I hooked the MFC-5490CN up to my home wired network and was quickly able to print to it from my wired linux workstation and my wireless Win7 laptop. Scanning to the linux workstation was also easy and quick to set up.I have two quibbles with the printer, both related to its fax capability. First, it's not really compatible with a phone line that has voice mail. I could buy an answering machine to go with the setup, but it would be really great if the printer had an answering machine built in. Second, the linux fax software can only fax postscript files direct from the computer. This is an awfully limiting restriction, and it would be nice if Brother could write better linux fax support software. On the whole, though, it's a very satisfactory product.

Any machine that will not allow you to switch to black and white printing when you are out of a color ink is a waste of money. I've had to run to out to buy ink at ungodly hours of the day and night when printing for business purposes. The quality is OK but it also forgot my network every 2-3 weeks while my computers were still connected to network. Copies are really smudged looking as well. So much hate for this product.

Unless you like to torture your self DO NOT BUY! i just want to throw it out the window! It's constantly giving me an error message, the most popular one is Paper Jam.. the day that it does not says that i am surprise! It wont print any color not even black if you are low in any other ink. It does not even want to scan, nothing! it consumes a lot of ink...!! its just a horrible piece of machine i would only recommend to someone i really did not like so they can get a stress attack.

I got this one my other Brother all=in-one died after years of very hard work. Love the dual trays! Love the Apps! Love the cheap ink! Love the two sided printing even though I'm still trying to get it to work! I really do love this thing. The wireless set up is EASSSSSSYYYYYYY!! It even looks neat as He!! ! The wireless connection is just as fast as the wired I think! I would give this thing six or maybe even seven stars if I could. The ink price and consumption is way better than my HP I can print from my iPhone to this! This has more features than I know what to do with~! I have had this for months now and I have no complaints at all!

First off, I just got this today, so I cannot comment on the long term reliability of this machine. From the initial setup and run through of its features, this is what I've come up with.Print quality is awesome. I first copied the registration card as a test. It was amazing how it came out. I couldn't really tell which was the original and which was the copy. Even the handwritten portion was reproduced flawlessly. I then decided to make use of the 5 pack of high gloss 4x5 paper which is included so I figured I'd try it out on a very small prom picture of mine. It came out perfect. I copied it right onto the 4x5...expanding it to 176% and brightening it a little using only the settings on the 885CW itself to do so. The picture came out looking flawless. I also printed a quick word document that had similarly impressive qualities...the text was very dark as opposed to my old Lexmark AIO.Then I scanned in the same picture and edited it with Photoshop. The picture looked very good at 900 pixels. No complaints there.I also tried out the fax by sending in my registration form. It was a breeze and the fax preview proved very handy. You can have it scan the paper (either by feeding it like a normal fax (ADF) or the scanning glass), then preview it, mess around with a few settings and when it's all nice and pretty, off it goes...or skip the extra steps and just send it like a normal fax as most would probably do.The cordless phone is an appreciated feature, and the speaker phone is loud and clear. Anyone who complained about the MFC-845CW's 20 second limit on incoming voice messages will be happy to know their feedback was heard by Brother. You can now select the time limit for messages, between 30 and 120 seconds.I tried out the OCR feature which allows you to scan a document onto your computer and edit the text in a word processor. I was impressed with its ability to recognize typed documents, although anything handwritten is understandably out of the question.Printing from a memory card is also simple. I did a real quick print and everything was good with it as well. There are some basic editing features on the machine, although I haven't really tried any of them and most likely won't in the future...as far as I'm concerned that's what Photoshop is for.Overall layout of the Navigation screen was nice. The widescreen was very helpful and made selecting different options simple as you can fit more in at once. Easy navigation and very basic information...Setup was a breeze with my Linksys network...taking only the push of a couple buttons and it was good to go. I've got 2 computers currently sharing this printer...one is a laptop (wireless) and the other a desktop (USB). With the laptop comes my one and only complaint...read on...I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition, Service Pack 2 on my laptop. The main program (Control Center 3) will not run on it. Whenever I try to load it, I get a terminal failure (The kind that asks to send Microsoft an error report). I did as much snooping around for a fix as I could...but didn't find anything. So I downloaded the latest set of utilities for the machine...but no help there. So this means that on my laptop right now I can still print, however I cannot receive information such as scans and such from the machine. I'm more then confident that when I get on the phone with Brother they will have a solution, or that an updated version of the program will be released fixing this. But I'll have to wait until Monday to do so.To be fair I did purchase this fairly soon after its release so bugs are understandable. And they do not specifically mention Media Center Edition as a compatible operating system although it is implied when they say XP Home. My desktop is my powerhouse anyway so I do most of the editing on their...but still it's a frustrating problem none the less.I've been through my fair share of printers...from Lexmark to HP. This is the best I've come across. I'm a very demanding consumer, and spent hours researching before making this purchase. It was the most expensive on my list of "maybes"...but I figured I'd take a chance and I don't regret it in the least. I'll probably be using this printer for at least the better part of a decade so I decided to make it a good one. As far as the software is concerned, yes it is an inconvenience, but most likely a temporary one...I'm certain many people would have docked a point or two for that, but for me the excess of quality makes up for such a blaring issue with the software...and most likely the people reading this review will not have an issue with it because I'm sure my case is fairly isolated and isn't directly related to my Operating System, rather something else that's going on. In the future I'll install it on an identical laptop with the same operating system (we have 3 in my house) and see if the problem reoccurs.Good luck with finding the right AIO for yourself. It would take a rare breed to find disappointment with

