I was happy to buy this macinne. I prefer separate inks, I wanted a scanner, I don't use the fax. Very soon I started having problems. The worst thing it does is suck the paper back and then declare "Paper Jam" which involves opening the back , and then I often have to do it more than once.Also it will only take thin paper, so if I want to do labels it gives me trouble. I also don't like the fact that if any ink runs out, it will not print, not even in Black.I am getting rid of this as soon as I can find one I like to repace it.I think I'll go back to Canon.

i've printed a couple of photos on this thing already as well as having used the copy function and just printing regular old stuff. i'm very happy with the printer. i've got it hooked up via a cat 5 cable into my router and all my computers in the house can print via the network. the setup was seamless. great product!

This is my first all-in-one, so I don't have a reference point with which to compare. However, I printed a photo on glossy paper and the machine produced what appears to me is an almost exact copy of the original digital image, something very close to what I'd expect from a photo lab. Text printing is not as fine as the laser printer I own, but it displays very well nonetheless. The copier and fax functions also work very well, and the controls are very easy to use. I can't imagine any other all-in-ones operating even slightly better than this extremely reasonably priced machine. I'm extremely satisfied with this product.

I'm sorry to have to write a negative comment, but the Brother co. deserves it. Most of the bad reviews above are true. I will add one more: it is a pain to print envelopes with this printer, IF you can print them at all. I visited the Brother website to get help with the issue, but no luck, Their suggestions did not fix the problem. The stories about the ink cartridges are true, as well as the constant self-cleaning. I did like the fax/scanner capabilities, but I will never buy a Brother product again.Sorry Brother, you should have fixed the problem before putting this thing out there.

I previously had a Samsung Laser that was dirt cheap and quite small. A piece on a paper tray broke off and it could not be fixed, so that meant that it would detect that no paper was in the tray!I purchased this and plugged it in and it worked on the first try. I run a small business and this is what I use. I don't print out a ton of documents, maybe 15-20 sheets a day.I've never had any driver issues. I've had maybe one or two printer jams and in over a year and a half that's not that bad. They were with some generic labels.This thing is fast and quite. It's very reliable and nothing really fancy. I was actually very surprised when I heard all the negative reviews on this print!

I bought this machine solely for sending fax and scanning. I rarely made copies using this machine since I have a Samsung ML-1450 Laser (the best laser for the money, had it for 2.5 yr and it's still running). Now after several months I began hearing beeping noise and it turned out that my black ink is running very low and now 3 -4 weeks after, all my inks are about as low as my black. In one occassion I heard that the machine was doing self cleaning although it was on off positon, and I suspect that function may have drained the rest of the ink. Now when I turn the machine on it makes this annoying beep. It looks like to me that Brother is trying to rip off people by making a machine that consumes ink whether you're using it or not. This machine is a total piece of crap, now after I refused to refill the ink, it begin giving another signal that the cover is open. Prior to buying this Brother, I was already warned by my cousin who owned similar machine but higher version to avoid it at all costs, after his printing nozzle jammed all the time. But I thought that I only gonna be sending faxes and rarely print, besides the price was unbelievably good, so what the heck. Oh boy was I wrong, this is the worst ink sucking machine that can operate in off or on position. So if you own this machine you better unplug it or it'll run by itself to do this autopilot thing. I will not buy any BROTHER machine...their laser sucks as well (if they don't get you on the price of the ink, they'll surely get you to replace their very expensive drum). AND DON"T BUY ANY LEXMARK INKJETS, it took me 3 LEXMARK inkjets to finally figured out that they were ripping me off with their ink that's why I switched to Samsung LASER.

Works as advertised (except for print speed: you only get the rated speed if you set the print quality to low - get a laser printer if you need speed).Both printing and scanning work over the network. Have not had any problems with this over the past 8 months. Fax works great too.Meant for light home usage only - paper jam occurs if I print too many pages in one go. Other reviewer's comments about ink usge are probably true (inkejects in general are more expensive to operate than laser printers) - so this printer really is for light usage.

