Bought this Item due to it's price and ability to scan in 11 x 17 format. I bought it understanding that at this price it would be made of cheap thin plastic parts that the operator would need to handle carefully to prevent breakage. 3rd time using it I turn it on to scan and it goes blank and no longer comes on. It has been in the repair shop for over a week now. The repair shop had plenty of "brother" products keeping them in business. needless to say I am a bit worried about the reliability of this product. Ease of use, setup, and print quality really don't come into play if the machine does not work and ends up spending more time in the repair shop than here working for me. Perhaps this is an unfortunate one time glitch. My advice would be to check with your local repair shops and find out what machines seem to be frequenting their shelves.

There are two fundamentally irritating things about this device. Number one, printing over the network requires the printer to be powered on. This means that if you are in another room, you have to first get up and walk over to the printer and turn it on, then walk back to the PC to print your documents, and finally return to the printer again and scoop up your stuff. This really stinks if the printer is located on another floor of the house. I had a cheap HP printer that turned itself on whenever a print job was assigned to it. This printer with all its bell & whistles cannot.Number two; the printer will stop whatever it is doing whenever a single ink cartridge is empty. Even if you are printing black & white or grayscale, if magenta is empty, you are out of luck. This recently put my wife in a bind when she was up all night printing for her class and a color went out. We had back-up black ink in a drawer, but forget it. No more printing for an important project until we took an emergency trip to Staples the next morning. Terrible, especially when Brother ink cartridges are not sold everywhere. I offer a quote from the Brother trouble-shooting webpage:Q: Can I print using only the black ink cartridge when the Color cartridges have run out?A: No, your Brother machine is designed to stop ALL printing operations when any of the ink cartridges are empty. This is to ensure the life of the print head and maintain premium print quality. If the unit were to continue printing, print jobs and cleaning cycles would suck air from the empty cartridge and damage the print head. The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge(s).It is unfortunate and inconvenient that I need to purchase expensive color ink cartridges for my primary purpose of printing black & white text documents.

This is my first Brother printer and I am highly impressed. We're actually going to replace an Epson Artisan WiFi printer that we love, due to the additional features this printer offers.Set-up of the printer was a breeze. The ink cartridge system is the best I've seen. All of the ink is stored right at the front, right-hand size of the printer. You don't have to go fumbling around to the inside of the printer to install them, which is great. The ink has separate cartridges for each color (cyan, yellow, magenta and black). This is similar to our Canon (which has 1 additional large black cartridge) and Epson printers (though the Epson also has 3 additional cartridges - a "light" version of each color). I like that the Brother MFC-6890cdw only takes 4 cartridges instead of 5 or 7. I feel like I'm always replacing ink on those other printers. (i.e. Light Cyan is low!!)Our computers picked up the WiFi right away and we are able to wirelessly print from both my MacBook Pro laptop and my husband's Dell desktop, which is on a different level of the house.This printer serves a copier and scanner, but also a Fax machine, which is great. The footprint of the printer is much larger than our Epson Artisan, and a little larger than the Canon All-in-One. However, this printer has more features than the Epson or the Canon, which helps justify the additional size.For one, the printer can print 11 x 17 size paper. This is unusual for home printers and gives it a more useful, business aspect. But also, you can print large photo murals and find other creative uses for this large paper.The printer has a large 4" touchscreen and easy operation for copying and scanning. The ink does not "oversaturate" the paper and make it soggy, as we've seen on other printers we have owned. It holds probably 300-350 sheets of paper, which is a definite bonus. If you have the space for a large printer in your home or home office, you won't be disappointed with the features and performance of this printer.

