I am on my SECOND MFC-210C in one year. My first machine broke down after only 2 months of owning it, so it was replaced under warranty. The second one that I have now is broken and of course the warranty is expired. I found out that it was an issue with the ink. If even a little drop of ink gets into the "microswitch" (what ever that is) the machine will not function, and an "unable to clean" message will appear. I paid a little of over $100 for the machine and it is going to cost $180 to fix it. The ink consumption sucks as well. I guess like another reviewer said, "You get what you pay for." My Brother MFC-210C reminds me of the fax machine from Office Space.

First of all, there are few, or maybe no other printers out there that you can just hook up to your network and just start using. Mind you, if you have a print server (Usually if bought separate this is about sixty to seventy dollars) this is not an issue, but many print servers only make the print part of the multifunction machine useful and do not include the scanner for network availability. To me this was a big thing, as I did not want to have this printer in the same room with my computer. This is a so-so printer. By now you have probably all seen in other reviews that once this printer's head wears out it is toast, there is no replacing it. Even if the printer were shot you would still have a fax and scanner to use. Printers by then will be even cheaper. I had a Brother MFC7150C prior to this and the replaceable head wore out in a about 2 years with really heavy use. This is the oddity with Brother, the head is resident in the printer and not in the replaceable cartridge. They say this makes the cartridges cheaper, but I don't find that it makes that much of a difference in the price, especially, if you have to foot the bill for a a hundred dollar head. Mind you this is probably why they opted not to make this printer have a replaceable one.Sturdyness of this printer is a bit light, the paper cartridge seems frail and is somewhat prone to jamming. The software was a bit buggy and I had to get updates on the web right away. I installed this in a network where the computers used Window XP and 2000. There was a little bit of messing around, but it quickly got to working.Given the price it seems like a good buy and I paid a little more than the current price listed here. The print quality isn't that crisp but okay for reference and college level documents. If you want it for a professional presentation this may not be good enough. However one thing to consider, is given the fact this is not a Picture quality printer, you might also own a picture quality printer and any professional documents could be made on that one, so this printer's quality wouldn't be an issue.Another reason I bought this printer is that the scanner has both a flatbed and feed option. This is cool if you want to scan an article or recipe in a book as well as copy or fax loose paper. My old Brother had only the feed mechanism and this is not useful if you want to scan a bulkier item. However, if you only have a flat bed and have lets say 10 documents to scan, a flatbed can be a chore. This is the best of both worlds. All in all a good buy considering the price.

I was really tickled to find an all-in-one with so many capabilities at such a great price. I am easy on equipment, so the cheap feel didn't bother me. I had a bunch of stuff to fax and it even faxed legal documents with ease. Copying was great and printing was okay, but not as crisp and clean as the HP it replaced. It began to take longer and longer for it to start printing and when it turned into days, I deleted the printer setup and added a new printer. Worked at first then took longer and longer again. Called tech support when an interium document failed to print and they told me to delete the setup (with the document) and add a printer. Second call I was told there was a problem with my laptop although this was the only problem peripheral including several other printers. The end of the line was trying to print 30 standard business envelopes - the first 5 (acceptable looking, but not good) took 3 hours with 15 trashed even feeding them 1 at a time. In the next 3 hours, I returned the MFC-5440CN and bought a networkable HP at about twice the price (but what is the cost of fighting with the printer and tech support).

Really, Don't bother with this one. I'm from England and the've discontinued it here. I've had it just over a year. The printing started fading on the right of the page so I bought a new toner. This didn't solve the problem. So I followed the troubleshooting advice and bought a new drum. This didn't solve the problem. I emailed Brother. They rang back (quite promptly) and after cleaning a piece of glass inside, it still didn't work. Finally they suggested I take it to be overhauled. The people I contacted at last gave me some sound advice. "Bin it"Probably the last time I use Brother!

