This printer is quiet, light weight,nice to look at and doesn't take up much space. The price was fantastic and the cost of the ink was what really sold me on this all in one printer. I could only give it three stars because the print quality, even when I adjusted the quality levels, are dull and washed out. I bought this all in one to use in my small bussiness to print business cards, brochures, and signs. If I can't figure out how to improve the print quality I may have to buy another printer just to handle my marketing needs. I now understand why the ink is so inexpensive.....you never use it.

The skinny on this printer: If you need a good printer/fax/scanner buy this printer. If you expect to print photos and higher in color jobs, don't waste your money.BUY IF: You are in need of an inexpensive multi-function this is definitely the choice. The built in fax works great once configured and making copies with the on board functions is a snap. Scanner is good quality that provides a lot of flexibility. The color prints from this machine are about as good as you can expect from a <$70 printer, which in my personal opinion is sub standard for my needs. If you are only worried about black and white and business use, pick this printer up today!DON BUY: If you're a designer or photographer (or color print enthusiast) that requires test prints and draft work do not waste the money. I picked up this printer when I was in a pinch and it got by, but the color clarity/saturation is very poor. Photo prints were very unsaturated as well. I highly recommend a printer designed for these needs, such as the Epson photo series in comparison to this item.

I LOVE this machine!I recently moved to a Mac and my existing Canon Multifunction Machine did not offer drivers for Mac.So, I began my search for a replacement.I was immediately impressed with the large number of positive reviews as well as the price point.Sure, Apple will send you a free Canon machine when you purchase a new Mac, but they are junk! Tried one and couldn't even get it working.This Brother is a breath of fresh air!Extremely easy to set up - I have it set up wirelessly which is out of this world!!I can print from anywhere in my house!I have successfully used printing, scanning, copying and faxing.I did not purchase it with the intention of printing out photos.So far, I have it a month and I am extremely please with the purchase.I purchased one for my mother as well!!!Excellent product!

The printer itself is decent but the software included is very bloated and poor quality. The CD installs 150 MB worth of crapware programs on your PC. Then it barley even works. I cant print on my vista laptop but it can scan. It cant scan on xp but it can print. I would expect the CD to only install a driver but it also installs several program that run in the background.

I could not be happier with the Brother 490CW. This is the first Color All-in-One I have owned and it works great for me. It was a very easy set-up and has given me excellent results. The only thing I don't like would be the paper tray. You have to take it all the way out to add paper and it only holds about 100 sheets. It would be nice if there was an additional tray option available. But at $89 this is basically a throw away machine. I actually have thought about buying a couple more just to have on hand.

Just bought this product. It looks pretty good. My daughter set it up, she's 18 and is Not a computer geek, so it must be pretty easy to set up. We did just use the USB cord.My only concern is that I don't see an easy sheet feeder. I run one copy and then print on the back of that page for certain household lists, and the last printer would let me insert the printed page on top of the stack of papers, printing on the back. This one, apparently, you need to pull out the paper tray. I'll update. DB in SA 5-09

I liked many things about this unit, but unfortunately, I can only give it two stars (I would give it 2.5 if possible).Pros:- Small footprint- Electrical cord built into printer; no annoying separate transformer- Easy setup- Good featuresCons:- Washed out print- Inaccurate color- Paper loading tray is a bit awkward- The manual says you must use up an ink cartridge within 6 months of installationThe printer has nice features and is easy to set up. If you want an inexpensive wireless multifunction, it is a great device. But if you are wanting a high quality print, it's probably not the printer for you. The print looks washed-out and the color is inaccurate. I did notice that if you set the quality to "Fine", the text is more pleasing; however, I suspect that much more ink is used. In short, its features are comparable to or better than the competitors, but the print quality relatively poor.

I picked this printer because I wanted a good wireless printer without completely blowing my budget. I thought it was actually pretty easy to set up and had it up and running in about 30 mins(this includes the time it took for me to heave the box up the stairs). It's screen is pretty cool with nifty graphics and it has worked well no matter where I'm working at home.I have only used it for printing so far but am really happy with the quality and print speed.