Update Sept 10: I still use this printer daily and still really like it. I wirelessly print from multiple computers seamlessly. I've stopped using the fax and now do e-faxing, but it's still used daily for my home based business. I do scanning, printing, copying with no problems. For me it's been a steady reliable printer. The only thing I have noticed is the printing has gotten really slow sometimes. I don't know if this is something with my wireless network feeding it the information to slowly or not.Update Sept 09: I like this printer a great deal more then I originally did. Once you learn how to connect wirelessly, its pretty easy to do. Sometimes my network needs to be reset and it only takes a minute or two to reconnect to it on the printer, which is nice. It's still functioning like the day I bought it, and now that I've found generic ink on amazon, I like it even more. I do have trouble receiving faxes every now and then, but I honestly without a doubt believe that's a fault in vonage service, not my brother printer. And since I send faxes more then getting them, it's not a big deal for me.UPDATE 10/26/08: I figured out the wireless problem with my HP laptop, not by actually attempting to fix it, bu just a random side effect of something else. I was removing norton anti-virus that was pre-installed on my laptop when I bought it, because it wanted me to pay to update, so I had decided to use some other free software. As soon as it was removed, my laptop was happily recognizing my brother printer icon(which tell you how much ink you have, etc). I had toyed with the firewall settings before, but removing this software made me all wireless, all the time. MUCH happier with my printer choice now.Original Review: To start, know this: I deducted a star for the problems I had with wireless and fax. I'm pretty tech savvy and hooking up to wireless isn't beyond me. I set up my home wireless network and usually my boyfriend just hopes and prays I can make it work, cause if I don't do it, no one will. I guess what I'm saying is: I know my way around computers, I'm a girl who loves her gadgets. So for a person who isn't as good with technology, they'd probably toss this out the window.I updated from an HP all-in-one because that one had stopped printing in color after only a couple years. I didn't use the color often but didnt expect it to stop working just from not using it. So, I saw this in the Staples ad for $120, it links with the wireless network and I got a free label maker(which I had been wanting, oddly enough). So I was sold. Out of the box, easy enough to start up, but the wireless network is where it gets tricky. I had wanted this printer because I have both a desktop and laptop, and get frustrated having to change computer or wire up to print. I'll say this, I HAVEN'T got it to print from my wireless laptop yet, works wirelessly with my desktop fine, don't know if it's my finiky laptop or the printer. Tried a lot of things, followed the manual, became frustrated and gave up. It's been on my to-do-list to call the brother people for about a month and 1/2. The other thing that was difficult was getting the fax to work. I use Vonage(Voip) and when I called tech support the brother guy almost had me thinking that because I used vonage, I wouldnt be using the fax. I just nearly freaked out. But we did get it working, with button hitting on my end, and calling the vonage people to have them do a couple thing for me too. So in the end, it took a couple of phone calls that make it work.I print a good deal in black and white, and occassionally in color. The color could be more vibrant, it seems more dull then on the screen. The black and white is just fine. I've scanned photos, made copies, sent faxes and received faxes. Everything is mostly as expected. I think, if I had a little set up help, I'd buy this again.

