I just bought this 2 months ago based on the reviews on Amazon.com, and its been a perfect purchase. The setup is like 15 pages, but I got through it in like 15 min. I entered my WEP key also, and can print wirelessly to it from any of my 8 computers in my house.I have no regrets about this. Prints great, and has been rock solid ever since I bought it (I leave it on 24/7).

Received this printer only 4days after purchase. I read many reviews about printers(including this model) not working well with Windows Vista. So far, no problems at all! I've had this Brother for about 3 1/2 months, and just replaced the black ink cartridge it came with. The other three cartridges are almost full, and I use my printer extensively, as my husband and I attend college and are both required to print numerous assignments. At only $90 with free shipping, I am very pleased with this printer, and how efficient the ink usage is. I also purchased the 10 Pack (4 black + 2 each color) Non-OEM Ink Cartridges sold from TheFactoryDepot for only $18.99 plus shipping. I've had no problem with the black so far (haven't used the color).I recommend this printer to everyone. The print speed seems a little slow to me, but tolerable. I Have not used the wifi yet, so can't comment on that, and I don't print pictures from home.

I read it somewhere else, and after much trial and error I got it to work:In Windows Printer properties, set your printer settings to maximize ink: Bi-Directional printing:NO, Print quality: FAST, Paper: PLAINPlace a very small piece of black electric tape over the small fluid gauge glass on the front edge of the ink cartridge. I had to try a few times to get the piece the right size.. it should cover the 3-sided glass on all three sides, from top to bottom. The tape cannot be too big as it will bunch up in the hole and not allow the cartridge to seat properly. Get sharp scissors or a razor knife and do it carefully. If you have it wrong, the machine will simply tell you that the cartridge is missing.With a marker, I wrote a letter "E" on the back of the dummy cartridges, to signify Empty, and trained my family. When we need color, we will install the full cartridges. Otherwise, we will leave the dummies in.Now if I can just figure out how to get the machine to stop self-cleaning.. that is an ink waster too.

This has got to be the best printer I have ever owned, or even used for that manner. It dose everything it says plus it does it very well. I couldn't ask for a better printer. Now I don't print photos at home I find it to be much cheaper to send them off to wal-mart or such plus the results are perfect every time or i don't buy them. I say let them waste there paper and ink not mine, and with that said ink for this thing is cheap and if u buy the off brand its dirt cheap. Now I haven't had many printers but my last printer was a dell and i liked it all right, but the paper jammed all the time, the ink was expensive. This printer makes me wonder what the heck was I thinking by not replacing it sooner. In short it works well, and the prints look great for my regular home use. I couldn't ask for anything to be better about it. If you have a question about this printer feel free to comment my review and ask.

I'm a college student nearing the end of my undergraduate degree. I don't run a print shop. I print, on average, about 50-100 sheets per quarter (let's call it 2-300 sheets/year).I bought this printer because I needed something that was network compatible (4 computers in the house), and both PC and Mac compatible. I've owned every cheap printer ever made - because they're cheap, and they break. I've owned the MFC-465cn for a year and am in love. I may never buy anything but Brother printers ever again.Pros:- Software worked the VERY FIRST TIME on both the PCs and the Mac.- Network connectivity is not only solid, it has never disconnected. Ever.- Copy function is great. I've copied documents you couldn't tell from the original.- I'm just now buying replacement ink for the first time. Literally. That's how I happen to be writing this review - I came here to buy the ink.Cons:- Noisy- Does a self-test occasionally that is also noisy- Doesn't hold a lot of paper- On the Mac, the printer icon stays in the Dock after your print job is finished. If you close the window, it leaves the Dock as well. I wish it just closed when the print job was over.I heard horror stories about getting wireless printers to work right, or stay connected. Software bloat was a concern. I bought this printer based the strength of its reviews (here and elsewhere), and am utterly satisfied.

Ive had many HP printers and Lexmark. This is my first Brother printer and I got to say its the best home printer Ive ever had. And Im a network engineer / IT geek. Id like to point out that the ability to print in larger print sizes, above 8 1/2 x 14 is a good feature when printing and when scanning large DOCs (diplomas/certificates) on glass. Large printer not for everyone, but I specifically bought it for the large glass to scann large stuff (and print larger stuff, ie. marketing material). Print/scan quality is great, software is really easy to use, feader doesnt get stuck like otHer Printers Ive had. Lots of plug in storage device options, the touch screen is nice, etc. If you can deal with the bigger design, its a great printer and worth the price.