I bought one and it never worked right. Bought it at Office Depot, they would not replce after 30 days, so I shipped to Brother and they sent me another- it didn't work right either. My guess is the networking setup just doesn't work. Can't scan, or print labels or envelopes.Called Brother back and they wouldn't do anything more, so I just had to replace at my own cost

I have always bought HP printers in the past, because I thought they were the best overall quality.I had a PSC model which was always problematic connecting to my Mac. Many times it would not recognize my Mac so printing was hit or miss.My next one i bought was an HP 5110 multifuction (with a sheet feeder, no flatbed). It was pretty good, but had printer errors. the printer kept displaying a paper jam and would not respond to anything i tried. the physical moving parts seemed to still work, but i could no longer use it. That was only 15 mos or so of heavy use, so it was a disappointment but i learned to not invest real money into printers, as they seem to be rather disposable.I had never before considered Brother; i felt that they were a cheaper line like Lexmark or something, even if they seemed to give more features for the price.However with this MFC 5440, I think the build quality of the printer is far better than the HP 5510 multifunction which is comparable. The HP seemed flimsy on the flatbed parts. The brother seems sturdier overall.The software installation was very easy, much faster than installing the large HP software. I have Mac OSX. at first it seemed as if installation didn't quite finish, but the printer was still recognized and everything was set to print. And I was able to print my first pages immediately. That was not the case with HP software.The only issue i see is that the copy function is super slow, especially if using normal or best quality. the draft mode is decently fast, so you really should stick to that mode for copying. The printing is pretty fast in normal mode. I think paper quality definitely will help the crispness of the print. i mainly print for my own reference, so I'm not picky, but if you need to make more professional documents, you need a quality paperstock. I haven't scanned yet.And I don't have a home network, but it's nice to know how useful this will prove if i add any computers.I think for the price, this is a definite YES. even if it breaks in a year or two, it won't seem like such a money drain. all the sales people seem to push brothers at Staples, mainly due to the low cost of replacing the indiv. ink cartridges.

I want to throw this printer out the window. When I first got it, I would have given it a high star rating. I was impressed with the price and quality. After maybe 2 months the problems began. I constantly get "paper jam" BS, can't get the fax to work on it. About all its good for now is scanning. Waste of money if you need something to last more than a couple months.

This is an excellent printer/scanner/fax for the money. I had purchased this as a replacement to an extremely problematic HP 5110.Install: Installation was extremely easy. Just follow the directions and everything works within about 30 minutes. I really can't stress enough how easy it was to setup this printer. Whether you set it up with a standard USB connection or ethernet/network, the software does everything for you and the software install only takes around 5 minutes.Software: The software is really simple and easy to use. The downside to this is that it is somewhat too simple. For advanced users that want more options and customizability, they wont find it here. Also, having the preset scan buttons is a little annoying if you like to change your scan options a lot.I should also note that you can scan/copy things using either your computer or the buttons on the unit. This is very very smooth and allows you do be able to scan things without having to navigate to the ControlCenter on your PC. If you set up the printer on the network it will also even allow you to pick which PC to send the files to.Printer: Print quality is right on for this price range. This is not a photo printer, but nevertheless printing onto photo quality paper isnt bad. But at the prices you can get digital photos developed at Walmart or Target nowadays, it doesnt really matter.Scanner: Scan quality is great, scans up to 6000x1200 DPI. Even 300x300 DPI looks great.Fax: Unfortunately, I cannot comment on this as I have no reason to fax anyone. But if the scan/print quality is any indication, this would work seamlessly as well.Ink: This printer uses individual C/M/Y/K cartridges. So when one color runs out, you only have to replace that color. The size of the ink cartridges is pretty big, too, so they last longer. The downside to this is that the print head is not replaceable since they are not part of the print cartridges. So you pretty much have to replace the entire printer when it goes out.Networking: Another GREAT reason to buy this product is that is comes with built-in networking. This is completely unheard of in other brands in this price range and greatly adds to the value of this printer. You can set it up for wireless use or wire it directly to your router/hub. You can also scan images in and send it to any computer on your network ... directly from the printer!Price: This is in the $ 100-150 price range, which is more or less the low range for AIO printers. In this range, you pretty much have to choose from Lexmark, HP and Brother. Lexmark printers in this range are really cheap and their ink cartridges are overpriced. HP is very problematic, have smaller ink cartridges and are also overpriced. Overall, Brother is the best buy.Overall: I'm in love. Not only is this the best printer for the money, but this is a GREAT printer/scanner PERIOD. After this experience all my future printers will be Brother brand. I will never buy Lexmark/HP/etc ever again.

