I did like my printer, only I was thinking that I could print paper in color but not, I didn't see that on the description saying it's only print in black and white. but, it give excellent job thank you for being helpful to me. just I want you to send item in my country next time, It became very expensive with the taxes of my country and pounds to pay by eps. if you could send it directly to my country would be better I want to buy now another picture and paper printer, I want to know if you could send it to dominican Republic and a cheapest way.

This is our second Brother 4-in-1. It is for home use. The first one we had lasted 3 years and then needed a new printhead. We were told we had caused the problem by using generic ink cartridges. I don't know if that is true or not, but on this one we are using Brother ink cartridges only. We have had no trouble sending or receiving faxes. Our sent faxes have graph drawings and we had to 'fine-tune' the settings so the delivered copy was received the way it was sent and not blurry. We haven't had any problems with the copying features. We have voice mail through our cable communications company so we have not used the message center on this machine, but we did use it on the other one we had and no problems with that either. One problem we do have, and also had on the other one, is that when the phone is answered on the machine, no other phone can be picked up in the house so that a person can join in on the conversation. I doubt it is a machine error, but Brother customer service could not help us with it.Another issue I have with it is if you want to fax multiple sheets of paper you have to stand at the machine because loading the paper and then 'catching' the completed sheets can get complicated. The completed sheet is coming out on top of where the new sheet is going in, if that makes sense, and if you are individually feeding the sheets, you have to be quick. We do not have wireless so I can't comment on that.Despite the phone and fax issues, we really like the machine. We have had this one 2 years and will continue using Brother products.

This copier/printer/scanner works very well. It can handle everything up to 11x17 to copy, scan, print, etc. And every brother printer I've ever used produces very high quality prints. Yes, they are a bit slow, but I'm alright with that. I'm more than happy to wait a few extra seconds to get very high quality prints. You can also find extremely cheap ink here on amazon. Like, 7 dollars for a pack of 12 replacement cartridges (3 black, and 3 of each color). So, it's very well worth it. I give it 5 stars happily.

Decided to upgrade my printer and purchased this Brother all in one after reading the reviews. Most seemed positive for the most part, but of course some were negative. I decided to take my chances on this printer at a price I could afford. I didn't use it right away since my old printer (which was only a printer) was still working and I was so used to it. The brother being a all in one, was new to me and more advanced. When my old printer started to fail, I said IT'S TIME TO HOOK UP THE BIG BOY!! First thing I noticed was no USB or cable that came with the unit, so I had to purchase one. Next, I spent at least two days trying to get the thing to print as the test pages only printed in blue and magenta with a slight yellow. ABSOLUTELY NO BLACK PRINT AT ALL!! Even though the cartridge was full. I later gave up and called Brother for assistance. They advised me to take the printer to the nearest service center for the ink tank to be replaced stating the tank may be clogged. I could not understand for the life of me why they would suggest this, since I'd never used the printer and had only printed test pages. Later the worker for the service center affiliated with Brother contacted me to schedule an appointment. I asked him why would the ink tank need replacement if I never used the printer? That's when he informed me "BROTHER HAD A RECALL ON THIS MODEL PRINTER DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH THE INK TANK". WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL ME?? Needless to say, I am not satisfied with this purchase and as of this date have no way to get the printer to the service center without a vehicle. Brother advised they can not send the tank to me in attempt to install it myself. They further advised I could ship the printer to the service center. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW HOW MUCH THIS WOULD COST?? Brother did not say they would pay for the shipping. AT THIS TIME, I'M STUCK WITH A ALL IN ONE PRINTER I'VE NEVER USED. THUMBS DOWN!!!

I researched all the brands and models in the under $500 range, read lots of reviews here and elsewhere, and determined that the Brother DCP-8085DN ranked as good or better than all its competitors. It has the feature set I wanted for my new business, including the ability to scan to PDF, several image file formats, and OCR. It is also a very quick printer for single-side and reasonably quick for duplex printing. So far, I've run 2-1/2 reams through this printer and scanned about 100 pages and I am fully satisfied.

I have had this multi-function printer since migrating to Windows 7. I was mad at the time at HP, and now I seriously regret the decision to try a lesser brand. It required HOURS to get the wireless connection to work the first time, and any little hiccup in my wifi network required still more hours of troubleshooting to get it working again. I just replaced the yellow ink for the second time, and suddenly the black doesn't want to print. Online help has no solution for this even though it appears to be a common problem, and Brother customer service is not open on weekends probably because no one is buying their products anymore. So it is going to be recycled pronto, along with the wasted ink I just bought. Early Christmas gift to myself tomorrow is a new printer.