I have a Brother 1840C fax machine. I didn't need the color capability when I bought it, never used it and I still don't. But every day the machine "cleans" itself, using a little of the color inks. And when any cartridge is empty, the entire machine stops working. You have to buy new color cartidges even if you never use them, because the machine makes sure they're used up over a few months. I bought this machine because I thought the consumables would be appropriate. Now I'm off to the supply store to buy Cyan and Magenta just so I can print out a black and white fax. Grr!!!!

summary: definitely a great bargain for occassional and lite-weight home usei bought the brother mfc 210c after much deliberation during the thanksgiving sale. i wasn't sure if this would be all it was touted to be, but decided to take a chance anyways because of the awesome price. I've been using this thing for nearly 4 months now and i've been pretty pleased with it.installation was a breeze. followed the steps and was done in a few mins.i occassionly send out business letters and print envelopes and this serves my needs pretty well. one thing i do find awkward is the loading and uloading of the paper tray: doesn't have separate feeds for envelopes and normal a4 papers. if you want to print on an envelop or different sized paper, you have take the entire tray out, remove the old papers, adjust the size of the feed by hand and place the tray back in. and once you're done, you have to repeat the steps to set things right again. but for the price (~$70 after rebates) i'm happy.the printer isn't very smart: if you manually set the paper tray size to a com10 envelope, but forget to set it to the correct size in the software, sometimes the printer causes smudges. (i guess i've been pampered by high end printers at work and school)didn't come with a usb cable, but got one for $5 at sams. i like the fact that the cartridges are separate so don't have to waste an entire cartridge if one color gets over.i've printed a few photos on glossy paper and the performance has been pretty good. you have to make sure that the "finest" setting is selected in the photo mode for things to be spiffy.the scanner is pretty quick for most things, but slows down terribly if you push it to 2400x2400 :) (wat'd u expect??)the photocopy option is by far the simplest: just put the document on the window and hit the copy button. works like a standard photocopier, don't have to go to the comp at all. scanning also promises to be the same, but hitting the button on the MFC ususally ends up scanning the whole flat-bed area, which is dumb. i'd rather bring up the twain import menu and preview what i'm going to scan in.quirks: every day around 10:30 or so, the printer "wakes" up and does something. the manual says the printer will clean itself periodically even when in stand-by.havne't used the fax at all.

I needed something cheap for faxes, copying, and scanning (I already own a laser printer for printing). The 210C looked like the perfect choice with its egonomic design and small foot-print. Problem is, I can't get the damn thing to work! It makes this loud winding sound upon boot-up, and stays in "Cleaning Mode". All other button functions become disable. So now I gotta take this thing back - and I hate taking things back.

I had always thought that Brother manufactured good products over the years from what I had seen and heard, so I finally decided to give them a try. But this turned out to be a big mistake...To begin with, what's good about this machine is that the normal functions it was dsigned to do for you work fine. The machine prints, copies, scans, and faxes at an acceptable level. But the quality of the color when printing is not as good as compared with my $45.00 Epson C40UX printer that someone gave me as a gift. The real problem with this machine lies in how fast it uses ink and the fact that it shuts down all functions whenever one of the four ink cartridges needs replacing.I've had the machine for about 8 months now and at most I've printed maybe 100-150 pages with it. And all the pages have been 100% black ink only. Still, over this time I've had to replace the black ink and color ink cartridges two times since I purchased the machine. For some reason this machine goes through its color ink cartridges even when you're printing only requires black ink. I basically use this machine for incoming faxes and occasional copies only, and during most weeks I don't even print a single page with it.In addition, when the machine indicates that you need to replace one of the ink cartridges, it stops all printing, copying, and fax functions until you replace that particular cartridge! So if people are faxing you something important, the fax will be quietly stored in the machine until you replace the ink cartridge. This is extremely disappointing that you aren't given the option of printing out the fax if you'd like to before you replace the ink cartridge. Plus, you may be waiting for an important fax not even knowing that it's already arrived because you see that no fax paper has been printed out from the machine.Because of this and the fact that my Epson printer finally stopped working, a few days ago I upgraded to a HP Photosmart 2610 all-in-one, and so far it performs beautifully. But of course, the proof in how it really performs will come in the months ahead after I've had a chance to spend some more time with it.But with respect to the Brother MFC-3820CN all-in-one, I really recommend that you look around and find a machine that doesn't have the problems that I've just described to you. There are so many other machines on the market in the same price range that don't have these same problems, and you'll easily find a much more reliable machine that will also save you tons of money on replacing your ink cartridges.

