This printer has given me NOTHING but problems. It won't recognize the ink cartridges and somehow has used an ENTIRE cartridge of yellow and blue when I have only printed in black since purchasing brand new cartridges because it wouldn't recognize the old ones. I got my first on in February of this year and it stopped recognizing the ink cartridges by July even after replacing them twice. I sent it back and was given a replacement in August, and the brand new one stopped working by October. I don't print in very high volume, just papers for school and some scanning. If any of the colors run out (which they apparently do of their own accord) you can't print in ANY other color. The sets of ink cartridges are expensive, especially after having to buy four sets because the printer wouldn't recognize them. I'm not spending another cent on this printer, and am sending it back to ask for a full refund. Also, the set to greyscale option didn't work. I tried to set it and, just in case I was doing something incorrectly, also had three other people check to see if it was set correctly and none of them could get it to work either.I will say, however, that the scanner and copier functions work perfectly well for documents (have not used it for pictures or anything with color), and I've had no problems using them with my Mac, which is the only reason that this printer is getting two stars instead of one (or zero if I could). And when it did actually print anything the quality was acceptable.

I bought this printer during my time in college where I studied Graphic Design. I wanted a printer that could print and scan larger so I didn't always have to run out at the last second to a print shop. So far the printer is OK. I don't have the best paper so I'm not sure if that's why the colors aren't as saturated. I don't know about ink consumption either but so far it seems to be doing okay.It prints fast enough through wifi but, can be pretty slow when you're printing larger files. I wish it would of come with a USB cable so I could hook it straight to my laptop, so if that's what you're wanting to do you're going to have to buy it separately. It was easy to hook up and to be honest, I haven't done anything with the CDs. I was going to but, I found the whole interface to be confusing so I ejected and forgot about it. I haven't run into any problems though. It is pretty bulky! You'll definitely want to plan where you're going to put it. I ended up having to get a side table to set it on!It seems like a great price for what it is, but, is still a lot of money. I expected a better print quality, I'm sure my HP desktop printer prints far better.

Wish I had read all these reviews before purchasing it.The first few prints (photocopies) seemed fine (b/w only)Not much printing since, but the few attempts resulted in smudged, shifted printing - ie. it appears that onsuccessive prints of the same document the head is no longer aligned correctly so the result is completelyillegible and appears smudged. I don't see how any cleaning could fix this problem - to the trash heap it willhave to go ! :(One star is being generous.

Contrary to one of the erroneous reviews, the Brother 8085DN DOES support duplex scanning and copying. That is why you pay $50-75 more than the 8080DN, which only does duplex printing. We have the 8080DN and this series of Brother printers is FANTASTIC -- an amazingly powerful business printer for the price of a personal printer. These things are well built, meant for a busy workgroup/small business setting. My wife runs a small nonprofit and has to print board packets and this thing just cranks them out. It will happily print two-sided packets and collate them -- it will go hours of printing without a hiccup. Duplex printing is much slower than one sided printing -- DUH, that is true of ANY printer. You're not going to get high duplex speed until you get into the corporate printers. We have also owned the Canon ImageClass duplexing printer. The Canons are terrific, very trouble free personal printer. But there is a HUGE catch -- their $65 toner cartridge will only go about 1,000 pages. The biggest selling point for this printer -- the Brother 8000 series can use a high yield cartridge (about $85, or less if you feel comfortable using a remanufacture) that is rated at a whopping 8000 pages!!!We do a lot of printing, so I researched extensively, and Brother is in a class by itself for cartridge capacity and low print costs for this class of printer. I highly recommend anything in the 8000 series. The only reason you might not want this printer for a home office is that it is BIG. But you can't get performance like this in anything smaller that I know of.Other good things:1) Energy Star compliant. In sleep mode this printer only draws 18 watts to keep the drum warm. You'd be surprised how many printers eat 40 or 50 watts in standby mode, which will cost you $30 or $40 over a year's time. Energy Star means first page speed is not quite as good as the little HPs, but it's still only like 12 seconds.2) This printer has TRUE networking capability -- no need for print server. That means the only connection you need is ethernet from your router to the printer. Install drivers, and every computer on the network can control this printer completely -- that means scanning as well. I can't tell you how much better that is than having a USB printer that has to be shared. Brother seems to have high quality drivers -- we've connected XP, Vista and Win 7 without a hitch. To sum up, everything about this printer speaks of quality and durability. It is just incredible what you can get for $300-$350 these days.

