I have been using the DCP-8085dn at home for about 4 weeks and am extremely happy with its performance. I was mainly looking for a decent scanner with duplexing capability to scan the family records we have to PDF (which is a mountain of paper). I was also fed up with inkjet printers because we don't print much and with our past printers, the ink cartridges (usually nearly full) would dry up between printing. The black&white (gray-scale) laser printer does a great job for home use.A great additional feature is the networking capability. Since our home was pre-wired for a home network, although I am new to networking of any kind, I found the installation and setup easy to follow and it went pretty much without a hitch. I have a 2 TB Western Digital network storage device (NAS) attached to the network. We use a router that also offers wireless connections. So now the entire family can print directly to the printer from any device (with a printing capability) connected to the home network. Also, the DCP-8085dn can be set up to scan to a folder on the network. I chose to set up a scans folder on the NAS, so I don't have to use a PC to make a scan. I can walk up to the DCP-8085dn and place a stack of papers in the document feeder, hit a few buttons to access presets that I set up, hit the green start button and walk away. When done I can have image files or PDF's waiting for me in the scans folder.A few notes:(1) Even though it might look like one from the picture, this isn't one of those huge Ricoh or Canon copier/scanners like one might find in an office setting that can scan 100 sheets front and back in a matter of a couple minutes at a decent DPI. It is smaller and slower. But for home use and for the price, I think it's perfectly acceptable.(2) The DCP-8085dn does not have a fax capability. But instead you get full duplex capability when copying, scanning and printing. Since I never send or receive faxes at home, this wasn't even a consideration for me.(3) DUPLEX SCANNING NOTE: ALTHOUGH THE SCANNING GLASS IS LARGE ENOUGH TO SCAN LEGAL DOCUMENTS (8.5" x 14"), WHEN USING THE DOCUMENT FEEDER IN DUPLEX MODE, YOU CAN'T SCAN DOCUMENTS MUCH LARGER THAN LETTER SIZED (8.5" x 11"). IF YOU PLAN TO SCAN A DOCUMENT WITH PAGES LONGER THAN 11", YOU HAVE TWO CHOICES: USE THE DOCUMENT FEEDER BUT ONLY SCAN ONE-SIDED, THEN REDO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOCUMENT ONE-SIDED OR DO IT MANUALLY ON THE FLATBED. THIS WAS ACTUALLY A SLIGHT DISAPPOINTMENT FOR ME, SINCE THE DCP-8085dn CAN HANDLE LENGTHY MULTI-PAGE LEGAL DOCUMENTS WITHOUT A PROBLEM MANUALLY. Although I'm not certain, I suspect that the issue has to do with the available space the document feeder has to flip a page over. Any thing up to 11" in length can be flipped over, but anything longer can't. If you decide to scan a double-sided document one side at a time, you will need software to edit PDF pages to put them in order. This has not been a deal breaker for me, as most documents I have a letter sized or smaller. But it might not be suitable for someone looking to scan loads of legal sized documents.(4) SCAN QUALITY NOTE: ALTHOUGH THE DOCUMENT FEEDER'S QUALITY IS ACCEPTABLE FOR MY ARCHIVING PURPOSES, IT TENDS TO WARP THE IMAGE SLIGHTLY. SCANNED PAGES (VIA THE DOCUMENT FEEDER) TEND TO HAVE A CURVE OR BOW DOWN THE PAGE. IF I WANT A REALLY GOOD SCAN I HAVE TO MANUALLY SCAN USING THE FLATBED. WHEN USING THE FLATBED, I DON'T GET THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE CURVE/BOW. SO, IF YOU NEED AN EXACT COPY WITHOUT DISTORTION, YOU'LL NEED TO MANUALLY SCAN AND NOT USE THE DOCUMENT FEEDER. For my purposes, the convenience of the document feeder outweighs the acceptable slight distortion it produces over standing at that the DCP-8085dn and manually scanning documents.Over all, I am extremely pleased with the DCP-8085dn. I have been using the scanner like crazy working on eliminating that mountain of paper. It's slow progress, but I'm getting there thanks to the DCP-8085dn.I recommend the DCP-8085dn to anyone looking for a home-use scanner with duplexing capabilities (except as noted above). It's a good printer and copier, too. Furthermore, the networking is a bonus that you should take advantage of if you can.

