This is the second 210C I have owned. This is the second 210C I have damaged beyond repair due to anger. These machines are very tempermental regarding the ink. The machine will state the ink is empty when there is ink in the cartridge. It also does not like off brank inks. I love the interface and functions of this machine and that is why I bought the 2nd one. There will not be a 3rd. Insult to injury - they denied my rebate submission. Go ahead and buy one of these and test your level of control.

I have 3 computers at home: Mac with OSX, Windows X64 and standard Windows XP.First off, the driver support is FANTASTIC! Even on the mac. I was shocked to see they nailed it. My wife doesn't need my help even yo fax from her Mac. Driver setup was painless. (Many vendors really lack on the mac side of things.I also have native 64-bit drivers on my XP-64bit machine and the drivers for the regular windows are solid.Plus you get network printing, faxing and scanning (for all my mac/windows computers all for around $100! (with rebate) You can't beat that price for feature ratio. I was a bit scared at first to see that many features in such a great price, but I'm definately sold on Brother products now.Yes, some of the mechanical designs of the paper tray and plastics aren't as robust as expensive HPs, but it still prints fast, smooth and cheap (ink cartridges are separate colors and cheaper than HP's) text quality is crisp. Haven't tried high-end photos on it yet though.

First 3 lost blue ink and could never get it to print blue again even though I replaced it with several new inks of there brand. This one screwed up after trying to print christmas pictures only new probelm now print quality is so poor it is like a hazy picture instead of the crisp ones at the begining. They informed me being as the problems always seem to be about the same they will refer me to the service center next. Sorry but I will never buy another Brother product again!

Basic Printing Needs - ExcellentIf you just need laser printing on the standard 8 1/2 by 11 (letter) or 8 1/2 by 14 (legal) sized papers, then this printer does that job fabulously. Easy set-up, fast printing, and clear, sharp images.Envelopes, Labels, Odd Sized Paper - Poor(1) This printer has one alternate media feeder which only handles one piece of paper or one envelope or one sheet of labels at a time. If you need more than one printed, you need to hand feed, and open the main media tray so that the printer doesn't grab a sheet from there.(2) This printer also crumbles envelopes, labels, or odd sized paper when fed through the alternate media site.(3) If the above wasn't evidence enough of poor quality, short sized papers (8 1/2 by 4) seem to jam the printer unless you switch the output to the back of the printer. This is not a problem if your printer is on a table all by itself, but if you're like most users who have other things near the printer, you need to move the printer away to let paper fall out the back.Overall - If you just print on standard size paper and need a fast 'n cheap laser, this is it. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

I have had no issues with the printer so far. The scan software works great and it does have a preview function and one can control the resolution. Perhaps some of the previous users had an older version of the software. I have version "D". One can download the latest versions from brother.comThe printer and copier work great too. I primarily do basic text with light graphic printing and for my applications, it seems to be good enough. If I want to do photography, it is cheaper to do it at a professional photography center. The build of the printer is pretty cheap and flimsy. I would be happy if it survives for more than two years. However its compact form factor is great. It does not have the bulky auto feeders, which is not a concern for a light home user such as me.The issues of heavy ink usage are a concern. I will cross that bridge when I come to it and give my revised ratings then.

If you enjoy spending countless hours on hold waiting for Brother Service Center technicians or you really dig driving to Kinkos in order to print out what your malfunctioning home/office printer is failing to produce, buy this printer. Otherwise, beware.I have owned the Brother 5140 for 7 weeks. It has worked for 2. The drum unit became damaged (according to the Service Rep I was actually able to make contact with one lucky day) after 2 weeks of limited use. When the drum unit is damaged, the 5140 prints out solid black, icky sticky sheets. You'll want to be wearing your oldest clothes when this happens.Brother sent me a new drum unit. That took a week. The new drum unit produced the same black results. Brother won't refund my money since I did not purchase the printer directly from them. But, they will send me a new printer as long as I supply them with a major credit card. Yahoo! This experience has been a nightmare. I work out of my home and need a very reliable laser printer. The Brother 5140 is everything but.