Installed super fast, ink is super cheap and lasts 2-3 months each, I love that I only have to replace one at a time.Rarely jams for me (don't have a memory of it ever jamming), and has no problems with multiple computers.Cons:Cancelling a job already in progress is a pain, sometimes stopping a scan sent to the wrong computer is a complete restart.Scanning takes 50 steps. Place paper on tray, press scan, scroll down select scan to image, scroll down, select the computer, press okay, then press start? We can definitely remove some of that unneed process in there if I have the computer up on the window (which is hard to see) why can't I just press start?Faxing:Does not tell you the fax number, or give you a print out to show what came through/what was sent I realize this is a waste of ink, but the confirmation is nice, maybe will read manual to find a way to do this.

UPDATE: I am returning this printer to Amazon. I could only get the printer to work intermittently. Then Brother support had me switching settings in my computer for my connection that eventually had me with NO internet at all. Thanks alot Brother.Turns out there's a known issue: scroll down the page to the post by Kent Ickler on 3-14-09[...]After many hours playing with the settings endlessly, I tried this person's suggestions and it STILL wouldn't work - so I gave up. Off it goes, back to Amazon.Would I recommend this printer now? HECK NO! It looks great - but it's a great big paperweight (unless I want to connect via USB - but I wanted a wireless!).*******************************************************************************************************This is my very first wireless printer. One less wire in the world is a much better thing for me! I bought this printer based on the many, many positive reviews about all the features. I wanted to get a machine that would scan, fax, and print wireless, and I found that in this machine and more. It also takes CF and SD cards and will put them up on the screen; you can print directly from your memory card! The main reason I bought it though was it's wireless capability. One thing you should know is that it depends on router how easy or hard this setup will be for you. Unfortunately for me, it was HARD. I have an older router, and don't have the funds to constantly replace computers, routers and other equipment in constant upgrades. If you have a router that has the "SecureEasy Setup", "Wi_fi Protected Setup" or "AOSS", than it probably is easier. If you have a router with either of those things, it just takes one push of a button on your router and you'll be connected to your printer. For me, it involved hours of time. I know my way around my computer, but this was all new to me. I took over an hour of my time reviewing the instructions that came with the printer before I called Netgear (my router); spent over an hour with some guy in India who was obviously reading through the manual to find answers (I eventually had to hang up on him after an hour - he obviously was not going to help me). You'll need to know your SSID; your authentication method (open, WPA, or WPA2); Encryption Mode (None, WEP, TKIP, AES); and your Encryption Key (WEP Key/Passphrase).Once I got it up and running I practically celebrated! I've printed out a few documents and like the quality. I like the fact you have separate ink color cartridges so you only replace the color you've used up. The only thing that would make this better would be if it had two paper trays, or a way to feed labels/envelopes in without taking out the paper tray. Of course, the printers that have two trays are way more money.I'll report back in a few months to let everyone know if it's still in good running order - and if I still love it. Overall, even with all the difficulties setting it up, I just love it now!

