I replaced a Lexmarck 1150 that was part of the deal I got on ShopNBC. The brother is the "No Contest" winner here. The Brother gives sharp clear prints. The copy function works without turning on the computer.the FAX works on your regular phone line, no dedicated line needed. I feel this was a great choice for quality and value. I don't know how many miles you get on the four ink cartridges as yet, but I have discovered that EFORCITY sells ink for this and other printers for a mere 3.99 a cartridge and they are not refils, but are new and compatable.With Free shipping from Amazon this printer is a best buy.

I have had this printer for about a month. I purchased it for its scanning and copying capabilities. Both functions have satisfied my expectations. Of course, the printing quality has also been great. The hide-away paper tray was a bonus. I installed this printer with a new Dell PC with a Vista operating system. I encountered no problems with the installation. The ink usage appears to be acceptable for my requirements. Third party ink prices for Brother printers are very reasonable. The combination of the ink usage efficiency and economical ink prices played heavily into my decision to purchase this printer.

I bought this to replace a noisy Lexmark printer which was supposed to have networking (it didn't).Setup was pretty easy, the only small issue was the manual was a version behind the installer software.I set up the printer as a network printer on 4 Windows PCs, no issues with the setup. Also no bloatware like on the HP's. Printed a few test documents, made a couple of copies. Did have one jam, but I may have put too much paper in. It doesn't hold much.This printer is much quieter than the HP and Lexmark MFP I had previously. Initial impression is good, I'll try to come back and do a long term update.

I bought this one and a Lexmark all-in-one at the same time. I hate Lexmark, or so I thought, so I assumed this was the keeper. However, I was wrong. Gripes:1)no multipage scanning into 1 document. I thought the Lexmark had the same problem since it didn't come preinstalled with a pdf output, but once I set it up to scan to acrobat pro, it could scan several pages and output them into a single file. Perfect. This Brother one wouldn't do it no matter how I tried. Each page is it's own pdf. Sort of defeats the document feeder principle if my hands have to do the work elsewhere. BIG PROBLEM.2)won't scan or fax or do ANYTHING else w/out the print cartridges installed. Sounds weird, but if it's a multi-function and one of the functions gives out, or isn't going to be used, the rest should still work.3)REALLY slow head-cleaning process. Won't let you do ANYTHING else while waiting for it. Can't scan, can't fax, must wait.4)bad software - whereas other scanners let you 'scan to application' and let you choose apps, this one has email, file, image and ocr as the only 4 choices.5)is very controlling in general, you don't get many customized choices at all.6)I think the ADF reverses the order of the pages you put it. Wouldn't be that annoying if you could put in more than 10. But if you're scanning a 30page doc and have to stop and manually reorder each of the 3 groups? That once again defeats the time-labor saving principle that anyone who wants a document feeder is going for.7)really noisy after buzz after a scan is done. Takes awhile to shut up.On the good side: ADF didn't seem to jam even with bent pages. Great price, although you get what you pay for. Easy to assemble, lots of features w/on-board card reader. Still, I'd rather have this scary Lexmark or my mom's HP we got her for Xmas than this. The HP software is WAY better, despite the fact I don't really like how babyfied it is. And the Lexmark software allows more flexibility as well. I'm a little disappointed in Brother on this particular model. I wonder if higher models have different software control panels?

Overall the printer is good, but the answering machine crashes twice a week.. I have to restart the whole printer and sometimes I lose a few messages. The CUPS drivers that came with Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) didn't work, I had to install the cups wrapper and use the drivers from Brother's site. I can't get scanning/emailing documents to work in Ubuntu (I'm doing everything over the wireless network so maybe that's why). This is my first all-in-one printer so maybe I expected too much.Update: My printer ran out of magenta ink and now refuses to print at all (including grayscale). I'm disappointed because I only printed a couple of pages in color. I found out that every so often the printer uses up ink in a routine internal testing (to see if it still has ink)? And over time it used up that color. What a waste!

This is a great printer/fax/scanner/copier for the home or home office. The print quality is great, and everything was very simple to set up. The paper tray is relatively small, holding only 100 pages at a time. But you'd need to print a lot of pages for that to be a major concern. Outstanding all-in-one for the price!

