We have had this for seven months now and use it every day. We scan, print, fax, copy, photo use, and use different sizes. Every feature is substantial and useful. Great print quality and no skipping. Very easy to use and great fax options. I love that I can pring 11x17 documents. A big reason for buying. The only thing is that the print cartriges are expensive!

If you're printing 11x17 text heavy, the 850 pages is a laugh, only it's not funny having to buy more and more ink.Color is good running directly from the computer to the copier, but I'm not doing professional work, either. I just needed the copies to look decent. It did get me out of a jam (and I've returned the favor a few times) when I needed some 11x17 copying in a hurry.

Every once in a while, it has to do a self cleaning which takes about 2 minutes. It really is annoying. Once it is ready to go, it does print fairly fast. I like the features of this printer except for the auto self cleaning. Which I could turn that feature off.

Great all-in-one for basic all around usage but I us it mostly for faxing to email. I had an original Brothers thermal fax machine in the 80's and worked great that is why I went back to brothers again. I made the aweful mistake of trying an HP all-in-one and it was horrible. The feeder would grab multiple pages and had to end up feeding them in one by one the worst thing of all was due to only using the machine rarely for ink the cartrige would expire even though they were full and was forced to buy new ink AND other parts to make it work. I returned for a Brothers machine which I am extremely happy with.

I bought this printer last September and I used it as follows:- 3 to 4 scans- printing 20-30 pages (colored)- maybe two to three copying task (each of one page)- faxing domestically for one single time (one page)After just these little tasks, the printer stopped working. It asks for ink replacement every time I switch it on. I bought new ink cartages and when I replaced them, the printer still didn't recognize them and still asked me for replacing the ink. It's just a horrible printer. Didn't work for more than few times (2 months total). I recommend you not buying this machine. Go for hp.Hope this helps!

As others have mentioned, this printer has a lousy ink system. The printer is constantly going through cleaning cycles, even when turned off! These cleaning cycles waste all of your ink in no time. This printer goes through more ink than any other printer I have ever had. I tried updating the firmware on the printer to the latest that is out there on the Brother webpage, but that did not help. I called Brother Tech Support numerous times, and each person I spoke with said there was no way to turn off or modify the cleaning settings. So, you go through a ton of ink, for no good reason. You will replace color cartridges, even if you don't print in color. What a joke!

After some bad luck with a high end Epson, I decided to switch gears and try an under-dog. I also wanted to add wireless printing and not be too expensive. The fax feature on this machine was not a reason for purchasing, but I've used it once or twice. My favorite features are by far the wireless and the print options. I am a 'laptopper' so being able to print from the couch rather than going upstairs and plugging stuff in was a big deal. It was also VERY east to set up.This model also has a bunch of print quality options letting you decide just how much ink (and where) you want to use in each print job. A+ on both features. It is a big printer (so be prepared), but not too much bigger than its peers with the same features. It does have a much larger (and great looking) touch screen, and a phone sticking out the side, so I am willing to look past the size. The reason I am coming back and writting this review is that it just broke on me...I bought it in March & it worked fine until a few weeks ago, when it stopped printing black. I was on the ORIGINAL ink, but it was starting to get low at that point (according to the printer) so I thought maybe it just mis-gauged the level, and I bought some new ink. After putting the new ink in (genuine Brother ink) it still wouldn't print out any black. I followed the troubleshooting in the manual (and cleaned the print heads 5 times (per the manual!)) and still had no luck.I called Brother Tech Support (WHO ARE STILL IN THE USA!!!) pretty late at night expecting them to be closed, and they are actually there until 8pm! I was shocked! The guy who helped me apologized, said I'm still in warranty (1 year) and is sending a new (not refurb) machine out to me, with pre-paid shipping to return my dud. They are doing a $50 CC hold (certainly reasonable) and once they get it back its removed. It even comes with new ink.Overall I have to say that I was very happy with my printer until it broke, and now that Brother is taking care of it I am still very happy with my purchase. I will certainly be looking at Brother products in the future because there attitude/cust service has been miles better than Epsons!

I love this MFC but I do NOT love the fact that when set up using wifi I have to constantly delete and reinstall the printer to get it to work. It might print fine on PC A but PC B won't so I delete and reinstall on PC B but that breaks PC A. It's not logical at all.I finally just hooked it up to a LAN cable connection to the wifi router. Now I want to scan documents and the MFC Control Center isn't connecting or finding the printer.Update 5/23/11: Had to send it in for repairs in Feb due to it thinking the ink cover was constantly open.