I have nothing but trouble with this printer! Everything that could go wrong did!First it was hard to install..after I got it installed wirelessly because I use a lap top, I had to get up to check paper jam or to restart the machine..got message on machine...paper jam...can't print..Before i had this machine I had a Canon for 5 or 6 years that worked flawlessly! I reinstalled it, checked everyone else suggestions...nothing worked...its useless.

I take back every good thing I have ever said regarding the "consumer-friendly" Brother printers.First off, at face value this printer does a GREAT job at what it is supposed to do: printing, scanning, faxing, and copying.HOWEVER it has a very inefficient mechanism for monitoring and handing ink cartridges that robs you of ink & usage. So while the cartridges are indeed inexpensive, you can actually use about 60% of the ink in them before the ink reservoir detector starts telling you it is time to replace.The kicker is that the printer will NOT work once it detects an "empty" cartridge. I used my printer very moderately and suddenly it started telling me I have low ink; a day later it said I was empty.After research I found that if you tape the clear housing with masking tape you can trick the printer into actually letting you use the remaining ink.So if you don't mind fiddling with this printer to get it to let you actually use the ink you paid for, go for it. However I would suggest you go with Lexmark or Canon. Bad form Brother, bad form...

I wasn't looking for a multi-function printer with a fax. But for the price, I purchased it. I got the machine in Jan. 09. And I couldn't be happier with this decision. Easy to use, I've had no problem with the wireless connection for my laptop. Picture printing was great. (Not even set at higher quality). I am no expert on multi-printers. If you need a machine that will print twenty copies, of a fifty page report real fast. Then no, you need to spend a lot more money! But for a small business, or personal use. It's a great machine. I have a home phone line, and have been able to send and receive faxes, while also having the normal phone calls. By the time I finish writing this, the machine will be obsolete. But for the price, it's worth the money! No complaints so far!

I've had problems with my MFC printer since the day I purchased it. First, I had problems connecting to the printer over my network. The IP address constantly resets and my laptop fails to recognize the printer 4 out of 5 times. This requires me to re-start the printer, reset the printer's network configuration and then re-start my laptop.The copy resolution is terrible. They all turn out blurry and fuzzy - even after numerous attempts to correct the resolution through the printer head alignment feature. This problem has never gone away, thus rendering the copying feature worthless.The ink runs out very quickly and the printer does a poor job of sensing when the ink is running low. Often, the printer thought the ink was about to run out when in actuality there's sufficient ink left. The problem is that once the printer thinks the ink is low, you can't do anything until the ink is replaced. Therefore, I rarely use the machine as a printer.To top it all off, about 1 1/2 years after purchasing this machine, I received a "Failed to Init." message which means that the printer has a mechanical issue that needs fixing. The printer is completely unusable until this problem is fixed - costing more than the cost of a new one.I decided to purchase a Canon MX-700 (for ~$100) and love it. This Canon machine is everything I was hoping for in an all-in-one printer. I will never purchase another Brother product again.

Make sure you like the non printing features because the printer stopped working within weeks. Brother replaced my first unit, and now the second one stopped printing. So now instead of a printer I have a large answering machine! I wish I had purchased something else.