I have home network with 5 Windows XP Professional computers and one Intel Macbook running OS X version 10.4. I am a Professional Software Engineer and keep my home network well maintained. I wanted to add a low cost network printer to my network which was accessible from Windows and OS X. I am in the process of retiring all my Windows computers and transitioning all workstations to OS X.After I received my Brother MFC-5460cn, I figured I would start testing on OS X because if I was going to have problems, it would probably be on the Mac. My plan was to test all functionality (print, scan, fax, copy) on both Windows and OS X with the printer configured as a network printer. I did not test the printer's USB capabilities.I started by testing printing and scanning on OS X. After I installed the drivers, the first problem I had was that I could not launch the Brother Control Center Software. Brother breaks from the traditional OS X interface and places the icon to launch the control center software on the menu / task bar at the top of the screen. I did not expect the launch icon to be located at the top of the screen and it took me a while to find it. My bad. After figuring out how to launch the software, I proceeded to test printing under OS X. Printing worked great and I did not find any issues. I tested printing multiple documents from OS X and Windows at the same time. I also tried scanning from OS X while the printer was printing. I did not test scanning from Windows while the printer was printing. I also tried reading the ink levels while printing, this also worked fine.Next, I tested scanning from OS X. There are 2 ways to scan: Initiate a scan from the Brother Control Center application, or initiate a scan from the printer front panel. I started testing by initiating a scan from the Brother Control Center software. I tested scan to image, scan to email, and scan to file. I did not test scan to OCR. Scan to image scans a document, launches Preview (note: Preview is the Apple equivalent of Adobe Acrobat Reader), and places the image in Preview. Scan to file scans an image and places the image in a file on your Mac hard drive. Scan to email scans an image, launches Apple Mail, and places the image in a new email message. All this functionality worked great for the most part. But, during one of my tests, the Brother Control Center software hung and I had to kill it using Activity Monitor and restart it.Next, I tested scanning by initiating a scan from the printer itself. To use this feature, I first used the Brother Control Software to register my Mac's computer name with the printer. This process registers the computer with the printer so the printer can scan an image and send it to the computer. Next, from the printer front panel, I selected scan, scan to file, and then selected my Mac computer name which I chose during the registration process above. The printer scanned an image and successfully placed it on the hard drive of my Mac. I also tested scan to email, and scan to image when initiating the scan from the printer front panel. Just like initiating a scan from the Brother Control Center (as described above), scan to file places a file on the computer hard drive, scan to image opened Preview and placed the image in Preview, and scan to email opened Apple mail and placed the image in a new email message. All of these tests were performed by initiating the scan from the printer. All of this functionality worked great and I was very surprised that I did not find any issues. At this point, I was pretty happy and figure I had it nailed. I switched to the Windows XP Platform not expecting any problems with Windows. After all, it is the dominant OS and I figured Brother would put all their testing into Windows and not be very serious about testing OS X. Printing from Windows worked flawlessly as expected. As mentioned above, I tried printing from Windows and OS X while scanning and reading the ink levels, all at the same time. Everything worked great.Scanning from Windows was another story. I immediately had problems getting the Brother Control Center Software to see the scanner. It was definitely NOT a communication issue because I could print from Windows, read the printer's ink levels, and run the printer configuration utility. But, I could not scan. Finally, after messing around for an hour, I was able to initiate a scan from the brother control center software. But, when I initiated a scan from the printer, it would never transmit the image to the Windows computer. I could never get scanning to work reliably from Windows. If I successfully scanned an image from Windows, then scanned an image from OS X, I would then have problems the next time I tried to scan from Windows. Note that I was running the latest printer firmware level (revision G), and running all the latest drivers which I downloaded from the Brother web site. I also tried scanning from an altern

The inexpensive price tag lured me into buying the Brother 465CN all-in-one printer. The apparent low-cost ink also made this look like a good deal.BUT...After printing only about a dozen pages, I needed to buy more ink.I don't print every day. When I do print, I usually use the draft mode to conserve ink.So I thought maybe the cartridge just dried out. That seemed odd to me.I changed the ink cartridges again(which seem to be getting more expensive each time I buy new ones).Again, after about a month, and only printing about a dozen pages, the 'Low Ink Level' indicator appeared.I couldn't figure out what was using up all that ink.The answer came late one night when I heard the machine in "Cleaning Mode". Apparently, whether I use the printer or not, it runs through a cleaning process which wipes away any ink that may be sitting on the surface of the cartridge, thereby ensuring that ink is being used up.What a waste! What makes it even worse is that if the printer thinks it's out of ink, it won't let you perform any of the other function. No fax. No copy. No scan. This seems counter-intuitive to me.I expected more from Brother, a company that I've worked with for years.I do not recommended this or any other printing product from Brother.