This all in one was recommended by my tech support professional. I can see why. It does everything, and the ethernet connection for the network bypasses the desktop completely so my laptop can print independently of that. The print quality is superb, color and B&W, and I'm still on the ink cartridges it came with - and I print a lot. I love the scanner, although I haven't figured out quite how to use it fully yet. It is a bit difficult, as it will scan each page of a multi-page document as separate docs, which is frustrating. The copier has an auto feed, which is great too. Unfortunately, the fax does not work, but I think that's our connection and I'm going to have the phone company come out and check on that before I complain. It's great for uploading photos, too. I just have two main gripes; setting it up was so frustrating I almost tore out my hair, and there was a horrible mixup with the delivery and purchase. Fortunately, Amazon finally got it straightened out. I love this printer and I'm glad I bought it.

I had to contact Brother 2 times to get my printer set up wirelessly. Nothing they did and had me do worked. I then had a computer technician come over and he couldn't get it to work. I even contacted Verizon Fios and they gave me all I needed (which I already had) and it still didn't work. I had the proper wire to connect the printer to my router.I use my Brother Lazer printer more than I use this machine so can't really comment on how long the ink lasts. I bought this mainly for the duplex scanner.

I purchased my Digital Copier and Laser Printer for use in my home office. It turned out to be even better than I expected for the price. This is not one of those flimsy built printers that you find connected to home computers. This is a serious piece of office equipment and built quite sturdy. The print quality is excellent; sharp and non-smearing. Most multi-purpose paper seems to work in this machine. I like all the functions and features and this is top-notch equipment and I have used and tried many brands and styles of equipment in my 45 year career working in business offices. I would recommend to anyone. One special note is the multi-purpose feeder tray is at the back of the printer and would not be easily accessible up against a wall.

I've only had the MFC-490CW for about a year, and already, it will not print in black at all. It still prints colors, but this is useless for me as I only print in black and white and I mostly print text. I must have cleaned the black ink cartridge over 30 times in the last few days alone, trying to figure out what's going on. Unfortunately, I think the printer has become useless, and the cost of repairing it will probably be too much so I will most likely end up buying a new printer. Over my dead body will I purchase a Brother printer ever again.

We started our search when we decided that the HP ink price was highway robbery. We've liked other Brother products in the past and the ink prices weren't too bad. From the moment we got it and set it up, it was obviously a quality printer. We can confirm that it seems to have a lot more paper jams than it should, but other than that, it works like a dream. It seems to have one minor paper jam in every 100 pages, but luckily it comes with so many doors, that you can always clear it without hassle.So we have it connected to our router via Ethernet. And the cool thing is, that not only can we use it as a "shared printer" from the machine that's technically it's "server" but we can also create a new TCP/IP port from any other machine and print to it directly even if the "server" is off. We've told the DHCP server in the router to make its IP address static, but really it was unnecessary since we don't have tons of computers turning on and off all the time like we do at work.Our "new computer" is a Windows XP Pro, and our "old laptop" is a Windows 2000 Pro. They both use it just fine.UPDATE: Our new laptop uses Windows 7 and works perfectly with it!! We love it even more now. (March 2011)It has great color printing and superb color copying. We haven't tried the fax yet, but the scanning seems to work great too.Once a day, around 11 am, it wakes up and does a self-check. I think that's good since we sometimes don't use it for a week, and we worry with other printers that they'll dry out and the print quality will be low after a period of nonuse. That happened all the time with our HP printer. It got so bad, that we set our Outlook to remind us to do a test page every few days. Now we can dispense with that and just let the printer do its own self-checking.

Got one from costco. Test page wouldn't print black, so called CS & was sent a new one (they needed a credit card to send you a second one, no charges have appeared as long as you send them the old one within 3 days of getting the new one).Anyway, the new one is working fine so far. Seems to be an OK printer, if you can deal with the hassle of possibly getting a printer with issues. Do like the print quality, cost for cartridges.

Bought this last year, and seven days after the warranty expired the black ink jet clogged, and running the clean function does not clear it. I emailed Brother, who's technician said I did the right thing by running the cleaing process and should have worked. End of story. I will try calling them next week (early am, they are only available 8-5 est). I am especially irritated as I just purchased two new black ink cartridges as I thought low ink was the issue. No more Brother products - they look good and are inexpensive with inexpensive ink replacement; none of which are any good when the thing only works for a year.