Gillette razor model: practically give the device away, then charge ridiculous prices for the refills. This Brother printer makes the Gillette model look like fair dealing.I'm echoing many other reviewers' reports of the intolerable rate at which cartridges need to be replaced and cartridge usage and replacement is virtually criminal:1. Like other reviewers have stated, even if the black cartridge is full and you specify greyscale just to b/w print, e.g., a short, one page email or something, it's ignored b/c suddenly a new "cyan" or whatever is emtpy. "But it's greyscale, you fool!" you scream at the inanimate device, but to no avail. This can't be by some practical design because some color ink jets only have C/Y/M (no black) then combine all three drops to produce black. Having a dedicated black cartridge is designed to avoid wasting color on black and white. So, because of the way Brother has it, the only conclusion I can draw is that the absent benefit of a dedicated black is intentional to force new ink no matter what.2. Explain to me why Brother is entitled to the prices charged for small, cheap plastic canisters containing a small amount of liquid that likely costs them less than $1.00 apiece to produce, import, package, and distribute.3. Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if cartridge replacement was a direct function of, oh I don't know, actual printing? Understanding that over time some of the liquid will evaporate, the rate at which the cartridges empty themselves in between prints leaves to no other conclusion than it was designed that way. It's the equivalent of your car's gas tank running dry while it's parked in the garage. I bought mine new 5 years ago and the cycle has gone something like this: buy cartridges, *maybe* run a small print job or two whenever the need arises, but within 6-8 weeks of installing new cartridges, time to buy new ones. Case in point, and why I am writing this, today I printed 8 pages that had black backgrounds on a full tank of black. Guess what? Went to go print page number 9 and black is empty. I even took the printer outside and started rotating it, etc. to see if any ink leaked out because I simply can't account for where that liquid went.I spent around $100 for the device (which included cartridges hence underscoring point #2 above--the device was probably worth about $90 and the cartridges actually $10), but I don't even want to estimate what I've spent on cartridges since then. And I bet I've printed less than 100 sheets in that period. I know because I'm looking at the same ream of paper I bought when I got the device :)Sure, non-OEM ink can be obtained for a fraction of OEM, and they're likely coming from the same overseas assembly lines anyway. But you could quite possibly be risking either lower print quality or damaging the device and I've read ad-hoc reports of each. On the other hand, I've seen non-OEMs in bulk for insanely low prices and just ordered a 4-pack of 4 cartridges for about $8.00[...]. Assuming it doesn't melt the printer and is acceptable, that will be my stop-gap until I can find a reasonably-priced and quality color laser that is obviously NOT from Brother. Sure, non-OEM is MUCH easier on the wallet than OEM, but even if they were free I still don't want this "10 gallons to the mile" piece of crap.Don't get this device and if you already have one, give it away to someone you don't like.

Brother MFC-795CW Inkjet Color Multifunction Centre with Wireless Networking for the Office/Home OfficeThis was purchased on 9-05-12. Although this was delivered within two days, and I praised the supplier, it has consistently failed to produce satisfactory results. My two previous Brother all-in-ones each failed within two years; yet I wasn't smart enough to read the reviews on this model before ordering.Within the first week, photos printed with blurred, wet results. The first three times I attempted to use the fax, they did not go out. I had downloaded updated drivers, followed all Brother suggestions to remedy the problems. Then, in the midst of printing files to edit a book, the black print had "holes" in it. Following all instructions in the manual to correct this - I used 1 FULL CARTRIDGE of black ink before it corrected. Not synchronicisticly enough, I received an e-mail the next day telling me those instructions SHOULD NOT BE FOLLOWED, and, instead, "do this". GREAT. Obviously, Brother was finding flaws in their instruction for remedying the problems with this printer and even extended the warranty an extra year??????Immediately, I then experienced gross misalignment of the print on the page - to the point that I could not read the pages to which I needed to refer in order to complete the edit work.Once more, I followed all the instructions - with absolutely no resolution. I was told it was a "HARDWARE" problem and I should contact Brother International. Well, I attempted to do that; and after THREE attempts with 3-hour "wait times", I gave up today and chose to return it and request a refund from the non-Amazon suppier. I ordered an Epson with excellent reviews, from Staples, which will arrive tomorrow. At least if I have a problem, I can return it to the store 8 miles away.Bottom line....DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY, TIME, SANITY and experience nerve compression from holding on to a phone to try to address the flaws.

It's apparent from some of the negative comments decrying the limitations of this unit that those commenters didn't bother researching all the features before buying it. I'm not blaming them, because researching any new electronic product is generally a daunting task these days, with manufacturers often releasing incomplete specs and even the "expert" reviewers apparently too busy to dig up the missing info.I bought a used MFC-210C after wasting money on a new Epson and a new HP, both of which had problems like expensive ink and constant paper jams. I researched extensively until I found a great site online that detailed things like ease of use, cost of ink, etc for several models and brands of printers. According to the site, Brother is one of the few (if not the only) company that has released printers whose ink systems weren't designed to milk the consumer to the max. Cheap clone cartridges are available that work fine, and the cartridges are refillable with even cheaper ink if economy is the prime concern. No chips or hidden counters that'll shut your printer down if you try to refill. The manual is barebones, true, especially regarding the scanner features. And the automated features and default selecting options are limited. It seems to be necessary to reset the scanner options (image, OCR, to email) on every scan, which is a little time consuming and annoying if you're scanning a batch.Setting up the printer was a breeze on my Mac Mini. Brother has a GREAT support site compared to some other name brand manufacturers (who should be ashamed of their crappy sites) wherethe drivers and support files are very neatly organized and accessible. It appears to be a very complete list as well.Setting up the scanner was a little trickier, but only because I tried to skip the instructions which required unplugging the printer first. I didn't see how that would matter, but it did. So be sure to FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS - THEY WORK!The printer I bought had apparently been in storage for a year, and the heads were completely clogged with dried ink. I had to run the cleaning utility at least seven times but by then it was clean as a whistle. It prints and scans fast enough for my purposes, but if you need an office warrior to spit out tons of pages every day then you'd probably want a beefier unit designed to take massive abuse. (If so, I'd check out Brother's models first.)I was a little nervous when searching for scanner software that I'd end up having to buy it, because I didn't get the CD software with it. But Brother had everything online for free needed to run this unit, as well as pdf set-up guides and manuals. This is my first Brother and I'm impressed with it and with the company. I used to be a big fan of Epson (still run an old workhouse Stylus 600 on an old Mac I occasionally use) and I've owned HP and Canon printers. I went with a used one this time because past experiences made me leery of paying full price on a new printer that I might hate. If Brother stays as user friendly and ungreedy as they are now, I'll stick with their products when I upgrade to a brand new one.