i got this printer not too long ago, this has to be the most poorly constructed printer. I only use it to scan and make copies. I only use black and white, because I'm that cheap! Now it's telling me to replace ALL 3 color cartriage! WTF, I have never print anything under color mode, never! All 3 cartraiges are still half empty btw. I called customer support and they were being stupid and told me that it is normal. I will never buy a Brother product again in my life.

I have to laugh reading the bad reviews, some are just insane like "don't do anything else while installing the software" and totally misleading "have to replace all ink cartridges" - nonsense, I've replaced the black 3 times and have yet to replace any color, maybe you have to replace all colors at same time (makes sense) but at the cost of $5 each compared to some printers at $20-$40 each this printer is an ink miser.The other funny posts are the paper tray issues. It slides in and out. Should you shove it hard? Should you fill the paper tray to the very top? Come on, how about a little common sense. I use 3 weights of paper and two kinds of labels, no problemo.Then there's the ones who run the printer like a $1,000 business printer and wonder why it doesn't last... Gimmea a break, if your business was hauling dirt and you filled a 1/2 ton truck with 3/4 ton all the time how long would the truck last compared to a 3/4 ton truck? Again common sense people.I use it connected to my Router/Modem via ethernet. I can access it with my Mac G5 desktop, my wife's Mac Mini and my IBM ThinkPad (via wireless) and when my brother visits about every other month he prints via his iBook and my sister with her HP Win-XP laptop.Show me a better deal for home, home-small-office, student. I dare you.

My Brother MFC has been sitting in attic for over a year now. As other reviewers have mentioned the printer won't even print black ink document if printer is out of any other color ink. Other than this another big problem is the printhead. If you ever need to change printhead which you will over time (in many cases less than a year), it may cost you twice the price of new printer and then labor extra as its a dealer only item. I have been through all this. After lots of research I bought a LEXMARK X1185, I am very satisfied with it. I can print a black ink document even without inserting a color ink cartiage. The other big + is that in Lexmark printers the printhead is part of ink cartiage. For over a year I have been refilling the same black ink cartiage that came with the machine, and so far it has been working perfectly, the day this printhead gets clogged I'll buy another ink cartiage and it will have printhead on it. And my printer will be kind of new all over again. Update..April 2010...For over a year now I have bought and been using SAMSUNG ML-2510 MONO LASER PRINTER. For under 50 bucks I find it to be a A+ laser printer. Toner ink for the same is very cheap and can be bought from eBay.

Okay, I'll admit it. I bought this with the idea that it had a lot of functions at a great price. Unfortunately, other than looking kind of cute and being a decent copier/printer (not great, just decent), this machine is a dud! It is nearly impossible to read the panel display unless either you or the MFC-210C are situated at an unusual angle (and I am NOT exaggerating), the fax machine AND the scanner are ridiculously complicated to use and instead of having an easily accessible owner's manual, you're stuck with the cheaper to distribute CD. And when you do access the owner's manual/user's guide it's so darn complicated and hard to understand that you'll wish you'd bought a book on pathology instead. Sure, if you take the time you can figure it all out, but let's face it, in today's fast-paced world, why should you have to?In short, you get what you pay for and frankly, I didn't get much.