I bought my MFC-490CW yesterday and in the 24 hours that I have owned it I have just one thing to say - WOW!I like this printer so much - that I felt that I needed to review it right away and here is why: (my review is based on over 15 years of owning various printers, scanners and fax machines)1. The Setup:Setup was even easier than most wired printers that I have had: The hardest part of the setup was unpacking and getting all the tap and locks of the printers. After that, I pretty much was able to get everything setup by not even having to take a look at the manual (I did use the quick setup manual). Once the printer was setup and hooked to my wireless network, I installed the drivers that were on the CD on my computers and the setup did all the parts of finding the printer, installing it, that I was amazed that by the end of the installation I had a working printer setup. I have one computer that is wired to the wireless router and 2 laptops that access the network using wireless connectivity. The printer accesses the network through wireless connectivity too. 2 machines on the network run Windows XP and installation was eventless on them. On my Vista laptop, the setup ran into some problem and just kept waiting for a long time. I just shutdown the installation process, restarted the computer and then restarted the installer - this time around - the installation went off successfully. I am amazed at how hands off the installation from each computer is: Normally after the drivers are installed you need to find the printer, etc, etc.... With the MFC 490, you run the installer and you are done... You are ready to print/scan/fax right after that.2. The features:This is probably the most feature rich printer that I have seen in a $100 multi-function printer. * You can scan from any computer on the network. * You can scan from the printer and have it send the image to any computer you like. * The automatic paper feeder works! * You can not only send and receive faxes on the device, but also do it from any of the computers on the network. * the Paper port software provided - does a great job of the OCR * I love the integrated paper feeder for printing - no ugly stack of papers sticking out of the printer. * It is fast - I was worried that being connected over the wireless network - printing and especially scanning would be slow.... but it felt just as fast as when I used to be connected to my old printers using a USB cable. * With all these features - it is like having a separate printer connected directly to each computer on your network.3: Print quality:No complaints - it is a $100 printer - I am not expecting shop quality print outs, yet the quality of photos was good and I could not find anything to complain about. Also - the ink is pretty cheap - $10 for color cartridges and $15 for the black ink. (I found after market cartridges for even cheaper - but wouldnt risk those).4: Scan quality: Scanning was easy and every computer accesses the scanner just as though it were directly connected to it. You can specify scan settings (resolution, quality, size and area to be scanned) from your computer. Scan quality of photos was good. Scan quality of documents was good and the OCR I did of a printer letter was good and had an accuracy of about 95%.5: Looks:The printer has a low form factor - so it blends nicely with the office. With no papers sticking out - it looks very aesthetically pleasing.I would recommend this device to anybody who is looking to buy a new printer any time soon. It is a solid printer, with great features and best of all it is cheap. It certainly is worth $200 for what it gives you in features and ease of use. You can get it for $100 to $130 in most stores.I love it! This is how printers should be made.

I buy these for work because of space limitation, they last about a year when printing 5-20 pages a day. They will not work if you are out of any type of ink, even if you only want to print in black & white and yellow is out. Taking out paper jams can be a pain if they are deep in, as there is no easy access unless you have the hands of a 5 year old.I consider these throw away printers, because once you get the generic error numbers that have no true answer to what is wrong, its cheaper to just replace then to waist the man hours attempting to fix.

I would rather pay up front and not have to purchase another set of cartridges so soon. This is a dumb idea on their part! Oh thank you for the false hopes!

I've had this MFC for a couple of years. It works well enough for color printing and scanning.Unfortunately, it consumes ink standing still -- even powered down. You have to unplug it to prevent it from going through automatic cleaning cycles. Ink prices for this unit have nearly tripled since the initial purchase. Finally, it won't print black when a color cartridge is empty, and it won't scan or fax when any of the cartridges are empty. This is an inferior product.

I really like this printer. It has a small size, it fits under a very tight space. The software is a little cumbersome, but you can do a custom install. The unit itself is pretty cheap, I paid 60 for mine. The scanner is pretty good in general, but you would need to have an ink cartride installed to print, copy, fax, or scan. Defeating the purpose of an all-in-one unit. Those were mostly the pros., now for the cons. The printer is an ink hog, no matter if you turn it off via the power button or unplug it, it will clean right when you plug it in. It feels flimsy, I almost broke the paper tray. The last thing thats mainly a con is the somewhat high price pf ink. I really mostly use OEM ink so thats what im basing the high price of ink on.*UPDATE* After looking on the Brother website, I found a Firmware Update Tool, and now the printer is cleaning less and is a little less annoying and doesent do the 3 beep ritual as much. And to adress another problem. The crappy display angle can be fixed by going to the Menu, pressing general setup, scrolling to number 7 wich is LCD Contrast, and scroll to CONTRAST: Dark. Thats all.