I've had a lot of printers over the years, and they usually fail after a year or two. I usually just get whatever printer works and is able to fax, scan and print, but this time around I really wanted something that worked.Cons: The first printer I got was constantly having printer jams, and I wondered if all Brother printers were like this. However, I returned the first one, got a second one and it's been pretty easy to use.Pros: Even with temporary tech issues like printer lining problems, the printer seems to know when something is wrong. It does a self-cleaning or an alignment, and I'm back in business. I've had this printer since 2007. Although there is an occasional printer jam, a quick pull on the back cover and a lift of the top and voila! Back in business. The printer cartridges seem to last longer than my other cartridges, and the price for individual cartridges are reasonable. I love that you can buy these color cartridges individually, especially considering I tend to use certain colors more than others. I can't see myself going back to a two-cartridge printer again. It's discontinued now, but I'm going to hold onto this printer for as long as possible.

In the past getting my hands on project plans has taken up a fair amount of time and money for me. This unit allows me to print usable 11 x 17 drawings from files via email or download. It has certainly paid for itself w/in the first few months of ownership. Ink cartridges last and are inexpensive to replace. Wireless communication was relatively easy to set up. I return the similar smaller unit because you had to manually feed 11 x 17 sheets.Negatives:Print speed is relatively slow, bearable for a home office but not for volume or multiple users. I recommend this unit mostly for its home office 11 x 17 ability. No convenient way to feed envelopes for printing (at least that I've found). I've kept my Lexmark all-in-one connected for that function alone.

When this machine works....it's great. Sadly it is the MOST frustrating copier I have EVER used :( The paper jams - and clearing our the paper jam memory code - is enough in it's own right to drive one bonkers. As far as using 'wirelessly'....what a joke. Have tried with 3 computers and different versions of windows and it doesn't make a difference. Others have tried to set it up as well so its not just user error. Printer states all readings are a 'go' and should work but is always 'offline'.But like I said when it does work it works great. Copies are clean and easy to read. Scanning is pretty easy as well as using the fax.

The scanner works. You can use it to fax. If you are looking for a printer, DO NOT PURCHASE! The 'starter' ink cartridges it comes with last for about a minute and then the replacements are like $20 each. You can find advice to set your printer to greyscale in order to trick the machine into still working when it is out of yellow, red, etc., but this does not work. There is a constant message that pops up when one cartridge is out of ink and it forces you to replace it before printing. Then, the cartridges will either run out fast again or dry out from non-use and you'll be buying more. Basically, Brother is a rip-off. They lure you in with low start-up costs, but then the printer ends up costing you more money than its worth.*In addition, try calling the customer service ~ you'll be speaking to someone in the ***Philippines***! I make it a personal policy to not buy products from companies that outsource jobs. In addition to hurting America's economy, they are a company that cuts corners. Hence, products that are junk.