I love the fact that this faxes quickly and efficiently, and that it makes black and color copies, but takes up not much more space than a fax machine. I have just tested the color copy feature today for the first time, and I am pleased. It is fast and sharp. You can fax multiple pages without having to separate pages or have pages go through together as was the case with a fax machine that I owned for only a few weeks due to its poor feeding problem. I don't know about color faxes, so I'm not sure if I would ever use that feature. It's just a nice compact desktop way of having fax and copying options virtually at your fingertips. The unit is well-designed and appears to be well-built. I am using this fax/copier in a home office primarily for faxing out and making copies. I use a fax service from innoport.com for incoming faxes that are delivered to my email.Since I wrote this, I have had an a vertical black line on all incoming faxes,and black and white and color copies. I am going to attempt to clean the scanner glass per the instructions of technical support. The other frustrating thing is that the bar that rolls the paper through the machine is very tight, so it can get jammed at times, but on the plus side, this machine feeds sheets of paper usually fairly well. A mixed bag - sorry I can't change my review to 3.5 stars. The color copy quality (aside from the vertical line) is very good and rivals that of an inkjet printer. The features for enlarging, reducing and changing tone and contrast are also very intuitive and helpful. It also is a very fast copier in black mode.

This is my first non-HP printer and I am very impressed. The print quality on B&W text seems slightly less than HP, but marginally to the point of "who cares". Color comes out wonderfully. However, the best part was the ease of setting it up and the software...including Paper Port. My wife and I both share this printer on a network and the printer and software is designed for use on a network, unlike other products. Very cool. The software is easy to use and simple. Both the printer and software does what it is supposed to do, without all the extra unneeded stuff other manufacturers jam in there. I love this printer...especially for the price.

I have owned this thing for about a year and a half. i have even used generic cartridges. this has worked flawlessly as a stand alone and computer based multifunction machine. The lcd is a little hard to read...(could be bigger and brighter) and yes i adjusted the contrast. do not expect great color photos..it isn't bad, but what do you expect for 80.00. fax works well and scans are pretty good. usb card reader should allow option to disable if not using. Also card reader should be high speed. Small footprint makes this a must if you have limited space. you cannot go wrong with this mfc, especially for the price. I have seen some poor reviews for this machine. (i say read the manual and learn how to use it before you complain0 also, don't forget how much this thing costs. When comparing to another printer..please take this into consideration..you will not be dissapointed.

This printer is excellent and the best for the price.Pros: This one has all the features includes fax,print, scan and copy. Very easy to use and they have separate installation guide which tells you step by step how to install the printer when you buy it. I have to say that color printing is the best in this printer. But the white and black print quality is not that good as laser printer. But you cannot notice the difference unless you see it very closely. It faxes, scans and copies very well.Cons: may be it is a little bit noisy but not too much and it prints very slowly..but who cares if it prints what I need and the way I need it.I just have this for about a month and I really like it and highly recommend this product.

I've had this machine for a little over a year, and I'm really, really tired of buying ink for this hog when there's still ink left in the cartridge. I hardly ever print color, and the cartridges STILL manage to empty themselves regularly somehow. If one cartridge registers empty, you're simply out of luck - the printer won't function. I'm not even going to give it to someone, lest I be thought of unkindly when THEY discover that it requires regular feeding whether it's used or not (and the cartridges are definitely not cheap)...

I've had this printer for about 6 weeks and have been happy with it's faxing and printing capabilities. However, when it runs out of ink, it doesn't seem possible to refill the cartridges as I have with most other printers so be prepared to shell out $60+ to replace all the ink carts. No generic carts are available for this one as of now.UPDATE: according to the comments, apparantly there are generic cartridges available now. When I originally wrote the review there weren't any. But I did figure out how to refill them (snap the cartridge in two at the seem, poke a needle into the clear plastic inside, fill with ink, tape over whole and tape up the cartridge).

I have owned this machine for about 5 months or so. The MFC-210C should not be compared to professional office equipment. This piece of equipment should be judged on the basis of it being in the category of "Home-Office" equipment; in other words, light-duty. My wife and I bring a lot of work home and do a lot of volunteer work that requires faxing, copying and scanning. The machine works like a champ. Perhaps the best hundred bucks I ever spent. Two minor complaints; (1) The ink cartridges are a little expensive and (2) When my computer goes into sleep mode (2005 XP Media Center Edition) the machine refuses to print and I have to restart my computer. Neither of these disadvantages are fatal, just minor annoyances. If you need a good, inexpensive light-duty multifunction machine, The MFC-210C is a solid choice.