I have been waiting for several years for someone to come out with an affordable wide format printer for desktop use, and this printer is it! Set up was a breeze, and I even connected to my network that was set up by my IT guy...the instructions were very clear. The only issue I had was the setup of the scan unit to scan from the machine itself to my Mac....I had to call customer service, but got through right away, and was able to get it running in just a few minutes. The prints are fine for MY needs, however, I only use the fast or normal settings as I am mostly just running proofs. The ONLY complaint I have is that the scan piece does not have many options built into the Brother desktop program to change settings. I have noticed some streaking in shadow/gray areas on the scans, but haven't had the time to address that issue to see if I can fix it without having to call Customer Service.I am a freelance graphic designer working on a Mac, and this printer is just what I have been looking for since my old Tektronix died a year ago. Affordable, not the BEST quality out there, but definitely worth the money I spent and more than good enough for my needs.

I purchased the Brother MFC-685CW before there were any reviews for it. It was a toss up between the cheaper Brother MFC-665CW and the more expensive Brother MFC-885CW. I went to the Brother website to do a side by side comparison of the 3 printers and I found that the Brother MFC-685CW and the Brother MFC-885CW were almost identical in every way so I decided to get the MFC-685 because the price was right. Though I was wary because like I said there were no reviews for it. I must tell you, I don't regret getting this printer at all. It was a lot smaller than the gigantic Canon Pixma MP530 printer I was replacing. Getting rid of the old printer and getting this one in its place really freed up a lot of space on my desk. Because of it's size, I'm able to position the printer anyway I want now. Though it's a bit heavy, that's not a problem because I don't have to pick it up too often. The other reviewer said the printer is intended to be left on all the time. No it's not. I turn mine off whenever I turn my computer off or when I don't need it. There's no problem and all my settings are always the same no matter how many times I turn the product on or off. He also said that this model is around 3 years old. Amazon and his info is wrong because this model came out last year. But I do agree with most of his other points though ;o).Now for the important stuff, the features. I think this printer is great. There's a bit of a learning curve to figure out some of the features and somethings you may have to refer to the manual in order to use them until you familiarize yourself with the printer. I made sure I used all of the functions of this printer and everything works well. The Brother MFC-685CW has a lot of positives but this product is not perfect so of course it has some negatives.Positives:- One of the smallest All-in-Ones that I've ever seen- All the controls are in the front. You don't have to get up out of your chair to do anything. Everything is at your fingertips. No reaching around the side, back or inside of the printer to do anything. My favorite fingertip feature, being able to change the ink from the front without have to lift up the lid and reach inside the interior of the printer. To change the ink all you have to do is open the cap in the front, pop the ink in and that's it.- It's wireless. I've got my laptop hooked up to this printer wirelessly and it prints out flawlessly just as if it were connected to the printer directly. The setup was pretty easy. Everything took about 10 minutes or so.- I like that there's a speaker phone so that you don't have to pick up the receiver when sending or receiving a fax.- The corded handset and it's base can be removed from the printer entirely, making the printer's width even smaller. The printer comes withan extra cap that you can place on the spot where the handset and the base were removed so that it looks like they were never there. Very cool.- It takes most types of media cards so if you don't want to hook up your camera via USB cable and you would rather take out your media card and view and print your pictures that way, you can.- The printer has a color screen, which is especially useful when you put in your media card and you want to view or make any adjustments to your photos before you print them.- You can preview your fax before sending or receiving it.- Prints documents almost immediately. No long thinking or waiting time.- You can use LC51 compatible inks. You don't have to use Brother's. The ink monitor recognizes them as the official inks.- Printing with the black ink could be a tad bit sharper but it's still nice. This also all depends on the type of paper you use and the print settings. I've printed photos and they come out quite nice on this printer. The heavier the paper you print on, the better your prints. I would recommend 24lbs(standard inkjet paper weight) or higher. Though printing on 20lbs. is decent.- The speed depending also on the print settings is pretty fast. The speed on "Normal" printing could be a little faster. I have my printerset to "Normal Fast", I have "Slow Drying Paper" checked, and I also adjusted the "Color Enhancement" settings, in order to get nice printsfrom this setting. If you don't do this, the prints at the "Normal Fast" setting aren't that great. Set at "Normal Fast", my prints come out in a flash.- Ink monitor is placed in the taskbar of your computer so that you can always check your ink status.Negatives:- No duplex printing. No worries if you, like me, don't use this feature too often.- A little weird and cumbersome putting in 4x6 photo paper. It's not a matter of opening or taking out the tray and putting in the photo paper. It involves a lot of maneuvering and adjusting when in reality it should not be so complicated.- Printing photos is slow and the photo quality is not all that great. Photos appear dull and dark and not vivid at all. I've tried various settings from using the default factory setting to ma