One feature I wish this product included is a separate envelope feeder slot or tray. As it is, one must remove the entire paper tray, remove all of the paper, position the envelope in the tray and re-insert it. Once the envelope prints, one then must remove the paper tray, re-load the paper and re-insert the paper tray. Had I realized it lacked this feature I would not have chosen this all-in-one.Otherwise, so far I am happy with this product.

I purchased the Brother MFC-3820CN (...), my first one after 6 months died, after getting an ERROR 41 on its screen, the second one, well works, but its a pain to find ink thats cheap and it won't work well with Compatibles, so don't buy them, second, when you print out a picture, the picture quality stinks, everytime I printed out a picture after the first time, the pictures always had horizontal lines through it, It just stinks, I can't believe I purchased it. DON"T BUY IT... By an EPSON OR OTHER KIND..be sure that you've tested the Picture Print quality so that you don't get Lines through your pictures like I do with this one. The only thing good about it is that, you can make copies...and thats about it.

(for your own good NEVER buy ANY lexmark printers, scanners, faxes, or especially all in ones) and I returned the piece of crap because they charge me another $130 to buy a lexmark printer server.. well I had already spent $80 on a print server about 6 months ago and I was NOT about to buy another one for $130.. so I take a trip to staples, and return the product, I started looking around the store for a BETTER all in one, and there it was.... the Brother Multi function, I spent $10 more on the Brother instead of the lexmark AND within minutes the Brother multi function was set up, printing, copying and faxing.. I can tell it what number to dial and fax something to somebody from downstairs on my laptop. This is simply the best buy in its catagory..ok, I am off to put my print server on[...]now.. have fun and I seriously hope you buy this product.

I always bought an H-P printer because they are so easy to set up. But the prices are a bit high. I decided to try the Brother because of the low price and many features. It was as easy to setup and as reliable as H-P. I am thrilled with that. Plus, it does not take up much space and it looks great. The only downside is that I spend as much in ink every 2 months as the unit costs to buy. But I guess it is hard to escape this unless you want the hassle of ink-refilling.

This isn't the worst printer I've ever owned, but it definitely makes the short list. The problem of the paper curling that other people have alluded to is a significant one for me. I'm an author, and when I print out a manuscript, 350 curly pages are unwieldy and look amateurish. And the fact that a page curls when it comes out of the printer means that the pages that follow it often get caught on the curled edges, pushing the page onto the floor. Ridiculous. I've had a couple of paper jams in the first two months of using it, and a problem where it wants to grab more than one piece of paper and feed them through the printer together, but staggered. On the plus side, this printer is extremely fast. Issue a Print command, and it starts up quickly and spits the page out without hesitationIf all you print are letters that you fold into an envelope, I don't think the curling pages are a serious issue, since the envelope will compress them. But if the pages are to remain unfolded, there are far more suitable printer choices out there.

For a machine at this price I was not expecting anything good, but I was wrong. All the features (Scan/Fax/Print/Copy/Photo reader) works better than I expected. The software for PC and Mac has very good quality too. I will buy Brother's all-in-one product again in the future. It is a good machine for light use. I use it at least three times a week for fax and for daily printing and photocopy.Just like what they said on the box, it is for home and home office use. It does not have auto paper feeder. It support overseas fax mode (which is good when fax via VoIP service such as AT&T Callvantage), but this cannot be as the default setting, so you need to set it up for every transmission. The image scaling function works fine just like regular commercial photocopy machine.*** The comments below is written after I use it for almost two years ***This machine lasts more than one year so it passes the warranty, and then the printer functionality died after 18 months. During the 18 months of use, I constantly buy ink catridge for it because:(1) The MFC-210C will purge the ink catridge almost every day to keep printer head flowing. You lose ink without printing anything.(2) Among all four ink catridges, as long as one of them is low, the whole printer refuse to print. I can't seem to find an option to print it in reduced quality, which is a good feature for all HP printers.Because of the two ink reasons above, plus the printer head machanical failure, I decided to go back and get an HP printer after my happy two years with MFC-210C printer. Again, I like this printer because I get it for all nice features for only $79. Even now the printer/fax output is gone, I can still use it as a scanner.