This printer was very simple to set up and install. The step by step instructions are a no brainer. Print quality is very good. Print speed is adequate for my use. It is slightly noisier than the HP all in one machine I had prior to this one...but the Brother appears to be sturdier. If you are a power user that prints constantly all day I think you may be slightly disappointed in the only adequate speed of this machine. However, if you print less than about 50 pages per day... this machine might be a great fit.The one HUGE advantage is the ink cartridges. Not only are they available from resellers at a fraction of what the HP cartridges cost... Having 3 separate color ink cartridges means no more replacing the expensive 3 color cartridge when one of the colors runs out. If you check amazon's price on the replacement cartridges they have available, I think you will be amazed at how inexpensive they are. I can buy about 6 black cartridges (the one I use most) for about the same price as one of my old HP cartridges. That was the clincher for me. Good luck to all.

The people who rave on this item do so because they have not replaced ink yet or got it for around $100.00. I paid a little more than a $100.00 and let me tell you that I am disappointed in the fact that I had to buy a complete ink set about six months ago and have had maybe 10 black and white faxes faxed to me. I was expecting an important fax today and suprise! I cant recieve it because cyan is out! These cartridges cost an arm and a leg too, almost sixty bucks (full set). I am going to break my own creed and now go to cartridge world. If I refill with brother ink one more time (full set), it will be more than I paid for the machine.The machine is sturdy and works great........just a money pit when it comes to ink. Damn glad I don't have to use color.

The Brother MFC5890cn is the best printer I have used. I operate 4 computers in a network with both Linux Mint 6 and Windows XP with dual boot for business and CAD use. Linux for online and Windows for CAD offline. Setting up this network printer was a breeze. The CD included with the printer set it up for Windows. I contacted Brother for drivers for Linux and within an hour received a response from the Japanese service center for Brother via email with instructions and references to the Brother web site for Linux drivers. The only things I miss are some sort of indicator light to tell me that the printer is on and a spare paper tray so I can have quick change of paper size. So far I have not been able to find a good source for paper trays. I like the 4 cartridge ink system, but would prefer that this printer used the same cartridge as another of my printers, a Brother DCP130C.

Works great. Very functional. BUT - get ready to go through all four cartridges every couple of weeks (with even a moderate use.) And the kicker is - even if you print just B&W, you have to have ALL FOUR cartridges in........what a racket!

I ordered the Brother MFC-490CW on Thursday and received it on Friday, which was great because our old Lexmark died and my daughter had a big paper due for school. But this printer is amazing, it was out of the box and set up wirelessly on 2 notebooks and a desktop,within 1 1/2 hours. Its quiet and super fast at printing. The quality of the print is great. The fax and scanner work great, which is a plus. We haven't tried printing pictures yet. I'll give it a month of school papers and review it again.

ProsCompact, everything seems to work great; I haven't had this unit but only one month but well worth the moneyConsHad a little trouble installing the soft wear for the wireless connection but I think it was more of a Microsoft problem instead of the printer's problem. Right now I am using this via USB to my server until I have some time to figure out why the wireless is a little flaky.

The printer itself works very well. I have two complaints: I print alot of items back to back and putting the paper back in is not particularly easy because the drawer must be pulled out and opened. It does not push back in very readily.I also had a paper jam and removed the paper from the back easily. However, the printer insisted I also check the scanner; I was unfamiliar with the bottom section of the scanner and had to ask my installer to come by. The paper jam was gone so it seemed unnecessary to have to check the scanner but the computer obviously required that both spots be checked.

To get a great all-in-one printer without killing your wallet is one thing, but throw in wireless capabilities for the ease of printing from your portable device, is the icing on the cake. From the moment I opened up the box, my printer was set up (including software for my laptop) in under 30 minutes. I was printing wirelessly in no time. Because I only use this printer wirelessly, I cannot rate the item on a wired setup. This seems to be a huge upgraid from my Lexmark all-in-one, but without a hugh price difference. I really like that there is no attached phone for the fax portion. Now my two year old can no longer tie up the phone line due to a pointless attachment. So far all the documents I have printed have come out looking great. I have not used it for photos yet. I highly recommend this product. An extremely affordable wireless all-in-one with a very simple and stress free setup process.

