents into the top paper feeder, then scan to PDF, and every page it scans will be put into the same file. Another way to do it is to use the Presto Pagemanager software that comes on the installation CD. Second: the 240c DOES have incoming fax capabilities...you have to enable it in the Fax options on the unit's menu setup (not on your computer). It does not have a handset so you cannot use it as a phone, but at least on the 240c that I have, it can indeed receive faxes. Third: the reason the unit will not print anything even if only one cartridge is blank is because it uses a suction type cart (different from most inkjets), and damage to the unit will occur if an empty cartridge is left in. That said, here's my review.Build quality is overall very durable, with the possible exception of the paper tray. It won't turn any heads with its bland utilitarian appearance, but its compact and sturdy for home or home office usage. It also looks like an office machine, as opposed to the flimsy Fisher-Price looking offerings from HP and Lexmark. The controls are laid out sufficiently and you should be able to figure things out by surfing through the unit's menu, although there are alot of setup options so you may have to do some searching. The only complaints about the design are the small, non-backlit display and the paper tray. The paper tray is more like a paper container with a lid, that loads like a cartridge. If you only print on one type of paper its fine, but if you want to switch and print envelopes, 4X6, etc., it can do it but you have to take the tray out, take out all the paper, adjust the slider, then put in the new paper and re-insert.Print and scan quality are just fine. In fact, the scanner is very impressive and scans are much better quality than the Canon it replaced. Print quality is just fine...I dont see any washed out colors or anything else others have noted. Its prints as good as any unit will under a hundred bucks. The copy and scan features work just great and fast. You can either use the computer to make copies or you can bypass your PC altogether and use it as a standalone copier. Most of the features can be run either from the software or the unit itself, which is great. The top-feeding document accepter is a huge time saver. Also, the lid on the scanner is hinged allowing you to scan thicker items, like books, easily. As far as ink usage, some settings must be adjusted to get longer life. First, disable "bi-directional printing" as it uses alot of ink and wrinkles the paper. Set the paper-type to "plain." This is huge, because if you dont, even if you select grayscale printing, it will pull ink from the color cartidges. Also, if you print mostly text, set the print quality to the "fast" settings, and it looks just fine. You want to conserve ink, since these cartridges run about 20-25 bucks for black, and around 12-14 for each color. But, the cartridges are huge so they should last average users a while. For heavy office use, you may want to look at a a higher end or laser model. The fax feature I dont use so I cant comment much on how that works. It also accepts most major memory cards for photo printing, but without a preview screen your better off printing pics from your computer. It is also worth noting that this unit IS Mac compatible (many of the sub-$100 machines aren't), although I had to update the drivers and software from Brother's website after installing the CD to get some scanning features to work. I'm assuming this has something to do with the whole Intel / PPC switch. I'd highly advise you to do the same...their site is just their name, and the update offerings fixed the few bugs I encountered.Overall I am very impressed with this unit. I had returned an HP c3180 multi-function because it couldnt hold a handle to this as far as overall quality and value. Highly recommended for home and light home office use.

Purchased the Brother MFC-490CW printer on Amazon while it was on sale for $79.99 including free shipping! For that price, you would be a fool not to purchase an all-in-one including built-in Ethernet, USB, and wireless. I had an HP all in one that was getting old and also used way to much ink which was about $34 a cartridge. I have found ink online for this printer ranging from $2-$15 a cartridge. This is a good solid printer for those who want to save money on ink and print a lot of documents and pictures. I have looked at HP printers triple in cost and can't understand why anyone would overlook this printer. I installed the printer on my wireless network with 4 computers including an Apple, IBM, and two other generic custom built computers. They all work great with this printer and are able to print and scan from anywhere in the house. I love it, thanks BROTHER for making such a great printer available at a great price. Also thanks Amazon for the great deal!Overall: Fast, Quiet, Reliable, Saves Power, Wireless, Ethernet, USB, Good Print Quality,Cheap Ink, Small size, and looks good!