I've owned 2 Brother printers, and 3 HP printers in the last 5 years. The latest HP that we bought (6500 model) gave up the ghost after only 2 months so it prompted me to go back to Brother to buy another one knowing full well that I can refill the ink cartridges on my own and save a lot of money over the course of the life of the printer. We print on average 2,000 pages a month, so this printer fits in with our print style, since it is rated at about 2200 to 2500 pages per month. It's reasonably quiet, it doesn't need to re-align the print heads after every print job like the last HP used to, so it's reasonably quiet both when printing and between print jobs. The text when put side by side to our monstrously large HP color laser is easily rivaled in black. The color images that we have printed with this printer are nothing to sneeze at but they are certainly not the quality that one gets by taking your photos in somewhere to print them. But more than acceptable to send to family, friends and business associates in my opinion. The printer comes with Scanport 11SE which now works on Vista (my old Brother printer had Scanport 9 which wouldn't work with vista), which to me is a big benefit to keep my scanned documents organized and right at my fingertips (so to speak). It's got all the right camera memory stick ports including CF (The HP 6500 decided not to host the CF card slot for some reason and it's the one all our Nikon cameras use). This printer is very large however, that is probably the only thing I can say bad about it. But I guess it's got to be large to be able to print out 11x17 pages. It's definitely not for the dorm room if any of you college folks are thinking about getting it unless you've got a nice sized desk area as it is LARGE!The first one we bought would not print black right out of the box, no amount of print head cleaning could coax it to print with the black ink so we returned it for another one (same make and model) and it worked right out of the box perfectly. It's nice to have it hooked up to our LAN network so that any of our computers can use it to print if they so wish. Wireless would be nice but at the price of $129.98 (staples price) I don't honestly expect them to put in a wireless network but wired is fine and it's faster for large documents. The only oddity about this printer is the quick dial, and what I mean is that there is no removable faceplate that you might print the names next to the numbers so that you remember who is on what quick dial, instead it is silkscreened onto the plastic of the printer, so one wouldn't exactly want to add a quick dial and write the person name on their printer, because what if you want to change it, how would you remove the ink writing from the plastic printer body? It seems strange that it's not an insert of some kind that you can write on. Maybe Brother expects me to put a piece of tape over it and write on that. I dunno, it's strange. One other thing. It would have been nice if the paper tray could have held more than 150 pages. For people like us that print a lot of pages (and why else would you buy a printer that is rated at 2500 pages a month unless you were going to use it), the 150 page paper tray is a bit skant, I would rather it had held 250 like the HP 6500 does.Apparently Brother still can't make a printer that can keep printing in black when the color cartridges are empty for some reason, that is their biggest problem for me.

This is my second All-In-One printer that supports wireless printing. Ever since have I used a wireless printer, I became a big fan of it, and I will not buy any printer that is not wireless. It is so convenient to put a printer anywhere and is great to print, scan and fax wirelessly. My first wireless AIO, the Epson Artisan 800 has been working great and I expected more from the Brother MFC-6890CDW which is more expensive than the Epson Artisan 800. In short, the Artisan 800 and the MFC-6890CDW target different markets, and I will tell you why.First of all, the MFC-6890CDW is a huge printer. Compared with the MFC-6890CDW, Epson AIO looks so cute. Most of my friends who have visited my house thought it was a traditional photo copier. It is that big. The unique feature of the MFC-6890CDW is that it supports a duplex (double-sided) printing. I have never seen an Inkjet printer that does this and it really impressed me. I was expecting a soggy paper from a duplex printing output, however, the output was great. When I compared the printing from the same source on a single-sided and a double sided output, the former was definitely darker. I did it on the same setting, so my guess is that the printer might reduce the amount of ink when it does the duplex printing. This makes perfect sense to me.When it comes to photo printing, the MFC-6890CDW does the job well. However, the quality of the photo printing is slightly worse than the Artisan 800. And the MFC-6890CDW supports borderless printing on photo paper. The MFC-6890CDW still makes quality photos and is good enough for a business presentation. The MFC-6890CDW has a 4.2 inch nice color LCD touch screen, however, the pictures shown on the LCD from the USB memory connected to it are not great. The color is washed out and you cannot judge the quality of the original pictures. It has 'Enhance Photo' feature built-in, however, you might not do the job well using this LCD screen. It is better to have the LCD screen than not, however, the quality of the screen should have been better for a printer with a heavy price tag.The text printing is very clear and fast if you do not choose the duplex printing. It can prints and scans up to 11' by 17' papers. There are not many AIO printers to handle this size of the paper and for some people, this printer would be a definite choice. And it supports Windows and Mac flawlessly. As far as the wireless feature is concerned, this is a great printer. While I set it up, I did not have to connect the USB cable even once. The wireless setup was very smooth and simple, and I can print, scan and fax wirelessly. The wireless scanning works without any problem and sending a fax wirelessly is cool. It does the job as it is supposed to, and I love it.Concerning features, it does not have anything fun like the Epson Artisan 800. It does not support printing on a CD/DVD. You cannot make calendars, post cards or coloring books on the printer alone like the Artisan 800. However, it scans the document and saves it to to a memory card with a single touch of the LCD screen.Overall, this is a very sturdy AIO printer. The duplex printing is fantastic and the wireless capability is awesome. The quality and the speed of the printing are very satisfactory, and I did not have trouble or paper jams so far. But, if you are looking for a feature-rich, fun AIO color printer for your home, the MFC-6890CDW might not be for you. Also, I really liked the printed manual; it is hard to see this kind of a printed manual these days. The MFC-6890CDW does its job best when it is sitting at an office.

