First off, I just got this today, so I cannot comment on the long term reliability of this machine. From the initial setup and run through of its features, this is what I've come up with.Print quality is awesome. I first copied the registration card as a test. It was amazing how it came out. I couldn't really tell which was the original and which was the copy. Even the handwritten portion was reproduced flawlessly. I then decided to make use of the 5 pack of high gloss 4x5 paper which is included so I figured I'd try it out on a very small prom picture of mine. It came out perfect. I copied it right onto the 4x5...expanding it to 176% and brightening it a little using only the settings on the 885CW itself to do so. The picture came out looking flawless. I also printed a quick word document that had similarly impressive qualities...the text was very dark as opposed to my old Lexmark AIO.Then I scanned in the same picture and edited it with Photoshop. The picture looked very good at 900 pixels. No complaints there.I also tried out the fax by sending in my registration form. It was a breeze and the fax preview proved very handy. You can have it scan the paper (either by feeding it like a normal fax (ADF) or the scanning glass), then preview it, mess around with a few settings and when it's all nice and pretty, off it goes...or skip the extra steps and just send it like a normal fax as most would probably do.The cordless phone is an appreciated feature, and the speaker phone is loud and clear. Anyone who complained about the MFC-845CW's 20 second limit on incoming voice messages will be happy to know their feedback was heard by Brother. You can now select the time limit for messages, between 30 and 120 seconds.I tried out the OCR feature which allows you to scan a document onto your computer and edit the text in a word processor. I was impressed with its ability to recognize typed documents, although anything handwritten is understandably out of the question.Printing from a memory card is also simple. I did a real quick print and everything was good with it as well. There are some basic editing features on the machine, although I haven't really tried any of them and most likely won't in the future...as far as I'm concerned that's what Photoshop is for.Overall layout of the Navigation screen was nice. The widescreen was very helpful and made selecting different options simple as you can fit more in at once. Easy navigation and very basic information...Setup was a breeze with my Linksys network...taking only the push of a couple buttons and it was good to go. I've got 2 computers currently sharing this printer...one is a laptop (wireless) and the other a desktop (USB). With the laptop comes my one and only complaint...read on...I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition, Service Pack 2 on my laptop. The main program (Control Center 3) will not run on it. Whenever I try to load it, I get a terminal failure (The kind that asks to send Microsoft an error report). I did as much snooping around for a fix as I could...but didn't find anything. So I downloaded the latest set of utilities for the machine...but no help there. So this means that on my laptop right now I can still print, however I cannot receive information such as scans and such from the machine. I'm more then confident that when I get on the phone with Brother they will have a solution, or that an updated version of the program will be released fixing this. But I'll have to wait until Monday to do so.To be fair I did purchase this fairly soon after its release so bugs are understandable. And they do not specifically mention Media Center Edition as a compatible operating system although it is implied when they say XP Home. My desktop is my powerhouse anyway so I do most of the editing on their...but still it's a frustrating problem none the less.I've been through my fair share of printers...from Lexmark to HP. This is the best I've come across. I'm a very demanding consumer, and spent hours researching before making this purchase. It was the most expensive on my list of "maybes"...but I figured I'd take a chance and I don't regret it in the least. I'll probably be using this printer for at least the better part of a decade so I decided to make it a good one. As far as the software is concerned, yes it is an inconvenience, but most likely a temporary one...I'm certain many people would have docked a point or two for that, but for me the excess of quality makes up for such a blaring issue with the software...and most likely the people reading this review will not have an issue with it because I'm sure my case is fairly isolated and isn't directly related to my Operating System, rather something else that's going on. In the future I'll install it on an identical laptop with the same operating system (we have 3 in my house) and see if the problem reoccurs.Good luck with finding the right AIO for yourself. It would take a rare breed to find disappointment with