Two things I like about this printer. When I got it I had mac os10.4.11 and it was one of the few printers that worked with that system, even though on the box many printers say they work with it.Next, even though they don't tell you, and I had a hard time getting it out of the support line rep, you can operate this printer without changing the color cartridges. You have to go to advanced settings and choose gray scale to make it work. you may have to do this every time you print.I had to stay on hold waiting for a customer service rep for 15 minutes because after I changed my black ink, I could not get the printer to work. It took two calls and various shut offs and turn ons. You know, the high tech method! All in all, it works just fine. I have not printed much in color, so no comment there.

I read many of the Amazon reviews here and everyone seems to like this Brothers WiFi Network Printer pretty well, so I went looking for a place to buy one. I saw in one of the reviews that someone got one for $79, but I searched both online & off and couldn't find one anywhere for less than $100. I then got a sales flier from Best Buy in the mail and went and bought their last one in stock for $99.I brought it home, opened it, pulled off all the packing crap, plugged in the power, connect the cat5 cable to my router, and it said install the ink, so I did. Next I popped in the cdrom and installed just the printer driver... that's it. Then I went to my desktop and opened a browser and selected print preview in the browsers menu and then told it to print to the Brothers printer and BAM!! within seconds.. 2 colored pages were printed.Next I went to my WiFi Laptop, installed the driver from the cdrom, and opened a browser and BAM!! same results.. I got wifi printing without any hassles... this is great.I read in someones review here, that this wasn't possible, getting both cat5 wired and WiFi printing out of this machine... but it works for me. I never connected a USB cable to it at all..I run 1 desktop cable connected computer (cat5 to the router) & 1 laptop wifi connected computer (to my wifi router - same router in both cases). Both are winXP pro O/S..I was currently using an Epson CX8400 and it's a great printer for its time. But since I now have a wifi laptop I wanted wifi, and well... the epson just got disconnected and put on ebay to regain some of the cost I just paid for this one. Also I've been hating how massively huge many peripheral makers... addon software.. has been getting. They are huge and sometimes they literally take hours to install. Then they bog down the performance of your machine and are slow to open up. HP is terrible at this, probably the worst (they used to be the best) but I will not buy an HP product anymore! Epson has always been pretty good, quick to install & very reliable, and they were my choice over the past 5 years. This is my 3rd Brothers product, but the other 2 were fax machines. This Brothers All-in-One machine was a breeze to install and get results from. Not only that the refill ink is very reasonibly priced AND... there are NO smart (electronic) chips on the ink cartridges. So you can refill them or buy cheaper 3rd party ink... HURRAY!I love that I can just leave the machine turned on 27/7 and that it will go into a sleeper energy power savings mode. If you left a USB printer plugged in, and did a restart or new start-up on your computer, it wouldn't start unless you turned the power off 1st (just another hassle).I really haven't fully checked the print quality for photos & it may not be quite as good as a REAL (high priced) photo printer.... For the price of this machine you really cannot complain with it's hassle free operations!anyways I'm a very happy camper with this product, and I've only started with the printer option, I still have the scanner, fax, copier, and more, to play with... :)

So far so good. Absolutely no paper jams for the past year of use. Very good quality for black prints. Color printing on the other hand, is very dull. Even the black comes out looking gray.Positive:* Quick and easy setup. Software included does quick and simple scanning.* Print time is decent for both color and black* Very sturdy construction* 4 separate print cartridges* Printer cleans itself* Auto feeder for copying multiple pages. (very useful while filing tax documents and making copies of it.)* Also, has an open door option for manual feed scanning.Negative:* Black prints comes out looking dark gray. Not as rich as it should be.* No USB cable provided (Like selling a car with no steering wheel)* Printer uses INK to clean itself. 2-3 times a month. Even when the printer is OFF. ???* Color photo prints on regular paper comes out dull. Very dull. haven't tried printing on photo paper yet.* No envelope feed option on the paper tray. Very confusing at first, but after 2 attempts, I eventually figured it out.* No WIFI connectionI still gave it a 4 because the majority of prints I do are black and white prints. (resumes, school work, labels, etc"). For Less than $100, you can't complain. Replacement cartrdiges are also very affordable. For Photo printing, LOOK ELSEWHERE!----------------UPDATE:After using the inks until they were near empty, the colors seem to be more brighter for some reason and the blacks now looks black. I guess it needs some breaking in time? Also, Printer will warn you that the cartridge are empty and must be replaced, even though there is a good amount of ink left. Enough for 30-50 more normal prints I would say. You can trick the printer into using it again just by removing the cartridge and reinserting them.Looks like the printer is set to a certain amount of prints for each cartridge and just tells you to replace a cartridge after a certain amount of prints. It doesn't actually know when the cartridges are empty. There is a small window on the cartridges to let you see how much ink is left.----------------UPDATE 7/27/10After updating the firmware from the Brothers site, you can now continue to print in (black only) if a color cartridge is empty. Before the update, if any of the color cartridges were empty, the printer would demand that you replace the color cartridge and would not allow you to print at all. Not even in black.----------------UPDATE 2/25/2013The prints seems to be blurry and very poor now. Not sure if it's because I'm using 3rd party ink or because it's just getting old. What also annoying is that the printer is slow to start. Especially if you unplug it and plug it back in. It will start to "clean itself" So that fast copying or printing you need will end up taking 15 minutes. Of course, you are only affected by this if you unplug the printer.I'm now getting paper jam here and there. Looks like it's time for an upgrade.