The paper feeder on the top pulls multiple pages at once every time. It will then either jam or pull the batch of pages all the way through and copy only the first page. Brother sent me a replacement machine, which did exactly the same thing, so this is apparently a design defect. The only recourse with Brother is for them to keep sending out the same model. Meanwhile, I spent at least five hours on the phone with Brother with phone calls over two separate days. Their hold times are extremely long. The first person who answers (after a 20-30 minute wait) always has to transfer me to a different person which is another 20-30 minute hold time. I finally called Amazon to try and obtain a refund. Since I called more than 30 days after the purchase, I'm not eligible for a refund. However, once they receive the machine back, he said they will refund 50% to 80% of my purchase price depending on the condition of the machine. Not ideal, but it's better than nothing. I would definitely not recommend Brother machines because of these issues and the poor customer service.

Some other brands might have paperless outgoing FAX sending, so does this printer. (Print to the FAX "printer" in Windows printer list and not to your default printer). Really still the same machine but two different printers in Windows. It will even ask for the phone number to use. Also, if you are on one the junk FAX lists and many of us seem to end up on - the free trips to Vegas, Hawaii etc (after a 4 - 8 hour real estate arm twist!) you can end up with a lot of wasted ink/paper. So how about paperless incoming FAX's? Yes, Brother printers (MFC-5890CN included) have what is called PC-FAX Receive that is an option. Paper manual is nearly useless for setting it up - see the included CD's more detailed manual for full setup details. More or less you install the PC-FAX receive software in the PC's startup folder (I'm using XP) so that it is always running and also turn off incoming FAX print to paper option via the setup screens. After that your incoming FAX's are only digital files that you can read on your PC's screen. Print or delete or leave them in memory. (up to the memory limits) Great feature if you receive lots of FAX's that don't need to be saved. One more way to save money with this printer and not wasting ink and paper.

We've owned this printer 4-5 yrs now. Ink cartridges frequently need to be replaced, whether you have been using the printer or not (and the Brother ones are EXPENSIVE). You can clearly see ink still in the cartridge when you remove it from the printer as there is a clear window on the cartridge (but putting it back doesn't help, the printer still says it is empty and usually will then register that there is no cartridge at all).Love the fax and scan/photocopy features. Photo printing never worked well as no matter how much we fiddle, the printer has never drawn the paper in straight, so a tiny corner of each picture will be white. Also, we did not receive an install disk and have frequently had the printer just disconnect itself from our wireless network. Reconnecting it is extremely difficult and the download for installation from Brother's website doesn't work. I gave setup a 2 because at least is has wireless, even if it is a pain to get working.I will be replacing this printer ASAP with a non-Brother model (as from reviews I see the ink issues are common with this brand).