I guess I know why this was on sale. It doesn't print. I've gone through two black ink cartridges ($$), and now the other three colors are "low" from all the cleanings. I still have yet to print anything... if the black ink doesn't work, nothing will print. The help-desk was rather help-less; despite the fact that I itemized their documented troubleshooting tips ad nauseum, the advice was to do them again.... and again. Since I bought this before traveling overseas, their final piece of advice was the best. "I'm sorry, we don't have any service centers near you, why don't you bring it back to the States?". Like I said - does anyone need a doorstop? The scanner DOES work, but I can't seem to copy without any ink either... I guess 1 out of 4 isn't bad... they DID say this was an "all-in-ONE" machine, right?

this product took me all of 10 minutes to set up on my wireless network. It's a little big but I suppose that's the price you pay for 17" printing capability. I've owned Brother products for 12 years and never had an issue. Ditto w/this one. EXCEPT - it eats ink like nobodies business. I operate a modest small - business and I feel like I'm buying ink every month.Edit: I've now owned it for 1 year and find that paper is jamming constantly when loaded from the bottom tray. The top tray is fine but the bottom ALWAYS jams. Ergo - if I'm printing a lot which I do - than it becomes a real pain. I'll probably be buying a different brand next time.

I've tried countless all in ones printers, hated most of them, especially HP with their bloated software, very inconsistent between Mac & PC.This Brother printer was super easy to setup, has a great lean and sleek software, and is of incredible value for a wireless. I had almost given up on printers, but this one wowed me... Works great over my Wireless N+G WPA protected network, energy saving performance is flawless...Highly recommended

Don't buy this printer unless you want to spend all your money buying ink. When one of the four inks run out, it won't do anything. I hardly ever use colored, but it keeps running. I am giving mine away to the Goodwill and write the price off my taxes.

I've always had HP printers but this one from Brother's is the best bang for the buck. You could easily pay 2 or 3 times more and not get any more capability or quality. Good auto feeder, easy to use and navigate color lcd menu (which tilts to different angles). The footprint is very compact for all the capability. I use it for everything, printing, scanning and faxing. You also get the flexibility to change the color cartridges individually which will save you $$ in the long run. I have been using this printer for 2 months so far with no issues. I have not used it to print photos.

Never before have a come across a printer like this, at such a low price. Brother has done it again, with their phenomenal line of office products. After witnessing the failure of not one, but three HP printers we decided to go with another brand. This unit features a great touch screen, easy to use fax machine, scanner (which lets you choose one of many places that the scanned image can be sent to). The other great feature that sold us on this printer was the fact that it features a built-in wireless care for printer sharing. No more USB cords or other unnecessary cords are needed. The setup for the wireless was a bit tricky at first, even for someone with college education in computer hardware. But we called Brother and they guided us over the phone and it was done!Please consider this printer! You won't be sorry!

I received this printer for free and realized that its nothing more than a glorified door stop. Extremely slow and has a major problem with knowing how much ink is actually left in the cartridges. As pricey as ink is these days, when your printer tells you your cartridge is empty and you actually see that its still about half full, there's a problem.After the paper jams, ink snafus, and mystery freeze ups, the printer just stopped recognizing that a cartridge was installed period. No matter how many times I removed the cartridge and replaced it with a new one, it kept stating that I needed to install another because nothing was registering.Will make a youtube video soon with the error and subsequent destruction of the printer by brute force!

This fax/printer/scanner was a pleasant surprise. It is fast, quiet, and works with my Mac, except it does not allow me to receive the faxes on the Mac and avoid paper. That was a disappointment, but in all other ways it is excellent. Has ringer detection, slots for camera cards, and many other nice surprises.