Great product thus far no issues works all functions working well, crisp color fast copying... Bought this product for it's capability to print 11x17 copies, small footprint does not take up a lot of space like other 11x17 printers do. Looks good, works good!

but if you dont belived me go to pc richards, best buy, staples.etc try the machine before buying. one the ink that came with the junk where dry, and by the way they are spensive better off buying another machine with the money that you are going to spend for the ink $51.47 total in ink. this is a link of the stores that sells this junk by the way i got stuck with 3 machines or whatever you call them.one thing for sure they are not printer,remember with $20.00 more u could get a better printer EPSON,HP,CANON, ALL IN ONE THOSE ARE THE BEST..PS PLEASE DONT WASTE YOUR MONEYTHE ECONOMY IS BAD TO BE THROWING MONEY AWAY TRUST ME GO AND CHECK THEM OUT TRY THEM BEFORE BUYING. If you are a frustrated HP user, like me, try the Brother MFC-6890CDW. I had a HP all-in-one 7780. The print quality was excellent, but the software was not reliable. Four months after the warranty expired there was a hardware failure, such that I could only print from a computer, nothing else. I purchased the Brother because my wife has had Brother sewing machines for many years and has found them very reliable. Set up, inlcuding wireless, is easy and the printer's touchscreen or computer use is intuitive. Ink is cheaper than HP and readily available. The machine is quiter than its HP counterpart, though slower to print. But unless you are in a hurry, this should make no difference. The primary drawer only holds about 25 pages. All said: If your frustrated with your HP; try the Brother.

We were looking for something with a great value for our new business that wouldn't break our budget but have the versatility to be able to print wirelessly from one part of the office to the other. This unit had all the features at the right price. It was here very quickly and replaced the old printer that didn't have all of the capabilities that this had. We are very pleased with the Brother MFC-790CW.

Having bought my first printer in 1988,This Brother MFC-795CW is the Best One. It even has a built-in answering machine.The last printer was a Samsung Color Laser,nothing but Trouble! The toner replacements cost more than I paid for the new Brother! Try One.

**** Update July 2010The printer completely stopped printing black. Multiple cleaning, installing a brand new Brother cartridge,deleting and re-adding the printer, uninstalling and re-installing drivers -- NOTHING works. Neither from my laptop nor my Mac. (And of course, I really need to print something "right now"!).Googling the problem shows this is a known issue, the print head just dies. Since it is not worth to pay for repairs, I purchased and am awaiting arrival of a Brother MFC495CW.Yes, I am staying with Brother for the reasons mentioned in my original review. The printer suited my needs. BUT - I added a 2 yr warranty program this time and I highly recommend this because you just KNOW the printer is a disposable item, made to and guaranteed to fail at some point within 2 years.---------------(Original review)It's been 6 months since I switched to this printer from an HP 5610 which I just could not make work properly.The Brother MFC490CW worked right out of the box. I set it up for wireless printing, the instructions were clear and fairly easy to follow.I recently switched to a new wireless router. Since the router config was significant, involved and difficult (read 6 long tech calls) I decided to save myself more frustration and contacted Brother tech support for help with reconfiguring the printer. Many KUDOS to their technician Charissa, who led me step by step through resetting up for wireless use. One call is all it took. I am so impressed.I highly recommend this printer. I have used all functions (scan, fax, copy, print) without any difficulties. For the price you can't beat it. And - bonus points for their tech support.