Update Sept 10: I still use this printer daily and still really like it. I wirelessly print from multiple computers seamlessly. I've stopped using the fax and now do e-faxing, but it's still used daily for my home based business. I do scanning, printing, copying with no problems. For me it's been a steady reliable printer. The only thing I have noticed is the printing has gotten really slow sometimes. I don't know if this is something with my wireless network feeding it the information to slowly or not.Update Sept 09: I like this printer a great deal more then I originally did. Once you learn how to connect wirelessly, its pretty easy to do. Sometimes my network needs to be reset and it only takes a minute or two to reconnect to it on the printer, which is nice. It's still functioning like the day I bought it, and now that I've found generic ink on amazon, I like it even more. I do have trouble receiving faxes every now and then, but I honestly without a doubt believe that's a fault in vonage service, not my brother printer. And since I send faxes more then getting them, it's not a big deal for me.UPDATE 10/26/08: I figured out the wireless problem with my HP laptop, not by actually attempting to fix it, bu just a random side effect of something else. I was removing norton anti-virus that was pre-installed on my laptop when I bought it, because it wanted me to pay to update, so I had decided to use some other free software. As soon as it was removed, my laptop was happily recognizing my brother printer icon(which tell you how much ink you have, etc). I had toyed with the firewall settings before, but removing this software made me all wireless, all the time. MUCH happier with my printer choice now.Original Review: To start, know this: I deducted a star for the problems I had with wireless and fax. I'm pretty tech savvy and hooking up to wireless isn't beyond me. I set up my home wireless network and usually my boyfriend just hopes and prays I can make it work, cause if I don't do it, no one will. I guess what I'm saying is: I know my way around computers, I'm a girl who loves her gadgets. So for a person who isn't as good with technology, they'd probably toss this out the window.I updated from an HP all-in-one because that one had stopped printing in color after only a couple years. I didn't use the color often but didnt expect it to stop working just from not using it. So, I saw this in the Staples ad for $120, it links with the wireless network and I got a free label maker(which I had been wanting, oddly enough). So I was sold. Out of the box, easy enough to start up, but the wireless network is where it gets tricky. I had wanted this printer because I have both a desktop and laptop, and get frustrated having to change computer or wire up to print. I'll say this, I HAVEN'T got it to print from my wireless laptop yet, works wirelessly with my desktop fine, don't know if it's my finiky laptop or the printer. Tried a lot of things, followed the manual, became frustrated and gave up. It's been on my to-do-list to call the brother people for about a month and 1/2. The other thing that was difficult was getting the fax to work. I use Vonage(Voip) and when I called tech support the brother guy almost had me thinking that because I used vonage, I wouldnt be using the fax. I just nearly freaked out. But we did get it working, with button hitting on my end, and calling the vonage people to have them do a couple thing for me too. So in the end, it took a couple of phone calls that make it work.I print a good deal in black and white, and occassionally in color. The color could be more vibrant, it seems more dull then on the screen. The black and white is just fine. I've scanned photos, made copies, sent faxes and received faxes. Everything is mostly as expected. I think, if I had a little set up help, I'd buy this again.

I've had a lot of printers over the years, and they usually fail after a year or two. I usually just get whatever printer works and is able to fax, scan and print, but this time around I really wanted something that worked.Cons: The first printer I got was constantly having printer jams, and I wondered if all Brother printers were like this. However, I returned the first one, got a second one and it's been pretty easy to use.Pros: Even with temporary tech issues like printer lining problems, the printer seems to know when something is wrong. It does a self-cleaning or an alignment, and I'm back in business. I've had this printer since 2007. Although there is an occasional printer jam, a quick pull on the back cover and a lift of the top and voila! Back in business. The printer cartridges seem to last longer than my other cartridges, and the price for individual cartridges are reasonable. I love that you can buy these color cartridges individually, especially considering I tend to use certain colors more than others. I can't see myself going back to a two-cartridge printer again. It's discontinued now, but I'm going to hold onto this printer for as long as possible.

In the past getting my hands on project plans has taken up a fair amount of time and money for me. This unit allows me to print usable 11 x 17 drawings from files via email or download. It has certainly paid for itself w/in the first few months of ownership. Ink cartridges last and are inexpensive to replace. Wireless communication was relatively easy to set up. I return the similar smaller unit because you had to manually feed 11 x 17 sheets.Negatives:Print speed is relatively slow, bearable for a home office but not for volume or multiple users. I recommend this unit mostly for its home office 11 x 17 ability. No convenient way to feed envelopes for printing (at least that I've found). I've kept my Lexmark all-in-one connected for that function alone.

When this machine works....it's great. Sadly it is the MOST frustrating copier I have EVER used :( The paper jams - and clearing our the paper jam memory code - is enough in it's own right to drive one bonkers. As far as using 'wirelessly'....what a joke. Have tried with 3 computers and different versions of windows and it doesn't make a difference. Others have tried to set it up as well so its not just user error. Printer states all readings are a 'go' and should work but is always 'offline'.But like I said when it does work it works great. Copies are clean and easy to read. Scanning is pretty easy as well as using the fax.