Where else can you get a fax, scan, copy and photo capture for $70. It works fine, easy to set up and use. If you read the instructions carefully you will have no problems. I had a black ink problem with white lines, but I just went to the trouble shooting section of the manual and it tells you how to clean the black ink only. It copies faster than my last model MFC-240. Its also quieter. It also has a sleep mode and is energy efficient. The only problem I see is that sometimes the phone rings and the screen will say telephone so I have to uplug it and replug it to clear the message. Sometimes its says try again later, also just unplug and replug. That should be the least of ones worries. Press the on/off switch for a few seconds to shut off or on. Patience I say. No banging or cursing...lol.I bought this model when my Brother MFC-240 had a paper jam. I actually broke it by ripping the paper out manually. Never rip the paper out or touch the printer head and don't buy very cheap ink. Have patience and always read before freaking out. I chose to give it away to charity for someone else to pay $25 to repair. Brother has service centers all over the USA. I like Brother. I also have an electric Brother typewritter and had no problems with it. As long as you take care of it, it will serve you well.

Printer is small size for all-in-one. Non-OEM ink cartridges work fine with printer and lowest ink costs of any printer I have ever owned. The paper tray doesn't hold a lot of paper and is a bit flimsy. This printer gets a lot of use by 6 people and I have had no complaints from anyone about quality, function, or software. The network software is simple to use and reliable. Dell, and HP software I had before was buggy and/or overly complicated, and unreliable in providing status of printer and ink. I made the mistake of buying the refillable cartridges that stick way out in the front of the printer - the nozzle fit was poor and eventually threw them out. The scanner is fast and faxing couldn't be easier.

I removed the jam and have not been able to use this thing since because it is still reading a jam. I took it to a repair shop and they broke it completely down to find nothing. My one year warranty happened to expire before I got it out of the shop and I am stuck with a useless pile of nothing.

This is the worst piece of office gear I've ever used.Scanner works fine. The problem is the printer. I replace these color ink carts constantly yet I haver never made a color print. I also keep the unit unplugged as this helps slightly with the constant replacement of ink carts problem but this unit is always needing new carts.Interface for replacing the carts is annoying and carts often don't register as properly seated and am always having to reopen the lid and fidget with the carts to make sure they're fully in there.I often have to unplug the machine as it tends to freeze up in the middle of a print.Often the first page of a print doesn't come out right.Thing cleans itself for a half hour before every print. In short DON'T BUY THIS THING.It would be well worth the time and annoyance to spend 5 hundred more dollars on another unit not manufactured by Brother. I will never buy another Brother product. Learned my lesson on this thing which I will have to cut the cord off so I don't trip on it while it's performing it's new function as a door stop which it is much better at although very expensive for what it does.

I researched copiers extensively when we needed to get a new one for our office. I make about 500-750 black and white copies per week, and for this capacity, this machine works great and is a great value.Good things about it: It copies fast; you can put a stack of 40 sheets of paper at a time in the feeder tray; it only very rarely pulls through 2 sheets at a time, so I don't have to watch it making copies the entire time; the paper tray will hold about 200 sheets of paper; and it uses very cheap toner. I've had the machine for about a year and a half now, and it still works just as well as it did the day I got it.Bad things about it: it does curl the copies a lot of the time... honestly no big deal to me, a slight nuisance since not as much paper will fit in the output tray when it's curled, but the curling goes away after a few minutes when the paper cools off; the paper tray is kind of tricky... when i first got it, i couldn't fill the tray all the way up without the machine giving me an error message. But it turned out i just needed to lengthen the tray (it's adjustable). And considering I got this for $350 when everything else comparable that I could find was $600+, I am very, very happy with it. I actually almost didn't buy it because of some of the negative things said about it in other Amazon reviews... that's why I'm writing this review (this is the first review I've ever written.)Honestly, if you need a black and white copier that isn't super expensive (initial cost or toner), i couldn't recommend this more.

I purchased this printer to share between 3 PCs and 1 Apple on our wireless network. I was able to easily set up the network and install the printer on all the computers. I am pleased with the quality of the print and with its copying and scanning capabilities. (I've never used the fax feature.)The problem with this printer is printing from two of my PCs. All three of the PCs on the network are running Vista. One PC has no problems. I have constant problems with it on the other two. It is impossible to print a multi-page document. I have to print each page separately or I get a printing error. I often get the error when printing a single page also. It will print a portion of the page then flash an error. If I don't delete the pending document, it will try over and over to print it, using all of my paper and ink. This means I can never leave a print job unattended. Troubleshooting on the Brother website says problem is resolved with restarting the computer. They're right... it resolves the problem long enough to possibly print a couple of pages. Then I have to restart again.I don't recommend this printer to anyone who uses Vista.