This printer is a piece of junk! As others have stated---literally eats ink by the gallons. Had mine for about 6 months now and we print AT MOST 12 pages a WEEK, yet we are on our 3rd set of all colors of cartridges. Also a new recent development is that if you don't print a document every 2-3 days---the black gums up and won't print. You have to go through a lengthy, noisy (and paper and ink consuming) self clean to get it straightened out. We've only used OEM cartridges on the black-so cheapo cartridges aren't the cause.Never again Brother anything for me. Thankfully I only paid $59 at Best Buy for this ---but that was $59 too much as this thing is worthless!

I wish I could get my hands around the neck of whoever decided to start the practice of NOT including a USB cable with the USB device you buy! You get everything out of the box, make a mess all over the floor, spend an hour setting up the printer, then when the instructions say "plug in the USB cable" you discover they DIDN'T GIVE YOU A STINKING USB CABLE!!. You have to get up, get in the car, drive 15 miles to the local computer shop, buy a stinking USB cable, drive 15 miles back home (you've just wasted an hour and a half of your day), and then you can continue following the instructions and setting up the printer. What a pain in the butt!

This all-in-one is quite difficult to use.First, there's the set up for the wireless printing: It was so confusing and the manual did so little to help that we had to call the customer service. They helped, but it took quite an unreasonable long time... don't know how busier people can ever handle it.Second, there's this weird "cleaning" system that suddenly starts from time to time when you want to print something. It makes this weird noise that's just so annoying and time-consuming. Not sure what that's for. Then there's the copy quality: I tried printing a page off a book and the writings on it were quite clear, and all I wanted was a black and white copy, but the copied result was a disaster... can vaguely see that there were words on it....

I purchased this machine so I could produce newsletters on ledger paper and while I was up, running and had an issue printed in about 30-minutes, the results were disappointing. I'd printed the newsletter on my HP 6500 AIO and the color rendition between the two machines is dramatic; the Brother is faded and one-dimensional while the HP is true and eye-popping. I'll tweak the colors and hope for some added richness, but sure wish HP had a ledger printer that would fit inside my cabinet because no other printer produces the same quality. The Brother machine is a good $$$ value, but I'll keep the HP close by for photos and other projects where color is a must.

As others have said, this is a good machine. I run a small engineering company and needed to scan and print color 11x17s. There are some significant limitations which Brother overlooked, and I'll share those Ive found with you. I gave it 4 stars because, even with its limitations, there is nothing with the big scan capability out there, and for many things it does a good job:1. You can't scan a full size sheet - it will only scan a normal "printable" area. That means that if you have anything full-bleed to scan, or have details which bleed into a 1/6-1/4" margin, it won't scan. You can fool the scanner on smaller sizes, but on an 11x17, you simply can't scan the edges of the sheet. It doesn't appear to be a hardware limitation - the twain driver automatically sets the margins based on your "scan size". BTW - this is a critical flaw in the machine if you want to scan 4x6 prints - who wants the scanner to crop your images down, or for you to jerryrig the machine to offset the print from the corner of the glass, then scan a 4-1/3x6-1/3 area, then have to bring the photo into editing software to recrop (or to have to manually set the crop area on each scan in the Twain driver?). Yuk.2. If you scan from the ADF to the computer, you cannot let it auto-select the scan size. If you've ever had a mixed document (letter+ledger, as if often with engineering reports), you have to scan the two sizes separately. This is also a software limitation because if you choose to scan to FTP from the ADF, it will scan letter as letter, and ledger and ledger, and put them all in a nice single PDF for you3. When scanning to FTP, you can scan at several resolutions of color (300,600,...), but when scanning to B&W, you can only scan at 100 or 200dpi. What genius figured you would never need to scan B&W at higher than a fax resolution? Anyone who archives their physical files will want at least 300dpi, and preferably 400 (G4 fax) or 600dpi. Sadly, there are no cheap/free packages to downsample pdfs to 1 bit.4. The ADF sucks. There it is. I've been through two machines thinking it might be a faulty pick-up roller. Nope, even with fresh, unused copier paper it will want to take an occasional double sheet. Again, if you're archiving papers, you don't want to find 4 or 5 sheets in a 50 page document missing. You have to babysit the machine and hold the stack, letting it feed just one sheet. Again, this isn't just with comb bound papers or previously stapled or dogeared ones, this is with freshly printed and even completely unprinted, good quality 20lb copier paper. With the exception of #4, the shortcomings are all software/firmware limitations, but with Brother's reputation I wouldn't expect any updates to this machine. Honestly, at this price point Brother could put a serious hurt on Xerox and HP document management systems for small businesses, but not until they correct their significant lack of foresight in the scanning option arena.