The scanner works. You can use it to fax. If you are looking for a printer, DO NOT PURCHASE! The 'starter' ink cartridges it comes with last for about a minute and then the replacements are like $20 each. You can find advice to set your printer to greyscale in order to trick the machine into still working when it is out of yellow, red, etc., but this does not work. There is a constant message that pops up when one cartridge is out of ink and it forces you to replace it before printing. Then, the cartridges will either run out fast again or dry out from non-use and you'll be buying more. Basically, Brother is a rip-off. They lure you in with low start-up costs, but then the printer ends up costing you more money than its worth.*In addition, try calling the customer service ~ you'll be speaking to someone in the ***Philippines***! I make it a personal policy to not buy products from companies that outsource jobs. In addition to hurting America's economy, they are a company that cuts corners. Hence, products that are junk.

Since I have 2 other printers; -a Brother Laser MFC 7820, and HP Photosmart Premium All In One Inkjet; both are network connected and am extremely satisfied with both. I decided to buy this Brother MFC 295 CN, also network ready; as an auxilliary printer and too, the cost of 4 generic ink cartridges are cheap.I have not used all the features of this machine. Therefore, I will restrict my gripe mainly to printing documents since I run a home office business and do a lot of document printing. The biggest problem I encounter is printing stacks of documents because of the permanent DEFAULT print setting of 1.2; -first page first, last page last. This is not convenient when printimg multiple pages. First of all, the printings comes out face up. But when printing say ...10 pages, the top page will be page ten(10) and the bottom page will be page one(1). Needless to say, I would manually have to re-sort the printed stack.I've turned on reverse printing so that it comes out 2.1; -last page in the bottom and irst page on top. This worked O.K, until you go to print multiple pages AGAIN. Because the printing setting will automatically reverts to DEFAULT which means: first page on the bottom and last pages on top.Second gripe is 2 sided printing. Print odd page number first. Then re-insert in the machine to print even numbher pages. I'll be darn! ....The back side of page one (1) is page ten (10).Other attributes of: QUITE, FAST, EXCELLENT PRINT QUALITY AND MOST OF ALL, CHEAPER INK CARTRIDGES IS GREAT. If only they can fix this problem. First time I called Brother's Cust. Support; ...no dice,...no help. Next time I call, hopefully, I'll reach someone else who has better product knowledge. This is with the hope that I did not hit a brick wall with the print settings, -meaning to say: ...it is what it is. Which means; ....it goes back!!!

I bought this machine about 1 1/2 years ago. I had originally purchased a Lexmark all in one at Sams club. The POS broke after two weeks. I took it back and bought a Brother instead. I have been very happy with this machine. Works great for on demand faxing. We do not receive faxes at home, but have to fax out ocassionally. for lite copying and printing, it works great. I have NEVER had a jam in the machine. I just purchased a new machine (Brother MFC-9320CW) to replace all 3 HP laser jet printers and the MFC-290C we have in our house currently. Based on my past experience with the Brother, I purchased another. I would put it's quality up against HP any day. Not to mention, I have not had any trouble with getting the proper drivers for windows on brother products like I have with HP. I recommend Brother to everyone. Go Brother!!

The ink is cheap but there is always something amiss with my unit. It often claims the ink heads need to be cleaned, which uses a lot of ink. Today the black ink just went out, without warning of ink low or a blockage. Loading paper in the tray can be tricky. If not loaded just right along the slop near the head of the tray, the printer will not pick up the paper.Worst of all: the unit claims to be a printer, fax, copier and scanner. The scanner will only work on the PC the printer is plugged into. There is no reason this functionality can not be shared as the printer device is. This means I can't hide this huge device in my closet. It must remain in my office.

I'm sadden to hear that this printer has caused so many problems. I bought mine over ten years ago and it wasn't until this year that it finally started to give up the ghost. Over ten years of relative trouble free operation.Around March of this year I printed a cover sheet for a project I was working on that contained this huge black area. The MFC 210c printed it just fine but it used up over half of the black ink. That was the straw that broke the camels back. After that it was never the same. No more black. I guess I could clean the heads since I believe that it's probably just clogged. I could clean the heads but the thing is ten years old. Why bother. I got me a new HP D1660 basic printer which I use as my main printer. But I'm still using the old Brother MFC 210c to FAX and to scan. They still work. I was considering buying a new all-in-one but when I read of all the problems people are having with their printers, I decided to leave well enough alone. So with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, my ten year old Brother printer soldiers on.Addendum: Autumn 2011. Found an unused pack of ink for the 210 that I had forgotten about, but it in, cleaned the heads and the thing began printing again. Back from the grave I guess. An extra 3/4 star for never say die.