Good looking All in One unit. Hard to set up. I still cannot figure out the wireless part and gave up, pass the cable please. Print quality is good. Print speed is painfully slow! Scan is decent. Easy to use touch screen is a nice addition. Ink cost is decent. Complicated interface but a good looking addition to any home office.

I bought the "little" 685CW Brother MFC printer a few months ago. When I decided to open a new office, I bought the "older" brother 885CW because it has a cordless phone, in addition to all the features. It's a wireless color and black printer. It can also scan, fax and copy, too. It's not a "race horse" when it comes to the speed of the printing or copying but the quality is good. The ink cartridges are small, compared to other printers I own, but I found a resource on line that sells the ink at a reduced price (re-filled cartridges), which makes the 885CW printer an even better bargain. I have this printer set-up with 3 wireless computers so several employees can print documents from their offices. Based on the features and the price, it's a good "little" work horse. I have a 1300 sq office area. The wireless printing feature is good. I'm having a bit of a problem with the saving the documents after I've scanned them, via the wireless connection. I suspect it's not the Brother's fault. I suspect we haven't completed installing all of the necessary features for the scanning. I'll admit that I don't always read the handbook but I need to go back to the basics to get the scanning features working. Scanning hasn't been a high priority for our office.

It was a REAL hassle to set up the wireless printing. I went through the instructions twice and finally had to contact Brother. Their reply was quick and very helpful and we finally got it working. This was only yesterday, but I have scanned, printed and copied so far and it work great. It is a quiet printer and quick and smooth.

If you're looking for a home-office printer you can't go wrong. It prints, it scans and it faxes! The best feature is that it's wireless so no additional cords which becomes an issue if you have too many peripherals attached to your computer.Since it's a compact all-in-one printer, one just needs to be gentle especially with the paper tray due to its intricate design.

This printer will tell you that its out of ink when the cartridge is still about 1/3 full. Then you have to go through the pain of taping over the window on each cartridge to get the printer to actually use the ink you paid for. In addition, the machine needlessly cleans itself ALL the time. You need to keep the printer unplugged or else all of your ink will vanish into thin air. I strongly urge you to look elsewhere.

After my HP printer developed a problem and their email "support" led me around in circles for 3 days, and at the same time learning that HP would not be making a Vista driver for my 4 1/2 year old scanner,I decided to shop for a non-HP all-in-one. I am in the process of going to an all wireless network at home, and this unit caught my eye. It reportedly had a good wireless interface, and in general, the reviews were positive so I jumped in. For the price I paid, it is an awesome machine. Shop around. Even BestBuy had it on sale for $139.Setup took a bit longer than I expected, but then it is an all in one and you only do this once. I only ran into two glitches. I had to run through the network setup twice. I incorrectly entered my router encryption code the first time because of the text messaging entry system from the dial pad. I just do not text message so it was awkward for me. The second problem I thought I had was that the unit would not power off. I was only partway through the setup process and had to leave, so I tried to shut it down and the power off/on button did nothing but emit a couple beeps.Rather than pack it up and ship it back, I returned and completed the setup. What I finally figured out is that the handset must be plugged in or it will not power off. God only knows why the setup is this way!The print quality is as good as that of my HP 6122 printer, and the unit is quiet. The print speed is not remarkable but probably compares with that of the HP. I have some dexterity problems, but the button/controls are very easy to use. The wireless interface and other features are great. The only reason I did not give it a fifth star is because I do not know how long it will last and do not have any experience using Brother's support yet.In sum, is was a good buy.

Easy setup. Prints fairly quickly. I really like the ability to print to it from any computer in the house wirelessly.I also like the fact that the printer will go to sleep after a period of time and wake up when printed to. We never remembered to power off the old printer. (which by the way we had shared out through another computer which was a pain for printing)Overall good printer for for the price.