I picked one of these a month or so ago on sale for $149. Unfortunately a recent accident with a sheet of labels destroyed the drum. Replacement drums for this unit go for $150! This surely presses the limits of the "Gilette" model of selling printers (give 'em the razor, overcharge them for the blades). I recycled the printer and replaced it with an HP-1022 (same capabilities, but the drum/toner cart replacements are only $50!)

Even with a full black ink cartridge, if any of the other ink cartridges are empty (yellow, blue or red), you cannot copy, print or receive faxes in black and white. Also seems to use alot of the three colors even during a period of mostly black and white copying.

I have had this machine for other a month now & I really love it. It was easy to install over my LAN. It has so many features and for a terrific price (what it is priced now, is even less than what I paid).I did a lot of research before I bought this device. I have owned Brother devices before and many others. I love the low cost of printer cartidges for this device, especially since I print a lot of digital photos. The print quality is excellent! Having two paper trays is very nice, I enjoy keeping my photo paper in one and regular paper in the other. You can also check the print volumes on the MFC directly, which is very convenient.I also use the scanning feature a lot. There are many options to choose from when scanning. Having an ADF which can scan both letter and legal is very helpful. The PaperPort program that it comes with is great too for organizing and viewing your scanned documents.I have also found that you can scan thru the ADF and print at the same time. I found it really amazing how much having memory in the printer helps my pc performance. Even when I have it printing and scanning I can still run programs at the same time on my pc with little performance loss. When I used to print with my Epson, I couldn't do anything else until it had near completed the print job.I have yet to use the card reader, because I have another and I also haven't hooked up the fax yet. Those parts are nice to have in case I need them.

The ink consumption of this thing is a joke. It astonished me that although i was rarely using colour, it was still being consumed at an alarming rate. I thought that the ink level indicator may be time rather than use based, but the ink had actually dwindled! besides this, efficiency is generally appalling.all i can say is be prepared for the exorbitant cost of consumables because you will be going through them very quickly. if anybody could suggest a decent and efficient printer (mfc or standalone) i would greatly appreciate it, as i am sick of inefficient printers wasting my time and money - especially ones which stop you from printing in black when the colour has run out (which you weren't even using!)bottom line - unless somebody is giving it to you (and even then be sceptical), steer clear of this lemon!

The scanner doesn't work well at all (and I refuse to spend 4 hours setting it up like one of the other reviewers did) and is not user-friendly whatsoever. I printed ONE sheet of business cards and the ink is already going out. I can sum up this printer in one word: JUNK. The only reason I'm keeping it right now is because I can't afford a new one. The minute I get the money, I'm going back to my old, reliable HP all-in-one!I gave it one star because I do like the size of the printer. To any potential buyer: Stay Away. Don't waste your money!

I bought this to replace an HP OfficeJet G85 with DirectJet printserver, which never had good drivers for Mac OS X or Windows XP. The Brother 5840 is as slow as the reviews say and slower than I expected, but the print quality is roughly as good as the officejet's.The big advantage over the officejet, however, is that the Brother just works. The Windows XP drivers worked out of the box (for SP2). With the patches on the web, Mac OS Tiger works, while Mac OS Panther works out of the box. Network printing is easy, as is network scanning. The officejet could not properly scan a multipage document to Acrobat 6 (Windows or Mac), while the Brother handled it perfectly. The media reader is not useful to me, but kinda cool. The separate ink cartridges are a big step up from HP, though. Overall, a good network multifunction printer at a great price.