So far, so good. Had it for 2 months now, and no significant problems. I do admit the reason we bought it is the ability to print 11X17, which it does just fine, once you learn to select tray 2. Automatic tray selection does not work. I saw other comments that the tray printing is a problem and that the scanner and the photo printer are not good. I don't use it for photo printing (I have an Epson for that) and the tray issue is simple if you pay attention to what you are doing and send the machine the right commands the first time. Otherwise, you are into a problem of having to clear everything out and turn the machine off to clear it as well, but these are problems you cause yourself by not remembering to click the right buttons. I don't expect it to make copies as fast as the $5,000 machine in the office, but it does everything I need, which is primarily to print 11X17 engineering drawings and to scan them. My machine seems to make acceptably good scans of 11X17 drawings as well. They are hard to tell from the originals.

Just started to print some pictures with it the other day and they looked fine. sent to my sister and she couldn't even tell the difference. Scanning is quick and easy. Overall a good product, love it over my old HP's. Only hiccup is it's attached to only home phone line (which is really only for faxing). it has a feature that's supposed to cause phone to ring with different tone when a real call comes in, which it does, but won't actually let me pick up phone. I'm thinking operator/set up error. Don't really use it as a phone anyway, was just looking for icing on the cake.

I have had this printer for about a year. In theory, it works great! Setup was relatively easy and the first month of using it went of without a hitch. I don't use it often, so I was very surprised when I ran out of ink. Especially since I usually print in grayscale only mode. How did I keep running out of colors? If you run out of one color, the machine won't do anything! It won't print, copy, fax or SCAN (which uses NO ink at all). I have replaced the yellow and magenta cartidges already once this month and now it's telling me that I need a magenta and cyan cartridge. It stopped printing a GRAYSCALE ONLY mode print job (that I have to have for work tomorrow) to tell me I now have to go to the store and buy more color! I am furious.Does anyone else have a suggestion of a RELIABLE printer??? This one is pure TRASH!

This review is simple: The 795CW is a great wireless printer, scanner, answering machine, voice recorder, and fax machine, that takes various memory cards, a usb stick, and has top-loading!!!! I love this part of the printer!!!!!However, it's ink consumption is a joke. Brother claims the print head must keep self-cleaning to ensure the nozzles don't get clogged; however, this machine will "self-clean" every time you print, during prints, and on a very busy schedule - it uses a LOT of ink. And, it's one of those printers that stops printing when one of the cartridges becomes low....not good, especially since there's still a bit left in the cartridge.Save some money and go to Cartridge World, or refill your own cartridges. At $8,000 a gallon, you'll thank yourself.Outside of that complaint, Brother made a great machine!!