I had this product for 2 weeks when it stopped printing anything from the computer or from the copier correctly.It only printed the top half of each line of print. Knowing how frustrating this is, I initially tried the Brother website to troubleshoot. I went through all the online troubleshooting to no avail. At this point I called customer service. After being put on hold for about 20 minutes, the CS rep then walked me through all the basic trouble shooting AGAIN, after that hour and repeating numerous times that i had tried each troubleshooting procedure once before I was told to buy new ink.My current ink was ONLY 2 WEEKS OLD!I was also told they would not send me new ink - it was my responsibility. So I buy new ink, replace the cartridges and try printing again.Again, it has the same difficulties. Again I trouble shoot. Again I call Customer Service. Again I am on hold for 20 minutes. Again I am lead through the same trouble shooting after repeating myself numerous times. At the end of this call I am told I can take the machine to a service dealer to be repaired (if they Can) or they will send me a USED machine. Why, would I want a new machine when just 2 weeks ago i bought a new machine? I am told this is the best they can do and it will take 2-3 business days. I am also asked for my credit card information. Why? I ask. This is for their protection - not mine. They tell me I have 3 business days to send the broken machine back to them. If I do not they will charge my card. I relent in the hopes of a working machine.After 3 business days I do NOT recieve a working machine, instead I am sent a fedex label to be used to first send back the broken machine and once it is received they will mail out a replacement machine. This again should take about a week.Again I call customer service. Again I am on hold for 20 minutes. Again I am asked to troubleshoot. At this I insist they listen to me and get me a new machine.At this point I am told they made a mistake. They will gladly overnight a new machine IF I give them my credit card information. I am told if I do not comply, they will not overnight the new machine.Again, I relent. After my credit information is taken down they tell me they will NOT guarantee an overnight of a new machine. They simply say they will try.Now I ask to speak to a manager - David gets on the phone. He can only reiterate what has already been said. To add insult to how little this company thinks of its customer's he offers me a $20 coupon towards new ink from the brother store. If you have looked into this machine, please look into the cost of ink cartridges. $20 will NOT buy a new set.Bottom line is this - Brother does not care about their customers, or retaining them, or taking care of malfunctioning machines. They will not be there for you or honor a broken machine. Please pay attention to their guarantee!

Had this printer for 3 months now. It is quiet and gets the job done. Prints fast. Wireless was a snap to setup.Quality is great. Plus - all of a sudden I have a wireless scanner I can access from any computer in the house. and a copier in case of need. I was concerned before I purchased that with an all in one at this price it would be flimsy, but not so. The printer is solid.

I had been on strike against inkjets for years. Ever since the days when the all the colors were in one cart and you'd have to throw away 1/2 full carts because one color was gone.Here I thought Brother had resolved that. A cart for each color AND a cart for just black. Sweet...or so I thought. Brother, in their infinite lack of wisdom, has built in ways to make this machine drink ink like a thirsty camel in the desert. First, the printer "cleans" itself periodically. Every now and then it does a serious "cleaning" and these cleanings alone can empty all your colors. Second, even if you print in just grayscale the printer will use some color. Lastly, if you run out of any color the whole machine freaks out and won't print anything.If that isn't bad enough one of units I bought is now a brick because the cyan jet does not work at all. After hours on the phone with tech support there is no resolution. On the other unit the scanner quit working months ago. Since they are big and heavy it is really prohibitively expensive to try to send them away for repair. I'm stuck with these pieces of junk and in the meantime I'm back to my 10 year old laserjet that still works flawlessly. Inkjets? Never again.

I have to agree with the others on this printer robbing you on the ink. You have to replace the cartridges (color and black) almost every few weeks... regardless if you use it. Once the warning screen goes from low to empty, the printer becomes a paperweight, as most of it's features lock up. I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but it makes you think every time you have to shell out 40+ bucks to get a set of cartridges.As for the unit itself, it is decent. Good scanning and the auto tray works well for under 10 pages. The copying is good, not as fast as some of the others models in its price class.Overall all, I would suggest you skip this one because of the ink issue, it's just not worth it.

I bought this fax/copier/scanner/printer to replace 2 HP printers and a flatbed scanner. My main reason for picking the Brother machice was the individual ink cartriges.What I like: network functionality, print quality, size.What I don't like:1. This machine can not be used as an auto-answer fax if there are other telephones on the line (typical home use). It must be set up for manual answer.2. When another telephone in the house is in use, the front panel controls are inoperable -- you can not initiate a copy or a scan from them at that time. You can still use it as a printer, but you better not run out of paper until the phone call is over. This is a MAJOR shortcoming of this machine.3. When printing on anything other than standard letter size paper (such as envelopes or photos), the machine insists that the paper in the machine exactly matches the size specified from your printing software.4. While there is a HOLD button for the telephone, it will not release the call to another phone in the house (at least I have not found a way to do that except unplugging the phone line).Had I know all this before I bought it, I would have bought something else.