Cons:This machine is made of plastic, tears of stillborn babies, the hatred from condemed criminals, some metal, and the combined madness of a buring lunatic asylum. It has been sent here to Earth, to hasten the apocolypse. It starts off working fine. It has good print quality, you can print wirelessly, and do many functions, but that is how the Devil lures you in...with false hope based on nothing but lies.Your innocence, and love of humanity becomes shattered the second you run out of any one color of ink. Which, as this infernal machine is designed, will be all of them. At once. See, unless you are actively printing lots of color pages and actualy using that ink, it just sits there. Well sitting ink doesn't put money in the bank of Brother. So it expires. When did ink become like milk? Well, it didn't. But according to brother, their cartridges expire (I.E. stop working for no f-n reason what so ever) so as that you don't run 'old' ink through your machine and cause some sort of industrial accident of biblical proportions. Now in order to stop your printer from printing without a certian shade of color (Can you imagine what would happen if your picture of flowers came out yellowish instead of the deep blue it should be? Thousands of lives could be lost), the machine shuts down. Compleatly. No color printing. Sort of makes sense, so you should just switch to black and white, right? Not according to brother. See, if you tried printing an image in black and white with an empty color cartrige, the machine might suck empty air from the cartidge and cause some sort embolism, which in turn could possibly cause your printer to explode, (since, you know, air is harmful to printers) and we certianly don't want that.So NO printing what so ever once you run out of a color. None. Just like how you can't start your car if the windshield washer fluid is empty. It's for your safety. God help you if you got air mixed in with ink. You accidently get the correct air/ink ratio, and that stuff is worse than thermite. But what else? Oh yeah. No scanning. No scanning because you are out of an ink color. And no faxes. Can't send a fax down the phone line if you don't have the ink to make the image on the distant end, right? Your printer pretty much turns into a brick once that cartrige empties. "Only replace the cartriges you need to"? Well thats not so much a feature as it is common sense. It's like a dentist who says "I am only going to drill the teeth that have cavities...Those other ones don't need fillings, so I won't do it" Medical science has come so far! Of course you only replace cartriges that you need to. Only brother can take common knowledge and call it a feature. This machine is straight from hell, and should never be bought if you value your soul.Pros: You can buy another one of these accursed machines for less than the price of buying all brand new ink cartriges. Out of ink? Toss that sack of crap in the trash, and get a new one. You'll save money. Or better yet buy something that is not a brother printer.

I've had this printer for about 2 years now and I almost love it. Easy to operate and cheap ink can be bought on-line. BUT, like many other owners of various Brother models, I began to experience 'Low Ink' messages when the cartridges were still somewhat full, and then 'No Cartridge' messages when I inserted brand new Brother Innobella cartridges. Very frustrating because the printer essentially won't print when these incorrect messages persist. So here's what you need to know...Most ink jet printers, like this model, use electronic sensors to monitor ink quantity inside the cartridges. These somehow monitor the ink levels thru a clear tab or window on the cartridge. The problem is two-fold. First, the sensors are mounted rather high in order give you lots of lead time to order a new cartridge. And secondly, the sensors on Brother models frequently malfunction - and when that happens the machine won't clear the error messages and may refuse to print anything. Very frustrating, especially if you just bought new cartridges hoping to solve the problem. After scouring online for solutions, I have compiled the best options below. Start with simple fixes first and work your way up to the more drastic ones if they fail. But definitely don't toss your printer in a landfill until you've tried these. One note: most of these solutions essentially override the ink sensors, so its very important that you check your cartridges once in a while because if you run the machine with no ink in any of the cartridges it can cause permanent damage to the printer. OK, so here ya go:1) Turn off and unplug your machine several times. This may help the machine reset itself.2) Cover the tab or windows on your cartridges with black tape - there are lots of posts online on how to do this, its very simple and seems to work for many owners.3) Turn off the sensors altogether. This can be done by using the key pad on the printer to access its operating system - there are a few good posts online on how to do this and many Brother models of similar age share the same operating systems, so find a post that matches your machine somewhat closely. The process is a little cryptic but does work for some models.4) When all else fails, take a pliers and simply remove the sensors. This drastic step was the only solution that worked for my 465CN, but its been a month since I did it and I am glad to report no problems at all. If you take this risky step, be sure to unplug the machine to protect it and you from electric shock. Then use a needle nose (pointy) pliers and gently tug off the black U-shaped sensors mounted on the back wall inside each ink cartridge compartment. They pop right off and I think they are just coverings, because underneath each I found two small white plastic cubes. I tugged all of those off too and used a small wire snips to clip the wires back that had been connected to them. I think removing these little wired components is critical - removing only their black coverings didn't seem to have much benefit in my testing. Put the ink cartridges back in and turn on the machine to restart.Hope this help - Good luck!

I have used this series of printers for about 12 years, I have found that theBrother line works well in a medium duty home office environment. Here are some comments:1. Networking is a must. These work well and easily with every device on my network. My PCs, MAC, iPhone and iPads can all see and use this printer. Some devices have a little trouble with a few features, such as duplexing, but all can print easily.2. It is fast, fast to print and fast to warm up from an idle position.3. Scanner works great with multiple resolutions and in B&W, color and grey scale. Works with the feeder or directly on glass. While Brother scan software is a start, there are better products that work faster and easier in the OCR and image manipulation area.4. Duplex works well in all modes I have tried.5. Get good quality paper, this prevents jams and double feeding. Also store the paper flat and control the humidity in the copier and paper storage area.6. Get largest toner size as it is most economical cost per copy.7. In high usage clean out the paper path, check for small pieces of residue that may cause jamming or wear and shake up your toner cartridges occasionally.Problems1. Brother service depends on local dealers. So just lie,car mechanics, you need to find a competent service dealer in your area as just because Brother approved them has little meaning in the expertise area.2. Older units in series seem to be harder to find parts for, I replaced one 8840 unit as it was going to cost 75% of the price of an on-line newer model from Amazon.3. Manuals sometimes are not well written for native English speakers. Now maybe if I spoke another language and then learned English it may make sense....Currently using 3 of these and am well pleased overall in the value for price paid.