UPDATE: November 2012: No changes, still working just fine. Out of production I am sure; why not look for a newer one, maybe the MFC-6890. The prices for this one and the 6890 are sky high, maybe because of the great performance over time. Was under $300 with free shipping in 2008.UPDATE: March 2012 Still working fine with no faults. I should probably buy stock in this company.UPDATE: June 2011: Still fine. One small caveat: I am into scanning a 500 page manual today and noticed that after 20-30 (~15 minutes) scans, the process pauses for about 5-10 seconds before each page. This is for manual placement on the glass (not adf). If I wait 5 minutes, it's back to normal. Then the process starts again, 15 fast, 5 slow. Wonder what that's about...maybe getting too hot for something and has to wait....? Also, It's now on a Win7 pc.UPDATE: Feb 2011 still working fine. I'll let you know if it isn't.UPDATE: June 2010: Used the wifi for the first time with a new laptop pc. Worked flawlessly with the laptop able to use it in about a minute. So now it's connecting with USB and wireless. Everything else is still working just fine. When I noticed an ink tank looking low on the software indicator and replaced it, it seemed to have a lot of ink left (shook it). I opened up the old tank and examined the low-ink signal. It is a bit crude (a float and pointer flag that the printer can "see") and will go active when the ink still has about 20% left.UPDATE March 2010: Still going strong, no problems, no jams, perfect performance.Original review in 2008:I bought the MFC-6490cw after reading the favorable customer reviews, even though I didn't have a good opinion of Brother equipment. It was a good choice. I replaced an HP Deskjet 1220c wide format printer ($400 originally) because I need ledger size scanning as well as printing and the lowest cost I have found for a ledger size scanner is about $180. I can say as a printer it surpasses the HP in every catagory. Sharper, faster, easier and more free of jams( so far).I use a USB connection and probably won't use the wifi ever, so cannot comment on this capability. One user reported that he could not use the document feeder (adf) while scanning. I can say it will definately work for scanning or copying. The adf however skews the ledger size paper too much for my needs and so I will just use the glasstop scanner position instead. The skew adjustment auto-fix feature unfortunately only works with smaller sizes.Another user complained about the auto tray selection feature. This unit will, when set up properly, auto-select the correct tray according to print size when printing only. I am using letter in tray 1 and ledger in tray 2. When copying you will have to manually select the correct tray. Evidently it isn't "smart" enough to identify the document size while scanning. Also FYI, the online description of the procedure to do next-document size selection only is incorrect. You cannot temporarily change the tray 2 paper size or type; you must change those in the setup menu only. So, use tray 1 for temporary paper size changes. It looks like the 2x ink cartridges are more cost effective since they are only slightly more expensive than the standard sizes. I have noticed that not all stores stock either size to fit this printer. The Walmart in my area only has an older non-compatible type. Be prepared to have to order these by internet.System: Win XP Pro, 2.53GHZ, wired network

The Brother MFC-490CW Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer packs a lot of useful features for the money which is what attracted me to it, especially the Wi-Fi network printing feature. However, after only 2 months I turned it on one day and the unit displayed an "AF Error" along with a very loud sound, sounded like plastic gears griding against each other. I went to the Brother website for support and was referred to a local Brother repair center in town to ship the unit to for repair. A Brother repair technician told me on the phone if they are unable to economically repair the unit (their decision) they will replace the unit with a new or refurbished model. My only disappointment from all of this would be that I end up getting a refurb instead of it getting repaired. It's at the repair center now, so we'll see. I had to pay the shipping expense to the repair center. Overall though I was very happy with the unit before it failed.UPDATE TO THIS REVIEW, date August 6, 2009. The Brother repair center replaced the malfunctioning Brother MFC-490CW Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer I sent to them with a "Factory Refurbished" MFC-490CW, rather than repairing the original MFC-490CW I sent in. The refurbished MFC-490CW I received was shipped to me packed in a plain brown colored cardboard box. I sent my original Brother MFC-490CW printer to the Brother repair center in its original, shiny and colorfully printed "retail store style" box it came in when I purchased the MFC-490CW. The Brother repair technician I spoke with on the phone *before* I shipped the defective MFC-490CW printer to their repair center told me to send the unit to them in its original shiny retail box. Not having the original retail style box anymore is a disappointment to me.A new instruction manual and four new Brother ink cartridges were included with the refurbished Brother MFC-490CW printer I received from the Brother repair center. The refurbished MFC-490CW printer I received does function as well as the defective MFC-490CW printer I had, however if I examine the refurbished Brother MFC-490CW printer I received you can tell that it is not a new unit. There are some small hairline scratches on the shiny black plastic located on the top left of the printer. The LCD display panel on the Brother MFC-490CW printer can be adjusted up and down at different viewing angles. When I adjust the LCD display panel on the refurbished MFC-490CW I received it is looser in feel and doesn't click in place as solidly as the LCD display panel on my original MFC-490CW. This makes me feel suspect of the long term reliability of the LCD display panel on the refurbished MFC-490CW I received. Everything else on the refurbished Brother MFC-490CW printer I received seems OK so far.In conclusion, I would have preferred to have received a new Brother MFC-490CW, or my old Brother MFC-490CW sent back to me repaired as new.