The printer functions fine, however, when powered on, the printer automatically cleans its print heads AT LEAST daily whether the printer has been used or not. Even if one cartridge is out of ink, all print functions stop - including scan, copy and fax. My printer seems to use Yellow ink the most. Brother recommends purchasing Genuine Brother ink only. At today's prices, it will cost $30 - 50, depending on where you shop, to purchase all 4 Genuine Brother ink cartridges. Amazon.com has a very good price ($5 for 4) on Brother "compatible" ink cartridges, which might be worth a try.I WOULD NOT PURCHASE THIS PRINTER IF I HAD IT TO DO OVER AGAIN. There are other printers which cost much less to operate.

This is a poorly manufactured machine. As virtually everyone has mentioned the 'Prints per minute' capability is pathetic and not as advertized, I'm amazed they haven't been sanctioned somehow for false advertizing. My machine maybe prints 4 pages per minute although since speed is not important to me I don't care. I do care about print quality though and the print quality is awful. Also with every 3rd copy or so when we use the largest paper size it jams right at the end of printing meaning we have 2 lines of text printed over each other, this costs me over $4 per print due to the programme I use.Lastly, I needed to change the black ink cartridge today and the little blacl lever I push down just broke in my hand meaning I cannot remove the cartridge, meaning I cannot use my printer. Surprise, surprise, when I call Brother they say it is not covered under warranty.I'm about to order a REAL printer from HP or some other REPUTABLE printer manufacturer. Looks like the Brother will become an expensive scanner!

Just save your self money and aggravation.Wireles setup is nightmare, you can not leave it oneven you do not use it because it is always cleaning something(in the middle of the night too) and when you try to print it takes forever,I started my "test page" 10-15 min ago and I am still waiting for it.Needless to say "cleaning" uses all your ink.I printed maybe 15 pages total since I bought this garbage (all from my mac, pc does not work at all)it is going on the curb the first thing in the morning.

All the features I need in a relatively compact ujit. Ink is easy to change through a door in the front without having ot poke around in the machine. Handles lots of paper sizes. Comes with full size cartridges unlike some printers which ship with a sample size. I did have some trouble figuring out the wireless set up.It has all the features of the $8,000 machine I was using before.I've only had it for a few weeks so I don't know about long term reliability or economy.

I am very dissatisfied with paper selection options for this product.I purchased this particular printer because I need to print and copy 11x17 and 8.5x11 documents.Every time I need to change between paper sizes I have to get up from my desk and either go through about 4 steps in the menu to select the appropriate paper size or remove the paper from tray two and put it in tray one. The trays aren't even interchangeable!To copy:1) menu (OK),2)general set-up(OK), 3)tray setting(OK), 4)tray use and then toggle to appropriate tray (exit).To Fax:Same as copyTo print:Good Luck, I have to change the paper from one tray to the other. In AutoCad I select the paper size but when I print thecopier says "wrong paper size".(There is not a tray use option for printing, only one for fax and one for copy.)I called customer service to confirm that this is the only way to change paper size.Any advice to work around this would be appreciated.Brother MFC-6490CW Professional Series Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer

Not a bad printer, but it's way too heavy on ink.I replaced the cartridges once. (very expensive)I only printed maybe half a dozen pages and it's idle for a long time.Now it says it's out of cyan.I primarily bought it for the document feeder, and for that it does a very good job.If it wasn't for the need to scan a lot of paper, I wouldn't give it house room.

First, shut off your Firewall.Second, press MENU on the printer screen and select NETWORK then WLAN.These two steps will cut through the confusion and allow your computer to recognize the printer on a wireless system.

This printer is a 6-1 does it all from color printing, color copying, scanning, color faxing, pc faxing and photo printing from pict bridge, memory card or through your computer.Things I really like about this printer are:1. 10 page document feeder.2. Memory card reader. My computer doesn't have a memory card reader so I don't have to buy one.3. The price I bought it for from Bestbuy is cheap compared here at amazon.The issues I have with this printer are the following:1. It's a bit slow when you print your documents (Even if you already set it on fast printing.2. When receiving fax you have to set it in fax only when not around or give the caller a fax tone... I already tried a lot of settings like Fax/Telephone, Manual, External TAD but everytime somebody sends a document while i'm not around it doesn't automatically receive the fax!3. On initial set-up under receive mode I have to set my printer to manual because I have issues with my voicemail going somewhere else!4. You have to change your ink every six months. (I have to change mine anyway!) but for some people who doesn't use it often it's costly. I used to have an HP1350 and I don't have to changed mine for more than a year but the price on my HP to change the ink is $[...][ and above!5. No USB ab included. This is a pretty awesome printer I received it really fast. It was a great bargain buy for the price I paid $79.99. It works really good. I am not really familiar on how to set up faxes so that part was kind of complicated for me so, I probably want get the full usage out of the fax. All the other basic functions were pretty much procedural. For the picture quality it was great, better than what I had expected and it printed pretty fast. But I have to admit setting up the printer to print pictures was kind of involving at first but, after trail and error and rereading the directions I got the hang of it. Overall I really like the printer and I loved the price.