First off, I'd just like to say that the review by G. Long "letranger66" below shouldn't even be here. It's a MFC-3820CN, NOT a MFC-5440CN; he should write the review for that product, not this one because the inkjet technology is TWO complete generation apart.The MFC-5440CN uses the latest cartridge design by brother, the LC-51 series, and the ink cartridges fit into a futuristic area on the southeast corner of the printer, completely apart from the actual print head. The printer then sucks the ink through a tubing system to the print head, so the cartridges are always stationary. The LC41 series is similar to the LC31 series of the MFC-3820CN this poor fellow had... DON'T buy any brother inkjets that use the LC-41 or LC-31 cartridge. I had the unfortunate experience of owning a MFC-3220C that used the LC-41 cartridge. The printer broke and was replaced some 6 times. The service depot said that the print heads used in these older printers were very very finicky and will clog up just like that if you use 3rd party inks, and in many cases, even it's own ink! Thankfully, it seems Brother has finally improved their print heads, also increasing their max print resolutions as well.Anyways... Back to this printer.It prints with decent quality, not the fastest and not the slowest either. But, it has the ease of use. I've yet to see any other network printer as easy to use as this one, and allow the full multifunction capabilities through the network.In addition, Brother has excellent drivers for both Windows and Macintosh, both of which run perfectly in my network with this printer (Yes! Brother's drivers are CUPS for Macs!!!). Software included for Windows is my favorite, Scansoft Paperport, which usually costs around 90 dollars retail. Software for mac though is a bit lacking, Presto pagemanager 4 is extremely dated and slow.In all, this printer won't disappoint for those of you that want a simple to use and setup printer, the installation wizard does everything for you. Ink cartridges are also decently priced and last around 3 months for our family (we print about 5 pages a day). I have been using 3rd party inks with this printer with no problems as well. Photo prints look decent as well, not the best, but passable for the casual printer.****One gigantic note though! When you're installing the drivers with windows based computer. DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE WHILE THE INSTALLER IS RUNNING!!!! For some strange reason, brother designed the installer to automatically click through those "windows has auto-detected a device" window and fill in the correct values for them. If you run the installer and are doing something else like browsing the internet like I did, the installer will not click on those buttons and the process will just freeze, forcing you to start from square one.

There may be faster machines that may have more features but I'd be hard pressed to find one in this price range! It's been great! I purchased it for a home network along with a wireless router because our kids received their own laptops for Christmas with wireless networking and I already had 2 computers, a PC and a Mac that existed on the network and this was a fairly straight foward process when following the easy to read instructions.We love it here. It prints fast (compared to others we've owned in the past) it faxes and scans quickly and is a snap to do a quick print from the camera memory card!Get one, you're gonna love it!

First of all, the black isn't black, even in the best mode. It's dark gray at best. With my old HP, black actually printed black. And I thought I was upgrading! Since I print more documents than pictures, this is important to me. Printing is also very slow. But the real deal-breaker is that the scanner doesn't work on my new iMac with Leopard. I chose this printer partly because it was to be compatible with Mac.I think I will be returning it. Just wish I knew what to replace it with.

I got my a used one, but it was kinda frustated at first, but once i figure out everything it out to be great. My issue experience first was the weak Scan Feature, but can be easily solve download the latest software in the site, will greatly improve scan option.Pro: Slim Price feeder (not many offer that in this price) All in one Quiet !!! Ink last very long compare to mostCons: Some confuse bottom Look kinda ungly for recent printer Annoying light when turn on Paper tray kinda hard to reach.

The print quality of this product is pretty good. It did take some manual adjusting before it would print pictures without background lines. It's not as fast as I would like it to be without jeopardizing the print quality. Overall I am satisfied with the product but if given the opportunity to I would tweak a few things.

Don't buy this printer unless you want to keep replacing cartridges that are not empty when the printer says they are! I have had to buy and replace cartridges when there is considerable ink left in them, about 1/4 inch, hence, not empty! I made a report to the BBB, who contacted Brother and Brother contacted me by phone, twice. After lengthy dissertations and explanations, I think designed to tire me out, the second time they asked me what would make me happy and I told them to replace this machine or buy it back. It also was suggested by him that I might take it back to Staples where I bought it, now that's funny, since he read where I purchased it almost a year ago. The rep stated that it is necessary to keep "some" ink in the cartridges so the heads don't dry out. I also was told by the rep that this is how the inkjet machines function. When I asked why I can't even print in black when it is full, I was told that it has to do with "suction". The selling point on the box which I was attracted to was that you don't have to replace cartridges as often, as in the tricolor printers, saving me some money, I thought, and I told this to the Brother rep. Again, I'm no tech, but this printer was not sold at high end stores, it was sold at Staples, to the general public. He said it is in the owner's manual, hmmmm. I don't know anyone reading the owner's manual in the store before a purchase. I think we were duped and now we can buy Brother cartridges forever. But not me, I have drilled holes in those cartridges and bought generic ink and filled them up. I told the Brother rep, and he said maybe I could have a problem, and I said I already have one! I won't be buying any more Brother cartridges! I sold my HP printer when I bought the Brother, what a mistake! My complaint to the BBB stands, and I'll be looking for that new HP.