The Machine works well.But if you have money to burn for ink, this is your machine. It will not fuction unless all of the ink cartriges are full. Example; say you are printing a black & white document only, if your yellow or blue is out, you will not be able print anything.This ink is not cheap at all. The three colors will run you about $40. The black ink will run you $25.Do you really want to pay $65 every three months on ink when you can buy a brand new HP 640 for $59? Until Brother can improve the ink system, LEAVE THIS ITEM ON THE SHELF!

I have purchased six of these over the years. All have performed well for printing, copying, and scanning. For most of our scanning, we use Windows XP and Adobe Acrobat. I have not used Brother tech support for this model, but tech support was very good for other Brother models.

I was looking to buy a printer and fax machine for some time. Our old fax m/c and the printer had reached the end of their lives. Recently Brother is having some great promotions with 2 year extended warranties. With the advertised low prices for these machines, I couldn't resist. After some research I decided to order the 5460 multi function all in one. Boy, am I delighted!What I like:============- Setup was very easy. Hooking up the machine took me about 10 minutes. Installing the software, another 8-10.- The print quality was great.- The printer is network ready. It works with both wired and wireless networks. This feature alone is worth the price. No need for any wires from your computer or any computer on the network to the printer. If you don't have a network at home, don't worry. You can hook using a USB cable. The manufacturers don't include a USB printer cable usually as with this product. So don't discard the cable if you are throwing away your old printer - they cost around 35 bucks.- You can receive the faxes onto your computer. You need to change the mode on the machine panel. The setup software opened up all the ports necessary. Now all the junk faxes goes to your PC and you don't have to waste paper! Even if your PC is off, the faxes are stored in the machine's memory so that you can later 'download' to your PC.- You can send faxes right out of your PC using the provided software. Another cool thing. As I work from home remotely, this helps me a lot. Otherwise, I would have had to print out the documents before faxing. The software comes with an address book which can sync with your Outlook address book.- The setup also enables your PC for internet faxing. i.e., even if you don't have your Brother fax machine connected, as long as you have an internet connection, you can fax documents using the internet. This is pretty cool though not a new feature. While I am at the airport, I can fax those last minute expense reports right from my laptop.- I haven't tried the scan feature yet, that will be the least used feature for me.- Given the print quality is good, I would believe the copier would be just great as well.- The paper feeder sits within the footprint of the machine. This is another neat and space saving feature - no awkward paper supports hanging out.- You also have digital media reader right in the front so that you can print directly from your media.- The all-in-one is a space saver. It cleared much space off my work table. With all-in-ones, say, if the cartridge goes bust, all parts are affected though.What could be better?=====================- The USB cable and the network cable slots are not on the outside of the machine. You have to lift up the top bed and wire these inside. This takes up about 10-20% of the cable length depending on where you position your PC/laptop relative to the machine.- The Brother cartridges are always relatively expensive compared to, say, Canon. I have found that Brother's tend to be more durable than Canon. But for the higher end Canon's you do pay more. So it is a trade-off between up-front price/running cost (ink refills,cartridge) and reliability.At this point I love the machine. For $99 after MIR and extended 2 yr warranty, it is a great holiday deal!

I love it! Unbelievably easy to set up, and I would have had it set up in minutes if they had included the USB and/or Ethernet cords, they cheaped out on that. So, I had to stop, go out and purchase a cord, and then went back to setting it up. It was so easy, I thought I'd missed something. I had it connected to one desktop and two laptops in less than 10 minutes. It was such fun to sit in the living room on my laptop and print wirelessly to my office for the first time! I also like the fax function. It feeds all the pages into the memory first and then calls the other fax. Such an improvement over my HP which I would have to feed one sheet at a time although it was supposed to feed. It would either feed multiple pages at once or not grab the next page, and most of the time if I had numerous pages, it would disconnect and I would have to call back multiple times to get all the pages through, and when it fed the pages though, the tray the pages were returned to was fashioned in such a way that it would mangle my original documents. I also like the feature where you can set the Brother to manual for faxing, and use only one line for voice, voicemail and fax. When someone calls with a fax, I can pick up the phone, hear the fax tone and hit *51 and it starts receiving the fax. I always know when I am getting a fax so this is a great feature for me. The Brother is attractive, quiet, and I find the print quality quite acceptable. I couldn't be happier! Especially for the price!