I love that this scanner/printer is 11x17, and very affordable, and has wifi. All that is great. However it's been a big problem for us, because:1. We were intending to manually fake duplex by running pages through a second time, and2. I need to scan color drawings on off-white paper. You cannot do manual duplex on this machine. It feeds multiple pages at once or it jams. I was trying to print my 20-page zine, and it's taken 4 hours already today due to slow print speeds, jams, multiple page feeds... a real pain. I have maybe 60 duplex sheets printed, and about 25 pages in the wastepaper bin.Secondly, the color sensitivity in the scanner is poor. I do watercolor drawings on deeply cream-toned paper, and the paper scans as pure white - obviously this means all the actual watercolors get quite washed out as well. It works well for black and white, and *sometimes* for color - but I wouldn't recommend this scanner for artists. The software is a bit limited as well; it's constantly trying to print to the wrong paper tray, hard to clear it when it gets stuck, and sometimes we can't figure out why it's still trying to go to tray 2 when we already told it to go to tray 1. More paper wasted. In the end, I think this machine would be great for a lot of people, but don't touch it with a ten foot pole if you're trying to print comics or zines or if you scan color art.

I order this printer to replace a hp that basically had the same functions but only had 8.5" x 11" capabilities. I needed a printer to do 11" x 17" for architectural and engineering plans I do as a side business. So far after a few weeks of use, the printer is functioning great. Very good print quality (I have only used b & w so far) and the copying on the glass scanner is a great feature! The two paper trays also work out nicely to have different sizes in the printer at the same time.Overall a great printer for the price! Amazon shipped for free and was to my door in 2 of 3 days.

Set up is easy, I have my desk top hard wired and the two lap tops Wi Fi'd. I'm using a 2wire867 router from AT&Tthat was a little bit of a challenge because there are no configuration instructions with the AT&T router and Ididn't dare want to call and get out sourced so the process of elimination worked for me. It just took a littlelonger. And also if your using Mozilla Firefox and you can't get the printer to work, switch to internet exploreron the lap tops. Funny the Acer laptop will only work with internet explorer and the H.P works with either. Justthought I would share my hook up issue's in case you run across the same problems. Saves a little hair pulling time. Over all its a really great printer. It's quite large so make sure you have room for it.

I received this item in perfect condition. I plugged it in and began to print and receive faxes. I ran out of black inkin 3 months and replaced the ink cartridge and it would not print in black at all. Changed the cartridge 4 times in differentnew replacements in black and still no printing in black. Prints in colors, but does not read or print black.Warranty for only 30 days from seller, Brother for one year. Am sending back machine, waiting for a replacement. Very muchof a hassle....I do not recommend this printer, if you get this one, pull out your black ink cartridge immediately and tryand put back in and see if it prints black again. Good Luck!!

I bought this printer because it presumably could fax, copy, scan, print photos, and (hopefully) print every day stuff. It worked for 3-4 weeks of very very light printing. I never did get a chance to use the fax, scan, and copy functions before experiencing virtually all the problems mentioned in previous reviews (which I unfortunately did NOT read before buying it). I have had connectivity problems requiring very time-consuming and frustrating "resets", empty ink cartridge after light use, difficulty getting printer to do anything after getting error message that one cartridge was empty (which still seems incredible), problems getting printer to print in black only, and so on. I'm tossing in the towel and agree totally with the reviewer who simply reported that this printer is so bad that one does not want to give it away or unload it on another person. My sincere recommendation: stay away from this piece of junk.

Just received the item and it appears to do what's promised, though I haven't done any photo printing yet, I think the photo print quality will be just fine, being that they included some small photo paper in the box. In my opinion, wi-fi is the only way to go for printers. USB is just another cable. I also needed a fax for the few times I get faxes every couple months and I chose this model because I didn't want the cordless phone on the higher model to get a dead battery or anything on me. I figured that this corded phone would be dead simple. The software included helps interface with the printer including sending pc faxes out through to the printer. I'm excited to hook my other computers to it to share everything. I somewhat regret not getting the fancier cordless phone model, but it's not a big deal. To me, this unit having an answering machine is an extra bonus. I would have bought it without the answering machine, but I'm happy using it. Also has a speakerphone button. It has EVERYTHING!Comes with a set of 4 inks. CMYK. I had a little fumbling with the paper tray, as it has several slider mechanisms in it to get it ready, but once I figured it out, it seems pretty simple. Just the diagram isn't much help and I was a little 'gun shy' of breaking sliders that were a little stuck. I love the touch screen and despite a couple menu items not quite in the spot i'd expect (I would have put answering machine and outgoing message recording in better menu hierarchy) it's just fine and probably won't need much changing.I just have a regular single phone line and it works as a fax.I saw this item while searching for wireless all in one, apparently it was a featured item on the home shopping network at one point, but despite those shows being often cheesy gagetry, this seems like a winner. The look of it is not super cool, but appealing enough. I feel bad replacing a perfectly excellent canon 610 scanner / printer with this, but I needed the fax and I was tired of being tethered to the computer. Plus, several of the canon printers say wireless, but only are for bluetooth camera phones. This Brother printer is true wifi, and can handle WEP, WPA and I think one other security protocols I didn't recognize. You type in the codes right on the touch screen to connect to your network. You might be wondering, where is the cat5 network and usb printer port? YES it does have them. You can't see it in the images, but in case you do need them, you can flip up part of the unit under the scanner lid and both a USB and network port are there, from there the cable can plug in and feed out of a hole in the side. I haven't done it, but I saw the ports. You must set up the printer inks and the tray / test page printing before the phone will work. You'll get a dial tone right away, but you gotta run the intial setup before you get the button functionality.I'll probably not revisit this review, but again I haven't printed out photo quality stuff yet. I doubt this printer will surpass a canon or epson photo printer, but I do think it's gonna be fine. Hopefully others will post their reviews about the printing quality here soon.If you found one or two of the epson wireless all-in-ones on here, they were more expensive at the time and didn't have a phone line. The epson wi-fi model, one of them had color correction. Please post another review so we know somebody's printing experiences with this....