I bought this printer to replace a Brother MFC-210 that I used for general printing. The 210 was a workhorse. We used it for 5 years until finally quit feeding paper. The 210 used LC41 cartridges that were translucent and easy to refill, significantly lowering the cost of printing. I didn't research the MFC-290, thinking it was just an upgrade of my 210. I was wrong. On the pro-side, the MFC-290 printer and software are easy to install and I haven't had any problems with incompatibility. The print quality is good for a low end printer. The copy function is slow, but it does have a 25 page document feeder that is a nice feature. On the con-side, the fax function on ours does not work well. We have trouble both sending and receiving faxes. My major complaint is that this printer is an ink hog. The cartridges hold less than 10 ml of ink (I opened one and measured) and the printer stops working when there is 1 to 2 ml of ink remaining in the cartridge. When one a color cartridge is empty, you cannot continue black printing. In addition, it uses ink when it runs routine cleaning cycles after standing. Now that I've gone back and compared the retail cartridge costs this printer has one of the highest per page cost. I have switched to off-brand cartridges, but you should note that use of these voids your warranty.

I purchased this unit when it was on sale for $39, and I would not recommend it even at that price. The all-plastic construction is flimsy and I'm constantly afraid I'll break off a critical piece in the paper tray or elsewhere. The paper jams ALL. THE. TIME. Once it goes into sleep mode, it will not wake up for an incoming fax. I usually end up having to turn it all the way off and on again to get the fax function to work again, while fielding numerous calls from contractors who can't send me a fax. When sending a fax, I often can not get it to grab the sheets to send. It also doesn't properly print many of the fonts I use regularly - they all end up looking like a slight variation of Times Roman. The USB port is oh-so-conveniently located in the middle of the inside of the machine, under the scanner glass. No, I'm not kidding. After plugging it in, you're required to snake the cable through a series of tabs for it to come out the back of the machine. Not only does this eat up almost a foot of your cable, I ended up breaking off one of the flimsy tabs in the process. That was at 10 minutes out of the box, so I knew I was in for a bumpy ride. It is absolutely the worst machine I have ever had to rely on and it will be replaced. Problem is, I don't know what to do with this piece of junk - my conscience won't even allow me to GIVE it away.

This is my second Brother MFC, and both are serving well in two different locations. Although the print speed could be faster and the colors could be a slight bit truer, this is a great value- it does everything I ask of it. Simple setup. Can't do anything about the average print speed, but colors can be adjusted. Fax works fine. I wish the paper hopper held twice as much paper (only holds about 1/2" stack). A big insult was the amount of ink in the included cartridges... it started warning low ink in all cartridges within 4 days... and I hadn't printed many things... between 10-20 color documents, about half of them pictures. Come on, people, don't treat your customers like that- we're talking a few pennies worth of ink here- charge another dollar for the printer or loss-lead it, don't make people angry at the start. Poor marketing, regardless if it has become common among the manufacturers. The good news is that this is my only major gripe. My advice: If the features fit your needs, buy this printer.

When I first joined the "computer-age", back in 2006, I had no idea what I needed in a computer or printer. This unit was displayed at BJs Wholesale Club, for around $50. The ink cartridges were also available, around $15.00 for the three colors or 2 black cartridges. I found it acceptable & easy to use for the printing & copying functions. I had to get help from a computer teacher at the high school I took some computer courses at, to learn how to use the scanner function. This, I have to agree, is the worst feature of this unit. A wizard appears & makes for a tedious process, without being able to pereview the item. Then, finding the document later is problematic. The one strength is in the ability to replace just one color at a time. I sometimes do a large project that only requires one or two colors. That is the weakness of a printer that has a tri-color single cartridge. One other reviewer paid attention to the fact the machine will not print if one cartridge is low, and then, there looks like quite a bit of ink in the cartridge (cartridge housing is transluvent, allowing user to see ink level). Be careful when purchasing remanufactured cartridges! BE CERTAIN THE "FOOTPRINT" matches EXACTLY! I have had some good-luck & some bad luck using remanufactured cartridges. A better idea might be to refill a Brother brand cartridge yourself. I wish I had known the negative paoints of managing your printer preferences on the machine. The LCD display is hard-to-read & the mode timer is a "royal-pain-in-the-neck!Would I buy this machine again? Probably not. I like having the photocopy capability at home. The main positive feature of this unit compared to my HP printer only is the ability to change single colors.