As a courtesy to all those who might be taking the time to read this reviwe before buying the pinter, I would like to warn you that the ink system design for this machine is very bad. It uses black and color ink very quickly, and does not let you do any printing at all while any of the 4 ink cartridges are empty. Thus, run out of one color cartridge and you can no longer print black and white text documents. Very annoying, very expensive. I will do all I can to avoid every buying another Brother printer. Brother shows little respect for its consumers when it forces us to buy more ink than we need by not allowing us to print with the ink we have.

I got this today and I'm returning it tomorrow. The printer part is fine, but I do a lot of scanning and I am dumbfounded by what I discovered with this aspect of the machine. First off, when scanning you don't get a preview, you have no option of controlling the size of the scan, or the HSL or any other color/brightness control, nor can you control the dpi. You push the scan button and it scans the whole bed. If your object is smaller than the bed size, too bad. If you want something at 72 dpi (which is all any monitor can "see" so all you use for the web), too bad. If the colors aren't good, too bad. If there's a glare off of something you're scanning, too bad. No options are available. The files end up being large as they're the size of the bed and at 300dpi (the default). When I first tried scanning and didn't get a preview window or any controls, I picked up the manual to figure out what was going wrong. Guess what? no mention of scanning in the 200 page book. When I looked "scanning" up in the index, it told me to look on the cd. When I looked on the cd, nothing. I went to Brother's site and downloaded a manual from there--only to read that you don't get any options on any part of scanning!

Anyway, this all in one works great!! It is simple to use and was a breeze to set up. Plus the ink is a lot cheaper than other brands. I have used the copied, scanner and the printer, but not the fax so I can't comment on that. The other features work great. The copier/scanner is very clear and doesn't leave 'lines' on the scanned/copied items, like some other printers do. This is a great product for a great price!!

For the money I could not find another MF device that even came close to this unit.Printing, Fax, Scanning, and copying are all as expected with output quality on par with other units in the $150-$400 range. However, it is its advanced functions that really make it shine.First, the MFC has a built in 10/100baseT server. Not just a print server but a server that will support both local network and internet based printing, faxing, and even FTP access to memory cards. Want to share your digital photos; just put your CF, SD, etc. card in the printer and have your friends FTP in and copy the files. Or, use a memory card to store other files that you want to make accessable via FTP.You can also do a lot of other interesting things like auto-forward faxes, store and forward on demand, broadcast, and so on. In all cases a Fax can be sent via normal phone line or via email depending on the 'address' you enter. One very cool feature if you have broadband is that by opening port 515 on your home router/firewall you can print to the Brother MFC from anyplace you have internet access. Print from a hotel, airport, friends house, work (as long as port 515 is not blocked), etc. Very cool. Also, the 20 sheet ADF is great for making copies or faxing larger documents while the flat bed scanner allows copy/fax of bound books, etc.One the down side:- The unit is not small; allow enough space for it- The paper tray only holds ~100 sheets; a common issue with consumer printers- Memory is limited at 16MB; don't expect to store tons of complex documents- Color faxing ONLY works if you print the Fax when it arrives; you can't store a color fax and print it later or forward it to another Fax- You have to install all 4 ink carts. for the printer to work and if one cart. is out of ink the printer stops printing; e.g. if your Yellow is out and you want to print a B&W fax you are out of luck- Unlike HP units, the Bother has fixed print heads so if you have a failure you can't just replace the cart.; your have to replace the printer- You can't change the IP Ports that the printer uses for its various network functions; e.g. FTP is fixed at 21, printing is fixed at 515. It would have been nice for security reasons to be able to change these to a user-defined value. All in all this is a great all-in-one unit that has some great features that no other unit it its class has. For the price you can't go wrong!