I own a Brother MFC-3820CN, which I believe is the predecessor to the model presented on this page. I just wanted to alert potential buyers to a problem that I encountered and which many reviewers here may not have had a chance to experience.First of all, I am a very light user and chose the Brother because of the network-able feature and because of the price. I really never used it very much and had problems with the ink from the beginning. Most recently, I replaced the ink because it was showing the empty ink message. Even after replacing the ink cartridges, the error message still shows. The problem is that the machine doesn't work at all with the error message showing. I could not even send a fax even though doing so requires no ink. The machine will not revert to black and white if one cartridge is empty--it just won't work. I really am not going to spend the money (about half the cost of the machine) required to replace the cartridges again. I called the help line and the response I got was that the representative was sorry and could refer me to a service center. As most of you are aware, the price of a new one really makes having one serviced a non-starter so I was left somewhat dissatisfied by the whole experience.

I've used Brother products for several years. This is my latest acquisition. I've printed about 3000 pages (just replaced the original toner cartridge). For an economical printer it is nothing short of super. As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, there may be a problem with paper curling. Changing to a better quality paper solved the problem for me.

This copier is much slower than expected. It also doesn't copy thicker paper very well. It jams when we try to copy on two sides. It curls after copying the first side, then we have to wait a long time and flatten the paper before we can copy the other side.The quality of the copies are good.

As a novelist, I needed a good clean printer and scanning center and preferred it to take up little room, have multiple ink cartridges so I can save money when needing to change colored ink, and wanted a reliable brand. I didn't have a lot to spend to start off with. (Writers don't make the best of money for the most part.) For the price and the quality, the Brother has excelled for me. It was easy to set up, changing the ink is simple, and I've yet to have a paper jam. Kudos, Brother.

I use it mostly as a printer and got maybe 300-400 pages printed before it ran out of black ink. As the other reviewers mentioned, it does a self-cleaning thing every so often. This is somewhat of a double-edged sword because on the one hand I have never wasted time doing test pages and cleaning cycles, but on the other hand it does use some ink each time.Using ink doesn't really bother me too much because I just paid $13 shipped for 2 black cartridges and 1 of each color on ebay for a total of 5. The price shocked me since I owned a Lexmark Z55 previously and "retired" it when I found out new ink was going to cost almost the same price as this unit brand new WITH ink.The quality of color prints is really good, hard to tell from store developed photos. I've used the copy function a hand full of times and it seems to work well. As for the fax, never tried it. Memory card reader is nice if you don't have one already.Overall, if you can get a good deal on this printer, grab a couple extra ink cartridges because you will probably need them (the included ones lasted 8 months for me). For an extra $20 or so you'll have an awesome little combo machine with a couple year supply of ink.4 stars because of the ink issue.

This is my second HL 5140. I bought the first for my dental office and it worked well. Quality and reliability is good. I've just bought another one for my second office. Very happy with performance. Overall a good value and replacement toner is also reasonable.

I recently purchased this product. Honestly i'm a hp fan, i think that if your really need a printer that prints quailty than hp is your best answer. Anyway, this product isen't that bad, for a hundred dollar product. So far printing is good, scanning is also good. However, photo printing is average. The only other thing that you have to worry about is INKKKKKK.

I use my multi-function printer for my home/office. It prints great and quickly in color and black. The speed is great for my usage. The scanned images are also great. I found it relatively easy to install and the price was awesome!!! The price here on Amazon was $50 lower than what I would have paid with Dell for this exact same printer. I am definitely getting my money's worth. I like it much better that the Canon-Multipass that I had. Highly recommended.

Print quality and print speed seem very good for a relatively low-priced black and white laser printer.My biggest complaint is that this printer sucks a lot of power when initially powering up to print. I have it connected through a surge protector with battery backup, although it is in the "surge protection only" plug of the protector. Every time I print the surge protector thinks the power is going out and briefly kicks into battery backup mode (it makes a beep). Other people in my office experience the same problem with this printer. One person reported noticable dimming of their lights when starting to print.