This is a great little fax/printer/scanner/copier if you have a phone line or satellite system that requires a fax with a slower baud rate! Everyone is silly enough to want faster everything, but if your phone system will not support a high-speed fax then you are asking for trouble. This was the only fax I found that had a slower setting that worked with my phone lines, and to my surprise it has turned out to be a great little workhorse. The ink is cheap, the scanner is adequate, it is quiet, the print quality is great for documents (I did not buy it for printing photos!!!!!), and it is fast enough for use in a smaller office. I have run many thousands of documents through mine already, with no problems at all. Once I found out how reliable it is, I even bought 2 more of these machines (quick, before some moron decided to stop making them and I couldn't get the right baud rate anymore). I only wish the black ink cartridges were bigger, because I use it so much that once in a while an incoming fax with too many pages runs out of ink.

There is always that worry, when looking around for the best deal, of getting what you pay for. Thankfully a lower price point doesn't always equate with an inferior product. This all-in-one printer/fax machine/copier/scanner is a bargain for the price. That it is wireless is icing on a great cake. Easy to set up (though the instructions on just how to tweak the settings if you do not have a line dedicated just to the printer could be a little clearer), easy to match up with your wireless modem, easy cartridge installation and removal. Prints fairly quickly and quietly, output is good quality, either in black/white or color, I've yet to think it an "ink hog." My only complaint is I wished it held more paper, but given this isn't a high-end printer, you DO get what you pay for. But it's a small price to pay given what you do get for what I consider a really good price. I've had mine two years now, with moderate to heavy use, and I've yet had problems. I've had every major brand printer on the market, and I think this is my favorite. When it's time to consider a new printer, I will definitely look at another Brother machine first.

This all-in-one is easy to set up, although it is heavy and takes up quite a bit of space. The color is quite good for a 4-cartridge printer. Has lots of nice features, including 2-sided printing. Works well wirelessly. Overall I'd say I prefer my Canon all-in-one (the MX850) because of the size and my familiarity with the Canon interface, but they are pretty much equally good.Excellent choice for a home office that needs color print capability or the ability to print the occasional scan or photo. For heavy B&W documents a B&W printer would be faster and have greater capacity, and for dedicated photo printing there are better choices. But if you need the flexibility of an all-around and have the space for it, this is an excellent choice.

Tried setting this up with Linux. Took hours of searching docs and webpages and got no help from the company even though they have Linux drivers and the manual describes (with inaccurate information) how to use the printer with Linux. After that, I figured it would be a pleasant relief to plug it into Windows and have it work. But that WAS EVEN WORSE. After months of configuring, downloading reinstalling, it still doesn't work right under windows. But since its a network printer one ought to be able to just point to the IP and it'll work. Nope, you need to configure the network options on the printer and on the computer AND THEN STILL DO ALL THE REGULAR DRIVER STUFF TOO; difficult in Linux, not working at all in windows.UPDATE: Works through Google Cloud Print […] via Linux, Mac, Windows, Android, and even my ancient Cell Phone, go figure. Maybe Brother should talk to Google to find out how to operate Brother printers so they can tell their customers.

First there was a paper jam, then there must have been a tiny piece of paper stuck in it and it would not print. After weeks of fighting it would print one page only then say there was a paper jam, which there was not.I did not use it for months then when I started to use it again, just to print, not for photos, it was out of yellow ink and will not print even in grayscale using only the black ink. So now I cannot use it AGAIN until I purchase yellow ink. What a waste of hard earned money.