Don't buy the Brother HL-5050 if you need to print preprinted checks or other preprinted forms. The printer will pick up the ink from the checks or forms and transfer them back onto the form as it prints. Apparently some Brother laser printers get hotter than other brands and this heat causes the ink to transfer back onto the printed document. Some preprinted forms with a lot of text become nearly unreadable after passing through the HL-5050. The printer also curls paper more than my previous HP printers, also apparently due to this "excessive" heat. Sometimes after printing several pages, a slight burning smell comes from the printer (like your central heating system the first time you use it in the winter). I never had this problem with my old HP 4P or HP 6P.I called Brother tech support and they were of no help whatsoever. They said the ink transfer was not a warranty issue and would not offer an exchange or a refund. They said the printer was working as designed. The price was good, the features decent, and the speed adequate, but I would not recommend this or any other Brother printer because of this ink transfer/heat problem. We also have the network version of this same printer in another office and it has the same paper curling problem. We don't use that one for printing checks so I can't say for sure if it does the ink transfer, but my guess is that it does.I will never buy another Brother printer. I only wish HP still made a decent quality laser printer for a small office. The HP models I looked at before buying the Brother seemed very cheaply constructed compared to my old HP 6P.10/06/2004UPDATE-Found a Solution to the Ink Transfer ProblemIf "Media Type" is changed to "Transparencies", the ink transfer does not happen. The paper curling seems to be a little better too. Why didn't tech support tell me this? Hope this helps any of you with a similar problem.

I got old, first-generation flatbed and sheetfed scanners (6-8 years old) clogging up my desktop, so I started out looking for an inexpensive replacement. After extensive research, I came down on two AIO choices--Brother MFC-5440 and HP Officejet 5510. I like the Brother better because it's more solidly built. The HP should print better photos, but these days you can just buy a cheap high-quality photo printer. Since I already have a photo printer, so photo printing capability is not my priority. Don't take me wrong. The brother still prints fairly good photos. As I said, scanning is my priority. I was not disappointed. The Brother scans much faster than my old flatbed and the images are far better than my sheetfed. I like the 35 page ADF; the HP Officejet has only a 20 page ADF. What's more, the Brother comes with PaperPort, which I've been using for a long time. The HP Officejet 5510 doesn't come with it, and I'm not even sure whether PaperPort works with it at all. Lastly, at this price range, you can't get an AIO with network capability. In a word, I'm satisfied with the Brother MFC-5440CN. It's well-built and well-designed. This is my second Brother home office product I own. While they might not excel in photo printing, overall I think they make good solid office products.

I've used this machine for about 1 month, but I had problems to use it on the home network. I have shared my FAX/DCP or MFC machine from my Windows XP machine and when other Windows users trying to print can not. I asked the technical support 3 times for assistance in this issue, but instead of looking the problem in details, they started to teach me how to make my printer shared on the network, which I've done many times. I wonder if the knowledge of their tech support people is more than that of average computer user. My old inkjet printer worked very fine as a shared, although it had only a paralell port connection and the present Brother machine is worhtless if you can't use it as shared on home networking. The knowledge of support people makes me very unsatsified so probably I will restrain form buying another Brother products. In my opinion this product is not worth the $120 spent for it, and also as result of the fax connection, my telephone answering machine is not working properly.

Also, probably the most annoying thing is that the paper come the wrong-side up so that you need to resort your paper, which becomes especially annoying if you're printing more than a few pages. On the bright side the fax and copy is simple, but that's about it. I suggest you spend more money on a better model or try a brand like HP or Epson. Like one of the reviewers said before, you get what you pay for! You buy a cheap printer you pay it all back with replacing the ink and the endless frustration so you might as well get one that uses the ink or toner efficiently and is without worries.

The only complaint that I have on this model is that whether or not you use the color ink or not it empties fast and then the printer won't work until you replace one color that may be out. I only use black and white right now, I've used no color copies or faxes or scans at all. The color cartridges still emptied out fast and the printer stops printing. Advice is that you always have several cartridges on hand to replace or you may have printing just stop in the middle od something really important.