I'm not the techy guru... so this review is for those of you who know just enough about computers and printers to get through your day.Good:1. Relatively easy set-up. I haven't tried to receive faxes through my computer yet (which takes additional set-up steps) but everything else went smoothly.2. Printing comes out pretty quick, black and white or color (colors are also accurate).3. Ink lasts for a decent length of time, my Canon was MUCH worse. I also like the way it notifies you of how much ink is left. It does a little pop-up on the lower right side of your computer screen, then silently goes away after a few seconds.4. Replacing the ink is easy, you just open this little door on the right and pop it in. No more chasing the ink well back and forth every time you open the cover!5. I like the way it prints, you just press print and it does it right away. My Canon always had this extra screen that would pop-up and stay up until you clicked it closed. Drove me nuts! This all-in-one tries to be as unobtrusive as possible.6. The wireless feature is a godsend - now I can be on the laptop in the kitchen or living room and just send whatever I need to the printer in the home office without unplugging and plugging in wires.7. Faxing is reliable and accurate, but what's with the post-fax tray? It's too small, so the papers tend to just slide right off the machine after they come out. It's works the way it's supposed to, though, and that's really what matters.Bad:1. Maybe I just print a lot, but it always seems to be out of paper... I think the tray is just too small. Unlike other printers where you can just slip the paper into the top feeding tray when you notice the paper is running low, you have to remove the Brother's bottom paper tray to load it with paper then put it back in before continuing. An extra step that's slightly annoying.2. Originally, I couldn't get the wireless feature to work on my Vista laptop. Ruining the whole point of the purchase. Customer Service was VERY friendly and tried to help, but after several steps basically told me I was screwed and should contact my laptop manufacturer - Gateway. Well, lesson learned, Gateway's Customer Service has got to be the WORST - no help at all unless I wanted to pay around $200 just for them to THINK about my problem (and I've only owned the laptop for just over a year, figures). So I started searching around for help online with the error message I was getting, and lo and behold, I fixed the problem myself! Amazing, since I'm not that techy.3. The cordless phone that it came with was defective and would not let you hear phone calls. You couldn't even hear a dial tone unless you pressed speaker phone. Strangely, the person on the other end could hear me fine. This became a major issue trying to get only the phone swapped out. After numerous phone calls and finally going through a supervisor, I had to fax my Amazon receipt and put a $1 deposit on my credit card to ensure I sent the defective phone back. It's like they didn't believe me that it didn't work, I think they thought I turned the volume way down and didn't know how to adjust it. New phone does work, but my unit's phone cradle does NOT come off the base and it doesn't have an AC adaptor (to allow you to put the phone somewehere else on the desk if need be). It should (based on the product description), but you're stuck if it doesn't...though it's not the end of the world.4. The fax format is tricky if you have your own answering machine or voicemail through your phone company. You have to leave the Brother on MANUAL, but then you have to change it each time you want to receive faxes. It won't receive automatically without interfering with your personal answering machine.5. Sometimes it simply won't turn on. It gives me 3 short beeps. The woman that was helping with the phone exchange suggested I plug it into the wall - that it might not be getting enough power to the unit. It won't reach a wall outlet where I've placed it, just the power strip. It's only happened 3 times since I've owned it (2 months), but I've figured out that if I unplug it and then plug it back in it turns on fine. Maybe she's right about the power, but I've never heard of that.Overall:Would I purchase this unit again? Most likely, though now I've seen it advertised at a local warehouse for $20 less so that's annoying. I got this one because of the cordless phone feature, but now that I have it you could easily purchase the step below model that has the regular phone. That unit is even less money for basically the same features. The good news is that I don't see needing to replace this unit any time soon. It's construction is sturdy and I don't think its features will lose their usefulness. My Canon was always having ink/printing issues and I thought about taking a sledgehammer to it. I definitely prefer the Brother product over Canon.

I bought one of these as a refurb about 3 years ago. What attracted me was the cheap toner, network, and duplex capabilities.Having owned it for all these years, the only thing that is really bad about it is that it causes the lights to dim when printing. I am still on my original toner that came with it. It jams on occasion as even the most expensive PSC devices do, but it gives you text instructions on the LCD display for how to resolve the jam which are usually pretty good.On windows, the install is dead easy. This printer works great with CUPS in network mode so you don't have to tie up a computer just to act as a print server. Brother has a dedicated Linux driver and instruction site which is very helpful. However, Linux setup is a bit more involved. I have been scanning and printing over the network to/from this printer using Ubuntu for years, and I couldn't be happier.

Well, give it up for another company that sent it's customer service people jobs overseas - they can only read from a script and nothing else. I purchased this printer at Staples yesterday; got a great deal on it (SO I THOUGHT) 'cause they were clearancing them out for the newer model. I even looked at Amazon reviews prior to purchasing it. Some were so stellar I thought, "Hey, I have to give this a try!" but the bad ones really made me nervous. Guess I should've gone with my gut.I happily unpacked it today, put the cartridges in, and it printed out a perfect page. HOORAY! NOT SO FAST THERE 'PARDNER...I shouted in jubilation far too quickly. Immediately it went into convulsions (that machine gun sound) and gave me the dreaded error, "Unable to Init. AF". I went through all the troubleshooting online and called their "Customer service" center (and I use this term loosely). He said it definately needed to be replaced, and would be happy to assist. He said that he'd need a credit card to put a $50 hold on my credit card "In case the original machine is not returned". WHAT? I said, "I don't have a credit card". My only other two options were to take it to service center (this thing is HEAVY...I should not have to lug it an hour away to get it repaired - oh, and wait at least a week); or I could pay to insure it and send it back to Brother at my OWN EXPENSE.After hours of this nonsense (trying to get a non-working new printer to work) and dealing with non-English speaking individuals who don't understand the nuances of the English language, I'm perturbed and will NEVER recommend or purchase a Brother product again. I will find someone who can give me a credit card so this can be exchanged and be done with it; but will spread the word that this company is awful to do business with - and that this product should be avoided at all costs. Hopefully the replacement works; I'll update this later if it does not.I purchased one other Brother printer this year - through Amazon, and had to send it back as it also have untold errors. Does Mickey Mouse put these things together? Is there a number less than ZERO I could give this manufacturer and product? Sure wish there was!