I found the set-up and installation to go rather easy. The wireless set-up went smooth after I discarded the directions and just let the printer's own wireless set-up wizard do the job. The wizard found my router with no problems and I was ready to print in no time at all. The wireless works great and so convenient.The printer is quiet and prints text very well. I have not tried a photo print yet, so can not comment on that. The one downside I did find with this printer is the paper tray and the amount of, or rather lack of, decent paper storage. Loading paper and or envelopes is not difficult it's just plain inconvenient. The paper storage is really lacking so if you do a lot of printing you'll be adding paper to the tray quite frequently.Now a little note regarding Amazon: On my last couple of purchases I have noticed that Amazon has started a trend of sending an email the same day or the next advising of the item being shipped, and therefore the order can no longer be changed. However, when checking the tracking with the carries I've found that as many as 3-4 days pass before the carrier acknowledges receipt of the item and now in the system. Prior to this I have always found Amazon's notifications and shipping timely and accurate. This current trend has the feeling of being a bit "under handed" and unlike previous dealings with Amazon.

I wanted a full wireless printer, and I was a little skeptical at first because on review of other "wireless" printers I had found that they are usually not fully wireless (in order to use the scan to PC feature, some printers requires it be connected to USB). However, reading the good reviews of this printer, and because it had a good price, I decided to go for it.It Works! Apart from a minor setback during installation (it wouldn't accept my network ID, I had to select the IP address number instead), it works as intended. It even scans wirelessly.I love the fact that it goes to sleep when not in used (I keep it on at all times) and wakes quickly when submitting a printing request. Scanning is as easy and did I mentioned, wireless. It does give nice picture prints (maybe not as nice as other printers, but still good enough quality for my needs).My only gripe is the paper tray. It does feel somewhat flimsy, it doesn't have a high capacity of paper, and in order to use envelopes you need to remove the paper. Also, when printing a 4x6 picture, the printer setup doesn't give you this option from the list of paper size, instead you need to select, I believe is called LPicture/HPicture or something like that, which turns out is their way of stating 4x6, why couldn't they just state 4x6 is besides me, especially when the paper tray only accepts limited picture paper size. I would've liked to see either a dual paper tray, or a bypass tray that would allow for envelope or unusual size paper printing without having to remove the main paper from the tray.This is an All-in-One printer. Though what would make it even more so would be if it had double sided printing capability.Definitely worth your money.

1) this printer has great features but won't last2) less than 1 year old, we haven't even used up the original ink cartridge and the printer is already broken. Try googling "MFC-490CW won't print". You will find that my experience is a common one, and the only solution is an expensive print head replacement.3) This printer does automatic cleanings even if you don't print much, so all your ink cartridges will go dry even if you don't use them. As soon as one of the color cartridges goes dry, you can't print even in grayscale

I purchased two of these for the multipage scanning only at the office and scanning/printing at home. I use adobe to backup a lot of documents and have found this to work pretty well. It isn't the fastest printer and I find it ridiculous that it will not let you print in black and white if you're out of any color ink. That is very frustrating. The print quality is nice though. I have not tried printing any pictures, only documents both in color and B&W. It does tend to pull multiple pages through the scanner at times. I will eventually upgrade to some type of multipage scanner which will hopefully be more efficient, hold more pages and do front/back all at once without the issue of multiple pages being pulled through together. It has done well for the initial reason I purchased it and the price was great at under $100 each.

Magenta print head is clogged and is uneconomical to repair(cost $85 from Brother). The service center wants $100 just to look at it. They don't even sell service manuals, and even if I were to replace the part myself I'm better off with new printer.Brother Ink is obnoxiously expensive and you have to replace it at least twice a year, or risk clogging the print heads(they suggest 6 month intervals). Generic ink is a risk, if the print heads clog because of it you have a doorstop with no warranty. A lot if ink is wasted during cleaning and b&w printing uses the colors.Ink cost as much the cartridges that contain print heads. I will never buy a printer with an ink tank system again. The three color cartridges with a tiny quantity of ink cost almost $40, this is more than an HP or lexmark cartridge with a printhead.Two stars because I can use it as as a greyscale printer(until that clogs) and fax/scanner.