I bought this printer in February 2009 because I needed a printer and wanted a wireless one. I think this was a very good choice, but it has a few draw backs:Pros:-Connected to my wireless network very easily-Stays connected with very few breaks in connection-Prints very quickly and starts up quickly-Photos come out nicely-Can print on paper up to legal size (8.5x11)-Able to print last page first-Easy setup/easy to change setup w/ menu button-Instructions easy to follow w/ pictures-Works with Vista (and Macs according to the paperwork)-EnergyStar-Prints/Scans/Copies-Fax machine also-Has seperate ink for black/color-Ink prices not very expensiveCons:-Ink may not last very long--I print an average of 30 pages per month and it says "low ink" now. It's September 09 (so 7 months later) and I may need to change the ink soon, although it is the trial ink it came with and it usually doesn't last as long as regular ink.-No double sided printing option-Not the quietest printer, (or the loudest) but since it is wireless, you can put it anywhere-It did lose connection when I changed internet providers/types and I emailed customer service. They were very prompt in response (next day) and gave me tips to reconnect since nothing I was doing was working. Eventually, the printer got reconnected and has not broken since.I haven't used the fax option since I cancelled my home phone shortly after purchasing this printer. It does have a card reader and scanner so you can print photos easily. The display (which has changeable wallpapers) is pretty nice and adjusts angles. I also like the paper tray. The printer also has a wired option incase you need to plug it into a desktop and still want to use it with a laptop. The software is nice, but I don't really use it so I can't tell you if it is good or bad. Once you setup the printer, it is pretty easy to change settings back and forth with the Menu button. It's pretty self explainatory. Is this the best wireless printer? Probably not, but it is worth the price. It looks great and works great. I would recommend buying it. It isn't too large so it won't take up a lot of desk space, which is nice.

This printer is easy to set up and has a lot of features. When it works, it's great, but I've had this printer for less than a year and it's already having printing problems. Judging by the forums I've read online, this is a common problem. This is one of those printers where if one ink color is out you can't print AT ALL. The ink is pretty inexpensive to replace, but it also doesn't last long...so count on changing ink frequently. I JUST changed the ink, but it's already having issues printing. The black is faded on about 1 out of every 3 print outs. Today I received a fax and I couldn't tell what the fax said or who it was from! I just hope it wasn't important! Cleaning the printer heads will normally fix the printer issue temporarily, but I still find myself having to clean them daily and it STILL only prints correctly some of the time. From what I've read, these printers only last 24-36 months at max, so if you buy it, be sure to purchase the extended warranty...that way you'll get a new machine from Brother when it breaks. Also, be aware that if you use replacement ink from a manufacturer other than Brother, it will void the warranty.Update:I changed the review from 2 to 3 stars because the printers ink problems worked themselves out and it's been printing fine for the last few weeks. I also found out that the machine has a "fax to PC" option where every fax can also come in on your PC...that's certainly handy when the ink's not working.

It was time for an upgrade and I was excited by the wireless capabilities of this model. However, after several attempts, I have yet to be able to connect to my home wireless internet through this machine. This is quite disappointing. There have been other issues in terms of speed of printing. I think it is still okay as a fax machine, but I was really trying to get away from having a printer and a fax machine. This so-called all-in-one is not making the grade.

