This MFC machine has decent features for a machine in its price range. But more than any other printer I've owned, this one is designed to blackmail you into purchasing ink -- even when it's not needed.I have never, I say again, NEVER, printed a single color document from this printer. I have no need to. I purchased it primarily as a scanner and outgoing fax machine. I only use the printing function for those rare occasions when I receive incoming faxes (maybe two or three times a year). And yet, on every single occasion when I needed to print an incoming fax, I had to replace at least one of the color ink cartridges. Why? because if any one of the color cartridges is "empty," the machine will not print -- not even in black and white! Although there is a "grayscale" print option, it will not print in grayscale if any of the color ink cartridges are empty.Because it incessantly "cleans itself," those cartridges are likely to be empty even if nothing useful has ever been printed. The only way to disable the auto-cleaning is to turn the machine off, which is unacceptable for a fax machine.Perhaps even more annoying, when the Brother software detects that a print cartridge is low, it periodically flashes a pop-up in front of your face, even if you're not trying to use the printer, with the frequency of the pop-ups increasing the longer you ignore them. Yes, it can be turned off, but that also disables the scanning functionality. This is the printer that convinced me to never, ever, ever purchase another Brother product. Neither do I purchase the ink from Brother: I buy it off-market, and would do so even if it were *more* expensive than genuine Brother ink. If the day comes when I can no longer get off-brand ink for this machine, I will use it as a boat anchor. I really do hate Brother that much for the way they try to strongarm you to buy ink for this printer. In summary, the Brother MFC-490CW should have been named the Luca Brasi model. It holds a gun to your head and forces you to sign on the line -- in this case, the line of a credit card receipt -- every time you have to quench its insatiable thirst for ink. Buy this printer, and you're no longer a Brother customer. You're a member of the family: And every time you think you're out, they'll puuulllll you back in.

If all you are doing is printing documents from an application like Word or spreadsheet, then I guess this printer is okay. However if you plan to interface with other applications like on-line postage printing then do not buy this printer. Even in typical applications this printer jams frequently. I print CD labels and jacket covers and they constantly jam. Even when feeding one at a time. When trying to print envelopes from Stamps.com the printer constantly fails to recognize the paper size even though I go into the printer menu and set the paper size to the envelope. I get the "wrong paper size" message. I called customer support and they said "it must be a problem with Stamps.com". Even though every other printer I have owned worked, this one doesn't, it is a Stamps.com problem. Hmmmm. In all fairness this printer is a workhorse for simple printing. The ink time is totally underwhelming. I am constantly buying ink. And it does not come with one black cartridge and one color cartridge. You actually have four cartridges to buy. And it constantly needs at least one cartridge. I do print a lot, but other brands that I have owned lasted longer. Also the printer is horrid for printing full sized pictures. The print quality is terrible. Again, this printer is okay for printer text and spreadsheet files. The operation could not be more user hostile. My last printer, in order to print an envelope all I had to do was put an envelope in the special envelope slot. The printer did the rest. This one, you have to adjust the guides in the paper tray, then go into the menu and set the paper size. This is still not a guaranty, as it may or may not work on any given day with any given software. In conclusion, while this printer does perform in some instances, there are much better multifunction printers on the market. You would do well to pass this one up and check one of the others.

I use this printer at work (Office Manager in Oil Field Industry) daily to scan to my computer / Fax and even print even though I have a huge Kyocera. It is on my desk and it does many things the scanning to me is the most important and there are many things I don't even use on this printer.....looking to buy one exactly like it for home use and work/home use since I may be traveling with work soon. This printer was here when I started the position and at first did not like it. Takes a few months of getting use to but then your just zooming along.

I've had two Epson printers over the past 10 years, and never had problems. Brought this printer in a hurry to scan and email some documents. Hoped that a single unit could handle our needs. However this printer is a complete disappointment. Constantly getting paper jams and "consult troubleshooting guide" messages. Also the ink is very expensive and goes very quickly compared with the Epson.

I've been using this printer for about a month. It was easy to set up and begin using. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't do very well with envelopes. I read other reviews so I knew this could be a problem (but was hoping it wouldn't be!) It doesn't destroy the envelope, it just creates a crease on one side. Other than this issue, it works great. I love the duplex printing and scanning, it is very fast, and is very quiet when not in use. If only it didn't mess up the envelopes, it would be perfect!