Let start by saying I bought this specifically to do wireless printing. Unfortunately wireless does no function with my linksys router. It turns out that brother has a software problem that uses a printer name to connect to the router via wireless instead of an IP address. While I can query toner use via wireless, printing is a non-starter. Brother blames this on the router. I blame it on brother. They should make a wireless printer driver and software that is compatible with one of the most popular routers made. I have purchased my last brother device- Look elsewhere for good compatible products and decent support.

The printer does what it's supposed to do. The automatic feed for the copier is a nice feature for a printer that's inexpensive. The printer itself is compatible with Linux; however, as of right now, the scanner's not making a connection with the computer. If you are a Linux user and know you're going to be using the scanner, I'd seek out a different product that's 100% guaranteed to be compatible.

I bought this printer MFC-440cn for around $100. I love the quality and quickness of speed that I get when I use it.The best feature I LOVE is that it is PDF creator capable! How super is that? Well considering the price you would pay to have your files converted into PDF format, search for yourself and you will see this feature alone is worth the money I paid for this printer. I read all the complaints but those are so minor, and I have never had any problems with my printer, except for maybe a paper jam or two. I find the ink very cheap online for about 2.00 a cartridge using the compatiblity ink. I also bought the self fill kit to refill my empty cartridges myself. I'm not going to complain about the price of cartridges if I am not willing to search for a better solution. If anyone out there is wanting to sell their printer, list it here on amazon, I would love to buy it!

Initially the printer was wonderful. Set up for wireless was simple. While I was still using the 1/2 filled ink cartridges that came with the printer the prints were awesome. When those ran out, I replaced them with new cartridges, the ones recommended by Brother, and the black stopped working. I tried cleaning it multiple times yet the black never worked correctly. This is definitely a throwaway printer. I will not buy a Brother again.

I purchased this item mainly to replace my older fax machine that used films. I don't receive many faxes, so it took a long time for the last machine to replace the film, and then it went crazy. (After I put the new film in but keep saying need a new one....) So I decided to get a inkjet machine. At the time(over a year ago), this was one of high rated and reasonable price (I paid close to $300), but not long after I got it, the ink just gone done a lot (used less then 10 pages). I read one of the review somewhere, the machine will use the color ink even you only print out black and white. And if you don't replace the inks, the machine will stop working. I normally only buy from the manufacturer, but it would cost $40-$50 to replace all, I was happy to get good deal from Amazon market place, it saved me a lot. But same thing happen again, the ink gone down (almost all gone), without me received more then few pages of faxes, just unbelievable.Other then the ink issue, the phone works well. I had used the printer couple times when I first got it, and the color just not acceptable to me (to print photos), my HP printer does better job, so this one just stay as phone/fax machine. For it's current price at Amazon for $150, I think it's decent price for it's value, but you must prepare to deal with ink cost, until a better solution come out, I will keep getting cheap ink from Amazon.

I agree w/ many of the reviewers that the machine is sleek, easy to set-up and use. However, in nine (9) months of ownership, I am always having trouble with it. I've spent hours speaking to Brother's support team to little or no avail. We can get it working for a week or month, then the wireless printing/scanning capability ceases to function.When it works, it's great, but I need more reliability from a printer.

We received this printer a few days ago and so far we have been very pleased with its performance. We already own a Lexmark X2350 3-in-1 printer which is connected to our desktop via USB but both my husband and I now have laptops as well, so we thought it would be practical to buy a wireless printer that we could print and scan to directly from our laptops.The Quick Setup Guide that the printer comes with gives you two options to connect the printer wirelessly. Initially we had some difficulty connecting it using the "automatic wireless one push method", so we tried the "typical wireless setup in infrastructure mode" and that worked just fine. (By the way, we have a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router). After that initial connection, it took only a few more minutes to load the software into both of our laptops (one Mac and one PC running Windows Vista 64-bit), as well as our desktop running Windows XP, and all three are able to print and scan to the printer without any problems.Our favorite features so far are:1) Quiet printing2) Scanning into any of the computers connected to the printer3) Good print quality (better than our Lexmark)4) Less expensive ink5) Very good valueWe haven't tried the fax feature since we don't have a landline, but it's good to know that we have it in case we ever need it. We gave the printer 4 stars because we've only been using it for a short time, and don't yet know what it's long-term performance will prove to be.So far though, so good. :)