If I was a shareholder in this company, I would sell out immediately. As a former owner of an HP colour inkjet, I know their marketing strategy was sell cheap printer, sell expensive ink. Since I don't print that much, my total cost of ownership was manageable. In return I had a reliable printer that would continue to print irrespective of ink levels. Brother however, is another matter entirely.I agree with the sentiments expressed by all the less favaourable comments already posted with regards to ink usage. This machine regularly cleans its ink heads automatically and runs down your ink levels even if you only print a little (My old HP only cleaned ink head on request). Now I do not mind if I have to pay for stuff that I use. I am offended however, for having to pay for something I did not use (ink) and also am offended that there should exist a printer that, in this modern day and age, has less printer functionality than my older printer. One would have thought (silly me) that the ability to print with one or even MORE cartridges empty would be a standard! While I disliked HP due to cost (loved functionality), I HATE Brother (hate cost, hate functionality). I want to throw it away even though it is working properly by Brother standards. If I had only bought a defective machine, I wouldn't be so mad - these things happen. Might have still been willing to try another model. However, the way these machines work to consume ink is deliberate and insidious.Business strategists advise that it is a heavy investment to obtain new customers. It is less costly to retain old ones. If brother continues with this ink usage strategy in its machines, the only way it is going to survive is by attracting a constant supply of new customers since there is no way on earth I am ever going to buy another brother and am sure that same holds true for many here.

So, I usually don't do reviews but I thought this one was worth it. Maybe it will save someone the hours I spent trying to set this thing up. Before ordering, I did my research like most people. I found mostly positive reviews and a few negative ones that concerned me. Seemed more than a few had trouble getting this thing set up. I decided to try it and upon arrival I was excited by the look, function and features. Then came the installation. Let me say that although I am far from a computer guru, I am fairly competent with them as well. I have a desktop running Windows XP with a wireless router that I use for my laptop running Vista. The main reason I purchased this printer was to be able to print via WiFi from my laptop. However, for whatever reason, the only way I could get my desktop computer to recognize the printer as "online" was to install it with the USB cable. Believe me I tried everything. To make matters worse I could not get the laptop to work at all via WiFi. Finally as a last ditch effort to install the printer on the laptop, instead of using the CD for installation, I went through Windows and had it locate and install the printer with the add printer link from the Control Panel (I had no trouble getting the printer to find my wireless home network.) After that the laptop worked like a charm. On to the desktop. I could never get the desktop to connect using either the wireless or the ethernet connection. Finally I crossed my fingers and installed it again using the CD and USB cable. To my surprise and delight it worked and I could print from both the desktop using the USB and my laptop via WiFi without changing any settings. The manual said this was not possible but I am assuming they meant with a single machine?? Anyway, I give brother 1 star for ease of use and their installation instructions but I am very satisfied with the overall product, provided it lasts. Only time will tell if it will be worth the 7 or so hours I put in to getting it to work properly. Hopefully this will save a few the pain I endured.

Frequently thinks cartridges are out of ink or missing when they're not. I wasted a lot of money on cartridges before giving up. For example, I just replaced the black cartridge, and then it said the yellow cartridge was missing even though I didn't touch the yellow.Configuration is not for amateurs; requires some manual configuration of computer names and IP addresses for some features to work, and you may have problems if the computer is on WiFi and the printer is on Ethernet.

I beg you not to spend any of your money on this, or any other, Brother product. If you like being frustrated then this is the company for you!Bad quality printing, terrible HUD interface, slow printing (even grayscale), and to top it off, it won't let you use ANY of the features if even one of the cartridges is empty or low.BUYER BEWARE!

I bought quite a few of these Brother multifunction printers. They make minor model changes quite often but the features are all about the same, other than options. It is a pain that they keep changing the ink cartridge type, though, so you cannot stock up too many of them.Scan quality is good, but high resolution scan is slow via USB. Any quality issue here is due to dirt on the sensor. Just keep it clean.Print quality is good. If not, do the quality print test and you usually find that a nozzle or two is blocked which can be fixed with a cleaning-cycle -- up to a point. I find that they do not clean well after a couple of years.FAX quality is good. It has many options which can get confusing.

After owning this printer for one year, I can tell you that I still use it everyday. Well, the scanner and fax is used everyday. I haven't used it for printing for some time now. Here are my problems:* This printer uses TONS on ink!!! I can't say this enough.Even with full ink cartridges, the printer would print blank pages. Could be because I don't print every day, but I'm not sure. Then I tried the cleaning (over and over again) until one of my ink cartridges was too low. Now I had to replace that cartridge to try and print again since if any of the cartridges are low, you can't print anything. Repeat that process with the new cartridge and now another one is low. See why this printer was never used for printing again?