Great printer without all the bells and whistles that one doesn't often need. Does a good job with photos and documents, copies and scan to e-mail etc. A little slow, if that's an issue, receiving the info from the computer. The LCD screen is small and often hard to read unless you get close and would be better if it was lighted.All in all great printer for the price.

I highly recommend the MFC-8820DN instead of this model. It's about the same price and it includes automatic duplexing (that's the 'D' in the model #) and it includes a network interface (that's the 'N' in the model #). Definitely don't go for a 7xxx model. The 8xxx models use high capacity cartridges which means about seventy bucks for > 6000 pages instead of fifty bucks for about 2000 pages for the 7xxx models. Think about it. After just a couple toner cartridges you'll have paid for the better machine!I didn't buy mine on Amazon as they don't sell the MFC-8820DN. I don't know why - it's much better IMHO.

I imagine the people giving this product glowing reviews haven't run out of their first ink, or if they have, they had spare ink all good to go. Listen up: if this printer is out of ANY ink the unit won't print. Even if you're out of yellow and you want to print in MONO, and set it to the MONOCHROME setting, it won't print AT ALL. Now that's just plain rude! This is just so great if you get caught short at midnight with a report to print. Puh-lease. I've had it - this thing is only three months old but off to the auction site it goes.

Just as expected. Scans flawlessly. Phone and answering system works great. Printouts and copies seem just fine. Wireless hookup was simple. In this day and age, for so many functions to work so easily, so quickly, without fuss is rare. Too many manufactures come up with great ideas, which are fundamentally flawed once you try using them, but this unit meets all expectations. The small size is a plus as well. I usually find at least something to complain about with any product, but nothing stands out here. The icing on the cake? The price - under $200. Simply exceptional. Let's hope it stands the test of time.

W O W....I just set up my Brother MFC-465CN All-In-One printer and it was a snap. The Quick Setup Guide must have been written by someone that has gone through the nightmare of setting up computers, TV's, stereo components, answering machines and all other electrical gadgets that come with truly non user friendly manuals. If you can read you can set this machine up without pulling out a single hair. For the price the quality is Ok though I was disappointed that it comes without a USB cable.

I bought this 6 months ago for home use which includes some work and also printing out craft projects for the kids at home. Setup was fantastic on my Mac WiFi network... plugged right into the router and everything just works.When I loaded it with cheap thin paper, it would jam, but as long as I use regular ink jet paper it works like a charm. I haven't replaced an ink cartridge yet, and this has never happened to me before.I'd buy brother again.

Its hard to know where to start. The unit only prints when it feels like it. The display is almost impossible to read, paper jams most of the time.I have still not been able to figure out how to turn it off, you press off and absolutely nothing happens. I would spend a little more money next time and get something better. In fact, I really need to buy a new unit now, this one is totally unacceptable.

The scanner used to work for me. After upgrading to Leopard (which is supposed to have updated drivers bundled), it would still print, but scanning always returns an error on the Mac. So I then found an updated driver separately released and I installed that, rebooting as instructed. Still no luck. Whether I ask the printer to initiate the scanner or Presto Page Manager 7 (came bundled with the printer), scanning is broken for Brother printers on Mac OS X Leopard.Totally frustrating experience.

The MFC 440CN is promoted as as working w/ VISTA. This is not true. The OCR software is not included and Brother Support says the following:Brother Customer:Thank you for taking the time to write to us.At this time, the OCR function will not work because the PaperPort SEprogram required for OCR functionality is not compatible with WindowsVista. I reviewed a number of All in One's and chose this one based on it's features, cost and previous reveiws. It is not used for business, just for personal use. I have faxed,copied to file,scanned and printed and have used the phone.I have not tried the photo copier yet. I tried to copy a form that needed blanks filled in but when it shows up on the computer there is only continious text and no blanks. The text can be edited though. The unit is just a bit noisy but I think it's a great machine for the money. I'm a happy camper.

I was looking for a printer that would stand alone without a computer hooked to it, so we could print from our laptops. Does absolutely everything we wanted and much more. Plus generic ink is dirt cheap, can find them for less than $1.50 a piece shipped (from a popular auction site :)Not much more to add that hasn't already been posted.

For the price, this unit does the job quite satisfactory. All functions work properly, and setting up the wireless interface was not difficult. The only down side is the color...it tends to look a bit "washed out" as opposed to brilliant, but this probably can be attributed to the less expensive ink jet technology.