This printer is so frustrating. There is a separate cartridge for EACH color. There always seems to be some color that is out, and of course it won't let you do anything until that cartridge is replaced. I have printed so infrequently on this machine, yet have had to change the inks 3 times in a matter of 7 months. The print quality is sufficient for regular documents. But it is really bad at printing photos. Even on the Vivid Color setting, the colors do not look right, and are very dull. I've done everything I can to correct that (cleaning the printer heads, putting all new cartridges in at once). But nothing seems to help. Now the printer just sits in my office and looks good. Because it is an attractive printer, but it just seriously lacks in functionality. I will not buy a Brother printer again.

I've been using HP printers almost exclusively. Now that I have this Brother printer I think I've found a new source for printers. Installation was much easier than any of the HP's I've owned. It prints and copies/scans fast... As others have mentioned, the by-pass tray does not handle very many sheets but it works without jamming. You do have to adjust the tension setting if you want to run envelopes through it. This entails flipping two levers, but they are on the back side so depending on where you set the printer they may be difficult to reach.I probably would have given the unit 5 stars if it allowed you to fax documents. I didn't read the fine print when I purchased it and was surprised to find that there was no jack for the phone cord. I thought all mid range PCS printers offered faxing. Guess I was wrong.All-in-All, a great printer, copier, scanner, (not faxer).

I have purchased six of these printers so far for use at construction sites. As far as I know, this is the cheapest multi-function printer that uses 11x17 paper. So far two units have failed - one due to using after market ink - we managed to get it working again with a lot of interior scrubbing with alcohol swabs, the other just died after a years use. To brother's credit, they did ofter to repair the unit free of charge if we shipped it to them, even though the warranty was over, but we opted to just purchase another unit to avoid the hassled and expense of shipping the unit and tracking the repair.I will be purchasing more of these printers as needed. They fill a neglected niche - low cost printers that can print on ledger sized paper, and for that I am grateful. ;-)

The generic ink for this printer is so cheap, and it costs me $1.75 per catridge from some ebay seller. But I can get $2/per catridge back from Staples by recyling the empty catridges. So, I makes money from the heavy use of this printer. Can you find better deal? I doubt. It is true that this printer uses ink even if you never use it. But givine the price of ink, I do not complain it.The printing quality with generic ink is okay, though not as good as many photo printer. But it is usable quality. For example, I printed 2*2 ID picture for my daughter's passport application.Other than printing, all other functions works as they should. I think that this is a very good machine for home-business who do not print high quality stuff.

I bought this in replacement of an older Brother printer. I am very pleased that the double sided printing for ledger works great! I use if for photos, document duplex printing and many more projects. I love the color attributes and how quickly I can complete my tasks. I paid less than the presently listed price, so I got a great deal @ 250. The ink is a little expensive, but I will only buy the original brother brand as I don't want to ruin my investment by clogging the ink wells with generic brands. This will render it useless, so I will stick with what works. I am very glad I bought this printer. The feature of "scan to pc" is very useful for archiving quickly also! simply Love it!

Pros:- large scan surface- can print on large size paper,- ability to read photos from memory card- software is faster and smaller than HPCons:- slow printing speeds- grainy photosBought the Brother MFC-6890CDW to replace a HP L7680 multifunction machine, which had developed white streaks in its print output. This machine has lots of nice features and is quite flexible. I also liked that its software package is not nearly as bloated as HP's. However, its print speeds are very slow. And I found that photos were quite grainy when printed out using its default Photo setting. Even after changing the print resolution to Highest, there was still a considerable amount of graininess in the output. That's a showstopper for me, so I'm going to return it.