I absolutely hate this printer. After a few months, it stopped printing on regular mode, so for many years I had to print on high quality mode. Killer on the ink, might I add. It constantly jammed and stained my important print outs with black ink. I tolerated it again for many years. Just a few weeks ago decided to no longer print at all. Of course this happened after I spent hard earned money purchasing a load of brand new ink AND when I needed to submit some important documents to the state. I foolishly decided to buy another MF...C 240C (used) from eBay only to find this 'mint condition' MF doesn't print black ink no matter what type of trouble shooting is done. I read online that it is possible the print head is damaged. The cost to fix it would be more than the price of the print. Luckily I had a Cannon pixma MG series. It is quiet, color menu, Bluetooth enabled, dual feed tray for printing and more. The MF is NONE of those things and costs about the same as the Cannon. Need I say more?

I bought this item brand new from Amazon and I can only use it as a printer. I have a small office and needed an efficient copier for duplex copying. After reading the reviews, I thought this printer would suffice due to the cost and the functionality. Needless to say, it has been disappointing. As a printer, it works great. However, if you need to copy anything, it will continually have a paper jam. I cannot return it because the return window is closed and I am stuck with a $360 unit that is only good for printing.

This printer can't even be called by this name. It never worked like it was supposed to do. Suddenly, after a couple of years of buying it (and only occasionaly using it) it stopped printing black ink. It simply makes the usual noise, but no ink is deposited on the white page. So I changed the cartridge (buying a new one). Nothing. I sent it to technical service and paid for a repair... that lasted for less than a month. And here I am again, no black ink.So, don't waste your time and money. Don't buy one. If you have one and it stops printing black ink (like it seems to happen to many other users), don't loose your time looking for a solution and don't spend your money buying new cartridges or repairing it. Trust me: Get rid of this piece of junk. Thanks Brother! I used to trust you after a good experience with an old laser model (that still works perfectly). But never again. If you can't produce a multifunction printer that works properly, don't. But selling this junk (currently discontinued) was a deception! If 2 years lifetime seems good to you, it isn't for me. But worst than that, Brother made me spend time and money trying to solve a problem they did never solve. Shame on them.

I intended to use the Brother MFC-6890CDW professional to replace a HP 7310xi. The Brother was selected over the HP 8500A Pro Plus because of the 11x17 print and scan capability. However there were problems right out of the box.1. Set up was relatively easy, but 27 years of computer engineering may have helped. So, you may have to call on your own computer knowledge, skills and abilities to get device to work correctly. The instructions are not very clear and not very well written.2. The printer is very large, but light weight because the majority of the printer is made of plastic. The plastic trays, slides and release points are sometimes hard to get to move. BUT BE JENTLE because the rather fragile plastics appears to be looking for a reason to break.3. The print quality is poor. The colors are faded and the black gives a poor gray tone. Even when set to Vivid and Fine quality print and copy the colors are still faded. The HP 7310xi produced photo quality images with standard print/copy settings. I expected the same from the BIG Brother. Note: There is no function to clean the cartridge nozzles on the Brother MFC-6890CDW Pro. I thought of taking the ink cartridges out and reinstalled them, but the instructions says the ink cartridges should only be removed when they are empty. So if they are defective, I will be stuck with them until they stop working.4. The 11x17 scan and print functions are not easy to navigate. So the main sale feature of the printer is not as expected. The default setting for the printer is letter size, so you have to set everything for the 11x17. BUT after you have scanned or printed, the machine will reset itself to the default page size.5. The scan product is very poor. I had to use a lot of image enhancing software to get a decent image. I never had to do that with the HP 7310xi. And I really don't have the time to spend correcting the scanned images.6. The printing is very slow. I don't know how anyone is getting 28 ppm from this printer, when it takes nearly 9 seconds to print one image with faded colors and gray toned blacks.7. One very irritating thing is that the FAX function is the printer default state. So after printing, scanning, copying, and after a wait period, the printer will reset itself to be a FAX machine. So you have to press, COPY then Color or Black to copy a document. And of course you have to set all the settings for the 11x17 capability AGAIN.Summation: If you must have 11x17 print capability at an economical price, but you are willing to accept compromised print and scan quality, the Brother MFC-6890CDW Professional is the product for you, however if you need good quality print, fast printing, exact image scanning, and a generally easy to install and use All-in-One printer system I would recommend that you please look elsewhere.I will return the Brother MFC-6890CDW Profession. Then I will repair and reinstall my HP 7310xi and wait until some company offers a really good 11x17 All-In-One.