They replaced my new machine with a refurbished machine that is working even worse. Constantly pausing and needed to be restarted. Now, I am moving on and going to a new product. The best case scenario is I get a refurb machine that still is still tough to use and prints poorly. No thanks.

My lord is this thing huge! Could easily be 50-70% lighter and we would all save money. Clearly an old office copier/fax design given some no brainer e-feature makeovers for the 21st century. Slower even than the featherweight HPs. And have never seen a ups cable connection buried so deeply inside any machine tho moot point for wifi.Got it because will be using for my engineering work so that I can print 'B' size [11x17] drawings for review then scan them in with my color markup copies and email to my customers. Simply no other competitor anywhere near with all the features I wanted [11x17 print and flat bed scan/copy] in this price range. Have not used fax for years so this feature rich function is of no interest to me especially as I do not have a land line and cannot fax over Skype ... yet [jist yew wayeit 'enry 'iggins, jist yew wayeit].Found setup to proceed quickly even the wifi part - just need to tay aptenshion!Plenty of warnings in the manual to not turn off the machine as it wastes ink! Actually, only way to 'unpower' it is to unplug it as when off still draws nearly 1 amp.Strange comment at the bottom of manual pg 156 [1st page discussing error and maintenance messages] that if it is set to print on certain types of paper in B&W print mode not only will it stop all print operations if ink gets low you cannot use the machine until you change to a new ink cartridge if you have either turned the machine off or removed the cartridge. Not a bidniz friendly feature. One of the added benefits this machine offers is reasonably priced ink refills tho I have been in the habit of refilling my own HP ink cartridges due to their usurious retail prices so will probably give these a home refill try, too.BTW got this new for just over $210 with no shipping! Now listing for over $370! Had been planning on getting the prior non-wifi model used for mid-$100s when this popped up.

I'd give it zero stars if I could.Besides the fact that the scanning software is clunky, you can't print in black & white on this thing unless all the color cartridges are full. You have to keep it supplied with expensive color cartridges in order to print in black & white. What a rip-off. I bought this printer to replace my 9-year old all-in-one device because I am tired or paying as much as the printer costs for a color ink cartridge. I love the fact that this printer uses separate cartridges. I already have one of these on my desk at work, and that sealed my decision to buy it for home. HP and Brother are the names to go with when printing text (which I do a lot). The text is crisp, with no detectable "fuzzies" around the characters. I chose the Brother printer because over my many years of purchasing HP printers, the software has become so bloated that I often have difficulty installing it. There is no excuse for that. The Brother software takes a little while to install (about 20 minutes on my Windows 7 machine), but it's easy to use and light on my system. The ink cartridges are very easy to get in and out. And of course, the networking feature is just icing on the cake for me. Plug it into the router, and instant access across my house.I have two downers on this printer:1. The paper tray is enclosed. Not only does this mean that it HAS to be removed to fill, but I can't tell how much paper remains in the tray just by looking at it. Good thing it beeps (and beeps and beeps) when it runs out of paper (or ink for that matter.2. When the printer decides it's out of ink, it stops working - completely. All of my past HP printers would bark at me saying the ink was low or out, but would keep right on printing, so I could look at the page and decide if it was time to change the cartridge. The Brother printers disable all features (including scanning) when THE PRINTER says it's out of ink, even if a small amount remains. This means that if I don't have a cartridge on hand, the printer is a sitting duck until I do.Overall thoughts: Excellent printer. Prints quickly, at a very high quality, and is easy to use. I don't think the photo printing is bad (good enough quality on regular paper), but I have a photo printer that I use when I want a nice photo (on photo paper), which is why my other HP printer remains.

the Brother printer drivers for Linux do not properly handle tray selection. The 'autotray' setting in the menu on the printer is apparently useless, and the driver pulls from Tray 1 no matter what I do. As the drivers are key to a properly working printer, I docked two stars for that.Other than that, it's a great printer for general engineering drawing use. Unlike the Epson which I used previously for 11x17 printing, the Brother has not clogged once in the year I've had it. Don't buy it as a photo printer--you'll be disappointed. For general technical documents it does a fine job.

I Live outside the USA and had this delivered to a Friend and collected on a recent trip. It is a quite large machine so forget about it going in a suitcase. Set up was a breeze and im so thrilled to finally have a large format printer in my office. Photo copying is a breeze and of course teh ability to Scan legal size paper too. all this has Has saved the money i spent in no time. Only problem is i keep having to re install the device on my computer. It doesnt happen with everyone else on the network so i figure its some thing with my mobility and disconnecting and re connecting with the network. Other than that I an very satisfied with it.