I had to get a FAX machine for my home-office and this came up as one of the least expensive so I bought it. (I have a Brother laser printer so I already knew I liked their quality.)I was amazed at the features. With very little effort I was able to set it up as a network printer/scanner/FAX machine on my Windows 7 x64 system, and a bit more work I had it setup with the same features on my Linux workstation.Very nice small office addition.Update 2011-09-18After having this printer for about a year, I'm still extremely satisfied with it. Two other purchases have been made based on my recommendations to friends and family, and it hasn't let them down either. My mother-in-law has purchased a second set of ink cartridges, but I haven't. And that's the reason I'm updating this review.Today I tried to use the photocopy feature, and the printed page was blank. I feared that the black ink cartridge had died, but I ran the "Ink Cleaning" step from the menu, and the next photocopy was perfectly crisp and clear. From my experience with my old HP and Lexmark printers, I don't think the results would have been the same.I'm sticking with the Brother line of printers for a long time.Dan

This printer initially seemed like a real bargain, but now it's become a money shredder... I bought one for myself and one for my mom. My mom's stopped connecting to her wireless connection after only a few days. WE took it back, and her second one lasted maybe 2 months. Mine however, took an entire year, but now it is no longer connecting to my wireless connection. The wireless was the main reason I chose this printer, and that function does not work! It also uses a ton of ink, and will not even scan unless all the cartridges are full. I would definitely not recommend this product to anyone or buy another Brother printer again.

This brand new MFC-5490CN was defective. After calling Brother tech support. They confirmed that it was defective. The only solutions offered by Brother was to pay them a deposit of $50 for a replacement with a refurbished machine or taking it to a service center that's an hours drive away. I think if you buy a brand new machine, they should replace it with a brand new machine -- Period. I had a Brother MFC-3220c that we were replacing. Although we were happy with the MFC-3220c, the failure of Brother to care about quality or service has convinced me to replace it with another brand.

I have been waiting awhile for a `B' size scanner/ printer combo and purchase this one. Like some of the reviews posted so far I have mixed feeling for this machine. The pro's are: 11x17 scanning and printing, fax works good, double sided printing (only on letter or legal size). Scanner is one of the quicker units that I have used. Printing time seems reasonable. The con's are:- Print quality is good, not great. Top quality setting (fine) is equal to my other printer's normal setting or slightly less. Colors seem to be accurate. It is sufficient for my design and office work.- Will not feed heavier stock materials (ex business card, photo, brochure, etc). I had to print my business cards and tri-fold brochures out of my HP printer. Tried some photos and had the same results. The Brother website had troubleshooting information for this but none of their points worked.

If you need accurate colors in your scanning and printing then this all-in-one is not for you. Even after spending quite a lot of time on Photo Shop to make color corrections, the printing colors were dull and inaccurate. We were using this machine to scan and print graphic novel artwork that uses Prismacolor markers and pencils and the colors are very important to the work. When Captain America is wearing purple instead of blue, it's a problem. After all of the adjustments we could get closer but either the shadows or the highlights were still off and it took too much time to make the adjustments. We wanted this all-in-one for the large scanning bed but the printing and the image acquired were so disappointing that we're going to have to return the item. Brother helped us to set up the wireless connection and their service was great but in the end we're going to have to return the product. We really wanted this to work but it's just not right. Unfortunately, it looks like we'll have to save for one of the higher priced scanners. Oh well. . .

The Brother MFC 645CN is really easy to use and very reliable. I've had mine for about two years now, with no issues other than it's ink usage.I rarely use colour, but I find the colour cartages run low after only a few months. In fact, what's happening is the machine's cleaning uses some ink each time. I'm sure that Brother think that their cleaning method works, but this is at the expense of the customer. I've given four stars for everything, but still would not recommend this printer for this single reason.

I hooked the MFC-5490CN up to my home wired network and was quickly able to print to it from my wired linux workstation and my wireless Win7 laptop. Scanning to the linux workstation was also easy and quick to set up.I have two quibbles with the printer, both related to its fax capability. First, it's not really compatible with a phone line that has voice mail. I could buy an answering machine to go with the setup, but it would be really great if the printer had an answering machine built in. Second, the linux fax software can only fax postscript files direct from the computer. This is an awfully limiting restriction, and it would be nice if Brother could write better linux fax support software. On the whole, though, it's a very satisfactory product.

Any machine that will not allow you to switch to black and white printing when you are out of a color ink is a waste of money. I've had to run to out to buy ink at ungodly hours of the day and night when printing for business purposes. The quality is OK but it also forgot my network every 2-3 weeks while my computers were still connected to network. Copies are really smudged looking as well. So much hate for this product.

The wireless connection is just as fast as the wired I think! I would give this thing six or maybe even seven stars if I could.