After several months ownership this piece of equipment finally got me so frustrated I wanted to write a public comment.(1) It won't fax overseas. Even just to fax one simple piece of paper to another country. It seems so sensitive they fail repeatedly.(2) It won't work as a network printer, wirelessly OR wired. I have spent multiple hours over several days over several months trying to get this darn thing to run on my home network. It works as a direct USB printer is all(!).I have run my own software company for 10 years so I am 'IT-literate'. I even ENJOY solving IT problems - normally. But the MFC-685 has done nothing but frustrate. I have sought all the available software updates and installed/uninstalled the software using both Vista and XP Pro machines multiple times.Enough is enough. I refuse to spend even more hours to get this piece of hardware to work correctly. Brother, you've lost my custom. I know I should have bought a darn Lexmark again. My advice - AVOID the MFC-685.

Maybe we're doing something wrong and need to read the manual more closly but this little printer isn't thrilling us like we thought it would. The print is not at all dark and seems to be very wet and bleeds through. The wireless printing works fine and that's nice. We also are having issues with printing different sizes like the 4X6 & 5X7.

I'm keeping this review short because there's only one thing that really, really bothers me which others should know about. We all know ink is expensive for printers. It's one of the major factors one should consider when buying a printer.I am extremely annoyed with this printer because often times, the cartridges are half-full still and the printer insists the cartridge needs to be changed. When I need to reseat the cartridges, often times, the printer will say there is no cartridge there. I am no printer novice. I've had ink jet printers since they were first invented. My first inkjet lasted 10 years with no problems until the problem which ended it's working life. I definitely know how to clean printers and do any necessary maintenance to increase longevity.Overall, I cannot rate the product very high because of this. You'd think manufactures would be able to improve all aspects of products over time instead of making them more annoying.Updating on 3/12/2008. I've now owned this printer for a couple years. It has performed well. I now use bargain ink which I get for about $1 a cartridge. The network capability on the printer was never very good. I put up with it for quite awhile though. The scan to computer function isn't reliable, however using software like paint.net to scan initiating from the computer has always been reliable for me. Copying has been excellent. Printing pictures never was very good, but that's not what it was ever intended for. Overall, I'm happy with the printer. I like Brother printers because they don't try to screw you over on ink prices.It did take awhile for Brother to come out with a Vista driver.I was going to increase the rating to a 3, but Amazon isn't letting me right now.July 16, 2010: I have now scrapped the printer. It had numerous errors at the end of it's life. Communication to network, scanning, and ink sensing were all screwed up. Copying in black and white still worked. Some of the parts of the printer now have a new home in a cabinet for my network equipment. Those parts are working well. I am disappointed with the lifespan of the printer.

I spent a lot of time researching and reading reviews. The printer was a nightmare setting up. We have both Vista and Windows 7. Once we finally got the printer working....on both computers, we have found it to work quite well. Work on simple set up "directions for Dummies".

Did a lot of research and was really excited when I received the printer. Set up was as simple as it gets. Began to use the features, but after about 3 days, the printer burned up. Smelled like a bad ballast on an old flourescent light and the screen display went blank. I used it enough to fully appreciate the large flat screen for copying, and the automatic feed for copying/scanning. The good news is that one e-mail to Amazon and I had everything approved for a replacement, and all the shipping tags I needed to send the old one back. I can't say enough about Amazon's customer service. I have my new one already and am anxious to set it up and get started. I'm holding off until I configure a new space to put it. It is quite large.