I bought this printer to use for home office use printing 11x17 CAD drawings. I've been using it now for about 6 months and I'm totall impressed with it. Prints quick, scanner works great. I haven't had any trouble with the scanning software like a few others have had. My favorite part is the separate ink tanks that will allow me to replace only what needs it. Another really important feature for me is the separate paper trays. There are several other 11x17 printers on the market but they have only 1 paper tray. This one allows you to load 8.5x11 and 11x17 at the same time and choose when printing. Very important option. WIFI setup was a breeze. If you need a printer that will do 11x17, this is a great option. Very happy with this printer.UPDATE: I'm a year and a half into owning this printer and use it on a daily basis doing engineering work from my home office. Still works great, still scans great. I'm definitely glad I made the jump away from HP printers. The ink is more reasonable and the quality of the printer is excellent.

I've had the DCP-8085DN for a couple of days. I'm very pleased with the performance. My only disappointment is with the multipurpose tray which I had anticipated using for envelopes. The multipurpose tray is described has having a capacity of 50 sheets--in use you learn that this is the capacity for plain paper--it only will accept about 3 envelopes. Using the multipurpose tray is also a bit of a hassle--rear & front doors must be lowered while in use. I considered buying the optional 2nd tray for use with envelopes; then discovered in the manual these words, "envelopes can only be fed from the multipurpose tray." By the way, the one #10 envelope that I tried printing, crinkled severely. Otherwise I am more than pleased.

This machine was a huge disappointment. The scanner performed nicely and I had no issues with the software. The printer, however, was slow and a major ink hog. I spent $40+ on new genuine Brother ink cartridges. Within 1 month, half the ink was gone. I only printed just a few pages. One morning it wouldn't print anything at all (when I needed it the most). It just spit out blank pages (although you could hear it trying to print). It took over 10 consequetive cleaning cycles and print page tests just to get it to print correctly again. By that time, nearly half the ink was gone! Every few nights, it would perform cleaning cycles on its own, waking me up at times. I never had any other problems, but I didn't use it much either. I never used the fax feature so I can't comment on that. I decided to sell it cheap before it crapped out (which is inevitable, based on all the many bad reviews I've read about print head failures and black ink refusing to work).Pros:Attractive looking; small footprint.Nice LCD screen with a menu system that allows for easy configuration.Has all the features a wireless all-in-one machine should have.Wireless performance (at least on my network) was great.Scanner works great. I scanned close to 1000 documents without a problem.Quiet printing.Cons:Printing is slow.Ink consumption is outrageous. Will bug you like crazy when ink is low or empty.Requires continuous daily use and/or cleanings to prevent print head from not printing correctly.See other reviews online for many more :(Tip: if the printer insists you're 'out of ink' but you know there's some left, simply cover the little clear plastic window on the front of the ink cartridge with a black marker. The printer visually detects how much ink is left by 'looking' into that window. (It's a flawed design.) Doing this allowed me to print more color photos even though I was supposedly out of ink.

This would be better if it were just a scanner/fax/phone (fax works with Vonage). I would give it 5 stars for that, but as a printer, it's horrible if you want good quality. Photos looks like they are printed from a retail kiosk that uses thermal paper (yes, even on the highest quality photo setting with the test photo paper that came with it). Not up to par for an inkjet. It should really just be advertised a fax/phone/scanner/basic copier (and priced accordingly), not as something that can print quality graphics.

What irritates me is that the unit cleans itself by using ink, of every color. If you want to fax something: REFILL CYAN. Just when you want to print a b&w postage code: REFILL BLUE. Why do you need to REFILL BLUE for a black & white document, with the printer properties set to grayscale or black & white? The color cartridges are half the size of the black cart. So, even if you rarely print color, just when you need to run a copy for school: REFILL YELLOW.I wanted to go back to Epson, since our old color printer didn't have this problem. But ALL MANUFACTURERS DO IT NOW! So check ink cartridge size and prices on whatever you're looking at. Ink prices will have a heavier weight on your wallet than the machine price.

I have been very pleased with this one. It has done everything I needed and done it well. After one year I finally had to replace an ink cartridge (yellow of all colors!) and that couldn't have been easier. Does photo printing that satisfies my needs (and I believe would satisfy most others as well). Love that 11x17 scanning deck. Though there are those with complaints, I've been completely satisfied and can easily recommend it. Love having a large scanner and the ability to print on tabloid size paper.

My ink cost lowered from $90 a month to $15 every 3!! months with MFC-5490CN, if you dont take your time to load faxes and scans itll get sideways but other than that I have no problems!Great product for low cost, this one was 130 something after shipping.