I rarely print, and never in color in an attempt to avoid buying cyan, magenta and yellow. But it somehow burns through all of them in no time and will not let you do anything until you replace whichever one is out. Want to print in greyscale? Gotta replace that magenta cartridge first! I don't want to imagine how much each page has cost me. Printer was on sale when i bought it, now it costs more to replenish the ink than i paid for the whole machine.

The Amazon service was perfect. The above mentioned rate of 5 stars is for the Amazon Cutomer Service. The Brother MFC 6890 CDW arrived on promissed date. The down load disks were missing. The machine was replace within 3 days.I purchased this model mainly for 11" x 17" glass size feature and copy one side letter size to double sides, (not double to double). This met the volume of the job and the budget limit I have. I replaced my old Canon PC 850 that needed expensive repair 3 times more than the price of this one.I wish Brother had a version of MFC 9840 CDW with 11" x 17" galss. The cost of ink per page is much higher than laser but the machine is cheaper.Treat this machine gentelly, specially the paper trays. It is all thin plastic.

I bought my refurbished Brother Laser Printer HL 5140N from Fry's Electronics in 2006 for 99$, and it has been moved around and banged up several times. This printer has even followed me to college because of its reliability. I used this printer to print out several debate documents and law reviews in high school, and have probably printed over 6000+ pages. Not only that, I have only replaced the toner once (the starter toner and the current toner cart I have in there now).As for the drum unit (DR510), I have not replaced since I bought the printer several years ago. This printer keeps on chugging out papers and I have been extremely satisfied. After my parents saw my Brother laser printer still working after 4 years, my family has bought 3 more printers from Brother and they are all working fine. Brother makes fine products and I will probably use them again.

When I open them, they looked vastly different than the old ones from the printer. They did not seem to fit right. I contacted the seller, today via email, almost a year later asking for replacement. In the mean time, I went ahead a tried one of the new ones from this seller. To my surprise they worked. Additionally, with an hour of my email, the seller contacted me back telling me of how sometimes the cartridges may look different but still work. I sent a reply telling them of my mistake.Show me another retailer who will respond to an order inquiry after almost a year AND on a Sunday!!!!Rest assured you will not go wrong with these cartridges or this seller!

I love brother Printers because they allow you to use CIS, which is a at home refillable ink cartridge system, it saves so much money for someone who prints fairly often (unless you are willing to upgrade to laser), such as a college student! It is also small enough to fit on my desk, without loosing quality or having those ungodly tiny HP/epson cartridges. It is quite and works well. It has a sleep mode and uses it fairly often to it is not always on or making noise. I have 3 brother printers (one at home, one at school and one for work) and they are all very reliable, very cheap to maintain and very durable! Unless you are printing photos all the time, or need huge huge outputs, this will be a great little machine! Also it has the scan port where you can lay a lot of papers to be scanned at once, which is such a convenience the first time you have to copy more than one page.