After less than 300 pages of printing, this printer suddenly has decided even with full ink levels, that it won't print color, and the network configuration page gives me an error 404. I tried downloading the firmware update tool from brother, but because its not a newer firmware than what is on the printer it refuses to update it.There is a way to manually update the firmware by FTPing the main firmware BLF file to the printer but Brother's new policy is to NOT e-mail those out period, and instead referred me to a local printer repair place that wanted to charge me more than the printer was worth to update the firmware, and would not give me the firmware file directly.$130 bucks for 300 printouts... Buyer beware!

We bought this machine for our store because it was the only one that fit into our cabinet. What a mistake.Firstly, when one of the ink cartridges is empty, the whole thing stops working. So if you are out of Cyan or Magenta ink, you won't be able to print anything, not even in black ink, even if the black ink cartridge is perfectly full! It's also very glitchy. When there's a paper jam (not uncommon, mind you) you have to open the back of the machine and pull the stray paper out. However, when you try to resume printing, the paper jam error message won't go away, no matter what you press, so you then have to unplug the machine and then plug it back in for it to work again. Of course, it loses all memory of whatever you were printing, so you have to figure out where you left off or just start over. It does this almost any time you have to cancel a process. It's also not the most user friendly. When someone is sending you a fax, it requires three different buttons to be pressed in order to receive it.All in all, we are regretting this purchase terribly. We're thinking we should have just figured out a way to fit an HP or Canon all-in-one in our little space.

I've had multiple HP all-in-ones previously and was going to get another one until I read the great reviews about this one. I like it, it's a nice machine, lightweight, nice size, does a decent job of printing and is very easy to assemble and set up initially. The auto feeder works well without jamming. It's easy to figure out how to do basic things like printing, copying, etc., without needing a manual. My problems have been when I've tried to duplex print or scan multiple pages into a pdf rather than a jpg. If I throw the docs in and either through the machine or my computer select 'scan' it automatically scans them into individual pages in jpg format without an easy option or selection for type of file I want. I couldn't quickly and easily figure out how to duplex print either. The manual refers most things to the cd-rom which lacks instructions for both of these issues. Each time, I then went to the website where I couldn't find the answers either, even the downloadable manual doesn't address everything and was missing the whole scanning issue entirely, and ended up emailing customer support. While they are pretty quick to respond, the instructions are long, as in 12-15 steps, and sometimes a bit unclear, often leaving out key things ie: after duplex printing, you actually have to go back in to the software and deselect that feature. Otherwise the printer later jams or thinks it has jammed because it's still trying to print in duplex mode. I haven't been able to get a receipt of confirmation after I've faxed, only if the doc didn't go through. The manual covers the journal, but not the receipts.I never had these issues with any of my HPs. They are just touch and go. When scanning, I'd throw the doc or picture on, hit go and the software would automatically pop up and ask how I wanted it saved, where, and if I had any special requests. Easy-Schmeasy. I never needed the manual for anything, let alone having to refer to a cd-rom, a website and emailing tech support. Faxing and everything else was the same way. My only complaint was that the flatbed read a smaller area than the average size copier, so when I would make reduced copies even, it didn't read outside of the standard 8.5x11 size even though it was larger.I'm pretty computer savvy and if I'm having challenges with this, then it would be especially so for someone who isn't.

I bought the 255cw when my HP broke. I liked the idea of the wireless connection. It setup with no issues to my wireless network using a Trendnet router/switch. It has worked with no issues at all. I have used it for fax, copying photos, sending photos to a pc. I've not had an issue with it at all. I buy discount ink and haven't had any issues there yet, either. I have just recently updated the firmware. I'm not sure what it was supposed to fix but the update went well and its back online.

The Brother MFC-465CN has a nice appearance, lots of "bells and whistles", and is priced reasonably in the store(which is why I originally bought it). What the consumer does not know is that it will cost at minimum $160 per year in colored ink cartridges (without doing any color copying----so multiply that out if you plan to do any of that), to keep the machine working because of a flaw in it's design. The machine goes through self cleaning cycles which use up the color ink cartridges. I've called and complained 7 times to Brother and they will do nothing about it. Over a two year period I've spent 4 times what the machine originally cost me, on Brother colored ink cartridges, because the machine will not work until the color ink cartridges are replaced. I make approximately one color copy per month, if that. What a SCAM!!!!!!! I'm furious.