Since I have 2 other printers; -a Brother Laser MFC 7820, and HP Photosmart Premium All In One Inkjet; both are network connected and am extremely satisfied with both. I decided to buy this Brother MFC 295 CN, also network ready; as an auxilliary printer and too, the cost of 4 generic ink cartridges are cheap.I have not used all the features of this machine. Therefore, I will restrict my gripe mainly to printing documents since I run a home office business and do a lot of document printing. The biggest problem I encounter is printing stacks of documents because of the permanent DEFAULT print setting of 1.2; -first page first, last page last. This is not convenient when printimg multiple pages. First of all, the printings comes out face up. But when printing say ...10 pages, the top page will be page ten(10) and the bottom page will be page one(1). Needless to say, I would manually have to re-sort the printed stack.I've turned on reverse printing so that it comes out 2.1; -last page in the bottom and irst page on top. This worked O.K, until you go to print multiple pages AGAIN. Because the printing setting will automatically reverts to DEFAULT which means: first page on the bottom and last pages on top.Second gripe is 2 sided printing. Print odd page number first. Then re-insert in the machine to print even numbher pages. I'll be darn! ....The back side of page one (1) is page ten (10).Other attributes of: QUITE, FAST, EXCELLENT PRINT QUALITY AND MOST OF ALL, CHEAPER INK CARTRIDGES IS GREAT. If only they can fix this problem. First time I called Brother's Cust. Support; ...no dice,...no help. Next time I call, hopefully, I'll reach someone else who has better product knowledge. This is with the hope that I did not hit a brick wall with the print settings, -meaning to say: ...it is what it is. Which means; ....it goes back!!!

I bought this machine about 1 1/2 years ago. I had originally purchased a Lexmark all in one at Sams club. The POS broke after two weeks. I took it back and bought a Brother instead. I have been very happy with this machine. Works great for on demand faxing. We do not receive faxes at home, but have to fax out ocassionally. for lite copying and printing, it works great. I have NEVER had a jam in the machine. I just purchased a new machine (Brother MFC-9320CW) to replace all 3 HP laser jet printers and the MFC-290C we have in our house currently. Based on my past experience with the Brother, I purchased another. I would put it's quality up against HP any day. Not to mention, I have not had any trouble with getting the proper drivers for windows on brother products like I have with HP. I recommend Brother to everyone. Go Brother!!

The ink is cheap but there is always something amiss with my unit. It often claims the ink heads need to be cleaned, which uses a lot of ink. Today the black ink just went out, without warning of ink low or a blockage. Loading paper in the tray can be tricky. If not loaded just right along the slop near the head of the tray, the printer will not pick up the paper.Worst of all: the unit claims to be a printer, fax, copier and scanner. The scanner will only work on the PC the printer is plugged into. There is no reason this functionality can not be shared as the printer device is. This means I can't hide this huge device in my closet. It must remain in my office.

I'm sadden to hear that this printer has caused so many problems. I bought mine over ten years ago and it wasn't until this year that it finally started to give up the ghost. Over ten years of relative trouble free operation.Around March of this year I printed a cover sheet for a project I was working on that contained this huge black area. The MFC 210c printed it just fine but it used up over half of the black ink. That was the straw that broke the camels back. After that it was never the same. No more black. I guess I could clean the heads since I believe that it's probably just clogged. I could clean the heads but the thing is ten years old. Why bother. I got me a new HP D1660 basic printer which I use as my main printer. But I'm still using the old Brother MFC 210c to FAX and to scan. They still work. I was considering buying a new all-in-one but when I read of all the problems people are having with their printers, I decided to leave well enough alone. So with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, my ten year old Brother printer soldiers on.Addendum: Autumn 2011. Found an unused pack of ink for the 210 that I had forgotten about, but it in, cleaned the heads and the thing began printing again. Back from the grave I guess. An extra 3/4 star for never say die.

So far, so good. Had it for 2 months now, and no significant problems. I do admit the reason we bought it is the ability to print 11X17, which it does just fine, once you learn to select tray 2. Automatic tray selection does not work. I saw other comments that the tray printing is a problem and that the scanner and the photo printer are not good. I don't use it for photo printing (I have an Epson for that) and the tray issue is simple if you pay attention to what you are doing and send the machine the right commands the first time. Otherwise, you are into a problem of having to clear everything out and turn the machine off to clear it as well, but these are problems you cause yourself by not remembering to click the right buttons. I don't expect it to make copies as fast as the $5,000 machine in the office, but it does everything I need, which is primarily to print 11X17 engineering drawings and to scan them. My machine seems to make acceptably good scans of 11X17 drawings as well. They are hard to tell from the originals.