It si doing an amazing job.Scanning - Offcourse the software comes with it doesn't have too many options and it can do a simple scan quite and in no time.Faxing - It is doing a wonderful job so far.Copying - No complaints. It is doing what it offers.Regular printing - Do not use it that much, but it foudn to be doing it good.Photo printing _ I replaced my canon and one other printer with this one. I printed about 300 images before I change the catridges. Print quality is very good. I used matte and glossy papers. The best part is the cheaper catridges. get two sets of catridges from abcink.com for 26$ ???????? Real good deal.

I had the twin of this model, the 420CN. The only difference between the 2 is the 420CN has a photo center which at the time I thought was a great deal so I wouldn't have to kneel down and plug my digital camera into the back of my computer. Now I've found out that there are devices you can purchase that will do this. The 5440CN has a better resolution scanner, larger capacity document feed and a faster fax modem. These are the biggest differences. I had bought the 420CN. It gave me error messages after installing the ink cartridges. I called Brother tech support in case I was doing something wrong. They walked me throught the process again and confirmed the unit was defective. They offered to send me out another one immediately and I could return the defective unit via Fedex. The replacement model looked refurbished. It came in a plain cardboard box with no advertising stickers on the unit like a new one has. So did I pay full retail price for a refurbished unit? But this is the BIG PROBLEM!!!!!! I'm not happy with the quality of the scanner after using it. The retailer will not return the unit because it is not in ORIGINAL PACKAGING!!! I informed Brother of this situation and told them I would like to get one of THEIR units, the 5440CN instead of the 420CN which is the same price. They would not swap it!!! They said they only swap out defective models for the same model number!! Their actions, however, sending me a refurbished unit as a replacement unit for a brand new one is an OUTRAGE!!! Because of this I cannot return this unit which is less than a week old back to the retailer!! I'm considering Small claims court against a corporation. Think twice no three times at least before buying from Brother on second thought don't buy at all from them. If they treat a brand new customer like this how do you think they are going to treat you down the line???

I purchased this printer a week ago and have been very pleased it's performance for the money. It's not a printer you'll want to use for your photo printing but everything else is great. I purchased it after looking at Cannon, HP and Lexmark printers. HP (7210)was the only printer with a network card but it cost $269 and does the same things this printer does.It was easy to set up on the network and I can now access it from all three of my computers as if it's connected directly. While you can hook most printers to a printer server on your network, most only work in an omni directional mode and won't allow you to see ink levels, etc. The fax and copy features also worked great and I've had no connection problems. Yes, it's a little flimsy, but it less than half the cost of an HP and it's got a network card.Overall, I'm very pleased with the printer and would buy one again. Amazon as always was great to work with and delivered the printer when they said they would with no tax or shipping.

My wife purchased this device for our business office in Feb of 2005. My first thoughts were very good, as we have had Brother printing / faxing devices all along and had years of reliable affordable service from them. This model did it all, it faxed, it scanned,it copied , it printed , there is a phone and it even hooked up to our network ! Delight soon turned to dread as the MFC 5440cn did none of these things well ( maybe this is not completely fair as I don't believe we ever scanned anything ). This unit has the most flimsy paper tray I've ever seen , highly proned to paper jams , the ink is expensive, very slow printing , always beeping because of an often un-determined problem and I've had more problems faxing and recieving a fax than ever. It does look nice, but my in business it must be dependable . Maybe this multi functional unit is better off in home use . I've relieved this unit of it's duties and TRASHED IT. Now the miserty of "will it work" is over. I don't know what we'll buy next but it won't be another MFC 5440cn.