I got this February 2009 and it seemed like it would be a great printer. A few months later after I went to replace the Black ink cartridge, it stopped printing black completely. I tried another black cartridge and still wouldn't print black. I tried going through the cleaning process as Brother suggested in the FAQ's on their website but nothing worked. I didn't have time to contact brother right away and by the time I did, they told me they would send me a factory refurbished replacement and to send mine back. I did that. I got the new one and it printed fine for a couple months. One day I got a paper jam and tried clearing it and now it won't stop running it's wheels and says there's a jam after a few mins. There's nothing in there for paper, I have checked. I am frustrated with this machine at this point! I will never buy a Brother printer again!

I read the other reviews of this printer. I can't believe I am the only one who got a "lemon," when I bought this. It routinely and often stops working, the print quality is marginal at best and envelopes get stuck in it. This is the worst printer I have ever owned. To add insult to injury, Brother support is horrible.

I needed to print 11 x 17 format for drawings, and this printer does the job. While it doesn't handle 11 x 17 originals, it does print them from file. It also takes up less space than it's big Brother, and as I use it in conjunction with my HP 6310, space is limited. Having two printers makes not having to change paper possible; I just direct output to the appropriate printer.Being a full-function machine, it also backs up the 6310's fax function, even printing out faxes the HP misses (mis-dialed fax #). I love the ability to only purchase the ink color needed, and the Brother cartriges are much larger and way cheaper than HPs. This is a good product-and without throwing stones at HP, Brother has a superior product at a great price.

This product is the the most extordinary waste of time and money spent in a long time. One must have a MS degree in Computer Tech in order to follow the directions for installation. Then, after emailing the company to request clarification, they copy and paste info from the manual you already have (because one evidently could not read the manual and distinguish between the 2). The Thing still does not print from my laptop, despite following the directions, and the FAQ's on the company's website don't match the problem. To top it off, the desk PC won't read the CD for installation, so if I do get the Thing working, I still have to use 2 printers.I will be returning the Thing to Office Max... but wait... I have to pay a $15 re-stocking fee because the box was open!So, to all non-computer people BEWARE!!!!

I don't understand how this product could get any decent reviews. I suppose it does a reasonable job when it first comes out the box and I expect most people write their review soon after receiving the item. It goes downhill quick. It uses more ink than any other printer I have ever used. It won't print, scan, copy or perform any other function when any of the cartridges are low. Printer goes through realigning and cleaning cycle every time it is powered on. 1st page is always only a partial print. Inconsistent printing performance. Stay away from this product. It is awful.

If you just want to print on letter size paper and never do anything else, this is probably going to be just fine for you. My dissatisfaction comes from the clunky and downright unfriendly hardware and terrible paper handling.To connect the device to your computer/network via USB or Ethernet, you have to lift up the entire scanner glass assembly to get to this crazy in-the-guts-of-the-machine port area to snake your cables through and plug in. I never though that external USB and RJ45 connectors were a feature, but after using this thing I'll never take them for granted again.After following all the instructions, I was never able to get the MFC-5490CN to connect to my network. I was forced to use USB and printer sharing to allow other machines to print to the Brother.Now for the paper handling gripe. I "upgraded" to this machine from a cheap little Canon printer. The little $50 printer from Canon managed to handle CD/DVD paper sleeves with round plastic windows just fine. I print on the back of the sleeves in color and with no problem with the old Canon. This Brother machine, though, couldn't handle them at all. It would slip, snag, snarl and jam every 10th sleeve. The output was difficult to access (reach your hand into the cavity of the machine to get it) and when it did finally print a sleeve, the rollers obviously slipped, because the text was fuzzy. It was as if the sleeves were sliding around under the ink nozzles. Every sleeve that made it through was also severely wrinkled.Since printing on CD/DVD paper sleeves is a big part of my printer usage, I had no choice but to get rid of this thing.Also, beware that this machine ships with "starter" ink cartridges. This means that they have much less ink than the cartridges you'll end up buying. This seems like a very anti-consumer move on the part of Brother.You can be sure that this is the last device from Brother that I purchase.