This printer worked great on its first cartridges, but soon afterwards the cartridges were empty and now that I've replaced them with new Brother cartridges the printer refuses to print black, it just churns out blank page after blank page, looked all over the internet and tried every fix imaginable with no help, I think I'm gonna be getting rid of this printer even though it's less than a year old, it's just not worth the constant headache, definite no-go if you want to avoid headache in the long run, just do a search on google and you'll see the countless number of users who are utterly disappointed with this product

I only use Mac and Linux and this printer just works great with both of them. In Linux, it can be detected automatically. In Mac, you need to install the accompany software first. There are several features I really like about this printer. I am listing two here:1) Network supportYou can plug the printer to your Either net using a cable, and print wirelessly from your laptop. If you scan a document, the printer is smart enough to detect whether there is a storage media (flash drive, etc.) or a network connection. In case it has a network connection, it asks you whether you want to upload the scanned file into a FTP server.2) Support bigger cartridgeIt can use the more economical and bigger cartridge, which will save you money in the long run compared to cheaper models. The only thing I don't like the printer so far is the LCD screen. The quality of the LCD is not as good as that of a current cell phone, but I do not use the LCD often.

I bought this for my sister. Once you figure out the weird setup, this thing works fine. Don't expect to use it as a photo printer. The couple of times I used it, it did what it was supposed to do and for this price range, there are not a lot around that can do this. But the biggest seller was the cost of the ink which I found Brother to be the most cost efficient at. Buy HP at your own risk, you will end up paying a lot more if you go with them.

This is an excellent machine. It can do all functions with ease and relative speed. It's not a super high tech.,big $$ machine.I purchased it in July, before I had a computer because I needed a machine for Faxing, and also it was to be a prerequisite for a computer purchase. It is excellent in Fax Mode, you don't even need to have full power on,there are settings where the machine is virtually "off"and it will still receive a fax. Then the big day came when I brought home my computer. I really thought there will be all kinds of geeky things to contend with here.To my total amazement after completing the computer set up,this machine was the virtual piece of cake. Simply plug in one USB line(optional),insert the CDand away it goes. There are the usual questions to answer as with any machine you add to your system, but so what! In the end you have all the incredible functions installed and ready to go at your finger tips. What more could one ask for?Yes,I have read some of the reviews here and other places, both good and not.I look at it this way; if YOU bought this machine with the intentions of using it to the fullest,YOU should take the time in the beginning to set it up to work to your best advantage of functionality.Doing this will avoid having another person write a poor review only because they did not take the time to start with to understand such a complex machine.Customer support is always there.I know this because I see it on-line when I check to see if it is available, and it is.Other than this I have never had to give a thought about them because I have had no problems with this machine at all. Yes it cleans itself,I find this a plus just for the fact I know it is always ready to go.In my opinion there is not a better machine for my home office, especially in this price range. If you are in the market for this type of machine,do yourself a favor and pick this one up today you will not be sorry, I'm not!!When you buy this unit, buy USB cable also.

This multi-fuction does it all! wireless b/g. You connect it to your phone line and it acts as your answering machine, it discreetly records calls. It allows you to route a call if you answer the phone and it is a fax by pressing *51 and the fax will take over eliminating the need for a separate fax line line( it does the same thing if you don't answer routing the fax automatically or sending the call to voice mail seamlessly. Copies of faxes can be sent automatically to your computer as a tif file to a folder you specify giving your OCR one less copy generation to read the document and making archiving all the more easy. Pict-bridge is great with top quality photo printing. A nice spacious touch-screen for controlling it. I could go on and on but I'll stop here and let you know this is the best!