MFC-885CW:We use this only to accept FAXes, and the useage is VERY light (not more than 5 pages per month. At 15 months the black print head appears to have failed just like a previous reviewer has noted above. Ours though is out of warranty. We bought it at Staples, and also purchased their "2 year TSPP Coverage." I usually do not purchase such covrage, so now, I am thankful I have a least a shot at getting this repaired. I wish I had purchased something else! This is just poor quality equipment!

I've always been a fan of Brother products. I currently own two of their laser printers and couldn't be more pleased with the quality and features of the products compared to the price I paid. With the MFC-400cn, the features continue to impress, though the quality is sadly missing.It wasn't long ago when a typical home office would have a separate fax machine, printer, scanner and even a table-top copier. Thanks to technology, all of these functions are available nowadays in "all-in-one" units, such as the MFC-440CN. The benefits are obviously less overall space being taken up, not to mention less consumables to buy for each individual product.Some of the things that impress me the most about the 440CN are the built-in networking (a necessity even for home users nowadays) and the automatic document feeder (ADF). In fact, the document feeder is what really got me interested in this product to begin with. I was impressed a product with such a low price for the home user would have an ADF. Overall, it works very well -- you can put up to 10 sheets of paper (according to the manual, and I've fed up to 15 without any problem) in the ADF for scanning or copying.The copy and fax functions work well -- and the fax machine itself even supports color faxing, a relatively new feature that not many fax machines support. The copying is quick and the results are impressive for a home machine. Be warned though, that this machine does not have a duplexing feature so two-sided copies are a manual process.Now, let's talk about some of the not so good features of this printer. First, the paper tray. Brother had a great idea to put both the paper cassette and photo paper tray together. However, as I soon found out, that unlike my HP photo printer, the photo tray must be manually locked into place when you want to print 4x6 photos and then manually unlocked when you are done. It's not a time consuming process, but it is something that you have to keep in mind and remember to do -- luckily, I did not buy this MFC for the photo capabilities.Second, the paper cassette itself is very flimsy. I was afraid I was going to break it when I was using it for the first time. The plastic is very thin and of low quality. I don't expect it to stand up to the test of time and use.One of the most confusing things about this printer is the menu system. You really have to be a master navigator to get around and setup all the options. I found myself giving up a few times trying to find basic settings (like where do I set the broadcast name for the FAX function). There is optional software you can install to do remote setup that works much easier than using the built-in menus.Speaking of software, I will give Brother credit for supplying a Vista CD for those of us running Vista. However, the software itself is bloat-ware and doesn't work exactly as advertised -- I'm still trying to figure out how to allow Windows to receive automatic scans from the printer.Overall, its a good BUDGET multi-function machine, but you should be aware of its drawbacks. I don't expect this machine to last nowhere near as long as my other Brother products, and I hope that this machine isn't representative of the quality that Brother is manufacturing nowadays.

Don't compare this to an office quality multi function center at your place of business. Those cost tens of thousands of dollars. This gives the average home owner or small business person some pretty handy "big office" features in a small affordable package. (Networking, printing, faxing, copying...all in color)..and for less than $100. If you have a complaint about this machine, it should really only be with print speed. If you have other complaints, you bought the wrong machine for your needs. This little baby was one of the smartest choices I made with my home PC equipment.

Length:: 1:04 MinsThis is hands down the worst printer I have ever owned. Not only does it drain ink quickly, it also has a paper jam every other print. I've only had this printer for a little over a month and its caused nothing but headaches.This printer has caused me frustration to the point that I will never buy a Brothers product ever again.

I have had nothing but problems with this machine. Had it in for service once. Black keeps plugging up. When it self cleans, uses all the color ink?? Ink can go from almost full one day and empty the next. I do not use daily and have already spent over $100 on ink in less than a year. Spent hours via internet and on phone with customer service only to be told that my machine is working as it is supposed to. Will never buy another Brother product in my lifetime.