Piece of junk. If it runs out of ink in any color, NOTHING WILL WORK. You cannot scan or fax. You cannot print in black if it is out of yellow. It also runs itself out of ink by constantly self-cleaning. The price seems good at first, but an inexpensive piece of junk is still a piece of junk.

I like this machine. It's easy to use, the quality and speed are good, and the additional USB connectivity is very useful. Since I refill all my printer cartridges rather than replace them, I found the cartridges on this machine easy to refill. I'd recommend this machine.

This product has everything you need, especially for an in-home business such as I have. I've used it extensively for three weeks and not a problem one. Copies are so realistic I can't tell the copy from the original, colors are perfect and the scanner and accompanying software are straightforward and user-friendly. I highly recommend the MFC-885CW.

This printer was very frustrating...until I figured out how to "beat the system". When I could not figure out why the color cartridges kept running out,(when we don't EVER print anything in color) I called Brother technical support to no avail. They pretty much told me that the color cartridges were (somehow) used in the spooling process, so they had to be full in order for any of the features to work properly. Then I had an idea. I didn't know if it would work, but I had nothing to loose. This is what I did: I took the cartridge that was supposedly "empty" out of the machine. I used a small flathead screwdriver and managed to get the black casing off. Then I filled up the bathroom sink with water. I filled the cartridge with water (I had to squeeze the cartridge and then put it under water a few times...until it was full)and put it back in the printer. To my surprise, it actually worked. I have done this 4 or 5 times total (over a year's time) and my printer is still working fine. I hope this info might help some of you that already have this printer. Good luck!

I've had my printer for about 2 years now. It's a Multifunction printer. No need to buy a separate printer, fax, copier or scanner. This does it all!!!! My only complaints are that this printer is slow. This requires 4 catridges and if one ink cartridge is empty then it won't print unless it is replaced. I also notice printer will indicate that a catridge is empty even when the catridge still looks like it has some ink left. I Would recommend this to anyone who has a home office.

While this printer functions satisfactorily and the network printing feature is nice, it's ink use makes it an unacceptable long-term solution.As far as functionality goes, all of this machine's functionality is satisfactory and solid, though a bit slow. Getting it set up was straightforward and at first, I thought this printer was great. There were no stellar performances for any functionality and the build quality is not great, but for the price I was quite satisfied.The horrible part is the ink usage. Even while off and not in use, the printer seems to clean itself obsessively. This cleaning uses ink, so after a couple of months of no printing, you are out of ink! When any ink cartridge runs out you cannot do anything except receive faxes to memory. (There is a workaround to the no functionality problem involving placing black electrical tape over the ink reflection matrix on the ink cartridge, but this does not solve the ink-use problem.) The worst part is that even with the excessive self-cleaning, just 18 months after I purchased the printer I can no longer print black. It seems that the print head is clogged, as numerous cleanings do nothing. The troubleshooting guide says to call Brother, and I can only guess this means spending nearly what I paid for the machine in the first place to get it cleaned. Horrible design, Brother. I could stand for purchasing ink more often than I might like, but to have the thing clog despite the constant cleaning is not acceptable.In summary, the functionality is good for the price, but the unbelievably bad ink usage forces me to say do NOT buy this printer.

Please read the complete review -- Printers are sold at or near the cost of making them -- the profits are in the ink. This Brother will run on cheap ( $2 ) aftermarket ink cartridges. That is the true cost of a printer. The cartridges that it takes are just clear plastic containers with ink in them, no foam inside to dry out or logic chips to lock them up when you run out of ink and try to refill them. You can also reset the ink level in software. If you understand about technical end of things you will understand how nice this is. Before you complain about the price of gasoline think about how much you pay for the few teaspoons of ink in that 20 dollar black ink cartridge and even more for colorBeyond that, this unit is compact, works as intended, takes common memory cards,reads and writes to them and will also print out a nice proof sheet of your photos with out needing a computer attached. You can adjust brightness and contrast unlike mentioned in another review. Ink level problem has been address with a firmware update. New units should have it and an update is avaiable online. One review complained about it being flimsy. Not really- I think they made good use of plastics for all the charactics needed for each part. The top cover is somewhat flexable as it should be and the parts for the paper tray are slick as they should be.The control panel has a slight texture, the push buttons are soft, again a good use of plastics.Brother states also in the manual that the printer also runs an automatic clean cycle every 20 days or so. It may use ink but a clogged printhead is the kiss of death and I suspect most people would think that their printer was broken at this point. So I think Brother does address this potential problem well.Well OK -- put your money where your mouth is -- I did and bought 3 of them. And a bunch of $2 ink cartridges. I will not claim they are balls of fire but all things considered one hell of a good deal.