This is an excellent printer for general use. Very nice design, cheap ink (generics readily available), good performance, Nice crisp prints. The problem is the color on photos is terrible. It either looks washed out, or laughably oversaturated depending on the settings used - but never close to what I see on the monitor. My older Epson is worse in every way compared to this printer, except it prints much more accurate looking photos. Sadly. 50% of what I use my printer for is photo prints, so this is going back. Not really advertised as a photo printer, so I should have known. Too bad because I love the printer otherwise.Bottom line: General school, work, light office printer thumbs up. Photo and accurate color printing, thumbs down.

I've installed the print driver for this machine 3 times. At least it worked after the last two times. It always ends up doing the same thing. I try to scan and, no matter what interface I'm using (Photoshop, Brother's app, etc.) the pinwheel just goes for about a minute and the whole thing just quits. No message, no warning, nothing. Then, I have to reboot to get it to even recognize the machine again. So mad, you don't even know. Missed more than one midnight school deadline because of it.

I've tried Canon, Epson, and HP printers, but in my experience the Wireless Brother Printers are the best and easiest to use. We recently gave my mother her first macbook and programmed it to use voice commands to scan in photos. It's very simple for her to use, and the printer is on her wireless G network, which means she can put it anywhere in her house. For Snow Leopard users, please keep in mind that to scan you have to use preview or Image Capture to scan pictures. It won't work simply pushing the button on the printer. That may change in a driver update at some point. The bright side is, if you put 5 pictures on the scanner, Snow Leopard will automatically separate the 5 pictures into different files. This is the 3rd scanner/printer combo I've bought from brother. It's simple and the ink loads easily in the front, no taking apart of the printer will be in your future.

I bought one of these printers in June and it has been working reliably since then. I assigned a static IP address to it from my wireless router and placed it in a central location in my home. Has not failed in any task yet and the ink is lasting very well I have only observed the self cleaning once and that was late August. I think it will only waste ink self cleaning if you leave it on idling constantly, mine is set to go to sleep after 10 minutes. My only gripe about it is that you cannot preview a scanned image I had to reposition and delete several photos until I got them the way I wanted since it would not scan the full image of some 8x10". This was a minor fault for me since I don't do much scanning.UpdateI bought 2 printers one for my mom and one for me. the print head on mine died after three months. My mom's is still running perfectly. Maybe one problem is that I setup mine on my network and my mom's is connected to her pc. So mine was always on (so it was always self cleaning) and hers shuts down with her pc.

This printer gets very favorable reviews on Amazon, but I'm surprised that no one mentions how painfully slow it is. I use a wired (USB) connection, and when I send a document to the printer, there is typically a delay of at least 2 minutes before the first page starts to print, plus 2-3 minutes to print each page. And these values are for B&W text--anything with graphics takes much longer. (For instance, I've been waiting over 10 minutes for the first page of a Powerpoint presentation to emerge.) I find this unbearably slow. The print quality seems fine, but the poky speed and lack of duplexing capability are serious annoyances. My old Canon MP530 was much faster and more capable than this printer. (Quieter, too--this one makes quite a racket.)

I purchased this printer a few months ago to use for school. Since then, it has given me nothing but trouble. Brother has decided to have this printer do random "cleanings" which are loud, annoying, and use up the ink at a ridiculous rate. Also, like other Brother printers, it uses light to check the ink levels, which means it will refuse to print even if there is in left in the cartridge. After finding out how to trick the printer into thinking the cartridge was full, I was able to print more pages after the fix than before it said it was empty. Adding to that, the software is not that great and it will not save the changes you make, meaning you have to tell it every time to print in reverse etc. I will NEVER buy another Brother printer. Stay away from this horrible machine!

The printer arrived quickly with regular shipping. There was no damage and the installation instructions were clear enough. The wireless feature has worked well for both my own and my wife's desktop. The added benefit is the ability to use my wireless laptop anywhere in the house and be able to print. The only concern I have is the fact that I leave the printer on all the time. It took a little mental adjustment to be sure that the computers are online when sending something to print. We are not in business so the printer is not subject to heavy workload. It seems to fill our personal needs. Thankfully the ink cartridges are available from discount internet suppliers. This was a big part of our decision to go with the Brother MFC 490CW.