After purchasing this useless doorstop to use with my G3 imac w/ OSX 10.2.8, it took forever to figure out a work-around to get the printer installed when the setup instructions gave no guidance about Brother's 'Device Selector' program, which pops up every time you restart, asking for an ip address. Wasted over an hour on the phone with tech support, only to be told that d.s. was only a useless annoyance that served no purpose, but since the tech had no knowledge of how to determine the ip address of the 'printer', I would just have to live with the annoyance. Printed nice quality on plain paper, except that it printed everything IN MIRROR IMAGE. Driver update to correct that, once installed, rendered the printer invisible to the system. Tech couldn't figure that out either, then advised that he would have to have the mac 'expert' call me back. THE NEXT DAY. The best part was when the tech suggested I should just forego network printing, and just stick to USB if I wanted the printer to actually work. Promises, promises-was looking forward to using what appeared to be a full featured multi-function printer, ended up shipping it back. Don't waste your time with this clunker!

I was going to order this printer, and had gone through the checkout, and when I looked at the final screen, the shipping was approximately $60!!!! I bought a lesser Brother model for my parents last Christmas and they have had great results.Beware of the shipping!------Shortly after my review Amazon started carrying the printer again instead of through a third-party. The shipping cost problem has been fixed. I now own one of these and it has been decent for the price.

Win XP PS2 made our Compaq A3000 obsolete, so as a simple solution our family sought out a new AIO..We settled on the Brother MFC-5840, easily installed the drivers, software without TechnoGeeks help. Print Quality is as good as I have seen on more expensive printers, color photo printing is adequate for our use, the color mode is a bit slow, but 15 ppm is more than some printers we researched. The card reader is a plus, and the Fax easily installed. For our use, this AIO suits our needs to a T...Thank you Brother..

I read all the reviews, then decided I couldn't beat the price. After 4 hours installing it,(including 1 1/2 hours on hold/speaking with tech support) it finally became operational. My problem was I had an old paperport program from my previous Brother printer that needed uninstalling. Since then it has been surprisingly nice. It does everything I ask it to do. It is quiet, compact, and has great print. Tonight I printed a photo and it was great. A hint about faxing - use super fine. So far (1 week out)it has been wonderful.

My home office is a mixture of Mac, Windows, and wireless network environment. The installation went well on both the Mac (OS X 10.2) and one PC (XP SP1), and I have assigned a fixed IP address to it althoug dynamic IP address works well, too.Immediately ran into trouble of using its scanning function after I've installed the driver and MFC Pro Suite onto my 2nd PC (XP SP2). The solution center on the Brother website does not offer too much help, neither they have respond to my email. And seems like there is no certified drivers available for SP2 from Brother for the moment. So now the only way to work around it is to scan the document by using the 1st PC then transfer it to the second PC which I am using most of time.Besides this hassle, I think this machine is the best one in the market for its price and functionalities, and I will highly appreciate if someone here can share the solution of dealing the scanning trouble with XP SP2.

I bought the mfc3820cn because I wanted a multi-function to use on a network and this one has a network connection built in. It worked out of the box. Software install was painless and I was printing / scanning / faxing / copying in a few minutes over my network. There are 4 separate ink cartridges which seem relatively cheap..... another factor which influenced my purchase. The ink cartridges have no print heads. The heads are part of the machine. So the machine does periodic cleaning cycles. Thats OK, except that these cleaning cycles seem to start up at random, often in the middle of the night. It wakes the whole house up. Even turning the power button off, or disconnecting the network or USB cables doesn't stop them. Theres apparently no way to stop them. I don't know how, in designing a printer, that something like this could be missed. It doesn't help that its quite a noisy printer anyway, much noisier than several Hewlett Packard printers I've owned. The machine has a built in clock. A cleaning cycle could check the clock first and postpone the clean if its between certain hours. Brother tech support first suggested that I pull out the power plug at night. Not very practical for a fax machine. If you intend having this machine at a business, then its probably fine, but if you intend having it in your home, then be warned, it will wake you up at night.

For a Mac user, this is a fine mulit-function machine. The software drivers for the printer's less-used preferences are a little off, but the fax is fast, the scanner communicates with every application to which I've linked it, the printer is as good as any I've seen for the money (or more). My only complaint is the orientation of the paper delivery, and the fact that after a few copies or faxes start to pile up, the floor's where they finally rest. That part could use some help. It's too soon to tell whether it's an ink-hog, but I'm very happy with it.