This All in Printer is the best that I have used. Even given its strange way of reporting empty cartridges and the somewhat complex procedure to reset the sensor and dot counter.Well worth the money and has lots of features for the bucks.

I bought this printer back in February 2005 and it has been the biggest ink hog ever. I buy a lot of printers for my business, but I really needed an all in one that had a good automatic scanner and would print photos from my memory card. Out of the box, it is a super thrill - it works great, it looks good, it prints great pictures and it scans fast and trouble free. The biggest down side to this printer is the way it senses the ink levels in the cartridges. It allegedly is an ink dot counter but that's not true it really has a light sensor and when your ink cartridge is about half full, you get an out of ink message and the machine will not do a thing. Even if all you want to do is scan, you can't even get the machine to turn off. It's incredible that an "empty" ink cartridge would lock up the machine, but that's how Brother wanted it apparently. The only way to get it to work again is to put in a new ink cartridge. Since Brother's ink cartridges are not "full" when you buy them, you really get very little printing from the cartridge. Seems like no one at Brother will tell you how to fix this problem, they talk to you like "whats the problem?" In the meantime, I'm replacing those little ink cartridges every month and every time the "empty" cartridge is half full. A couple of times the cartridges looked nearly full. If you print on a regular basis - you are going to spend a fortune on ink. Even with the remanufactured cartridges.I finally figured out how to get around the light sensor. But I am moving this machine to occassional use only and scanning - and I'm getting my secretary a laser MFC machine. You can bet it won't be another Brother though.

I am renowned for my inability to fathom anything IT related. I am also a fan of anything that's user-friendly. The MFC210C is perfect for me. I use the machine occasionally and I do not expect miracles from a $100 machine as other reviewers, who probably print everything they touch, do. I admit the scanner is hard work, but it works. The printer is fine; the copier and fax too.I am most impressed by the simplicity with which an IT illiterate, like me, can set the machine going. Load the CD and off you go. This machine is child's play and I have fewer problems (so far none, in fact) than the office fax and photocopier machines.If I could get the same machine in England for the same price, I would award 5 stars.

Do not buy this printer. Do not buy this printer. Do not buy this printer. I've had to reinstall it every other week! It's too frustrating to even explain... you do not want to be this angry at an inanimate object. Just avoid it at all cost. I wouldn't even take it if it were free!

The product works okay in fax, print and copy modes. The scanner will not function. I called Brother support, went thru the drill and was told that this was being escalated to the next level and I would receive a call back the next day. After waiting at home for 2 days, I called Brother again. This time they were able to contact the next level, I went back thru the drill, added a number of new steps and was told that it would need to be escalated to level 7 (?) and I would be called back in the next 2 days. Again I waited at home for 2 days with no call back. I emailed them, received an email back promising that I would be called in the next 2 days. Again waited and no call. Another email, promised same day. No call. I sent a final email stating that I would be writing this review if I received no call back. NO email or call. If you get a working product, it may be a good deal, but if you have any problems, you will receive nothing but empty promises and have a non working machine. Scanning is the function I use most often on this computer, so I have to buy another product, which will not be another Brother.

Purchased this machine about 6 months ago. It worked great until about 2 weeks ago. The red ink stopped printing. The Brother repair shop thinks it's either a bad print head or a faulty circuit board- he's unsure as to which...Yes, it's covered under warranty, but I'm reluctant to keep it after repairs. I probably printed less than 2 reams of paper before the problem started. Fax works very good; Scanner works OK but the paper port software is mickey mouse. B&W copy speed on best quality is slow, on normal quality it's slightly better. I will probably sell on Ebay at a loss, count my blessings and buy the Canon Pixma that I debated on before the Brother purchase.