AND YOU CAN BEAT THIS PRICE, I GOT MINE HERE ON AMAZON AND IT TOOK AWHILE TO GET HERE WITH THE FREE SHIPPING AND IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT. I WILL UPDATE IN A MONTH OR SO . Easy to setup: run installation cd on your computer to setup up software onto your computer and to setup wirelessly just follow the on-screen wizard located on the lcd screen of the printer. When setting up the printer wirelessly if you have MAC Filtering security on your home network you may have to print out a configuration page to get the MAC address and enter the MAC address into your router settings, otherwise you should be able to allow network access to your printer through your network settings and be on your way. The printer prints very fast in black & white or color. Scanning and Copying features are simple and images come out great.

Please note, this product is NOT compatible with the 465CN printer. It states it is compatible with the LC-51 series ink cartridges - it only fits the 2 printers mentioned. Amazon listed this as compatible with the 465CN and it does not fit. Just FYI ... can't speak to its quality.

It seemed fine for the first week but after that, it no longer would feed card stock. I am using Avery 8869 Card Stock and stopped feeding after only about 6 sheets. After examining the loading tray to try to figure out what was wrong, I noticed a small plastic piece broken from the top of the tray; it's a small tab (there are 2 tabs) and they stick out from the top of the tray. It looks like the rollers are not grabbing the stock. I didn't get it from Amazon but I decided to give my review all the same. Also, the colors don't really seem that vibrant. They look a little washed out.

This printer does so much for such a low price it's compelling, however it's far from perfect. First, it's print quality isn't up to the standards of most any HP printer at the same price. It seems to not saturate the ink enough in many, if not most, situations. It will band many times and I do not have any clue as to why. This probably makes it a no go for those who have to have consistently very high quality printing. For casual use and for pure versatility it's fine though and it offers very good scanning and faxing while being wireless at a price I've yet to see from any other manufacturer.The wireless setup on my Sony Vaio required the software, but when a sales representatives wanted to print an order copy direct off his new Apple laptop he did so with absolutely no additional drivers! I was impressed to say the least.This device is pretty good, but Brother really needs to step up their print quality because they could really have the best all around multi-function machine if they would just get that key element up to the competition.

This is my second MFC by Brother - I had my first one about 2 years, and finally it stopped printing in both red and yellow. I always used cheap ink - not Brother ink - so this may have contributed to it - but the money I saved in the 2 years buying cheaper ink - easily paid for a new MFC - so I'd do it again. I'm very pleased with the quality of this new MFC - I like the clarity of the options, making it very easy to fax, even if you've never owned a fax machine before. I have mine hooked up to an EAD (answering machine) and the fax will pick up if it hears a fax on the other line when the answering machine picks up. I haven't used the scanner yet - but I'm sure it works as well, if not better, then the old one. Overall - this is an excellent MFC for the price, doesn't take up a lot of room, ink is very easy to change, and if you want to buy off brand ink - it is easy enough to find. I would definately buy another Brother in the future.

I bought this product to replace the 210C which was not printing very well. The setup was a breeze and I can now print from both my desktop which is connected via a USB cable and from my notebook using WIFI. The print quality is very good. Great value for the money!

I bought Brother MFC-465CN Inkjet Multi-Function Center. I hardly took 15-20 pages in 2 months period and mostly with black color. Now the CYAN (BLUE) cartridge is empty and the printer won't work even if you want to take printouts with black only. I contacted Customer Service and I was told to buy blue cartrige and replace and then you can take black printing. What a stupid function? Good way to make money. I wish I had returned it within a month, if I had known this. Guys, if you have plenty of money, buy this printer. You will end up paying 50-60$ minimum if you take even few printouts. Customer Service will also recommend the same to buy new cartridges. I made a fool out of myself buying this brand.