This is our second Brother 4-in-1. It is for home use. The first one we had lasted 3 years and then needed a new printhead. We were told we had caused the problem by using generic ink cartridges. I don't know if that is true or not, but on this one we are using Brother ink cartridges only. We have had no trouble sending or receiving faxes. Our sent faxes have graph drawings and we had to 'fine-tune' the settings so the delivered copy was received the way it was sent and not blurry. We haven't had any problems with the copying features. We have voice mail through our cable communications company so we have not used the message center on this machine, but we did use it on the other one we had and no problems with that either. One problem we do have, and also had on the other one, is that when the phone is answered on the machine, no other phone can be picked up in the house so that a person can join in on the conversation. I doubt it is a machine error, but Brother customer service could not help us with it.Another issue I have with it is if you want to fax multiple sheets of paper you have to stand at the machine because loading the paper and then 'catching' the completed sheets can get complicated. The completed sheet is coming out on top of where the new sheet is going in, if that makes sense, and if you are individually feeding the sheets, you have to be quick. We do not have wireless so I can't comment on that.Despite the phone and fax issues, we really like the machine. We have had this one 2 years and will continue using Brother products.

This copier/printer/scanner works very well. It can handle everything up to 11x17 to copy, scan, print, etc. And every brother printer I've ever used produces very high quality prints. Yes, they are a bit slow, but I'm alright with that. I'm more than happy to wait a few extra seconds to get very high quality prints. You can also find extremely cheap ink here on amazon. Like, 7 dollars for a pack of 12 replacement cartridges (3 black, and 3 of each color). So, it's very well worth it. I give it 5 stars happily.

Decided to upgrade my printer and purchased this Brother all in one after reading the reviews. Most seemed positive for the most part, but of course some were negative. I decided to take my chances on this printer at a price I could afford. I didn't use it right away since my old printer (which was only a printer) was still working and I was so used to it. The brother being a all in one, was new to me and more advanced. When my old printer started to fail, I said IT'S TIME TO HOOK UP THE BIG BOY!! First thing I noticed was no USB or cable that came with the unit, so I had to purchase one. Next, I spent at least two days trying to get the thing to print as the test pages only printed in blue and magenta with a slight yellow. ABSOLUTELY NO BLACK PRINT AT ALL!! Even though the cartridge was full. I later gave up and called Brother for assistance. They advised me to take the printer to the nearest service center for the ink tank to be replaced stating the tank may be clogged. I could not understand for the life of me why they would suggest this, since I'd never used the printer and had only printed test pages. Later the worker for the service center affiliated with Brother contacted me to schedule an appointment. I asked him why would the ink tank need replacement if I never used the printer? That's when he informed me "BROTHER HAD A RECALL ON THIS MODEL PRINTER DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH THE INK TANK". WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL ME?? Needless to say, I am not satisfied with this purchase and as of this date have no way to get the printer to the service center without a vehicle. Brother advised they can not send the tank to me in attempt to install it myself. They further advised I could ship the printer to the service center. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW HOW MUCH THIS WOULD COST?? Brother did not say they would pay for the shipping. AT THIS TIME, I'M STUCK WITH A ALL IN ONE PRINTER I'VE NEVER USED. THUMBS DOWN!!!

I researched all the brands and models in the under $500 range, read lots of reviews here and elsewhere, and determined that the Brother DCP-8085DN ranked as good or better than all its competitors. It has the feature set I wanted for my new business, including the ability to scan to PDF, several image file formats, and OCR. It is also a very quick printer for single-side and reasonably quick for duplex printing. So far, I've run 2-1/2 reams through this printer and scanned about 100 pages and I am fully satisfied.

I have had this multi-function printer since migrating to Windows 7. I was mad at the time at HP, and now I seriously regret the decision to try a lesser brand. It required HOURS to get the wireless connection to work the first time, and any little hiccup in my wifi network required still more hours of troubleshooting to get it working again. I just replaced the yellow ink for the second time, and suddenly the black doesn't want to print. Online help has no solution for this even though it appears to be a common problem, and Brother customer service is not open on weekends probably because no one is buying their products anymore. So it is going to be recycled pronto, along with the wasted ink I just bought. Early Christmas gift to myself tomorrow is a new printer.