I was replacing a Lexmark wireless All-in-One when I bought this printer from Brother. I must say the difference is night and day. The Lexmark was clunky. The wireless was hit and miss and setting it up on my network was a pain! You couldn't scan wireless and there was no built-in fax.This printer from Brother is a breath of fresh air for the price. In fact, I paid $89 for it just 1 week ago...at the time of this review it's been marked down to $79. Back to the review; the wireless setup is SO easy (one touch if your router supports it). Even on my encrypted (WPA-PSK) network, I had no trouble setting it up.I'm using Snow Leopard and have no issues with compatibility. The utilities leave a bit to be desired, but for the most part, I don't use them anyways. The OCR works, scanning to a file works, and printing (quickly!) works.The print quality isn't excellent, but someone shopping for a wireless all-in-one in this price range isn't overly concerned with print quality. It would be fine for 90% of all documents. I should not that text quality is excellent...but images aren't super great...again, that's not a con for a printer in this price range, just FYI.Finally, the price for replacement refills isn't prohibitive. Installation of the cartridges is also super easy. This would be a great All-in-one for kids rooms, the dorm, or older folks who need a simple solution!

Initially, I loved this printer. It wasn't too expensive and it had all the features I needed. Print quality was fine for my purposes. The paper tray is kind of flimsy feeling, but no big deal. Mostly, I just used this printer to print out papers for school. I had maybe printed with color a couple times so the first time I ran out of ink I wasn't too suprised. I found it a bit odd that my color cartridges ran out though I hadn't printed in color for months but I ignored this. I found it irritating that because my magenta ink was empty (soon followed by yellow and cyan) I was not allowed to print in greyscale (for reference, my black ink was full). But I just went along with it and bought new cartridges.This is where it gets bad. After replacing the color cartridges, I set my default to greyscale and never (not one single time) printed in color with the fresh cartridges. Three months later, my color cartridges are empty. Honestly? And since Brother is evil, I now cannot print black and white with MY FULL BLACK INK CARTRIDGE BECAUSE MY COLOR CARTRIDGES THAT I NEVER USED ARE EMPTY. Complete joke. Well, guess what Brother? Rather than buying new cartridges this time I am buying a whole new printer because I would rather spend 100 dollars at a different company than give you another cent for your worthless disappearing ink. I am going to destroy this printer ala "Office Space". Oh yeah, and I figured out what the MFC stands for in the product name: M****r F*****g C**t 440cn. Sorry to be crude, but this is just how much I hate this printer.

Normally, I hate printers, but this printer has made me a convert! I've had Epson, Canon and HP printers and all have been fussy from the very start.In the four months I've owned this printer I have had NO problem. Not one. The setup was extremely easy -- even setting it up for the wireless network was a piece of cake. Printing, faxing, scanning and copying are extremely simple.The printer is fairly small and, because it's wireless, it doesn't need to be near the computer so you can place it wherever you want. Mine sits unobtrusively on a bookshelf across the room from the computer. It's nice to have the ability to print documents from your laptop when your working outside!A few weeks ago I bought one for my Mom's small business because she needs to print a lot of labels. On her HP printer she would have to feed the labels one at a time or they would cause a paper jam. The Brother handles a whole stack of labels with no paper jams! She loves this printer as much as I do.The only criticism I have is that I had to make some adjustments in the print settings on my computer to get the colors to look as vibrant as I like. It took a few test pages to finally get it right.Of course, I can't speak to durability but for now this is the best, least fussy, most functional printer I've ever used...not to mention the easy faxing, scanning and copying.