When we bought the Brother all-in-one printer, we were looking for a printer to replace our previous non-responsive HP 3 in one printer. Also, now with wireless in our home, we wanted to take advantage of printing from any room. Brother is said to be a good product that up until recently was only available to professional companies.Pros:-Fax option: we don't have a land line, so the fax option serves only as the wireless printing.-Scanner option: I'm not sure about the stats, but it does work very nicely. Not too fast, but good quality. It also gives the option of sending it to your email as a file attachment, scan as a picture into a graphics application, scan as a document and convert it into an editable text file, or send it to one of your connected computers (on the network), saving it as a file.-Copier option: Works just like a photo copier, but with the speed of a scanner-Photo capture option: we haven't used this option much, but probably should. You're given several options, such as from a thumb drive or memory card. Such ports are located in the front of the machine for easy access.-Color digital monitor on front that raises to convenient angles for easier reading.-WIRELESS: Fully wireless, easy to set up. Allows you to print from anywhere in the home-Took us a while, but we also found the mac address so we could add it to our secured network-Color printing (Black, Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta cartridges, VERY easy to install, don't cost much to purchase(Also, some stores like Office Depot will refund you $3 for every cartridge recycled to them).-Top-loading for scanning, printing, and faxing-Great for printing photos (photo paper was included in the package when we bought ours-Great device...when it works:Cons:-Ink amounts: It claims not to use much ink, for it does have a setting that allows you to conserve ink. But this setting results in a VERY light printout, almost pointless. The regular setting isn't bad, but does tend to use more ink that we'd hoped.-Scanner/copier is a little slow-At one time, for some reason the printer went "offline". We couldn't figure out why or how to resolve the issue. Software did not give an option for resolving the issue, only tell us that it's offline. Stayed like this for about a month with no sign of resolution. One day the power went out in the area. When it returned, something in the printer reset and was suddenly online again.-The issue we're dealing with now: New ink cartridges (one's a little low, but still has a enough to print), yet the device is not registering 2 cartridges. You'd think that even when you switch the settings to "grayscale" (or black ink only) printing, that you'd be able to bypass the un-recognized colors and just use the black. But if those other 3 colors aren't ALL installed (or picked up by the device), nothing prints (and these were official store-bought cartridges!) Tried unplugging it, hoping for a similar situation as previous "offline" situation, but with no luck.-Instruction manual that comes with the device is not very helpful/informative.-Help menu often doesn't list issues we're having.-The Brother is purely wireless, no cord option. So if your wireless network goes down for any reason, it's nothing more than a pretty copier on your table. As I'd mentioned, we bought the Brother as a replacement to our previous rarely-working HP printer. Now, we need to find another printer to replace our rarely-working Brother printer.

I've had my all-in-one for approximately 4 years and my only complaint was the over consumption of ink! Also, if any of the color cartridges run out of ink then then unit will not print (even if you have a full black cartridge).Another little annoyance is the machine running it's cleaning cycle on it's own at random times. This solid workhorse may not be fast but puts out very good quality prints, depending on how user sets preferences. our first brother inkjet lasted about 5 years, and this one is less than a year old. One thing I LOVE about brother printers is their one color one cartridge philosophy, so when one color runs out you only replace that and not a whole set. some aftermarket cartridges work well with this unit, while others don't work consistently. brother cartridges always work. Keep up the good work, Brother!! I also have a Brother laser unit for high speed work.

I bought this printer a couple of years ago and was very happy with it. Other than the lack of automatic duplexing, it did exactly what I wanted it to. Plus, the black ink was reasonably priced and water-resistant, which I needed for the art-related stuff I was using this printer for. Then one day - no black ink. The colors were fine - just the black stopped working. I followed all of the usual procedures. Cleaned the head and so on. Nothing. Frustrated and angry that I only got a year's use out of the thing, I put it away to deal with later. So today I finally pulled the thing out to take a look. Amazingly, after a year of dormancy the color ink still worked perfectly. The black, not at all. I did a little research online and ended up messing with the sponge that's used during head cleaning. Basically you put Windex on the sponge and let the printer head soak in it. Nothing. I saturated a paper towel with Windex and did the best I could to "scrub" the non-removable, practically inaccessible print head. Nothing. Having nothing left to lose, I finally went after the damned thing with a couple of screwdrivers to see if I could disassemble it and pull out the whole print head assembly. Evidently, this is all but impossible without breaking the plastic components. The most infuriating part was that after attempting the Windex cleanings, I'd do the regular cleaning procedure and see tons of black ink on the sponge. So ink WAS flowing; it just somehow wasn't getting to the paper.I've wasted enough of my weekend on this piece of junk. I really did enjoy this printer while it was working, and felt a twinge of sadness at the crunch when I tossed it into a trash bag. But all it is now is a dust-collecting hunk of plastic, so off to the recycler it goes.

This is a good product for the price. Here are some comments I have after using this for almost a year:This does NOT come with an USB cable. Order one off amazon if you're planning to connecting it so it arrives at the same time. When the printer runs out of an ink cartridge, it will not print in any color. I have had cheap printers from HP that could do this by replacing the missing ink with another or simply printing black and white/grayscale, but this printer seems incapable of doing this, which is frustrating.I have yet to have a paper jam, even when using glossy and semi-gloss paper. I have also only had to cancel/restart a print job once when printing a very large pdf. This printer does not print side by side, which I knew about when I purchased it. I now wish I had spent a little more on the version that does do this. While it copies from a feeder, it does not print from one, which would have been very convenient for doing fast prints of things like envelopes. It took me a very long time to figure out how to scan a document 11x17. It does do as advertised, you just have to tweak the settings. Overall, the scans are okay if you are not are only scanning documents. If you are an artist, I would recommend getting a real scanner because the results from this are rather poor. Very low contrast and white-washed images, no matter how you tweak it.The software for this is useless and insists on booting up every time you connect the machine. I don't know why I installed it in the first place. it also takes a very long time to install and you have to be there while it does, not leaving it running and coming back later! The wireless network seems to not want to work in a secured network. I want to mention that I did not find this machine to be noisier than other small ones I've previously owned. It does make some noise, but not enough to annoy me or wake the cat up.Overall, this is a good printer for the price. It is not in heavy use so i expect to have it for a long time. It's easy to use, albeit a little slow and it has been frustration free for me (other than the installation), so I would recommend this to anyone looking for and affordable printer than can do almost all with decent quality. If you are looking for a SUPER FAST, SILENT, SIDE-SIDE PRINTING, FLAWLESS SCANNING and SMALL device this is not the choice you want to make.