The MFC 5440CN purported to have all of the features I could want: networked scanning, faxing, and printing at an affordable price. And I could even use it on my Linux system thanks to the drivers from Brother. My hope in this product has been steadily diminished. The scanning still does not work in Linux. Since upgrading the firmware on board, I have lost scanning functionality even in Windows XP. The ink runs out QUICKLY. I run multiple cleaning cycles just to make print-outs legible. Often, entire lines do not print, and the lines that do print have terrible white lines running through the text. If you prefer to spend time using the product rather than troubleshooting it, do not buy this product.

Incredibly poor user's Manual. Nothing on how to use the scanner function (refers you the CD -- most multi-use machines have a very easy to use scanning function -- NOT this one!Paper jams easily.Response time is slow.Printing quality has been the least satisfactory of any I've evwer used. I'm planning to use the rest of the ink supply, toss this machine, and return to a more dependable multi-purpose device brand.

I purchased one on sale ($30 off) and was ecstatic over the hype to get 4 functions from one machine. The excitement fizzled as time after time received the "unable to clean, see troubleshooting"...the kicker is that this occurred during STEP ONE in setup. To make matters worse, the troubleshooting tips on the quick setup and manual said the exact same things and were useless for a setup problem. The onsite troubleshooter FAQs and the email reply from Brother were identical to the other suggestions, again useless! I will never, ever, ever buy anything from Brother. I will stick to HP - which has proven itself over and over.

I bought this printer @ officemax for $53, checked 8-pack inks for $20 on ebay and I printed couple of maps and it worked really nicely. Until one day, I realized it couldnt handle powerpoint of large size (~100mb). I reduced the size into 4mb but it still couldnt handle this job. It is so important to me since I need color slides for my class. I am a bit disapointed despite of the price of it and it's inks.

This would probably be adequate for very low-volume usage. The paper tray doesn't hold very much at a time. The construction is a little flimsy. The machine itself has performed well, but BEWARE... if you have any kind of significant volume, you will pay through the nose on the cartridges because you have to replace the color cartridges whether you use them or not. We are a high-volume department which receives faxes throughout the day. We use this as a black-and-white fax machine only, we do NOT use the color function at all, yet every single time we replace the black cartridge, within the next 3-5 days we have to replace the magenta and cyan!! (We have not yet had to replace the yellow.) In the three months we have had this machine, we have had to replace 10 black, 8 cyan, and 7 magenta cartridges -- almost $400 worth in all -- despite NEVER using the color feature at all. So where's the cyan and magenta ink going??! Apparently, Brother has worked out a way to make it use magenta and cyan along with the black, even if you're not using the color feature.That's the big caveat of this machine. And you must replace the empty magenta and cyan cartridges when prompted, or else the machine will not work. Based on these figures we will spend $1600 this year on cartridges for this machine. That's not a bargain and I would much rather have our old fax-film fax machine back or a plain b/w one that uses toner.

I bought this printer for the price of what most replacement printer cartridges cost ($40). Everything works perfectly. The best bonus is that all 4 replacement cartridges can be purchased online for under $10 total. I've owned the 240cn for almost 2 years and also bought the network capable model MFC 440cn. Both printers use the same inkjet cartridges. Both print, scan, fax, and read memory sticks flawlessly. I've printed photos on plain paper and photo paper, made color and b/w copies. I am pleased with both Brother printers.

(1) Just bought MFC5440CN two days ago, my original concern is about potential problems when installing it on my home network. It turns out the process is very smooth. I will give 5-start on easy installation. I didn't download any new software updates from the web, just use the enclosed CD for installation. (2) Printing speed is OK (not super fast).(3) Copy function is very good. The color copy produces very high quality print-out. (4) Scan function is good too. I can do preview during scan. and I can adjust the size before scan when scanning small size document. (5) The cost of Ink is not a problem to me. I have been refilling the ink for my Canon ink-jet printer for 3 years. MFC5440CN's ink cartrige is very friendly for ink refilling. Just get IMS's ink refill package from Costco. (6) Fax: from the manual, it looks like this machine has plenty of features/settings/options to support various needs in fax. 1/4 of manual is all about fax. I don't use the fax function. No comment on this. (7) Cost: only $80 after officeMax rebate.All and all, I am very happy with this product. Good value for the price.