Stay away from the MFC-5890CNGoogle "Unable to Init AF" and you will get a long, long list of queries asking how to fix this. It appears to be a common problem. It sounds like the moving bar in the scanner is jammed and a belt or gear is grinding itself to pieces everytime you try to start it up. No help from Tech Support. Will not initialize once this happens so you don't have a printer, scanner copier or fax. All you have is a @#@#$% ROCK WITH A POWER CORD AND A NETWORK CABLE!I love my Brother MFC-7440N, its a B&W Laser that I have run 30,000 pages through and it works like a champ. I've had this printer since 2005 (it is now 2010) and it no longer works. I received a message "unable to clean" and after speaking to technical support I was told it was a mechanical problem and would need to bring it in for service. As it is no longer under warranty, I would be responsible for the cost to repair it. I phoned the number that the tech support provided to me for the closest service center, which is only 15 minutes away. The guy at the service center told me that considering how much I paid for it ($130), it would make more sense for me to toss it and buy a new printer. So I am overall disappointed, because I expected it to last longer, especially considering how little I use this printer. This is my home printer, which is used very lightly (maybe 15 pages a week at most?).The print quality is not very good, but was sufficient to suit my purpose most of the times. When I wanted to print nice color brochures I would always use the printer at the office instead.I liked that this was an all-in-one, and the fax and scan features were easy to use. It does not provide a fax confirmation, although maybe there is a way to provide one using the software.

This is a printer, scanner, faxer and copier. You don't need to have it attached to a PC for it to work. The menus are wonderful, and it's very easy to use, print, copy or fax! To top it off, this is a cheap product, but of course you get what you pay for.Without realizing it, this is my third Brother all in one printer. I may sound like a satisfied customer with loyalty like mine to have three brother printers in three years, but that is because each one has broken within a year. My Brother 290C currently prints blurry, and no matter what feature I use in the wonderful menu, it cannot fix the problem.Calling technical support has put me through a never ending loop of "please clean the rollers and print another test page Sir." The people at the other end of the phone do nothing to help the problem, they merely keep telling me to use the automated roller cleaning and print another test page and see to see if its still blurry. Before I knew it I had 11 test pages all blurry. After printing out all 11 (a process that took 120 minutes, because each roller cleaning took between 5-10 minutes each time), they told me to go to a local Brother licensed repair person. They never suggested anything at all to help me other than to see repair person. I think the soul purpose of technical support is to frustrate people into not wanting help. The local Brother licensed repair person tells me that I'd be lucky to get a year out of any Brother product. He also says that my one year extended warranty doesn't cover parts and I need a part that is $40, almost as expensive as the machine! He also tells me don't buy another Brother product, so I am just presenting my experience with the Brother 290 printer. Prints great... for about 4 months, very easy to use. However, the purpose of a printer, fax, copier is to print legibly. Now I've realized that this is my third Brother printer product. The second one says that there is a paper jam, even after I have taken it completely apart and put it back together to reveal there is no paper at all. My first Brother printer product had broken buttons within 6 months and a display screen that displayed nothing.

I've had this printer for over a year. It works very well. The built-in networking is a big plus. Print speed is what you'd expect for an inkjet. Print quality is very good. I like having separate color (3) and black cartridges. I've been using non-Brother inks and the quality is still good. The printer is quiet and fits well on the desk in our home office.I use the copy feature once in a while and it works well. The automatic document feeder is a nice feature. The scanner works well for documents and photographs. The colors aren't always EXACTLY as the original but that's easily corrected with software. I like the option of being able to set custom scan settings for jobs when I have to scan several similar documents to the same directory. Works great!I don't have a land line so I don't use the Fax feature and can't say if that works well or not.One thing that is a minor pain is printing photos. The regular paper has to be removed and then ONE piece of photo paper can be put in to print ONE photo. The photo quality is very good, but it's a pain to feed the paper. I usually opt to send to Walgreens and pay $.14 per print - on photo paper no less.Overall this is a good printer. I think I paid less than $US 100 for it - a very good value.

After reading and re-reading several reviews, I chose to purchase the Brother DCP-8085dn for my home network: 3 macs and 1 vista machine. It works flawlessly: it duplex prints, scans, AND copies. Truly, an all in one. Installation for the macs was easy. I had all three networked (!) within 10 minutes. Total. The Vista machine took considerably longer. (I blame Vista, not Brother).Word of note for you mac users: double check your CPU usage after you install the software. One of the installed drivers (which isn't necessary for full function - I proved that last night) chews up CPU cycles and battery life on your laptop.