I have to admit, I didn't care for the Brother printer at first. But it has definitely grown on me. Glad I gave it chance! It does a very good job of printing, and I'm very pleased with the scan capability. So far it's been a very dependable printer. I had assumed it would come with "sample" print cartridges, but was pleasantly surprised to find they were "full-sized" cartridges.

I haven't had it very long. It took me a little while to install. The quality seems okay so far but it prints REALLY slow. I searched online a bit and it seems others are complaining as well. It does seem a little less complicated than other printer/scanners I have had though.

I bought this printer about a month ago. I've printed less than 6 8.5x11 color photos and the ink cartridge is already generating a warning that it is low on ink. My printer was purchased new at Best Buy.Just a warning: it seems a good printer, but the cartridges are going to be an issue for most owners.

Great Multifunction. Easy network setup. My two pet-peevs:1) Default setting is the fax. It really aught to be the copier. C'mon Brother.2) The paper tray. I've removed it twice. Once when I got it, the second time when I refilled it. That time it was very difficult. This time I broke the tray trying to remove it. I can't even get the whole tray out. Arrrgh!

I was able to get this 4-1 at the end of November for $49 as a Officemax doorbuster during the "Black Friday" sales. I have had a Compaq and HP printer before. Although I have had problems with printing up labels, the ink lasted several times longer than that of my Canon Ip1700. I have used this to print several copies of our brochures for work and it has been perfect--no paper jams and the ink has lasted forever up to this point. I have been pleased with the fax capabilities, and the copying is comparable to the quality of the copy place down the street, saving both time & money. I haven't used the scanner yet, but I was able to download the software with no problems. And I just ordered 10 ink cartridges from e-bay for $21.Another plus is that each color ink is sold separately, so for example, my red ink cartridge is running low, and I will only have to replace that one color, as opposed to my Canon, which only has one ink cartridge with multiple colors.Overall, I would highly recommend this product for an all-in-one home office. It is compact and has been dependable in the months that we have owned it. When you consider the fact on printers the big expense is often the ink, this one is well worth the cost (if you can get a great deal for it) in offering multiple functions.

I got this printer for my girlfriend who mainly uses it for her grad school assignments so nothing fancy. It's easy to use, and the quality is pretty good. One shortcoming would be the photo prints, we tried to print a photo with the photo paper which came with the printer but it kept getting jammed...does anyone have a hint to share?

I am writing this review after using MFC210c for 3yearsat my home and was broken after mishandled by me, after total 3 year. It stopped working in it's first year and BROTHER replaced it with refurbished one without asking any other question so provided good customer service. It's a very small size machine. It's not good for pictures and do not expect fast copies (definitely faster than my current EPSON cx4200 which was FAR for me) Ink is cheap and that's very important even if you don't use it too much. Overall very satisfied. IT will only use one ink not like epson which will eat all the ink even if you use only black all the times. I will go again with BROTHER giving cheap ink and good customer support.

My old one died (yes, error 41) and I needed a new one. Tired of Brother printers, I looked elsewhere only to find that they don't work well on a home network. So here I am, back again, buying a Brother, the notorious waster of ink. Yet, it is great. It worked IMMEDIATELY on my home network with every computer MAC or PC in the apartment. No problems. Printing is clear, nice. "Relatively" fast. I love the fact that you can scan wirelessly to any computer in the house or have your faxes forwarded to your computer when they come in. Many great functions. I recommend going to inksoutlet.com and getting the multipack replacement cartridges for less than 4 bucks each cartridge. You'll save a fortune as it is a Brother printer and they BLEEEEEED ink. But with a $30 multipack, you get 3 black and two of the others, so you'll be good to go for a long time. Otherwise, the printer is great.

Work well so far for a month already. It is pretty easy to set up by following the instruction. The built-in network support is great, though I agree with others that it is kinda odd that the network plug is inside the machine that you have to route your cable awkwardly.The print quality is good. It did come with 5 sample photo paper that I tried one to print a photo picture. I chose the highest quality settings when printing the photo and it did look good to me.The feature that I wish it had was a custom feeder. Right now if you want to print addresses on an envelop, you have to take out all paper from the paper tray, adjust the alignment markers for the envelop and put the envelop in the right direction. The way how an envelop is placed isn't mentioned in the manual. May be that is related to MS Word's setting so it cannot be described. In any case I wish there is a custom feeder that I can simply slide an envelop in instead of taking out all the paper from the tray. But for the relative low price, I am not complaining.