Excellent little portable home or office do-it-all. Very compact and light for a machine of this type. Fairly easy instructions to get set up. Copy and Fax functions simple and straightforward. Can't comment on photo capture feature since I don't have a digital camera; card slot feature in front and instructions will help when you're ready. Scan feature something of a mystery to me; my first attempts didn't have the results I expected, but with practice I'm sure this will change, since I've never had this feature on previous machines. Only negative thing (to me, that is) is that the colors seem a little flat but they are color, no doubt about it. Great for start-up home businesses or extended biz trips. When you compare the cost vs. features, and cost vs. other sellers, it's a big winner in my book!

Bit of a short review. I must disagree with negativity surrounding wasted ink. I do alot of color printing.. and nothing annoys me more than a cartridge that doesn't allow room for refilling that cartridge. It's a waste of time and a mess. Lexmark and now especially HP's newest cartridges do this. #56 and #57 don't even last the lifetime. They are so bad they die before I can refill it. Caused many a thrown object. I hate the 1200 and 1350 PSC from HP so much , I'm tossing the brand new 1350 out the window when I get a brother. I'm reviewing moms. I'm so jealous of moms I'm getting one. HP sent me the 1350 after the 1200 busted it's guts inside. By the time it was sent, both the printer gears and scanner gears were broken. Never again HP. The brother's are simply the best way to go if you refill ink. Which is far cheaper than buying Brother cartridges outright. 123inkjets dot com sell these custom carts that are even easier to refill than refilling the brother cartridges. No drilling of holes to speak of. The brother cartridges I simply adore. Very similar to the CFS (continuous flow systems) I've been seeing for certain Epson printers. And with a fax machine attached to it. ... Why would one go anywhere else. Maybe the Canon, but avoid HP and Lexmark. Unless your rich. And can afford the $25-40 cartridges. The brother printers are a refillers dream. The only possible downside is paper jams. But I can take a paper jam any day compared to bad ink cartridges.

This printer prompted me to write my first Amazon review. As other reviewers have also pointed out, the printer uses ink continuously even if no printing occurs through its "cleaning" process. Furthermore, even if you only require b&w printing, all four colors must read full. I receive only a few faxes and print 20-30 pages a year. After one year and less than 50 pages, all ink has "evaporated." That works out to nearly $2 per page and replacement ink prices mean that it would continue to be about $2 per page for the life of the printer. However, I'm kicking the habit and throwing it out.Brother's crack cocaine marketing strategy hooks you with a cheap printer that is designed to drink ink and then sells you ink fixes to keep you going.Don't buy 210c! Don't buy Brother! Say no to crack!

Called Brother again with this information - they said they would pay for the new printer head if I take it to an authorized Brother dealer. Wasted fuel to drive to an authorized dealer - 8 weeks later, with the new printer head installed - the dealer adviced that other error codes in the machine would not make the printer work. The auhorized dealer now no longer repairs Brothers due to very poor customer service. [...] The scanner works great, the printing works great too, good photo printing even on plain paper! Card reader works, I use it with my Lexar/Olympus 512mb, Kodak 32mb, and Fujifilm 16mb xD-picture card that came with my E510 Digital Camera. This is my second All-in-one printer. The first one (MFC-7300C) I bought it around Christmas of 01'. It was slow, and I would get paper jams, and ink errors all the time.. But this AIO has a flatbed scanner, dual paper trays, media card reader etc. At first I had a hard time putting in the ink, finally (small framed me) got my mom to do it, because she is bigger and stronger than me. I haven't tried out the networking function yet. But like the MFC-7300C the new MFC-5840CN has some problems too, besides ink installing problems, coping is kinda on the slow side, no cables come with the printer like the USB or Ethernet cable, [...] Sometime the scanner functions stops working and I'll have to un-plug and re-plug the printer to get the printer working right again, this has happen 3 times already, I still can't get why this happens? Don't know if this is only happening to me or not? And as a matter of fact, when you run out of ink in one ink cartridge, like the black for instants, the printer won't work until you'll replaces the one emtpy cartridge. kinda dumb huh? I didn't have this problem with my old Xerox printer. I still recommend this cheap AIO printer, because it everything you want in a AIO, and more! There is a even a cheaper model(MFC-5440CN), this model doesn't have the media card reader, nor, does it have the etxra paper tray, but it has everything else the 5840CN have...Pros:Networking, media card reader, dual paper trays, fast printing and scanning, good photo prints even on plain paper.Cons:Slow coping, no color LCD, problems with installing ink, No USB or Ethernet cable included, for some reason the scanner function stops working, have un-plug and re-plug in the printer to get it working again, when one ink cartridge runs out, you aren't able to print anything until you replaces the empty cartridge..Recommended: Yes