I purchased this ink sucking machine because I thought I could just replace one ink cartridge at a time...Shame on me I even read the reviews that said that people had problems replacing the ink cartridge and I purchased it anyways. I wanted to replace the black cartidge at a cost of $25. I did so and tried to install. The printer's error message was "Cannot detect". After numerous attempts to correct I reluctantly called the "Customer Service" 800#. The robotic script reader or as brother calls them customer service rep. kept repeating in order to get the black cartridge to work you need to replace the other three cartridges because they are low. So she finally agreed in order to replace my black cartridge it would cost me $100 each time to replace the black if the others were low. I have never taken the time to rate a product but I just wanted to say......... BROTHER SUCKS!

I am very impressed at the longevity of the ink cartridges of this machine, bought this at the end of April this year have run off at least 200 plus copy's and have not had to replace the ink cartridges yet. On my Lexmark 7100 I would have done a replacement twice by now. What a difference and a pleasure to have this machine it has almost paid for itself just in a few months and I have years of warranty left and I bought two sets of ink replacements with it. I am probably set for at least the rest of this year and maybe to the anniversary of me buying it next year, it was easy to set up, its easy to use and best of all my wife likes it and has told me thank you for buying it; and after 25yrs of marriage I did something right thanks "Brother" you made it possible. Its is worth every penny you pay for it. Thanks Amazon for bringing us these high quality products and the extended warranty's that are offered it really makes the purchases a even better deal.

We bought this becasue it was a wireless unit and boy was it a pain in the butt to set up. Initially we had a cable modem and it seemed like weekly I would have to call my cable co. to figure out was was the best setting for it. Then we moved and had DSL again. Not as tricky this time around to set up well I think the hours of frustration prior to this helped that affair. Then we started having this problem when I got a new laptop and my husbands laptob had to be on and open since it didn't recognise mine. Gets even better folks so my laptop went away for a while, I get it back and what do you know, I don't need to open the other laptop and it works just fine. Never touching one setting on it. major complaints no double sided printing, not too user friendly, the head cleaning function comes on at 3 in the morning, wish it had auto tray when you go to copy something from it. It prints but will not buy another like it again.

Brother's ad quotes 35ppm for black printing. Mine took 17 seconds per page. After an hour on the phone I was told my unit was printing as it is supposed. When I questioned the 35ppm stamped on the box I was told that was for a page that had 5% coverage. Their test page had a 15% coverage(says Brother) and it still took 13 seconds. Flat out misrepresentation by Brother.

After owning and reviewing both the excellent Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer and the almost as-good Canon PIXMA MX860 Wireless All-In-One Photo Printer, Brother has to make an airtight case against Canon when they're looking to get twice as much money out of your wallet.Unless printing on 11 x 17" (ledger) paper is a make-or-break need, Brother doesn't make a very good case against the less expensive Canon offerings.Of course, this is Brother's flagship inkjet AIO offering, so they've thrown in a gimmicky touchscreen. Sure, it's kind of cool, but it doesn't really help accomplish much beyond jacking up the price. Is it missing from other AIO printers? Sure. Does it add any value? No.Setting the printer up on MacOS X was quite painless, making for an unexpected treat. Setting the printer up in Windows was also simple, as expected. Wireless printing worked well all around, with very good range. And Brother's dual-tray paper handling is something that's sorely missing from all of Canon's offerings. So, why all the Canon talk? Because comparatively speaking, the Brother MFC-6890cdw takes longer to print both text and photos (single sided and duplex), the photo quality isn't as good, the scanning speed is not as good, the document feeder acts screwy when you're not using 8.5 x 11" paper, and yet... it costs nearly twice as much.A natural retort could be "But Brother is targeting small business users", which is normally true, but that simply doesn't wash when you take consumables in to consideration. Comparing the black ink between Canon and Brother (PGI-220BK vs. LC61BKS), you get rated yields of 350 pages vs. 450 pages. But when you dig a little deeper and compare the cost per page based on the cartridge cost, you end up with 4.6 cents per page on the Canon side and 5.5 cents per page on the Brother side (based on the retail price of both cartridges at a national office supply store). So while it's true that you're going through more cartridges on the Canon side, you're also paying less for them upfront and per page.So at the end of the day, why would you buy this printer? To be honest, I don't really know. If you're heavy in to ledger sized documents, and need the occasional presentation printed, you don't have many alternatives. But if you don't need to print larger than 8.5 x 11" on a daily basis, get yourself the Canon Pixma MX860, enjoy the better quality and the hundreds of dollars you'll save.