I like the new star rating system, however there is no way to put N/A. I rated noise and print quality as 5 stars. Noise is something I could care less about, so I would have put N/A. I don't know how much noise a device like this is supposed to put out, although it is no more noisy to me than any printer or scanner I have ever had. As far as print quality, I don't use this printer to print pictures(my primary rating of print quality) as I have other printers for that, but the text looks fine so I rated this 5 stars as well.Overall, this piece of equipment has to be one of the most well designed and easiest to setup and use of any computer peripheral I have ever had.Really, It couldn't be simpler. Setup was a breeze, use is a breeze, one touch use buttons on the front makes it easy for non-computer people(like my wife) to use, etc. There are only two minor gripes I would have about this "all in one"One, the wireless is awesome and was easy to setup. It works flawlessly for printing via my wife's Macbook, however after initial setup for my Vista Based HP computer, I lost the ability for the computer to find the printer and print to it. Scans to my computer work perfectly though. Go figure, a difficulty with Microsoft, HOW UNLIKELY IS THAT?Two, although most people have no problem faxing to this machine, on one occasion a person said they tried to send me a fax and I never received it. I think it might have been an issue on their end as after that I did some tests, and couldn't find a problem with it at all.Scan:When you want to scan, you put the document in either the ADF and you get a message saying "ADF Ready" and you hit scan. It gives you four options for scanning and which of our two computers to send the document to. simple.Copy:Copying is a two button process from the front. Either load the ADF or open up the flat bed and place the document in it, and press copy. It works just like any Copy machine I have used at work, and is more simple.Print:Printing is a breeze, except for that minor issue with my Vista Machine. I would bet that is a Microsoft issue and not a Brother issue. I think I have read something about I need to set up my computer to have a permanent IP address or something. My internet works fine, so I don't want to mess with it. Besides, I might be willing to do this if my wife's Mac didn't work flawlessly.Fax:Besides that ghost issue I have mentioned above, it works perfectly.Summary:I really like this "All in One" and would highly recommend it based on my experience. This has been a winner for me.

Issues with WLAN connections occurred regularly. I used WPA, WPA2, WEP . . . in all cases, connections were intermittent. After going through tech support, it was resolved by resetting the factory network settings and starting over. I noticed that this has to be done after each power outage in this case.Large paper drawer and feed poorly designed - jammed regularly, thus eventually stopped using it altogether. After calling tech support, unable to resolve. They sent suggestions on finding scrap paper in the feeds and cleaning, but none of this worked.Document feeder on top quite often grabs more than one page. I need to hold the paper to make sure this doesn't happen, which means I have to stay at the printer while I use this feature - defeating the purpose. Cleaning did not help.I would not buy this brand again as it's the second Brother printer I've had with similar dissatisfaction.

Also till now it has never had any issue with paper getting struck.

When I called tech support because I couldn't get the machine to close again (just takes force) I was told that was a software issue (!)

I haven't even opened the box on my new purchase yet, but that is because I own the exact same model and it is still working, though I believe I purchased it about 5 years ago. I like it so much that I bought a spare for when and if this one quits working. It is the most user friendly printer I have ever had. I no longer have a fax line in my home, so I don't use that part of it anymore, but I am a realtor and I scan and send contracts and related documents daily and it is always reliable. It is the only printer I have ever had that the roller has not needed to be replaced. I use quality copy paper and very seldom have it pull multiple papers through. So, there you have it. A review of the item, even though I have not opened the carton! Great Product and I am able to purchase compatable ink cartridges very inexpensively on the internet. So simple to change the cartridges too!

Brother took my money and the only thing I got was a valuable lesson. Had to return MFC once because the scanner stopped working. Now it has just turned into a black hole for money, ink, and time. The entire machine stops working if it THINKS one printer color is empty. (Sometimes it thinks that and it is wrong)I will never, EVER buy another Brother product. I can't wait to throw this thing in the garbage and get some satisfaction for what I have invested.

I so wish I could've seen into the future when I bought this. I got the printer when it first came out. I haven't had the ink hog problems of some people, but I am lucky to get a single page out before it jams. Again. I've probably pulled out three "jammed" pages for every printed--not that there's any actual evidence of a jam, mind you. When you crack open the cover, everything appears to have fed fine. Or, there's no paper there at all to have jammed. This thing once reported a jam when it was actually out of paper. And when it says to open the back cover to clear the jam, that really isn't sufficient. I have to open the main cover and put it back down.If the dang thing would actually print, I'd like it. I had no problems with the setup or connectivity, even when I changed routers. The quality and scanning are sufficient for what I need, but with this operational difficulty, Brother lost a customer, much the same way HP did with my experiences on their printers.