For $100 (after rebate), this device seems tough to beat. First of all, it definitely works as advertised. We have a small wireless network set up at our house that includes a Mac running OS X Tiger and a PC running Windows XP. Set up was a breeze. It was literally as simple as plugging the device into the ethernet router, installing the software on both machines, and within minutes i had both computers printing and scanning. I assume the USB set up is as easy if not easier. Some people seem to complain about Brother's support, but I haven't had a need for it yet - so I can't comment on that.I was looking for an all in one device (mostly for printing and scanning) and chose this device after reading many reviews about its capabilities and its compatability with both Macs and Windows. My primary goal was to find a scanner that would allow me to archive the ever growing mountains of paper that seem to clutter our home. And this machine handles that task with ease. The auto document feeder is a MUCH more efficient way to scan multiple sheets at a time, while the flat bed allows for some versatility when scanning odd shaped or bounded documents. And the OCR software included is amazing (haven't tried on the PC yet, but works great on the Mac). Combined with Tiger's 'spotlight' feature, it makes searching for the scanned OCR document a breeze.Anyway, i would highly recommend this to anyone using Mac OS X or Windows XP - especially if you are looking for an easy way for multiple computers to print/scan from one device.

This printer wastes ink and shuts down when ink runs low. You can't even send a fax if you run out of one of the inks. Also, mine shows that the ink is empty when there is actually ink left.I recommend a printer from a vendor that is working to help you and your business, noe one that *seems* to be focused on getting you to buy un-needed ink.You can, however, put black electrical tape over part of the cartridge to continue printing and faxing when it claims ink cartridges are empty.

For cost/benefit, I've been impressed with all the Brothers I've bought, both those for home (5050 B&W Laser and the multifunction 420CN). I also own 2 additional 5050s at my office and have had no problem with them. Suffice it to say that I've had precisely the opposite experience with HPs, with major, irreparable breakdowns in within 6 months of warranty expiration on each one. Plus, Brother has a neat philosophy of common sense cartridge replacement - if your color HP cartridge runs out, you have to replace the whole thing for $50 or so right then. Brother, on the other hand, allows you to replace individual color cartridges (black, cyan, yellow, red) as they run out, for $10 to $15 apiece. Lots of savings. My Brother B&W lasers were cheaper than equivalent quality competing brands, so I wasn't expecting much, but they've been basically flawless for 2+ years now and exceeded the rating on the toner cartridge by hundreds of pages.

This printer seems great at first, but will annoy you to death in the long term. The main issues are:1) -NOTHING- on the printer works once the printer is out of ink. You can't send faxes, scan, or print B+W if any one of the ink colors is out.2) The printer believes ink cartridges are empty long before they are. I have just removed a yellow cartridge with at least 1/3 of the ink left which the printer refuses to use.3) The printer uses LOTS of ink to clean itself several times a day.4) Print quality degrades over time- look for choppy/streaky blacks in the first 6 months.5) Network support is completely undocumented and poorly supported.6) Technical support, even web-based, is horrible and useless.Do not buy this printer.