Rating is really a 2.5Good: For the price, getting a printer, copier, scanner, and fax is awesome, LCD screen, is highly detailed to let you know everything from levels in ink, to troubleshooting, wireless hook up is a great feature. Only minor problems when it comes to troubleshooting. Ink cartridges can be found for cheap. Easy ink cartridge replacement.BADS: (Based on performance with a 2009 iMac) Takes an long time to print things, in other words, slower than most printers. Prints pictures darker than what is previewed on the computer. Dust Magnet. HUGE CONS: Perhaps this is a fixable issue, but it would not let me print (even in black and white) if ANY of the inks, including colors, were out. INK CARTRIDGES are not refillable like other printers, suggest buying refurbished cartridges or from small companies, you can find them for same or less than a refill, ink must be replaced often! It is a reliable printer but slow and with flaws, if you are printer a lot of photos, or printing often in a hurry, not for you.

Sure, when you first open it up and use it it feels like the best thing in the world, but this machine and perhaps all Brother MFCs have secret flaws that unveil overtime. First of all, it will not print B/W if you don't have ALL the color ink install (maybe all printers behave like this, I don't know but its unfair to the user). Secondly, it will be an annoyance when it wakes you up at 3AM in the morning when it turns itself on in the middle of the night to "clean" itself. Yes, it's true. I thought it was just my Brother-MFC but apparently my friend's also do the same thing. On that point, after a while it will get a machine error that requires you to either throw it away, send it back, or take it apart to clean out its "Ink Absorber". You can also go online and force it to reset itself like what I'm doing, but the absorber will one day explode and that's when I will pull my printer funds out for something new. Invest your money in something else, its 2010, you can get something that performs better for a lower price.

I bought the Brother MFC-685CW six months ago after reviewing a lot of all-in-one printers online and in stores. Despite Consumer Reports giving it a "doesn't quite live up to expectations" rating, I must say it was nice enough and had the features I like, with a great small footprint, and the must-have fax capability, so I picked it over HP, Canon, Epson, etc competitors. I got the idea of having wireless from a friend with a HP all-in-one that he loved. I think it was the HP Officejet 6310.After carrying it home, I set it up for wireless within fifteen minutes, with absolutely no issues whatsoever. I noticed another review saying it was hard, but seriously - I don't remember it being hard, or even how I did it, so I guess I just followed the steps in the manual.Printing is more than ok, but I agree that pictures come out less crisp than professional print. I mostly print web pages, family pics for the fridge, and the occasional airplane boarding card, so I'm more than fine. For real memorabilia or gifts, I get an Apple iPhoto Book instead of doing the printing myself.I hooked this machine to the fax/phone line for a couple weeks, and it did great in sending and receiving fax messages. I never used the answering machine, so don't know about that. The document feeder hasn't given me any trouble, but I think it is limited to 20 or so sheets. And, no duplex printing, which is ok by me. YMMV.Scanner also works great - I love that it scans directly to a USB memory stick, in PDF or JPG! (only drawback is that it first scans the USB stick for pictures, thinking you might wanna print them... give it a minute... :-)This Brother is Mac OS compatible! I am running this printer mostly from my Apple laptop. It includes Mac OS software on the CD, which was fairly easy to set up, but the third party scanner software "Presto! PageManager" is ****. I just use the standard scanner software instead, or scan to a USB stick. A few times, the Brother Mac OS software has lost track of the printer and asks for everything to be restarted, which is a pain. But wireless printing works great from Mac OS and from Windows.Positives:+ Pretty cheap for an all-in-one+ Fax/phone/answering machine included, can remove some clutter from your desk+ Wireless 802.11b/g, USB and Wired Ethernet connectivity+ Works on an Apple Mac OS machine and of course on Windows too+ Really easy to work the front control panel "Scan", "Copy" etc... buttons+ Document feeder for the scanner/copier+ Scans to a USB memory stickNegatives:- as with any inkjet, genuine ink refills are expensive ($50+ on Amazon or eBay)- Mac OS software a little off-the-beaten-track and sometimes stumbles- Photo print quality not top of class for an ink-jet- Menus and interface sometimes a bit on the slow side.- Must select between Wireless or Wired network - can't have both at the same time.I got this machine at a brick-and-mortar PC Richards after trying to get it at JR and Staples, who were both out of it at the time. After six months, and as it is time to buy my first set of refills, I am very happy with this purchase. I have detached the phone handset and stuffed the printer into a cupboard, out of sight. Since it only needs AC power and a wireless network, you can really put it anywhere!I would definitely recommend this to a friend, and have done so a few times already.