I bought this printer to replace an HP AIO (PSC1600) after the scanner stopped working (which also killed the copy function). At first, I was hesitant to get the Brother because its not a brand I usually associate with good quality printing or graphics. (Like HP or Canon). But I am very glad I got this printer - have had it for about a month now. The look and feel of it is very solid - it feels like quality- not like the plasticy HPs I've had. Takes up less space than my HPs did, and the only wire is the power cord. (It's connected wirelessly to my 802.11n network router, and I can print wirelessly from 2 Wifi laptops.)It easily connected wirelessly to both my PC(XP) and Mac(Leopard). Even using WPA security and Symantec client firewall on the home network, it just worked right out of the box. Not a lot of fussing. To get the printer to show up "ready" on my PC, I specified "permit always" on my Symantec Firewall for 4 Brother apps: Brother Status Monitor, BRAdmin, Control Center3, and Brother Remote Setup app. The firewall automatically prompted me for 3 of these permissions, but not Brother Status Monitor, which I specified manually. (If you don't set that permission for Brother Status Monitor in your firewall, the printer status will show offline on the PC even though you can print to it.)I also manually set the IP address of the printer (given by a printout of the device settings), in Windows (Printer Properties->Port->Configure TCPIP port-> set IP address). Mac/Airport did not require this extra step. The feature I like about it most is that it powers itself down into a sleep mode after use, and wakes up when you send it a print, or initiate a scan or copy from the PC or Mac. Very energy savvy. And it is VERY quiet compared to my past HP printers. No more HP-klinketey klunk every time I [manually] powered them up. The Brother wakes up silently, automatically, and just immediately starts printing.Initiating functions like fax from PC is almost too easy- I sent a MSFT Word document directly to a fax number, from Word, without touching the Brother software or device controls. Once this printer is installed, moving digital images to and from the printer is easy.As far as print quality- I was a little dismayed initially by the first color prints I sent it, UNTIL I realized that there are numerous print settings you can make to switch between: 1.Fast, 2.Fast Normal, 3.Normal, and 4.Fine on Plain Paper... or... 5.Fine, 6.Photo or 7.Highest on Photo paper. That's 7 separate quality selections. There are also 2 print options for "Natural" or "Vivid" colors.Ink usage is very good- especially if you use the appropriate quality setting (I print a lot of plain paper color pages, just for reading.) I have printed probably 75 pages and the starter ink hasn't taken a dent yet. One of the nice software features is that you can see the ink levels from the printer control application, from both your PC and Mac. Another nice design feature in this printer is the ink access-- very easy, from a little access door in the front- you don't have to lift the scanner or top to get to it like other printers. 4 Ink cartridges make it efficient to run- only replace what you need (Black, Yellow, Magenta, Cyan). They are much easier to load than my HPs Vivera inks were. And Brother's LC61 inks are less expensive.Overall, a very sophisticated AIO (Wifi, Ethernet, Pictbridge, USB, ADF, support for multiple save formats like tiff, pdf, bmp, jpg, etc) and very well built printer for a very low price (paid $129 for mine). While its not equivalent to a topline scanner (1200 dpi vs 4800dpi) the scans I have done come out very clear and accurate. Photocapture can capture up to whatever the resolution is of your camera, from flash card, USB or PictBridge, and save it as jpg, bmp, tiff, or pdf. Pretty awesome.

Just FYI the ink magically disappears from this printer... I have switched to only printing in black and white with my MFC-255CW. I replaced all of my ink cartridges 46 days ago, because even to print in black and white it requires that I have ink in ALL cartridges. One other note is that if you take the ink cartridge out and put it back in it will say that it's empty. I found that out after accidentally ejecting a cartridge that was not even low when I was changing the other cartridges and the printer said it was gone after I put it back it. That was upsetting, so I bought another printer (which I LOVE!) and have only been using the MFC255-CW for scanning purposes. The settings on my computer are to just print in black and white as well. So without using any magenta ink it has evaporated into thin air and now I can't even scan without buying another magenta ink cartridge. For that ink cartridge to last barely a month and to have printed at most 10 pages not even using any color ink is ridiculous! I wouldn't wish this printer on anyone! As soon as I can afford to buy a scanner I'm going to pull an "Office Space" on this printer, because I would feel guilty selling this to someone or even giving it to the Salvation Army. One last thing I wasn't impressed with the print quality for photos. We messed around with it and couldn't get the print quality to be any better than paying (what amounts to the fraction of the cost I have spent in time and money messing with this printer) to just have someone else print nice photos for me.

I went online looking for a printer that would handle 11x17 stock for brochures, folders and book signatures...WOW! I thought OK cheap and easy - well we will see. The printer/scanner/copier/mass-storage camera card reader I could go on and on! I scan to file from the printer! I print borderless picture perfect images in a variety of sizes up to 11"x17" (ledger) size, and it is still on the original ink after a ton of experiments and research work!!! Yes the ink is economical and the printer unit as a whole is fantastic... next I want to finally set up the fax... I have never used it before so may have to edit this later, but fax or not everything else is worth the meager amount I paid for it and it outperforms every printer of any brand other than Brother that I have ever experienced including the original Xerox printshop models I operated!!! way back when... just get one already! You won't be sorry. I sure am not!