Working both on wired and wireless devices. Since the cheapest printer server boxes are around $35 for a single port and don't support scanning, this is a really good deal.Print quality is more than acceptable considering the low page cost. Black is good enough for business coorespondence, color is excellent for graphics and OK for photo. If you need super quality, you need something with 6 or more color tanks. This one is just for everyday printing and does the job.At this price point, you can buy one and use it for 20,000 pages which is when the print head goes. Cost to replace the print head runs around $100 at the local brother service place. Just throw it away and buy another new printer.Great for a small office or home network!!!

Just like many of the other reviewers said, this machine was designed to syphon ink (and money) even if you are not using it. It supposedly cleans itself every so often (using some of the ink to do so). Even though I never used the color ink, it kept beeping and indicating empty color ink cartridges and will not print even in black until you replace those cartridges. This is one of the worst machines that you can buy and I am sure that the company has heard many complaints about it, but they seem to have one thing on their mind and that is to rip you off by designing such an ink waster even when the machine is not in use.I gave it a one star rating only because the choices did not have a zero star which is definitely what it deserves.

I PURCHASED THIS FAX FOR $99.99 WITH A $40.00 REBATE.THIS UNIT CAN FAX AND PRINT IN COLOR AND BLACK. THE PRINT IS VERY CLEAR.I CONNECTED THIS UNIT TO MY PC WITH A USB 2.0 CABLE,IT CAN'T BE OVER 6' LONG .THIS IS A PLUS BECAUSE YOU CAN PRINT FROM YOUR PC.IT HAS A 300 PAGE MEMORY AND 10 ONE BUTTON INSTANCE PHONE NUMBERS CONNECTOR.THERE ARE 4 INKJET CARTRIDGES WHICH IS GREAT BECAUSE YOU CAN REPLACE THE COLOR THAT IS NEEDED.THE SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD IS VERY SLOW FROM THE WEB SITE ONLY.I HAD TO TRY 4 TIMES BEFORE I GOT THE PRINTER AND FAX SOFTWARE.I RECOMMEND THIS FAX OVER A TONER FAX ANY DAY. IT HAS A QUICK SETUP AND A LARGE OWNER MANUEL TO EXPLAIN ALL THE FEATURES.THIS MACHINE REALLY LOOKS NICE AND EXPENSIVE.IT IS A GREAT BUY AND THE $40.00 REBATE IS A PLUS.

Good printer if you print a LOT. If used occasionally, it's very hi cost per page because you will replace all cartridges frequently regardless of how much you've used it. But since the ink cartridges are only reservoirs (no electronics), I resorted to refilling them with bulk ink, which worked for about 4 refills. Then, the print head clogged up and I couldn't get it cleaned out. Had to junk the printer after one year of use.

I purchased this printer about 6 months ago. Overall it is a decent printer. The black and white and color prints are good quality. The copier and fax work well, no problems. The sheet feeders is OK but what do you expect at this price. However one thing really ticks me off and is the requirement of the printer that you can not have any empty color carts. If any of the color carts are empty then you can not print at all even if it is only black and white. I have never owned a print that worked like that. I think that the printer failing to print black and white just because my yellow cart is out is crap. Even though I think it works well as a printer these little nickle and dime operations to bleed me for more of my money drive me towards other printer brands.

The printer doesn't work when one of the inks is empty. This is ridiculous considering that for an average user this situation could happen every month. The product is practically unusable. Do not recommend for home or small office use.

NEVER EVER BUY THIS PRODUCT. I concur with all negative reviews. The ink simply evaporates away even when you don't use it. Cost of ownership is extremely high. You have to buy all the 4 cartridge for it to work, even if you need only black one.I have trashed this product as you can buy a new printer with the cost of 4 cartridge replacement for this stupid product.Brother company is simply giving this product for cheap to get continuous ink order, which is far more profitable for them. This machine will not take third party ink or refillable ink.stay away from it

I find this machine to be a great value. Works well. Prints quality photos. Nice to have an auto fax machine that receives without manual intervention. The network ready feature is a super plus for those who have a home network. Of most value for me is the 35 page sheet feeder. This makes the combined functionality of the MFC super. I have 3 friends who also purchased this model. All are satisfied. Found generic ink cartridges at meritline.com and purchased a 64 cartridge pack (16 sets) which we split; made it a great value.