I've owned 2 Brother printers, and 3 HP printers in the last 5 years. The latest HP that we bought (6500 model) gave up the ghost after only 2 months so it prompted me to go back to Brother to buy another one knowing full well that I can refill the ink cartridges on my own and save a lot of money over the course of the life of the printer. We print on average 2,000 pages a month, so this printer fits in with our print style, since it is rated at about 2200 to 2500 pages per month. It's reasonably quiet, it doesn't need to re-align the print heads after every print job like the last HP used to, so it's reasonably quiet both when printing and between print jobs. The text when put side by side to our monstrously large HP color laser is easily rivaled in black. The color images that we have printed with this printer are nothing to sneeze at but they are certainly not the quality that one gets by taking your photos in somewhere to print them. But more than acceptable to send to family, friends and business associates in my opinion. The printer comes with Scanport 11SE which now works on Vista (my old Brother printer had Scanport 9 which wouldn't work with vista), which to me is a big benefit to keep my scanned documents organized and right at my fingertips (so to speak). It's got all the right camera memory stick ports including CF (The HP 6500 decided not to host the CF card slot for some reason and it's the one all our Nikon cameras use). This printer is very large however, that is probably the only thing I can say bad about it. But I guess it's got to be large to be able to print out 11x17 pages. It's definitely not for the dorm room if any of you college folks are thinking about getting it unless you've got a nice sized desk area as it is LARGE!The first one we bought would not print black right out of the box, no amount of print head cleaning could coax it to print with the black ink so we returned it for another one (same make and model) and it worked right out of the box perfectly. It's nice to have it hooked up to our LAN network so that any of our computers can use it to print if they so wish. Wireless would be nice but at the price of $129.98 (staples price) I don't honestly expect them to put in a wireless network but wired is fine and it's faster for large documents. The only oddity about this printer is the quick dial, and what I mean is that there is no removable faceplate that you might print the names next to the numbers so that you remember who is on what quick dial, instead it is silkscreened onto the plastic of the printer, so one wouldn't exactly want to add a quick dial and write the person name on their printer, because what if you want to change it, how would you remove the ink writing from the plastic printer body? It seems strange that it's not an insert of some kind that you can write on. Maybe Brother expects me to put a piece of tape over it and write on that. I dunno, it's strange. One other thing. It would have been nice if the paper tray could have held more than 150 pages. For people like us that print a lot of pages (and why else would you buy a printer that is rated at 2500 pages a month unless you were going to use it), the 150 page paper tray is a bit skant, I would rather it had held 250 like the HP 6500 does.Apparently Brother still can't make a printer that can keep printing in black when the color cartridges are empty for some reason, that is their biggest problem for me.