I didn't actually buy the printer from Amazon. I bought this hulking device at Office Depot because it came with a $100 rebate. But the overall list price is definitely worth it. I mostly got it because it has a large area scanner that I need for my pencil work.Listing the features would be useless since there is already a description of what it does above. So i'll go over the pros and cons.Pros-Very large scanner. Largest i've seen at an affordable price and common availability.-LCD screen. Decent resolution and overall the right size.-Interface. It is very easy to navigate through menus and do what you want.-Wi-Fi. Truly a god-sent. We have 4 computers at home hooked up to this puppy.-Large print outs. 11x17. Woo!-Fast scanning at multiple resolutions.Cons-Software. The package comes bundled with a picture and scanning software. It is overall very slow and I had to reinstall it a couple times because of how unstable it was. This was however on a mac. It might work fine on windows. But it's not mandatory to have it, and if your serious about your work you use other software anyway.-Print quality. Not the best in the world i'll admit. Colors aren't as saturated as I would have liked. I don't know if it not being a laser printer has anything to do with it.-Big and bulky. Consider your home or office space before spending your hard earned cash on this one. It's not a space saver, i'll tell you that much.-The text on the LCD screen can a times be very small. Not a problem for me, but can sometimes be a problem for older people. (my parents)-Printing process can take a while over a wi-fi network. Not painfully long, but enough to take notice.Not applicable-Fax function because I have yet to use it.For me there were three major factors in making this purchase. Scanning in large sketches, printing large documents, and wi-fi. If your only going to print on standard 8.5x11 then go for something cheaper. But for an artist like me who needs a larger scanner and appreciates all the extra stuff that comes with it, I could not think of anything better for the price.

This machine, if left plugged in, will auto clean the heads so many times, that the ink runs out, once a month.If you unplug it between uses to save on ink, it looses all the fax settings.I know it's cheap, but the ink costs will kill you.

Should have listened to the 1 stars. Bought it on a Friday and returned it on Saturday. As soon as I test printed it I realized the people that said it didn't print black were correct. Called tech support and was on the line for less than a minute when she said that it happens on this model. She said they would warranty it, however I chose to return it to Office Depot and exchanged it for an HP 6500. Only had it about a week but so far so good. Brother tech support could have cared less about the problem. Maybe they should fix it - Duh!

i use primarily black ink. even so, it will tell me to replace the colored ink even when it's not full. This printer does will at making you shell out more money for ink cartridges. however, if you don't usually print color, might as well get a toner for a laserjet.besdies that, it prints great photos when using the right paper. scan quality is good, but just very slow.

This was my second experience with a WiFi printer, and this one worked seamlessly. The printer easily joined my existing network and prints wirelessly without any glitches. Wireless printing for graphic files is understandably slower than USB printing, but the ability to locate the unit away from the computer is worthwhile.The Brother prints documents fast and with excellent quality. The fax works well, using the document feeder or faxing directly from the computer (in my case, a Mac). One disappointment for me was that there is no interface that allows you to check fax status or fax logs on the computer; you must print out a paper report on the unit for the latter.The one area where I found this model particularly lacking was in the reproduction of color photos. Most photos were tinted too red, and the quality was not up to par with other photo printers. But since I use other printers for photos, I didn't see this as a significant shortcoming. This is my day-to-day document printer, and it's a good one.

I am very happy with this multi-function machine. It was easy to set up, it's quiet, and I am quite satisfied with copy/print quality. It performs as advertised and I like everything about this device, would recommend it to others.

Since I've owned a MFC-4450 for 10 years,experiencing minor maintenance issues,I decided to stay with a company that obviously produces a durable,long term piece of office machinery. The reason for an upgrade was beyond my control. My new computer,with Windows Vista, is not supporting the old MFC-4450.I'm still using the old printer with my other Win 2000 operating systems.I use the internal WiFi feature exclusively from all computers(no additional external router required,two walls between points).Data transmission speed is more than acceptable.I haven't tried the photo print feature.Really didn't buy it for that purpose.

This machine seems perfect except that this model tends to have ink issues. The more I read about it the more issues I see people having with the ink cartridge being fickle in the setup , and/or the nozzle heads being defectve or clogged. To their credit they are sending me a new machine with pre-paid return of the old (new) machine.I am disappointed so far but will return t review again ince I have it set up.The instruction were easy but I hit this snag and cannot get the machine to print in black (the other cartridges are fine). I dont think I can send out my resumes in pink and yellow so now I have to wait...(to be continued)

The only problem I've detected is the printer's inability to feed glossy paper properly. If you put in more than 3 sheets of glossy paper, it simply does not feed.