I went shoping for a new printer a few months ago, originally shopping for a color injet (NOT All-In-One) for my start-up business. I wanted to be able to be able to give my cliets color prints of simple things like invoices, diagrams, or product photos. When I got to the store, I came accross the MFC-5840CN by Brother and was amazed by the number of features for under $200. I had a Lexmark X85 I was replacing and that thing was a pile of junk, and made me cautious of All-In-Ones. After a few days of online research I decided to buy the Brother (my first Brother product) printer and let me say this think is awesome! For a printer it does a good job, with good B&W as well as color prints. Now I have not tried photo paper, but it prints better then I expected and seems good (I'm not a photographer- I just want some color in my documents!). I REALLY like the fact that it has built-in 10/100Tx networking as well because I do have a few computers as well as a wireless laptop I use it from (BOTH PC and Mac).As a Fax machine the MFC once again does a good job. I was suprised that the machine supports the "Distinctive Ring" feature and has not failed once to pick up my distinctive ring number I use as a fax line. It also has not once picked up my regular voice ringer. I can tell the fax machine as well as copier which paper tray to use as well, which is cool. I very much like the auto-feeder it makes everything that is more then one page that much easier to copy and fax.I have used the fax-from-pc and that works great too. From wired and wireless computers around my house I can send faxes, print, and access the memory card slots! In conclusion I must say that this is a excelent printer, especially considering the price. I have also bought two for some clients who like it very much with no problems so far. I hope this helps you!

Check out the reviews of older Brother MFC units. They have a serious problem with ink consumption that is intentionally designed to force customers to buy unnecessary ink cartridges. I suspect that this problem remains in the newer models. Due to a self-cleaning function, the Brother machines constantly use up ink by sqirting small amounts through the inkhead. So, even if you NEVER print in color, the color ink cartridges will run dry in a few months. You are then forced to but new cartridges because the machine will not print at all if any one of the four cartridges is "empty." The self-cleaning function cannot be disabled. Most people use black ink most of the time. They will be surprised, therefore, to find that they actually have to buy color cartridges just to keep printing in black. Another problem is that the machines often sense that a cartridge is empty when it is still half full. No matter, it shuts down the machine. You have to replace the cartrige. Some people claim to have gotten around this problem by using black electrical tape to cover the area of the cartridge that is viewed by the ink-sensing LED light. Beware of Brother! Don't buy unless you confirm that this problem has been corrected by Brother.

Any Brother MFC model that will not print because one cartridge is out of ink can be overridden by putting black tape on the front of the empty cartridge. (See fixyourownprinter.com for details.) The MFC if a terrific buy at $84. I've had an MFC for about a year. It prints well and is a very good copy machine. I have not used the fax. I like the MFC. Some have problems with the print head, but Brother seems to covering this pretty well. If you have the guts, it is easy to refill!