This is the 4th Brother printer I've purchased. One is a simple laser with duplex, the second was an "all in one," and the third was a color laser. All the others were laser, not inkjet. All, until this one, have installed like a breeze. We do a lot of scans and copies at the office, and I have been totally impressed with the other all in one machine. You can stick a stack of papers in the feed, and go to your networked computer and then scan all of them flawlessly. THAT is why I decided to buy the 490cw. Unfortunately we have only managed to connect ONE of the 4 computers we have to it on our network, and THAT only after spending hours and hours on the internet in forums troubleshooting the problem. We tried the ethernet method, the wireless method but nothing worked until we set up static ip address, and tweaked other parts of the configuration. Now it works fine wirelessly, but only on one computer. We finally managed to get one more computer to print on it, but only by loading the printer drivers separately from the packaged set up disk. To be fair, I should mention that the printer performs very well on the one computer we managed to connect to it, and that we had not problem whatsoever connecting via usb directly to the computer... but why do that when you bought a WIRELESS printer. Maybe others have had no problem, but we had an HORRIBLE experience,

We run a small design company from our dining room. With space a premium, we needed an all-in-one fax, copier and printer, and the price on this one was very attractive. We had a Brother already, but we needed 11 x 17 prints in house to have for our customers. Unpacking didn't take long. It includes a cord to plug into your phone line, but it probably will be too short for most users. We plugged it in and ran a couple of test prints with no problem-- the quality was just like the test prints on the display model.The software for this loaded and did everything it was supposed to do, but it took 30-40 minutes to install. I didn't install this on a slow computer, either. I don't know how much hard drive space it takes. After the epic installation process, printing from the computer was more than satisfactory for us in both speed and quality. I don't know if I would use this as my main photo printer; we haven't tried it with photo paper, and don't have much need for that. You'll get a little over 5 pages a minute with text, and a little over 2 with images. The speed is great for us; a larger business would do better with some kind of dedicated, single-function laser printer.The trays hold a lot of paper, with a 50 sheet auto feeder and a 150 sheet tray. Loading can be tricky since you have to remove the tray, but the manual has good instructions and you'll only have to learn this once. I love having separate color cartridges-- less waste! Not to mention that Brother includes the three color and the black cartridges in high yield, so you'll be ready to go right away. Scans come out great, and took less than a minute. Faxes are faxes-- I think that it's only as fast as the machine sending to us (we rarely fax anything out). The little color LCD is nice. I don't have much use for it for image editing, but I can see how others would like this feature.Overall this is a great, multi-use printer for small business, and is affordable for personal use as well.EDIT: Those of you using Vista should know that there is a known problem with this printer's drivers and Vista. Brother is aware of the issue, but it's a problem with Vista and not with Brother. We tried it on two PCs with Vista Basic and one with Vista Premium, and none of them worked. It works fine on an XP computer.

I purchased this wireless all-in-one printer for $79.99 several weeks ago. I am impressed with the compact, stylish design. Wireless setup was easy, although the startup information in the manual and startup guide was unnecessarily complicated. After connecting an ethernet cable to my router, all that was required was to step through the menu on the printer screen.The Print, Scan, Copy and Fax functions all work well. The controls are logical and well laid out. I particularly like the two Start buttons, one for color output, the other for B/W. It's much easier than selecting from a menu. The wireless printing works well. The print speed is not fast, but for my uses it is adequate. Quality of color printing and 4 X 6 photos are at least on par with the Canon i860 this printer replaces.The printer uses four ink tanks. Ink level is indicated on the printer screen and on the computer. So far, if the ink level monitors are correct, the printer uses ink very efficiently. I purchased replacement ink cartridges from [...] but have yet to need to install them.Overall, this has proven to be a very nice printer for my needs. Considering the price, it's an outstanding buy.