I've had it for a few months and I think it works great. There is a software update that even lets you configute it to scan and email without a computer. Just enter the email address or select it from the speed dial list and it will attach the document as a PDF.

I didn't appreciate this printer nearly as much as I should before I tried an inexpensive inkjet printer as an alternative. Admittedly, the 5140 driver seems fragile, and that can be frustrating. But the clarity of the print, even in draft mode (which I use for many, many intermediate printouts) and the inherent lack of smearing that a laser printer provides, make it worth the small amount of trouble. If you have problems, try this: Remove the USB from your system, hook up another printer, install it, delete the Brother drivers. Then put the Brother back on your system. If you're running XP, the system will reinstall the driver.

I have owned this unit for almost 2 years and have yet to actually have the printer/scanner on my home network. According to the user's manual, Menu/Set 5 should give me LAN settings. All I get is a beeping noise. Machine powers up, states the LAN is active, but never appears on the network. I have contacted Brother several times regarding the issue and I still have no access to my printer/scanner on the computer. I now own one of the most expensive FAX/COPY machines available on the market today. I would not recommend this unit and I would not recommend Brother Multi-Function devices.

I bought one of these for our small office, because we didn't own a copy machine and I was tired of putting fax modems in everyone's computer. Amazon delivered it quickly, my 12-year-old son set it up--and it works! Printing is not very fast--you wouldn't want to copy a large presentation on it--but for the few copies we do each day it's fine. The document feeder and memory make sending large faxes easy. And the PC faxing alone--eliminating the need to add modems and analog phone lines--more than pays for this machine. I couldn't be happier!

I wanted to buy a All-in-One printer for my personal home use. I have done extensive reaserch for an All-in-One mono laser printers, in no time I realized that toner and drum prices are exorbitant and gave up that idea and started looking for All-in-One inkjet printer. I was very inclined to buy HP Photo Smart 2610 printer because of HP's reputation for quality. At BJ's, I compared the size and price of MFC-210 and HP2610, what a difference.... HP2610 is double in size and triple in price. I went with MFC-210C and have been using print, copy, fax for last one week and so far no complaints.Pros:1. Ultra Compact2. Inexpensive (printer as well as ink catridges)3. Reasonably fast print, copy and scan (20 pages per minute)4. Dirvers for most of the windows O/S5. Easy set up6. Individual ink catridges(1 black and 3 color)7. Fax and Copy without a PC8. Directly reads digital memory cards for picture printingCons:1. No automatic feeder for FAX and speed is only 14.4 Kbps - if you don't do lot of faxing then speed should not matter.2. Print Quality is not as good as HP - for home use I can live with that quality.3. No USB cable - I had to buy 3 Pk USB cables for $7.95 at BJ's4. User manual talks (75%) on how to send and receive fax - I think Brother is still in FAX era.5. No networking - it is too much to ask from a $63.00 printer

Like others here, I bought the Brother MFC-5840CN because I have Macs and Windows PCs and a network for the whole bunch. I like that the printer installed fine for Mac OS 8.6, OS X 10.3, Windows 98SE, and Windows 2000. I plan to set the big tray as primary and the number one tray to "glossy" so I can have photo paper at the ready. Scanning to the PCs and Macs works great, too. I haven't messed with the fax yet.The multiple tray thing didn't work the way I expected. I set the big tray to "Plain", but setting the default paper to Plain still tries to print in the top tray. When the printer jams or runs out of paper, the error messages don't always tell you what's wrong, it just doesn't print. Or if the paper size isn't set just right; no print and no messages. It also doesn't consistently stay connected on the network. Now after a year and a half, I get "Failed to Init" and I can't do anything to fix it. Black and Yellow don't print well and cleaning doesn't help. I don't think it's worth getting it fixed since it's out of warranty.