Bottom line up front: Don't waste your money on this!I have owned this printer for about 6 months, and have noticed declining print quality after the first month of ownership. Despite numerous cleanings, the machine has since practically stopped printing anything black. Frustrated with the online troubleshooting steps and endless cleaning cycles and new test prints (resulting in needing to buy new ink cartridges!) all of which showed no improvement I called the Brother help desk, which lead me through a couple new maintenance steps which after a total of ten new cleaning cycles and test prints have resulted in no help. Their process to have the machine replaced with a refurbished model seem designed to only cause you to give up and purchase a new machine. Oh and by the way, the new ink cartridges which are three days old and have only gone through cleaning cyles and test prints are now nearly empty!!I will continue to attempt to have this replaced by the manufacturer, but think I will have better results with using Visa's consumer protection... After the run around by Brother, I felt obligated to share this in the hopes that no one else falls into the trap of buying this. Your money is better spent on the brands that are known for making high quality printers.

For an all-in-one printer, with a telephone AND answering machine to boot (now THAT'S dang-near all-in-one), for under $200 I have absolutely no complaints! I actually got mine for $99.00 at a local warehouse club, but that doesn't make this printer any less capable. I've used every feature thus far except the answering machine (already had one at the house), and it has performed all duties flawlessly. The DPI isn't stellar for picture printing, but I didn't buy an $100 printer to print "Gorgeous Pictures", I bought a $100 all-in-one to take up less desk space and do a competent job of printing, faxing, scanning, and copying documents and pictures, with the added bonus of being able to even remove the phone from my desk since there's one built into this unit.I've read in a few reviews that this printer's wireless was difficult to set up, and that couldn't be further from the truth. The directions furnished with the unit were sufficient to have me up and printing, in no time flat, on my wireless network from 3 different computers. I keep a usb cable plugged into the unit and curled up behind it in case I ever need to hard-wire to it, but the cable sits collecting dust so far.Another nice feature of this unit is the 4 separate ink cartridges. If I run out of red, I replace the red. Not all three colors. Also, ink is very cheap for this model if you search around for it. Don't buy from the usual chain stores and you'll save a bundle. In all, for under $200 this unit delivers quality at a discount. Just don't expect perfect picture printing from such an inexpensive unit - read the DPI specs and compare if you're looking to print pictures with your all-in-one. Canon makes a decent all-in-one, without the phone and answering machine, but with better than double the DPI.

I was excited to finally have settled on this model to replace my old workhorse all-in-one. This was so much more compact, taking up much less space on my desk. I liked the fact that I could replace just the color ink that was out and that I could just plug in a handset to use with the fax. Since I use a long-distance calling card, this was a must.Set-up was quite easy even though I'm not a computer nerd. My disappointment, though, was that the paper feeds from a tray that slides into the bottom of the machine. The tray jams regularly, you have to pull the whole thing out, and fan the paper to get it to print. Also, I often slip half-sheets into the feeder and this machine just jams them up and will not print them. Frustrating. I figured in the long run I didn't want to deal with this and returned the whole thing.

After having several HP printers came and went and over paying for print cartridges, I gave this one a try at the recommendation of a friend, and I am glad I did! Beats the heck outa HP hands down.Set-up was a breeze (mac user), only took several minutes. Prints fast and quite, mostly print text, the kids print some photos and complain about it being slow. Ink cartridges and stupidly cheap about $3.00 apiece and last a along time compared to HP. The wireless feature is great the no problems or issues. If I had one small (very small) issue with this printer it would be the paper cartridge or carrier seems really flimsy.Update well after about 8 months of fairly heavy use this printer is still working great, I would definitely get another one of these and if you a looking for a new printer, give this one a try!!!

I setup this printer yesterday in my lab. I was very surprised at first that there was no mention of where the network cable needs to be inserted. Basically you have to open the printer first. I have no idea why they decided to make it so complicated. Setting the printer up is overall a bit of a pain. For some reasons there is no web server working on it, though port 80 seems to be open. The little menu is very counterintuitive as it is not clear what you have to do to go back through the menus. The last straw came today when the printer refused to work, giving the only message "unable to print 30". There is no clue given about what this means and about what to do. Reading on the internet, it seems something might have got stuck. Not bad since we printed something like 5 pages before this happened. But what really angers me is that there is no explanation given for the error, just a useless number. The printer is clearly not thought with the user in mind. Be prepared to waste a lot of your time. I hope my lab will be able to return it.