In buying a printer I need to be able to get cheap ink and print over the network (preferrably wireless). I got so much more with this printer. I found mine for eighty dollars at a big box store with a yellow and black sign. The wireless setup was simple (you MAC people must like misery) and took only seconds using their wizard once I enabled the MAC address in my Belkin access point. It took a minute to find the printer's MAC address, I printed the network configuration and it was listed as something other than MAC, but it is easliy recognizable. I've installed many HP printers, Parallel, USB, SCSI, Wired/Wireless Ethernet. This install flat out eliminated the HP hassle factor. The most time consuming part of the install was loading the software onto each PC in the house.Network scanning: When you press the Scan button on the printer, you get 4 choices, scan to file, image, OCR and another. I use Scan to file. For me, the only improvement they could make would be making scan to file default to PDF, where it is JPG or BMP as default. Changing the default is easy, but it must be done on each PC, in the control center > configuration > second tab. I set it up under the first tab, and the scans continued to come over as JPEGs, not quite sure what was changing under that first tab and the instuctions are nill.Load the pages in the Auto Document Feeder (ADF), face down, top first, hit the scan button > select FILE, OCR, IMAGE or X > select the PC you want to send to > GO > Start ((black or color)(Brother could improve the process by adding a programmable macro button). Within seconds it's on your desktop. If you don't want to deal with renaming and sorting right away, it's right there in the control center folder for later processing. This may all be old news to many, for me the only systems that have this capability are very expensive, require licensing on each workstation and much configuration. No more saving paper bills, tax records, medical records, etc.. So much easier than always wanting to have done it with a scanner but never did because it was such a hassle to get the paper on the glass, scan, open, crop and print to PDF.Can't tell much about photo scanning, I did scan one at low resolution (default)and it seemed okay, not as good as my Epson flatbed, I'll have to tweak the settings and see what happens. If I ever get to scanning in our 1000's of family pics I would either use this or get a dedicated photo scanner with a feeder, very cheap these days.Printing from the PC is flawless. The printer shuts down after 10 min by default. In many tests the thing has awakened, did its' duty and gone back to sleep. Word documents are perfect. I printed an Aniversary card on plain paper using Brother's free online creative center. The quality was just fine for the Clark Howard kind of guy I am.We don't fax but for a couple of times a year, but being able to do it from the PC without a printed copy is a good thing.I can't speak for ink usage, but I purchased 30 cartridges for 40 on auction "buy it now" If the after market ink ends up killing it, SO WHAT. 30 OEM cartridges would buy how many new printers? My Epson Photo R200 ran for many years on aftermarket ink till it recently died. I loved the Epson too but HATED their cartridges with the built in chips; it was always a hassle getting the thing to work with anything but Epson ink. Unlike the Epson and others, the Brother cartridges install from the front of the printer, you don't have to repeatedly push the ink button and wait on the carriage to go back and forth to put in a new cartridge. The great thing in common whith both printers is having separate color cartridges. In years of printing, never did all colors run out at the same time. It may be easier to have one color cartridge, but you're tossing your cash in the trash. As for whinning about washed out colors, etc.., what are people using this printer for anyway? The colors on standard paper are good, great for the kid's homework assignments. As for printing photos, upload them and print them at the drugstore, save yourself lot of money on ink and photo paper. You can't break even printing photos at home unless you print many more than the normal person on a regular basis. I printed a photo from my SD card (which by the way is very cool, the printer's LCD displays the images from the card) onto years old cheap photo paper, it was very good as a proof, good enough for Grandma. My 3 kids are using this thing without me having to get involved at all. I love it, if it dies, I'll buy another Brother(that is unless they get the courts to shut down the aftermarket manufacturers like Espon did). I just hope it gives me 3 good years.

I bought this printer a while back to replace another Brother MFC model that had quit working after like 5 years. I liked the oversize scanning/printing ability and the wired network feature of the 5890. The LCD display panel was a nice touch.I bought it new and guess I've had it for maybe 2 years- I couldn't find a date of manufacture by the serial number. Recently, the black and color ink was low, so I used a compatible cartridge for all 4. The black never printed correctly, being very faint at first, while the colors worked perfectly. This was after a cleaning cycle. I replaced the black ink with a second cartridge and there was no black ink at all. Even a factory black cartridge did not work, and the black output is now zero. Perhaps the aftermarket black ink cartridge torpedoed my MFC. If so, it is the first one to do so (I've used ink from this company before in other printers), and I find it odd only the black cartridges are a problem.Further reading on the problem revealed I'm not the only one this has happened to. Here is a technician's response to another no black ink problem:From the symptoms you are getting, its quite evident that the print heads are worn out with usage or have clogged totally. If the printer is in warranty then you should get it repaired by Brother for free. Else you will have to send it to Brother for paid repair. To be very honest, these print heads are made of poor quality so that you need to replace them and Brother can make money. That's why they sell cartridges at cheaper cost.In reading reviews for my next printer, I see Brother at best made the bottom of one list and was not on the other, so this will be my last Brother for a while.