This is my second All-In-One printer that supports wireless printing. Ever since have I used a wireless printer, I became a big fan of it, and I will not buy any printer that is not wireless. It is so convenient to put a printer anywhere and is great to print, scan and fax wirelessly. My first wireless AIO, the Epson Artisan 800 has been working great and I expected more from the Brother MFC-6890CDW which is more expensive than the Epson Artisan 800. In short, the Artisan 800 and the MFC-6890CDW target different markets, and I will tell you why.First of all, the MFC-6890CDW is a huge printer. Compared with the MFC-6890CDW, Epson AIO looks so cute. Most of my friends who have visited my house thought it was a traditional photo copier. It is that big. The unique feature of the MFC-6890CDW is that it supports a duplex (double-sided) printing. I have never seen an Inkjet printer that does this and it really impressed me. I was expecting a soggy paper from a duplex printing output, however, the output was great. When I compared the printing from the same source on a single-sided and a double sided output, the former was definitely darker. I did it on the same setting, so my guess is that the printer might reduce the amount of ink when it does the duplex printing. This makes perfect sense to me.When it comes to photo printing, the MFC-6890CDW does the job well. However, the quality of the photo printing is slightly worse than the Artisan 800. And the MFC-6890CDW supports borderless printing on photo paper. The MFC-6890CDW still makes quality photos and is good enough for a business presentation. The MFC-6890CDW has a 4.2 inch nice color LCD touch screen, however, the pictures shown on the LCD from the USB memory connected to it are not great. The color is washed out and you cannot judge the quality of the original pictures. It has 'Enhance Photo' feature built-in, however, you might not do the job well using this LCD screen. It is better to have the LCD screen than not, however, the quality of the screen should have been better for a printer with a heavy price tag.The text printing is very clear and fast if you do not choose the duplex printing. It can prints and scans up to 11' by 17' papers. There are not many AIO printers to handle this size of the paper and for some people, this printer would be a definite choice. And it supports Windows and Mac flawlessly. As far as the wireless feature is concerned, this is a great printer. While I set it up, I did not have to connect the USB cable even once. The wireless setup was very smooth and simple, and I can print, scan and fax wirelessly. The wireless scanning works without any problem and sending a fax wirelessly is cool. It does the job as it is supposed to, and I love it.Concerning features, it does not have anything fun like the Epson Artisan 800. It does not support printing on a CD/DVD. You cannot make calendars, post cards or coloring books on the printer alone like the Artisan 800. However, it scans the document and saves it to to a memory card with a single touch of the LCD screen.Overall, this is a very sturdy AIO printer. The duplex printing is fantastic and the wireless capability is awesome. The quality and the speed of the printing are very satisfactory, and I did not have trouble or paper jams so far. But, if you are looking for a feature-rich, fun AIO color printer for your home, the MFC-6890CDW might not be for you. Also, I really liked the printed manual; it is hard to see this kind of a printed manual these days. The MFC-6890CDW does its job best when it is sitting at an office.

The paper feeder on the top pulls multiple pages at once every time. It will then either jam or pull the batch of pages all the way through and copy only the first page. Brother sent me a replacement machine, which did exactly the same thing, so this is apparently a design defect. The only recourse with Brother is for them to keep sending out the same model. Meanwhile, I spent at least five hours on the phone with Brother with phone calls over two separate days. Their hold times are extremely long. The first person who answers (after a 20-30 minute wait) always has to transfer me to a different person which is another 20-30 minute hold time. I finally called Amazon to try and obtain a refund. Since I called more than 30 days after the purchase, I'm not eligible for a refund. However, once they receive the machine back, he said they will refund 50% to 80% of my purchase price depending on the condition of the machine. Not ideal, but it's better than nothing. I would definitely not recommend Brother machines because of these issues and the poor customer service.

Some other brands might have paperless outgoing FAX sending, so does this printer. (Print to the FAX "printer" in Windows printer list and not to your default printer). Really still the same machine but two different printers in Windows. It will even ask for the phone number to use. Also, if you are on one the junk FAX lists and many of us seem to end up on - the free trips to Vegas, Hawaii etc (after a 4 - 8 hour real estate arm twist!) you can end up with a lot of wasted ink/paper. So how about paperless incoming FAX's? Yes, Brother printers (MFC-5890CN included) have what is called PC-FAX Receive that is an option. Paper manual is nearly useless for setting it up - see the included CD's more detailed manual for full setup details. More or less you install the PC-FAX receive software in the PC's startup folder (I'm using XP) so that it is always running and also turn off incoming FAX print to paper option via the setup screens. After that your incoming FAX's are only digital files that you can read on your PC's screen. Print or delete or leave them in memory. (up to the memory limits) Great feature if you receive lots of FAX's that don't need to be saved. One more way to save money with this printer and not wasting ink and paper.

We've owned this printer 4-5 yrs now. Ink cartridges frequently need to be replaced, whether you have been using the printer or not (and the Brother ones are EXPENSIVE). You can clearly see ink still in the cartridge when you remove it from the printer as there is a clear window on the cartridge (but putting it back doesn't help, the printer still says it is empty and usually will then register that there is no cartridge at all).Love the fax and scan/photocopy features. Photo printing never worked well as no matter how much we fiddle, the printer has never drawn the paper in straight, so a tiny corner of each picture will be white. Also, we did not receive an install disk and have frequently had the printer just disconnect itself from our wireless network. Reconnecting it is extremely difficult and the download for installation from Brother's website doesn't work. I gave setup a 2 because at least is has wireless, even if it is a pain to get working.I will be replacing this printer ASAP with a non-Brother model (as from reviews I see the ink issues are common with this brand).