I bought this machine about a week ago and have used almost all of its features. I am very impressed with the quality, user interface, and versatility. It's pretty easy to program and the user manual is pretty good, and they also have an 800 number for support which I called. Their support was pretty good, although the person I spoke with seemed to need a different job.I agree with the previous post that the scanning software could be better, but most programs have scanner acquisition built in so it's not a big deal. But I will say that even though the machine has a special button to press for scanning, there isn't a section in the user's manual about scanning. Must have been an oversight. But it was not that difficult to figure out. I was totally amazed at how great the print quality was when I printed photos from a Kodak CD that I had made when I processed prints. The prints I made were superior to the photographs in that they were much more vibrant and alive than the photos. I used Epson Glossy Photo Paper which I got at a warehouse club. I have only used the doc feeder a few times. This was one of the reasons why I chose this machine because the feeder was built better than the competition and it's a real time-saver. But it has worked flawlessly in the few times I've used it. Faxing works great and you can even keep the machine off and it will turn itself on when it senses a fax coming in. Copying is very good too. Print quality is very good, but it's not laser quality; it's definitely an inkjet. I have a laser as well, so this does not bother me. I have not used the network feature or the interface for digital camera media. I did a lot of research on the other products and came very close to buying a similar HP costing about a hundred dollars more. But I am glad I didn't. This is an amazing machine for the very reasonable price. It's well built, has a nice fit and finish and works very well. It could be a little smaller, and I also hear that it's good to cover so that dust doesn't enter through the paper tray, drying the rollers and interfering with paper uptake. And sometimes it can be a little slow in faxing or printing very high quality photos. Don't believe the number of pages per minute either, since that's based on a page with only 5% filled. But those are not deal breakers if you use the machine for what it is intended -- it's not a machine to get if you expect to print a hundred color-saturated pages or photos a day -- it's a light-medium duty machine. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase. Hopefully it lasts as long as my last Brother fax of over 12 years -- which is still going strong. One last thing. Don't underestimate the value to having separate ink cartridges like the Brother. Other companies like HP put all of the colors in one ink cartridge requiring that you buy the entire cartridge when one color runs dry. The Brother has 4 different cartridges assuring that you get your money's worth from each. This is one of the dirty little secrets to color printers -- they sell you the printer cheaply and then you pay through the nose for ink for the printer's lifetime.

I have had a wonderful experience with this 6 in one printer. For what this machine does and how little it cost and the compact size, I will recommend it over and over again. It prints beautiful pictures, totally over and beyond what I expected. The picture resolution is excellent. It does not print anything faded till it runs out like other printers do. The job is always perfect. It is true that it does not print anything in black ink once any of the other colors finish and that is a little annoying but the ink does not cost that much and it does say so in the printing preferences if you care to look. A pack of the 3 colored ones costs $29.99 in office max (they also come separate) and the black ink is not expensive either. The ink does not finish any faster than the other ink jet printers I have used and the print quality is better. I have had this from November of 2004 and did not replace the black ink for 6 months and the colored for even longer. For home use it's great, almost pefect. I would give it 95%!!!

I am surprised at all the negative feedback. I don't have any problems with ink runing out and all these additional expenses. At Inkjet123.com I bought 10 cartiges for $28.07 (3black and 2 of each color), all brand new and work great.I have had this printer for over 1 and 1/2 years and have found it to be very reliable (printing,fax,pictures,etc.). This printer replaced a $276.00 Lexmark (junk). The price is right and the printer works like a charm.Very satisfied with the product.

I bought one of these after reading the bad reviews on the HP5610. I have been very pleased so far. We have a small environmental consulting and compliance services business and I use this for faxes, color printing and for scanning when we are not using the Fujitsu high speed scanner. Our other printer is an HP 4200 for high speed printing of larger docs. The 5440 has done everything I asked. It was easy to install and with a $30 rebate coming from Officemax, it was cheap at $99.00. I bought this instead of the MFC5840, because I didn't need the media card slots and photo printing for $50 more. The quality of the color printing is good enough for color diagrams, maps, etc. that I review. This is my first Brother product and time will tell if I am satisfied long term, but so far it was a good purchase.

This really is a lot of printer for the money... as everyone has already said, so I'll keep this review to what I can add that is unique. For such a big honking device, you should be able to fit more paper in the load tray. And envelopes... I can only get 7 envelopes in a time without causing a paper jam. And you have to pull the tray out every time to load them, because if you push them all the way in, the printer jams. Don't push it in enough, it doesn't acknowledge that there is any paper in there.Bottom line:Good Multifunction printer for small office work, unless you want to print to envelopes. If you plan on doing any mailings, you will need to print to labels instead, which is just more work :(