We have had this printer for about 4 years and have had NO problems. Yes it does demand that all ink colors have some ink in them before it will print, but that is minor compared to the job it does and the workload it has handled for our home. We have used it for our home school printing needs, printing pictures, and for printing everyday items as well. In the years that we have owned it, I think it has had a total of 3 paper jams that were my fault for not having the paper placed correctly.I have sent MANY faxes on this machine and received them as well.... never had problems with this feature either.Overall, I would buy it again and highly recommend it to everyone!!

I sqeezed the life out of this as long as I could. I'm tired of false paper jam messages, having to remove the back cover just to make the message go away. no printing because the machine thinks the cover is open, figuring out that if I wedge a piece of paper inside, the open cover message won't come on. I'm tired of having to remove the paper tray because constant reinsertion finally causes the ink cover to open which eventually has to be taped closed because the machine won't print with it open. I'm tired of it printing in green only even though all the colors are inside. It had one great feature though. I could buy ink for it on ebay for a couple dollars. It delivered me one last fatal error message that said not in so many words that it needed to be opened up and fixed so I said goodbye, it boarded the next dumpster and we parted ways.

This is a great cheap all in one inkjet. It's print quality for most things is very good. It wouldn't be my first choice for photos, but for copies, cards, fliers, etc... it's really pretty good. Generic ink for this thing is dirt cheap (around $10-$12 for a set of 4blk and 2 of each color, here on amazon). Caught a deal, so the printer itself didn't cost me but $35 (after MIR) with a labeler and a set of headphones. There are drivers for this printer up through Win7-64(what I'm using it on), which at the time I purchased it, was rare for cheap inkjet all in ones. It should also be noted that an updated firmware for it is on brothers website. I'm using the USB now, but for a short while, I had it networked, and it had no problems. The document feeder is a solid performer as well. Another thing to mention, is that the only way to turn off the fax, is to turn off the printer completely, or disconnect it from the phone line. Otherwise, it will answer the phone after a set number of rings(0 - 4). (I guess it's psychic, because answering after 0 rings is an option. *_*) There is no option to turn off the auto answer. As I only rarely care about sending a fax, I leave mine disconnected from the phone most of the time.It would also have been really nice if the lcd screen was back lit, even just a cheap single led. You can however plug a cheap little flexible usb led light into it's front usb port, and twist it over to the screen though. Which I was doing until I moved it to somewhere with better lighting. To explain the software part of my rating. Brother's own software works very well. I would give it a 4/5. The Scansoft Paperport 11 included with it, however, does not. I'd rate it a 2/5. So I averaged it to 3/5 for software. One of paperport's main functions seems to be scanning directly into adobe pdf files. Which is great until you close the app. It will crash trying to read it's own files, unless you move them from where the software places them, before you run it again. Which makes it's cataloging functions worthless. Why use it then, you might ask, well brothers software can only automatically scan a stack of documents from the feeder into one single pdf. If you want say a stack of receipts, each automatically scanned to it's own file, you have to use the paperport or buy some other app.The one real complaint I would have, is that it cleans itself more than a friggin cat. Those complaining, "I'm not printing anything, where is all the ink going?", you're going to bed too early. The real magic happens at 2am. That's when this little printer springs to life, spending anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes each night, happily cleaning away at it's print heads, before going back to bed(sleep mode). Also FYI, it comes with starter cartridges. i.e. tanks filled with just enough ink to test that the printer works, before you need to buy more. No big deal to me, with cheap generics out there, but it's something to be aware of.Overall, it suits my purposes pretty well. Your smileage may vary.

I had been an HP OfficeJet buyer for ... oh, must be more than a decade now. Their scanners never (truly, never) worked correctly for me, and I always felt that there must be a better product. So when my last OfficeJet failed, I searched intensively for a replacement with features that were comparable or superior to HP. I landed on this Brother machine.Pros first: The size of the machine is great. It is a handsome unit. It is marvelously affordable. And it multi-functions adequately well. It is clear that Brother is trying very hard to compete well in this market. They're so close, I hope they finally get to greatness in the multi-function arena. But they're not there yet.Cons next: 1) The unit has two feed trays, which I like very much. And the unit has duplex printing, which I also like very much. BUT ... you can only duplex-print from the low-capacity paper tray, not the typical go-to tray for average letter-size stock. No, it is the tray logically used for #10 envelopes that offers duplex printing! See, I like to have envelopes always loaded and ready in one tray, and a fat stack of 8.5x11 in the other tray. I know what you're thinking ... use the high capacity tray for envelopes and the low-capacity tray for letter-size paper. Nope, their high-capacity tray does not provide guides for feeding envelopes. What a disappointment! And what an R&D gaff! 2) I generally use either 20lb or 24lb paper stock; and darn it, at less than one year old, these paper feeders are frequently drawing several pages at once from the drawer. So what happens when you "manual duplex"? You got it ... the machine ruins the entire batch. I just burned half a color cartridge re-doing two fouled print batches! Argh! 3) Unlike the good ol' HP OfficeJets, there is no convenient manual paper-feed tray. Want to use specialty paper for a specific print job? You must pull the tray and load your stock manually. I know .. lazy, lazy, lazy. But my old HP provided that feature, and I never realized how much I used it (and how much I'd miss it) until I no longer have it. 4) The operating software for the machine is utilitarian but not feature-full. And lastly, 5) the touchscreen interface on the unit itself, while it is very easy to navigate and interpret, is not always easy to read as it does not seem to have a glare shield. There you have it. When this machine is doing what it is supposed to do, it works very well. But being slight of features and occasionally going haywire, I think I am being generous with a three-star rating.

On January 11, 2011 bought from Amazon a Brother 6890 CDW. Price was good (paid $299.00 on amazon sale), packaging was good, amazon delivered quickly and setup was okay. Bought the 6890 to to do a 7 page, 11 by 17 two sided sheet membership directory that we folded in half and stapled as a booklet. Got it all set up, then printed guinea pig 2 sided sheets on letter, legal and ledger size paper, no problems. One each 11 by 17 two sides took 81 seconds. Putting in paper, we did notice how flimsy the plastic trays seemed. Gotta handle those puppies with TLC or they will break I'm pretty sure. Then I noticed the black ink and color ink seemed to be washed out. Assumed I did something wrong, reset print quality from normal to fine to vivid. No noticeable difference. Did it three times, sometimes 1 sided, sometimes 2 sided. Same results, washed out. Black ink looked gray, colors looked washed out. Red color for headings almost not visible. Wife gets involved, says we need to clean the inkjet print heads. Now the fun part. No print heads to clean. They are "ink spray nozzles" that spray the ink onto the paper. Interesting. I missed that in the brother specs. Ok, I read the manual (which btw is half size black ink only... you will need a magnifying glass to read...I kid you not), anyway, I cleaned the nozzle spray heads 5 times repeat 5 times as suggested by the manual. EZ cleaning process ... it is done from the menu. Reprinted various guinea pig sheets, color quality still no better. It is obvious Brother knows about this problem to say clean the spray nozzles five times. Tried to call support, hung up after 45 minutes on hold.We are very frustrated. We never gave the black and color ink quality any thought. We have two other Brother HL-5140 printers and a brother fax machine. no problems. We assumed because of Brother name and past experience with the other equipment that we wouldn't have any issues with the 6890. We finally did the membership booklets on a friends HP8150 laser printer in black ink. Our organization was very disappointed in the black ink only booklet but it's all we could do with Brother 6890CDW looking so terrible. Maybe we expected too much, I don't know.In summary, we are going to try and return the printer if possible. We bought it January 11, 2011. It is now March 22, 2011 as I write this. We have 72 sheets printed per the page count menu. If they won't take it back, I guess we'll use it as a draft only printer. We haven't used the copy machine fax or scanner cababilities yet. Bottom line, IMO, the print quality is bad. Washed out is the only word I can think of to describe it.

This printer is garbage. It's slow, ink is outrageously expensive and doesn't last, and I've had two of them take a crap on me in the past month. The first one I bought wouldn't print black at all. Replaced the cartridge, still didn't work. The store where I bought it wouldn't take it back. Brother told me the printer head was faulty and I had to send it in and got a replacement. Two days after I received the new machine, it quit printing black too. Test pages would show all colors, no black. Oh, and after running it through its cleaning process 3 times it was out of ink. Brother recommended doing it five times. Colors are about $10 each and the black is more than $20. Not just the worst printer, but the worst piece of computer related hardware I have ever purchased.

I will never buy another brother product again as the company are dishonest. I would buy another machine but unplugging the machine between uses does work in conserving ink. In 3 years we have been through 4 ink packages and printed about 20 pages. Three of the four ink cartridges were required because of my husband being lazy and not unplugging the machine after using it.

I can't be more blunt about exactly how much I hate this printer. I "upgraded" in the hopes of being able to offer my customers a more consistent, awesome product. I'd say that was accomplished maybe a half dozen times. From then on every experience with this thing is a lesson in frustration, lost work time, wasted paper and ink. The chances of getting a successful print on the first go are less than 10%. Sometimes it mishandles the ink levels. Sometimes it decided to print across 4 pieces of paper. Sometimes it decides there is a paper jam when it hasn't fully loaded the paper in the first place. And sometimes it just spits out blanks and tells me the print job is done. This heavy, inconvenient beast does nothing to speed up my business. It slows me down and now just costs me money. If it wasn't so expensive I'd take the thing out back OfficeSpace style and then burn the pieces into a pile of plastic goo. I can say, unequivocally, that this office will never give another Brother printer a home.

I bought the Brother MFC-6890-CDW last fall (8 months ago) because it offered so many features during a special sale of $219.1. It was easy to set up, but the trays are somewhat flimsy. It is big and heavy, which is good as when it prints it is difficult to feel it shaking while a competitor top of the line model was visibly shaking. Overall, the body is well made.2. The first project was to print off 11X17 copies of a multi-colored chart from a scanned copy. It did an excellent job because of what I did under #3.3. The other reviews are correct that the colors are washed out. I have an iMac and use their printer/scanner dialog box. Checking off best print quality and vivid color gives pretty good color rendition. Anything less looks somewhat light or washed out.4. The color cartridges are smaller and hold less ink than the MFC-440 of which worked extremely well for four years until it died. However, the ink cartridges appear to last an adequate amount of time.5. The multi-touch screen on the computer is a little awkward to use - not sure what some of the features mean. There are two manuals - one that comes with the printer and the scanner portion is online. Documentation is one area that can be improved on.6. This is not a photo printer. As an pro-am camera enthusiast, the quality is poor.7. I like the dual side printing feature, but on the Mac, it only works through Preview. With that it does an excellent job.8. Sometimes on Fast Normal setting, the print on a line or two slants.9. Does a good job scanning moderate size books, just don't force down the paper feeder - just let it rest on the book.10. I was not able to figure out how to enlarge print in terms of where to place the paper on the glass. Several pictorial examples in the manual would help. This MFC currently costs $339 and I would not buy it given the reviews and my experience, but at $219 last fall it was a great bargain and serves my printing and scanning needs very well. It works extremely well with ABBY Fine Reader Express. Overall, the Brother MFC 6890CDW is a great deal with some rough edges. If money is a priority, I would wait for it to go on sale again.
